wip snip 5.1

i've been tagged a bunch of times over the past few weeks to post wip snips and only had the last few chapters of star splitter to post, so i bailed. i finally have something new to preview!! have a bit of the gilmore girls fic, still in progress. 🥰

Just about 8 years ago, the bell over the doorframe jingled violently as Draco Malfoy threw the door open and swept in, already talking. “Bloody hell, that snow is abominable,” he was saying. He hefted a bundled, starfish-shaped form that would turn out to be a toddler by his hip, a pram scooting behind them and leaving a wet trail on Harry’s floor. With a flick of his wrist, the pram had folded up and nestled in the corner of the dining area, dripping there ignored, as Draco descended upon the counter much the same as he did almost every day.

“You, there—please tell me this place has something warm to—” And then Draco froze, because back then he had not done this every day; this was the first time, and more specifically the first time he had seen Harry Potter in the flesh since their eighth year of Hogwarts.

“Malfoy,” Harry had said, eyeing the puffy bundle warily. He didn’t know it was a toddler then; every bit of Scorpius was covered up and radiating Warming Charms. In hindsight, he was probably sweating, but Harry was to later learn that Scorpius had been a quite agreeable child until he learned to read—an apparent mistake that Draco despairs of having made a few times a week—and he made no complaints even dropped onto a stool as he was, propped up against his father.

“What are you doing here?” Draco, then Malfoy, had demanded. He looked utterly thrown and somehow offended, as if Harry’s existence in his own place of business was a grave insult to him.

“This is my place,” Harry said, and then as an instinctive response to Draco’s disbelieving scoff, he added, “I own it.” He’d hoped Draco would pick up on the implied threat—don’t be an arse or I’ll kick you out.

“This place is called Al’s,” Draco said accusingly. “You’re not Al.”

“Nope, I’m not. I’m Harry.” When Draco stared at him, Harry clarified, “Harry Potter.”

“I know you’re—who is Al, then?” Draco went pale beneath his winter flush. “Wait. Did you name this place after—Dumbledore?” He whispered the name as if ashamed, and Harry supposed that was about right, though it garnered him little sympathy.

Harry let that dread sit on Draco’s face for a few moments before he said, “No, it was already called Al’s when I bought it. Didn’t feel like changing the name.” He had changed everything else about it, though, spending one exhausting summer converting it from a pub no one really liked to go to anymore to a greasy spoon that people liked much more.

Harry had not opened this place and kept it open so he could be insulted and bullied; he was long past the time in his life when he would accept that, especially from the likes of Draco Malfoy. And so he opened his mouth once again to tell Draco to get out—ignoring all the questions he had for him, like what he was doing in this town, out in the snowstorm, carrying some sort of doll, maybe?

Before he could say so, and even before Draco could interrupt, the doll made a noise that made Harry startle and drop the rag he’d been wiping down the counter with. The doll made another noise, reached out, and grabbed the rag.

“Mine!” the doll said, lifting its head until a nose poked out of its bundling. That was when Harry realized that what Draco had set down on the stool was a toddler.

“Not yours,” Draco said as Harry tried to process this. “Let it go, Scorpius, it’s disgusting!”

“Oh,” said Scorpius, in a very wobbly sort of voice. His head tipped up so much that Harry could now see wide eyes, which were a complex hazel shade that made him really start to wonder what Draco was doing with a toddler. Said eyes were glistening slightly, and to accompany the look, Scorpius said, “Okay,” in the saddest little voice Harry had ever heard. He dropped the rag back on the counter; he could barely move his arm in his heavy, puffy coat.

“He can have it,” Harry said quickly; he grabbed up the rag and tried to hand it back, unable to deal with that stricken face.

I just finished Farscape S1 again and I think I'm gonna cry. First I was gonna say that they just don't make shows like this anymore, but then I remembered that they never made shows like this in the before either, except for that time when they made Farscape.

It's so weird in such a powerful way. The design choices alone will never leave me alone ever. I'm obsessed, I can't stop staring. Everything is batshit and John Crichton the human, whom we initially expect to chiefly relate to, responds to the batshitness by going increasingly batshit himself, which allows us to view him from the perspective of the alien characters. Suddenly, we see the human as just as alien as everyone else, and this happens again and again, and it's so well done. At the same time, he only becomes more endearing. Aren't we all lost in the chaos? When he chooses gentleness and kindness again and again, I'm overjoyed.

Aeryn is. Aeryn is everything. I love her so much. She's everything, I don't have the words.

And gods, D'Argo has so much soul. Nothing but your standard warrior stereotype on the surface, but underneath, he has such a complex and vulnerable heart. And he's so young. So, so young.

I love Zhaan as a Pa'u and my heart fucking aches for her. I so wish she could have remained happy. I get so angry with the show for taking that from her, but somehow it only seems to increase my obsession with it.

Chiana, who only knows how to engage with the world as an object of desire. It's the oldest story in the book, and yet no one ever seems to tell it from the girl's perspective. Farscape does. Farscape lets her be a real person.

And Farscape does all of this so subtly. You can miss all of this and still enjoy the show, but it's there, and it's incredible.

I haven't mentioned Pilot or Crais yet, but gods, I love Pilot so much, and I'm so weak for the kind of plot twist the end of S1 has in store for Crais. I also haven't mentioned Rygel. The truth is that he annoys me deeply, but I'm also acutely aware that he's essential to this story that I'm so obsessed with. He's one of the many, many mosquito bites of this show, and I just can't stop itching, and it's frustrating as hell, but it feels damn good.

Last but not least, Scorpius. Scorpy Scorps, my man, my sexy, soft-spoken, disgusting blorbo. Oh you tortured torturer in your shiny black fever dream of a fetish outfit. What a backstory you have. I'm gonna stop writing this post now and start watching S2.

IC 4592: The Blue Horsehead Reflection Nebula Image Credit & Copyright: Antoine & Dalia Grelin

Explanation: Do you see the horse's head? What you are seeing is not the famous Horsehead nebula toward Orion, but rather a fainter nebula that only takes on a familiar form with deeper imaging. The main part of the here-imaged molecular cloud complex is reflection nebula IC 4592. Reflection nebulas are made up of very fine dust that normally appears dark but can look quite blue when reflecting the visible light of energetic nearby stars. In this case, the source of much of the reflected light is a star at the eye of the horse. That star is part of Nu Scorpii, one of the brighter star systems toward the constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius). A second reflection nebula dubbed IC 4601 is visible surrounding two stars above and to the right of the image center.

I think the most annoying thing about Drarry and Dramione is the way the ships sort of ruin Draco Malfoy’s character specifically, similar to how Jegulus ruins Regulus and James.

Draco Malfoy is genuinely a very interesting character to study, and we do actually know a lot about his childhood and motivations and capacity for love. The information we get however, is from The Cursed Child, and people largely ignore CC since it is genuinely a bit strange and poorly thought out. But the things it says about the characters is still very interesting, and I don’t think they are entirely mischaracterised in it, seeing as it is canon.

Draco Malfoy is supposed to be arrogant, and big-headed as a child. He’s supposed to be a jackass and a bit horrible. But he’s a kid. That’s the thing with his character, he’s a kid that’s been taught to be bigoted, and as he gets older he does start to question things. JKR really didn’t want people to like him, because he was actually based on boys she didn’t like at her school. But she did right him as a very compelling character.

Draco is the only Death-Eater where the “forced” narrative has any grounds to stand on, however I do prefer the interpretation that he simply didn’t know what he was getting into. Yes, his mothers life was on the line, but I think he would have joined regardless. His father would have spoken about how great and noble the Death-Eaters were, and he probably thought it would be more like the Inquisitorial Squad. But the pressure did get to him, and he at no point actually kills anyone as far as we know. The fact that he saves Harry twice also can’t be ignored, since it would imply that to some degree, he became aware that he was wrong.

Where does CC come into all of this? Well, in CC, even in the Dark Universe, he protects his family above all else. He has fully abandoned any ideals of blood supremacy by the plot of CC, and we get to see a lot of his change. Lucius and Narcissa canonically thought of Scorpius as a bastard because they disapproved so strongly of Astoria. Draco had to have had some redemption for that to make sense, especially since this dynamic was on Pottermore before CC was a thing. Draco states that he never wanted to be a Ministry man, he just wanted to be happy, which would imply he wasn’t happy as a child and had very little freedom. His capacity for love is also very interesting, since he was so in love with Astoria and cared more for Scorpius’ happiness than his own pride. He fully broke into the Potter’s house and started a duel with Harry because he wanted Scorpius to be happy.

All of this is to say, that Drarry and Dramione kind of ignore this. It often makes Lucius into a physically and verbally abusive father, rather than just a controlling one, and sort of makes Draco’s redemption all about love. He starts seeing the light even before he meets Astoria, and she was likely just the final push he needed to change completely. Even in CC though, Draco is still cold and calculating and aristocratic, he’s just less scared. And that makes sense, since he’s an adult.

I find Drarry and Dramione really speedrun his character development, and make it all about some crush he has on this one person, rather than something that happened slowly through life experience. Also, the idea that he was forced to be bigoted always bothered me, since he was just bigoted until he learnt better. Forced to be a DE? Fine, I’ll give it to you, his mothers life was on the line (even if I had a different interpretation). By the end of HP I’d argue he’s still ignorant and has a lot to learn, CC just seems to take place after he’s fully left supremacy behind. Which is, you know, almost two decades later so like, keep that in mind for how long it took him.

Draco is a complex and very interesting character, and it just annoys me how Drarry and Dramione denigrate his redemption to “this person was hot and I didn’t want to oppress them”. Draco, I would argue, is much more interesting when he’s not shipped with anyone, or when he’s only shipped way after he’s started improving.

Just my thoughts, Drarry and Dramione do also ruin Harry and Hermione (and Ron, Ginny and Astoria), but the way Draco’s character is treated is just much more noticeable. It’s one of those cases of “if you have to change everything about the character to tolerate them, do you even actually like the character?” Also the why Astoria gets treated bothers me, but that’s for a different conversation.

At the core of this molecular cloud complex captured here is the reflection nebula IC 4592. Comprising fine dust, reflection nebulas typically appear dark but take on a blue hue when reflecting visible light from nearby energetic stars. In this scenario, the primary source of reflected light is a star located at the horse's eye, part of Nu Scorpii, a prominent star system in the Scorpius constellation. M80 (left) and the ρ Ophiuchi Cloud Complex // Dev (Dave) Prana

Interestingly, Messier failed to notice or write down the large star-forming region right next door to M80 on the sky: the ρ Ophiuchi Cloud Complex!

This is a huge star-forming region only 460 light years from Earth with reflection nebulae, emission nebulae, and dark dust clouds. Why Messier didn't feel like he needed to mention this is unknown to me!

2023 fic review!

ahhh thanks for tagging me, @citrusses and @oknowkiss! i'm going to tag @teledild0nix @elskanellis @arminaa8 @thecouchsofa @stationintern and anyone else who'd like to do this!!

my 2023 AO3 stats are...alarming lol. AO3 counts Close Behind as a 2023 fic because i finished posting it in 2023, but i really wrote it all in 2022. so if we discount that (which was 134k) i still wrote...over 330k words of fanfiction. 🆗🆒

do i have regrets? no. should i have regrets? maybe??? in any case, 2023 was the year i really started using tumblr for fandom again (thanks, elon!) and i made so many wonderful friends who were so supportive and inspiring! that word count is all your fault, basically.

Draco has to have a baby (or have one on the way) at the time of his fast-approaching 35th birthday, or he's going to lose his home to his vile cousin. Harry offers to help, but their complex past—even beyond Hogwarts—prompts Draco to set out on a long journey of friendship, kittens, gardens, motorbike rides, and more.

Harry finds out he's a Veela. That's not so bad, and then he finds out his allure only works on his enemies. The Chocolate Cosmos has earned its place on the list of rare flowers of the world as it has been extinct in the wild for years. The Chocolate Cosmos is a rich reddish-brown in colour and gives off a rich chocolate fragrance when it blooms, hence its name. This red flower is native to Mexico, however they no longer exist in the wild. It does not produce any seeds and needs to be grown with the help of tissue culture or root division. Technically, only clones of the original flower survive today.

victoire: fleur but maybe only by a margin (very close, bill should not take it personally that victoire just specifically admires fleur more because they are more similar in character, she really loves her dad)

dom: bill because he let her get tattoos before she was 18 and he will brush her hair in the morning when she’s too tired to do it herself

louis: fleur because their mother would never allow louis to leave the house looking ugly and they really appreciate that

molly: percy, because they are similar in person and when he gives her approval it just makes her feel more satisfied yknow

lucy: audrey because her mother lets her get away with more stuff than her dad does, so she feels more comfortable being goofy with her than her dad

fred: george because his love language is irritating people and george will just give the same energy back without any qualms

roxanne: angelina, she feels they have a greater understanding between them and she goes to her mother for advice more often

james: ginny, he is the definition of a momma’s boy who would always go soft on her

albus: ginny, even though he feels he’s more similar to harry, sometimes ginny just saying shit as it is gives him a rare sort of calm he appreciates

scorpius: even though he would rather keel over than ever think of liking one parent more than the other… he was closer with astoria growing up (due to their likeness she could bond with him easier), but obviously as scorpius grows up he gets closer with his dad, and he’ll have more experiences with him than he ever had with his mother.

lysander: rolf because he takes lysander all over the world to pursue his interests in geology. rolf will be trying to tame some swedish serpent whilst lysander is inspecting the pebbles in its cave and thats a normal father-son bonding time for them

lorcan: luna. lorcan has been illustrating for the quibbler since he was 13 because luna genuinely doesnt believe there is any other artist that can perfectly mirror the complexity of peculiar fantastical creatures as her son (it’s literally a stick figure)

alice: neville. she’s a daddy’s girl who has her dad wrapped around her finger. i mean, he loves her so much that he forgives her for hating gardening

frank: hannah. she forces him to help her fold the laundry with her and he hates it, but he still loves her (forcing him to help her with her chores just so she can spend more time with him, i see you hannah)
