Fuck it, here's an Agent Mega dissertation
Alright since I have such elaborate headcanon for my beloved precious Owen Carvour, I guess I should do it for Agent Curt Mega too. Sigh.
So, going off of the last big one, if Owen is born in 1928, then I'm gonna say Curt was born in 1930. I'm forever won to the Texan agent mega headcanon, but I think it's safe to say that Mrs. Mega is not from Texas, probably more like New York or I've seen people say New Jersey.
We know nothing about Agent Mega's dad, but I imagine he was kind of a loser and low level con artist and moved his pregnant wife down to Texas to do scams around the bustling oil industry, and then soon after Curt was born a scam collapsed and he ran off. It's either that or an Aladdin 3 situation where he was secretly a spy the whole time and had to go into hiding.
So we've got mama Mega, raising a VERY hyperactive (read: ADHD) little boy on her own, in a place where she doesn't have any support, and he just becomes her entire world. But she has to work a lot, so Curt becomes used to taking care of himself, and most importantly- keeping himself busy so he doesn't lose it.
In this headcanon Curt would only be 15 when WWII ends- not old enough to fight, but definitely old enough to have personally known a lot of kids from his hometown who come home in caskets. I just truly think of WWII as a formative experience for both these guys. For Curt it just feeds into that inferiority complex.
Now anybody who has ADHD knows that you already spend a lot of your life feeling inadequate, feeling self-conscious about not being able to be the person other people want you to be (*especially* if you're queer). You get defensive, especially when criticized. You also get restless.
I headcanon Curt as growing up in Abilene, Texas, mostly because I have a friend who grew up there and I've visited and the vibe is right.
Tumblr media
I don't know if anybody has ever seen The Last Picture Show, but its a film set in small town Texas in 1951-1952 (so a little late for our timeline but still) and it's (more or less) about two high school seniors essentially trying to escape this suffocatingly small, dying town before they become doomed to spend their lives trapped there.
That's definitely what I think about Agent Mega too- this gay, ADHD teenage boy climbing the walls of this little town, never being able to fully be himself. But he's got a lot of energy (and more than a little anger) to burn off, so he does sports. It's Texas, so football for sure. Maybe wrestling too. Perhaps wrestling is even where he has his gay come to jesus moment.
And when he isn't doing sports, he's home, alone (mama Mega is working so hard), out back drinking a beer (or two, or three) and teaching himself how to shoot. I think he becomes hyperfixated on becoming an expert marksman, because with all of this shit he cannot control, all the stuff he is supposed to be but isn't, this is one area where it feels like he has the power here.
What starts off as "kid drinking beer to feel cool and rebellious" starts to morph into a lifetime dependence on alcohol. Substance use is a big issue for a lot of ADHDers for the same reason I think it would be for Curt- it calms him down. It eases that constant restlessness in his bones. It softens the edges of other people's criticisms of him. It makes him care a bit less what others think about him.
In a vicious cycle, he drinks to avoid feeling those big feelings (especially as a man, especially as a gay man, especially as a gay man in Texas), but the drinking leads to more criticism, which leads to more drinking to numb the emotional response to that criticism.
But his hyperfixation on learning to shoot pays off. Let's say he becomes a junior state champion trapshooter (did I look up trapshooting competitions from the 1940s? yes I did). He's good, especially when he hits the sweet spot of drinking just enough to calm his ass down but not so much that he's useless. Maybe this is how he comes to the attention of the A.S.S.
And he fully believes that these skills he cultivated, the ability to hit hard and run fast and shoot accurately, his ability to escape when it doesn't feel remotely possible, is why many years later he just kinda rolls his eyes at Owen for insisting that they do things carefully and methodically. Careful didn't get him out of small town Texas. Careful didn't get him the exciting non-stop life he has now, a life where he *almost* gets to be himself a lot of the time.
When Owen "dies," and its Curt's fault, he naturally turns to drinking to numb that pain. But its a lot of pain, so it takes a lot of alcohol to kill it.
I'm sure I could go on, but as always I have rambled a lot here so I'm just gonna leave it.

Walker episode 3 review
Making space. For past lost love, for current love, for children’s independence.
The episode starts with Liam foreshadowing the state of Cordell and Geri relationship when he explains the Japanese art of kintsugi, putting broken pottery pieces back together by using gold as glue, a metaphor for embracing flaws and imperfections and creating another piece of art.  Cordell and Geri’s relationship is complicated by the tragic deaths of their respective partners within 2 years of each other and the four of them were friends since high school.
Trey and Liam tease Cordell for not telling Geri that he loves her, and Trey advises the classic “give her a drawer” at his place to show commitment. Liam talks about Stella to Cordell, but he rather trusts Stella to come to him as he's giving his adult child space. Then Cordell follows Trey's advice on giving Geri space in his wardrobe in an awkward but sweet scene.  Cordell and Geri were monogamous with their respective late partners for 20 years, so they're inexperienced when it comes to new relationships.
Like father like daughter, the Rawlings are bad influences on the fiery member of the Walker clan.  Sadie Rawlings had convinced Stella to pretend not to have met Witt before the break-in because Stella is about to go to college and Sadie has a record.  In a panic, Stella went along.  I think ever since she spent a night in jail for something she didn’t do but because she hadn’t earned her father's trust due to her lack of credibility weighs on Stella's fear.
Like father and daughter, Stella investigates off-the-books (i.e. not telling adults) on who is targeting her with threatening messages and leaving her car smelling like gasoline, a matchbook, and Witt’s picture.  Wait, I didn’t know Witt’s body was burned in a fiery car crash.  Was this the first time they said this or was it mentioned in an earlier episode?
Liam's default state is to help people, but Stella shuts him out and Cordell isn't biting, so he's helping Cassie clear out her storage unit of sentimental items.  Meanwhile, Cordell looks for a shirt that Emily gave him, which Geri had accidentally donated when she made room for her things.  This upsets Cordell who assumed because Geri was present when Emily gave him the shirt 20 years ago, that she would know how much it means to him.  Half of Cassie’s sentimental collections aren’t even stuff she partook in but will once she slows down in some unscheduled point in the future.  Cordell looks to the past while Cassie looks to the future, neither are in the present.
Alan Alda once said, “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in.” Liam and Abilene respectively encourage Cassie and Cordell to start anew by not making assumptions and being active in the present. Liam gives Cassie tickets to a robot fight event and she in turns gives him a personalized key chain that he wanted all his life but never purchased for himself because Cordell couldn't have one due to how unusual his name is.
Side note: I really need a backstory on why Bonham and Abeline saddled their first born with such an unusual name.
Side note 2: Cassie couldn't have a personalized key chain either because there isn't enough Cassandras in the world. The Greek myth origin of Cassandra was a priestess who could see the future but was never believed. Hence Cassie living up to her namesake ever since she arrived in the scene.
Turns out Geri hadn't been so great with communicating to Cordell either when he had accidentally broke Hoyt’s mug but Geri didn’t mention it.  They promised to try to communicate better and they finally said their “I love you” for the first time after 3 years of slow burn and misfires.  These two don’t have a traditional “getting together” as they are widower and widow, even though Geri and Hoyt were never married their on-off-again relationship did last 20 years.  While Cordell couldn’t get his Emily-gave-me-shirt back, he glued Hoyt’s mug back together, a callback to Liam's kintsugi talk at the start of the episode.
August first day at preparation boot camp led him to make the same mistakes that many young soldiers make ahead of their first deployment, they sell all their belongings but then they have nothing to come back to upon their return home. They made too much space but fortunately Trey mentors August towards a more balanced head space and he decides to keep his vinyl collection just like Cassie keeping her dvd collections.
While on night duty at the Ranger HQ, Cassie asks Cordell and Trey to catch her up while she was gone for 5 months; jokingly including hackers and serial killers.  Seeing Trey's and Cordell's silent facial communication, Cassie turns on her inner Sam Winchester excitement over a real serial killer on the loose and offers up her FBI connections to help with the off-the-book investigation.
The episode ends Stella and Sadie are coming up with dead ends in their off-the-book investigation when a very much alive and not-burned Witt forces Stella to drive him to an undisclosed location.
Speculation  #3!  After hearing that Stella had visited his memorial, Witt decided Stella is the one whom he can trust to get him out of whatever predicament he's in.
Score: 8.9 out of 10.  A good bottle episode focusing on character studies and development before next week's episode's deeper dive into case of the serial killer Jackal.

They didn't know we were seeds
Chapter 2
Cw: drug use, mentions of death, trauma, suicide
@justrainandcoffee @emotionalcadaver @peakyswritings @call-sign-shark
Tumblr media
She has never used a knife for anything other than its intended use.
Eva, while luckier than her partner, who hails from the northern region near district two, had never hunted her own food nor worked in a slaughterhouse nor a meat processing plant.
Her family had once been wealthy, owning fertile lands and swamps towards the east until the hurricanes and the droughts forced them further in land towards the desert, where her grandmother lived with Eva’s aunt who lived in the main town.
Her mother and aunt were apothecaries and midwives, her father had been a ranch hand who died when the twister decimated their home and modest wealth when Eva was a baby. Eva’s elder sister had died from childbed fever and her brothers did not survive their reaping.
Alan had died when he volunteered for Gabe when he was 12 only for Gabe to die two years after. Isabel, Eva’s mother, had entrusted fourteen-year-old Eva to her sister, Olivia, who was no stuck with the burden of another mouth to feed, and never returned.
Eva would be different from her brothers and sister and mother and father. Eva will live. Forever if she must.
She excels in foraging, in basic medicine and could keep her own against a weaker opponent. Eva is hopeless in a fight and yet Laurie is there willing to train her just to be close enough to touch her.
To him and the other careers it is a game, an assured victory and not a death sentence. He laughs and cheers her on when she finally proves she can hold her own against someone if need be.
Laurie is sweet when he isn’t showing how deadly he is. He invited her to his table even as the rest of the careers sneered at them for being from a poor district.
His twin brother won his games with a sword in a swamp ghost town where you died of illness or Jack Nelson’s golden handled sword, and he intends to win the same way. He’s taller than his own mentors who praise him for his skills. He is good at everything, just like his twin was.
Their mother had paid a fortune to have the frozen seed of the first career victor, Iacobus, implanted in her and birth them.
His victory was destiny. He says this as he holds her hand under the table.
The hunger games have never had two twins win two games even if plenty of twins have been reaped and killed before. If Laurie wins, he makes history for that.
If Eva wins, she makes history for being district 10’s victor forty-five years after the previous one.
The first male victor was on the 9th games and served as a mentor until he took a revolver to his head after the first Quarter Quell when both tributes chosen were his own niece and nephew. Abilene had been the only mentor they had, and she was less useful than a potted plant.
Their escort, Clemen Whimsiwick, a man with his hair in intricate braids and a penchant for complaining about everything with their stylist as if she were his mother, is only useful because he has the avox spike Abi’s food and put her to bed like a fussy child.
Escorts make good enough money and all you have to do is babysit for two weeks every year, he said high out of his mind when they were coming here on the train. He’s very chatty, especially with the marijuana Eva’s aunt gave him as a bribe in exchange for a few more minutes with her.
And because of that gift and Tigris having the surname Snow, he is amenable to talking strategy with them as he coaches them for the interviews tomorrow night. He suggests alliances with those who might get them to survive day one at least.
“Do you think we can trust the careers?” Dustin Clay, the sandy haired male tribute who’s been working at a slaughterhouse since he was eleven, asks as they come up with their own strategies at dinner that night. He has a larger chance of surviving, his village had very unpredictable weather from dust storms in summer, tornados in spring and snowstorms in winter.
“No. He wants to win; he will forget his crush the moment the bell rings.” Eva shook her head knowing Tigris’ and Clemen’s strategy is bullshit. “Just grab what’s at the edge of the cornucopia and run, it saved Abilene, it could save us.”
“I’m just as good as they are, Evie,” Dustin says using the nickname Laurie gave her this week to show he thinks he is at a Career’s level. “When I win, I’ll make sure your family is taken care of.”
He still had his family and seen her with pity when Clemen learned Eva was all that was left of her immediate family. He thinks he will win because he has more to lose and had scored a nine for dressing the mannequins like it was game.
Eva knows she has a better chance because nothing makes you more dangerous than having nothing left to lose except her life. Even if she only scored a 5 because making medicine from plants is harder than making poison from them.
“You may not win, but at least you have a decent chance of making it into the finals.” Clemen says reminding Dustin that even he cannot beat a career at their own game. “You too, Eve, you might manage to get Nelson to spare you if you show him your tits or whatever distracts him long enough for you to run.”
Do they allow that in the arena? She’s never even heard a swear word on the mandatory watching of the games at home. Everything is somehow squeaky clean even if it’s a massacre that’s being broadcast into everyone’s homes. Even the commercials cannot have anything untoward.
Tumblr media
Lucy Gray Baird wore her old red dress for the interviews while Tigris and her friend spent all night fixing the one she was reaped in.
Eva wears a replica of it with a brooch with a singular white rose that matches the one in her hair. She is a beauty, taller than Lucy Gray had been and yet there is something about the two girls that feels as if destiny crafted them of the same mold.
Coriolanus had been given one of grandma’am’s famous roses to give her as a token. He had been so nervous that morning, afraid of it going all wrong.
Dustin has blonde waves like her cousin once had, though darker blond and less gaunt than he had been those days where they were just on the edge of starvation. He almost looks like the boy who died in the districts as she dresses him in an outfit reminiscent of the one Coriolanus wore when he was made Lucy Gray’s mentor.
The tesserae buttons were bought at a building supply store, once those had been a luxury they could never afford to replace and now she had bought a dozen of them for a pittance. She bought so many she put them all around her home from the drawers in her closet to the crystal bowl in the living room.
He will hate her just as she’s learned to hate him, and it will be worth seeing him sweat and squirm when his ghosts come back to haunt him.
But he makes her dress children for their slaughter and said he did it out of love for her, and now she makes her grand finale by showing him how much she hates him for making her complicit in all those children’s deaths.
“Do you sing, Eva?” the tigress asks the girl who hides her nerves well enough to smile and feign attention at those being interviewed. But she sees it, the way her hand dig into the upholstery of the chair and grip if for dear life.
“I couldn’t hold a tune if my life depended on it, ma’am.” The girl shook her head laughing slightly one of her hands releasing its hold on the chair and brushing away the fringe she cut by herself earlier from her forehead. “Clemens said I can just be my charming self and not to tell the Capitol how my family died, they don’t like hearing about sad things like that.”
The girl’s brothers had both been reaped and her sister died of natural causes, it was not seen as television worthy by those in charge while inhumane violence was.
“The shirt was your sister’s, wasn’t’ it?” Tigirs had not seen an image of the dead family, but she knew out of instinct. She still likes to wear her mother’s fur coat for comfort and warmth after all these years.
“It was our mother’s and when she got married, Feli made the embroidery herself because she found it too plain. I was supposed to save it for my own big day, but I knew even then that I’d never see it.” The girl let go of the seat completely now that fear has won and gives up the veneer of confidence.
But she will, Tigris will make sure Eva sees the day she marries even if Coriolanus kills her. She cannot bring both of them home, but she will settle with one.
“Tell them that, not all of us here are devoid of empathy.” Tigris whispers and adds something no one here ever voices where they can be seen or heard, “Not all of us approve of the games.”
Tigris Snow is seventy-two years old when she sees the audience moved to tears for a tribute. Eva doesn’t sing, but she is charming and beautiful and that is enough to move them as she tells them how she only hopes for a quick death.

🥀Chapter Four: City Of Starlight⛲
Tumblr media
(Gif Not Mine)
Summary: In need of clothing that suits her environment more, Abilene is taken out for a night out on the town. Masterlist found here
Trigger Warnings: alcohol use, verbal abuse (Mor doing Mor things)
It wasn’t until the following afternoon that Abilene realized she nearly slept for twenty-four hours. When her eyes opened, the sun had been in the same position as when she fell asleep. Like she had time skipped in a video game to the exact hour. Honestly, she was thankful the people who had taken her in decided to wait for her to wake up instead of just burying her in the back or chucking her in a river.
Her clothing had thankfully been dry when she got up, well mostly anyway. Certain parts were still damp, but overall they were wearable. Once she had slipped on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, a man came to the door to fetch her. The same one she had spit water on last night, Cassian was his name, though it took her awhile to remember. Mentally she had dubbed him vomit boy until her mind had finally woken up completely.
Honestly though, if it wasn’t for how mortified she had felt about the whole situation, she might not have remembered his name at all.
The late lunch that followed had been, interesting, to say the least. The inner circle had been very kind to her, almost too kind. She wasn’t quite sure how to explain it, something about how they acted felt off. They were all smiles and sweet tones, but their gaze reminded her of a leopard seal waiting beneath the water’s surface. Waiting patiently for the first sign of a penguin they could latch onto and make a meal of. All and all, very unnerving.
She hadn’t even time to question the validity of everything around her. With her brain stuck in survival mode, Abilene figured she could ask questions later, when she was sure she was safer. After she figured out the food was safe, she set to observing those around, only really speaking when spoken to.
“I have an idea,” Morrigan, most commonly called Mor, spoke loud enough to get Abilene’s attention. She was rather pretty, with blonde hair and brown eyes. The most bubbly of the group, but seemingly the most fake of them. “How about we go into town to pick you up a few things, my treat of course.”
“Oh, why?”
“Well why not? A little shopping won’t be so bad.”
“And it’d help you get more acquainted with the city.” Cassian joined in. If Abilene was honest, she found the man rather intimidating. He was taller than her, but it was more about how muscular he was that scared her. She could likely take down someone taller than her, but it would be much harder to do the same with someone stronger than her. The same kind of observation went for the other men of the Inner Circle.
That little conversation was how Abilene got to where she currently was. Trailing behind Mor, Azriel, and Cassian amongst stalls full of livestock. The first of the four sections of the city, Velaris was it’s name Abilene had learned at the beginning of the tour, the city of starlight.
Truly it was fitting, with how the city began to stir awake in the last hours of daylight. Such cities, where she was from, would become mostly empty with everyone hurrying home, these streets felt like they were getting more crowded by the moment.
A cow moo’ed, and her head snapped toward the animal. The cow in question was her favorite kind, a highland with reddish brown hair that covered her eyes. Abilene stepped off the path, checking to make sure the others were still in sight before she did so. It wouldn’t do for her to lose sight of them. No matter how little she trusted them, they were all she had in this city right now.
Though that wasn’t something she wanted to focus on right then. All she wanted to think about was how beautiful Bessie (the cow) was. Abilene reached out carefully, cooing at the animal as she waited for her permission to pet her. When Bessie didn’t pull back, Abilene softly ran her fingers through Bessie’s almost silky hair. “Hello darling, aren’t you the most precious thing.” She softly scratched under Bessie’s chin, almost wishing she could take her back to the house with her.
Though she didn’t have the means to take care of Bessie, a girl could dream about living her cottagecore life.
“Abilene,” Her dream was shattered instantly by Azriel, who had come back to fetch her after the space between them had become too much.
He was the outside of the Inner Circle Abilene had gathered. The popular punk if she had to fit him into a highschool stereotype. It was weird, but for a reason she couldn’t quite place, she trusted him more for it. He was tall like the other men in the group, honestly they all looked as if they were siblings. He was just as dangerous as them too no doubt.
He had a sad air about him, but the way he carried it gave the impression that he was trying to be muted about it. Though if one looked closely enough they could see the noticeable weight on him. It was something that made him seem more vulnerable, though Abilene was sure he wouldn’t want to be seen that way.
Abilene wanted to understand him, but he wasn’t much of a talker. Something she was more then okay with, the silence between the two was a nice contrast to how chattery Cassian and Mor were.
Reluctantly, she bid Bessie goodbye before following after Azriel. It wouldn’t do for her to get lost here, she had to remind herself the moment she wanted to turn around and go back for Bessie a little longer. Misbehaving probably also wouldn’t do, that way they could get whatever they needed done quickly. The noises of the people and running water were starting to overwhelm her.
As they passed over the bridge, Abilene was able to see the sources of the running water. An ocean was visible from where she stood, the river they crossed over feeding into it. The dying light of the sun danced over the small waves that periodically rose and fell, painting their water an orange shade that reminded her of a dreamsicle.
Although pretty, she hoped they wouldn’t drag her to the beach that likely accompanied the ocean. The sand was her enemy after all, and in a city of potential foes, she wouldn’t want to deal with another one.
Cassian and Mor took the lead, chattering to each other as they led them through a new section of the city. This one with shops more so than stalls like the last had. From the few times she took her eyes from the ground, she could guess things like jewelry, and similar goods were sold here.
At some point, she turned to glance at Azriel, her eyes narrowing in on something in particular about his appearance. She had been curious about it since she first saw him, but hadn’t had the chance to ask till now. “Why do you have multiple shadows?”
His gaze shifted her way momentarily, taking a moment before answering. “I’m a shadow singer.” He said simply.
“What is a shadow singer? Can you manipulate your shadows or something?” The urge to reach out and poke them was great, but Abilene resisted. Something about the entire thing reminded her of Peter Pan and his shadow.
“It’s a type of fae, and I can manipulate them,” His words were short again, but his tone didn’t give any indication of him being annoyed by her curiosity. She at least sure hoped he wasn’t, since she had many more stored away in her mind’s vault to ask later. Perhaps she would even come up with more before then too.
“So does that mean they aren’t sentient or do they have some sentience? Like are they like us or more like a dog?”
He opened his mouth to respond to the question, but the words died in his throat when a voice from the front of their pack cut in.
“We’re here!” Mor said, stopping in front of a quaint shop. The front door and outer walls were painted similarly to the others surrounding it, in hues of blue and white. The trims were dark brown with lilacs planted in little pots beside the display window.
Inside the shop, fabrics lined walls, and dresses, suits and various other clothing were hung on racks placed sporadically throughout. The woman behind a wooden counter looked up, a smile pulling over her face. “Welcome, how may I help you today?”
Mor gestured to Abilene who stood at the back of the group. “We need to get some clothes made for the Night Court’s newest guest.”
The woman straightened her back, grabbing the measuring tape that rested beside her assortment of clothing pins. “Of course, allow me to get some measurements down, then we can begin sketching something.”
Abilene couldn’t help but begin to feel nervous. She had never been measured before, but she knew the woman was about to get very up close and personal. “What do you need me to do?”
“Just hold up your arms, and I’ll do the rest.” The woman assured her, gesturing for her to walk toward a more open area of the shop. “Come now, this won’t take very long.”
❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁
“We’ve all gone to the stores we wanted to, perhaps you should choose one.” Mor turned to look back at Abilene. It was one of the few times she had acknowledged her in the past while. Her focus had mostly been on Cassian, and his had been on her.
Abilene turned her head up surveying the shops, none caught her eye. Or at least there were none she would be interested in going to. “Is there a book store close by?”
“Of course, just down the road and a street or two over.”
“Could we go there then?”
“Let’s stop and get a drink first, I’m parched.” Cassian gestured to a wood building nearby with a sign hanging above its door. The dark wood had a wine glass full of stars carved into its surface, very in theme given the rest of the city.
“Good idea,” Mor agreed, her crimson skirts swishing as she walked. “I was beginning to feel thirsty myself.”
They entered and took their seats at a table in the center of the room. The interior of the bar had quite a few moon motifs littered throughout, its chairs made of darkly painted wood and the tables a striking white color. Though with the blue light emitted from the wall sconces, they looked a very light shade of blue.
Once they had settled in, a worker came over to take their orders, before hurrying away to go collect what had been asked for. Mor and Cassian continued talking, and Abilene only found herself occasionally listening into the conversation.
"Didn't expect to see her in a place like this." Mor said her usual artificially sweet tone now more venomous. Abilene looked up, following her gaze to a woman sitting in a booth in the corner of the pub.
Her face looked gaunt, and her sharp features were eerily similar to Feyre's.  Honestly, Abilene was willing to bet they were related, with her golden brown hair tied up into a bun above her head, and the blueish gray eyes, though hers had dark circles beneath them. There was something distant about her stare as she sat with her back straight, her eyes focusing on the book in front of her.
Her gaze flicked up, catching that of Mor's, then Cassian's. Her features were guarded. She gave no reaction, only turned back to her drink, lifting it to her lips and taking a sip.
"If it weren't for Rhy's money I don't think she would be. She's come to drink more of it I assume." Cassian sneered, and Mor laughed in response.
Abilene slipped into analyzing mode, watching the woman for a long moment and only half listening to the others. She was beautiful, icy, and enigmatic in a way.
"That's Nesta by the way." Cassian said, leaning forward on the table.
"Feyre's useless older sister." Mor's mean girl persona seemed to triple when she spoke, "a pathetic waste of space really."
"Why is she useless?" Abilene didn't trust these people, or how well they judged someone's character. However, she still wanted to know why they were coming at her with such harsh words.
“She let Feyre be the sole caretaker of their family,” Mor accepted her drink from the waitress, the repulsed edge to her gaze not fading as she kept her eyes trained on Nesta. “She let Feyre go off and hunt while she sat on her ass, even though Feyre was just a child.”
“They look like they’re around the same age though, are they not?” If Feyre had been a child when that happened, wouldn’t Nesta have been one too?
“She’s only a few years older, but it doesn’t matter.” Cassian lifted his drink to his lips. “It was a cowardly thing to do.”
Abilene gave him a skeptical look as he downed his drink. When him and Mor turned back to their earlier conversation, Abilene looked back at the woman they had been ridiculing.
She focused on the book in front of Nesta, that was her in. They key to the door of conversation. Without much word to the group at her table, (save for a little “I’ll be back” to Azriel), she approached the table where Nesta sat.
The woman seemed to sense her almost immediately, her eyes flicking up from the table to her. Her gaze narrowed, not quite cruel, but wary, calculating as she sized Abilene up.
“What’s that book, if you don’t mind me asking?” She asked her eyes moving from the woman to the leather bound item with purplish words painted on its spine. Nesta’s gaze softened a little, seemingly a little startled by the question. The shield was up, but she had lowered her sword, if only slightly.
“It’s called The Gilded Tune.” There was a soft slur to her speech. If she wasn’t already drunk, she was getting there. Which wasn’t surprising with the presence of the two empty goblets beside the half full one.
“Oh, what’s it about?” She slipped into the booth seat across from Nesta. Her feet were too sore from the day’s walking to remain standing for too long.
“A woman, with a beautiful voice being locked away so that only this Lord can hear it. His advisor takes a liking to her, and plans to help free her with the help of a scholar. It’s a romance.”
“Oh, that’s cool,” Abilene was already making a mental note to check if the bookstore had it once she had gotten there. “That sounds like something I’d read. Are you enjoying it?”
Nesta paused a moment, drinking from her goblet as the wheels in her mind turned. “Yes it’s-” Nesta fell quiet, her features sharpening as her eyes flicked to the space behind Abilene. The sword once again raised.
“Abilene,” She turned, again finding Azriel standing behind her. Cassian and Mor were already standing beside the door, disgust evident on their faces when they looked at Nesta.
“I’m coming.” She gave a dramatic sigh at the prospect of having to walk again. Even hesitating a moment before finally standing. “I hope you continue to enjoy your book. If I see you again, hopefully you can tell me how it goes.”
“If we see each other again.” She met the gaze of Cassian and Mor for only a moment before focusing back on her goblet.
Abilene hoped she would see the woman again, if not, she’d find a way. She always did.
❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁
Dinner had been ready by the time they had returned to the town house. Abilene was so tired that she nearly plopped into the chair at the dining table. Though her fear of breaking anything had stopped her. Everything about the house screamed expensive and she definitely didn’t have the means to replace anything. Ending up in a fantasy ouran highschool situation wasn’t exactly ideal at the moment, especially not with this crowd.
“Guess who we found at the pub drinking herself to death again.” Mor lifted her glass to her lips, no doubt filled with wine like it had been at the pub. She spoke with an almost satisfied hum. As if the thought of such suffering pleased her. A grimace formed over Feyre’s face as she looked up at the blonde sitting beside Abilene.
“Nesta,” She looked annoyed, very annoyed. Rhysand who sat beside her didn’t seem in any much of a better mood.
“Bingo, honestly I’m surprised she can still make it home at night with all she drinks.” Mor sneered.
“Well it’s not her who has to worry about it,” Cassian cut in, “I’m sure the men she fucks have that covered.”
“Doesn’t she bring a new one home every night though?”
Everyone seemed halfway amused, and the other half annoyed with the mention of Nesta and her activities. Abilene wondered if their commentary had to be so obnoxious, like the popular table in a highschool lunchroom. Or at least one in a CW show.
Honestly, it made her uncomfortable, the way they all so casually insulted a woman who so obviously needed their help. It wasn’t like she had known Nesta long enough to defend her properly though. So to keep the peace (for now at least), she changed the subject.
“So what’s for dinner?”
Authors Note: I'm mad at myself for not having this out sooner, I apologize y'all right when I thought I could get it out on time life got hectic again thank you for your patience ^^

Nakhti came to put the lights out, rather that was what she told herself as she quietly opened the door. It was her maternal instincts whispering to her to check in on him.
It came as no surprise to her to see the children had snuck in and nestled themselves in between Zhen’s robes as they slept. A slight smile touched her lips as Nakhti slid the door behind her and heaved a sigh of relief.
It took all her willpower not to cross the distance much sooner, fighting the motherly urge to embrace an unwilling child to her chest. He needed to approach her first, cross the distance, and meet her halfway.
The lines of strain on his face, knotted shoulder muscles, and the faint shadow under his hollow golden gaze. She fought the urge to mother him, valiantly until he confessed. She could see the fractures made by the humans and despised them all the more for it. She ignored the anger churning in her gut as she met with Abilene in the living quarters, the Whimscott twisting her hands together as she waited.
“Will he be alright?”
Abilene was also touched by his carefree nature and kindness. How relieved Nakhti was to see Zhen open up to her when she fussed over his robes. There was a fire in her that refused to be put out. But like Zhen, Nakhti couldn't resist the urge to mother her as well.
Nakhti brushed loose strands from Abilene’s eyes. “Give him a bit of time, sweet Abby. Right now, he is fragile.” So wounded was the Ho-oh, the Kangaskhan's brow drew inward with worry. “Check by in the morning. I am sure he would appreciate your company then,” she said. She refused to nurture hate that threatened to stir inside Zhen. Allowing the wound to fester would make her no different than the humans.
Abilene’s face lit up, “Thank you, Nahkti.” Her hug was sudden, catching the motherly beast off guard. But she melted, all the same, returning the gesture.
“I am pleased you have entered his life. Please continue to be yourself, Abilene.”

Ok, so maybe this question is too broad. But what are your hands down favorite sex scenes in contemporaries? Just the scenes you return to again and again?
Sex scene questions are NEVER too broad. The depiction of sex in media is one of my favorite things to talk about, for srs or for "YOU GOTTA SEE/READ THIS" purposes.
Soooo lol I left a few Sierra Simone books off the "angstiest contemporaries" list because while they are not paranormal or whatever, sometimes her New Camelot-verse books feel too... intense? But whatever they're contemporary and these books have some of my favorite sex scenes ever so YA GETTING THEM.
(Among, as it turns out, many other scenes from many other books.)
New Camelot:
American Queen--Embry deflowering Greer which has a) surprise virgin b) possessive dark Embry content, which is some of my FAVORITE content in that series; the whole "talking to my groom on the phone while riding the best man's face and listening to him jack off and we're actually all kinda sad about it" scene--Ash giving Embry to Greer as a wedding present is SOOOO FUCKED but SOOOOO GOOD; the wedding night scene with the first threesome hell fucking yeah
American Prince--Ash and Embry's first time in the flashback with all the blood and the "you look beautiful in the moonlight"-ing; Embry and Greer's hardcore CNC scene where it begins as like, therapeutic playacting and evolves into it being THEM and one of the central conflicts of the series (Embry and Greer love Ash but are both so devoted to Ash that they also, especially Embry, resent his presence because they need their own space together) and then at the end he sees her in the full light and like gasps in horror because she's covered in bite marks and bruises and she's like :D about it because Greer is a freak; the "blindfold you with a Mt. Rushmore tie and blow you to express my eterrrrnal gratitude scene; the "let's make Greer feel better" kinda fucked up green apple scent threesome; the "Ash is very sads because his first wife died so he shows up in the rain and fucks the shit out of Embry to cope" flashback; Greer thinking that Embry Cheated On The Polycule and being like "WELCOME HOME CHEATER" and asking him if Abilene's pussy is as sweet as hers before he's like "THERE'S NOBODY SWEETER" and drops to his knees to eat her out while she's standing.
He's my faaavorite.
American King: OBVIOUSLY, the "it's a very sad occasion and The Polycule Measure Is Being Threatened So We're Gonna Have A Threesome For Three Chapters" scene, AMAZING, shoutout for Embry being balls deep in Greer and before Ash can put it in being all "I THINK WE SHOULD DISCUSS OUR RELATIONSHIP AND ITS BOUNDARIES" and Ash being like "are you fucking kidding me" before just forging ahead, one of the funniest things I've Ever read; the Greer/Embry reunion sex where he comes inside her super quick and is like "WHOOPS SORRY" and eats her out immediately after; the "Embry Lost So He Gets Mild CBT" scenes which fr is one of the filthiest things I've EVER READ; the "Ash Lost So He Gets Face Fucked" scene, largely because of "the might Maxen Colchester has a gag reflex" ugh kill me; the "Embry fucks Ash with a dildo in the sex club" flashback; Ash and Embry's Last First, CRYING TEARS.
Writing all that out (and look dude, when I say I reread those scenes a lot, I AM SERIOUS) I realize there isn't a single solo Ash/Greer scene, and it's not that I don't love them, but they have the least FRAUGHT sex scenes so it's less memorable. Like, my favorite Ash/Greer sex scene is in American Queen after he finds out Embry had sex with her first and he's super jealous of both of them (and she doesn't... fully realize that yet) and fucks her being like "AND DID HE DO THIS??? AND THIS?????". It's great love that content.
Salt in the Wound: the scene where Mark takes Isolde's virginity with fingers on and is like "LOOK AT YOU DOING SO GOOD" while she cries and fully realizes that she is a true masochist, 'twas very hot
Salt Kiss: obviously, the entire "deflowering of Tristan" saga lmao, but ESPECIALLY when Mark is like "Tristan I've fucked you like twice in the last hour I'm not gonna fuck you again" and Tristan goes ":(" only for that sentence to end with ".... so instead you get to eat my ass while I sit on your face, LUCKY YOOOOOOU". I also really love the scene in the mini short "Beg Me" where Mark makes Tristan fuck a pocket pussy (while being all "IF I HAD A WIFE I WOULD LOVE TO WATCH YOU FUCK HER AND IT WOULD BE AMAZING AND GREAT", a fact??? Tristan??? Super????? Misses out on???? When it turns out Mark DOES have a future wife????) before he fucks Tristan and continues to talk about how great it would be if there was a wife here lmao; I also reeeeally love the scene where Tristan and Isolde fuck in that yacht chapel thing. SO. GOOD. SUCH. ANGST.
Obviously, I love many scenes from her Bell Brothers series; the altarfucking scene in Priest; the "holy oil as anal lube" scene, also in Priest; the "let's have anal sex for the first time in a convent" scene in Sinner; the "let's pretend I'm a naughty monk and you're tempting me" outdoor blow job in Saint. All great content. Love it. Amazing.
ANYWAY. NON-SIERRA. Sierra is just the queen of sex scenes, I'm sorry.
I looove the scene in Give Me More by Sara Cate where Hunter, Drake, and Isabel finally have sex after Hunter's admitted that he loves Drake in a romantic manner. It's super hot and also weirdly sweet.
Kristen Callihan's Game On series is REAL GOOD in terms of sex scenes. There's a great scene in The Friend Zone where the heroine is like, taking care of the hero because he's typically been a real caregiver in his family. First of all, she greets him wearing a fake jersey that says "nothing's getting past my tight end". He's a tight end, and I personally think that's love. And then she fingers his ass during to climax and he's super grateful about it because nobody has ever done that before and he felt very loved lmao.
Act Your Age by Eve Dangerfield has SEVERAL very good scenes where they're roleplaying stepfather/stepdaughter stuff, but I think the scene that really sticks out to me remains the first scene where they're in the dark and she doesn't know it's him (and he doesn't know that she doesn't know) and she's going down on him and starts calling him "Daddy" and he like. FREEZES lol.
Reckless by Stella Rhys has an amazing scene where the hero and heroine are boss/employee but also best friends, and he's been helping her get through her realization that her fiance cheated, which has caused a lot of sexual tension... And then in his OFFICE one day, he's just like "use me" and BOOM FRIENDSHIP CORRUPTED. There's also a later scene where he has a very bad work call and she like, undoes her top and is all "you may use my tits to help yourself recover from the manpain you're experiencing right now". Like they're his pacifier. I was... about it.
Minx by Sophie Lark has a scene I read like thrice where the heroine is blowing the hero and then begins fingering him and he's like "nooooow I get why women like to be penetrated". There's also a scene I love where she's like "oh no, I'm on my period" and he goes "DON'T CARE". He might even go down on her.
The All the King's Men Duology by Kennedy Ryan--the scene where he gets her off by sticking his head under her sweatshirt and going to town on her nipples while her coworkers are on the other side of the wall; I mean, I hate to continue... to show my hand.... with this lol, but also the scene where she's blowing him and gives him the ol' bonus pleasure (a finger in his ass)
Mercy by Sara Cate--the pegging scene. That is all.
Possession by Adriana Anders has an amazing scene where the hero kidnaps the heroine (with her consent beforehand) and spit roasts her with his ol' buddy ol' pal. There's also a deleted short about them where he brings in like... three other buddies.... and they all go at her at the same time. AMAZING.
Managed by Kristen Callhan--the whole scene where after they have this really passionate sex he pushes his cum back in her
Lead by Kylie Scott--the scene where they're all "it'll be fine if we just get it out of our systems!!!" and he fucks her on a table while she's wearing like, a FUCKIN BOOT FOR HER BROKEN FOOT LMAO (she broke her foot trying to kick down a door dramatically); and the scene where they have emotional missionary sex and kiss for the first time
Deep by Kylie Scott--the hero finds out the heroine, pregnant with their one night stand baby, has been masturbating a lot and is all "I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR NEEDS FROM NOW ON" and fingers her to orgasm lol
Preferential Treatment by Heather Guerre--the scene where they play chess while he's inside her and she's in his lap facing away from him, and if he comes he loses or something lol
Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid--the scene where Ilya's won player of the year or something so after he drinks vodka while watching Shane finger himself; the "I want to look at you during" sex scene where Ilya uses endearments during and Shane is like "OH NOOOOO HE'S LIKE FALLING IN LOVE WITH ME??? ABORT!!!"; the scene after they actually say I love you. SUCH EMOTIONAL SEX SCENES. Oh wait also the scene where Shane is on the phone with his BFF and Ilya is like "I'm just gonna blow you during carry on".
And in TLG, the "I'm fucking a king in his throne room" scene because sometimes you've just got to fuck the confidence back into someone.

From Abilene Johnson's Simstagram
It's always such a blessing to have a new family at church, even though this time, it's an old friend returning to our congregation. After more than a decade of living in Strangerville, Mark Graham's retirement and his wedding to congregation member Kathryn Evans have brought him back to our little home church - only that it's not so little anymore, and not a home church! So much has changed during those years, but we're delighted to have him, his wife and his sweet little daughter Sharon back in our congregation, and we're looking forward to seeing them every Sunday! And maybe there will even be a baby on the way soon?

one of the funniest patterns i see in ships like these with hawkgirl is that in order to try and 'compete' with hawkman, they just HAVE to give the idea that these ships are this great grand love that's destined to be together. and it NEVER works well for a reason 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you don't have to steal from or attempt to be like the hawkmates, why can't it just be nice & sweet.... why do these writers think the hawkwomen not wanting to be with hawkman is empowering and then proceed to do the exact same thing with destiny with another man? be original!
ik she & j'onn broke up but i 100% understand why modern kendra is just done with relationships (still want a civilian like abilene even though it'll never happen)
edit: i was ranting on twt and so true!

personal, animal death warning for content below the read more
Annie, my ten year old cow (which is getting up there in age but not terribly old just yet) had a nasty fall on xmas eve, and got stuck and mired in mud. we got her out and treated her for cold and shock, but her body seemed fine and we thought she would stand up once she had strength, warmth, and had recovered from the shock (which she was in the process of doing when we finally left her alone on xmas eve)
xmas day, however, she was unable to get up on her back legs. we realized she'd sustained an injury to either her spine or pelvis. there's no coming back from that, especially since generally if something goes wrong there, internal organs have likely taken significant damage. we left her as comfortable as we could leave her, and decided to put her down on boxing day
which brings us to today, boxing day. we put down my annie cow, orphaning her four month old calf in the process. we're going to try to get Alice (her calf) on a diet of milk replacer and grain alongside hay and water today and tomorrow, to try to get her through the next few months without being stunted too badly. we're gonna do everything we can.
im sorry, Annie. after my Rosie cow, you were one of the best cows of all time. a sweet and gentle lady with a pretty face and good disposition. we'll look after your daughters Abilene and Alice as best we can.
here's to a good cow. one of the best i could ever hope to have
we miss you already, Annie girl

The Destruction of Abilene
OC Introductions :)
this WIP (which will be labeled TDOA for brevity) takes place in central/northern Texas in the 1910s. it has a relatively small cast compared to some of my other works. i love an ensemble cast. but without further ado... here they are :)
(wait no, there's an ado. since i am incapable of drawing, each character will come with an actor i've "assigned" to them for now until they get some "official" character art sometime in the future)
okay NOW without further ado :)
Tumblr media
Hank Harrison
the main character of this whole shebang. he really embodies the classic "cold cowboy" character, at least before he begins his development. he would be happy to spend the rest of his life in solitude if it weren't for his sister Clara who's really the only person he cares about. that is, until Jesse comes along (but we'll get to him later). he feels a massive responsibility for the safety of this child which reveals a soft spot within hi, that no one would've thought existed until now. Hank spends the entirety of this story - and his life - haunted by the death of his little brother which he feels responsible for. he carries a lot of trauma from his youth with him but Jesse helps break down his walls and realize that he can move on from the tragedies of his past and soothe his guilty conscience
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(photo cred: LaKeith Stanfield in The Harder They Fall)
Tumblr media
Jesse Sinclair
every grumpy adult man character needs a sweet summer child to tag along! so here he is! but there's something different about this one... ah yes, he's weird. Jesse is simply a strange, unsocialized little boy who's found abandoned by his mother in the aftermath of a huge storm. he's quiet and shy at first but quickly perks up during the journey. he develops an attachment to Hank and begins to see him as a stand-in parental figure. despite this however, he desperately wants to be brought back to his mother. he desires her love more than anything even though she abandoned him. he gets angry if anyone mentions that she wronged him. his sense of morality is strangely concrete for a boy his age. he speaks a lot about the will of God and divine punishment... i told you he was weird
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(photo cred: Keivonn Woodard in The Last of Us)
Tumblr media
Clara Wilson
the younger and considerably more well-adjusted sister of Hank. she's proof that one person can be both a lover and a fighter. she lives with her husband and her mother-in-law who are much wealthier than she ever was in her youth. transitioning from being a farm girl to a wealthy woman was a bumpy ride but she handled it with grace and keeps true to her roots. she tries to keep Hank grounded and help him move on from his trauma while also keeping her own mental well-being in check. after all, they both lost their little brother. she's always ready to jump into the action whenever help is needed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(photo cred: Rosalind Eleazar in The Personal History of David Copperfield)
Tumblr media
David Wilson
Clara's husband! you know that trope of Incredible Girlboss and Man Who Loves Her So Much? yeah this is it right here. he worships Clara. so much so that he puts up with her brother who sort of treats him like garbage. he's well-intentioned to a fault and naive when it comes to the harsh realities of life. but he'll do anything to protect Clara, knowing full well that she can absolutely protect herself. overall, he's just a sweetheart who just wants everyone to get along and live happily ever after
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(photo cred: Julian Sands in A Room With A View)
Tumblr media
Lillian Sinclair
you recognize that surname? no you don't. hush. anyway... Lillian is a young woman who believes that demons are hunting her and punishing her for some reason. she's tortured by her own guilty conscience and believes that God is sending the demons as a sort of divine punishment. all she wants is to be able to live in peace but she doesn't believe that to be possible. deep down, she feels responsible for the death of her husband almost nine years previously. but she has found love again with May and is soothed by her presence alone
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(photo cred: Sophie Wilde in Tom Jones)
Tumblr media
May Carson
the lover of Lillian. a bit rough around the edges with slightly coarse manners but she immediately softens around Lillian. she'll do anything to protect the woman she loves, even if it means doing something unthinkable (what could that be, i wonder? who knows? i don't know... stop looking at me). she was a childhood friend of both Clara and Hank before their lives took a turn for the worse. she's done everything in her power to build a quiet life for herself and for Lillian but when demons come around, she watches everything she's built start to crumble. which, if you couldn't guess, is not something she's going to take lying down
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(photo cred: Natalie Portman in Jane Got A Gun)
Tumblr media
whew, that was a lot. thank you for sticking around until the end! if anyone wants to know anything else about any of these guys, feel free to ask either in the comments or just shoot me a message. i'm happy to ramble about this project for as long as anyone will listen. again, once things get rolling a bit more there will (hopefully) be some character art and i will be able to replace these pictures with more accurate versions!
(side note: if you are/know of someone who i could potentially commission for some art please drop their username in the comments :))

Nanci Griffith performing “Love at the Five and Dime”. ___________________ Love at the Five and Dime Songwriter: Nanci Griffith
Rita was sixteen years, hazel eyes and chestnut hair She made the Woolworth counter shine And Eddie was a sweet romancer and a darn good dancer And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime
And they'd sing "Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime"
Eddie played the steel guitar And his mama cried 'cause he played in the bars And he kept young Rita out late at night So, they married up in Abilene, lost a child in Tennessee And still that love survived
And they'd sing "Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime"
One of the boys in Eddie's band took a shine to Rita's hands So Eddie ran off with the bass man's wife Oh but he was back by June singin' a different tune And sportin' Miss Rita back by his side
And they'd sing "Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime"
Eddie traveled with the barroom band, till arthritis took his hands Now he sells insurance on the side And Rita's got her house to keep She writes dime store novels and a love so sweet They dance to the radio late at night
They still sing "Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime"
As Rita was sixteen years, hazel eyes and chestnut hair She really made the woolworth counter shine And Eddie was a sweet romancer and a darn good dancer And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime
They'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime They'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime

🥀Ataraxia Chapter Four Snippet⛲
Tumblr media
(Gif Not Mine)
Fandom: A/COTAR
Chapter Title: The City Of Starlight
Masterlist found here
(Disclaimer: If you don't like F/eysand or Inner Circle slander this fic isn't for you)
"Didn't expect to see her in a place like this." Mor said her usual artificially sweet tone now more venomous.
"If it weren't for Rhys's money I don't think she would be.
"Why is she useless?" Abilene didn't trust these people, or how well they judged someones character. However, she still wanted to know why they were coming at her with such harsh words
