Aequitas. There was a time when it was a household name (...or there was six years ago). There was no way the team could have avoided attracting attention. A group of heroes, let alone a group of teenage heroes, was always going to attract the world's attention.

Whether it was stopping crimes, combating villains, or protecting civilians, heroics added a sense of completion that other things could not.

It is inevitable that all good things in life come to an end, including the group that once protected Metanoia.

Although the name has lost its renown, a part of you still feels a slight sense of pride whenever the name of the ragtag group of young heroes is uttered. On some level, you assume that's to be expected.

After all, you used to lead it.

• Play as a former(?) vigilante that is suddenly thrown back into the world of heroics. Once the (superpowerless) leader of an unstoppable group of heroes, you are now job-hopping in order to stay afloat.

• Train a new group of (unskilled) new young (far too young) heroes (not at all against your will)!

• Customize your MC’s current personality (their past personality is a different story…) and appearance!

• Reunite with your former teammates and look back on what exactly led to your team disbanding (and try not to repeat your past mistakes).

• Form bonds with new friends and rebuild bonds with old ones.

• Reminiscence on your past and remind yourself what led you down the path of heroics in the first place.

• Romance your former (friends) teammates

• Defeat the villains and save the world (again). Obviously.

The (Original) Team [ROs]

Alexandria “Alex” Andeno [She/Her]

Alias: Elysian

The former co-leader of Aequitas, Alexandria Andeno is a force to be reckoned with. With her tactical mind as well as her unbeatable strength and stamina, Alex acts as the perfect warrior as well as the perfect protector to both civilians and her fellow heroes.

With her diplomatic and compassionate disposition she easily fell into the role of the team “big sister” and it was a title she wore with pride. She is someone that had always given great advice so it is unsurprising that she went on to become a therapist. However, there seems to be shadows of discontentedness hiding in different aspects of both her personal life and career.

Napoleon Jasper “Jasp” Walker [He/Him]

Alias: Momentum

Your (former?) best friend. Loudmouthed and snarky, Jasper’s mouth runs almost as fast as him (a remarkable feat truly). Due to his (self-given) role as the goofball (moron) and prankster of the team, Jasper was not only a thorn in your side but also everybody elses.

Despite his rashness, Jasper is incredibly skilled and intelligent- a fact that is made abundantly clear from the awards hanging on his childhood bedroom wall as well as his job as a scientist at one of the most technologically advanced labs in the world. However despite his flaws you can always count on him to have your back (or that’s how it used to be).

Zhiuxzoe “Zoe” Smith [She/Her]

Alias: Onism

An alien from another planet, Zoe is truly an interesting being to be around. Despite her overly naive attitude, her bubbly and kind disposition make it truly difficult to be mad at her.

The most (openly) upset about the team disbanding, she is the only one who has went out of their way to keep in contact with all of the former members. Her overly inquistive and curious nature led her to journalism which she does exceptional job in despite it putting her in a position where her out of this world nature being revealed is at risk.

Rowan Parker [He/Him]

Alias: Kalon

Rowan Parker is the human embodiment of a forest fire- intense, pretty from a distance, and will 100% burn you if you get too close.

The former “bad boy” of Aequitas and currently a mechanic, his hot-headed demeanor is what led to him being the first to leave the team and was the main factor in his (initially one-sided) rivalry with you. Rowan is the only other (former) member of Aequitas that still fights crime, of course now and days he’s leaning more towards “anti-hero” then hero…

Vesper ??? [They/Them]

Alias: Lacuna

The kid that (forced) got you back in the game. An individual made up of all knowing smiles and snarky remarks, Vesper is an enigma that nobody can truly solve. They usually put up a hyperactive and occassionally “ditzy” attitude…although sometimes if you look close enough you can see something else lurking in the depths of their eyes.

Leonardo “Leon” Cabello [He/Him]

Alias: Curio

Compassionate yet uncertain, Leon is quite clearly the newest to the heroics business (of course that might be because of the ancient artifact forcing him into it…). With managing both schoolwork and heroics as well as being the only one on the team with any common sense, Leon has his work cut out for him.

Juniper “Juni” Kent [She/Her]

Alias: Apricity

Loud, hyperactive, and a bit obnoxious, Juniper Kent is about everything you would expect a teenage superhero to be. You’re more likely to find her playing on her phone then patrolling the city but behind her somewhat childish and excitable personality lies a truly kind and selfless indvidual that wants to help others.

Lenora “Nora” Croce [She/Her]

Alias: Moira

Painfully timid and incredibly kind, Nora is one of the most selfless people you will ever meet which is saying a lot considering she is in a group of other heroes. She would give you the clothes on her back and more if she needed to. Just make sure not to get on her bad side…

Sebastian Barrere [He/Him]

Alias: Calamity

The human version of the anti-christ, Sebastian Barrere is bratty, uptight, and just a little bit petty. Wanting nothing more than to prove himself both to the world and his mother, Sebastian focuses all his time on getting stronger. However there might be something kinder lurking beneath the surface of his prickly attitude.

OFF THE RECORD ; AHN YUJIN ONE-SHOT

you’ve been chatting with an online friend for about 2 years, you knew them as their alias ‘ahnz’, they never posted their face but you knew almost everything about them. but, did you really know what they were saying was true?

it’s been about two years since you turned to online friends instead of real life ones. the ones you made offline were just complete assholes. it was always when you needed your real life friends the most is when you realized how fake they were.

you’d call one of your friends, lim dahye, sobbing uncontrollably, begging for her to distract you from your parents fighting. yet, all you got on response from her, “sorry, who are you again?” while you heard giggles in the background. you had considered her a closest friend, but all you received was humiliation.

the closest friend you made throughout the two years online was ahnz. the only thing you knew about them was they were a year older than you and that they, or well she, was a girl.

you had given her a nickname “hannie” and you were happy to know that she thought the nickname was cute and that she liked it.

the more the two of you talked, the closer you two got. you felt like you could trust her, although, you hadn’t met her in person. she just seemed different, not like the other people you had trusted before.

there was one night that your parents started to fight when you received a text from ahnz, you had nicknamed her in your phone as ‘hannie’ since the app you used, let you.

she had sent you a link to a girl group performance, the thumbnail had a girl with short hair poking her cheek. “she’s so pretty, her makeup looks amazing...” you spoke in awe.

you stood up to grab your wired earbuds, since you couldn’t afford wireless ones, and watched the performance. it was a very useful distraction from the fighting going on.

hannie: y/n, check out this video :o [link]

y/n: omg, they’re amazing performers!!

y/n: wish i was that good lol

hannie: don’t say that! i’m sure you’re amazing at it :(

y/n: i see their group name is ive, how do you pronounce that? like i’ve?

hannie: i hear people pronouncing it ivy or i’ve, i guess it’s a matter of preference? idk though

hannie: which member caught your eye?

y/n: hmm, the one with the short hair with bangs. she had so much charisma and just looked fierce! she’s so pretty~

after you’d sent that message, you realized ahnz went quiet. so, while you waited for a response, you decided to watch some more videos of the group she had sent you.

the next day, during class, you received a call from hannie. your teacher, mrs. lee, gave a stern look towards you. “no phone calls during class, miss seo.”

you nodded before answering the call, “sorry, mrs. lee. it’s... an emergency.” your quick answer made her give you a nod, “go out in the hall then, y/n.”

“hannie, what’s going on?” your concerned tone rung in her ears, “y/n, are you able to... meet up...?” she asked, her voice quiet.

“what?”

“are you able to meet up with me?”

the question hung on a string. a string that was about to snap clean in half. you felt your heartbeat increase as you weren’t sure what to answer. sure, you’ve talked to her for two years, but you’ve only thought about meeting up once.

you weren’t sure if you were ready to meet her.

“y/n?” her voice entered your senses again, making you gasp softly.

“ah, sorry-” you barely let out a whisper as you apologize quietly. “y/n, if you’re able to meet up, please come to 4-5, samseong-ro 146-gil, gangnam-gu, seoul. it should be nearby you, yeah?” you hum giving her the confirmation she needed.

“see you then, hannie.”

you walked back into class and all eyes were on you, “so?” your teacher stares you down, waiting for some kind of response.

“what?”

your teacher huffs in annoyance, “what was so important?” your thoughts quickly scramble to make up an excuse, “ah- my grandmother passed away.” you give off a weak smile to keep your act straight as your teachers eyebrows narrow.

“i thought your grandmother passed last year?” it was true, but you had an excuse up your sleeve, “that was on my mother’s side, the recent one is on my father’s.”

mrs. lee quickly gave an apology, which you accepted. she didn’t know it was a lie after all.

after your classes came to an end, you found yourself in front of the building that hannie suggest you meet up in. but, it was starship entertainment? you weren’t sure why she’d ask to meet up here.

you shrugged before hitting an intercom, that looked very high-tec. you watched as it lit up and noticed a very small camera, recording your presence outside.

“come in,” a female voice is heard thru the intercom as the fancy doors opened to let you in.

“oh- t-thank you...?” you struggled to sound genuine as you were still, very confused. just why did hannie want to meet here?

you hesitantly entered the tall building and nervously looked around. you felt you stood out against the rest, but not in a good way.

you felt very underdressed, everyone else looked as if they were wearing designer clothes (they probably were), you didn’t feel like you fit in.

a taller figure was approaching you with a smile and it felt like time slowed down as you took in their physique. she was nearly 6-feet tall, her smile was very charming, alluring. her hair was on the shorter side, seemed to be a wolfcut. she has a leather jacket on, seemed to be in the middle of recording something, but you weren’t totally sure.

she looked exactly like the female from the fancan video hannie had sent you. just what was hannie playing at?

“hello, are you y/n?” the tall female looked at you with the same charming smile she approached with. with a slow nod, you gave her the confirmation she needed.

“i can’t believe we’re finally meeting each other! my name is ahn yujin,” she leaned in to whisper in your ear, “you know me as hannie~” the teasing tone of her voice made you jolt back, surprised that the female was actually hannie.

“h-hannie?” your voice was failing you. the sudden surprise of learning she’s your closest online friend was big, you could barely let out your voice.

she gave a simple nod before saying, “you can call me yujin now!”. she reached for your wrist, making your pull it back without thinking.

her eyebrows furrowed and yujin looked down at the ground, “ah, i’m sorry. this must be a shock..”

you nodded, “very shocking, i mean i was just watching a fancam of you a few days ago.”

yujin let out a giggle, “i wanted to know your thoughts~” she lightly punched your arm with that same smile.

faking hurt, you grabbed your arm and yelped in pain, “you pain me, yujin!” you laughed, before noticing yujin was looking at you with wide-eyes.

“what?”

“you called me yujin this time,” her voice seemed filled with emotion. what emotion? you couldn’t read it.

you shrugged “you told me i could.”

yujin pulled you in for a tight bear hug, “this makes me so happy! i can’t wait to introduce you to the others~”

you smiled as you gave the same amount of strength into the hug, “already? we just met~” you teased as you received a pinch in response.

Viktor: Mostly rehoots pottery stuff, sometimes makes sarcastic remarks to Theo’s dumb hoots.

Theo: Loves posting shade at certain people and dumb stories that don’t sound believable but are 100% true.

Charlie: Rehoots Theo’s shade posts just to stir the pot. Also posts about what they’re currently reading and what’s on their TBR.

Amri: Rehoots news to do with corruption in general. Drags their family on the regular, especially their dad. Also rehoots any and every tweet that calls MC hot once you meet.

Cameron: Usually just rehoots obscure sorcery documents and pictures of cute animals. Will occasionally fall for Theo’s bait and end up in an argument.

Luci: They’re barely active and mostly use their account to lurk. They rehoot Cameron’s animal posts occasionally.

Penny: New to Owler and posts the weirdest hoots about what gosh she prefers eating. No, Theo, she’s not talking about sushi. Also rehoots random fashion posts she likes.

Harlow: Private account that barely follows anyone and hardly ever posts.

Avery: Has an account under their Canadian alias that Charlie follows. Mostly hoots pictures of the local scenery and the cute pasties the cafe they work at sells.

???: They’re non-corporeal to start off so they can’t exactly hold a phone, but they would love to help you write your hoots.

THEORY: Twilight's Real Name?

I personally headcanon that Twilight's real name is Rollo (in Japanese, it's written ロロ).

It follows Endo's naming convention for all of Twilight's aliases starting with that Lo/Ro/ロ sound (Roland, Lionel, Lawrence, Robert).

It's got German origin and seems fitting since it means "wolf" (alluding to Twilight and his "lone wolf" persona). -> Taken from https://nameberry.com/babyname/rollo [Meaning: From the name hrodwulf from the Germanic hrod, meaning "fame" and wulf, meaning "wolf".] Funny since Twilight is this (in)famous lone wolf spy 😂

[SPOILERS FOR CH. 62]

Then in chapter 62.3 when he reunites with his friends, someone else calls him by his alias "Roland" and his childhood friend says, "Roland? But your name's [redacted]." To which he replies, "Oh...that's just a nickname."

Rollo/Rolo is a common nickname for Roland.

Understanding the Patron-Minette affiliates through their names and aliases

This piece is the result of a hobbyist research project I've spent an unhealthy amount of time working on with the intention of bringing some context and historical significance to the names of all the Patron-Minette's affiliates!

From analysing nineteenth-century slang and investigating real criminal figures as well as their famous schemes, to exploring Hugo's potential literary inspirations, I am a strong believer that a lot of meaning can be discovered behind the names and aliases of these minor characters through close examination.

Below is a list of all 18 of the Patron-Minette affiliates (listed in the same order as Hugo introduces them in the novel), with each character's name accompanied by a short ramble about what their aliases may reference and/or allude to.

If you want to skip to the most *objectively* interesting character names, I would recommend visiting the entries for Laveuve, Homère Hogu, Kruideniers (alias Bizarro), and Mangedentelle first. But, I hope you enjoy reading the other entries too, as almost all of these names have wonderfully complex meanings and references hidden behind them!

**I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I am not French— and therefore I have to rely on resources available to me online (and Julie Rose's English translations of these characters' names, even though I think she often interprets these names too literally) to analyse and translate the names of these characters. So, I sincerely apologise if I misspell or misinterpret any French in the sections below!**

Panchaud; alias Printanier, alias Bigrenaille

Translation in English: Hotwhack; Springlike, Golightly

There is not much to expand upon here thanks to Julie Rose's sufficient translation of Panchaud and his various aliases into English.

'Printanier' and 'Bigrenaille' suggest that the character was fairly spritely and fast. It also arguably implies he is a young and energetic criminal. The name 'Panchaud' is also a great indicator of this character's violent nature.

The fact that the character has three different names— one with a fairly dangerous undertone— seems to me to be a purposeful choice made by Hugo in order to emphasise the character's eagerness to become a notorious and famous criminal, which he does indeed become in the 1840s.

Brujon

Information provided in canon: Comes from a dynasty of Brujons

Unfortunately, I did not find any particularly exciting information or deeper meaning behind the name to speculate over.

To put it simply, 'Brujon' is a French family name that was common in France at the time of the publication of Les Misérables , and remains a prevalent surname today. Nevertheless, this small piece of knowledge is interesting enough to me as it indirectly relates to the concept of the Brujon ‘dynasty’ quite well!

Boulatruelle

Information provided in canon: An old road-mender, who we have met before in Montfermeil

'Truelle' means trowel, and 'boule'— which is very similar to 'boula'— is a slang term for 'head' [source]. When taking these elements together, this makes Boulatruelle's very name a nice reference to the character's obsession with digging for the "buried treasure" in Montfermeil's forests.

The trowel detail might also be a nod to Boulatruelle's occupation as a road mender, since it refers to a mason's tool specifially [source]. And, with 'boule' literally translating to 'ball', perhaps there is also an allusion in the name to ball-and-chain that might connect to Boulatruelle's previous conviction and prison sentence?

Laveuve

Translation in English: the Widow

This name was particularly interesting to research because it could allude to a whole variety of relevant concepts and hence allows for a lot of speculation.

On one hand, the name could just make reference to the fact that Laveuve is a widow, which interestingly would make Laveuve a female character!

Yet, ‘veuve’ (aka 'widow') is also a Temple slang term for ‘rope’. We know this thanks to Babet, who uses the phrase during the Patron-Minette's escape from La Force. This could therefore imply that the character is a criminal known for using ropes or nooses on victims.

More fascinating still, could Laveuve actually be someone pretending to be a vulnerable, widowed woman? Surprisingly, this was a type of criminal scam sometimes famously used by certain criminals in the nineteenth-century. For example, in the 1830s there was a criminal named Jean-Francais Chardon who was a conman and female impersonator known as “la Tante” [source]. Could Laveuve have been a similar kind of criminal?

Finistère

The name appears to derive from the Latin ‘Finis Terræ’, which means ‘End of the world’. Finistère is also the name of a place in Brittany, France. As a result of these factors, I have always associated the character with dock / port work, but of course nothing can be proved of this.

Homère Hogu

Information provided in canon: A black man (Julie Rose translates the phrase as such, but Victor Hugo uses a derogatory term when describing Homère Hogu in the original publication. I have replaced all mentions of the word with ‘n—’ where necessary below)

I found a captivating research paper about the onomastics of Les Misérables which touches on Homère Hogu being a purposeful variant of Victor Hugo’s own name:

Hugo ne s'y trompait pas lorsqu'il confia son “épopée définitive” de la “conscience humaine” (I, VII, 3; OC XI, 201) à un frère anagrammatique: ce bandit, le “n—” Homère-Hogu (III, VII, 4; OC XI, 536), est le hors-la-loi noir parmi les blancs; mais misérable “n—”, il est également par la grâce de la polysémie, celui qui est chargé par un écrivain célèbre d'écrire à sa place un roman, Les Misérables. Un nom étant un moi selon Jean Valjean, on reconnaîtra l'insaisissable poète des misérables dans ce double caché au cœur du roman. Hugo-Hogu.

[Roughly translated into English: Hugo was not mistaken when he entrusted his “definitive epic” of the “human conscience” (I, VII, 3; OC XI, 201) to a brother anagrammatical: this bandit, the “n—” Homère-Hogu (III, VII, 4; OC XI, 536), is the black outlaw among the whites; but miserable “n—”, he is also, by the grace of polysemy, the one who is commissioned by a famous writer to write a novel in his place, Les Miserables. A name being a self according to Jean Valjean, we will recognize the elusive poet of the wretched in this hidden double at the heart of the novel. Hugo-Hogu.]

I really recommend reading the full paper if this kind of topic interests you (click here to access the article). I have a limited understanding of the piece since it is written in French, but the parts that I could comprehend were absolutely fascinating!

Mardisoir

Translation in English: Tuesday Night

I don't have much to say on this name despite undertaking lots of research. It seems to mean nothing more than Tuesday evening / night. Perhaps the name alludes to an activity or event that commonly occurred on Tuesday nights, but I haven't been able to discover any information related to this idea thus far. The only *potential* research avenues that I discovered were:

'Mardi' is slang for beating up someone in Romanian [source], but no such slang seems to apply to the French language.

'Mardi s'il fait chaud' was once a popular proverb that was used in the same way as the English expression 'only when pigs fly' [source]. However, there is no likely connection between this phrase and Mardisoir's name since the phrases share nothing aside from the term 'Mardi'.

Dépêche

Translation in English: Dispatch

Whilst Julie Rose translates the name only to ‘Dispatch’, dépêche is a term that specifically refers to the dispatch of a message or information.

In addition, my own research has evidenced that in thieves' slang, ‘dépêche’ has a slightly different definition— meaning to ‘ease oneself by evacuation’, rather than simply dispatching a message [source].

Therefore there are two potential avenues for the criminal "subspecies" that Dépêche represents. Either the character is a messenger for the group, or perhaps is instead a criminal known for deserting others when things get tough.

Fauntleroy; alias Bouquetière

Translation in English: Flowergirl*

First off, let me debunk any suggestions that this character's name could in any way be linked to the famous story Little Lord Fauntleroy. It would have been impossible, since Little Lord Fauntleroy was published over 23 years after Les Misérables.

The name Fauntleroy is a real surname derived from the phrase 'le enfant le roy', which translates to 'child of the king' [source].

Fauntleroy's alias 'Bouquetière' translates to Flowergirl, likely referring to the character's occupation. Interestingly enough, at this point in history there was a common association between "Flowergirls" and prostitutes (I have previously written about this before), and I think Hugo takes advantage of this connection to coyly indicate to readers that Fauntleroy is a prostitute. Julie Rose even goes so far as to label the character as a "prostitute" in her translation, even though it is never explicitly stated by Victor Hugo.

Glorieux

Translation in English: Glorious

Information provided in canon: A freed convict

I haven't much to add here about the name apart from the related meanings of 'glorieux' that suggest this character might have once being a glorious and renowned criminal.

Aside from its direct translation to 'glorious', 'glorieux' can also mean 'self-satisfied', 'illustrious' and 'distinguished' [source]. This perhaps implies that the character had a particularly successful criminal career in the past.

Yet, I also want to point out the brilliantly ironic and sarcastic element to Glorieux's name! How can this criminal be so 'glorious' if he managed to get imprisoned in jail, and served his whole sentence (note he is a freed convict, which means he served his time in prison and did not escape in any illustrious escape!). I bet Hugo's juxtaposition of alias against the accompanying information that he was a 'freed convict' was intended to give readers a little laugh!

Barrecarrosse; alias Monsieur Dupont

Translation in English: Coachrod

Barrecarrosse’s name is almost certainly making reference to some famous nineteenth-century criminal plots involving horse-drawn carriages being ambushed and robbed by highwaymen and/or padfoots. Note that ‘barre’ means iron rod specifically, and perhaps it specifies the kind of weapon that this criminal might have carried.

Interestingly, Barrecarrosse’s alias, ‘Dupont’, is a common French surname that translates to ‘from the bridge’.

When taken together, both of Barrecarrosse’s names invoke an image in my mind of a shady criminal who hangs around on bridges that are used by carriages to transport goods and people into Paris, waiting to encounter passing carriages and attacking them in order to steal valuables. We are even told later in the novel that this character prowls the Grenelle area, which indeed was located just on the outskirts of the city’s nineteenth-century borders, right next to the Seine.

Lesplanade-du-Sud

Translation in English: South-Esplanade

This alias has me stumped. Esplande means 'precincts' in English [source], and I am assuming the name refers to some location or place— but I have not been able to decipher any further meaning to the name thus far.

If anyone has any insights or suggestions for possible meanings behind this name I would love to hear from you!

Poussagrive

Translation in English: Pushathrush

'Grive' appears to be used in a number of French slang phrases of the nineteenth-century to describe giving out warning calls. This might imply that Poussagrive could have taken on the role of a look-out for the gang, acting like a thrush songbird and calling out when spotting danger.

The multiple meanings of the French word 'poussa' help to support this idea: it has a lot of alternative definitions other than 'push', most of which relate more-so to speech: it can be defined as 'pushed, uttered, prompted, drove, let out, urged, heaved, led him, shoved, thrust, breathed, spurred' [source]

I think it is interesting to additionally note here that 'grive' was also slang in the nineteenth-century for 'army; military patrol ; warder' [source]. So, Poussagrive could also refer to a calling used to alert or command the Patron-Minette in a ‘military’ fashion, ordering them about as if they were some kind of ‘patrol’!

Carmagnolet

The name shares similarities with the famous revolutionary song ‘La Carmagnole’, wherein a carmagnole is the name of a short jacket worn by working-class revolutionary militants [source].

So, perhaps Carmagnolet is a character interested in revolution (which would open up fascinating possibilities for this character in terms of potential connections to Les Amis). Or, might it just mean that this criminal has a rebellious, wildly anarchistic personality. Or, maybe Carmagnolet is simply known by this name because he wears a Carmagnole jacket?

*As I’ve said before I don’t speak French, and therefore don’t know how the added ‘t’ at the end of the name changes its meaning— and would really appreciate it if anybody could share some insight into this!*

Kruideniers; alias Bizarro

Kruideniers is a name with multiple interpretations, yet none seem to give away much of an idea about the character. I've simply compiled all of the unconnected pieces of research I stumbled across below. Curiously, most of the information I sourced points back to the Netherlands rather than to France:

A denier is a type of silver Frankish coin [source]. Interestingly, three deniers make a liard (lots of fun opportunities to speculate over the monetary links and any corresponding connections between the characters of 'Kruideniers' and 'Demi-Liard' here).

'krui' is Dutch slang for 'push or carry forward' [source].

Oddly enough, ‘Kruideniers’ is Dutch for grocer.

As for the character's alias, Bizarro... my research took me down a bit of a rabbit-hole and led me to the fascinating tale of Francesco Moscato, alias Vizzarru. Moscato was an Italian brigand, mass murderer, and seducer. I won't waste time recounting the entire story but if you're interested in reading about Moscato you can do so here.

Whilst the name Vizzarru is not quite Bizarro, what is important to note is that Sir Walter Scott wrote a story about Moscato in 1832 entitled Bizarro (although it was never published at the time!). And, who was known to be a good friend and admirer of Walter Scott? None other than Victor Hugo!

Of course, I cannot prove anything about Hugo taking the name Bizarro from Scott, but its fun to speculate that perhaps there had been a conversation between these two authors! Furthermore, Alexandre Dumas, another friend and rival of Victor Hugo, had taken inspiration from Vizzarru and written about the figure too! Perhaps Hugo and Dumas could have discussed Moscato / Vizzarru / Bizarro at the Club des Hashischins, and Hugo had retained the name in his head?

Mangedentelle

Translation in English: Eatlace

This one was particularly interesting to research, and in this name there is a piece of translation that I disagree with Julie Rose over.

Personally, I think Rose ended up translating this character's name too literally when referring to it in English as 'eatlace'.

Whilst Rose is objectively correct to translate 'dentelle' to lace, my own research has suggested that 'dentelle' is thieves’ argot for 'bank notes, "rags, flimsies, screenes, or longtailed ones"' [source].

To me, this definition of 'dentelle' makes more sense in the context of the name of a Patron-Minette affiliate. It seems significantly more probable that this character's name would have referred to bank notes rather than lace fabric.

However, I am still stumped as to what the 'mange' / 'eat' part of the name is meant to imply or represent. The closest, most logical thing I can think of is that 'mange' in this context translates to 'hunger' or 'appetite', as it meant originally in Old French [source].

If we are to be convinced enough by this research, it would mean Mangedentelle theoretically translates to 'appetite for money'. To me, that makes much more sense than translating the name as 'eatlace'.

Les-pieds-en-l'air

Translation in English: Feet-in-the-air

This is a simple one to explain. The character’s name alludes to a bawdy sex position, and clearly implies that Les-pieds-en-l’air is a prostitute.

Demi-liard; alias Deux-milliards

Translation in English: Half-a-liard; Two Billion

Another relatively easy name to decipher— a demi-liard is a low value term of coinage.

The conjunction between this character's two aliases is wonderfully comedic. With the 'Demi-Liard' alias, this character is described as being extremely poor (if a liard was at one point the smallest coin in France in terms of its monetary value, then a demi-liard would have been even more pitiful!). Yet, the other alias, ‘Deux-milliards’ would suggest that the character is extremely wealthy!

There's very little I can say tbh.

They're a bit of a red flag, very demanding, impulsive (a huge risk-taker), selfish in many ways... Their tropes are def enemies to lovers and "I can fix them".

Dev Log Update: Rewrites, Refinements, Rendering

As of current, some insight into the upcoming update. I refuse to release it until I finish all the WIP choices in the prologue, even if the quality is mid. The gaps having been driving me nuts.

I have refined some of the writing in general so it's either not as wordy, or just better in general. This has lead to some portions being obviously more clean than others since I'm doing it branch by branch, but it's being done. Tensing issues still take me out back but I'm utilizing that for narrative purposes in the beginning at least.

I reworked the Stats screen to be less info dump, more mystery, ect. Anything not relevant to the story as a whole is either not added, or just left to a line.

I reworked the plot and dialogue a bit to make more sense, though there's still some portions that are being rewritten since I'm not too happy with it.

Alia has some official art coming soon (done by someone with actual skill and not me~)

Twine: I actually reorganized it to look better for myself so it's easier to track choice pathways

Gradually learning some quirks with the code, like Stats and carrying choices. I promise the choices have meaning, I just have to plug it in when I master the coding for that, which is currently second fiddle to the content.

Other than the obvious fact I'm plugging the WIP holes, I'm going to ensure the introductions in each Route are plugged before I drop it myself. So as a preview, Acceptance/Wrath both introduce Alia first, and Neutral introduces Akio. The next big update after this drops will include Jin Liang and Lamenta.

If I feel like it, just because of how back and forth they are, I might have a *hint* of Jin Liang for Neutral, but no guarantee.

I gave up on the images since they took up way too many hours trying to fix, I'll get around to it later. Again, content is priority atm. That's the gist folks. It's very slow going due to family matters and just a lack of time. This is a bit of a side project for me, but I'm trying my best lmao

story behind url: Cora's an overgrown bird a character that is so deeply loved by those whose lives he affected, even though he never lived to know the effects his actions had. Likewise, coming back to write him after even a short break feels like the warmest, safest hug.

I named them after the norse goddess of healing, Eir. I thought it'd be funny and a bit ironic, considering they're uh.... them.

Their hobbies are baking and ballet. They used to make candy, but that has since evolved into baking. ("Here, I've made this for you. Hope you like it ♥")

They also collect things; any thing. Eir has a shelf full of random shit they've picked up. Keys, bottle caps, rocks, nails and screws, broken jewelry, trash; nothing is safe. If they think no one wants it, it's in their pockets. ("Ah, another piece for my collection!")

You were at the top of your class. You had your pick of where you wanted to go the Silver Guardians or the White Hawks. But during Graduation, something happened. You lost control of your body and watched as you killed your friends and hurt several people. When you got control again you woke up in jail. Sentence for ten years. No one listened or cared what you said after all killing the United States President's kid was what everyone cared about. What makes it worse you don't remember the 10 years and your abilities are gone.

Now the only thing left to do is to try and rebuild the life that was taken from you. Noah the man who raised you gave you a choice. It was the only choice you had. To become an Instructor for the White Hawks teaching young Heros. He also gave you a small team to be in charge of three students no one can seem to get along with or lead. 12. Atlas- F (Ro)

One of Silver Guardians' strike team leaders. Atlas is well-regarded as very laid back and even fun by her teammates. Then she sees you. She always has her eyes on you. The other thing you notice is she seems drawn to you.

Hair- Ash Blonde, lower back length.

Powers- Sympathetic teleportation, magical particle manipulation.

13. Atargatis or Attina- F (RO)

The crown princess of the Atlanteans. You know her father King Vomox. She is one of the richest people in the world and it shows. Of course, her being a half-breed between an Atlantean and a Siren shows. She seems to want to be friends when she meets you but you suspect she wants more than friendship.

Powers- Empathic Voice, Water Manipulation, Magical object (Spear)

14. Psyche- F (RO)

height- 5.5

One of the villains is a part of the bigger community of villains. She is not seen as regularly anymore by the public. But you remember seeing her once and she took down an entire strike team without breaking a sweat.

Hair- White, upper back length.

Powers- bone manipulation, memory manipulation, and memory erasure.
