it has been a whole year and a half since derry girls series 3 aired and i have written so many thousands of words of fic, but it only now occurred to me that there’s a very deliberate mirroring of the first lines of 3x01 and the last lines of 3x07.

erin narrates to james’s camera in both:

3x01 - first lines of series 3: they told us we were young. yet, we understood the enormity of it. we understood what was at stake. our fear was replaced with something altogether more terrifying: hope. hope is so much worse. with hope you have something to lose -

versus

3x07 - closing lines of series 3: it's exciting. and maybe a wee bit scary, too, you know. there's a part of me that wishes that everyone could just stay the same; that we could all just stay like this forever. there's a part of me that doesn't really want to grow up. i'm not sure i'm ready for it. i'm not sure i'm ready for the world. but things can't stay the same. and they shouldn't. no matter how scary it is, we have to move on, and we have to grow up. because things, well, they might just change for the better. so we have to be brave. and if our dreams get broken along the way, we have to make new ones from the pieces.

the parallels! the tension between the two monologues! the certainty versus the uncertainty! "fearing" hope versus feeling hope! the desire to grow up versus the understanding of what that change really means! like duh. can’t believe it took me this long.
