Queer youth getting out there and creating the community they need like :')
These GSA students in Washington won one of our 50 States, 50 Grants last year! They used the funds to form a whole network of events and field trips for their GSA club and local LGBTQ+ community groups, so queer youth can meet and learn from one another, learn queer history, and see what IRL queer life and acceptance can look like. 💜
Applications for this year's round of grants are open now until April 1, 2024! If you have an idea for how you might use $10,000 for your own school to support LGBTQ+ students, apply at 50states50grants.org - can't wait to see all your ideas!

Come explore the symbolism in East Asian ceramics! 🫖
During the Teacher Workshop on April 19, we’ll observe objects in our Arts of Asia collection—from storage jars to offering vessels—before reimagining these forms and their decorations using coil-building techniques and self-hardening clay. No prior ceramic experience is necessary.
This program is free—just RSVP: http://bit.ly/40q5E1A

Let’s go back in time, shall we? But nerdy.
I just saw a great question on Reddit about teacher resources for AG/PC. If you are looking for this kinda stuff, please help yourself over on my website (that I desperately need to update with the rest of the teacher guides). You can find them here at the Powderkeg School Project.

Yet another poster!
This one is for the Grade 3 Animal Life Cycles science unit.
I'm trying to make at least one for each main animal group they learn about (mammals, amphibians, fish, reptiles, insects, birds) as well as some outlier animals (kangaroos, some kind of marine mammal, spiders to represent arachnids...)
The goal is to get the idea across that animals have VERY different life cycles from major group to group, but that some groups have similarities (e.g. fish and amphibians have squishy eggs).
If anyone has any good miscellaneous facts about life cycles of animals like isopods, cephalopods, etc, I'm looking to make a "Cool Facts About Life Cycles" poster for miscellaneous facts on marine creatures that aren't fish, mammals, or reptiles.

Teacher MUST HAVES- The Veruca Salt Syndrome
For More #teaching advice and all things classroom related, follow this quirky teacher theSPinnovativeclassroom.org
I don’t know about you, but I love all things classroom and teacher related. Stuff- I’ve got a lot of it. And this carries into my clothing and personal things, too. I wouldn’t say I’m a hoarder. I’m a collector of things. It’s Teacher Confession Time. I have to put myself out there. I need to help others. This blog, my advice, THIS VIDEO…I hope it helps someone. I fear it may be too late for me.
I’ve got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty. I’ve got whozits and whatzits galore. You want thingamabobs? I’ve got twenty! But who cares. Big Deal. I want morrrrrrrrrrre!
I’m an advertiser’s dream. The marketing companies? It’s me they love. Why? Because when they say “it’s a must have” and it’s on a reel, story, or video…I immediately NEED it. And since it’s so easy to just click and buy, I tend to do that.
It’s the “Veruca Salt” Syndrome. I’ve got it, and maybe you do as well. If you know your Charlie and the Chocolate Factory characters, you know Veruca. She sees it, she wants it, she buys it. And don’t tell her no. She. Needs. It. Now.
Hi, my name is DJ. I’m a teacher and parent, and I have Veruca Salt Syndrome.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gotten so many great things that way! Things I love and use every single day. But I’ve also gotten just as many “I don’t need this or these” items.
My advice to everyone is to stop and think before you click a link. Think don’t link. Because in the end, do you really need it? Will you really use it? Just because it works for Miss So-and-So in her adorable video, does not mean it will work for you.
This is fantastic advice. I hope it helps someone out there. And maybe one day I’ll have the willpower to use my own advice more often!
For complete transparency, I wrote this blog post after opening an Amazon package filled with some sort of art supply that I needed for a project I have long forgotten about and have zero time for now. Dragon eyes?? Honestly though, they look super cool. I could probably use them to do a very cool writing activity. Was that what I bought them for? Who knows. I have two million of them now. In the meantime, cross your fingers for me that no more packages are delivered my way.

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ Queer joy for your dash straight from Nashville, Tennessee!
Last year, we awarded $500,000 in grants to schools across the U.S. for student-led projects that support LGBTQ+ youth. Just over a year later, it's time to see how their projects turned out!
Meet one of our 50 States. 50 Grants. 5000 Voices. grantees - this school in Nashville, TN used their grant funds to put on a series of Pride Week events at their school!
We asked their teacher how it went:
"In general, the reaction to our project has been positive. However, some parents and students were not pleased. When Pride Week was announced, we had angry parents coming into our school office or calling angrily. Student reactions were more ignorant, attempting to push boundaries as we laid out what it meant to be respectful. By the end of Pride Week though, some of the same students who voiced hate, participated wholeheartedly, asked good questions, and showed immense growth. This progress in our students shows me that the programming was worthwhile, even for those who pushed back against it." 💜

Can we get a show of hands for those in favor of more art in the classroom… 🙋🙋‍♀️
Our Summer Teacher Institute for K-12 educators is just around the corner, taking place from July 17–20. Through a combination of close-looking, art-making, and reframing, we’ll explore how art can be used to teach students about climate change and inspire them to take action toward environmental justice.
