James leaned against the locker beside Regulus’s, making sure to stay on his left side (his better-hearing side), and firmly questioned, “What do you want from me?”

“You’re supposed to figure that out yourself,” Regulus quipped in the same bored tone he often took. James had learned to not be offended by it, but to find it quite endearing.

“Look, I’ve tried everything that my brain has ever thought of, and obviously none of it is working, so I’ll try one last time and then I’ll leave you be,” James told him, and as earnestly as he could manage, he asked, “Will you go out with me this weekend?”

Regulus paused as he reached into his locker. “What’s your plan?”

“My plan?” Regulus keenly watched his mouth as he spoke, and despite it being just for lip-reading purposes, James still felt himself reeling over it.

“For the date. What do you have planned?”

“Oh,” James straightened out his back. “well, I honestly haven’t thought too much about it, because I've just been trying to get you to say yes, so uh… I don’t know, maybe we could get something to eat after school?”

“I have decathlon practice after school,” Regulus reminded, resuming his collection of his textbooks.

“Okay, what about this weekend?”

“This weekend.” Regulus nodded as he added a notebook to the stack of books in his arms. “Where are we going to eat, then?”

James chuckled warily. “Is this, like, an interrogation or something?”

“I just like to know what I’m doing and when. Nothing personal,” Regulus said and shut his locker, finally meeting James’s hopeful gaze. “A drive-in theater by the East River is playing CODA Saturday night. We could go see that together.”

“Isn’t that your favorite movie?” James asked despite confidently knowing.

“It is.” Nothing could compare to making Regulus Black, the most straight-faced, deadpanned person in human existence, smile. “I’ll text you more about it later?”

“Yeah, okay. Yeah,” James couldn’t help but smile back.

With his free hand and that same small smile, Regulus held up his hand in an L shape, and then tilted it down, telling James a simple “later” that replayed in his mind the rest of the day.
