Lost in Consumption by Johnny & The Yee Men (single - 1980)

In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, there are a fascination with Asian culture in post-Punk music. ‘Turning Japanese’ by The Vapors; ‘Japanese Boy’ by Aneka; ‘Hong Kong Garden’ by Souxsie & The Banshees. All songs toying with Far Eastern themes in their own way, some more crass or arguably racist than others, appropriating musical riffs from the region. It is ironic, then, that the only post-Punk song by someone from the British-Chinese community – and, indeed, a very early commentary on cultural appropriation - was banned by the BBC and disappeared into obscurity.

John Yee’s family hailed from Hong Kong and he lived in Manchester’s China Town, where his parents ran a supermarket catering to the community’s specialist culinary needs. A complete outlier at the time, he was the only British-Chinese person involved with the burgeoning Mancunian post-punk music scene, the Yee Men building a reputation for ferocious performances at the raucous Electric Circus venue.

This brought the band to the attention of Invented Records founder, Max Scratch, who swiftly signed them and released a single, ‘Lost in Consumption’. A furious diatribe against the way Britain ‘ate’ Johnny’s culture and reduced it to cliché, it was carried along by an ear-battering guitar riff and merciless drums.

The song famously included the couplet ‘You want another fucking spring roll? I’ll stick it up your fucking hole’. This brought it to the attention of the DJ, Dave Lee-Travis, who complained that he shouldn’t be verbally abused for, in his words, ‘enjoying a great meal from the local chinky’.

This led to the record being banned by the BBC and the single flopped, perhaps confirming Johnny’s assertions about the British public.

What happened to Johnny Yee afterwards is lost in the mists of rock myth-making, and probably the subject of another post in the near future...

Absolutely begging you to write the Hob/Dream cheeseburgers and vengeance story

Back when I was doing Spotify Wrapped Prompts (remember those???) I made a list of what I would do for each of them before answering the actual asks (ie following the assignment before proceeding to not follow it at all). I am banned (by myself) from continuing them until Seventies San Francisco AU is done, since it was a Spotify Wrapped prompt before it was a 20K+ WIP, from an anon who has brought a curse upon my house (affectionate). BUT one of them, to finally arrive at the point, was Romance Dawn by Radkey:

canon verse between meetings, hob is a union organizer, hob is in the punk scene, hob is setting fires or putting them out, hob is at shows, hob is getting in fights, and the fierceness of it all transmits to his feelings for his stranger, and then one day he sees him, thinks it’s a dream (is it a dream?), he kisses him, tastes blood, something is wrong, wakes with vague memories, goes running back and back again, until he gets it out of him, where are you, fawney rig. and it’s maybe a fishbowl destruction fic. and like. london punk/hardcore scene & thatcherism & trade union strikes. burning down fawney rig. sort of green room energy but holy war against the burgesses. smashing it. saving dream. not even i. we. we will salt the fucking earth here.

Anyways, I think the cheeseburgers and vengeance would fit in great with that and Hob and his punk family deserve that experience.

No listen hear me out

Wayne who visited during the hospital while Eddie was in a coma and overheard Steve and Robin talking about a girl and they see him and he knows how terrifying that can be so he casually comments about boys being hard to ask out and ends up talking to Steve and Robin about it while eddie is in a coma for let's say a month in which Steve has 2 things happen

1. He stays over with Wayne on the days they're both kicked out of Eddie's room because Wayne hates the silence and Steve hates being alone but the only way he leaves that room is if at least 2 people he trusts are in it and others are usually busy. It works out well

2. Steve finds out Wayne likes both and relizes oh maybe I do too and while he hasn't said anything to Wayne except ask some questions abut Wayne has his suspicions

Then eddie wakes up and manages to get out of the hospital

Steve ends up at the trailer more to help eddie and Wayne is glad to have him

And then he notices the pining between the two of them

And says something to eddie who makes a comment about falling for somone so known for liking women

And Wayne makes a comment about that not meaning he doesn't like men and eddie freezes and still is not willing to try

Que Wayne munson tired of their pining increasingly obviously asking Steve out for eddie with Robin and slowly, as they relize that Steve and eddie like each other, the party helping him set the two up to go out because God damn it they care about Steve and eddie and want them happy

Steve enters Eddie's hospital room after beeing strongarmed into stretching his legs and a toilet break. He comes back to Wayne sitting back in the chair next to Eddie's bed, a tape playing on a stereo Wayne brought in for Eddie. They sit in silence a while, watching over the boy they both have devoted parts of their heart to. Parts of their lives to. Steve is staring and he's tired and he just wants to see those brown eyes open, wants to hear some shitty remark come out of Eddie's mouth that will drive him wild and leave him laughing. He's lost in his thoughts for the millionth time when Wayne starts speaking

‘Y’know, I know my boy is a little out there. I know he gets into scrapes about it. But I wouldn’t change him. And I’d sure as hell never let anyone change him. He’s good for people. Never shied from people that are different’

Steve doesn’t really know where this is going but it’s the most Wayne has ever spoken to him so he keeps quiet, nodding along because of course he agrees.

‘You know he made this tape? He’s always making tapes. Knows what he’s doing with music. All these singers though? They got something in common. Some of them I didn’t even know about but Eddie? He did his research, just like he always does.’

It’s quiet as Wayne takes a sip of his coffee and casts his eyes over eddie and Steve, Steve feels watched but also seen in a way he’s not quite sure he understands

‘Yup, just left this out for me one day. Told me to give it a listen, that all these people are ‘just like you’. Turns out he was right, can’t say I like all the songs but he was right, that little shit.’

Wayne looks directly at Steve this time, pins him to his chair with the force of the stare

‘Those singers are singing for themselves son, they dare who they are and they love who they love. Ain’t nothing wrong with that, okay? Don’t forget that, god knows it took me long enough to figure it out’

Steve sits slightly mystified as Wayne stands, pops the tape out and hands it to Steve

‘Give it a listen and don’t fucking lose it, alright?’

Wayne walks out, presumably for another coffee and Steve turns the tape over in his hands. He’s not entirely certain but he thinks this might be something important

There's so much infighting between goths on what constitutes as real goth music, that some within the subculture will cry about how so and so band isn't really goth...even though said band is highly influential to the scene.

Seriously, I've seen people claim Alien Sex Fiend, Joy Division, The Cure, Souxsie, Virgin Prunes isn't real goth because they experiment with different genres. It's insane.
