Dc x Dp prompt #13: Hell to Pay

They say there are only two things certain in life: death and taxes. That’s why even the Joker doesn’t fuck with the IRS.

However, unfortunately for the Joker the other certainty is death and he has yet to pay his dues. Just like how he could only get away with tax evasion for so long, there are only so many times the Joker can dodge death.

Death is coming to collect, with interest.

And the Joker will have hell to pay.

~ A dark green cloud swirls over the city. From it, emerge three oppressive figures:

The one on the far left with flowing hair like white-hot fire. His vambraces made of (what appeared to be) molten glass stopped under his fingers, which then extend into into claws that seemed to drip lava. He had spiked obsidian pauldrons on his shoulders, fastening a luminous, stark-white cape to his shoulders. He wore a coronet of lightning and wielded a flail that appeared to be made of coal chains and a shrunken Red Giant star.

The second on the far right had a helm of dark iron wreathed in a plume of purple flame. His gauntlets and sword flamed with green hellfire. A pure black sheath seemingly made of void and a silver hunting horn were tied to his waist. He wore an armor forged of shadows and proofed with fear. He rode atop a mighty stead. An inky dark stallion with a curved horn and bat-like wings. His form was constantly slightly shifting depending on the angle which you viewed him making him appear larger and more slippery than he was, enhancing his disquieting nature.

The third stood in the middle, smaller but no less terrifying than her companions. Her hair was wild with movement, only just visible because it appeared as if someone had bound the winds to her head. She wore a tiara made of storm clouds and pearls. She carried with her a spear, the shaft crafted of amazonite and the tip of a clear quartz, almost reminiscent of sea salt. At her hip lay a whip made of a restrained gale and a sea glass knife. She wore armor that appeared to be Greco-Roman in origin: a chest plate made of some sort of coral-like material and a battle skirt decorated with metallic bronze feathers.

They slowly descent on the city, bringing down a sense of power and dread. They paused at the top of Wayne Tower, where the city's vigilantes had all gathered in an attempt to create and feasible plan of action to discern what these beings want. The young woman in the middle speaks and the wind carries her voice. She is not loud but it the whole of Gotham hears her words.

"Greetings, Heroes of Gotham. It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Spirit, Princess and Head Diplomat of the Infinite Realms. This is Samhain, the Fright Knight, loyal knight to the king,” she gestured to her right before switching to her left “and this is Prince Wraith, current General in Chief of the Realms. We come to you as the King’s Guard and entourage. We have official business in your city and wish to civilly notify you of our presence. The King will be arriving shortly and your cooperation would be great fully received.”

Batman moved forward to shake her hand and address the situation.

“I’m afraid that we prefer not to have unknowns operating within the city. Would you be able to tell us what business you have here? Perhaps we could reach an agreement?” Batman tried to negotiate as politely as he could. He did not want to risk offending the evidently powerful beings.

Princess Spirit’s smile sharpened as she thrummed her finger against her knife. She spoke again with an unnervingly pleasant tone.

“It appears you do not understand. We are not asking for your permission.” Her grip around his hand tightened. “ We are informing you.” She finished releasing his hand.

Batman withdrew his aching hand and regarded her with the beginnings of a protest on his lips. She didn’t allow him to speak.

“ This is out of your jurisdiction Batman. This is a matter of the Realms and the Afterlife. Whatever worldly rules or morals you wish to impose on those who enter this city do not apply to us. We will do our best to work within them, so as to appease you and to attempt to maintain a friendly relationship but in the macrocosm of the multiverse and afterlives you have no official power over us. Additionally, we have direct permission to operate here however we see fit from the City Spirit herself, Lady Gotham.”

Batman’s shadow seemed to fluctuated. His and his team's shadows moved from beneath them, closer to the Princess. Lady Gotham, though not manifesting, was making her presence and approval known. Batman could not deny what he was seeing. His team shifted uncomfortably behind him. He appealed to her once more.

“ I see that we can’t stop you. We don’t want to get in your way either. Could you at least tell us why you are here?”

She smiled as if telling a joke, “All will be revealed in time”

Suddenly, there was a loud noise that sounded like tearing fabric. The green clouds mixed with purples and blues and began to churn faster. The cyclone emitted a flashes of bright light. In unison all three of the King’s Guard lifted up from the roof and took place underneath the eye of the wind storm.

Spirit holds her spear aloft. With one swift, commanding move she slams the butt of her spear down, creating a platform out of solidified air.

Wraith bellows out smoke and ash onto the platform to discolor it. With ferocious and precise movements his claws to carve in a sigil, leaving a soft orange glow against the black and gray.

Samhain sheathes his sword and pulls his horn from his waist. He wills his dark stead to rear up as he blows the horn, letting out one loud prolonged cry.

The three warriors stand at attention and Princess Spirit calls the winds to project her voice once more.

“ Now introducing the Ruler of the Infinite Realms, High King of the In-Between, The Great One, The Benevolent King, The Peace Maker, The Guardian of Souls, The One with the Cloak of Stars and the Crown of Frozen Light, The Perfect Balance, Ancient of Space and Reality, The Infinite King: Phantom!”

With a flash of white light a figure appear in the center of the platform. Simultaneously, the three knights bow in reverence.

The King has arrived.

As the Heroes of Gotham regain clear vision they are met with a striking figure.

There stood a toned young man appearing both boyishly young, yet wisened and weathered. He had side swept hair the creeped to the bottom of his neck. His skin was pale with an icy blue tint. He opened his eyes to reveal they shone an electric green. Upon his head rest a crown made of a crystalline material, reminiscent of an aurora. He wore a navy blue cloak that had a rich purple hood lined with stark white fur. The underside displayed a shifting galaxy pattern. His under suit was the same midnight black as Samhain’s. He donned golden arm bands and a gold chest plate in style quite similar to Spirit’s. His hand were covered in snow white gauntlets that matched Wraith’s vambraces.

They all stood in awe, beholden to the almost divine figure.

The king sent them a gentle smile. It was warm and comforting yet sent a chill down their shoulders.

King Phantom began to fly down toward the center of the city, his entourage fell into step behind him. He hovered several hundred feet over Wayne tower and looked down at the city. He then spoke in a booming voice, his tone kind but commanding.

“ I humbly greet the Lady Gotham, her champions, and her citizens,” the shadows curled toward him appreciatively. “ I am grateful for your cooperation in our effort to rectify a great injustice. As High King of the Infinite Realms it is one of my duties to preside over the afterlife. To bring guidance, peace, and justice to the souls under my jurisdiction. Recently, it has been brought to my attention that there is a soul among you who has not only dodged death, but caused great strife to a vast number of souls who call for justice.”

On the roof of Wayne Enterprises Jason and Damian both stiffen, but remain firm in their gaze toward the king. The king looks out at the city and sparing them the quickest of glances. He continues onward.

“ The man formerly know as Jack Napier, now called The Joker. He has avoided death on many an occasion but his life should have ended moment he fell into a vat of chemicals. Since then he has sent hundreds more to the afterlife. He has long yet to pay his dues. That is why on the behalf of justice, restoring balance, and of my subjects I officially condemn Jack Napier.”

“Jack Napier, you have been allowed 24 hours turn yourself into our custody in order to be put on trial for your crimes in the Infinite Realms. Should you fail to turn youself in, we shall take that as an admission of guilt and acceptance to be punished for your actions. After the 24 hours are up, Samhain shall use his horn to summon The Hunt and we shall track you down.”

His gaze passed specifically over Red Hood, one of the Oracle’s drones, Nightwing, Signal, Red Robin, and Batman before he spoke his next words.

“All those souls who have been wronged by the Joker, both living and deceased, who wish to have a hand in their justice have been invited to join The Hunt if they so choose.”

The king lifted his hand, calling the swirling green clouds to his gather in his palm. The clouds swiftly rearranged themselves into a smokey timer hanging in the sky.

An impish smirk graced King Phantom’s face as he let out a malicious laugh and gave his final decree.

“ Your time begins now!”

Health and Hybrids (IX)👽👻💚

[I can't remember the original prompt posters for the life of me but here's a mashup between a cryptid!Danny, presumed-alien!Danny, dp x dc, and whatever prompt made the one body horror meat grinder fic.]

Where we last left off... Wonder Woman has secured the coveted position as The Only Reliable Adult in the sore eyes of an injured half-ghost. World's saddest presumed-alien takes his meds on purpose for once. The author wrestles with Roman numerals.

Danny is not in the container.

He very much doesn’t like the container.

The new lady and all the milling-about humans and his quickfast human have, however, encouraged him back to this room that looks just like the container's room, with one key difference. This one has a bathtub.

Danny touches the water.

It is too hot.

Danny does not want to go into the bathtub.

No one…no one is making him go in the bathtub. But everyone is gesturing, and making encouraging noises, and it makes Danny shrink into the sparse shadows of a partially-lit room, too afraid to get near the water, and too unhappy to cooperate.

It’s too hot. It smells funny in the way that cough drops and antiseptic tastes funny so it’s probably good for him, but Danny’s not a person and the water is too hot for him to put his core into.

The youngest human is so sad that it reverberates throughout the room, moaning and groaning and toying with Danny’s pull-toy fidget, which Danny is kindly letting it keep. It is laying on the floor. Danny does not have any feet for it to trip over right now, but Danny is hovering above it, so no one with a flesh body falls and hurts something when they trip.

Breaking bones hurts. Danny would know.

The new human lady tries to encourage Danny with his rocket ship. It doesn’t work. The bath is too hot even with the rocket ship in it. Danny wishes there was something he could use to change the temperature.

…He reaches over the side of the tub. Danny swishes a finger around in the water.

Nope. Still too hot.

Okay. Danny needs… Something. He needs. Something.

He quietly removes himself from the most familiar human and just…floats around the room. It is mostly bare. There is space for lots of humans to work with lots of technology to make things happen, but the room is mostly empty right now, except that it has a whole bunch of humans and Danny in it.

There isn’t anything helpful in this room. Danny goes to the next room.

(The new human lady follows behind.)

The next room has…the container. Danny hisses when he sees it.

No one does anything.

…Okay. Danny slides further into the room. No one is making him go in. Okay. He can…explore.

There are other things in the room. Danny can’t tell what all of them are, so he just starts opening things. He finds stuff made of wood and cotton. He rips something small in half, and a bandage falls out. He sticks a wet wipe in his mouth before he realizes it’s a wet wipe—that one drops out of his mouth and onto the floor. It tastes so bad.

The human makes a sad noise that might be a laugh too, but Danny can’t interpret now. He’s on a mission. He has more important tasks to finish.

There are more rooms with more things and Danny keeps looking. He finds towels and medical robes in cabinets and machines that do things that Danny can’t tell and tubes of all sorts and packages of medication Danny can’t eat. He keeps opening doors and looking inside and closing them because none of them help.

…There’s some white packets inside of clear plastic wrap. Danny can’t tell what they are. Is this something that he can use? Will it help?

Danny flexes his comeherelookitthis aura with a curl of his tail, and the human buzzes to attention in Danny’s current room.

Danny hands him the pouch.

The human does something to it. The crinkly-shiny wrapper falls to the floor. The human makes a noise, the packet creaks ominously, and the human holds out its hands so that Danny can take the packet back.

He takes it back.

Danny immediately drops the packet back to the floor because it’s hot!!!! Ugh!!!! If he had known that the package was one of the hot packets, he wouldn’t have bothered!

He floats elsewhere into the room, sulking. He opens more cabinets and doesn’t close them after. He—

Wait.

—Danny feels out with a hand. It’s…cold inside.

Danny shoves his face into the cabinet. There’s no food, just little vials, but yes! Cold! He shoves a hand inside and roots around, even though he is also trying not to crush or break the little vials. The white-coated humans don’t get close or try to get him, but they do make sad noises. Danny hummmmms an apology. But—

Out of the fridge comes squishy packs. There is nothing in them but squishy wet material. They are only cold.

Perfect!

Danny grabs as many as he can with his hands and one in his teeth and his teeth tear through the plastic a little and he kind of tastes the goo inside (gross!), but he has armfuls of cold packs and they are all very good at being cold packs.

The buzzing human comes back to find him and laugh, laugh, laugh all the way through the soft layers of the universe, but Danny doesn’t care, and also he needs it to show Danny where the bathtub is again so he can go sit in the gross medicine water. He might be a little lost.

Thankfully, once Danny stops moving and just stands around, it does. Great!

The lady is still there with the rest of the humans. Whatever. Danny spits the cold pack in his mouth into the bathtub and medicine water probably goes everywhere, but he can’t tell and doesn’t care. The rest of his pile he dunks into the tub by himself.

Now. Danny sticks an arm in the water.

It’s…better. Not so warm. Danny could probably tolerate it now. He doesn’t want to, sure, but he’s also covered in his own waste products and hasn’t cleaned anything in ages and ages and who knows how long. So probably washing out his insides in uncomfortably warm water and a little bit of cold pack medium is better than, uh…not doing that.

Danny slides carefully into the bathtub. Gross. The water is gross. Also it smells bad. Wait. Could he smell before?

He sniffs again. His hands slide through the water, and Danny has to work not to make himself intangible so that he doesn’t get wet. Getting wet is the point right now. He brings one of the cold packs a little bit closer to his body, the cool water radiating from it, and gently splashes water onto his abdomen.

Danny can’t exactly tell where and how he’s injured, and this form hides his wounds even from himself. Still, he remembers…he remembers most of the bad things. Being pinned down. The restraint bruises.

The bright lights.

The…scalpels…

When the human lady is suddenly at his side again, Danny flinches back into invisibility. She doesn’t yell at him for disappearing, or pull out a weapon to punish him.

She has ice packs in her soft flesh hands. One by one, without looking where Danny is hiding in thin air, she drops them into the bath, cooling it further.

…Danny quietly slithers back out of the shadows. The woman makes a quiet noise, and then she leaves the side of the tub.

He doesn’t know how to respond. He continues to wash himself by gently splashing water on his torso. There’s organs under there he’s gotta clean. Probably. If not, he ought to wash anyway.

Huh. There’s no soap here. Can he get soap? Maybe the weird water is supposed to be the soap. Bathwater doesn’t exactly lather, though.

Whatever. Danny washes everything from his sore scalp to his largely-nonexistent toes/tail. The water turns a filthy, corroded black-brown. Danny doesn’t even ask if the white-coated humans want anything to do with the water; he doesn’t want to see them, and this is nasty.

He pulls the stopper out. The water goes down. Danny watches it drain.

…Okay. So. They’re on the moon. Where does his gross water go? Danny hopes they don’t recycle it. A base full of mostly-humans probably doesn’t know how to filter ectoplasm out of the water supply. Or, depending on what they know or don’t know, they might not even know they have to.

Do they know what Danny is?

Danny hopes they don’t. Maybe they would give him back to the lab if they did.

…He doesn’t want to think about that. He wants another bath. Danny fusses with the taps by the bathtub long enough that the human lady comes back, with her fully articulated fingers that can grasp and twist and pull.

This time Danny gets cold water, which he likes. He doesn’t like that she’s so close, but he appreciates the help. The tub fills, and Danny washes again, and the lady comes back with a very soft towel that Danny wants to add to his bedding.

Danny definitely pushes the towel through his body a few times. It’s mostly to get the most water off of his body as possible, even though the human woman keeps her attention on him as he does.

He doesn’t relinquish the wet towel.

The woman holds her hands out for it.

…Danny scoots a little further back. It’s a nice towel. He wants it on his cot so that the sheets don’t absorb as much waste ‘n blood ‘n stuff.

One of the other humans in white walks forward, and Danny pushes himself as far back as he can go. It ignores him. It hands a second towel to the human lady with the red colors, and walks away.

The human lady turns back to Danny. She holds out her hand and a fresh towel, not suffused with contaminated medicine water.

…Kay. Danny can do Tradesies.

Danny gets a new towel, is nice and dry, and roams invisibly back to his cot.

The sheets are all nice and new when he gets there. The humming human’s little friends are all there, chatting and toying with Danny’s stuff. Hey!

He makes the head and his chest sticking through the ceiling visible to human eyes, and he hisses. They scatter quickly. It’s a little funny—he’s not actually mad at them, but they can’t tell, since they can’t hear the little tones in his core. Danny drops to float over his cot, lays down the towel, wraps himself in it, and puts his things back into his bed.

It’s kind of like having a grave. It’s nice and cozy.

When the small humans poke their heads out from behind the curtain again, Danny purrs so that they know he’s laughing at them.

If they fuss, that’s their fault. Danny pulls his rocket ship into his pillows, finds a stretch toy that’s easy to chew on, and eases himself onto his cot for a nap.

Small Town Sheriff

Natasha Romanoff x Reader

Summary- Natasha’s mission is to keep you safe. Natasha never fails a mission, well, usually. Based on a request.

Crime scenes, murder, detective work, suspects, interrogations, clues. These are things you know all too well. It’s what you’ve trained for. Gone to school to study for. Have years and years of experience with.

What you don’t have an abundance of experience with is sharing your caseload with entitled, big city cops. Or in this case cop, singular. A red haired, five foot five, over confident, smug, cop.

Sometimes when cases involve higher scale investigations the FBI have to come in. But considering your small town is located in what you consider "the back ass of nowhere” that doesn’t happen often. Maybe one or two cases tops in the past ten years. Both times, the perp had come into town looking for a place to hide from the authorities. It’s why everyone in your town is weary of outsiders; they bring trouble.

Everyone knows everyone in a town like yours. That’s how, when Natalia Roman first set foot in your office, claiming to be your partner for the case you’d just opened, you’d immediately spotted her as an outsider. Alluring, but an outsider nonetheless.

At first her charming demeanor and kind smile had honestly captivated you. She was professional, always handling her job with the utmost care. She always made sure that things were in order, warrants, permits, evidence, everything. She was a huge help. She was also funny, never failing to make you laugh or bring a smile to your face. Despite your town's unspoken rule against outsiders, you found that you genuinely liked spending time with her. She made the usual uneventful days at work more enjoyable, even making you look forward to going to work to see her.

But then you began to notice how, sometimes, when she thought you wouldn’t notice, she mentioned things she shouldn’t know. Things about you or other residents in the town that she couldn’t have found out from any files or town gossip. The latter being because everyone refused to talk to her. Something that got in the way of her interviewing witnesses, which you didn’t really mind. It just meant that she couldn’t do interrogations alone, so you more or less always did them together.

Then there was this one witness you brought in for questioning who Natalia straight up refused to leave you alone with. You even had to pull rank, saying that because it was your town and your case, you should be able to question the witness alone. The witness, a smug man, refused to talk in her presence; something that struck you as odd. What you found even more odd was the hardened look she directed toward the man when she thought you weren’t looking.

Natalia, surprisingly, disagreed, saying how she technically ranked above you and how she couldn’t leave you alone with a potential dangerous witness. She even became hostile, saying that if you refused to cooperate she would have you removed from the case. That was the one and only time Natalia had pushed back on a boundary you’d set. The speed at which she moved from her usual kind demeanor to almost threatening made you pause.

After that, you’d immediately tagged her in your mind as untrustworthy, as outsiders usually are in your town.

You couldn’t figure out what her motivation was for being here, only that she’d lied about the real reason she’d come in the first place. You know for certain because you’d called one of your friends at the FBI and asked about her. They knew nothing of her, not her name, not what she looked like, nothing. As far as they were concerned there wasn’t even an agent in your town.

Not one belonging to them anyway.

Your friend had urged you to stay away from her. To allow them to call it in, send you some backup and have her hauled out of there. But you refused. Some part of you told you it was better to keep her close by. That she needed to be here, your gut instincts told you so. And they’d never let you down before, so why should you believe they would now.

Right now, as you lay on the ground bleeding, you think back to that thought and scoff. You should’ve let your friend come in and take her in for questioning. Maybe then there wouldn’t be a bullet sized hole in your thigh.

It hurts like hell and there’s a lot of blood, too much blood. You’ve been shot before, it’s kind of inevitable in your job. But that was different to this. There’s a searing pain that spreads through your whole body each time you try to move even an inch. The blood pooling from your leg is a deep, dark red. It’s a fatal shot. You know that. The bullet probably nicked your femoral artery, meaning you're going to die soon. Alone and bleeding out on the floor.

You can’t help but laugh at the thought. Of all the places to die of course you’d end up doing it here. I’m a run down old warehouse at the edge of the town.

You’d followed that same suspect out here, the one that started your distrust with Natalia. You’d seen her put something under the hood of his car as you were driving home and decided to follow him, wanting to see what it was she put there.

Apparently he wasn’t too fond of being trailed. Something you wish you’d done more stealthy. He led you inside, giving the impression he thought he was alone, then, when you least expected it, he shot you.

“You think this is funny?” He asks, a perplexed look on his face as he hovers over you. Placing his booted foot on top of your bullet wound he presses down, a sickening smile spreading over his face as you scream out in pain. “Not laughing now are you.”

“Please.” You beg as he puts more of his body weight on your leg. At this point you’re convinced the bullet has lodged itself into your bone.

“Please.” He mocks, a fake pout on his face. “How pathetic. You’re meant to be sheriff and you’re here begging like a little bitch.”

You close your eyes as shame washes over you. He’s right, you’re better than this, you can do more than this. Taking a deep breath you pull together every bit of strength you have inside you. In a quick motion you lift your uninjured leg to bend it back against your chest before kicking him full force into the knee.

The man drops to the floor, a yelp leaving his mouth as he hits the ground with a thud. Without a second's hesitation, he lunges toward you, rage clear in his eyes as he screams. “You bitch!”

Acting on pure instinct, and the last of your adrenalin, you kick him in the face, a sickening crunch sounding through the room before his unconscious body hits the floor, blood pouring from his nose.

Your body, weakened from the blood loss, slumps back against the ground. You vaguely register a noise from the front of the house, the front door slamming open and hitting against the wall behind it with a violent smack. Fast passed footsteps echo off the walls, someone’s running through the house.

“Y/n.” A voice you recognise sounds off somewhere in the room. “Oh shit.”

You can feel someone lifting your leg, wrapping a bandage around it. The pain you feel at the action has you attempting to shuffle away from them, wanting to curl into yourself to protect yourself from the pain. Strong hands still you by your shoulders, one going to cup your cheek before both disappear back to bandage your leg.

You think the person is talking to you. Something that sounds a lot like your name keeps being spoken into the room, but you can't process the words, not really. Not with your hearing fading in and out as you battle against the unconsciousness that wants so badly to consume you.

The bandage around your wound tightness to an intolerable level, the pressure added to the gash on your leg making you cry out in pain. “I know, I’m sorry.”

You want to tell them to stop. That it hurts too much. You're too tired. But your voice doesn’t seem to be working, instead all that comes out is a whimper of pain.

The person hovers over you, a messy blur of red, black and pale skin. You blink your eyes to rid yourself of the bleariness, willing yourself to focus on the person trying to save your life.

The first thing your eyes settle on is a pair of green orbs. They’re so pretty. They hold so much concern and what looks to be fear but god, they are so, so pretty. Her hair comes into focus next, along with the rest of her. Natalia, you think, and you can’t help but be grateful that it’s her who found you.

“Just stay awake. Okay? Please. Help will be here soon.”

Her mouth is moving, but you can’t hear a word she’s saying. So you just keep your eyes locked on hers. How could you never have noticed how beautiful they are before.

“I should have been here sooner. I shouldn't have left you alone. I should have known you’d do something like this. Shit!”

Natasha continues to hold pressure to the wound, her hands trembling slightly as she does so, until help arrives. You drift in and out of consciousness on your way to the hospital. Each time you wake you look groggily for Natalia. She’s always positioned to your left, her hand holding yours tightly.

This time when you wake Natalia is not next to you but standing at the foot of your bed arguing with a man wearing a long black coat. “You were supposed to watch her Natasha! To keep her safe! How could you let this happen!”

Natasha stands in a defensive position. Her shoulders squared and her jaw clenched as she faced the man in front of her. “I got distracted. It won’t happen again.”

Natasha? You think to yourself. But before you can finish the thought you drift into the darkness again.

“Oh god, I’m so sorry, y/n.” Her voice whispers into the room. You’re waking up, slowly, but you keep your eyes closed, not watching to interrupt her. “I was supposed to protect you but instead I got distracted by you and you got hurt. I’m so sorry.”

Something wet drops onto your hand, it takes you less than half a second to realize it's a tear. “Nat?” You ask, your voice horse from not being used. Slowly you blink open your eyes to see Natasha with a shocked look on her face. Quickly she looks between your eyes to your hand held securely in hers.

“Sorry.” She mumbles. “Thought you were asleep.” She lets go of your hand, rounding the table to get you a glass of water. Wordlessly, she hands you the glass and you drink from it gratefully.

Natasha takes a minute to watch you, letting the fact that she did in fact save you sink in.

You wince as you try to sit up in your bed. Surprise filling you at the speed in which Natasha found herself at your side trying to help you. Once you're settled Natasha sits in the chair she previously occupied.

She’s acting differently than she did before. Something about her giving a more authentic vibe. She holds herself differently, her voice is a few pitches lower, even her eyes look to be a slightly darker shade of green.

“Who are you?” You ask, preparing yourself for a long, complicated answer.

Natasha shifts in her chair, uncomfortably. She wants you to know her, she wants you to be around for a long time. But she’s not sure if she can trust you just yet. So she settles on easing you into it.

Shaking her head Natasha sends a soft smile your way. “Another day. For now, you need to rest.”

You reluctantly accept her answer, wanting to know everything there is to know about her but also understanding there needs to be a certain level of trust for that to happen.

You lay back down on the bed, Natasha watching from her seat as your head hits the pillow and your eyes instantly become heavy. “Will you be here when I wake up?” You ask, a certain vulnerability to your voice. You want her to be there when you wake up. You want her to stay.

Natasha fights against herself to tuck a stray hair behind your ear, finding you too adorable for words at that moment. “Yes.” She answers. “I’ll be here when you wake up. I won’t go anywhere.”

“You promise?” You ask without missing a beat.

Natasha smiles at that, this time leaning forward to tuck that stray hair behind her ear when she gets the urge. “I promise.”

With that you fall asleep. Natasha’s hand held between both of your own. The warmth from it lulling you to sleep as you think about what tomorrow has in store for you.

It’s not hard to understand. If a person has a biology degree but works as a music producer, they’re not a biologist, they just have a biology degree.

If someone researches a subject but never got a degree in the subject or research in general, they are a hobbyist, not an academic.

Hey, thanks for coming here and providing this stone cold take!

See, if a person has a degree in a topic, despite not working in the field, they are, by definition, an -ist/academic of said field. A doctor, after all, doesn't stop being a doctor or lose that knowledge just because they teach biology for a few years. I became an Egyptologist when I was handed my degree the first time, and I'm an Egyptologist every time I answer an ask on this website. I also worked as an Egyptologist for a time. I take it that me no longer being paid just means they revoked my title? That's not how it works!

An academic, by dictionary definition, is someone who is related to education or scholarship or someone with an academic viewpoint/scholarly background. If someone devotes their time to scholarship of a certain field, then yes in one way it is a hobby, and in another way they're an academic. It is elitist to state that people who have great knowledges of subjects from their own careful research cannot be considered in any form 'academics' simply because they do not possess the bit of paper that says 'I studied this for 3 years at university'. University academics would not have half the knowledge they do have if it wasn't for non university academics. We work cooperatively, sharing the knowledge that we have. Is the hairdresser who showed university academics how she'd worked out the method for styling Greek and Roman hair not an academic? No, she didn't have a degree, but she worked on her hobby of a love of hairstyling through history and that became academic knowledge. She then shared this with university academics, who recognised the academic scholarship and took her research forward. She is, by definition, someone with academic knowledge of the history of hairstyling, and her contribution, due to lack of formal degree, should not be dismissed as merely 'hobbyist', because that is grossly elitist.

The fun thing about 'academia' is that it's flexible, despite what most people think. More people are academics than you might imagine. Doesn't mean you have to take all their word as gospel, and you have to be careful about what information they're giving you and the inherent biases therein. However, you have to do this same process with someone with a degree in a field too. We are not immune to being biased or presenting incorrect information by purview of X number of years at an academic institution, nor is anyone who is paid to be an academic exempt from this. It's about critical assessment of the information presented to you. Those who know what they're talking about present themselves in ways that aren't shouty and flashy. I know instantly when I'm talking to someone who's spent time doing research into a topic, whether formally or as a hobby, because of how they present themselves and their research. You can peer review a person and their knowledge by how they demonstrate it. Trust me on that. Other academics can tell the difference between a person who is 'I read a few books on this once' and one who is 'I have spent years of my life looking over different things and comparing them critically.'

Examine your own biases here; a) your comments aren't even what the original post was about, and b) your definition of what constitutes an academic is extremely narrow, so much so that it excludes a multitude of people, to whom academics would say 'they are one of us'.

Entering Alphys' Secret Lab, he finds a test tube with determination. He puts determination into the flowers at the place where Chara is buried. The flowers came to life, but due to the fact that Chara's soul split into many parts, each flower acquired a particle of Chara's character.
