Tide Pool Adventures

“You cannot eat a raw jellyfish.” Evie says firmly. “We share one bathroom, and I am not skipping my skincare routine just because you decided to eat the ocean and  gave yourself food poisoning.” 

“Maybe the jellyfish should be your new skincare routine,” Mal says thoughtfully. “It looks soft and slimy enough.” 

“Gross. I don’t want to put things you pulled out of the ocean on my face.” 

“Or in your mouth, apparently.” Mal teases. She’s in an unexpectedly good mood. The beach, which she’d expected to be bright and sunny and full of cheery tourists, is instead slightly overcast and full of interesting things that have washed up right by the edge of the water. There’s an intriguing amount of slime in a series of pools that’ve formed under the wooden dock, and she’s got a plastic bucket that was definitely intended for children and a vague plan to gather a bunch of slime to dump on the boys later. 

“I don’t want to put anything you haven’t cleaned with soap in my mouth.” Evie says, wrinkling her nose at the thought. “And that includes you, M. We really need to stay somewhere with a shower soon.” 

“Aww, you don’t love my natural scent?” Mal says brightly. She’s still got the dead jellyfish in one hand. It’s really fun to touch. Maybe if she can put some sort of preservation spell on it, they’ll be able to fit it somewhere in the truck. 

Evie takes a subtle step away from Mal’s jellyfish hand. “I love so many things about you, and the fact that you sweat more than most grown men I know is not one of them.”

Any time I wear a mask I get “they still make you wear that ??” no, I made that decision all by myself but thank you.

#When I had first come back to work from COVID I wore a mask for a week #even though I was no longer symptomatic #just in case #and I bring the mask back any time cases start to rise in my region again #I would just wear it constantly but hauling >50lb products all day in the summer #does not mix well with wearing a mask unfortunately #It makes me overheated and get a sweat rash on my face if I don’t change the mask several times a day #but I’ll still do it if my region has another big spike #I would rather not spread disease to people if I can help it #not that they extend the same courtesy of course

I have a friend who's still highly cautious around covid because she's high risk but she keeps posting all these screenshots of tweets about covid studies on her instagram in an attempt to convince people that covid is still very dangerous

and it's not that covid isn't still potentially dangerous, but one quick google search has allowed me to find every study that she has referenced, and without fail, every single one of them has been working with pre-vaccine, pre-omicron data. the most recent one she's posting about is about cardiac conditions post covid, and wouldn't you know, the entire sample was taken from people who caught covid between march 2020 and january 2021.

this was pre-vaccine, pre-omicron, hell, it was pre-delta variant (remember that one). this was the wild type covid, which our bodies were least immune to. it was the type that was most known to be causing cardiac symptoms and blood clots. besides delta, it was the most deadly. and no one was vaccinated.

so yes, in that group of people, who were unfortunate enough to catch covid during that period, the results of this study are likely very valid- they are at increased risk of heart disease. and that should be talked about and studied more and if those people end up with cardiac symptoms they need to be receiving proper care.

but we should not be assuming, without further study, that these risks are still the same for those who've been vaccinated, or who only caught covid after the omicron variant became dominant (the omicron lineages have been pretty different from the wild type and other pre-omicron variants, so it's worth noting that). like this is a study that must be replicated with a post-vaccine, post-omicron sample before you will even remotely convince me that those cardiac risks are the same as they were before.

and it is driving me crazy that my friend, who is also fucking trained in how to read science, is posting this shit seemingly without looking at the actual papers or thinking about the context at all. like it is driving me absolutely bananas. these posts aren't even like, direct quotes from the papers, they're screenshots of randos on twitter talking about these papers, as if twitter rando knows jack shit about what they're talking about. like it's all well and good to still care about covid but could you at least do it with less of the fear mongering?

#that's what bothers me I think #these posts always have a flavor of 'you should still be just as afraid of this virus as you were in march 2020' #and that's just...not true #that is patently not true #even if you're high risk the situation has changed a bit it's not as dire as it was though you should still be more concerned obvs #like I'm still all for wearing masks in public spaces #especially crowded ones #but the fear mongering has to stop we cannot talk about this like it's 2020 anymore #and the solutions cannot be the 2020 solutions anymore either #like I agree the government just dropped covid like a hot potato and way too quickly but just...why can't we just say that? #I have enough health anxiety I don't need these kinds of studies thrown in my face when they're all backlogged #...that's probably my real issue is that I read this shit and then get sent all into a tizzy because I had covid last summer #only to go and fact check shit and find out that the data isn't even useful or applicable to someone like me #who caught covid after three vaccines and during the BA.5 omicron wave #arguably one of the mildest of the variants #so it's just like #can you not #and there's no fucking filters on instagram

Oh man, I am....not feeling so good.

Something definitely feels WrongTM for the past week. Most likely due to the long exposure in wildfire smoke. I legitimately feel depressed.

I think..I should take a break from doing art until I feel better (which knowing me, probably won't take long until I get impatient).

two years, masking, no covid. two weeks, not masking, suspiciously cold-like symptoms directly after learning about having direct contact with someone who’s covid positive. i mean i knew i was taking a risk finally deciding that i wasn’t going to mask but damn that was fast

#my rapid test came back neg but honestly its too much of a coincidence that i learned i was exposed a day before symptom onset #so i called off work the rest of the week which sucks because i just started again for the summer and i need the money #and im getting a pcr test tomorrow #which i know is also a risk because youre supposed to wait a few days for the most accurate results #but i need to get back to work #and not look like im using a silly little cold as an excuse to skip out of work #really wish my rapid test came back positive but i wasnt expecting it to #its just too early on for that to be at all accurate #i had a friend testing negative for a full week on rapids before she finally decided to hang out with friends again #and that night she tested positive #so yeah i dont trust that negative #anyways i will be masking the rest of the summer again #it was nice while it lasted but i guess the face sweat is back for summer 22 #side note but im nervous because my cat has been mirroring me today because i was the only one home all day #and im nervous to give him covid #i know its super rare but i still worry #i havent been petting him a lot but still #he is little baby precious no harm can come to him or i will die #cloudy rambles #cloudy's covid chronicles

went out in drag for the first time since 2019 :) to a live production of the rocky horror show. also the first play i've seen since 2019 i suppose! love that the theatre is doing mandatory-mask nights, being in a crowd of 500 was exhilarating and hearing live singing brought me to tears.

we were going with my inlaws so i wore this crinoline to make it much less salacious - kind of a janet-frank fusion going on. i apologize for not documenting the salacious version & for not having better photos of the makeup! but what can you do. i was having a good night and not thinking about the internet for once.

outfit is all thrifted, thank god for transtape, and i still can't walk in heels
