My copy of The Mysterious Affair at Styles is a used one. I don't remember buying it but as I opened it, I saw that someone had bought it on 2nd January, 1984! And here I am, reading it on 5th January, 2024. 40 years later!

And who knows how many hands, minds and hearts has this copy been through, but I am happy to be a part of that little bookclub.

■ Selain daripada karya-karya Buya HAMKA, saya suka buku-buku karya Pak Latip. Buku pertama beliau yang saya baca ialah “Perjanjian Hudaibiyah”. Bahasanya mudah, penceritaannya ringkas, tapi tetap merangkumi semua yang penting dan menyentuh jiwa. Jaranglah membosankan. Cuma, kadang-kadang tu, terlalu padat.

Contoh, dalam buku ini, banyak sangat nama-nama penting yang diselitkan tapi kehadiran nama itu cuma sebentar. Bahkan banyak yang muncul hanya dalam sepotong ayat sahaja. Yang membuatkan saya fikir, perlukah dimasukkan? Tapi, saya faham, nama-nama itu penting untuk menyampaikan bahawa, takdir pertemuan dengan individu-individu tersebutlah, walaupun seketika, yang telah mencorak pemikiran dan peribadi Tuan Hasan al-Banna sejak kecil hingga dewasa.

■ Buku ini tidak terlalu berat dan berselirat. Maka, amat sesuai bagi memperkenalkan pembaca dengan kewibawaan dan perjuangan tokoh Islam penting pada zaman moden kita ini. Ketajaman minda beliau, ketegasan pendirian beliau, cara diplomasi beliau dan wawasan beliau dalam mahu mengembalikan sinar Islam yang sebenar, jelas terselah walaupun ringkas, memberi inspirasi besar untuk kita.

Betapa cintanya harus kita kepada Allah swt dan Islam. Betapanya, perlunya kita menanam keikhlasan dalam pekerjaan. Semoga kita dapat bersabar menghadapi ujian dan tentangan dari pelbagai arah.

■ Ada beberapa bab dalam buku ini, saya fikir mungkin perjuangan Kaum Muda di Indonesia yang saya kenali melalui karya HAMKA, mereka terinspirasi oleh Ikhwan Muslimin, yakni, Muslim Brotherhood. Bila baca bagaimana tertubuhnya Ikhwanul Muslimin dan perihal ahli-ahlinya, memang tidak mudah. Memang bergetar dada. . ■ Ketika saya sampai ke bab yang menceritakan bagaimana beliau ditamatkan riwayat, pipi saya dibanjiri air mata. Sungguh marah, kecewa, dan sedih saya dengan pihak-pihak munafik. Hampir-hampir saja saya memaki mereka, tapi saya tahan lidah dan hati daripada berkata kesat. Sungguh ingin saya memeluk isteri Allahyarham Hasan al-Banna.

I think I love old books more. Because they hold that memory. That sometime ago, there was another reader, who read this book alone in their room, or perhaps whilst they’re journeying someplace else, who chuckled to themselves when the one of the characters did or said something funny. You both shared that with the person, and it’s something I find quite beautiful.

[Book Review] ✨THE WITCH OF PORTOBELLO✨

🧮 Score: 4.0/5.0 . “...In order for us to liberate the energy of our strength, our weakness must first have a chance to reveal itself.” -- page 284

This book is a captivating and thought-provoking exploration of spirituality, identity and the journey towards self-discovery. The author blended mysticism with philosophy through the interviews with various characters who knew the protagonist, Athena. Created a mosaic of viewpoints that gradually piece together the complex puzzle of her life.

Wow. Just, wow! Amazing actually. I mean, many other books/novels tell the plots from multiple perspectives, but certainly, unlike this book. Until the last few pages, I was still wondering: who’s the one conducting this research on The Witch of Portobello exactly? Was it Paulo Coelho, inserting himself as one of the characters? As much as I was wrapping the ideas around my head, by the end of the book, all questions were answered.

The themes of feminism, empowerment and breaking free from societal constraints are prominent throughout the story.

Midway through reading, I thought to myself: when her chaotic crazy life will settle down? What’s the purpose of this book? I was slightly jaded. However, at about the last 100 pages of the book, it's very crucial. I was stunned. All the plots building up to the last 100 pages were necessary for us to understand and empathise with the last 100 pages. The wait was worth it.

■ I saw a few people comment on Goodreads.com that this book is confusing, has a lot of back and forth, or it seems like a compilation, not a novel. It can be chaotic, I get that. I mean, that’s the beauty of this book! A rare form of storytelling! . ---- p/s: Although I do not condone and agree with many scenes and values featured in this novel, I must admit the content is complexly well-written and intriguing. I appreciate the author’s creativity. My favourite Paulo Coelho novel by far. If only the messages are not contradicting what I believe in and the fact that I feel sorry that the characters are still lost in life, I probably would give a higher rating. It is sad seeing Athena is already on the path, seeking to fill in the void she felt, yet she followed the lead of the disbelievers. Indeed, Hidayah milik Allah swt.

I am pretty sure, as much as this is a work of fiction, there are people on journeys like hers in real life. . ---- ● Buy a preloved copy here:

Book Purchase.

So I finally put in the order for David Levithan's Every day. Cause I finally run out of patience waiting for the seller to send a pic.

Well I wanted a picture because, those provided in the online shop ate not enough to tell if there are issues with the spine of the book. It's my pet peeve so, yeah.

I impulse bought it. And I found out there is like admin fee now, if you pay using gcash. Like what a waste of three pesos lol. My cheapskate ass could never.

I am also wanting this hardbound Neil Gaiman's Coraline. It's so cheap and boy, it's a first edition. So maybe soon. If ever itsy still available.

But yeah, purchased a book—again.
