Dick: someone save me pls
Jason: What's wrong?
Dick: Gala at Wayne Manor
Dick: This guy won't stop talking to me
Jason: lol sucks to suck
Damian: Sorry Richard, I cannot attend to the situation. That would give up my hiding spot.
Damian: I meant vantage point.
Damian: If any of you tell Bruce, I will murder you.
Cass: Damian, look up
*sends photo of Damian in the rafters of Wayne Manor*
Damian: Ah, great minds think alike I see.
Tim: hold up Dick, I wanna get out of this conversation too, I'll be over in a sec
Steph: Can't relate
Steph: This is why you don't let the first billionaire who offers adopt you
Steph: then you gotta go to the stuffy parties
Steph: Duke and I are the only smart ones
Duke: Agreed, have fun at the party
Later at the Gala
*Red Hood and the Outlaws come busting through the door*
Red Hood: This is a hostage situation
Red Hood: We want Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Cassandra Cain, and Damian Wayne.
Bruce, also desperately wanting to get out: Aren't you forgetting someone
Red Hood: Oh, right, Alfred Pennyworth
Bruce: aren't you forgetting someone else?
Red Hood: No
Bruce: Ja- Red Hood. Aren't you going to take me!
Red Hood: what would I need you for? I already have CEO of Wayne enterprises *ruffles Tim's hair, about to get fought by Tim* (under his breath: you fight back, I'm leaving you behind), a police officer, biological son of a billionaire, cool af dancer Cassandra Cain, and Alfred the Almighty
Bruce: don't you want a billionaire too?
Red Hood: If I take you, who is going to pay the ransom?
*Taking the Batkids and Alfred out of the gala as Bruce pouts*
Jason: one of you swipped Bruce's credit card before we left, right?
Tim: of course, we aren't amateurs
Jason: then ice cream on Bruce!

I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#Jason Todd#batfamily#it's just a fun quirk! it's a fun lil detail and I simply cannot slight ppl for enjoying and incorporating it into works#like obviously jason isn't the only one. I'm a big believer in the batfam having over lapping interests they refuse to bond over#i know dick canonically used the robin hood stories (which are pretty flowery in their language far as i can tell) as inspo for Robin#and i know babs was a librarian and even tho her area of nerddom is characterized as more computery she probably knows quite a lot-#-about literature as well#duke is a hobbyist writer i believe? i saw a fan mention that- which if so is great and I hope he's also a nerd#(i mean he is canonically. i remember him being a puzzle nerd in his introduction. but i mean specifically a lit nerd)#damian called Shakespeare boring but also took acting classes so i think he's more of a theatre kid.#Tim's a dropout and i don't think he's ever shown distinct interest in english lit and i can't remember for Steph?#I'm ngl my brain hyperfocused on musician Steph i forget some of her other interests I'm sorry (minus softball and gymnastics!)#and then Cass had her whole (non linear but it's whatevs) arc about literacy and learning to read#went from struggling to read in batgirl 00 to memorizing Shakespeare in 'tec and is now an avid read in batgirls!#she's shown reading edgar allen poe but we don't know if it's his short stories or his poems#point to all of the above being: i know Jason's not the only lit nerd in the batfam#but also i do need him to be writing poetry in his spare time and reading and reviewing it#jason at the next dead robins society meeting: evening folks today I'll be assigning all of us poems based on laika the space dog#damian and steph who have been kidnapped and brought to jasons warehouse to hangout: LET US GO BITCH#speaking of^ random poem i think jason would like: space dog by alan shapiro#wake up one morning in an unfamiliar more mature body with a profound sense of abandonment. the last four lines. mmm tasty

At this point, when watching a DC movie or tv show, my friend and I will play the game of “which Robin is it? Okay and which Robin are they saying it is?” Because the Tim Drake-ification of Dick & Damian is only rivaled by the occasional Jason Todd-ification of Tim. We rejoice when a Robin is actually acting like himself.

i saw an account post that, unfortunately, if you are a jason todd fan account then you’ve most definitely gotten an ask along the lines of “if you like fanon jason then you’ll definitely like canon helena/steph/mia” and was wondering if you’ve ever gotten an ask like that
I've gotten a few about Helena specifically, never Steph or Mia so I'm going to talk about Helena rather than generalize what I'm about to say to both of them too (because I was actually thinking about this a few weeks ago!)
Those people are right...in a way. If you want christian guilt (that Jason does not in UTRH and should not ever struggle with) and genuine efforts to be accepted by the Bats? You want Helena. A character whose relationship with killing can be benefited by people bringing her into their light without rendering her previous choices pointlessly antagonistic? that's Helena.
Then there's also the factor of Helena often, in canon, being treated as unstable and untrustworthy, no matter what she does to prove otherwise. and that's seen as a continued failing on her part, even if it's others that refuse to believe in her. Jason constantly being pushed into those situations in fanon and canon is very Helena coded. He's got her good and bad.
But if you like the Jason from UTRH era, arguably the best written Jason post-resurrection (which isn't saying much because...we all know how he's written most of the time), then Helena would never work for you because they're so different. Even with fanon, there's only a certain extent it can apply to. Helena's not Bruce daughter, he didn't raise her, she was never family for him outside the costume (or in it. but that hurts me to say), and she certainly wasn't Dick's sister. So those dynamics should be different inherently, even in fanon where they're altered to resemble something like what Helena has. There's still a history that Jason has here that she naturally doesn't.
I think it's too vague and unhelpful of a thing to say if you're trying to make people interested in Helena or change their portrayal of Jason. But I do see the basis of it.

If you were wondering, is my favourite character autistic? The answer is most likely: yes, of course.

me: yeah i kinda prefer fanon, is way funnier, more entertaining and less stressful.
me, when an actual comic book has the characters acting as fanon: wait. what are you doing. no. stop it. now.

judging by the way bruce was thinking about the robins (stephanie wasn’t worth his patience, jason is ‘the violent one’) i think they should have beat the shit out of him more, actually

If Bruce feels the Batfam needs a refresher on the rules or some of the kids are acting out, he makes them all sit in a room together and play a gimkit for it (for those who don't know what gimkit is, it's basically interactive Kahoot where you get little people you can customize and you get put in a game together, the common themes are snowball fight (competitive, you answer questions to get snowballs to throw at people and the person with the most kills at the end wins) and fishing (more independent, you answer questions for bait to then use for fishing to then get money from it and whoever has the most money at the end wins). The kids all love it and he found it is far more productive way of teaching them the rules instead of lectures cause they are all competitive so they all learn the rules to give them an advantage in the competition.

Stalling out on my Cass & Steph & Jason soulmate AU again, so instead I will talk about how funny it is to take Steph, who's stance on killing is at least 70% defined by the social network, and throwing Jason into that social network.
Like, Jason's whole story is in no small part about how he will not sacrifice his moral beliefs for his father, despite how acutely he wants that connection back. It is also, in no small part, about how much of his moral beliefs come out of his desire to make Bruce see the ways in which he failed him.
So who better for a foil than a girl who literally dies because she stays true to those moral beliefs even as it sends bullets into her. That philosophy objectively fails her! and yet. she still keeps to it. not out of any particular moral objection but because she trusts the people around her, and doesn't want to break their trust.
(The answer to who better as a foil is cass. but that's a whole separate post)
But that's in many ways a somewhat facile way to build a moral system, especially considering she dies for it. And while in canon we see her developing her own moral code come Batgirl, there's always going to be a part of me that wants to see how that gap would be bridged. And Jason is just a phenomenal way to get her to reflect on why she values that Bat's as a network at all, now that she's older and is both a little less desperate and also Has Choices.
In turn, Jason's with someone who's younger than him, and still figuring it out, and who still feels and acknowledges to some degree the horror of killing. Because if Steph kills, especially as a regular part of her work, it will not and cannot be an easy choice for her (though mind you, not as tricky as a lot of other characters in the Batfam.) There's something really juicy about Jason coming up with a person who's in a scenario so similar to him, but for whom killing hurts, deeply. Maybe he'd find himself a little more sympathetic to Bruce (and in this scenario, Cass). Maybe he blames her for the weakness. There's a lot of different ways it could go!

I love it when "they should be at the club" is like, an actual character dynamic, with person A looking at person B as they work themselves to the bone/throw their own happiness away for the greater good/take on more responsibility than anyone could ever hope to bear and they're just like. Hey. You should be at the club
#ramblings of a lunatic#this is about Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain in batgirl volume 1#literally babs is like cass wouldn't it be nice if you did things that normal 17 yr old girls get to do-#-instead of living and dying in your kung fu self hate cycle that will inevitably destroy you???#and cass is like. no#cassandra cain (and bruce wayne) voice:#''everyone asks if there's anyway to stop the self sacrifice spiral never how was the spiral it looked fun was the spiral fun?''#dick is also this for bruce but the club is less literal in that specific sense#(also this is soooo far removed from their canon dynamic. but play with me in this space for a bit-#-this but it's steph @ jason)#(like she realizes he's the same age as cass- she would not have guessed bc he's fucking huge and grizzled-#-and she's like damn. you should be at the club jason-#-just an in passing observation! arguably ribbing him about his melodramatic vengeance quest-#-that becomes a lot harder to take seriously when you remember he's barely old enough to legally drink)#(and jasons just like. what would i even do at the club steph. what part of me seems like a guy who would have fun at the club)#(Jason and Bruce are both too autistic for the club. cass is the right amount of sensory seeking autistic to get something out of the club-#-but really babs should be taking her to a mosh pit for maximum enrichment. she'd thrive)#ANYWAY. having a moment ignore me#my previously obtained ibuprofen is the last defence against me and certain doom (sore throat oof ouch)#like that meme of the soldier with knives and bombs in his back protecting the sleeping child#point being idk how long it'll last so i should sleep sooner rather than later to get the max benefits

Batfam ideas no one asked for? That’s the only thing I post atp.
Bruce “I don’t need therapy” Wayne starts publishing articles anonymously and promoting them through an anonymous twitter account to vent out his feelings and frustrations with being a bad father. Jason, whom also uses an anonymous account, becomes a fan. They become each other’s editors and learn a lot about each other and themselves through this. It’s all going well until Tim discovers it’s Bruce’s account. (I’m actively writing this one)
After Tim rescues Bruce from the time stream, he doesn’t go back to Gotham. That is until almost a year later, when all the bats are kidnapped by Ra’s and Tim has to go save them.
Weird time travel weirdness and old Tim gets thrown back in time, back to his first couple weeks as Robin. (His small self is also in the future)
Dick not understanding why Tim is keeping the family at a distance, and Tim waiting for the moment he suggests they through him into Arkum again. Damian has had enough of this miscommunication trope bs and makes them talk it out.
Damian missed his mom but doesn’t want to make Bruce feel bad, so he bottles it up. His bottle bursts open in front of Jason.
Jason always wanted to learn how to play the violin, Catherine always said it was her favourite. So he made Bruce sit through painfully squeaky lessons and even worse rehearsals before patrol. Now Jason is a proficient player, but Bruce isn’t around anymore to see his progress.
Jason stole a bunch of Dick’s sweat shirts when he was younger, even though they were never close, it still gave him comfort to have a piece of Dick with him. Dick only finds this out about a year after Jason died. All because this was the one night he had the courage to open his bedroom door and finally try and learn something about his little brother.
Tim would purposely put himself in dangerous situations so Jason would save him as Robin. Tim finds out Robin is dead because it was the one night he didn’t go out and save him.
Jason saves a child from an exploding building but doesn’t mange to save their father. Self reflection ensues and leads to Jason showing up at Bruce’s bedroom door, sobbing his eyes out at 3 am.
(Arkum Knight) Jason is VERY insecure about the J brand on his cheek, Bruce is there to reassure him.
Jason follows in Bruce’s footsteps and adopts a child. There’s a few problems though. 1. The Bats still don’t know his identity 2. They have a habit of following him, even when he leaves for patrol 3. Even in his RedHood get up, they will always call him variations of “Jason” or “Jay”.
Even though Damian is better than he originally was, Tim is still terrified he will try and cut his line again. These fears boil over when Tim is adamant about not doing missions alone with Damian.
Hope y’all enjoyed me dumping my fic ideas :)

The other day I had the thought, “Huh, someone should make an AU where Bruce gives up Batman after Jason dies! That would be interesting!”
Aaaand about two seconds later I was like, “Ah, crap, I just created The Dark Knight Returns again, didn’t I?”

thinking about jason and dick. thinking about how when jason was robin, dick was too hurt and angry at bruce to really be there for jason as a mentor and older brother. thinking about how dick is with tim, how he very clearly wants to take him in as a younger brother and show him the ropes, and how he and jason could have gotten there, too, if they had more time to figure it out.
