pla drabble featuring Rei not knowing how to get to know people in Hisui. But, someone's hands can say a lot about themselves, from what they look like to how they use them. Now Rei just has to figure out what his hands say about him.
Rei was naturally quite uncertain when it came to connecting with the people of Hisui. Their lack of trust in him aside, he had trouble even understanding them at times. They acted in traditional manners practically foreign to him, and their language was old and rich, but very different from what Rei was used to speaking. He’d gotten enough odd looks from carelessly using the everyday slang he was used to that he’d resigned to not speaking unless he was spoken to.
So, unsure how to properly connect with people, he figured out there was a lot you could learn about someone from their hands.
Professor Laventon, for example, had soft, warm hands that gave a compassionate squeeze when Rei shook them. They gestured dramatically when the professor was excited, and easily found Rei’s shoulders when he was nervous. The professor’s dominant left hand also bore a tiny little scar on the corner of its palm, which he dismissed as a result of childhood stupidity.
Akari’s hands, which Rei had seen when she taught him the art of crafting Pokeballs, were rough and calloused. She barely flinched on the odd occasion that she nicked herself with her knife, and her hands were very steady and precise. Her chipped and uneven nails were also highlighted by a dark layer of dirt beneath them, which contrasted her pale skin.
Rei had shaken hands with the leader of the Diamond Clan once, and only once. Adaman’s hands were firm, and he had a very tight grip. His hands were wrapped in bandages, concealing faded burns that peeked out from beneath. He made brief, stylish gestures, and if his arms were not crossed, his hands would be anxiously running through his hair.
The leader of the Pearl Clan also looked to have soft and relatively unused hands, but her fingertips were hardened from their constant work at playing the flute. Rei had watched Irida play once. Her fingers were swift as they danced between notes, easily letting her take solace in the music.
Rei had traded wares with a kind Ginkgo merchant named Volo on several occasions. The man also had many useful items for Rei to buy, so he was a pleasant face to see when Rei was out in the field. Volo’s hands, when Rei’s had brushed against them, felt soft, but were lightly corrugated with faint scars. His nails were chipped and just slightly too short, and his fingertips were faintly bruised. Volo used his hands a lot. He’d give Rei a light push from behind to startle him, or tap his chin in thought as he rambled about ancient legends, or take Rei by the shoulders and lead him somewhere, prattling on all the while. He seemed to always catch when Rei was looking, and would tuck his hands away. Maybe he also knew you could read a lot about a person from their hands. Maybe he had something to hide.
Rei wasn’t sure about his own hands. He looked down at them quite often, hoping to find something about himself. His hands had been soft and clumsy when he first arrived in Hisui, but over time they became almost as rough and careful as Akari’s, and as purposeful as Adaman’s, and as quick as Irida’s. He’d also gained quite the collection of scars, perhaps even more impressive than Volo’s. There were so many nicks and splinters from his attempts at crafting Pokeballs, burns and bruises and impressive bite marks from wild Pokemon, and even a couple fresh scratches from his own carelessness. His hands were weary and dirty, and still a bit uncertain, but he could use them. He wondered what sorts of things people would think about him when they saw his hands. He hoped “hardworking,” “tough,” and, “just a bit careless” came to mind, but he had a feeling it would take a lot more than a pair of hands to earn the trust of everyone.
Those hands would have to work, and help, and beg. They’d have to hold tightly to any connections Rei could make, and they’d have to prove they could be useful.
But Rei couldn’t help but notice, as he waved to Akari every morning, that people would look at his hands, and they would give a small, warm, almost pitiful smile.
Maybe his hands said more than he thought they did.

"Don't chase the rabbit"
“Ah, there you are, professor. Have a seat!”
Ein paused at the doorway, the sound of running water and the fresh air of Phenac City was almost foreign to him. But that did not matter. He was more perplexed as to why Evice was so urgent to drag him across Orre for a simple meeting-- a risky move in itself should the wrong people be looking for them. Ein finally complied when the older man firmly pointed to the leather seat before his desk.
Nascour stood almost proudly next to Evice, lifting a glass of Zinfandel in his hand, “May I offer you something to drink?” “I’ll pass, thank you.” Ein put his palm up in refusal, finally seating himself. He glanced at one of the windows before turning back to his superiors. “A bit bold of you to have these meetings out in the open like this, Evice.” he stated calmly.
“Bold of you to call me Evice in these parts, Professor Stein.” Evice retorted sharply, “It’s Es Cade-- Do not make me remind you again.”
“Mm.”
The one thing that seemed out of place for the well kept desk were the two pokeballs placed side to side. Eins eyes were glued to them once he caught sight of them. Neither Evice or Nascour made a habit of keeping their Pokeballs off their belts.
“There’s a reason you called me from the lab.” The head scientist spoke curtly, “What is it?”
“Ah, always to the point with you...” The rotund man pulled a cigar from his waistcoat, lighting it. “Just like Old Frankenstein.”
Eins teeth tightened around his upper lip at the comment, brows furrowed. Always made it a goddamn point to bring up the bastard in any conversation, any way how.
Two pudgy fingers tapped on the mahogany veneer desk, “You’ve been eyeballing them the entire time, boy.”
“Just the two?” Ein was puzzled, “A bit of a low stock to pull me out here when I already have a backlog of--” “Oh, it’s not quite that simple, professor.” Nascour grinned devilishly, “This here is a special order.” Eins brows turned in his curiosity, “Special, you say?”
“That’s right, my boy.” Es Cade took a drag from his cigar, Eins face scrunched a bit when the odor of harsh tobacco hit his nose. Es Cade pushed the two pokeballs towards the Cipher Admin. “If you’ll just take a look at the I.Ds on those pokeballs, please.”
Ein turned the pokeballs, one by one, in his fingertips. He squinted, adjusting his shades- did he read that number correctly?
“Tyranitar and Metagross.” His voice lifted slightly from his usual flat tone. “Color me impressed.” He crooked his brow, “Shouldn’t take any longer than the rest of the Pokemon-- maybe an extra day at worst--”
“Well, that’s the thing.” Es Cade cut Ein off. “These aren’t going to be like the rest of the Shadow Pokemon.” Ein paused. “... What do you mean?”
“You see Ein,” Es Cade took a sip of red wine, “You produce excellent Shadow Pokemon- I cannot deny you that.” He flicked the ashes into his ashtray. “However- There was an art to your grandfather's work that simply cannot be met with your means.”
Ein frowned. “Professor Francis Stein has been dead for the past seven years, Evi--.” “Ein!” Nascour objected. “Es Cade, excuse me” Ein sighed, shaking his head. “My point is- Francis is dead, yes.” Es Cade closed in on Ein over the desk, “You, however, are his grandson.”
Ein went silent, the pokeball he spun at his fingertips came to an abrupt stop.
“You want me to emulate his shadow pokemon.”
“I do.”
The room went silent, tension began to build as the silence grew uncomfortably long.
“Do you understand what you are asking of me, Es Cade?” The tone of Eins voice lowered. There was a stern, serious look in the lab chief's eyes.
“I do.” Es Cade responded curtly.
“And I am safe to assume you realize the number of casualties Francis’ Shadow Pokemon brought in, yes?”
“I’ve been working with Francis since you could barely walk. Those were my men, boy-- obviously I know about the casualties.”
“... And if I’m not particularly interested in getting mangled in my own lab?”
… Eyes cracking open, Evice went silent for a moment, taking a long drag on his cigar before finally putting it out. A crooked grin curled on the Cipher heads lips as smoke billowed between his teeth. “Suddenly getting cold feet about outshining old Frankenstein, are we, Ein?”
Back to silence.
Ein’s nails dug into the leather seats. His lower jaw twitched as his teeth gnashed behind a closed mouth. Brows furrowed, blue eyes seared into the hellish black and red eyes of his superior.
That bastard.
That ignorant, pudgy bastard.
Even Nascour shuddered as he could feel the tension in the room thicken.
“Well Ein?” Evice taunted, “Are you the scientist you claim to be? Or have you gone soft on us?”
The scientist closed his eyes, fingers clutching the bridge of his nose. He inhaled sharply before letting loose a loud, long exhale.
Fine.
If those two were so persistent in having a personal deathwish, so be it.
“... 900,000 pokedollars. Up front and afterwards.” Ein shot a glare at both his superiors, both baffled at his demands.
“1,800,000 pokedo--” Nascour shook his head in disbelief, “Are you out of your mind, Ein?”
Ein stood up, rolling up both his sleeves. Ciphers Chief Admin cringed when he saw the mangled state of Eins forearms- poorly kept bite scars and claw marks covering and nearly disfiguring his arms.
Evice said nothing, completely unphased by what he saw.
“You do not understand what you’re dealing with.” Ein responded coldly. “... I do. 900,000 pokedollars. Up front and afterwards. Take it or leave it.”
Nascour faintly touched the Cipher Heads shoulder, “Uncle, we don’t need to take that kind of-”
“Silence, Nascour.” Es Cade closed his eyes, letting out a long exasperated sigh. “Very well, Professor Stein. Consider it done. I’ll have Nascour at the lab with the cash and the Pokemon as soon as we get things settled.” Es Cade offered his hand. Ein backed up abruptly.
The elder man shook his head, “Arceus, boy, you’re going to have to make physical contact with another human being one of these days.” Es Cade made a shooing motion towards the door. “Get moving- last I heard, you were bitching about having a backlog of shadow pokemon.”
Ein said nothing, only briskly moving out the door.
“Do not disappoint me, boy.”
