Anyway, I find it really cute how protective Wallace is over Scott when it comes to Envy. He'd definitely want to rub it in her face if he ever ended up dating Scott in the future.

Every time with PPPPPP I keep thinking "am I reading too much into this" (-> probably -> who knows! -> no way to confirm now!). Today, I'm really impressed with how much the volume extras of volume 7 & 8 pack a punch despite them being really really simple. So I'm going to read (too much) into it again x_x

Volume 7 covers the end of the 4v4 piano battle, Chocho's death and its direct aftermath (ch 53 - 61).

After each chapter there's an extra page that's blank save for a stave with a single note like this, similar to the rings the sextuplets wear/wore:

(excuse the crappy phone quality, this twitter thread by @/ppppppupdates has the extras from all the volumes pulled from the digital versions which are much clearer. I've linked to a few of them here and there).

The first note is C (Do) and the note moves up the C major scale with each chapter. To me, this came off as "very ominous countdown". You reach the end of the chapter, turn a page and BAM, the note's crept up again. It took me out of it for a second while still building suspense and still maintaining the flow of the story. The last note is B (ti/shi). This happens after chapter 59, which is when Chocho dies. So the scale was counting down (ok, up) to Chocho's death, where the chapter ends on a "pi-----"/"beeeeep" sound effect.

I know the fact that the scale doesn't end on C probably has more to do with there only being 7 siblings + only 7 chapters preceding this moment, but I also like how the scale remains unfinished. Since the last note (B/ti) is the very unstable 7th degree in the scale my brain automatically wants the melody to resolve to C but it's cut short like Chocho's life is

(There are still two chapters in the volume after that but the extras are more like the previous volumes: Most of it is Sadame-centric, like the cover (little graphs depicting his ability, the acknowledgment page is a warped version of the electronics shop where Sadame and Meloli and the inside back cover is of Meloli and Sadame). Also, there's a conductor's baton for Furusu and the results of the popularity contest)

Volume 8 already immediately sucker punched me by having no one on this page. Then, in a break from the small drawings between chapters from previous volumes, each of those pages has a full-page portait of each sibling, starting with Reijiro, Mimin, Fanta (all smiling), then Sorachika, Don and Shikato and finally, after the final chapter-- a smiling Brilliant (?) Lucky dressed in the clothes he's wearing on the cover of volume 8.

The final extra pages are small items representing members of the Otogami family

Fanta + the three pairs of polyhedron earrings might refer to Sorachika, on an Shitako?

Sorachika (scarf), Shikato (apple) and Don (score)

Gakuon, though I think it also could be referring to Brilliant Lucky as he's also associated with the necklace and his portrait has him wearing it while Gakuon/Sorachika(?)'s hand reaches for it

Lastly, there's a melancholic acknowledgments page (a room almost completely empty except for a piano) and the back inside cover (depicting the end of a measure, quite a definitive "the end" imo)

Interestingly, none of the extras depict or refer to Mediocre Lucky (unless the final portrait is what would have been Lucky's final form after, idk, he and Brilliant Lucky accept each other). Maybe this is fitting because his only appearances in volume 8 are 1) passed out in the cemetery in chapter 64 and 2) in that rigid, almost caricature-like form in chapter 70 where he's banished to the darkness by Brilliant Lucky.

All in all I think these extras make the volume end on an even sadder note than chapter 70 did on its own. A lot of them just remind me of stuff that we won't get to see: A happy Brilliant Lucky never appears in the actual story-- the story ends with Brilliant Lucky lashing out in anger and rejecting Mediocre Lucky. And if that final portait is (Mediocre) Lucky himself, then it's also a version of Lucky that we never got to see-- Lucky didn't get this good ending. Even the personal items on the extra pages are split between "siblings Lucky has saved" and "siblings Lucky has not saved" (& Fanta): Arcs that we got vs. arcs that we never will get.

After re-reading the manga I think that things really started to pick up/improve after volume 4 and when they really start making headways in their relationship although there was that one moment and I can’t remember if it was volume 4 or 5 but where kurosawa randomly pushed adachi against the sink and I was like );£:£:? cause adachi said it made him uncomfortable😭 but overall I’m in Love with volumes 6-10 and I do think it’s 1100% worth continuing

oh god that scene i hate it so MUCH dont get me started?????? it was actually vol3 so before they even got together which makes it so much worse imo, and theres this one line which is like "plus im nice" (as a reason for why adachi should be focusing on him and not rokkaku) in the manga which. kurosawa ily but shut the fuck up genuinely.??? only letting it slide (barely. like its on the thinnest goddamn ice) bc he was drunk and didnt rlly say any of that shit out loud but good lord its still so weird why did that moment have to be like that eugh.....

peter is exhausted. he’s practically falling off his feet as he fumbles with his keys in the door. his steps are heavy coming into your shared apartment, a reflective sigh leaving his lips. he drops his backpack and throws his keys on the counter, padding through the apartment in search of you.

he wants nothing more than to crawl into the arms of the one he loves most after the day he’s had. when you’re holding him, everything is okay.

he’s okay.

peter finds you on the couch. you’re sleeping, face smushed against its arm and a textbook open in front of you. you must have fallen asleep while studying; it wouldn’t be the first time. you look so warm and snuggly wearing his old i survived my trip to nyc shirt and a pair of knee-high socks. he can’t wait to cuddle up to you, forget about his day.

peter moves your textbook and steps out of his sneakers. he gets onto the couch, inching his way towards you from the other side. he lays his head in your lap, arms winding around your upper thighs. your eyes slowly blink open. it takes you a moment to realize that you’d fallen asleep, and that peter is here. you look down at your boyfriend to be met with a frown etched onto his lips, puppy eyes gazing up at you.

“you’re home.”

you weave your fingers into peter’s fluffy curls. peter gives a small nod in response. something is bothering him, you can tell.

“you wanna talk about it?”

peter finally lets it all out.

“my schedule sucks. class ends so late, and i can’t switch because the others are full and i need it. i know it’s just a couple times a week, but i hate it. i barely see you all day.”

you stroke peter’s curls soothingly while he rants.

“the subway was running late, so i didn’t get to work on time and jameson was pissed. i was pretty sure he didn’t like me before, but he definitely doesn’t now. i have to photograph some event this weekend to make up for it. i should’ve just swung there.”

“you think?”

“i dunno, i guess that would defeat the whole purpose. if spider-man shows up and i’m not there to take pictures, it might give away my identity. maybe i should just start working freelance.”

peter rests his chin on your stomach, fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns on your thighs.

“may called. said she wants us to come over for dinner. god, i don’t even have time for a dinner. i don’t have time to eat. i just…”

he trails off. you card your fingers through his locks, waiting for him to continue.

“sorry to put this all on you. and sorry i woke you up. i’ve just had a really long day, and things kinda suck right now, and i missed you.”

the music in rwby

i feel like i could talk about rwby's ost for HOURS. not even like, how the lyrics represent a character and/or their situation (thats a whole other post) but how everyone composing them NEVER MISSES!! every song is just absolute banger after banger ranging from full on songs with vocals by casey lee williams to just scores that are used on the episodes of every volume (that you can just listen to!! and i think that rules.) every song in every volume hits the soft spot in my brain that makes me smile (bmblb from vol4), makes me cry (forever fall from vol6) and gets super fuckin hyped n pumped up (die from vol2, especially the part with casey just full on screaming the lyrics) and to be honest theres a lot of songs in the albums that fit those 3 criterias but those are the ones i could remember as of late i also love how much the casey has evolved as a singer (i've heard that she's been singing for RvB since she was like,6) from vol1 where she was, i think, 12 and her voice was plenty AWESOME to listen to already, then came vol8 and shit went DOWN. the opening kicking off with "we said GOOODBYYEEE" goes so goddamn hard its unreal. every opening in this series goes incredibly CRAZY and its not even funny like every second of the songs in the series are so damn well composed with the catchiest beats and best lyrics ever (specifically lamar hall, he raps so damn fast in big metal shoe, vol6) by the way, jeff HOWLING in some songs he is wonderful, like caffeine (vol2) or the vol3 opening. hell, songs where its just him doing the vocals are incredible too even if there arent that many, like bad luck charm in vol4 orr not fall in love with you in vol3! ill be honest, i dunno who composed what and who did this n that but im ASSUMING most of the guitar parts were just jeff, like the swell and heavy guitar in touch the sky, vol7, that ones gives me summer (not the character) vibes and it slaps. i love the solos sprinkled around the songs as well and im glad to see them still present and incredible as always in the vol9. (RED LIKE ROSES PART 3!! absolute PEAK. i listened to it for like 3 seconds on borrowed earbuds and it felt like heaven on my ears) the whole of volume 9 was incredible too, checkmate is incredible with the flow of the lyrics and the doots and the BASS, oh my god the bass. its really cool knowing martin de lima, from ok goodnight (the band casey sings in!! check them out, i need to listen to more of their songs aswell, awake sounds HEAVY and im all for it) composed some of the scores for vol9 and i hope there'll be more of ok goodnight in future volumes (greenlight vol10) didnt expect to have written so damn much but thats ok. what im saying is : music goes hard, goes cool and makes me happy. hope it makes you happy too :)

Quick recap of my thoughts to Vol6 as I'm catching up with the bookclub!

Chapter 1:

The chapter where Marlon is repairing/preparing a new gun for Vash. What's there to say...big dislike for the Sheriff for punching Vash in the gut completely unasked for. Also big satisfaction at the end where the Sheriff gets to see just HOW good of a gunsman Vash is. Another sweet part is Vash using a shot of the Punisher and how Wolfwood is angry about it at the end! If also read some pretty cool analysis about the part where Meryl asks herself if Vash is even able to still fire a gun after all that happened...I have nothing to add! You all are putting these thoughts and conversations apart and analysing them in a way that I would never think of, I'm gaining so much more insight with the commentary by all the other readers!

Chapter 2:

OOOH it's that chapter

Sweet Vash is smiling at him and he looks utterly terrified and shocked. And with the hole in the moon behind Vash, as other posts have already pointed out...All in all such a great chapter, with the dream of Wolfwood before, his memories of meeting Knives and then this...about this scene everything has already been said as well! Theres's only a little smth I'd like to add to this iconic panel:

We all agree Vash was 100% aware of Wolfwood pointing the gun at him. Question is, what does he think of it? I think some people said he knew Wolfwood wouldn't go through with it. In my opinion, the way he looks so completely tired and worn out....I like to think he was being resigned. If it were an enemy or any other person of course he'd defend himself, but if it's Wolfwood? I'm not so sure Vash would have tried to avoid the hit. If his best friend thinks he needs to be eliminated for the greater good, I think Vash would accepted it and thought it right. It's after all what he thinks anyway, that it's maybe better if he weren't here on this world. Obviously Vash doesn't hold it against Wolfwood. Maybe the fact that he had his gun out but didn't shoot Vash made Wolfwood even dearer to Vash, gaining him more trust and friendship points? Well, much to think about with these two, as always!

An awesome page is an awesome page and must be addid to this post, even if only so I can more quickly find neat references when I'm looking through my bookclub folders later!

Oh and also this fight! I read another post that explained what I didn't get the first 2 times reading: While fighting they notice that their respective enemies are not suited for their weapons so they change in the blink of an eye! Which is! So cool and says SO much about how they instinctively know each other and their thoughs and fighting so well!! Which also neatly goes back to the gun pointing scene and you know, trust blah blah aaah I love these two.

Chapter 3:

Reading the Overhaul translation for the first time, I think the sass of Elendira gets through much more better, I have such a better feeling for her character here! Also, Legato hanging in that thingie is super funny. That guy is so nuts and I love him and hate him, because he's such a cool but dislikable character!

Theeeen at the end of the chapter, finally....LIVIOOOOO!! Come here big man. Let me give you a pat on the cheek. The cheek without the skull.

Chapter 4:

Oh yes we see more of Knives! I totally love Knives as a character and I like to see scenes of him...here we get some nice infos about plants. The hair thing. Oh yeah. On my first read I rushed through everything so quickly so I can't really remember my reactions to all the cool scenes and revelations, but that end of the chapter must have been a definite "OH D: " moment. Also, what a cool idea in general, the degrading showing in the hair!

Chapter 5:

oh god it's THAT chapter. (I say to every chapter, because every chapter starts to hurt after vol5) In the church. Here, as well, I have no analysis to further add...just that the emotions displayed here...are so well done. I think in this chapter it really shows just how deep Nightow's characters are, because we are directly being shown and said that characters, even when drawn wearing smiles, laughing, can be hurting SO SO much deep down. Which makes us question just how much masks of Vash we have seen throughout the series until now? And I like that, I like that characters are not only what they seem and how they appear, and I also like it when we DON'T always get to hear the characters thoughts but can only guess what they must be thinking in some situations. It's just what makes this manga stand out so much to me compared to other series. (Because here we have no doubt that the character has a life beside the story which we cannot see, and although there are of course many other series which do this great as well, but often I miss this and don't get this feeling. )

ALSO HOW DARE THEY THROW STONES AT MY BOY. AFTER EVERYTHING HE HAS BEEN THROUGH ALREADY. He's trying to save you all! D:>

Chapter 6:

And Flashback start! The Flashback arc is also amazing, and it's still so cruel how cute Knives was as a child. But more of that in the next recap!

Im going to be honest with you - im kinda Yang fan. Like, sure i love Ruby, Weiss and Blake too in one way and another, but Yang is special case for me, no matter how she end up written in the show.

She one of those characters, who just go into “you love her because she literally your favorite type of characters” - light hair buff girl, who dont scare to be extra fem, but also can fucking kill you. Party girl who also your old sister, who always with you and ready to help you when you lost. She have her own issues, but she trying her best to be better. Ever after she falling, she will rest and get back more stronger.

And everything that i told you is kinda true...but mostly on paper or in my headcanons. Or honestly its now headcanons for a lot of fans from this fandom.

Like yeah, she IS your blond dangerous girl, but she never was “the muscular one”. She strong, sure, but you lie to yourself that “oh we dont see her muscle because of budget/program restriction (to hard to model buff girl)/a closed clothes”. Baby i WISH Yang was build like a brick wall, i wish she was build at least like LeanBeefPatty, but this is not true. I absolutely love the idea of her being buff lady

She for a long times in not “party girl”. She maybe was, but we never saw or know her friends outside of characters that we know and she meat in Beacon. She even got new characteristic “the scary one” that in this series im not sure how work or how this blondy is looks “scary” outside of her anger issues (but im more about her look).

And im not sure how good she is as a sister. I dont have problem with her in first volumes, like her deciding the best decision to make Ruby find new friends is just run away (its not the best one options to do to just drop her right there, when you only got there and this is new fucking place and its better to stick together at least for a little bit, but knowing Yang - its fine, im fine with this. Plus later she WAS helping her to start conversation with Blake. Still in “Yang way” but helping.) but with each volumes its harder and harder to remember that they are a sisters. I dont ask to them stick together forever because “ouhhhhh they sisters and sisters is always together forever!” but even with moments that we have its hard to remember that they sisters at all. Ther is some moments there and there when she is acting like her sister (Vol5 when even meating Raven and be able to ask why she just...run away, the first thing she was trying to ask is for finding Ruby and have soft reunion. Vol7, when Salem did “your mom” moment. Vol8 short hug and this whole scene on the stairs). But there is a problem - around after vol5 there is a scenes that you can count with your two hands. There is more scenes about Blake that about Ruby. Hell i cannot remember any sisters interaction in vol6 at all outside of when Ruby look at Yang happily on the ship...and even then this scene was about Yang/Blake, not about Ruby be happy that Yang is alright. And its purposefully got worst in vol9 that didnt have proper ending.

We been told that Yang is kinda sister, who always too much with Ruby, but its never was there in the show. We been told that Yang was sister, who was have to be parent figure for Ruby because they dad was too deep into depression to be there, but you will never see anything that will make you go “yeah she totally act like someone, who know pretty well her young sister because of this”. And AGAIN vol9 did not make this situation better because she didnt saw any signals that Ruby is not okay or didnt was trying to talk with Ruby. There was “hey, you okay?” but there continue.

She have issues and she even know what issues, but its never was a thing that later involve into something more. She got okay with her arm pretty fast and dont have any problem anymore. Adam is dead so its magically heal her PTSD or any problem after loosing her arm. Her anger problem transform from her talking with Tai and trying to listen him for a couple volumes (this is why we didnt saw her fully using her powers until the end of vol6) back into a joke and its not making her relationship with Blake, who was dating with person who was “Walking angry boyfriend”, looks pretty great. Its there, but its not the topic for talk between person, who “pretty fresh” from abuse relationship. 

Her abandonment issues? Exist on paper. Its sound like a cool idea, especially knowing that not only Raver run away from her, but she lost Summer AND Tai was not there, when she need him the most when she was small. And then after vol3 Ruby run away from her AND Blake after Adam situation, without explaining anything. This issues is dont trigger almost at all, even in the most painful moments (vol9, AGAIN). We will just hug Jaune and will remember about Ruby only after we will see her tree statue. Hell its never was even a thing to talk about it with Blake! You cant just start a conflict and then abruptly end with “we protect each other”. I dont want to see “trauma porn”, i just want to see something that will make me believe that characters IS having some struggles and make me believe that yes, they work really hard to deal with all of this and make moments when they win much stronger. Hell even stuff like “omg love heal them :)” that not the most healthiest moral in the world and kinda a little bit harmful cliche, but there is nothing even that. They just...speedrun they trauma or stay up skit it.

Honestly, a lot of people already point out that Blake character was nerfed and transform into “just shy cat-girlfriend” but the same i can say for Yang. She never was “the favorite one” in term of writing (even in term of her design even in her first outfit you can see the differences between her and RWB. She maybe was Monty favorite in term of “having punch character” to animate, but im not sure she was the most important one, when writers was imagining her in the show.) but even with what small stuff we got with her at all she manage to get worst. She now just blond girlfriend, who ready to punch anyone for her shy girlfriend (that cute concept, if both of the girls was not made into this and was made like this from the start) and act kinda “masculine” enough to make some of people go “yes she the man in this relationship”. (even know...this is not how this work.). She had a problems before in term of her character or how she work in this series, but this is not getting better at all.

I can go forever about her but i need to stop. She just cool looking blond girl with popular (in fandom) and active VA. And for me personally its sad, because she has inspired me so much that she influenced several of my characters. I know, almost every character in this show is “full of potentials, that got fuck up” but she is special case for me.

If they're gonna sink one ship at the expense of the other at least have the balls to show the angst and residual feelings that go with it. Sun should have emotions ranging from: confusion, disappointment, and regret. Followed shortly by acceptance and congratulations for Blake and Yang. Blake for her part should feel some guilt for leaving Sun like that but after some awkward interaction they stay friends and move on. In other words some good writing is needed from RT so we're shit out of luck.

In your opinion what do you think the best and worst fight in volume 9 was?

Okay so, volume 9 was... definitely a strange one in terms of the way the fights were done. But just for a quick TL:DR:

Best fight, on a technical level: Ruby's lil scythe moment against the Furious Cat. Everyone's been wanting Ruby to use her scythe in an effective manner, we've known they can do it because we've seen Qrow's fights in vol6/7, and they finally let their actual lead character actually use her scythe for the first time since the Red Trailer.

Worst fight: all the rest of the fight against the Furious Cat/NeoCat. It sucked ass. Every bit of it. Bad choreo, bad writing, bad characters, completely undercuts the set-up, just bad.

My personal favourite: Ruby vs the Jabberwalker in episode 7 (not the rest of the fight with WBYJ just Ruby's moment). I liked how it basically foreshadowed Ruby's imminent breakdown and the toll the Ever After was taking on her. Was it subtle? As a speeding train, but. It was decent.

Overall, 99% of the fights in this volume were gif bait spectacle fights instead of anything plot relevant. But that just seems to be the way rwby's wheels are turning now, most of of the vol8 fights are the same, bare minimum of set-up (or actively contradicting earlier set-up), no real pay off, just Cool Moves for people to share screenshots of. And that's not bad, necessarily, but it also could be better.

i’m on vacation and i have a lot of free time and nothing excites me more these days than those two damn boys so i tried to do a thing last night: put their songs that i think that are related to their relationship in a order like songs that capture the euphoria and passion of the first everything, first kiss first love etc etc ‘i could do everything for you’ kind of thing (kill my mind, late night talking, adore you) & then the first issues, when you still love someone so so so much and he’s everything and you can’t live without but the issue exists and it’s there (golden), and it’s followed by a mix of the lack of communication, pride, fear, isolation by one (for all the losses) and the desperation and overthinking by another and the general pressure put on both (i picked satellite, two ghosts, meet me in the hallway) and, as you said here, "history about how we were apart for a bit, got fucked up, then realized we can't be apart for very long, as we always should've known really but i guess we're stupid, but anygays now we're happily at home, together" song (and i prefer to interpret this way too despite being hard to know) (headline, from the dining table, miss you, always you, walls, as it was) and then, finally, the kitchen conversation, where they want to be able to listen to each other and be vulnerable and have a mature conversation where they reaffirm how crazy they are for each other and want their relationship to work out (too young, defenceless, habit, lucky again, face the music) and then there’s it, they are firmly together, they’re each other home and it’s all worth it because together they’re better (sweet creature, all this time, we made it, the greatest) and the next and last leg of tracks it’s basically their domestic life, facing the issues being together, tasting the longing, joys, always inspiring each other and ready to give up everything for the loved one (daydreaming, canyon moon, daylight, little freak, written all over your face, sunflower vol6, love of my life, keep driving & grapejuice). i decided to share with you because i LIVE for your analysis and i always want to discourse about their lyrics and love❤️❤️❤️ and i know that’s nothing is linear and racional but putting in a order was fun and my messy brain says thank you !!

i love this <333 bc like you said at the end, it's just fun to find a storyline in it, and then i also love to scramble it all up. bc then when you have this and you start all over again it still makes sense. even years down the line there will be the same stupid little issues that were there at the start. or if you take this line and start zigzagging yk?? there's so much depth in their music and one of the true joys of going through the eras with them - basically growing up with them - is seeing how they handle their problems differently... or always the same way lol. sometimes a bitch never changes. in any case, it's been so wonderful to have them there while experiencing the same things, or to hear their perspective on love after knowing it deeply for so many years. and also to see their very human side and hear their pettiness or stubbornness, same as when they were 16 and 18. life is beautifully messy like that

I have a little thought. Back in chapter 2 of the manga, Hanako mentioned having a friend in his past. It's most likely to be Tsukasa.

He said that to Nene at the rooftop of the school.

He met Tsukasa again on the same rooftop.

Maybe the location was specifically chosen by AidaIro? Maybe back in time, the two used to sit there together?

It's said in many animes I've watched before that people do sit on a rooftop or in high places in general if they wanted to have privacy and to be far from other people.

It can be a thing for the twins? Like, the two want to have a quiet time, alone, on the school rooftop, and enjoy their lunch time or after school time in peace. Maybe...?

yep! I've sussed this out too-- I think the rooftop is a key location for Amane & Tsukasa, and some day we're going to see a crucial memory there. Honestly, I'm certain of it!!

Amane indeed says his 'natsukashii' line to Nene on the roof, and it almost certainly is referring to Tsukasa, as Amane had no friends. [vol1]

Amane goes to the roof to gaze into the moon after confronting Nene's lifespan in clockkeepers. It's where he goes to be solemn & contemplative [vol6]

Tsukasa chooses the roof as his location to meet Amane for the first time since their death. There must be a meaning to that decision-- it's such a special moment for them. [vol4]

In Picture Perfect, the roof is a crucial scene, with Nene beseeching Amane to run away with her [vol10]

In general the rooftop scene in PP feels loaded…. Amane feels haunted, or like he's having deja vu? To me, his response to Nene is as if he's seeing a ghost. I can't quite explain it merely as shock that she wants to leave, he seems so scared suddenly. He outright flinches and rips from her…..

Maybe something like that happened with Tsukasa?

What happened to Ruby in your reference sheet by being sliced in half for your Scorruby AU?! The scar and everything!

Okay so Ruby has a bad time in the au. But I can explain. So, the whole being 'sliced in half' thing, that was more of an idea I had about how Ruby's semblance works in this AU.

So I'm putting the image you were talking about under the readmore at the bottom of the post because it's potentially gore although nothing visceral is visible but better safe than sorry, and I'm gonna stress something off the bat: Ruby's not actually hurt and this isn't actually a literal thing. (Yet. Probably. Maybe. We'll see.)

The idea for the discussed sketch was as a way to play around with posing, expression, and what Ruby's Scatter might look like/how it might work, more metaphorical then as something that actually happens (so far).

Scatter, in my AU, is a Transformative semblance, in that it physically alters Ruby by turning her into a swarm of swirling rose petals. My idea was that this semblance starts from the inside out, which is why she was able to be hit in the first place, because she was already disassembling herself into her petal form. So she's actually completely unharmed, she just happened to be up against someone who was fast enough to catch her mid-scatter, mostly for visual flair.

I'm not a fan of the current canon semblance, I think there's too much going on and they've forgotten good ideas for plot relevance. So lets look at some quotes as the show's gone:

Volume 1: Pyrrha says 'Ruby has her speed'

Volume 4: Qrow says 'some people burst into rose petals'

In the vol6 hiatus coming up on vol7 the comics called it 'an ice cream sundae of speed with a little cherry of teleportation on top.'

Volume 7: Harriet said "I've seen other speed semblances before. That's different. I think there's more going on than you think."

volume 8: Penny explains 'Ruby is capable of traveling at an extreme velocity from one point to another by breaking herself down to her molecular components, thus negating her mass and then reassembling them at the destination.'

Basically, Ruby's semblance has, over the course of show, had these points:

short range dash that generated rose petals

able to turn herself into a swirl of rose petals that retained mass and had greater mobility

generated a slipstream if she hit a certain speed (seen in the vol2 food fight and the petal tornado she made in the vol4 character short)

was able to pick other people up, although their weight still mattered (Penny in vol2)

was able to use it for mid-air combat in short bursts, but it was finite and didn't have long distance

could somewhat manipulate the rose petals, able to separate her main mass into smaller masses for evading obstacles

after vol6, it turned into 'a bit of teleportation', and then 'no more mass', allowing Ruby to carry limitless people and go just about anywhere as long as she needs

And personally, I'm not a huge fan of this. I think that they could have handled it better instead of contradicting themselves. They also effectively took out Ruby's three biggest weaknesses: that she has to worry about the weight of people she carries, that she's still solid (just split up over a large swarm), and that distances are a factor. And it makes it less interesting to me.

Honestly Ruby's semblance was just treated weird in general, having it be like her splitting apart into separate parts mid-scatter was special in vol7 when she was doing it back in vol4 felt off. I have no problems with her upgrading her distance on it, I thought that was interesting, but then the teleportation made it weird. We lost the slipstream move she used, which was a complete shame because it was a cool way for Ruby to turn her evasive semblance into offence. And 'mass no longer mattering' was pure 'we wrote ourselves into a corner here's a bullshit 'oh you could do this all along' power upgrade' (coughs at Penny being heavy in vol2 and Mercury kicking her in vol3). Also just the name. Petal Burst. I don't like it, should have kept it as Scatter.

So, ScorpRuby. Her semblance is Scatter. It is a transformative semblance where she breaks herself apart into a swirl of rose petals for a speed/mobility boost that can go in any direction, but is short range with limited distance (though she does learn to hold it for longer, making it about endurance training). She can carry people, but their weight does matter, and more people are harder to carry. It is not teleportation, and she can still be hit, or grabbed, or knocked out of her scatter if she's not careful, because mass still matters (which means she still creates a slipstream she can use). And her petals pick up the colours of people she picks up, because we lost that visual.

I think I got off topic, but the point stands, I'm keeping more defined limits on Ruby's semblance, because then it makes the story about finding ways around those limits.

And as for the scars... (warning, getting into some real criticism of the show here that I'll put under a read more if you're not interested in that)

I saw Nora get scars in vol8 that managed to avoid the face because god forbid girls that aren't villains have visible facial scarring. There is a lot of lookism in the show about big scars being Evil and I'm not here for it. Weiss's scar is small and becomes less visible every volume, Blake's scar is also small and easily hidden, Winter could have had a scar on her nose but they were cowards and removed it, and Nora has lots of scars now but they barely touch her face, even though there would have been nothing wrong with that (and they're also quite neat and not visually unappealing and can be mostly hidden under her outfit).

Meanwhile the villains with scars (Ironwood, Tyrian, Adam, Cinder), have big and jagged scars that are very prevalent (when Ironwood's top is off, at least) and in the case of Adam and Cinder take up a lot of their face. It's like a visual shorthand, Adam and Cinder's scars are even given Big Reveals to shock the audience with how 'ugly' and 'deformed' their scars are (a missing eye and an SDC brand).

I think that scars, whether it's having them, or the visibility, placement and size of them, shouldn't be a signifier of if a character is a Good Guy, or not. So I gave Ruby some, because she is the main character of this AU, she is the hero, and she's allowed to have large scars that aren't easily looked over, and the fight where she gets them is both plot-relevant, and for character development. And I think that she still looks cute as hell with them, personally.

Also, yes, Ruby does go through the absolute wringer in this AU, but hey, it's for character development. I swear. (also image here)

you and peter are at a bonfire at the beach with friends. you sit facing each other in the sand, a lit joint between your fingers. you’re sharing it with peter, and you’ve already taken a few drags off of it. it’s his turn.

“don’t make me get high alone.”

you offer your boyfriend the joint, lips curling into a smirk.

“don’t be a pussy.”

“don’t use pussy like that. it’s sexist, and misogynistic, and- never mind, you don’t need a lecture on misogyny from me. gimme that.”

you grin and pass him the joint. he brings it to his lips and inhales, holding the smoke in his mouth for an impressive amount of time before blowing it out. he repeats the process once more, then gives the joint back to you.

“happy?”

“very.”

you take a final hit for good measure. you jam the joint into the sand to put it out and grab peter’s hand.

“let’s dance.”

you lead him to the fire, where some of your friends are gathered. music is playing, and a couple people sway to it. the two of you join in.

after a while of dancing together, your highs kick in. you stand on peter’s feet and hold his hands for support. you’re barefoot, and he’s in a pair of beat up sneakers. he walks around the beach with you balancing on his feet. you cackle amongst yourselves, occasionally bumping into friends, which makes you laugh even harder.

peter starts walking backwards and trips, sending you both tumbling into the sand. he breaks your fall. you both look at each other and burst into laughter.

“oopsies. i stepped on a rock.”

“nice going, penis parker.”

you sit up and straddle peter’s waist. peter giggles, hands coming to your hips.

“is it just me or can you, like, not feel anything? when i’m high, i literally feel nothing.”

“sounds nice.”

“it is nice. i love being high.”

“i love you being high. it’s the only time you aren’t all uptight and shit.”

“hey.”

peter pokes at your hips with a pout.

peter pushes your dress up, bunching it at your thighs. he squints up at you, a dopey smile spreading across his features. the light from the fire illuminates you in the darkness. he just stares at you for a moment, fingers dipping under your dress to draw patterns on your skin.

you giggle in response. you listen to the waves crashing into each other and onto the shore, let the cool breeze wash over you. your hands cup either of peter’s cheeks. you make your way up his body so your faces are in line.

“tell me if you feel this.”

your lips catch peter’s. he parts his lips as he kisses back, guiding your body flush against his. he whines when your teeth tug on his bottom lip, head tilting up to deepen the kiss.
