We did a lot of zero waste stuff today cooking Sunday dinner! We peeled carrots and the peelings/ends went into the stock bag except a few tops, those went into old oui jars with a little water to sprout for some fresh salad greens since it's winter, we rinsed our vegetables in bowls of water which we used to water house plants, saved the leftover broth from a roast for turning the leftovers into stew tomorrow as well as some in jars in the freezer for rice/noodles in the future. The real highlight was the potato skin chips! They take way longer than the recommended twenty minutes but we also peel with knives so there was a lot of potato left on the skins. They turned out delicious though! And reheatable, just toss in the oven at 425 for a few minutes, we did it for 7.

Recipe for these... salted pancakes????? Suitable for a main dish, probably some kind of bread, but I don't know???

> Flour (500g)

> Water (3 cups)

> Vegetable oil (preferably olive oil) (3 big spoons)

> spices (to your taste!)

Mix flour and water first, then oil, then spices.

Let sit for 1 hour 20 min at least in the fridge.

Oil a pan, then cook the pancakes.

Enjoy.

chuuya’s role in bsd is so funny to me. you’re watching this show and every 10 episodes or so this pretty guy drops in, and he’s the coolest most OP guy in the show so he can really only hang around for a few minutes before he makes any conflict obsolete. and he’s supposed to be part of the villains but he never really does anything that evil and is mostly helpful? he just appears and does something badass and fucks off again. and this is all already really weird but also every time he shows up it’s clear that he and one of the other main characters have like, definitely fucked, which adds a whole other layer of absurdism. and the best part is he accomplishes this in maybe 11 total minutes of screen time.

here’s why i head cannon steve as being a good cook.

he gets left at home alone a lot. to start with he lived off microwave meals or pizza, and he was fine with that. his parents left him more than enough money that he didn’t have to worry about it. 

but if you’ve ever been home alone with nothing to do but to flick through tv channels, you’ll know that there’s two options: daytime soap operas or competitive cooking shows (this masterchef).

and the cooking shows check a lot of boxes for steve. he’s competitive, he loves shouting at his tv because his fave contestant isn’t working quick enough, or his least favourite is struggling with a basic technique (”who doesn’t know how to fucking quenelle, diane?”). 

but more importantly he looooves the drama that goes with it all. that one contestant accidently took another contestants ice cream out of the freezer and now they don’t have enough time to make another one? steve looses his fucking mind. 

and steve watches these shows and thinks “it can’t possibly be as hard as they’re making it look, right?” and he has the money to give it a go. so he buys a load of ingredients and keeps ruining them until they resemble real food. 

he’s heartbroken that my kitchen rules only gets one season in the USA.

seeing a metaphor abt watcher oversaturation on my dash (the one by @bdoubleowo, it's a little bit too "poking the hornets nest" for me to put on my blog) made me realize something, which is. alright: so watcher oversaturation is like living in a small town where the biggest major food option is fast food.

it all starts when the mcdonalds moves in, right? and you don't think anything of it because hey, their fries are pretty decent. but then all the other chains move in and pretty soon all of the interesting food options are completely choked out. you want to have seafood? sorry, no can do, here's an arby's. you want indian food? haha no, but there's a wendy's and a burger king right next to each other. want a decent cup of coffee? sorry, starbucks is the literal only option. pretty soon, local stores are changing their menus so they can fit the demand; it's all burgers, fries, sandwiches, et cetera.

and it's not like all the places are bad! there's a shake shack that does pretty decent shakes. you've had way better fries since that mcdonald's moved in and you would genuinely recommend this one hole in the wall burger place until you die.

but goddamn, sometimes you just want thai food, and the owner of the first local mcdonalds used a scandal with some kitchen accident in the local thai place to get them completely shut down so they could build a second location there instead, and now the nearest thai place is like half an hour away so it's either drive there (and pass hundreds of fast food restaurants on the way) and hope their food is decent, or give up and settle for grocery mart sushi.

and like. it's fine. a lot of the places make good food. but you're getting kinda sick of burgers and french fries. even the good ones. all you want is a bowl of tom kha gai but hell, you'll settle for ramen that isn't from the grocery store at this point!

you get to the thai food restaurant. it was mislabeled on google maps. it's actually a diner, and they might have a surprisingly good chicken noodle soup, but what they really specialize in is burgers, fries, and shakes.
