Spider-Man 2 is here (or almost here), so now what?
As a small note, this blog began as a canon-divergent blog around 6 months before Spider-Man 2 was released, when we had very minimal information about Harry, and incorporates elements from TASM2 and other media. I've become very attached to it and to my interpretation of Harry, thanks to everyone I have written with, so I will not be dropping any plots, nor doing any kind of canon hard reset. This said, elements of Spider-Man 2 will be incorporated. So, how are we doing this?
I will be on hiatus from October 20th to October 27th, to avoid any and all spoilers. It's very likely I won't have time to actually sit and play the game for hours on end for a few days after launch, and I want to avoid spoilers and enjoy the game at my own pace. You can ask for my Discord if we're mutuals, but there's a chance I'll go radio silent on Discord as well until I finish the main story. I'll also post when I've finished it.
There will be no change in characterization for the first few weeks after the game, until I decide what I'm incorporating or not, or even whether I'm incorporating SM2 into my canon or making a separate SM2 verse and having them both coexist in this blog. Hopefully I'll incorporate a lot to be as canon compliant as possible, but this is being written before the game is out. I might love it and want to change very little, or I might want to change a lot. On that note, I'll probably incorporate most if not all elements from Harry's past, but I make no promises until I've played the game and given it some thought.
Any spoiler discussion will be tagged as (( SM2 spoilers )) and any threads set in the Spider-Man 2 timeline will be tagged as (( SM2 spoilers - threads )) for two months, until December 20th. Afterwards, there'll be untagged spoilers.

the only movie to ever actually get Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and realize that the real monster is Victor but also that it's a little more complicated than that, and this isn't even a Frankenstein adaptation. i haven't even seen all of them but this is actually better than every single Frankenstein adaptation. this is a sci-fi movie if it was made in the 1920s, this even often looks like a colorized expressionist film (where the fuck were you people getting "surrealism" from????? this is absurdist, just like every other Lanthimos movie, just bc there's some hazy landscapes that doesn't make it surrealist. it's also probably his single funniest film) from back then. Yorgos Lanthimos's (almost) feminist masterpiece. Bella is a favorite of all time, i love her more than words can explain. i think this honestly might be my second favorite Lanthimos after Dogtooth (although technically this is a spiritual successor to Dogtooth, this is also about the controlling of information by the people in power and what that does to people). also, ik i need to separate art from the artist but i don't think i'll be able to watch TASM2 in the same way ever again tbh. Men (2022) wishes it had the range this does. this is also weirdly the most hopeful Lanthimos movie?

I definitely want to return to this topic, re: ATSV when spoilers can be outside of cuts bc this film is incredible in terms of it being meta commentary in and of itself and the interesting choices it makes on that front in terms of playing with lore and audience expectations, both those intimately familiar with Spidey lore and not, but yeah, MAJOR SPOILERS under the cut this time!
I found it so interesting how in terms of playing with the imagery of iconic moments from the comics, the trailers leaned heavily towards the Death of Gwen Stacy, specifically her falling to her death off a bridge, which most people would be familiar with via the first Raimi film and TASM2 and even NWH even if they've never read a Spidey comic ever, and leading up to the middle, it does the same, but with Miles' father as per the trailers - until there's a crucial moment where a character has to make a choice between saving his girlfriend from falling off a bridge to her death or saving her father from being crushed to death while saving a child, and at this point, I was like, omg I've never seen both Stacy deaths play out this way in terms of an impossible choice, and after that point, Gwen's death doesn't come up again like you would expect, but George Stacy's death becomes THE crux of the conflict, which most casual non-comic fans would be less familiar with, if at all bc it's rarely adapted in adaptations, and even in the case of TASM, the circumstances are wildly different.
But yeah, it's an interesting narrative choice, and honestly, far less played out and less misogynistic than pulling out Gwen's death again, like, let her live lol

my thoughts on the amazing spider man + sequel
the amazing spiderman 1: 7/10 the amazing spiderman 2: 8.5/10
SPOILERS FOR BOTH!!
my first and foremost point: i think the amazing spider-man’s strongest point is its romance. i heard about these movies because i saw clips of the romantic scenes on tiktok, and now having the story and context behind it doesn’t ruin the sweetness of it much at all. peter is literally dependent on gwen; she’s his entire world and that is the truth. it’s nearly 5 hours of film and every major character that isn’t peter is gwen or a villain. like, literally. peter needs friends. his aunt is underdeveloped as hell and he has no friends. oh, and gwen dies.
so i don’t know pretty much anything about marvel comics, but i’m actually so impressed with them killing off gwen in the second movie. i think all those scenes were so incredibly wonderful and sad and i think that entire action sequence isn’t leaving my mind anytime soon. in fact, all the action sequences are really good and they kind of make my head spin... which means they’re good! but i’m not an action movie person so i’ll focus on what i know best: the angst. and there is SO MUCH in the second movie.
peter is so dumb. like genuinely. he has no character development and he’s a static character throughout the entirety of the two films. the ending of tasm2 makes me think that they were gonna make a 3rd movie and make him actually learn to grow without gwen. but like, also i wouldn’t watch that movie because this series is nothing without emma stone. like i understand why they stopped, because what is interesting about this series without gwen? i love the scenes before her death, they are genuinely the best in the entire 5 hour run.
(also, you’ll see that i am not talking about any other characters because there are no other characters. )
comparing the 1st and 2nd: the first is more cliche, but i like it because the main character is a skater boy but also i hate it because he’s like nooo im not good enough for you. but also i heavily dislike how they built up all this stuff about his uncle and then the overarching conflict is just abt some lizard guy. it was clearly built for a sequel though so these are forgivable faults. the romance is also better in this movie
the second is much better in my opinion. it gets so dark, not just literally but the fact that they killed off gwen is crazy. but then also i hate that they killed off gwen because she was the only thing that made peter interesting. it’s freaky and dark but it stays that way and it embraces the darkness and amplifies the angst. i also really liked the backstory about peter’s parents! yes it barely had anything to do with the overarching plot but personally i like it when movies are like that? it makes it feel more like life. this is objectively plot-wise a much worse movie but the experience is like 100% better. like just don’t think about it and it’ll be good.
tldr: andrew garfield and emma stone should’ve just starred in a romance movie and saved us like 4 hours of time. like they should’ve just commited to making this a romance and scrapped the green goblin shit. i feel like i just watched 3 movies with the amount of flashing lights i just sat through

“She was my MJ,” was seriously such a satisfying and heart-warming/-breaking line like… I remember back in 2012-14 that one of the biggest things people were negative about toward The Amazing Spider-Man movies was that MJ wasn’t in them, that they shouldn’t waste time on Gwen when she was just going to die anyway, that people actually wanted Gwen to die and were so excited we were potentially getting MJ in TASM3… so to hear those words come out of Andrew’s mouth all these years later, to get further confirmation (again) that Gwen wasn’t just some girl, that she meant so much to Peter that he still couldn’t move on from her death, that he still can’t even fathom forgiving himself for not being able to save her… yeah, that felt as good as it was sad. Gwen was not, nor was she ever, just a “placeholder” for MJ. She was TASM Peter’s everything.

Congrats to The Amazing Spiderman for getting me care about Peter 3 and Gwen’s relationship in the first 40 minutes of TASM1 than I did about Peter 2 and MJ’s throughout the entire Raimi trilogy

The way I grew up with the Andrew Garfield Spiderman films, and people are now 1) deciding they love his Peter Parker, and yet 2) really REALLY hate the Lizard. Dr Connors deserves MUCH more respect than y’all seem to be giving him, and I don’t believe you can appreciate Andrew’s Peter without realizing that Connors was one of his father figures in TASM. I don’t think you can defend Holland’s Peter having Tony Stark or Dr Strange as father figures, while also discrediting the fact that Dr Connors was one of Andrew’s Peter’s.

Y'all, I'm not even kidding. Tobey does the landing Andrew does in NWH in his own movies so many times but barely one that matches his own in NWH 😭 And Andrew does a mix of Tobey's and Tom's landings in his movies but like one time does he match the NWH one. These men hate me I stfg. Unless I missed landings 🙃

Not that I really want the MCU screwing around with more characters, esp Spidey ones, but I wonder how Tonky stans would react to Norman Osborn if he showed up bc either 'omg they would be friends!!', which hilariously says nothing good about Tonky, or 'omg T*ny would protect bb peter from him!!', as if Tonky wasn't basically Osborn as the evil rich wannabe mentor like in Spidey adaptations, except those adaptations recognize that as villainy, unlike the MCU with Tonky.
you asked this ages ago but hey, we did get norman in the mcu! kinda sorta
i think i've seen people pit stark and (normam) osborn as corporate enemies in fanfiction, which is... something, given that imo oscorp and stark industries are pretty different
osborn and stark have interacted with each other in various comics and certainly don't like each other (for a more in-depth overview, the green goblin's hideout has a pretty extensive article here), but given how much the mcu changed its characters, i think it might be a little different (but who knows!)
i think (in the mcu) if it was just their civilian alter egos, osborn and stark would be wealthy inventors who rubbed elbows with each other at galas, fundraisers, expos, etc. even if osborn didn't know stark was iron man, i don't think they'd be friends. stark's form of sarcasm/biting humor would hurt poor little normie's feelings
norman osborn is interesting as a villain because although his number one nemesis is peter parker, he'd be really cool as stark's nemesis. on one hand, he's peter's best friend's father and, in a way, the creator of spider-man. on the other hand, he's a wealthy inventor - just like stark but like. evil(er)
