How to read the Lord El-Melloi II Case Files Light Novels
I was recently reminded that there is a lot of people who simply don’t know that they can read the Case Files light novels, and that there are people who do know but have no idea where to find them. This is especially a problem when these people have only watched the anime and want to know where they can find more of the story. Since it kind of requires you to go through some hoops (not a whole lot but still), I decided to take a page out of @humbertozero‘s excellent Fate/strange Fake resource post and make one for my other favorite Type-Moon Fate spinoff, the dossiers of El-Melon.
Read the First Volume: Lord El-Melloi II Case Files Vol.1 (PDF) (EPUB)
Read the Second Volume: Lord El-Melloi II Case Files Vol.2 (PDF) (EPUB)

Important note!
It should be noted first that I am just the compiler here. I am neither the translator nor am I the files’ creator. So all credits go to...
Credits
Credits and thanks to TwilightsCall on the Beast Lair forums (from which the majority of the other creditors originally posted their contributions) for translating the first 4 volumes and some of volume 5, thus getting the ball rolling. Further thanks to azwhoisverybored for translating the rest of the series from volume 6 onwards, and thanks to Kneenaw for starting the translation for the rest of volume 5. Thanks to Dotelias for making EPUBs for volumes 1-3, thanks to cereal_ for making EPUBs of volume 4, thanks to u/confusedkuratowski on Reddit for making EPUB of volume 6, and thanks to ProtoformX for making PDFs and EPUBs for volumes 5 to 10 as well as for Adventures volume 1!
And big thanks to Makoto Sanda for writing Case Files in the first place!
Further explanations
Anime
The anime adaptation of Case Files, with the mouthful of a title that is Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note, is particular to use as an entry-point in the series, because it only partially adapts the series. See, the author, Makoto Sanda, said in interview that the two first arcs/cases in the series didn’t quite work as scripts for anime episodes, so the anime only adapted the third case/arc, Rail Zeppelin, which is more action oriented than the more mystery focused first arcs. But because they still needed to explain stuff like Gray, Reines, El-Melloi’s students, etc., many of whom are relevant characters to the arc, the first half/six episodes of the anime is about introducing them.
So to the question “where do I start reading after the anime?”, the answer is unironically to restart at volume 1. And then you may skip volumes 4-5 since they are the Rail Zeppelin arc and there are not much differences besides some characters not being present during that arc. This is why I think you can watch the anime first if that’s more your speed (I have my problems and criticisms of the anime but that’s irrelevant to this post).
And you can’t start with the anime and start reading with volume 6, the first 3 volumes have characters and plot points that come back for the final arc, so you’re gonna be incredibly lost if you think to consume the series this way.
Weirdly enough, despite being original episodes, the anime originals are most likely canon in some ways. Episode 0, the original OVA, is an expansion of an anecdote Gray mentions in the first volume’s prologue, and Episode 1 takes place during Waver’s travels before the story starts and is an actual story, one of the 3 incidents Sanda has in mind for Waver’s journey before he returned to London. Episodes 2 to 6 take place during the one month period between volume 3 and volume 4, and finally the special OVA take place on Christmas also in between arcs.
Manga
The manga has gorgeous art, but, at the time of writing, it is unfortunately only translated up to the second case right now. Still, go check it out.
The Adventures of El-Melloi II
The sequel series currently ongoing, started a year after the first Case Files ended in 2019. You might know it as “the (other) series where Rin shows up grown up and also a pirate”. @reignsan has been compiling pretty thorough chapter-by-chapter summaries of the volumes by @kaibutsushidousha if you don’t mind being spoiled. Or you can be patient and wait for azwhoisverybored to finish translating them on Beast Lair in this thread.
At the time of writing (27/07/23), the first volume of Adventures has been completed and compiled into PDF and EPUB forms.
Lord El-Melloi II Case Files material
This is absolutely not required reading in any shape or form, those lore books are usually of interest only to dumb nerds like me lol. A timeline of the Clock Tower? An explanation of its politics? Yes please. But it also has insights into the characters by the author that aren’t in the books proper, as well as behind-the-scenes explanations for some decisions (for example, why it’s Gray with the American spelling instead of Grey with the British spelling). Only the glossary/encyclopedia is translated, but give it a look...after you read the series, because it assumes you did and has some big spoilers.
Drama CD
What’s that? You heard something about a Buzzfeed quizz about the most handsome Clock Tower teachers and how it’s somehow a plot point? Look no further than one of my only posts that did numbers. Read the summary, it’s hilarious.

Love in the Air: Sky’s Perception of Intimacy (Physical Comfort VS Physical Pleasure/Pain)
Physical intimacy for Sky has mostly been synonymous with either extreme pleasure or pain. Whereas Prapai’s recent actions have derived from a place of physical comfort, which by its nature is rooted in a completely separate context that alludes to safety, solace, and support. Acts of comfort also don’t foster extreme pivots of emotion, as the intent is to bring peace and contentment.
An example would be the kiss on the shoulder from episode 8 versus episode 10. Prapai’s kiss in episode 8 acted as a sexual cue, an invitation to continue their night of intimacy which was mentally painful for Sky. In episode 10, Prapai kisses Sky’s clothed shoulder, and though he makes a cheeky comment, the kiss itself is no longer sexually charged. It’s still typical Prapai in it’s playful delivery, but feels more domestic and affectionate in nature.
The majority of physical touching that Prapai displays in episode 10 is a means to initiate physical comfort. Prapai’s gestures towards Sky are mostly doting and soothing, protective, a means to provide reassurance. One gesture that reoccurred a lot in this episode were head pats. We’ve seen Prapai do this with his siblings as well, and therefore we know its a gesture rooted in affection, and also helps establish Prapai as an older guardian figure.
When Prapai does this, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Sky looks very helpless, innocent and much more childlike. As Sky is the mature one in his group, its easy to forget that he’s still very young. This gesture almost acts a form of reinforcement from Prapai that gives Sky permission to be vulnerable in his presence and to lean on him.
There’s a possibility that because Sky was mainly brought up by his single father, he may not have received displays of affection that are often more commonly associated with a mother figure (such as pats on the head). We see that Sky clearly responds to this form of affection very well and in doing so, tends to let his guard down.
In the previous episode, Prapai holds Sky’s hands repeatedly to soothe him, especially after Sky begs him not to leave. In this episode, rather than simply just holding his hand, Prapai intertwines their fingers, which provides more of an anchoring sensation. This gesture essentially physicalises Prapai’s presence by Sky’s side as they are literally locked together.
When Sky realises Prapai is holding his hand, he immediately clutches back. Reaching out appears to be completely instinctual when Sky is in a defenceless position. He is innately driven to seek out physical comfort, and in his moments of weakness this urge will lead him to cling onto whoever offers it to him. It’s worth noting that this is what makes Sky feel safe. Probably because another person’s physical presence makes him feel less alone and defenceless, and at the mercy of his own demons. All this is further evidence of Sky’s intense fears of being abandoned and unwanted.
Physical comfort is incredibly healing for Sky, notably because it doesn’t have any explicit sexual or romantic connotations. Comfort is something that can be exchanged between two people who simply care about one another. Gestures that are motivated by concern or compassion feel fundamentally more ‘pure’ or sincere, and will more likely earn Sky’s trust.
We see that Sky is appreciative of Prapai offering him that comfort he so desperately wants and needs. Doing so is helping re-write Sky’s understanding and association of physical connection, and what it means to him. There’s a long way to go until Sky can be considerably healed from his trauma, but Prapai is taking steps in the right direction to provide Sky with the means to feel safe first and foremost.

genuinely really frustrating that people will like. choose to accept the age mistake made in assassin as canon for deathbringer when it actively contradicts older material. like. sorry idk if this is me being unfair here but genuinely like. why would you think it's intentional when deathbringer is described in main series as maybe a year or two older than glory at most, and can canonically not be any older than 9 due to stated timeline facts in the main series.
like. I get not liking glorybringer, i really do. no ship is for everyone. hell, even if assassin specifically makes you feel weird about it, so be it, to each their own. i can undertsnad that too. and yes, the glorybringer fans who think the age gap are canon are also in the wrong. they're being really gross, i don't think it's necessary to disclaim that, that feels given, but like... that only comes to my point still of like, i really don't understand taking a spin-off as canon over the main series. i don't really understand prioritizing later content as canon as opposed to the main work over spin-off as canon. why should a spin-off take jurisdiction just cuz it's newer? i feel like the older the canon is, the more likely it is the newer stuff will make mistakes. to me, in the case of a contradiction, the main series should be taken to? a spin-off is meant to supplement the main series, so shouldn't it only supplement canon that doesn't contradict?
like also, i get being frustrated it isn't fixed, but also. like. i obviously have not worked with a publisher before, but if I was writing for fucking scholastic books, no matter how well fucking beloved my series was, I don't know if I could risk being like "hey. can you pull my books from shelves and e-stores for me so that I can edit one line?" Like. I really don't think there's any reality in which I can make a corporation agree to that kind of thing, no matter what that one line may fuck up about my main story. like it's not even the only mistake she makes in the winglets. she calls deathbringer a rainwing in the flip book, but we're not hailing that as canon in retrospect, right? I don't know. I think it's unfair to presume that she's choosing not to fix it as opposed to it being an improbable to downright impossible thing to ask of a publisher. like yes tui is an incredibly successful author but i really don't know if we can presume she has that much actual sway on her publisher.
it's just really exhausting as a deathbringer enjoyer to feel like if I want to talk about and enjoy his character, and yes, that includes context given in the assassin winglet once you ignore the timeline error, i feel like I constantlyyy have to be saying "yes I think the timeline error is an error. no i don't think deathbringer is 13." like. every time i bring him up. i'm a riptide fan I'm used to it but also it's sooooo tiring to go into a character tag for a guy i like and be swamped with hatred for him and it's so much worse for deathbringer than riptide because in the deathbringer tag I have to deal with being actively accused of excusing gross shit for liking him instead of people just saying that my blorbo is boring.

DotS Character Facts— Magolor
The mysterious mage Magolor! He's incredibly talented in both mechanics and mystical arcane, but is also a skilled businessman in his own right with his winning smile and profound customer service skills. While he does have a bit of an ego, he's got himself a heart of gold. He's just not terribly open about it; being overly cautious about being taken advantage of. (Ironic, I know)
Magolor is quite friendly and enjoys making friends, but he's also incredibly reserved about himself personally. People are mostly acquainted with his real chipper and upbeat persona, which is indeed a part of himself, but not all of his personality. To actually get him to show his sincere, raw self, is a deep show of trust on his part. Nevertheless reveal even a morsel about his life story. He's prone to being vague if pressured enough to share something about himself.
He's one of a handful left of his species, and so is careful about showing his true face to anyone. Mags was raised to protect his identity in order to survive. Though as he came into his young adulthood, he began to embrace himself more and flaunt his skills, realizing that his rarity made him practically unknown to the universe. Still, disguising his full appearance is a habit he's yet to break. He certainly adores showing off his people's traditional wear and gear-symbolism, though.
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~
Magolor's story so far:
From his earliest days, he lived in two homes between his parents. This was mainly due to his father bouncing between his wife's apartment on her homeworld, and his workplace off-world. Magolor himself is the spitting image of his father, taking strongly after him in many aspects— most notably his cheerful nature and magical potency.
Though as he came into his preteens, he stayed predominantly with his mother, who grew distrustful of her husband's employer. Caught between a rock and a hard place, she thought it would be better to keep Magolor safe with her, in greater fear of that boss' influence on her son. Mags' father could visit of course, and take him on adventures, so the little family's relationship remained strong and tight.
It was around when he turned 13 when things started to get rough. A certain adversary of the family discovered the lad's identity. In desperation to escape, and a bit of shenanigans, the teenage mage ended up spirited away to the desolate land of Halcandra.
He spent several years surviving on his lonesome on the remains of Halcandra. There, he learned much about its history through an old book he found among the Egg Engine region— where he made his main place of residence while searching for a way to escape. He picked up some unique, forgotten spells, and worked to hone his magic to a sharp, nearly terrifying level.
Along the way, he discovered the legendary Lor Starcutter, which became his ultimate hope to return home; and, perhaps, achieve a greater goal with some upgrades to its weaponry. The Master Crown was tempting to take a shot at, but the embrace of his parents and a hot shower sounded better at the moment.
Using his talent, and many skills learned from his mother, he managed to bring the Lor back to life, and set a course back home— first to his father to show off his AMAZING new ride, knowing his father would recognize the magnificent vessel.
His return was awesome indeed; however it was short lived. Once a certain someone became aware that he knew the location of the most powerful magical artifact in the known universe, he realized that he unintentionally put it in danger of it falling into the wrong hands. Hands... that weren't his own!
The ambitious young man went off to claim the crown for himself to spite his competition. He aimed to be there first, get it first, and use the Master Crown to achieve his own personal agenda. Of course we all know that backfired and then some.
Yeah, that wasn't exactly the smartest move, buddy.
So he spent about 4 years at his humble little Shoppe in the Dream Kingdom, amassing a small fortune with plans to eventually return to Popstar, now that he had acquired the power to transcend entire realities. That, and he had a lot of strength to recover from his ventures in the Dimensional Abyss.
While living in the kingdom, he did well to hone his new magical skills, as well picked up sword lessons from local masters. Though he regularly trained for 4 years, he's not too shabby— swordplay is clearly not his forte, but he has enough skill to get by in a pinch. He became a pretty solid fighter, thanks to frequent monster attacks while searching for materials to make new armor and weapons for Kirby & co.
Just a few months before the events of DotS:MMM, he made his trip back to Popstar, and went on a little quest to find his friends and earn a chance from each one to earn their trust back.
Their reactions were pretty... varied. But every single one gave him a chance in their own way.
Except for one friend: Rovy Zeidric (he belongs to @starlightfyre). He helped Magolor repair the Lor while Kirby and friends went after the big parts, so the two were quite familiar with each other. Rovy was a new employee under Meta Knight's engineering crew, and knowing his talents with exotic machines, he assigned Rovy to assist Magolor— but also keep an eye on him. Of course out of them all, Rovy took Magolor's betrayal the hardest.
To this day, Magolor is trying his best to earn a chance with Rovy and be his friend again. It hasn't gone terribly well, since Rovy's busy and, quite frankly, a little too petty at the moment to let him in. Though Rovy would never admit that he's being petty at this point.
In recent times, he's come to hold some precious knowledge, which he keeps close to his chest. There's some things Magolor is aware of that the citizens of Town Town, his new residence, couldn't hope to fathom.
Regardless, he's happily running his theme park while coming to Kirby's aid whenever he needs an extra friend. He certainly jumped to the cause once again just a month or so before DotS' main events, when the Jambastians caused a bit of trouble with their Jamba heart shards possessing certain folks around Popstar.
He used his ability to transcend realities to bring in dream friends and help Kirby, nevertheless the Lor to pick up other far-flung allies, such as Susie (much to his chagrin).
There's plenty more to discover about Magolor in DotS:MMM and Dreams of the Stars, where he unsuspectingly plays an important role...
