Dinofact #76
Dinovember day 9: Yi qi
Yi, a genus of scansoriopterygid dinosaur, has the shortest generic name of any dinosaur, containing only two letters. The specific name, Yi qi, is the shortest possible under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, with four letters. This distinction is shared with Ia io, a species of bat.

hey who let dinosaurs do that
per hartman et al, 2019:
eumaniraptora - deinonychosauria -- archaeopterygidae & anchiornithinae (165-122 mya) -- dromaeosauridae --- unenlagiinae ---- rahonavis ostrami (70 mya) --- microraptorinae (125-76.5 mya) - avialae -- scansoriopterygidae (165-156 mya) -- avebrevicauda (136 mya - present)
possible fliers in bold. archaeopteryx (flew with feathered wings) rahonavis (flew with feathered wings) microraptor (flew with *four* feathered wings) scansoriopteryx (flew with membrane wings w/ some feathers) modern birds and their relatives (fly with feathered wings)

Hello I saw ur tags that you know about dinosaurs please tell me about weird dinosaurs (/not forced)
Thanks for the ask! I'm more than happy to info dump about my interests! Anyway here's a list of my favourite weird dinosaurs:
Yutyrannus
Yutyrannus is so far the largest known feathered dinosaur (the largest known specimen's weight is estimated at about 1.4 metric tons). I love floofy dinos and I think it's interesting that we haven't yet found feathers on dinos of comparable size. Of course there's a loooong debate about whether the really big guys like Tyrannosaurus had feathers but so far there's no definitive evidence one way or another.
I love Yutyrannus I just think they're so cute :) I love big floofy animals <3
Scansoriopterygidae
Scansoriopterygidae is a family of dinosaurs with a very weird and unique body plan. They have wings, but unlike their close relatives, the birds and dromaeosaurs, their wings are made of thin membranes stretched between their fingers, a lot like a bat. This family also happens to contain the dinosaur with the shortest binomial name: Yi qi.
Psittacosaurus
Themost remarkable thing about Psittacosaurus, in my opinion, is just how much we know about it. Many dinosaurs are known from extremely fragmentary remains, with most of their skeletons being inferred from better-known relatives. But we have specimens of Psittacosaurus that are so well-preserved that we can even know what colours it was.
The preserved skin that we have shows that it was mostly brownish, with black spots around its shoulders, and dark patches around its face and cloaca (imagine putting in all that hard work to become a paleontologist, and then you have to spend hours studying a dinosaur's butt. I might die of embarrassment if that was me).
I also love Psittacosaurus because it's just so goofy looking. It's a small, early-offshoot ceratopsian. It didn't have quite the level of ornamentation of, say, triceratops, but it does have two horn-like structures on its cheeks. Another weird thing about Psittacosaurus is the row of long bristles at the base of its tail. Scientists still aren't sure what they are, or why they're there.
Spinosauridae
Spinosauridae is a clade containing the well-known dinosaur Spinosaurus, and many lesser known dinosaurs that are all very weird. Ever since the discovery of Spinosaurus, this clade has baffled scientists. There have been endless arguements over the last few years over the lifestyle of these animals, from how well they could swim, to what they ate, to their hunting style, to just how aquatic they were.
One interesting recent discovery may give us some insight into these animals: a study of the skull of Irritator (yes, they named a dino Irritator, it's a long story) showed that as the jaw opened, it widened, similar to how pelican jaws work.
Honourable mention: Cryodrakon
Not a dinosaur, but a very cool-looking pterosaur! I gotta say, "Cryodrakon" is probably the coolest name given to any extinct animal ever.
I'm probably forgetting some dinos but those are some of my favourites!

Just learned about these things from the new Zelda game and holy shit this is possibly the first time I've seen a creature design (outside of a now-defunct speculative evolution project I participated in a long time ago) that does this thing with the spurs coming out of the pelvis to support the trailing edge of the wing membrane instead of the legs. Like, in real life all membrane-winged animals have the membrane attach to the legs (except maybe Scansoriopterygidae whose wing configuration is still unknown) so that the trailing edge is stretched between two limbs that can easily control it, but in fiction you always see all those dragons and other monsters whose legs are free and the membrane just kinda goes to the body wall so the trailing edge flops uncontrollably (Monster Hunter Stories 2 is the most egregious example I've seen - the wing membrane of a monster in flight straight up flutters loosely like clothes on a line). And this kind of pelvic spur is exactly what Ive come to see as the best possible soluton to the Wing Membrane Leg Bypass problem, but it's pretty wild to think that someone working on LoZ of all things may have cared as much about the biomechanincs of fictional flying animals and independently arrived at the same conclusion.

oh man this bracket is going to be SOOO hard for me, I love so many of the guys that got in so much it's unreal. also, as someone who nominated the Sharovipteryx, I am so glad to see that wonderful extinct freak get in. I was torn between nominating the yi qi/ambopteryx vs sharviopteryx as a "failed evolutionary experiment for flight" but personally determined that the sharviopteryx is WAY higher up there in bizarro factor compared to Scansoriopterygidae as a genus lol
I know!! Honestly filtering the list was really difficult once I got past duplicates, I wanted to let everyone in!! And I'd never heard of Sharovipteryx, but they are SO cool I love them

Shuu’s Thoughts on Koto Division
Tumblr media
Misa Arakawa
“Big and powerful Misa-chan, right? You know what’s cool? She’s one of the few big company people that I havent’ been hired to snoop on. I don’t know much about technology, but she sure does seem to track any dirt! Which is impressive for sure! I mean, I have had to spy on other big bosses, but usually whenever I get hired for that kind of thing, I can find at least one thing to report back on! But nobody, and I mean nobody wants to even touch Misa-chan! That must mean that she’s super nice right? Or maybe she makes some super incredible life-changing technology!”
Chizuru Tenjo
“Having siblings that look like you can be a problem sometimes. I mean, I got three identical sisters and they really hate being compared to each other! So, they work together to stand out from each other. Mikasa took the strongest route and dyed her hair black, since she was annoyed by the comments about being a triplet the most. Which, it worked! I’ve met a couple of her friends and they get super-duper surprised when they find out about Ichigo and Niko!”
“I think I’m just trying to say that… Chizuru-chan shouldn’t have done what she did to Mitsuru-chan. If only she didn’t act on her emotions, she could have changed her life by so much... Surprisingly, I find that a lot of people who do crimes of passion confess their feelings of regret later in time. But despite how much they regret it, nothing can change. I only hope that Chizuru-chan doesn’t do it again. Otherwise, she might end up facing a worse sentence than what she was given before…”
Junko Tetsuya
“So cuuute! She looks like a doll! A big one too! Ah, I guess most people are taller than me though. Still, I don't let it get me down! It just means I get to climb up people and cuddle them, like a scansoriopterygidae~!”
“Still, Junko is so pretty. I kinda want to take her shopping in Shibuya. I bet there are a lot of clothes that would suit her… Ramu-chan would probably love designing clothes for her too! Uwaaah! I wanna meet Junko-chan already!”
Toxic Love
“I love the name, but why did they choose it? They seem nice! I don’t get how they could be toxic, if they have the capacity to be kind and caring. Maybe they’ll show their true nature in battle, huh? Then, we can see if they live up to the name!”

Bestiary: Wyvern
Tumblr media
Wyverns (Wyvern wyvern) are an extent relative of a group of non-avian dinosaurs called scansoriopterygids that are native to Europe. Origin/evolutionary history: It's unknown which scansoriopterygid they split off from, but they've managed to survive the K-Pg mass extinction event that wiped out around 75% of all life on Earth 66 million years ago. They remained very small creatures until abundant food sources rose, and thus have even managed to give rise to varied relatives that split off from them like Sea Wyverns, Royal Wyverns, Amphipteres, Quetzalcoatlus, Jaculus, and Cockatrices. The common Wyvern made its home throughout Europe, but the population has predictably dwindled greatly due to human activity. Physiology/biology: Wyverns are roughly around the same size as Megabats (also known as flying foxes or fruit bats), albeit slightly larger mostly due to them having an elongated head and neck, and an even longer tail, which gives them a wingspan of 5 ft and a body length of 6 ft. They're covered fuzzy fur-like feathering save for the face, front of the throat, lower back, legs, and most of the tail. A male's horn-like crest is bright and vibrant with rainbow coloration for display and have other colors like red, white, and purple on their bodies whereas the females have much duller brown and black coloration on their bodies and lack the tail feathers, save for the "stinger" which is a specialized venomous quill, similar to the ones found on Manticores and Chimeras. Their bites are also venomous but they are noticeably weaker than Dragon venom, sometimes Wyverns are even able to spit out venom like Dragons. Even without venom their bites and claws can still deal some rather nasty lacerations, especially with the front incisors on the top jaw. Their hunting methods towards small to medium-sized prey items like mice, rats, fish, rabbits, birds, deer, and hogs involve either just killing them with fangs and claws should the prey already be really small and weak enough and envenomation and/or blood loss to wear them down before finishing them off. As they've evolved powered flight, they're able to fly and stay airborne at a distance of approximately a quarter of a mile before needing to stop. Behavior: Wyverns are usually solitary creatures, until mating season in the spring, but have also been shown in flocks occasionally, during the mating season around 20-30 individuals are present, while there's around 6-14 within an occasional flock. If disturbed they'll become greatly more fierce and capable of some damage, even more so than to disturb a single individual which is already quite capable of harming a human or two. When courting during mating season the male will lift its head straight up but with its front part of its body lowered while its rear is raised up as well, with the tail high up in the air swinging, and then proceed to make some low-pitched rumbles and clatter its teeth. If the female is won over then they'll go with their male to a more private area to breed, usually a large enough temporary nest already occupied by another animal, which they'll chase off or slay with ease Weaknesses/termination methods: As they're small and lightweight animals, a simple well-placed hit from a bullet, bladed, or blunt weapon is more than enough to slay a Wyvern, but due to them often using hit and run tactics while being aerial can make it difficult, so they commonly have to get grounded to be easily slain, usually bolas or a net are used if the area's not as compact and closed enough for them to willingly fight on the ground. Containment/handling procedures: The containment area for Wyverns are large aviaries approximately 60 ft all around except for the ceiling, the peak of which is 70 ft in height. 6-12 individuals are to be contained within such aviaries, along with smaller branching out sections built around the dome to avoid infighting. Personnel wishing to enter the containment area are required to wear one-piece leather suits with plastic glass masks for facial protection, and to be armed with a low-grade cattle prod, a tranq pistole, and a couple of rabbit hind legs. Prey animals like rabbits, bats, birds, and deer are to be deposited into the aviaries at least once a week. Wyverns can be trained but never be fully domesticated, and it's best to get one when they're hatchlings, where they'll imprint on the first creature they'll see. I heard somewhere that dinosaurs took to the air seven times. You seeming knowlegable about them. I know of birds, microraptors and scansoriopterygidae, and was wondering if you knew more. I am not used with Tumblr etiquette, feel free to disregared this post if I should have sent it.
While I don't know about seven times specifically, there's also Rahonavis, an unenlagiid maniraptoran which appears to also have evolved flight! Also, the position of Anchiornis isn't fully ascertained, so that's another possible flight event, although it's likely to be pretty close to avialans (if not an avialan itself).
For scansorios, it's not certain that they had the capacity for powered flight (they were more likely gliders), but it can't be ruled out either and that would be awesome!
Another pretty wild hypothesis I heard of (which most likely isn't true unfortunately) is that maniraptorans were originally flighted, with the non-flighted guys like Velociraptor being secondarily flightless!
