I was a jelly bean. Just a starburst jelly bean that the Easter bunny got for Easter. They are my favorite jellybeans. I was chilling at home, when the neighbors’ dog came into the room that looked like the physical embodiment of LSD. We were vibing. The Neebs Gaming BattleLoggers outro was playing and to be perfectly honest, that was the most chill dream I ever had. 10/10 would recommend.

💠[[STARBURST]]💠
Someone a few days ago tagged my art with “this art tastes like starbursts” and I’ve been thinking about it nonstop since. So I doubled down and went for the whole candy isle ✨
Tumblr kinda crunched this one if you’re on mobile sorry :/ open it on desktop for better quality?

IC10
Not all galaxies are spiral or elliptical (or somewhere between), like the brightest stars in our sky which are mostly huge stars, the galaxies we see tend towards the largest and most obvious ones, but similarly to stars, there's a much larger population of dwarf galaxies with an irregular shape, it is thought that up to a third of all galaxies are irregular dwarfs, with a number of much larger irregulars which were once spirals or elliptical and have been shaken up by an interaction with another galaxy.
IC10 is such an irregular dwarf galaxy, just 2.5 million light years from us in the constellation of Cassiopeia. I say "JUST", as, when it comes to galaxies, this is not just local, it's in our back garden.
Tumblr media
What is interesting about IC10 is it's classified as a starburst galaxy, one where a much larger amount of star formation is occurring that usual. As a result, it's a go-to galaxy for many astronomers, particularly those interested in the evolution of galaxies and particularly for those interested in compact super massive objects such as black holes and neutron stars.
So why is IC10 such an interesting object ? It's by far the closest starburst galaxy, the closest of the larger galaxies is M82 some 11+ million light years away from us, so proximity is one of the keys. Additionally starburst galaxies produce huge amounts of stars, and many of them are massive O type blue giants, the rockstars of the universe, living short lives (a couple of million years) and then going supernova and collapsing to form a black hole or a neutron star. When you have so many new stars being born, a huge amount of them are binary partners, and as a result, IC10 sports countless examples of binary objects containing black holes or neutron stars (and often both).
Tumblr media
Scientists are particularly interested in these objects when they merge, creating gravitational waves which can be detected here on Earth, informing us more and more about the nature of these objects.

NASA Mission Links Star Birth And Galaxy Death As Never Before
“In 2019, NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) studied the Cigar Galaxy’s gas with unprecedented sensitivities. SOFIA observes at 41,000+ feet, avoiding 99% of atmospheric water vapor: infrared astronomy’s biggest nemesis. Researchers discovered its enormous galactic wind is aligned along internal magnetic field lines. Enormous quantities of gas and dust — upwards of 50,000,000 Suns — is being transported into intergalactic space, dragging the field with it.”
Starburst galaxies are rare, and only exist where an entire galaxy becomes an active star-forming region. The closest one is pretty close, though: just 12 million light-years away. It’s known as the Cigar Galaxy, Messier 82, and with novel instruments aboard an infrared telescope, scientists can reveal and study the relationship between new stars, matter transport, and magnetic fields. We’ve come so far in our understanding of galaxy evolution already, and with new sets of observations occurring in February and March of this year, we’re poised to take the next giant leap in understanding how forming new stars can lead to the death of a galaxy.
Our cosmic neighbor right next door is helping us understand how galaxies live and die. It’s a tremendous chance to learn something new about the Universe.

Jotaro likes Starbursts but only the red and pink ones. So after finishing a bag he will usually give the left overs to Kakyoin.
