some observations about the changes in Percy's personality in the chalice of the gods because im a fucking dumb fuck

if you've read chalice of the gods, (and if you haven't then just go and read it PLZ), it's pretty obvious that Percy's personality has become more "bby girl" sassy than his original "angsty skater boi" sassy. now i know I'm probably making excuses for rick's writing still, which changed considerably after writing 5 whole books from apollo's perspective, who is the canon bby girl btw, but some of his sass has transferred into Percy's personality. this could also be because of the natural change in Percy tho. for starters, he's growing up now. leaving the angsty angry teen years behind. obviously, his emotions are more in control. in chalice of the gods, it is indirectly stated he keeps his cool more than he did before. in the tower of Nero, he seems more amiable than he ever was, which just proves my boi has become a well rounded individual on the way to adulthood who has learnt to not be angry and childish. good for him.

another reason he's a lot happier than before, and i could be wrong, but i most definitely am not, is that Percy was pretty angry and snarky before he went into Tartarus, right up till MoA. and boom, in house of hades, he falls into Tartarus, gets hella traumatized, broken af and just fucking destroyed, and then he enters the mortal world again, all sappy and shit. most people think that he's all happy and so he's dumbed down in the blood of olympus in order to raise all the others to the pedestal, but isn't that how anyone will react after going to hell and back??? sure he was dark and all scary at first, but when that boy healed (almost completely, after all PTSD never really leaves you ) he was just so full of joy. because that's the rational way to go about it. compared to all the shit in Tartarus, any problem in the world was next to fucking NOTHING. no problem was too big because he has been to literal hell, and hence all his anger has died down and is just a little spark now, and so just pointing it out old Percy= snark/ impertinence (close enough eh) Percy in Tartarus= fucking broken lmao new Percy= lost most of his anger, a lot happier, nothing else. and hence a new equation is formed snark-anger=sass so now all that's left is sass it's also given in the dictionary that while sass is just playfully feisty, snark is supposed to rude. that's all. Percy hasn't been dumbed down. he's just happier and more carefree (again pointing out, not the same as careless, which Percy was before) wait wait wait yes

old Percy= careless new Percy=carefree careless + more responsible + more considerate - anxious =carefree

I find it interesting that Leo tells Raph that Raph was Mikey’s age when he first went out alone because it’s fun to draw the conclusion that Donnie and Leo were not that age when they themselves first went outside.

Sure, they likely could have just ventured out at the same time as their brothers and Leo just chose to focus on Raph to make his point, but given Donnie and Leo’s respective personalities I can absolutely see them just leaving anyway at a much younger age.

oh, the tension between me and the poor urgent care staff member that’s been assigned the arduous task of trying to find one of my tiny escape artist veins so they can draw my blood whilst doing their absolute best to be polite and not say anything about the fucked up and concerning amount of scars on my arms, wrists, and hands

#bellum x linebeck tag ramblings im not making this an actual post i just wanna throw some ideas around bc its still abstract n all that #cuz its not like. just romantic? like im not gonna sit down and treat it like some conventional relationship tho sometimes it is #like i sit down and not a single au/bit of post ph are they actually just. dating. they generally just have Something going on #like in ph. off the bat. i think when linebeck learns about bellum he starts to research him- checks libraries and personal collections #and hounding oshus and the spirits and trying to scrape together every little bit lf information he can find #at first its to quell his fear and maybe find tips he can pass on to link but once he digs deeper he just starts doing it out of curiosity #so theres just a mutual. they really want to know more about each other- linebeck doesnt just stop at researching bellum as an enemy #and bellum doesnt just stop at ‘researching’ linebeck as an enemy and someone to take advantage of #before they meet they have already gone a little farther than necessary into finding info on each other so they. have that mutual interest #and neither of them are too familiar with that i mean linebeck gets link but hes just used to limiting what people know about him #and bellum is used to just being a demonic enemy in need of eradicating (justified tho) whose other traits have been lost to time #like i imagine that long long ago bellum was worshipped as a like. god of war deity of survival against the odds that sort of thing #but the more positive aspects were left to languish when he decided to take the easy and simple way out and towards power and survival #but thats Bellum Lore that i need to add to That Post bc i don think its on there lmao #ok but. specifically in the crimson king au. theres this whole thing bellum eats people he has linebeck bring back limbs and stuff for him #but like some nights they make dinner i (linebeck is. not going to eat human meat. probably)#and while bellum prepares whatever dead guy linebeck brings him linebeck usually brings over a fresh squid #i feel like there’s something there. in other aus bellum ends up being intensely protective of linebeck due to them being reliant on each #other and bellum has known linebeck for a while. in some hes just like. his boss? the space au one is fun thats a fun dynamic #space au is probably the current au where theres the least romantic w/e between them but its still weird #anyways. but like in post ph its that sort of curiosity about each other that drives them to be kind to each other and. civil #theres some recognition they kind of see themselves in each other they understand how they think to a certain degree #bellum is possessive (heh. heheh) of linebeck very quickly partially to be able to keep. well. studying him and eventually bc of liking him #like on a level bellum is kind of just this violent animal that linebeck studies and finds ways to sustain and take care of but bellum #also knows linebeck incredibly intimately so while empathy is generally not there he can talk about very personal stuff to bellum and.#and vice versa a bit! its weird. like bellum has done heinous shit but linebeck kinda just. cares about the present and the future #it kinda ties into my idea that linebeck would rather not touch the past much like he keeps it in mind but moves forward no matter what #so he keeps his eyes forward with bellum and while initially distrustful and keeping him on a short leash just like. gives him some grace #this might be tag limit but like. yknow? im getting there but i might stick to just being loose with it bc it works #salty talks

#doing some dai file stuff #this doc is 10 pages long and this is the FIRST thing that's even been underlined lmao????#personal #da #dai #so anyway im not planning my nightmare difficulty run by looking at strategy guides. im planning by looking at the game files #gonna actually make a bunch of armor and weapon sets for different areas which is something i NEVER do #i rarely change armor sets and only in the most recent run did i carry a staff for each element (because promoted enemies could get rough)#but iirc on nightmare difficulty enemies can have elemental immunities rather than just high resistances #so im just going through every immunity/resistance/vulnerability status effect in the game and seeing which creatures have it #then i can plan per faction and more broadly per area #it sucks that you cant change equipment during combat in dai. i didnt even know that until my last run because ive never had to #and to refer back to a post i made a few days/weeks/idk ago.....yes i AM planning to at least start the nightmare run solo #obv with the aim to do the whole thing solo but i wont be upset if i cant. gonna try tho #that's why im planning armor and weapons so much now. gonna plan what masterworks to use too #walking fortress and guard-on-hit/unbowed are gonna be the most useful imo #for playing as a mage that is. i do genuinely think mage is the best for dai solo because you get the most coverage #for like. elemental damage and applying quite a few effects and being able to spec offensive or defensive #oh and i'll probably carry round a bunch of respec amulets. i usually just play spirit/lightning but fire and ice will have their uses #knight-enchanter obviously. not even for the heal (although that's useful) but it's OBVIOUSLY the best for melee #idk. i feel like this last run gave me a lot more to think about in terms of strategy than ive ever had because of all the trials #so im a bit more confidant in actually planning for tough fights. still might just get instantly overwhelmed by damage and give up lmao

I think that gets to the heart of what I've been thinking about, that bittersweetness, because despite his best efforts... of course he could never end up anything like Yoko, but he still ended up with an abusive "household." Because in addition to Masato ending up how he did, he has to see those same situations play out, feel that same tension in the air between Jo and Ichi, over and over for almost a decade straight.

Like, in a way, he's forced to put himself in Toshio's shoes when that happens. He can't really get through to Jo, in the same way Toshio can't get through to Yoko, but he can try to step in before lasting damage is done, and he can try to make it bearable for his son. You know. Have a nice talk. Treat him to Peking duck. I'm SO normal about the (drawn-out) parallels of those scenes

So then with Jo... he kind of does become his father, even if he never wanted to (no one wants to), both through his ruinous neglect of Masato at birth and through how he comes to look at discipline and corporal punishment. I'm sure it's not lost on him in Masato's case (owww), but with Ichi, it's not like he has any reason to see him as his son... But How Far Can That Take You.

Because it's like, at the start, he was openly beating Ichi in front of Arakawa and not letting up much when Arakawa intervened. But then you have The Yubitsume Scene and Arakawa walking in on All That and... he looks sorry. Sorry for being caught, probably, but sorry nonetheless. Like... what changed between then and now... have you two had a Heartfelt Conversation... do you know where Arakawa got that scar... are you unable to change your "nature" even then...

BUT ALL THAT ASIDE thank you so much for delving into the symbolism! Wonderful read. I don't really have an eye for symbolism, so that makes it all the more enjoyable to revisit the comic and everything with what you've gone into. I think a lot of your experiences resonate with mine, so conversely I'm not sure what others would take away from it, BUT I think there's enough there that's so insightful and evocative that it's effective without personal experience.
