My god it's been well over a year since I posted anything about the Detective Conan/Case Closed movies even though I have been still watching the series. I just hadn't really sat aside any time to watch the movies in quite some time, I suppose.
Anyway, 5th movie, Countdown to Heaven.
So, to start off, in the current series watch, I'm up to the 580s as far as the regular series goes and I have to say it's refreshing to go back and see the older art style.
Nothing wrong with the newer one, but I admit, I have a love for the older style of the series when it was around the 100s-200s episodes. Some of the scenes had some very split second good animation too and it was well, really nice to see. I love it when animators throw in some fun little fluid animation like that.
So the actual story plot for the movie is...okay. I won't say it was the best thing ever, won't say it was the worst either. I'm glad Gin and Vodka were included because of course it's fun when they toss in the Black Organization characters.
It is a shame they are a little minor, but at least they make a pretty dominate appearance in the 3rd act, so that's something.
Loved more Haibara character development. Seriously if I had to pick one thing I did love about this movie, it was that. I felt like the movie also gave her more of a chance to mourn her sister and I really liked how in the end she was calling her phone just as some way of connecting with her due to feeling loneliness. I about cried, man. That was emotional.
Bad part is that this movie was very heavy on the Detective Boys and while I feel bad saying it, they are kind of my least favorite parts of the series. I'll give it to them, they do get a little better as the story progresses, but since we're back to earlier series with this movie, it was very meh.
Also the movie very oddly felt kind of Conan x Ayumi shippy and if that's your thing, then you might really enjoy this. I, on the hand, am far too loyal to Shinichi x Ran to really want any part of it.
There's also the matter of the story itself feels a little disjointed and I kind of even had a hard time keeping up at first with what was going on when all of the murders were being revealed and how they happened. It was a bit confusing, to be honest.
Anyway, like with 4th movie, it was good, but it felt like it could've very easily been a 3 parter of episodes or something. The start is sluggish and things really don't kick up for some time. But hey, the final part is actiony at least, so you can give it that.
Seriously though, the whole escape from the towers part was really good. I'm glad the movie built up to that at least.
So with that, updated ratings time!
1.) The Fourteenth Target (2nd Movie)
2.) The Time Bombed Skyscraper (1st Movie)
3.) Captured in Her Eyes (4th Movie)
4.) Countdown to Heaven (5th Movie)
5.) The Wizard of the Last Century (3rd Movie)
Yeah, definitely still liked Captured in Her Eyes more. But it still beats The Wizard of the Last Century, so I suppose that's something.
I may have to go back sometime though and rewatch the first four cause I'm curious as to how my feelings would be on a second watch. Perhaps still around the same, who knows?

Loser Round 4: Damian Wayne (DC) vs. Jason Todd (DC)
Tumblr media
A rematch? It's so funny how the bracket turned out this way.
Propaganda under the cut.
Damian Wayne (9-14):
Damian is a kid who was raised as an assassin and because of that when he first appears he has some really messed up ideas of how to prove himself to his father by being aggressive with the criminals they capture and attacking his brother. Because of this people act like he is the most evil character ever and refuse to give him any grace. They make him out to be this awful irredeemable monster who just wants to kill his brother and hurt people. If the fandom isn’t making his out to be The Worst(tm) then they are ignoring his existence all-together. He is a really interesting character who has done some not so great things but he’s grown and learned a lot through various character arcs (as much of an arc as a comic book character can have) and he deserves to be acknowledged for himself and not just as a villain so that people can woobify his brother.
——
HES JUST A LITTLE BABY GUY!!!!! Little baby man raised as an assassin and learning how to be a real person <3. But because he was kind of a dick and also a little stabby early-on, especially to the fandom's main "so sad uwu depressed baby" blorbo (and also he's not white), people treat him like he's satan incarnate
Jason Todd (~12):
Most of the Tumblr fandom likes this guy but if you step outside this website then wham so many people say he got what he deserved as a kid and Batman can't be cool if he's a dad so it's important for Batman to trash-talk his dead child constantly so we can all agree what a bad idea it was. Also wanna highlight that a lot of the records we have from fans at the time were clear they disliked Robin for BEING a child. Like a lot of the little dude characters in this tournament are treated too harshly for making an ugly choice and the fans aren't being understanding or sympathetic that the choice is made by a child character who is immature and not developed and strong enough to make a good choice and stuff. But THIS little dude was specifically hated FOR being a child. People wanted tough loner guy Batman not Batdad and his little buddy. The first Robin would drive back from college and guest star sometimes and be advertised as the Teen Wonder and people were like yeah okay but then Batman actually starts being a single parent for a child with needs and people were like UGH not the BOY Wonder. Today pretty much everywhere you see Batman fans saying Batman is better solo, no kid, it's not realistic to have a kid, a kid shouldn't be in the movies blah. Even if the comics they always find a way to send away the new kid so that Batman never has to parent. So all the Robins are being excluded from the narrative but I think this one is THE symbol of Batman fans hating a child character just for being a child.
-
Robin, Jason Todd, THE hated child character. In the 1980s, Batman comics had become increasingly dark and gritty. According to editor O'Neil himself, the courted audience wasn't kids but 19-40 year old men with disposable income. Batman's child sidekick, Robin, was offensively campy and childish. Fans called him wimpy, annoying, dumb, bratty, etc. Also people complained that Batman acting like an affectionate dad was unmanly and gay. Robin acts violent and emotional and people are like "ew he's so childish and emotional"—and then Batman literally acts just as murderously and emotionally within literally the same exact story and people are like "wow he's so dark and tortured". So in 1988 (after brutalizing Batgirl to get rid of her for being too bright and nice and kid-friendly), DC held a paid poll for fans to vote for Robin to live or die. O'Neil claims he heard a fan (a grown man with a dayjob as a lawyer) programmed a phone to spam kill votes. One fanguy claimed that he sold his Mercedes to buy kill votes (probably an exaggeration but still). By less than 1% margin, the vote decided to kill Robin in a spectacularly violent way. Anyway the 1989 Batman movie brought in a huge wave of new child comicbook fans who liked the new Robin (a very cool teenage high school Robin with a driver's license and a girlfriend), and DC started a separate Robin-less Batman series called Legends of the Dark Knight to make the anti-Robin writers and fans happy. But to this day, many fans agree it was a good idea to kill off the other Robin so that his foolish death reminds other characters to never be childish and stupid again. Bonus: the current Robin (usually a traumatized 10-year-old) has also been facing some pretty loud hatred for over 15 years.

Based on the sci-fi fandoms I've had interactions with, here's how I think about their level of chillness.
Star Trek: Honestly? A very mixed bag. Sometimes Star Trek fans will be the most chill people on the face of the planet, and sometimes they're really annoying. Asking their opinions about Discovery is a good way of finding out which category they're in.
Star Wars: Absolutely the worst. Zero chill. Sometimes they vindicate how I felt in 2012 when I actively wanted for the franchise to die out.
Farscape: Genuinely the most chill fandom I've ever encountered. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience with a Farscape fan.
Stargate: These guys had varying levels of chill back in 2009 or so when Universe was first being aired and when Beckett being killed off on Atlantis was still a hot button issue, but they've chilled out a lot since then. The lack of new content has done them some good.
Battlestar Galactica: Pretty much the same as Stargate fans because they didn't have a lot of chill back in '09 or so because the ending was so contentious, but have chilled out a lot since then.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Out of the sci-fi comedy fandoms, this one has the least chill. They're still okay most of the time, but they can be a bit annoying sometimes.
3rd Rock from the Sun: Chill, but this is probably somewhat related to how small the fandom is.
Resident Alien: From what I've seen, they're chill.
Red Dwarf: Also chill.
Starship Troopers: Honestly, these guys can go either way, too. Some of them lack chill because they're fans of the Robert Heinlein book and don't like that the movie parodied it, and sometimes they're a bit dense and think the movie is nudge nudge, wink wink real talk. The more chill ones kinda know what the movie's about though and actively prefer it to the book.
Ender's Game: How chill these guys are is an inverse correlation of how much they agree with Orson Scott Card.
Deus Ex: Chill. The JC Denton memes are great.
Doctor Who: Lacked chill in the SuperWhoLock days, and now it's a mixed bag on whether or not they'll be chill or not.

Heya Kasey! If you wanna and have the time I was wondering if you have any tickle headcannons for hunter from the owl house? He’s such a silly and sweet lil goober and I wanna hear your thoughts if you have any? I hope you have a wonderful day! 💙🫂
Tumblr media
🌕🐺Hunter Tkl Headcanons🐦🌟
~Hi Pocky! Ehehehe I’ve been waiting for someone to request Hunter! The boyo’s of my favorite TOH scrimbles to wreck (*ᴗ͈ ˬ ᴗ͈ )ꕤ*. So yeah I’ve definitely got some thoughts- And thank you! May your day be filled with wonderful thoughts and lots of sweets! ♡ And to the anon, I included more teases than I usually would, just for you. Thanks for the requests!~
Tumblr media
General:
I’m pretty sure the entire fandom can agree that he gives STRONG lee vibes.
He enjoys making his friends laugh sometimes, though, so I’m going heavy lee-leaning switch.
Can only say the t-word on rare occasions. More often than not, it’s adorable stuttering and blushes until you get the message.
With some proper motivation, he can admit that he likes it. It just flusters the hell out of him, so use this knowledge sparingly.
Lee:
SUCH a cute lee, no question
He blushes like crazy, squirms and wriggles like a worm on a hook, squeaks and hiccups if you get him going, just- ‎°。⋆♡‧₊˚
He gets in a lee mood pretty frequently, and sometimes asks for what he wants. Usually he’ll go to Willow for, but Luz and Gus are close runners-up.
When he can’t ask, he’ll try his very hardest to provoke or tease his friends into helping.
Sassing people, sitting with his arms behind his head, slouching just right so his shirt slides up, and if he’s really gutsy, poking their sides. With these goobers, it works nine times outta ten.
If you don’t wanna get kicked/elbowed in the face, I recommend pinning him. Squirmy flailer boyo
Worst spot is his ribs. Will squeal, snort, thrash and blush like it’s nobody’s business.
Melt spots are his scars. If it’s someone he trusts and is comfortable with, he loves gentle traces (and kisses from Willow ( ,,^ᴗ^,, )) Airy giggles, gets all sleepy. If he’s having problems falling asleep, some light scar tickles will knock him right out.
Ler:
A soft ler for sure. He can go rougher, but he normally prefers not to.
It’s pretty easy to fluster him. Instant compliance, telling him to not stop/keep going, holding your arms up around him, asking him to do it over and over again-
Yeah, he’ll be a blushy boy in no time
He can tease though. It's a bit rare, but he tries.
"Oh, this tickles? Good, I was worried it wasn't working."
"You blush reeeeeeally hard when I squeeze here. It must tickle so much!"
"You've got a pretty cute laugh, ya know. Think I'll have to have you share more often..."
"I don't know why you don't like this adorable belly. It's so cute and squishy and ticklish; what's not to love?"
"You're squirming a lot, but you haven't told me to stop once. You like this a whole lot, don't you?"
"Hmm? Sorry, it's hard to understand you with all that giggling. Try again~"
This boy cannot ask to tickle anyone. Asking to receive is hard enough, but asking to give? Yeah, good luck-
Willow can normally pick up on his ler moods, and if she’s feeling it, she’ll offer her help
He’s super mindful of boundaries. Stops the moment you say to, checks in every once in a while to make sure you’re still having fun
Doesn’t normally pin unless you’re a massive squirmer. He doesn’t mind, just scared of pushing boundaries
Super loving aftercare. Sleepy cuddles and movies for sure. Hot chocolate, tea or coffee (whichever you prefer), and some fluffy blankets. Can give a pretty relaxing shoulder massage if you ask.

gonna stick these two together since they're both for eddy
1. my first impression of him: as a kid i'm sure i thought he was a real jerk. but like i did for edd i'll go based off of my impression when i was first in the fandom years back. i remember feeling some type of way about eddy, especially in the later seasons. i was way more annoyed and troubled by the unnecessarily asshole-ish stuff he did. now i just find it all hilarious and feel sorry for him. these days i'm an eddy apologist through and through. there's not a negative trait in him that i can't come up with an excuse for and/or find the humor in. oh i also remember liking him mostly bc he was cute with edd and i love edd. but over time....
2. when i truly started to like him: my opinion of him became more nuanced until it turned into what it is now which is that of a full blown stan. when i became jaded by the dedicated edd fandom it probably allowed room for eddy to infect my already vulnerable brain.
4. how many people i ship him with: really only edd. any time i think of him with someone else it's basically as a joke/for the novelty. i genuinely can't think of someone else i'd seriously ship him with.
6. my least favorite ship with him: i can't say there are any that i think about enough to dislike. i'm pretty unwavering in my opinion that he's like a 5.5 on the kinsey scale, so putting him in straight ships doesn't do much for me, other than maybe provide an opportunity to explore another aspect of his character.
7. a quote from him that i remember: "my brother was a whiz at chewin' ice cubes." no idea what that's supposed to mean but it's absurdly funny.
8.my favorite outfit of his: my favorite is the yellow hoodie but of course i have to include others
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. my least favorite outfit of his: these greasy suit jackets and ties are hilariously awful. this must be how his dad dresses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. describe the character in one sentence: it's so obvious but "a little childhood trauma builds character."
11. the first thing i think about when i think of eddy: slurs. and this image
Tumblr media
12. sexuality hc: gaaaaaaaaaaaay
18. what do i think he was like as a (younger) kid: i think little eddy was very curious and even more sponge-like than most kids. gullible, as anyone is at that age. very sensitive and sincere until he was programmed into seeing those things as flaws and weaknesses by the toxically masculine figures in his life.
25. when did he act the most out of character: i always think about the xmas special. it makes me wonder what would've happened if he hadn't immediately been tempted by santa's giant sack.
26. when do i think he was being most himself: i guess at the conclusion of bps?? if i recall, it was you @gettingfrilly who said he feels the most out of character AND most himself at the end of bps and i agree. eddy's not the apologizing type so it's more meaningful when he says he's sorry and comes off as uncanny. the fact that he knew the other shoe was gonna drop at some point is so sad lol. letting down the facade obviously reveals his true self and simultaneously seems ooc cuz his character is largely a front.
28. the most unnecessary thing he ever did: lbr most of the shit he did in the show was unnecessary. it's hard to pick the worst of all, but i'll go with the swamp prank. i know it's in his blood, but damn dog. edd was already on the brink of collapse by that point, so pretending to die a horrific death for the second time in one already awful day wasn't his brightest idea. but eddy is nihilistic as hell, especially during the final stretch of the series and into the movie so it comes as no real surprise.

Even I don’t know what this post is about and there’s probably no way for me to say this without sounding a little pretentious and for that I apologize but here’s some Norman meta analysis.
In terms of the Great Raimi Norman Discussion, something I thank a god I don’t believe in every day hasn’t yet escalated to Discourse(tm), among the things I wish weren’t a factor alongside the entire movie of NWH is the entire concept of a character being irredeemable. In my personal opinion, redemption is change. There is no point at which a person is not capable of some sort of positive change, so there’s no point where someone is irredeemable. This is simplifying for the sake of brevity, but it gets my point across.
However by the standards of larger fandom, there tends to be a collection of specific things that label a character irredeemable. These tend to be bigotry of most if not any form, any form of abuse, and sexual violence.
Raimi Norman managed to tick off all three.
Taking into account the authorial intent, Norman is very much meant to be sexist, an emotionally abusive parent, and I personally believe it’s very very likely that the comment the Goblin made towards MJ at the end of the first movie was intended to be a rape threat, especially taking into account him ogling her earlier in the movie.
The thing that tends to occur with those three topics in media is that they feel too real and too close to home and connect too much with people’s personal experiences. This can result a lot in people who generally like or enjoy a character with those traits sort of feeling the need to minimize, deny, or entirely avoid the topic of those things because it can feel like a reflection on their personal character to like a character who is those things or make them feel like they can’t enjoy the traits of those characters that they do enjoy. Norman’s behavior with MJ isn’t acknowledging and people tend to swing towards saying Norman was a bad parent or a neglectful parent because the word Abusive is a point of no return for most people when it shouldn’t be.
This is incorrect and anyone who tries to make you feel bad for this is incorrect. Personal preferences aren’t morality.
I broadly do not enjoy this for all the prior stated reasons but also because I feel this is also a root cause for a lot of Good Old Fashioned Norman Woobification. With denying these topics, in particular his child abuse and sexism because I’m aware the third is debatable, people end up implicitly taking the responsibility he has for his actions as a 57 year old man who made all his decisions on his own away from him or otherwise minimizing what he did or trying to make excuses, once again because modern fandom morality is a plague and people think any of the above means they can’t like a character.
And even besides that, I personally feel that to perform meaningful analysis of his character you have to be willing to embrace and openly acknowledge the very shitty things he does all on his own of his own agency. That sort of full understanding of a character is pretty necessary. You’re able to come to more complete and more defendable positions. And while I, me, tumblr user hawkogurl might not agree with them, they’re gonna be better developed. I don’t need to agree with them. I believe exposing myself to opinions I don’t agree with is good for me. It prevents the development of an echo chamber.
I continue to have no clue what I’m saying with this post so I’m gonna stop here. Because I’ll feel weird if I don’t say it, this post isn’t even directed at anyone specifically, we’ve come a long way from 2021 NWH era fandom and most people tend to be willing to acknowledge he’s kind of the worst and I don’t need to agree with you to respect you.

Yo, your art is sick! It's fucked up in the best kind of way! Also I remember that era of projecting onto Alma, I was very much the same when I first saw Encanto. But here's the thing. She gave birth three times over, watched her home be ravaged and burned to the ground by bandits, had to walk in the middle of the jungle after giving birth three times away from the only place she's known whilst carrying said three babies, only to have the love of her life slaughtered in front of her because he thought it a good idea to sacrifice himself AND BECAME THE LEADER OF A TOWN AND DEAL WITH A MAGICAL FUCKING HOUSE ALL IN THE SPAN OF 24 HOURS ALL WHILST MAINTAINING THE IMAGE THAT SHE HAS HER SHIT TOGETHER AND KNOWS WHAT TO DO. Alma may not be my favourite character and yes, she doesn't get it right, but she is far from being the villain.
thank you!
I got jumpscared for a hot minute because I thought you were talking about alma mahler (whom I have posted about in the past) before I realized you were talking about the encanto character lmao
but I agree! one of the reasons why it’s one of my favorite disney movies is because it explores family issues in such a dynamic and nuanced way, and while her actions were damaging to the family, they ultimately came from a place of love for them and for her community. the fact that the movie acknowledged this while also addressing how she hurt her family, even with good intentions, was something I really appreciated, and I’m sure a lot of other people did as well.
I was mainly laughing at how, back when the fandom was in its peak, people blew her character WAY out of proportion to how it was written in the movie- for instance, a common hc I often saw was that she forced bruno out or disowned him, while in the movie, he left on his own. while the rest of the town ostracized him for his predictions, his family readily accepted him back, suggesting that they were more hurt by the fact that he left the family without any explanation than by anything he may have predicted. (and from alma’s perspective, if she viewed the family’s duty was to serve the town, it must have been even more hurtful to her if he just left without saying why.) so, both characters are pretty nuanced and complicated, but I saw a lot of fandom hcs and posts that characterized alma as everything from physically abusive to homophobic (with regard to the popular headcanons that bruno, mirabel, and isabela were lgbt). when like, as you said, she’s a deeply flawed person, but she never was as bad as a lot of people made her out to be.
I think what happened there was, as “encanto” is a story about, among other things, familial trauma, people wanted to explore their own familial trauma with these characters because they related to them. it’s a big cast of characters who are all related, so obviously you’re going to find one you connect with (and personally, I saw a lot of myself in mirabel, which is part of why I like the movie so much). or maybe, as fandom does, people just wanted to come up with stories, headcanons, and character dynamics with this big cast of characters they liked. and because a lot of people viewed alma as the source of the family’s trauma (which she sort of was), she became an avatar for all the traumatic things people wanted to explore through those stories, such as abuse or bigotry, even if she may not have displayed those concepts in canon.
overall, at the end of the day, I don’t think there’s anything right or wrong with people interpreting media the way they do; that’s what media is for, and if someone casting alma madrigal as a terrible person helps them work out their own issues, that’s great; she’s a fictional character, so there’s no harm done to anyone. I just think it’s sort of funny how a whole fandom saw this one fictional old lady and collectively decided she was the Worst.

YOU...Astral Senpai ambassador. Do da character ask right now this instant
Yes, homie! What I love about them: At first Astral was just a nice eye-candy for me. I love his eyes the most (I think animators did too). He expressed so much by just staring. I was at one point fascinated by Astral being so different even compared to other people in Astral world. I do dig the fact, that even though you spent a lot of time with him in a show, but he's still left mysterious. Like, he's an embasador, but his powers are quite something else. He's cold and calculative and very smrt. I do like smart people, they fascinate me with big smart words, I guess. His character growth is pretty nice and I do like that he knows how to pull certain strings. Be that in the begginig with opposite game or at the end. A big brain move, in my opinion, knowing that Yuma seemed tired of dueling and in no way would agreed to another one. So yeah, I WILL ERASE BARIAN WORLD, so lets duel. He left him with no room for a "no". Is it mean? Hell yeah. But that's a part of him being a calculative smart ass. What I hate about them: Honestly, the inconsistency of "the number bestowed a knowledge to him about human world" stuff. It felt a bit random. I know its canonical, but it's just personal pet-peeve Favorite Moment/Quote: *Slaps entire Zexal anime* From the sub: -What does Astral says about it? -I think Yuma is an idiot What I would like to see more focus on: On Astral's past, honestly. I know he was mostly emotionless weapon, but I would love to know more what he was doing. He was not only aware about helf of numbers being on Earth, but also piece of him missing. Would it affect him? What was that part of him originally? A number? Like there is so much I would like to know And uncover mystery about his eyes. Is his eye white because yuma is missing? Like a canonical YES or NUH What I would like to see less focus on: Eh, hard to answer. I do like him interracting with other people (Shark and Kite) even confronting Barians is interesting. He barely spoken to Yuma's frineds and I would kept it that way. That bunch is worst thing in whole ass anime and don't want to even look at Ghost boi Favorite pairing with: Mhhhhhh. Hurd to answer too, mostly because I ship him with several people for different reason. I do like me old classic Keyshipping, cause it's a dumbass with a smartass. yuma seems like the fire in the relationship - brining the warmth, the outgoing energy. The elemnt of physical love and affection. While Astral is cool, chill the movie night kind of mood. He would be the one to calm down the tired partner and bring them a blanket And taintedshipping, because of evil and... not evil pairing. the opposites? Because Astral is ambiguous being and more of a "following rules' kind of ghost. I can see Mist starting shit and Astral would had to deal with that. Yet they both enjoy this still. Mist would appreciate his back cowered and Astral would just love the "lively" attitude and being on edge, A thrill that he misses. I do like my ship too c: Favorite friendship: Also with Yuma. Their interraction about "takoyaki" will forever stay as BEST represantation of how my two last braincells interract XD And they do give out an impression of having fun together. They do genuinely care. NOTP: The random ones. Because this fandom slaps people together even if makes no sense. I guess one of them is Tori and Astral. Mostly because it just makes no sense to me. They spoken ONCE. Favorite headcanon: Astral is a ethereal robot\weapon. Obviously he's not a human and he's not of a human's soul origin. He was made for a specific thing. So he's learning AI kinda deal, only in a form of a higher state of... soul thing. That's probably why chaos is deadly to him - because he never was a human to house one.

irresistible-revolution replied to this post:
holy shit. i haven't watched the show (yet) and thus haven't ventured into the tags but i've seen sooo many bad-faith posts about the show randomly cross my dash, and the racism...whew the racism
Yeah, exactly.
The racism is both predictable and mind-boggling. Ismael Cruz Córdova has talked about how his messages are pretty much 24/7 racism, we've all seen it, and I think to some extent the sheer scale and aggressiveness of the worst racist vitriol has let the less obvious stuff pass.
I'm thinking of people who are of course opposed to the treatment of the POC in the show, they don't condone it at all!!! but it seems like every fucking time people try to address the fandom racism, they find some way to make it about ethics in Tolkien adaptation how there are totally legitimate objections independent of that and theirs are XYZ and the show is the WORST and blahblahblah.
They'll make graphics about all the issues "fandom" has with the show that put "racist fans" in small print in a corner while the fidelity issues are all front and center, as if the racism wasn't a huge and inescapable part of the general vitriol. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of how many people who were ostensibly opposed to the racist abuse directed at, say, Kelly Marie Tran after TLJ were also constitutionally incapable of ever acknowledging it or responding to anything about it without making it about how much they hate Rose, how she's the worst SW character ever, blahblahblah, sometimes in direct reply to Kelly Marie Tran herself.
And this inability to ever engage with fandom racism without either minimizing its significance or trying to derail the discussions seems ... honestly, pretty racist also! All the more because they incessantly put their shit in the main tags (and, as in this case, will use multiple main tags to ensure that everyone sees it). But if they don't support sending racial slurs to the cast and don't scream about woke culture defiling the purity of Tolkien's vision, it's supposed to be okay or something.
I also, unsurprisingly, agree about how much of the discourse is extremely bad faith in addition.
It's like, I get being frustrated by both big-picture issues and the handling of some specific details in adaptation and seeing connections between those and to genuinely substantial issues in adaptation or media. I've been grumping about matters great and small in the LOTR fillms for nearly 20 years!
But there's so much that's, as you say, very bad faith—active misrepresentation of what happens in the show, assumptions about what's going to happen used to condemn the show even when they're wrong, without the slightest acknowledgment afterwards, matters of personal taste treated as objective measures of quality (special subtype: personal taste that amounts to "but in the movies..."), and a ton of misrepresentation of what Tolkien wrote in the first place.
None of this is to say there aren't valid criticisms to make or that there's no place to make them (though that place is not the main fandom tags IMO). It's a matter of what criticisms are most often made and how reasonable they are, the ways in which they're made (so much of the rage over Elves not having long, straight hair is concentrated on Arondir, how mysterious), and when they're made (not every conversation, especially conversations about actual bigotry directed at actual human beings, needs to involve personal gripes about, idk, costuming or whatever).
/end rant

for the violence ask… 8/9/10
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
I think it's an easy answer to say Peter Parker but objectively, the majority of the fandom has a very fanon collective idea about who he is/what role he feels in a narrative that makes it feel like there are two distinct Peters that are running around in the tag. (Which is interesting, because Wade's character I think is pretty consistently written - the level of nuance differs, but the core of him is there, and I think it's because he's baseline a pretty easy character to understand while Peter is not since who he says he is/who he is contrats)
It's obviously mostly because comic canon + the three movie canons do not line up well the more recent they are, and the most recent converts are people who got into the TH movies, which are probably the least accurate/worst representation of Peter as a character. I think that writing him as a nice, sweetheart, infantile twink definitely fulfills a very classic yaoi fantasy and I understand why it exists, but at that point it's so disconnected from source it feels like a wade wilson/oc work that's been telephoned across the expanse of the fandom degrading Peter's core character further with every new iteration.
9. worst part of canon
I've said this once, I've said this a thousand times, but the ableism that exists within the comic universe to the degree that everyone that sees Wade and his scars reacts like it's the worst thing they've ever seen is not only unrealistic but also weird in canon context.
1) this is a world that has mutants, aliens, and meta-species and many canon characters have mutations or species traits that go outside the norm and they don't receive the same level of universal disgust
2) disability education! mutant rights are marvel's talking point for real world racism/ableism so why can mutants who are made of stone get humane treatment from fellow mutants but wade...does not? it's weird? it doesn't make any sense?
3) he literally does not look that bad (this is depending on author/artist. I saw someone say once that there are three Wades, horror Wade, action Wade, and romance Wade and depending on the comic plot line, his scars get worse to better respectively.) As someone who writes for this fandom I can confirm that there are many people who are attracted to Wade Wilson lol. It just does not. Make. Sense. To. Me. It's just ableism, plain and simple.
It just really bothers me. I really think comics are so based on conventional standards (I.E. every superhero is traditionally beautiful, body diversity doesn't exist, etc.) that when a character like Wade exists who is not conventional but still fits the body standards + the base of G.I. Joe it just doesn't make sense that he would receive the level of blatant ableism from every person he ever interacts with. I think he would get more! Is it what I'm saying.
10. worst part of fanon
I mean, where do we really start. (It's the babygirlification of Wade Wilson) it makes writing any level of nuance in their relationship very one-sided because you know the fans will literally agree with anything Wade does and contrast it with degrading and dehumanizing anything Peter does. Wade's actions are always justifiable because (vague hand wave in the direction of the babygirlification of serial killers) I think it bothers me so much because there are two people in this relationship and one of them is a canonical serial killer and one of them is a weird guy with a bad personality. I think they both suck, but if only one of them gets flack then it really makes the entire concept of them profoundly unfun.

Say what you will about Qui-Gon - and fandom definitely has a lot to say about him, most of it unfounded by the source material and exaggerated as all hell based on misinformation and a desire for Obi-Wan whump - but if you look at the actual books and the movie without bad faith blinders on, there's no denying that he loves Obi-Wan so very much. He's pretty bad at outright saying it, and Obi-Wan is insecure enough that he often tends to assume the worst, so there's plenty of miscommunication between them especially at first, but Qui-Gon does love him. A lot. And tries to be better for him, to work past the untreated trauma that Xanatos gave him.
He's obviously not prefect, and quite often it's like "please, just talk to each other! It'd clear up so much so fast!", but this trend of Qui-Gon being cold and dismissive of Obi-Wan is just objectively wrong. I know you've never read the books, and am unsure if you've watched The Phantom Menace, but just. The look he gives Obi-Wan as he's dying, so full of love and affection as he tenderly brushes his cheek as his last action. The way he talks about Obi-Wan in the books, awkward and fumbling and scared of screwing things up but still so willing to try, because Obi-Wan is worth it to him. Whatever faults he has, however he's screwed up, the one thing he did not do was fail to wholeheartedly love Obi-Wan.
And personally I find that makes Obi-Wan's heartbreak over losing Qui-Gon even more impactful. Sure it's sad if he's mourning someone who didn't care back, but to lose someone who was basically his parent and who genuinely loved and cared for him? To have him die in his arms and, judging by the look on his face, open up the training bond to send him all the love that he didn't have the breath to say? It would have been gutting. That kind of loss is much more devastating (to me, at least). And given some of the adopted parent-child feelings you've given Shisui in the past, I feel like it'd be more interesting to you too? Might be off the mark on that though, in which case, sorry for the unprompted... character assessment? Or whatever this is. Midnight thoughts I thought you might be interested and wanted to share.
Oh hello! I'm gonna assume this is prompted by my tag that says something along the lines of "qui-gon critical because I can't miss a chance to take a shot?"
I picked 'critical' instead of 'bashing' or even any of the 'bad parent'/'A+ parenting' tags because I'm deffo not gonna just toss in a load of salt about qui-gon being a useless cold bastard haha, no it's more like you said about the sheer lack of communication and also the frankly terrible rollercoaster of Obi-wan's padawan years. I agree that there was a great deal of love and care between Qui-gon and Obi-wan but they're a classic case of the problems in Yoda's damned lineage... I genuinely think it would kill them all, on the damned SPOT, to try and say the word "love" aloud
Like.... EVERYONE GO TO THERAPY and also family counseling whilst you're at it
Qui-Gon is just.... his relationship with Obi-wan just had So. Many. Moments. And you want to just... just say sorry, say that he's doing well, say that you're trying, say that you trust him and you're proud and you'll be there. Oh, you can't because that's attachment? Hate to break it to you, IDIOTS, but avoiding saying the words that match the fucking actions - as if the Darkside is waiting to pounce from above - is the same as covering your face and thinking you'll win at hide-and-seek.... deluded!
ANYWAY sorry I got a bit passionate there, I like to pick up canon's nonsense ideas about emotional constipation, nod sagely, and then toss them in a wood chipper :)
There won't be qui-gon bashing - just judging, which no one is safe from - since I can't even commit to bashing Kylo Ren and him I really do hate 😂
And you're not off the mark at all, Anon, you've got my number because.... yeah, I can never ever resist platonic feels and Obi-wan's relationship with Anakin especially is going be a tear-jerker of tenderness

Do you have a favourite version of Leon, or a close second to RE4R? I really loved his design and and character depiction in Vendetta. He seemed a lot more fleshed out and was overall just really enjoyable to watch imo!
this is a super interesting question that I've never really thought about before.
I would probably say that I don't have a favorite version of Leon per se, so much as I appreciate it when installments actually follow the emotional throughline for his character.
every RE character has a problem of an inconsistent characterization, to a certain extent, because the writing teams at Division 1 change from installment to installment. the reason why RE2make to RE4make feels so coherent is because it was literally the exact same team both times, which almost never happens. in the OG canon, the writers for RE4 were not the same writers as Damnation, and those guys did not write RE6, etc.
the only version of Leon that I straight-up did not like was Degeneration, and I'm pretty sure the vast majority of the fandom agrees with me on that. and, I've been over this before -- I get it; I understand why Degeneration was such a shitshow. but that doesn't absolve it.
but like. I'm very critical of Damnation Leon, for example, because he's so fucking annoying in that movie, because Capcom went real hard swinging the pendulum in the opposite direction after Degeneration. Leon is literally the worst part of Damnation; he ruins every single scene he's in. if you were to remove him from that movie, the entire movie would be much better off for it and would probably be able to stand on its own as a genuinely good film. it would've done a wonderful service to Ada's character, too, because she's mostly fantastic in that film -- but Leon's presence drags her down, because it always does.
but even Damnation has moments of brilliance with him -- particularly, the very beginning and the very end. (the sarcastic nod he gives JD when he's tied to the chair is also probably one of my most favorite Leon reaction moments ever, too -- on par with his tantrum at Chris in Vendetta.) his anger and frustration at the US government is so on point and finally exposes just how little he trusts them and how stuck he feels. that was something that was missing from OG RE4 (for, again, understandable reasons), so it was really great to have that put out in the open and expressed.
same thing with RE6. there are moments in RE6 when Leon is absolutely insufferable and/or feels like a scene was crafted without the intention of even putting him in it, so he's just kind of there -- but there's some really brilliant moments with him. his reunion with Sherry will always be a stand-out moment for him, and the entire Tall Oaks section with him being The Professional(TM) to Helena's rookie is excellent, too, and shows real character progression from his own rookie days in RE2.
and Infinite Darkness -- holy shit, his characterization is all over the place in that series. it's like he's three different characters rolled up into one, and he just bounces wildly back and forth between who he's meant to be for any given scene. but that scene of him and Jason in that shitty apartment, sitting across from each other and talking about treason, and then Leon just hauls off and shoots him in the heart -- that is one of the single best scenes in the entire Resident Evil series, period. not only is Leon's character perfect in that scene, but everything about the visual storytelling there was on point to create the perfect amount of tension.
but now that I'm thinking about it -- you're right, in that Vendetta is probably the best example of consistently good characterization that he has. Vendetta doesn't stray or get distracted at any point when it comes to Leon's character, and it follows his emotional throughline perfectly. the only issue with Vendetta is that he's so steeped in his misery that he almost comes off as mean-spirited sometimes, when that's really not who he is.

Hey. I have a stereo type of rwde and I want to prove it that it's not true. So if you can, what do you like about rwby and why do you still watch it? and no pointing out is flaws and saying what could have been done better.
Thanks for asking! I relish the challenge.
So RWDE, much like the main fandom, is made up of people with different views. For every Adam stan in RWDE, there's another who doesn't like him. For every person who hates Team RWBY, another loves them, etc.
To answer the second question, I have a very large investment in RWBY. I started watching just before Volume 2, around the time the Production Diaries were coming out, and I was hooked. While most members of RWDE are different, I think most of them agree that either now or in the past, they did like RWBY.
You can sort of picture it the same way some people that are huge Star Wars fans do not like the sequel trilogy, but may still love watching The Mandalorian or Andor. It's not as straightforward as "I hate all of Star Wars, it's all shit" or "I love every single Star Wars show, they're all 10/10". The same goes for RWBY.
I loved Volumes 1 and 2. This is regardless of its quality. Meaning even if Volume 1 is considered the worst Volume by most people, I still love watching it. A lot of it is nostalgia yes, and I may give reasons why I prefer them over newer Volumes, but in the end it's my subjective experience. Ask anyone which Volume is their favourite and you'll get wildly different answers with different reasons for each.
I do not like the more recent Volumes, but I really enjoyed the manga: the first by Shirow Miwa, the official by Bunta Kinami, and all the anthologies. I have physical copies of all of them, save for the JNPR anthology. And I think it's because one of my favourite things about RWBY is seeing other people's interpretations of it, whether in official content or not.
I loved Mark's SLVR trailers. I love watching fan animations like R.U.B.Y. and DARK. I watch a lot of RWBY reactor channels, from channels who started with RWBY and grew big like All Ages Of Geek, to hidden but lost gems like Charfox, and I know Volume 1 pretty much from heart just from watching so many reactors starting the show. And every time I watch them react to Players and Pieces and Ruby slingshots herself towards the Nevermore, I get the same chills I got when I first watched it on my own. I enjoy watching other people enjoy RWBY.
I remember a time where JACOneManBand was a growing RWBY YouTuber, who at the time was the only other person besides MurderOfBirds making RWBY content on YouTube, and playing his RWBY Theory and RWBY Hunger Games videos in the background while I was drawing. Could you imagine a time where there were only TWO RWBY YouTubers? I fuckin' remember. It was such a fun time - we barely knew anything about Remnant, and theory/lore videos were the fandom's lifeblood. Back then, there was no RWDE. There was only the RWBY Fandom, and we were all happy to be a part of it.
Yes, believe it or not, there was a time where YouTube wasn't filled with RWBY critique and rewrite videos, and I loved it! I loved it when everyone could just enjoy the show and make videos talking about its lore, make OCs for it and make their own fan animations. It was a simple, innocent time where we placed full trust in RWBY and into Rooster Teeth.
So really, if you ask me, when someone from anti-RWDE says that RWDE hates RWBY, it barely scratches the truth. Just because I don't enjoy the new, canon Volumes, doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading RWBY manga, or watching reactions, or reading fan theories, or looking at fanart. I enjoy all of those things, things that are so much wider beyond the scope of the canon show - I just don't like the canon show's current Volumes.
Back to the Star Wars analogy. Someone can not like Episode 9 or even the whole sequel trilogy, but you know what? They can love the original trilogy, the prequels, The Mandalorian, Andor, the Solo movie, Rogue One, going to Star Wars fan conventions, reading Star Wars comics, cosplaying as a stormtrooper, etc.
And if they're a real fan, they would have no problems letting others enjoy things that they don't, and have no problems letting others not enjoy things that they do. Does that make them a fake fan, or a hater? Absolutely not! To think so is to have an incredibly narrow view of what being a "fan" means, and the same goes for RWBY.
I still watch RWBY because I am still a fan of RWBY as a franchise; I'm just not a fan of the main show. That may be hard to really grasp, but that's how it goes - the Volumes are the main reason the RWBY fandom keeps going, but they aren't the be-all and end-all of things to love about RWBY.
So yeah. I am only a part of RWDE because people like me are pressured to use a specific hashtag, away from the larger community. But that is a label that other people have imposed on us. I consider myself a RWBY fan, and nothing anyone can say about my opinions or my character can change that. They may not like it, but that's what I and a lot of other people are.
And the sooner they acknowledge that and we see eye-to-eye, that we all can like and dislike what we want and not be treated as unknowable aliens, dangerous outsiders or some stupid secret conspiracy trying to destroy RWBY, the sooner we can go back to those golden years, where there are no "true fans", "hatedom" or "critics". Just the RWBY fandom.

So from a comercial perspective, do you think either of the two "likely"(it would not shock me if the Rey movie geta canned down the road like so many other SW projects) star wars movies are likely to be successes?
No doubt the sequel to rise of skywalker is Dead on arrival, but I think the mandalorian movie might be able to.
Honestly i was shocked when Ahsoka(which i wasn't a particular big fan of) wasn't a smash hit with viewers just looking at the numbers. I guess apathy really has set in at this point.
But what do you, a guy who actually likes disney star wars think? Can the mandalorian movie beat the overall apathy, or will it be a bomb?
Well, let's all note that I'm terrible at predicting commercial success. I wouldn't have expected that keeping Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield out of the advertising would have resulted in the highest grossing Spider-Man movie of all time.
But I think both of these Star Wars movies have the chance of succeeding.
However, I think the Rey movie is a big gamble. The character and actress were well-received initially, and I honestly don't have a solid idea of how much of a failure 'Rise of Skywalker' was as far as general audiences go. Yeah, it didn't make the money that was expected of it and less than the previous sequel movies, but it still was an overall success financially. And the prequels demonstrated the phenomenon where the movies are accepted blindly by kids who grow up to tout them as artistic tour de forces. By the time this movie comes out, the 12-year-olds who ate up the loudness of RoS might be college students looking to reclaim something from their childhood.
On the other hand, RoS has become the face of Disney's hubris (even though 'Solo: ASWS' is more emblematic of the bland, sloppily written stuff we're getting these days and it came out first) and the cultural narrative around it casts it as an inarguable disaster. (I agree with that narrative, as a reminder. I think it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen.) And even before it's come out, this new Rey movie is landing in the crosshairs of the bigot-fueled culture wars stuff that's dominating youtube and utterly exhausting the sane half of the fandom. It's possible most people who might otherwise be enthusiastic will just not want to think about the movie with that kind of cloud around it.
So there's potential there for great gain, but also potential for great loss. Perhaps it will average out, a middling success that no one talks about afterward, the Star Wars equivalent of Ant-Man 2.
But there's no doubt in my mind that the Mando movie is going to be a big hit unless something goes very wrong (although I doubt that Grogu's name will still be in the final version of the title). People love Baby Yoda. They always have and they always will. It doesn't matter that Mando Season 3 got a mixed reaction; the main dynamic of the title characters is still beloved, the series provides a perfect formula for a blockbuster movie (specifically: pick a Kurosawa movie and remake it in space -- my vote is for 'Yojimbo'/'A Fistful of Dollars,' but 'The Hidden Fortress' would be a hilarious pick), and Pedro Pascal is currently pretty popular. This movie is as close to a guaranteed hit as is possible in movie-making.
My overall perspective is that people aren't tired of or apathetic to Star Wars. They're just bored of the typical Disney+ formula of a weakly-scripted miniseries that requires 200 hours of TV-watching homework in order to understand it and is mainly relying on a mix of nostalgia and good-for-TV special effects to sell itself. That reaction is hitting Marvel as well- and entertainment in general, given the performance of the entire movie industry this year. The initial success of 'The Mandalorian' is proof of that: when it was an episodic Space Western with a cute sidekick, people loved it, but when it tried to do real narrative stuff and positioned itself as a partial sequel to Clone Wars and Rebels, people cooled on it. And its big successful start was amidst both Solo and RoS underwhelming, so it bucked that trend very easily.
Basically, I see people proving themselves as discerning. They have their tastes and peculiarities, but it's becoming less and less about the brand. Even good actor performances aren't enough to save them if the actor has nothing solid to do.
I just wish I knew what brought this on!
Because 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' is a weakly-scripted mess of a movie that coasts on brand-recognition and gives great actors nothing much to do besides play the hits. And people loved that!
Basically, I might just know nothing.
It would be nice if these movies are good, though.

i used to be a huge fan of Alex. nowadays, when his face crosses my feed, i get annoyed. i remember so clearly when he said he 'doesnt feel anything for his fans' and that he is more annoyed by them than anything else. of course, i get it with the super duper stans who develop a parasocial relationship with him, or the one example he said where someone was suicide baiting in his dms.
BUT!
the normal ones, the ones who watch his shows, talk about him, make and post content online...does he realize they are his meal ticket?
you can be the best actor in the world, but if you aren't in the talks, well, good luck. there are enough actors out there trying to make it, who have to work a 2nd job just to put some food on the table.
he is in a very privileged situation and doesn't appreciate it how lucky he got with the cards destiny gave him. if it weren't for vikings, he'd be a nobody actor in a small country. on imdb, his list of movies/shows he worked on is less than impressive. and yet we still talk about him and keep the attention on him - even if the attention is mostly negative lately.
the photography in Lebanon is another good example. without his fans, this wouldn't have worked. if the fans hadn't supported his photography in the first place and got the word out, i doubt anyone would have noticed it. his pics are good, yes, but they aren't out of this world.
in addition with Lebanon, once again he is privileged as fuck. like fuck it up white boy, take those pics and then fly back to Denmark where the worst crime that can happen to him is someone getting his pizza order wrong.
without his fans boosting his stuff, even when it wasn't translated (huge shoutout to the one fan who translates the podcasts and interviews) and/or meant for an international fanbase, i doubt many would care about him. have you noticed that the big fanaccounts on IG are mainly from Latin and South America?
and i am not even going to talk about the shitstorm that is Jo and him.
a pretty face can only get you so far when the mask is starting to crack.
okay rant over, have a nice day admin.
You're more than welcome to rant as much as you want, anon! 😆 Actually, I believe you've summarized pretty well Alex's career and his relationship with the fandom, I couldn't agree more. Back in 2020-2021, I also used to have a fanpage on IG about him, but after that interview you mentioned, where he completely dismissed his fans, it dawned on me that he didn't realize how important such things are for his popularity as an actor, and that it wasn't worth the time and energy we spent on finding and editing content, translating interviews, etc... on someone who didn't appreciate these efforts and even felt annoyed by them. Let alone traveling and investing quite an amount of money on attending conventions.
Although, it seems that for the past year more people started to realize this, or just moved on to support other artists, since a lot of the remaining fanpages seem to be a lot less active than before and the mood in general feels different, as if they're posting something here and there just for the sake of it, but the engagement seems to be less and less. So I'm actually super curious to see how the Paris convention next week will go. 🤷‍♀️
And thank you, anon! I wish you a wonderful day as well! 💖

the post you rbed is good i love (and loathe) this discussion, mcyt fandoms have got to be the most intense policing of each other of any fandoms i've ever been in. as someone in the dreambur community i always feared for my life on twitter, in general but also cause my depictions of them aren't strictly c!, they're like a random mix of c, cc, personas they've had, and some things i just made up, and i enjoy depicting intimacy so much which also varies and has grey areas!! but because it's centered around the likeness of these real creators so many people had this twisted and hypocritical policing system in their heads about it, it was exhausting honestly
jade, i completely agree with you.
i've been in so many fandoms over the last decade, including a lot of rpf fandoms, and i've never experienced such strong and sometimes even brutal policing of people as i did when i got into dsmp/mcyt. like, it was so mind-blowing to me to experience this because in any other rpf fandom i've been in before, rule of thumb was always just "tag your shit appropriately and keep the people it's about out of it". i seriously thought it would be the same way here but boy was i surprised when i found out that's definitely not the case.
it's one of the reasons why i decided to make this tumblr account because i already knew how people would react if i openly talked about dreambur on twitter. like, i'm pretty sure that even if i emphasized again and again that what i write is based on the characters, i would've had people sending me condescending and rude dms, maybe even worse.
like, i get that the line between a content creator and their character is a lot more blurred than between for example an actor and their movie character, especially if you write in a non-canon setting and/or with different character interpretations and personas, like you mentioned. but still, there's a divide, and i oftentimes feel like a lot of people in this fandom forget that. or worse, deliberately ignore it to police and attack things they personally don't enjoy/agree with.
in my opinion, it's probably one of the worst things about this fandom.
