i dont mean this in a hostile way at all, im just genuinely curious, but why is it a *bad* thing to (as that post puts it) have fandom brain? and only focus on shipping? i dont really understand why you should *have* to engage with a series a specific way /genuine question /light hearted you dont have to answer this at all, feel free to delete

It's not a bad thing, and you shouldn't have to engage with the canonical text of a piece of fiction if you don't want to.

It'd just be nice if there was like, a better way to separate the people who want to play ships with the characters without paying attention to the actual canon of the source material, and the people who want to ship characters and create fandom material that interacts and engages with the actual meaningful canon of the text.

It really sucks that the people who want to play paper-dolls with the images of characters have to see the stuff by people who want to seriously discuss the often ugly and unpleasant ideas that are in canon.

And it sucks the the people who want to seriously discuss and engage with the often ugly and unpleasant things in canon aren't able to separate out the stuff by the people who just want to play with paper dollies.

It sucks because it's hard to tell at a glance who is playing paper dolls, and who is trying to meaningfully engage with the text, and that very often leads to unfortunate infights and misunderstandings by people who are having two very different conversations.

I don't want to step on anybody's playtime or make people feel bad about playing imaginationland with characters from a series I like.

But I also don't want to be punished and hated on for actually interrogating the text of that series and the things that happen in it.

I feel the reason the Izuocha fandom has changed so much the past few years is because while the Spirited Away tribute Izuocha pic by Horikoshi IS really beautiful, I wonder if a lot of fans took it too literally and started to watch the series assuming Izuku and Ochaco’s relationship is supposed to have the same level of importance to BNHA that Chihiro and Haku did to Spirited and Away.  So it might be why so many fans felt so slighted when Horikoshi went for ShiggyAFO targeting Bakugou specifically to hurt Deku/spelling out Bakugou is Deku’s closest person.

(admittedly, I kinda have a feeling Horikoshi DID intentionally bait people into thinking Ochaco was Deku’s closest person post Villain Hunt to make the reveal more shocking to at least some viewers. Whether Hori is making the series too click-baity is for another time).

I recently saw your name bandied about on Tumblr by chaps who said you should "know better at your age than to ship MegaRav". It's the most blunt anti-shipping I've spotted. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Yes. I think they should fuck the hell off. Megatron and Ravage (and Soundwave; my actual OTP is RavWave*) are over four million years old in the IDW continuity. I thought the antis were all concerned about who ships the young characters--not that I don't think that's utter bullshit as well.

If there's an age issue at all, it must surely be that I'm too young to be having such wicked thoughts about my elders, not the other way round?

Shipping for me is a fun fanon activity. It’s not a competition to see who will get to kiss or get together in the source material. It’s not about asserting your dominance over other, lesser ships. And I think treating it as such makes for a nasty environment.

HOWEVER! I find it endlessly funny that certain SPN shippers who DID see their ship war as a competition felt like they lost to incest in the finale. Welp! You said it, not me! There's a reason we don't call it “Losecest”!
