Digital Transcendentalism

The 19th century gave way to a rapidly industrializing world in which individuals were swiftly being alienated from all forms of wholeness, be it extended family, the farm-to-table process, or the construction of tools, art and goods. The American west was “closing up” like a festering wound with parasites picking at every last ounce of exposed flesh left. Factories were booming, family units were shrinking and the sources of food were becoming evermore obfuscated.

The nauseating churn of modernity and disorienting sensation of only knowing fragments of any and everything was set against the backdrop of a world choked by coal smoke and diabolically efficient cruelty. 

Transcendentalism was a direct response to these rapid shifts. It founders and practitioners sought to reconnect with the divine by emersion in, and appreciation for, nature. It was, in many ways a rejection of modernity, the capitalistic rat race, and its associated philosophies.  

Many transcendentalists fought to preserve the natural beauty of the world that industrial barons were set on pillaging in their rapacious quests to conquer and capitalize on all frontiers.

Now, some 150+ years later, there are no more frontiers to conquer. Space is a sea too vast to cross in our short lifetimes and the depths of the seas that line our shores offer no refuge for our fragile lungs. So now, as many have pointed out, the conquest has turned inward, to the mind. 

Social media has come to monopolize many of our lives, mapping our inner thoughts through data mining and enslaving our attention.

It feels as though many young people, especially those along the border of millennial and Get-Z who still have memories of a world before Facebook, are at a saturation point. 

The platforms we grew up on are closing up just like the American west. The possibilities feel constricted, the sense of community seems disjointed and shot through with aggressive marketing. People want respite from the suffocating borders and exploitation that come with “progress”

I wonder if we’ll see the birth of a sort of digital transcendentalism. A movement that mirrors its predecessors desire to reconnect with the Devine feeling that comes from removing the bindings and blinders. 

The feeling that comes from knowing you are a part of a whole.

Fucking rant

I fucking hate social media

Especially tiktok/instagram anything that functions like that

Because of how fat bodies are presented and treated

Either its about "how many sizes you can go down"

Or its glamorizing fat bodies(im not say fat bodies aren't good to see, or shouldn't be normalized, they definitely are normal and i love seeing bodies like mine)

But it turns into this

"How can i change my appearance to justify my existence and make people like me"

Its "how can i change the way i dress to better suit my figure or hide my body type"

Or "how can i dress my body up"

And once again im not saying what you think i am, i love seeing people be confident in there bodies, i love seeing the outfits and the fits.

But this is social media we are talking about, so there is a certain, "im gonna hide this part i dont like" or this " i just watched this tiktok of someone my size getting ready in this amazing outfit, and i feel this sudden need like i need to dress that way"

If that makes any sense, im sick and have been up several hours and in pain so its not gonna be clear

But my point is, i want to be in my body without having to worry about what it looks like constantly or feel as though somehow im missing something, but social media and looks are such a big part of todays world there is no escaping it and its so tiring.

I just want to see fat bodies be and exist without the pressure of presenting them a certain way to be more likeable.

While one could argue that all of the squad being orphans is a convenient excuse so that no one has siblings or parents (or children) interfering with the plot, in universe it's both heartbreaking and heartwarming. This band of monster hunters really are a found family. They truly only have each other. Even Lucy was an orphan when she died. No wonder they're all so close and warm with each other. T_T

Do you know what I hate about current social media, especially YouTube, TikTok, and FB and IG to an extent? Everyone has to censor words related to serious topics. Like you can’t say words like sex, abuse, minor, suicide, death, murder, and a whole big list of normal words that aren’t swears but are deemed too controversial. If people say these words the content gets suppressed or hidden from people. This is so fucked up. I’m an adult, if I want to watch a video about a serious topic then let me. I understand survivors can be triggered but that is NOT why they are suppressing serious topics. They just don’t want to put ads on videos that are of controversial topic. Some of these serious topic videos need to be seen by more people, like when they are exposing a predator in a kids game, talking about how they overcame addiction, talking about how they overcame suicidal thoughts, exposing a religious organization for sexual abuse, and so many more. The examples I just listed are all REAL examples of videos I’ve seen suppressed by YouTube. I know it all boils down to not wanting ads on controversial videos. They want the world to be sunshine and rainbows while victims stay silent. It makes me sick and I seriously miss the old days of YT where you could talk about pretty much anything.
