Remember the Flowers (Sci-Fi Visual Novel)

So most visual novels I've talked about on this blog have been from Echo Project, a development studio that is famous in the furry visual novel scene for making some of the most acclaimed VNs in the furry fandom and for actually completing some of them. Remember the Flowers isn't made by them though. Its creator, primary writer, and artist are all Jericho. The only connection it has to Echo Project is that its music is done by Anthemics, who's a regular OST composer for Echo Project games like Arches, Khemia, Interea, and a few tracks on the Smoke Room. Because of that, the soundtrack to this VN is really stellar, as most of Anthemics' work is.

Now I will warn you that it is really hard to not spoil this game as the story contains two really major twists that precede some of the best parts of the entire game. I will try though. With that out of the way, the game starts with the protagonist having a nightmare before waking up in the middle of class. He's a college student who's sort of coasting by on his journey to become a doctor. After correcting his teacher on his lesson after he was caught napping in class, he soon gets dismissed and makes some plans for a date with his boyfriend before taking a nap in his dorm room. When he wakes up, he's in the middle of a dark alley with long white hair, a bloody headwound, medical scrubs, and the inability to remember basic details about himself. Fortunately, he's found by Cooper, whose job it is to find humans like the protagonist and take them to a safe haven called Resoom where he can get help once he's safe. It's only now that you find out this world the protagonist is waking up in is a futuristic scifi dystopian world, unlike the more or less regular modern setting the story started in, but with some characters who are anthropomorphic characters, because furry.

Now before I threaten to spoil the game, let's go over some positives. The biggest one I have is the serialization. One problem a lot of unfinished visual novels have is that they have a hard time finding a place to pause the story before the next update. Arches does this pretty well while 9:22 does this really poorly. Remember the Flowers, thankfully, not only has chapters that begin and end in pretty good places but it also has groups of chapters called "Arcs". Each Arc could be a visual novel in its own right and it makes RtF feel like a compilation of a VN series rather than one long VN. This is especially good because the creator is not working on this game as their main job, so they can't afford to do frequent releases. However, the structure makes it so you can just read to the end of the last completed arc and be satisfied with waiting until the next arc is completed. Each arc is bookended by a major twist or a major character revelation that sets the new status quo of the next arc. The first arc is definitely the weakest one, as the only major character besides the protagonist is Cooper and it provides a lot more mysteries than answers. However, the second one is my favorite, but the third and so far last completed one is really a great contender if not for the fact there's not a lot to do except hang out, but the character exploration is really fantastically done.

Now for other positives, the protagonist, Cyrus, is probably the most well-written human protagonist in a furry VN. Human protagonists have a very terrible reputation in furry VNs for being extremely bland player-insert characters whose self-identity is so non-existent that you usually get to pick their names. It's such a negative stereotype in fact that Furry VN databases usually include "Human Protagonist" as a tag to filter out. Even Adastra falls into this trap to an extent. But Cyrus is not a bland character. For a few things, he's asexual and has a pre-established boyfriend, childhood friends, and his own career path and interests. Although he still has about as much personality as Marco in Adastra at the beginning of the game, as the plot progresses and he finds out more about himself and the world around him, he slowly has more and more personality and development to his character and the fact he sorta fills the role of a player-insert early on makes the dramatic beats hit that much harder, because then the progression to what he's like later on makes so much more sense, because you can't help but imagine that if you were in his place, you would probably end up the exact same way. This is exemplified in the text. In the first arc, he's just wide-eyed and curious. In the second, he's maintaining a much more critical outlook, trying to assess everyone he meets and every piece of information he gets carefully. In the third, he's robotic and describes everything very matter-of-factly. He feels like he's talking in the third-person for how bluntly he describes everything. But he does start to get back in touch with his humanity as the arc goes on. However, in the fourth arc, while he's almost back to his old self, there's a distinct lack of self-regard or care for his own well-being. And each step from the beginning of the game to the last update feels natural.

Now I did make it clear that the first arc has some problems. It's unfortunately very slow and not a lot happens. Most of it is used for some broader establishing information, but the actual plot is boringly simple. Cyrus goes home with Cooper and spends a day or two at his house, he then goes with Cooper to get some supplies, and they hop on a train to the pickup spot. Until the arc-ending twist, that's most of what happens. And because Cooper and Cyrus are the only major characters of that arc, there's not a lot of dynamic to play off of and because Cooper is very secretive, there's also not a lot of information to find out. In the second arc, you get introduced to 4 major characters, 3 of which have their own dynamics with each other who are also a lot less stingy with information and a lot more open about their backgrounds and who they are. And any information they do withold, they make sure to explain why they are witholding it and that in itself can give you something to mull over, or it can inform their characters, such as Axel who withholds the absolute minimum information he's been commanded to, Ring who is very stingy with what he reveals and rarely reveals basic information except on accident, and Rose who barely conceals any information if she can manage to remember it. Also, they do reveal most of what they are witholding anyways by the end of the arc. So by contrast, the 2nd and 3rd arcs are very entertaining and well-paced even if it does get a little slice-of-life-ish by the third arc. I wouldn't recommend skipping the first arc though. It still has its moments and there's a lot of important information in it you can't miss.

I'd say Remember the Flowers is definitely a great visual novel even in its unfinished state, especially since it's more like a game series anyways. I highly recommend it and I would do that even for first time players. If you want your first furry visual novel to not feel like a dating sim, then RtF is a really good choice. I would recommend it over Adastra only to people who really don't need visual novels to be completed to like them. With that said, until next time, keep on yiffing

Do you remember that VN on day 9 where Suit Saeran burst into our room to ask for a kiss, only for him to have a breakdown and Ray suddenly emerged in the middle of that moment? My heart aches when I see both of them like that :'(

Perhaps you could write that scene with Ray's POV? His feelings, his reaction when he saw MC for the first time since his cleansing, maybe some of his thoughts when he calls MC for the last time before Suit Saeran comes back?

Cherish yourself...! He pleaded in his head, pounding against his skull, painful enough to tempt him to knock himself out by hitting it against the hard wall of his room until he's unconscious. You shouldn't stay here...! Ray sobbed out, both hands flying into his white hair, grabbing the strands with vigor.

You couldn't have meant it, there's no way you meant it when proclaiming to stay here regardless. Despite his hands leaving marks on your skin, your body becoming weak due to the lack of sleep and food. You couldn't possibly be true when saying you wouldn't leave this place without him. He'd told you in a begging, desperate tone to just go since he's an abandoned personality either way. Ray panted out the shot of pain, crashing down into the voices mocking him somewhere in the depths.

Didn't you care about yourself? Being well-groomed and caring before arriving, this could in no way even remotely be a habit for you. Not when looking healthy at first. Not when smiling so bright, filled with inexplicable energy the hacker struggled to understand to this day.

Why did this happen? He prayed day and night you'll never meet Saeran. He hoped so intensely that things work out for once, if not for his happiness, then for your safety. Which's not just on the line anymore. He's aware it's all far beyond simple warnings and fears. He put you in danger. I am the danger, he thought bitter between all the whimpers caused by unbearable pain. It's like someone hit his head with a baseball bat, trying to crack the bones and force his brain apart. And yet, it's nothing in comparison to the horror he'd faced when returning.

The mess he got you into's something he's unable to make up for ever again. He couldn't believe it at first. However, your thin face so pale without enough sleep spoke walls. Ray shook his head while tugging on the beached hair like it's going to stop if he just pulled it out. No.. no, no no no.. How did he end up being the one putting you through pain? When you're the first person in his worthless life who treated him with kindness. The angel that wouldn't hurt a fly, he couldn't take it.

Why wasn't there a time where he’s capable of doing something right? Especially this situation. Especially treating the only person he felt warm around the same way. Instead he's got dragged into the abyss, unable to change anything in this world. Seeing your tear-stained face's one of the worse sights he'd seen in his life. Your smile's much brighter, much more beautiful when being happy about the smallest things.

Why was he so weak? So useless he couldn't protect the person he'd come to cherish in these short moments? They never seemed to last, last time Ray looked you in the eye he ran away from the kiss. He couldn't do that right either, you must've been disappointed in him for acting like a coward. But that's all Ray was. A stupid, worthless coward.

“Ngh..! Argh..” The strings of elixir hit him irregularly, almost knocking him over multiple times. The room spun as his stomach began to wretch in disgust. He needed to get you out of this place. You weren't meant to live here from the beginning. Ray knew, even if only subconsciously. Not changing a thing considering he could tell it's a bad idea. You belonged in the light, to the happy side of life.

What was he thinking? Keeping you here because he's too weak without your warmth. He longed for your praise and comfort back then, how did he put your life on the line just to greedily take that from you? He should've let you live your life in peace, with people who made you feel good. Who properly cared for your well-being and made you laugh with funny jokes. Ray wheezed out the fever running down disguised as sweat, this black suit's much more uncomfortable than his magenta coat.

How dare he acting arrogant to the point it's costing you health. Ray never wanted this to escalate, on the contrary, he wished to make your life a lot better in the future. Forget that wish... His clouded eyes scanned the pattern of the floor, his usual cool computer room a sauna he wanted to escape from. Forget ever thinking you could make her happy... Ray pressed his lips into a thin line because he's afraid to throw up by the imprecations. Had you ever been happy since arriving here?

Now he saw, you're too good for him. Much more than he first suspected and he's ashamed for thinking about holding you close this brief time together. He didn't deserve it, not like this. Not when tormenting you although you've never done anything wrong. It's him who constantly messed up all the precious opportunities given regardless.

How could he come to the terms with the cruel reality where he made you shiver and cry? Where he scared and taunted you? How could Ray accept the fact he'd destroyed many parts of your light without any right? The traitor deserved it for tearing his family apart. The redhead deserved it for discharging him like he belonged in the trash underneath the earth. But not you. You were soft, comfortable, sweet, kind, charming, open, true.. You're everything Ray couldn't dream of becoming. Wanted to hold gently in his hands.

His prospects for a better future were long gone, he couldn't justify doing the exact same, cruel thing to you. He deserved the treatment of a disobedient dog but you're nothing like that. You deserved pretty clothes and good food. Ray's gut wrenched again, making him fall forward to his hands in agony. He's about to pass out when he could feel his pulse start to mix up with adrenaline to get him there quicker. He had to secure the escape route he shortly mentioned while stumbling over his own tears at the phone.

You called him after busting out of the room, asking if he's fine. Ray felt his heart break when realizing even though you're the victim and he's the culprit, you're still spilling with such big amount of kindness. Looking out for him when you're the one starved and tortured in that little room all day. He spit inside his own mind, how it would’ve been better if you'd never met him in the first place. How your life would've been great without a nuisance like him ruining it. Ray couldn't begin to describe how ashamed and sorry he was. But that's pointless.

You're hurt, apologizing wouldn't make any abuse undone. I hate you... He spoke to himself, to his other half? Ray wasn't any better than Saeran, they're simply bad in different ways. He was and always will be a pest for others around him. As his tears streamed down his cheeks, he gritted his teeth in pure anger. I hate you so much... He said again with as much venom he could muster in that unstable state.

He tore on his hair again, registering only half of the pain when tearing some out. A shame, really. He should've felt all the hurt like you'd done these past few days. Ray couldn't live with the memory of your attempts of soothing him, hushing his rage to take away the torment. You not once returned the pain to him, instead you took it all like that's just something to deal with. Like you were obligated to bear his presence. Ray ignored the blood running down alongside the tears and sweat.

Bug.. dirt.. He cursed himself, scratching his other hand against the floor. The tips of his fingers slowly getting numb. Stupid, worthless idiot..!! Can't you see your existence is a waste of time!? Ray frowned by the words; they're not coming from himself. His fuzzy state made the furniture around the room turn into blurs of color. But even with that, he's able to make out who these shoes in front of his crouched body belonged to. An ice-cold shower ran down his back in panic.

She kicked him in the chest, hearing his pathetic coughing. “You're better off dead!!” The yelling lingered inside his ears hopelessly, having him gasp only to find his throat narrowed by the fear. “That's why your brother's so much better than you. You are too stupid!” She spat the words, knowing how they're making him cry harder.

“The girl would've been happier in a prison than being with you..” Ray wrenched again, this time the contents made out of elixir and small meals landed on the floor. The smell rose into his nose, sickening the last few blank spaces inside his head. She kicked again and with her heels on, it stabbed like knifes through his skin. Another load of puking coming over his lips.

Her voice's rough like he remembered, just as pissed off as well. That's not the first time she'd kicked him with such sharp shoes, it's not the first time she attacked the only things he considered good in his otherwise pathetic life. “You not only tire her like you do to me, you're worse to her!” She screamed in furious manner. “Saeyoung would've been so much better for her.. than a good-for-nothing like you.”

“Stop.. p-please..” He managed to choke out, of course she'd say that. But if it's the obvious truth, was it her fault for it to burn down his veins like a cold fire? “You're killing her.. And you kill my nerves as well! I should lock you back into the closet and let you stave for good this time..” Ray could tell his heart's contracting by the threat. Another silent sob tore from his lunges.

She growled as he cried, seeing him do his best to stifle the sound the way he did in younger years. “Nothing but scum.. You think she ever liked you!? Are you stupid?” She asked in a mocking tone, seeing him press his forehead to the ground further away to avoid the puke. “You know why you're like this? Because you're worth nothing. You live like a bug and you will die like one.” Ray pressed his hands over his ears.

But also then, she found her methods to reach inside. Please stop.. stop stop stop..! He wanted it to stop, to forget and pass out. She just continued, ignoring his begging skillfully. “You can't keep her and you can't do anything right. It's no wonder she waits for you to vanish!”

“SHUT UP–!” He screamed back for the first time at her, throwing his arm to lash out at whatever he's able to hit. The nerves slammed the edge of the chair which forced him to hiss out. A sharp intake of air filled the walls, his bright eyes snapping back open. The sweat let his hair stick to his forehead, even after trying to brush through it.

Another hiss as he came in contact with the wound that moron just make. Saeran groaned, about to wrench once again because of the disgusting smell in front of him. He looked around, yet there's no soul to be detected. For a moment he sighed, letting his body find the calm to relax. This is your fault! He swallowed the bitter taste that etched his tongue. Closing his eyes afterwards.

Saeran clenched a fist by the boiled-up blood running through his arms, tightening the strength with which he held the fists to the floor. Idiot Ray... He thought annoyed. Great. Now he looked like the clown, must've pleased you, didn't it. Letting a long-time pass, he's steady enough on his feet. Saeran brushed his suit right. Trying to fix at least a bit of the chaos. “Shower..”

He mumbled, unable to shake the shiver of madness. How dare you tricking him like he's the plaything. He'd make you pay for embarrassing him like this, like he's the weakling you wanted to have back so badly. Saeran snapped his head towards the phone on the table by the buzz, seeing you opened a chatroom. Addressing him with name as if nothing happened. His frown twisted by all these conflicting feelings, so he figured he's going to make you regret testing him right this instant.

“Saeran... ”

“What have you done to me!? ”

You were lying down on Kirishima’s bed, deeply engrossed in the romantic scene transpiring on your phone’s screen. You had decided to entertain yourself with an episode from your favorite show while your best friend was in the shower.

But that kind of future won’t happen for you. It can’t. Not in the gross body you were in. Surely you were easy on the eyes, but what lurked inside was a demon that constantly bewitched your thoughts. Making you see people around you as simply meat sticks and sticky caverns to be engorged in.

Simply put, you were a succubus. Or at least had a succubus-like quirk. You never told anyone though, only being known to your parents. Kirishima was just such a sunshine in your life and you wanted him to continue warming you for the rest of it.

There was a time where 90% of your thoughts toward him were like this…and then as time went on, they became more savagely. Where all you wanted was for him to sink those sharp teeth in your flesh, ravaging your body with a cock that could probably barely even fit inside you, holding you within those arms- those beautifully muscular arms that glistened provocatively with sweat when he trained. Especially at the fact that the two of you would be huddled up alone together for who knows however long a movie marathon is. You had to find a way to quickly rid yourself of these thoughts.

“Mmm, let me look up some! Hold on.” A blatant lie. You were going to google get-dry-quick schemes so you could enjoy the rest of the night safely with Kirishima. It was the least he deserved after training so hard today.

But you needed something now. Why were all these long-winded answers so abundant?! Couldn’t they just give you something to do now? What the fuck would you have to do?? Shove an iceblock your pussy?? Should you go ask Todoroki for a favor??

You were in the middle of texting Todoroki when Kirishima pulled you out of your frenzy.

“You find anything, L/N?”

“Gyahh! What?!” You dropped your phone and looked at Kirishima like you were a deer caught in his headlights.

“Woah, you okay there?! Did I scare you? Maybe horror isn’t a good idea, then.” His worried face could send you to the grave. How could you let him worry about you like this?

“Ohh..no Kiri. I’m fine. We can just watch whatever you want.” You eased your breaths, desperately trying to sound normal.

“You sure?! Awesome! There’s this zombie flick I’ve been meaning to watch but I get kinda scared watching stuff like that alone.” He clicked around happily through some tabs on his browser. “I think if its with someone as courageous as you, I’ll be less scared.”

Was he trying to make you cry? Saying something so beautiful like that with a face like his. Shame on him, honestly.

“I’m gonna play it now, you ready?”

“Mmhm”

The movie so far was just as you hoped: grotesque, gory, horrifying, and most importantly, non-arousing. It helped that you stayed on the bed while Kirishima sat on the floor, so I guess that was cheating, but nonetheless necessary.

“You doin’ okay up there, L/N?” Kirishima checked up on you. You had probably been suspiciously quiet due to concentrating on waving away any little lewd thoughts.

“Oh yeah, what about you, Kiri?”

“W-Well! I was kinda thinking! That maybe uhh…I could possibly join you up there?” He scratched his head in nervousness at his slighty flirty suggestion.

Oh no

“Up where?”

“On the bed. Y-you know…with you?”

At this point you didn’t really know whether to praise or curse the gods above you. If there was one thing you could be sure to thank them for, it was the dark room that hid the flustering of your facial expression.

“I-Its your bed after all…”

“I know! I guess its just- heheh..nevermind! I’m hopping up!” Kirishima rugged his massive body on the bed next to you. Even taking some of the blanket you had so you’d be forced to share with him, he just softly smiled as he did so.

This was way too much for the hellion within you to handle. You could smell his strong scent from beside you. His breathing more pronounced in your ear drums. And its like you could feel his heartbeat within you. Pulsating inside you…

Things would take a turn for the worse when it seemed like a sweet romantic scene was about to show up. The two main leads were alone in a bunker and one of them had just revealed they were bitten.

“Samuel, Nooo!”

“Lilia! Listen to me! I need you to hear what I have to say.”

“We don’t have time, Samuel! We- We need to get you medicine. We have to! We have-“

“Stop, Lilia! There’s nothing that can save me now! You and I both know what happens from here.”

Was such an option available to you? Even if you did take away the innocence of your love, Kirishima Eijirou, who’s to know how your body would react? The best result would be that your body would finally be satisfied and you’d no longer have these perverse thoughts.

On the other hand, maybe you’d just sink further and further down. Drowning in the suffocating waters of lust. And then what? Kirishima can’t just drop everything to cater to your needs. No. He was going to be hero. An amazing one at that.

But Kirishima wasn’t just a hero, he was your best friend. You felt awful every time he would praise your strong-willed persona. Saying how amazing you were despite being quirkless. Fate/stay night Réalta Nua Part 1 - Fate Route (1/2)

Prologue I’ve always wanted to read the VN so it’s time for me to actually do it! I feel like the anime left a lot of things to be desired so let’s see how it goes~ Didn’t expect Mitsuzuri and Rin to be good friends hmmm. I knew Shinji was supposedly popular but I didn’t know he was supposed to be THAT popular, guess I can further understand why he gets so insulted when Rin rejects him but yeah, still a thoroughly crappy guy. Ugh, his arrogance puts me off to no end. Wow, omg, Rin put him in his place so hard, it was hilarious. No wonder why he hates her lolll. Rin is so silly though, she knew her clock was one hour faster and yet she totally forgot loll, I wonder if she really would have been able to summon Saber instead if she did the ritual at the time when her magic was at its peak though? However, Archer is much more interesting and fun than Saber so yahh, not much of a loss there hahaha. Well, I guess since you have to summon them with something related to the Servant, she probably would have still got Archer haha. Hahahaha, I love how he said he’ll ignore her opinions and do everything his own way, so she can just hide in the basement until the Holy Grail War ends🤣🤣 Lmao when she used one of the Command Spells to force him to obey her orders from now on lolll. But I see…she failed summoning him properly so he doesn’t have his memories of who exactly he is… Lmao that he had to clean the living room because he has to listen to her orders or it’ll affect him (due to the spell). Their relationship is so cute though, he even made good tea for her! Although she’s too much of a tsundere to admit that she liked it, he could already tell, so that really adorable hahaha. I’ve alwayssss shipped Rin and Archer together since back in the day hahaha. So cuteee when she was embarrassed at him calling her Rin when she thought he’d just call her “you” or “Master” hahaha.

I love how confident and strong Rin is. She doesn’t feel the need to hide her magic circuits (since other Masters can detect it) because she wants other Masters to find her instead of her looking around for them hahaha, she’s so cool. Honestly, I’m really enjoying seeing things from Rin’s perspective rather than Shirou’s. Sakura…is talking to Gilgamesh? Honestly though, seeing Rin quite actively help and communicate with Sakura is very nice and refreshing, I always found it weird in the anime that they didn’t even seem like acquaintances imo. Also great to see more insight into Kuzuki’s personality with him cancelling and delaying midterm exams to a later date because of a misspelling in the papers loll. Rin even asks about whether she’s okay considering her home circumstances🥺 I see…I always kinda wondered why Rin never did anything to the boundary field at the school when she knew about it, but I see, she can’t destroy it thoroughly, but she was planning to hinder it by decimating some symbols, until Lancer appeared anyway. A lot of things are much clearer in the VN since it explains things and gives you time to digest it, but there really was much relief that Shirou happened to pass by and stopped Lancer from using his Noble Phantasm and kill them. Although, it doesn’t show that this person is actually Shirou, but you do see that Rin obviously really cares about this person, because she used the pendant (given to her by her father’s will, it was supposed to be a last resort for the war) containing an abundant amount of magical power to save his life. Initially, she was about to just accept his death as something “unlucky” since it’s just the normal process of killing all witnesses and it was unfortunate that she was careless this time (since she always made sure to have no witnesses so she wouldn’t have to kill anyone), but when she saw his face, she couldn’t help but use everything she could to save him. Interesting to see that she forgot about the pendant and left it with him, not that it’s very useful anymore since it doesn’t have much magic in it. Also interesting to know that since she lacked the skills to revive him from near death, the magic power from the pendant helped her in that regard, so I guess that means if you lack skills, you can make up for it with magic power?

Hmm I see, so the reason they always say that Saber is the strongest is because in all the previous wars, Saber has made it to final fight. I’ve always wondered why they always put such high acclaim on Saber when even though she is strong, I wouldn’t call her the “strongest”. Nice to also have it clear that most magic doesn’t work on Saber, Lancer and Archer because they were fighters who fought through the age of myths where magic was used widely, and that’s also why these classes are usually the best. I guess that’s why they’re always focused on Saber compared to the other Servants. Lmaoo, for someone who has no goal in this war besides winning, Rin is really confident and cool to be able to sway Archer in believing in her without even trying haha. Took me a while to figure it out, but I guess the pendant that Archer returned to Rin is actually his own? Does that mean he already knew who he was then and was just hiding it from her? I feel so sorry for Rin though! Imagine if she really got killed by Saber because she went back to save Shirou from Lancer and ended up letting her guard down against the sudden appearance of Saber! I didn’t even realise this part was a prologue, and it even ends on the cliffhanger of Saber intending to kill Rin! Well, anyway since I’ve forgotten a lot of things, it’s great to see things again whilst having some knowledge of other stuff that makes me realise what I missed when I first watched the anime haha. Guess we’re back to Shirou’s perspective then!

Fate route (Day 1-9) It’s so cute to see Sakura wake Shirou up in the morning! So crazy that she got there at 6am though omg, how early does she wake up to prepare breakfast for everyone?! At least Shirou usually tries to wake up early to help out, but wow, club activities start at 7am like dayum. I find it so funny how her whole class calls her by the nickname she hates - Tiger, it’s the only way to bring her back alive when she faints from falling down lmaooo. As usual, Illya is creepy saying that if he doesn’t summon it soon, he’s going to die, and it was at night when no one was around on the road!

I’m glad that there’s more explanations about magic circuits since I’ve been rather confused by them. So basically, the amount of magic circuits in a person is determined at birth, and usually it’s not very much. This is where inheriting magic circuits from generation to generation comes in, and that’s why people like Rin are so powerful in magic I guess, because she’s a descendant of a prominent family of magi. However, these magic circuits can only be inherited through blood relations and that’s why Kiritsugu couldn’t pass his to Shirou, although I’m not sure if he would have even if he could tbh. The good thing though, is that apparently every person has at least one type of magic they’re good at, and that’s why Shirou is good at understanding the structure of things. And now I’m glad to understand the difference between mana and od because mana is magical energy floating around the world, and most magi are able to draw mana and “filter” it through their magic circuits to use as a spell. Since Shirou doesn’t have many, I assume he uses od which is the magic within oneself most of the time and I guess that’s why when he gets Saber, it’s hard for him to give enough magical energy to her since it’s difficult for him to draw any mana with his limited magic circuits? Especially since even when he’s doing his training and fixing stuff, he has to utilise an artificial magic circuit and that’s already dangerous enough to his body if he lacks the concentration… I see, as he said, he is not a magus, he is only a magic user who can create magical energy within his body and channel it into objects hmmm, I like that it’s much clearer in the VN what exactly he can do. Strengthening objects is a cool ability though since it reinforces the object’s abilities by putting magical energy into it~ It’s kinda crazy how the Magic Association only cares about concealing magic from the public and not about whether people are using magic properly, it’s like as long as it doesn’t affect them doing their stuff, they don’t care. I guess it’s because they’re probably doing suspicious magic research themselves imo.

Not sure I like the translation of “seigi no mikata” being superhero, since technically you could be a superhero but not really an ally/protector of justice. Although, I do enjoy more info about Shirou’s motivations here. I guess the fact that Shirou tries to be one is mainly because he wants to become someone like Kiritsugu (since he saved him), so really now that I think about it, Shirou isn’t exactly what you would call a “nice person”, like he’s still nice in various areas etc, but a lot of the reason why he doesn’t mind helping people is because he thinks that as long as he keeps helping people who need him and he has the ability to help them, he will one day become the protector of justice he wants to be. On the other hand, I never realised/remembered that Shinji and Shirou actually had a fight where Shirou beat him up when he asked Shinji about Sakura’s bruises and Shinji had the audacity to say he hits her because he feels like it. What a douchebag. I do feel bad for Shirou that because of that, now Shinji thinks of him more as an enemy now and apparently hurts Sakura more, I feel so sorry for Sakura… It always felt like (in the anime) Shirou left the archery club because of Shinji but it seems like, it was a part of the reason, but not really, since Shirou does want to focus on working for living expenses and because he got a scar from work on his right shoulder and I guess it’s not very proper to have something like that when doing archery since people can see it when they shoot. Or maybe these are all just excuses haha, since Shirou seems to be the best “archer”. It seems that Lancer noticing Shirou’s presence was partly done deliberately so that he could distract him from killing Archer? I mean, Shirou’s sick of not being able to do anything when other people are in danger so that’s understandable..

It’s pretty cute how tsundere Rin is, she obviously wants to tell him about the Holy Grail War and everything because she doesn’t want him to die a meaningless death, but at the same time she can’t bring herself to say it like that, so she tells him she’s doing it because he stopped Saber from killing her. When really, he’s the one who owes her considering how she used that jewel that was left for her in her father’s will to save his life. I don’t know why, but in the anime, Shirou came across as annoying with how he keeps saying girls like Saber shouldn’t fight and how he’ll protect her etc, but in the VN, I think the interaction with Rin thinking it was funny that Shirou was going to protect them from perverts at night (when they went to visit Kotomine at the church) made it sound so silly and cute instead. Well, that bad end where you choose to revoke the command spells and thus your rights as a Master was pretty crappy! Illya literally “kills” Shirou and plans to torture him until he’s really dead! That’s pretty disgustingly ruthless honestly… Lmao at the existence of the Tiger Dojo though! It’s a place where they tell you how you went wrong with your choices to get this bad end and tells you the mindset you should have to get back on track to the proper ending lol. Kinda weird to see Illya act so cute in it when she just killed Shirou though lol. Although, I have to admit that Kirei being able to “take out” Shirou’s command spells was very interesting… Tiger Dojo 2 ending was nice in the sense that you could really see how Rin would sacrifice her life to protect Shirou even when he makes silly choices, it’s really heartwarming to see how much she cares about him tbh. And I guess also “nice” to see how much Illya loves and hates both Kiritsugu and Shirou.

One thing that’s interesting to see in the VN for this fight was Shirou’s intention to save Saber by pushing her away from Berserker’s attack, and hoping to think of his next move after that, rather than him simply shielding Saber. In the end, because he wasn’t fast enough, he ended up taking the hit for Saber, but he had no intention of actually getting hit, he thought he would be able to dodge it. Maybe it was naive of him to think that, but I do enjoy knowing more about his intentions and hopes from this move. I love how Rin teases Shirou when he gets embarrassed at shaking her hand because he realised how soft it was hahahah. Shirou is so cute hahaha! LMAO when he doesn’t count Taiga as someone he’s embarrassed to touch hands with because he considers her as someone from a different planet rather than a girl hahahaha. Ohh? I didn’t really think that how famous each Servant is in the current time actually affected how strong they are as well. I see, so they need to be known and like “worshipped” to solidify their existence and power, I guess that makes sense.

I love Shirou and Saber’s first proper conversation with each other at the dojo. It was really nice to see him have the resolve to fight now that he’s decided to keep with the war, and that he’s just like Saber when it comes to their beliefs and values of protecting the innocent. But I think the best thing about their relationship that I’ve always loved is that Shirou always treats Saber like another fellow “person” rather than a Servant. He’s polite, he’s normal with her and he acts the same as he does with others, and I think that always catches Saber off guard in a good way haha. I also love the professional relationship Archer and Rin have though! But yeah, lmao at Rin just bringing her luggage to Shirou’s place saying she’s living there from now on since they’ve decided to ally with each other. Ohh, I don’t know if I missed it (or I just forgot loll) in the anime but I never realised that Shirou wasn’t giving any magical energy to Saber at all! I thought he gave a little bit! But apparently the summoning might have gone wrong and the connection between them wasn’t connected so she can’t receive anything? No wonder why Saber always has to limit herself and her use, because she’s relying on her own medical energy to stay in this world! Actually, yeah, I think I remember it now lol, my bad! Anyway, gotta love Sakura when she was annoyed that Rin was trying to shoo her out of Shirou’s place when Sakura basically thinks of it as her territory loll. Even funnier when Shirou “forgot” about having to deal with Taiga in regards to Rin living here now lol. Not to mention Saber when she appears later! But Taiga is relatively easy to handle anyway haha. Awww I love how Taiga hates the Tiger nickname but her cup has a tiger on it lmao!

Honestly, although Shirou’s white knighting can get a bit too much, it’s situations like when he decides to introduce Saber to everyone instead of continuing to hide her that really makes me like him. Taiga is so cute though, she has such a soft spot for Shirou that she thinks Saber is taking him away from her since Saber is stronger than her and can protect him better hahaha. Taiga really loves Shirou. Hmmm I see, so the Matou don’t have magic circuits anymore and are really just a family that used to be magi, but still retain knowledge of magic etc. Shinji really just thinks of this whole thing like a game, huh? It was so cute how Rin and Saber glared at Shirou for meeting Shinji by himself haha. Although I can understand Saber’s frustration with Shirou when he always tries to prevent her from fighting etc, it was super reckless of her to go to Ryuudou Temple by herself. I always find Assassin/Sasaki Kojirou to be super cool, because he’s really amazing at having the capability to fend off against Saber with his skill and technique as a samurai. Oh, and seriously, Saber and Shirou should really be thankful to Rin, if it wasn’t for her, the two of them would just be super stubborn in their respective positions and beliefs and be unable to understand the other person. Rin is the best~ loved it when she teased Shirou after he carried Saber back home even though she already knew what happened. But yeah, seriously though, Shirou can get pretty frustrating about how he keeps treating Saber like a girl so she shouldn’t fight etc, like dude, be realistic please, she’s gonna have to fight eventually whether you like it or not, the war isn’t so easy that you can keep her safe.

I guess I’ll always love how proper Shirou is, stuff like properly greeting Saber in the morning even when he’s in a rush and apologising to Rin for forcing her to kick out Sakura when he should have done it for her safety a long time ago is just very nice to see. Sure, Shirou is wishy washy and can be very indecisive and not even know what he himself wants, but he’s such a good guy, it’s hard to really get too annoyed with him. Not sure how I feel about Shirou saying that Ayako getting attacked by a mugger and needing to run away might have been good in a sense to teach her some femininity, like I know he means it in a “good way” but seriously, that’s not important considering what happened! Shirou and Illya eating dorayaki together is such a nice image, especially since Illya never got the chance to experience simple stuff like that stuck in a castle. Lmaoo at Shirou accidentally seeing Saber changing to get into the shower and she’s so whatever about it lol. I always found Archer’s talk with Shirou about it being impossible to save all people much more realistic against Shirou’s ideals, but I think hearing it again when you know who Archer actually is makes it even more saddening and “real” because you know how much Archer personally experienced by believing in and trying to achieve this “ideal”.

Although skipping school is bad, I do enjoy the spars Saber and Shirou have in order to give him battle experience on making the best decision at critical moments. I think it’s the most realistic approach on what they can do to train him against Servants since he obviously doesn’t have the power to really win against them. LOLL at Illya casually saying Sella told her that it wouldn’t be fun to play with Shirou because Illya needs to kill him soon anyway. Like, yep, okay, see ya Illya lol. But I guess it’s kinda cute that even though Sella told her that, Illya herself still decided to wait at the park and see if he would come since she thinks it’s fun being with him, and I guess he feels the same since he bothered to pass by the park. But yeah, it’s pretty saddening how Illya was raised all this time knowing nothing about her parents’ love for her and having to live in the environment where her grandfather raised her as a Master to listen to him and kill anyone in their way to winning the war. Saber getting attached to the baby lion plush she got from Taiga is really cute, I guess since it reminds her of something familiar in her life (when she raised a lion cub for a month), she can’t help but feel soft towards it. On the other hand, lmaoo at Rin punching Shinji and not even caring hahaaha, I can understand why she would, but dang is she ruthless and just making things worse for Shirou by telling him that she’s living with Shirou etc loll. I’m still happy that she punched him though, he totally deserves it. I love how Shirou just listens to Rin and swallows the jewel without even questioning what it is. But it’s nice that it’ll help him keep his Magic Circuit on all the time so he can accustom himself to using magic without having to go through the whole process of risking his life to turn the circuit “on”, definitely more efficient if he can master this! It’s definitely contradictory but amusing how in the end, the best teacher for Shirou probably is Archer lol, since he understands his problems best compared to Rin who is too capable and so doesn’t really understand the problems of an ordinary person learning magic lol.

I’m not surprised Shirou met up with Shinji at school and ended up getting caught in his activation of the boundary field, but dang did I like how decisive Shirou was the whole time during battle. He understood he couldn’t fend off against Rider, and he wasn’t shocked too much by the kick from Rider and was able to use a command spell to get Saber to help him. I also liked how he really was ready to kill Shinji if he really had to in order to stop the boundary field (that could have melted all the people in it). Shinji is such a shit though, I was so mad when I heard him talk about kicking Taiga when she told him to call the ambulance when he activated the boundary field. So glad Shirou thrashed him even if he got away in the end. Btw I love the Tiger Dojo segments, they’re hilarious hahaha. Although it was reckless of Shirou to go by himself, it’s good that the experience ended up making him realise he needs to fight alongside Saber and not prevent her from fighting. I thought it was really cute how Saber and Shirou finally came to a better compromise and shook hands, but then Rin appeared and they got all embarrassed haha. But the cutest thing was when Saber was so concerned about wanting the same casual clothes (since they were destroyed) and asked Rin for another set just because Shirou said it looked good on her before.

Overall, most of the stuff for now is pretty similar to the anime so it’s more of a refresh for me with added details. As usual, Rin is really the highlight for me though haha.

Much like the Fate/Zero post, this is mostly a set of notes which has already been released and is preserved here because of the difference editing makes. There was one completely insensitive, uninformed note and a note which I was writing down to be “more in character” which I’ve removed in all instances of the notes, though - it’s better you not know what was being said there.

Anyways, I think the really entertaining thing of putting me under the pump like this is that I have such an incomplete understanding of how the Fate/ universe works that the outcomes of everything create enough entertainment for those who’ve committed to said universe. The things that I do know might be really late-game though – such as the white-haired Servant being an alternate Shiro – so I have my own surprises to confirm.

As I mentioned in my relation to Rin, I forcibly cut it out of my life because my parents chose it for me – in short, no desire to hit the target, in one way of speaking.

LOL, that “I haven’t been sleeping lately” is relatable.

Medea is one of the only Servants that was originally a woman, so…it’s interesting to see she’s been given a chain as a method to keep up (but also vaguely annoying to see her have such a short skirt). A chain weapon seems to be the sort of weapon for an agile user, with possible sexual overtones (if you want to interpret it that way), so it seems like it came straight from a male fantasy of a woman.

Rin is the sort that places a lot of stock into obligations, I see.

I learnt how to read the word “mirage” in Japanese somewhat recently (in comparison to the basics, which I learnt through a CD-ROM maybe…15 or so years ago?). It’s shinkirou.

I find it interesting that these eps. are marked as Fate/Stay Night and the series is Fate/Stay Night UBW, because Deen/Stay Night (as I’ve been referring to the Deen version of F/SN) looks pretty different to Ufotable’s F/SN, judging by that “People die when they are killed” meme.

I seriously facepalmed when they tried to protect each other. One person should learn to stand down in the relationship for that to work.

Hmm…so this means Lancer’s Master is male, huh? (Why is that Master still a mystery anyway…?)

I facepalmed the third time (the second was soon after the first) when Emiya thought he could seriously protect Rin from Lancer. Knowing who Lancer’s Master is a much bigger priority right now, man – this isn’t a romcom!

I like Lancer’s sideways gaze, LOL.

*Archer comes in* - Well, hasn’t it been a while since we saw this guy? (voice drips with sarcasm)

Kuzuki is a Master…of the Naruto run. (LOL)

The subs suddenly turned yellow! What the heck?! (Prior to this, subs were white.) Update: Come to think of it, only Aniplex shows have yellow subs, while Funimation ones have white subs (although HiDive let you choose between white and black, the standard is white on the hardsubs). This might mean a switchover between who’s responsible for the show happened while this anime was airing.

Ooh, this I didn’t expect! Saber joined forces with Rin!

*Shiro fights swords with more swords* - For some reason, I feel like I need to play some Daft Punk right now. (I don’t even like them as an artist, even though I’m meant to be the EDM expert around here…)

This all but confirms Archer is actually a Shiro Emiya from a distant future.

This series peaked quite a few episodes ago. Now it’s just stretching for time.

Um, hey. Random question. Didn’t King Arthur draw Excalibur from the sword in the stone? Is that a stone or a tree stump? It’s hard to tell since the zoom quality is funny, but…if it’s a tree stump, someone got a crucial detail wrong. Update: Nup, it’s a stone. Forget I told you.

Having sacrificed myself for over a year for other people’s sake, I can’t say I agree that giving yourself up for others is a beautiful thing. This is speaking as someone who volunteers at a not-for-profit (the charity store). In fact, having thought long and hard about the fact I’ve completely gone down the wrong path from having taken this one opportunity I was given (note I did get rejected from a similar place before I got the position I did), I’ve thought, occasionally, that sort of thing is disgusting.

Did the Great B*stard even age 10 years while waiting for this new war…?

That’s the order they’re meant to be in, going from smallest to biggest laugh.)

Had to check Wikipedia, but Monohoshizao is the pole (?) wielded by Kojiro Sasaki…well, the correct term is nodachi (which I know better as ootachi from Touken Ranbu), but it’s referred to as a pole. To add something interesting to that, the ootachi I like the most (my beloved Taroutachi) is said to be 221 cm (throwing that into a converter, about 7.25 feet) and 4.5 kg (converting again, about 9.92 pounds)...which is basically something no human should be able to use, so if the pole is anything like Taroutachi...I have immense respect for this Assassin as well.

Assassin’s treatment here reminds me of Tora from Juuni Taisen…in a sense, they got what they wanted.

Update: Prior to this point, I had Silhouettes (by Avicii) playing in my head on occasion, notably when Archer was meeting his end. When Shirou came face-to-face with Saber’s grave, it switched to So Amazing by Luther Vandross. Although I normally don’t mention what I have on my mental playlist in notes like these, I just want to make note of that because it reflects the switch in mood. (Also, this is basically an extended transition into El-Melloi’s Case Files.)

Hmph. Yeah, nothing like hindsight to make something huge look small.

Sakura and Shinji’s relationship…it reminds me of a grumpy old man and his young daughter…(LOL?)

Ryudou’s reaction to romance reminds me of Tenya (from BnHA) in his more crazy moments.

All this talk about the Clock Tower is making me think that older!Waver will show up at any moment now…

…wa-hey? Well, *spits out some held-back laughter* whaddaya know? That’s the older Waver right there!

Ufotable’s older!Waver and Troyca’s older!Waver look fairly different. Ufotable’s isn’t as attractive because his hair has an artificial sheen to it and the man’s face looks more like a snake’s head in shape, so he looks a bit dumb. Update: Certainly Troyca’s Waver has a more egg-shaped head, but at least that makes his hair look nicer, no?

Post-credits segment. Keep watching.

Huh…that segment wasn’t very substantial. Maybe Hoshiai no Sora spoilt me on that front.

Waver OVA (REWATCH)

*yells* I still think Flat Escardos is a terrible name!

LOL, I think Waver just called out a bunch of political writers right there.

So who are these old people??? (Lennon Glasses and Old Lady here) I still don’t know. Update: You do find out later – Inorai is the old lady and Rocco is the old man.

Okay, so apparently the set of characters used for “Rail Zeppelin” is literally translated to Demon Eyes Collection Train...sounds like something out of Demon Slayer.

If Kayneth is the OG Lord and this Reines girl is the new one, how did Waver become gen. 2? *rewinds a little* She’s el-Melloi Archisorte, meaning that somehow she and Kayneth are blood-related (also note Monkey D Luffy = Luffy is his first name and Monkey is the last name with D being a middle initial, so Reines could have her names around the wrong way as well). Still doesn’t answer the Waver part of the question, though. Update: The character page of the official website says Reines is the rightful heir to the name “Lord (Lady?) El-Melloi”, but she appointed Waver to be the Lord while she waited to become of age and take the position.

As you know, I gotta question the guy’s (Waver) age. In Fate/Zero he was 19 and he looks much the same ten years later, so his approximate age range is 19 – 29 here. Wikipedia (which I linked earlier) says the anime this OVA is attached to occurs between the Grail Wars, meaning I might not be able to get an exact age. Update: “[A]lmost 10 years”, so I’d wager he’s on the back end of the age range (24 – 29).

Ooh, another good boy (Bram). I forgot he existed…and that’s kinda nasty that he’s got the bloodline of Sola-Ui in him. Update: Oh! Younger sister! That is nasty!

The word shisho (師匠), if I’m guessing the right characters, means “instructor” (or “teacher” if you wanna bend it that way). “Sir” is Waver’s title…I’m guessing that translatio choice is because he’s not a professor in title, assuming professor titles in this are given like they are in real life.

There’s something quite cute about Waver making such an indignant face…then again, he does have permanent worry lines on his face, so maybe not.

Like, whose bright idea was it to crush on the loli? Ravioli, ravioli, don’t crush on the loli! (Then again, I’m probaby worse, chasing after older men…)

Come to think of it, Ufotable is good at action motion (see exhibit A: Demon Slayer), but not free-flowing comedic motion like Waver falling over like this. That’s probably why the show jumped studios to Troyca (aside from divvying up the work of the Fate/ universe – Ei Aoki did F/Z, after all, so it makes sense he’d have some ability to take dibs on whatever works best for his studio…although he wasn’t too involved with this, I don’t think). Update: He was supervisor and storyboarder for this OVA.

Waver: Official butt monkey of the Clock Tower. Calling it now.

Troyca animates F/Z (however briefly)…I must say, they did a good job imitating Ufotable.

All I really remember from the first time around is the car chase, which really shows my priorities in anime…heh heh.

Troyca’s CGI is more noticeable than Ufotable’s, but they’re still on of the best studios for CGI, I think. That’s why they’re on my favourites list over Ufotable (since Ufotable, by general consensus, does better work but I think it looks more artificial in parts – case in point, Waver’s hair).

Setting up a mystery, like all stories, is very much about setting up the boundaries that you’re allowed to play in later. The only thing is that mysteries get more stringently judged for logic.

Hey, whaddaya know? Waver can fit Rider’s old shirt now! (Or maybe it’s the smaller version Waver implied was given to him during F/Z.)

“[W]hydunit” (in English) – LOL? There’s “whodunit”, but not “whydunit” – stick to “motive” or “modus operandi”, people.

I just want to say this about Mystic Messenger, while I’m here at the end of day 9 on Ray Route

(and I hope SPOILERS this -> SPOILERS <- goes SPOILERS without SPOILERS saying)

This is an absolute masterpiece.

21:31 completely destroyed me. It was so beautiful, I played through that VN twice, and both times, I cried just as hard.

Being a late fan has its spoilers“perks”. I felt like I knew everything that would happen, but I was wrong so many times, to my joy and my sadness. I knew about Saeran’s “dark” transformation, yet I expected, in a slightly twisted way, to enjoy it. Unfortunately… I wasn’t ready for the onslaught of sheer malice. When I saw the real situation, I thought I’d have to placate my abuser in order to survive. Maybe something clicked, since I hated talking to him, but every day I still longed to see him. In the midst of it, though, the dialogue options lit a small hope that I could save him. Somehow MC spoke jarring truth and warm empathy at the same time. It even seemed, because Saeran’s struggles mirrored my own, that Cheritz spoke the same encouragement to me as well.

Today, on Day 9, I’d received a call from Rika and learned that Saeran had gone missing. He’d been missing for a couple hours by the time I made it home and impatiently pulled up a blanket on the couch.

For a few minutes I argued with Rika, before she left abruptly. Seeing that Saeran Story Mode button I thought Yusss. Give me life. I was so glad Saeran showed up but man… I was not ready for this.

While I’m expecting “knock knock toy, it’s me ya boi” he showed up in my room?? While I’m sleeping in bed?? To just… talk with me??? That’s… adorable as fuck??? His sprite vanished, and the CG appeared. He looked straight at me with piercing eyes, but wasn’t lashing at me. He was looking right at me… in my bedroom in Mint Eye, curled under my blanket, in my 1-bedroom apartment. Standing right next to me.

Then he confirmed my hope!! Saeran was beginning to understand himself. He was changing.

It was so hard to tap the screen after each line. I didn’t want him to stop. Each time he spoke I was getting closer to the end of this moment.

Tap.

Then Saeran starts speaking in terms relative to himself about Ray. The game gives me options like “I’m only waiting for Ray” and for some reason I resent them. Why should I choose to abandon this broken boy in front of me? What about you? Saeran?

Saeran: Even now...it's so difficult to accept myself the way I am. I'm ruined beyond hope. Saeran: But...maybe it is possible for Ray.

Can’t I save you both?? I’ve been trying to save you this whole time. I’ve been trying to save you since the prologue in CS… with Seven in the Secret Ends… in spite of fate in V’s route.

Saeran: You miss Ray, don't you? Saeran: He was named Ray...in hopes that there will be no meaning to his name. Saeran: But you look a little sad every time I say that name.

I’m sobbing. Real tears. I hope the neighbors don’t hear anything…

Saeran: ...And it looks like you need Ray more than me.

It sounds like you’re saying goodbye…

Option: You're right. I need Ray.

No, I won’t leave you behind! I’m going to encourage Saeran with all I have until I can’t any more.

MC: Whoever you are...I hope you stay strong. Saeran: I wonder what your definition of strong is. Saeran: Please tell Ray about it.

Another gaming related ask is certainly one I can handle. Let’s see how this goes, shall we?

Game On Boyz

Makoto Naegi:

-As with most of his interests, he’s pretty content with whatever’s the most popular at the time

-He’ll play whatever the latest Mario or Pokemon game is and be happy with that

-He’s also the one most likely to suggest playing multiplayer games with everyone. This will include a variety of co-op and competitive games (Though he finally learned to stop suggesting Mario Party after it was banned for the 16th time. They still play it though)

Leon Kuwata:

-Really likes the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games

-He’s actually pretty decent on the drums and guitar in those games. Can play on hard and expert on a lot of songs

-For the love of god though, don’t let him sing. He’s terrible at it and any attempts to try it end in failure

Leon:This game’s bullshit if it thinks I can’t sing! Let’s try aga-Everyone else in the room: NO!

-He claims he can play Through the Fire and Flames on Expert and will fight anyone who challenges that claim (Spoiler alert: he’s a liar. He barely lasts 10 seconds before wiping out)

-He gets the others to play with him sometimes. 9 times outta 10 things usually end in a shouting match because SOMEONE keeps screwing up and causing them to fail (Spoiler alert 2: It’s usually Hagakure)

Chihiro Fujisaki:

-Usually prefers NES/SNES era games in general

-Really good at finding/exploiting glitches in older games. That or finding glitches and utterly breaking the game

-But his favorite game to play is actually Animal Crossing. He likes the art style of it (even though he knows it doesn’t help his already girly image)

-Enjoys taking care of his town to the best of his ability. He puts a lot of thought in what public works projects he puts up. There are also lots of hybrid flowers everywhere that are very nice to look at

-He easily attains a perfect town status and pays off his house in the game

-Always really sad when one of his favorite villagers moves away

-He eventually convinces Owada and Ishimaru to also get the game. They all visit each others towns frequently and help one another find the items they want

Mondo Owada:

-He doesn’t play games very often, but will play Roller Coaster Tycoon every now and again for the nostalgia factor

-But he gave up trying to make decent parks a long time ago.

-No, he tries to make the absolute worst park possible when he plays now

-Coasters that crash, rides that never end, removing all restroom stalls, any way he can make the park as terrible as possible, he does it. He finds it absolutely hilarious the way things can go wrong in it

-Sometimes Ishimaru is with him when he plays and gets stressed watching him

“Bro! You can’t do that! People will die if the tracks aren’t connected!”“Fuckin’ watch me!”“Langu- MONDO NO! SAFETY IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF AN AMUSEMENT PARK ENVIRONMENT!”

-Ishimaru will just take control sometimes. Owada doesn’t mind though, since it gets him to lighten up a little by playing a game for once

Kiyotaka Ishimaru:

-Ishimaru never played a video game before attending Hope’s Peak

-He played his first one with Naegi after finally starting to warm up to his classmates

-It was a basic platformer game that he refuses to ever touch again after failing at it so spectacularly for several hours

-He eventually finds the Brain Age series of games and finds himself enjoying those more than anything

-He’s usually content just watching others play games more than playing them himself though (and he gets super into it too. Lots of shouting ensues)

Hifumi Yamada:

-He normally plays visual novel type games, mostly based on other works he likes

-Really it’s mostly Princess Piggles games he plays

-He’s helped contribute artwork in the past for a fan game about Princess Piggles in the past.

((I’m sorry I can’t think of more for Yamada, but I just don’t know VN games that well outside of Danganronpa and Ace Attorney. Unless you want his favorite game to be Hatoful Boyfriend, which I am frankly ok with))

Byakuya Togami:

-”I am a Togami. I do not have time to be engaging in activities as frivolous as ‘playing video games’”

-Everyone knows he secretly plays Tetris when nobody’s looking. No one calls him out on this

-Mostly because the last time someone tried, they were greeted with an hour long lecture on why they sucked and how they’re life would be ruined if they told anyone (Spoiler alert 3: It was still Hagakure)

-He’s actually stupid good at Tetris too. If someone could ask him without getting their head bitten off, he’d claim it’s a good destressor for him.

-He will occasionally join in on game nights when they occur and usually ends up being one of the more competitive players in whatever they play

Yasuhiro Hagakure:

-He’s the one that finds the weirdest indie or flash games on the internet

-He usually does this early in the morning. Like, 3 AM early.

-Sometimes he’ll wake others up just to tell someone about his latest discovery (Spoiler alert 4: It’s usually Naegi, and he hates it every time)

-The only time anyone ever cared about one of his ’discoveries’ was when he found QWOP

-Everyone but him could just not wrap their heads around the game

-Hagakure on the other hand, was absolutely amazing at it and made the guy on screen actually look normal while running

Apologies for the delays on answering this, but I was a bit busy lately. What business exactly? Oh, just graduating high school and getting hit in the face by someones cap after they threw it in the air…

They hurt a lot more than I thought they would

In 2010 on Valentine’s Day s1 called me on my phone in my breast-pocket (I am anti-phone-carrying usually) while I was walking by a frozen lake; I walked by James Madison Park where a homeless Black man was throwing bread at / to ducks saying ‘Stop fighting each other and love each other!’ Wisconsin seems so medieval / Gothic with spiral staircases, projector rooms. I gained way too many resources over the last 9 years without understanding my neighbors and now see maybe they had the same thoughts and feelings and understood the Symbology(?) in Lorrie Moore novels and stuff that I bypassed since I took them to be female personality-mongering and only liked Robert Olmstead but there again only ‘The Coldest Night’ b/c it’s the Korean War!

Day 9 Thoughts

Tadah!

hhhhAha today was stressful. I kept getting worried I was going to accidentally land a bad end, or that I was hitting all of the wrong options. In fact, even right now I’m worried orz. This might be a little short because I haven’t been able to gather all of my thoughts properly, maybe. Still a content warning, if anything from the past few days stressed you out, so will the first few chats and them being mentioned in this post!

I went through all of this day hoping that I was hitting all the right options, and personally what I chose was insisting that Saeran needs to take care of himself, that Rika was manipulating him, and that Saeran didn’t scare me. Options kind of like that? It was rough, but I’ve already bought Day 10 and it looks like there’s a new branch point so *sweats*.

Oh, I also insisted a lot that we weren’t going to be apart of Mint Eye.

All through today Rika and Saeran keep threatening the cleansing ceremony, and hurting me. Moreso Saeran on the last part, but we actually get to talk to Rika a few times and you can tell she’s pissed. Not in a super obvious way, but moreso in front of you she’s trying to look unbothered, and then we see a VN of her fussing about in her weird throne room.

...haha...

The first chat of the day is kind of okay, but the next VN is not. Saeran comes in pretending to be Ray for you, trying to get a reaction out of you and mess with you more, and it results in him trying to get you to kiss him. And, ah...So, there’s an option to do that, or to push him away, and I know yall know I love Saeran but I pushed that motherfucker back. He’s not in his right mind because of the drugs so basically fuck that shit. I’ll try the weird ‘kiss’ scene on a bad end play through.

When we push him, he ends up hitting his head. I guess Mc pushes him fucking hard because he has this moment where he ‘slips’ back into being(?) Ray. He’s not playing around, and ‘Ray’ ends up having a breakdown because he’s hurt us, or he believes he has. As far as I can tell, ‘Saeran’ never actually hit us, just scared the fuck out of us and either pinned us against the wall or floor. Well, physically he didn’t hurt us. We do get starved for a day.

This is where Rika starts to get pissed more, because you’re managing to get a control over Saeran in general. It gets discussed in a later chat, so lemme type about a few things first before I get into that.

I think this VN, and one later on, is interesting because ‘Ray’ talks about how he’s never existed, how he is Saeran and the ‘devilish’ side is also a part of him. How both parts of him are scared, and he never feels scared when he’s with us. But even though he’s admitting that, he ends up darting out of the room because he wants to protect us from when his devilish side takes over.

This gets referenced later on as well, but before that we get a few more chats with Saeran and Rika. In between those, V gets a chance to visit us, and it looks like he’s working on a way to help Saeran! (Thank god). I could go step by step through these chats, but the main plot points on these days is that Saeran keeps having breakdowns and lapses in his strong persona, and Rika is getting more and more mad that we’re able to ‘control’ him better than her. We even get a great chat with her one on one where she talks about how you can’t depend on anyone, while she’s literally making Saeran and the cult depend on her the most.

It’s....annoying, because she describes manipulation pretty much word for word in some circumstances, but then swears she’s not doing it. Right...not like the elixir is terrible either, huh. At this point I feel like the game is going to end up with Rika and V having their own spat while we try to help Saeran out, and V sacrificing himself as a distraction. Hopefully not literally sacrificing himself, though...

He does make another appearance with Saeran, though, in the garden, and honestly it’s a little scary. Saeran is currently being looked for in Mint Eye because he ran off, his head hurting and feeling confused by everything, and brought a gun with him?? He hides in the garden, and V covers for him when he’s almost spotted. Of course when Saeran realizes who he is, he panics again, and even threatens to shoot V. And V just...sits there calmly and tries to calm him down. Jesus christ... But he manages to avoid being shot, and after a small panicked talk Saeran heads off again. He just keeps running and running...

We do get a chat with him where he tells us he’s been vomiting and it all smells like chemicals. I’m assuming it’s because he’s been drinking the elixir a lot, and once a lot of it is puked back up, he’s slowly able to start gathering his thoughts. That elixir is some wild shit ;;;

Because he keeps running away and Rika is busy sending people after him, our cleansing ceremony is thankfully put on hold. Rika was damn excited too, because she brewed up a stronger version of the elixir, which makes me assume that she truly knows how bad it is to take. All of that bullshit of ‘the weak must take her elixir to understand the saviors word’ must have really meant that those who had to take it were too strong for her to control, so she had to weaken them down in order for them to listen to her. So...She gets pissy finding out that Saeran listens to us more than her, haha. It’s still sad, because she does basically say that Saeran is a weapon for her to use, and it’s kind of obvious that she only views him like that.

Saeran, after running around a lot, does end up coming back to our room, but thankfully he’s pretty calm and quiet. He promises that we’re not going to be hurt, and he just talks to us. He chats about how ‘Ray’ is a part of him, and it gets to the point where it seems like he understands Ray is just a persona of his, and he keeps using that side of him as a seperate person (in this conversation) to try to apologize to us. Saying things like how Ray is in a corner of his heart, hoping that you’ll forgive him and understanding that you might not and willing to ask for forgiveness for ages, stuff like that. I think it might have to do with him still struggling to come to terms about his personas, and the fact that he’s probably too ashamed to come right out and try to ask for forgiveness.

Aaaa, my thoughts are so all over the place, I am sorry. There was a lot of waiting with this day, and I was mainly anxious over if I was picking the right choices to try and express that I cared about Saeran as a whole, rather than bits and pieces of him, to try and encourage some good healthy thoughts for him. It sort of worked, and V helped too in trying to convince Saeran to leave Mint Eye, especially with me. But it seems like by the end of the day, Saeran is just focused on getting *us* out, because he doesn’t think he can change enough to be able to escape Mint Eye.

Which is really sad ;;; I felt so bad when he implied that in a chat, talking about how he wished he could just watch the sky all day.

Right now, the last chat was the RFA being able to access the messenger. Jaehee and Zen welcome you, try to make sure you’re okay, while it appears that V and Jumin are busy. V, they don’t know, and Jumin is still being investigated by the Prime Minister... And Seven is apparently AFK.

And, haha, next VN confirms the worst. Seven is pouring over these files that V gave him, and Vanderwood rings the bell. Which, hey cool, a bell, but when Seven answers it Vanderwood doesn’t talk, and then it appears someone was forcing him to get Seven to open the door.

Have no doubt that it was someone working for the Prime Minister. I am...scared. Poor Seven ;;; He gets handcuffed and taken away with Vanderwood, and none of the RFA know....

I told myself after the chat I was going to call Yoosung, because I missed his voice and he wasn’t in the chat (I may or may not have tried calling him when it was just me and Saeran, and sometimes Rika, in the chat...), but I decided to call Saeran for shiggles. I thought he wouldn’t answer, but...he actually did.

He answered, and he was running from something, and managed to get somewhere. I don’t know where, because he hung up the phone and said we were distracting him, and I just...oooohghghgh baby please...;;;; You’re finally getting a clearer mind what are you doINGGG AAAAAAAAA

My thoughts on and analysis of the V route

I did play the V route and so far I got the Good End, Normal End, Bad End on day 9 and today and the Bad End on day 7, therefor effectively filling all my albums. As for analysis, there is sadly very little too analyse plot wise, in all honesty. Despite it’s overdramatic and pseudo-philosophical nature there wasn’t really a lot to pick apart and find the hidden meaning behind. As for my thoughts, if anyone really cares to read this, I was quite frankly a little disappointed with the route and especially the eventual conclusions in form of the Normal and Good End. @promiscuous-jalapeno wrote a very good piece on the V route - which you can read here - where she mentioned a lot of the things that bugged me about the route and some points I disagree on so here it comes:

In short, I can only say that while I found it quite interesting to play, I have to admit that I found the route highly underwhelming altogether, although I will wait with my final judgement until the After Story is out. But if you know me, you know I like into detail so let me tell you what I thought about specific aspects of the game:

Honestly, I was never the biggest fan of V. People who know me know that. I blame him for Mint Eye almost as much as I blame Rika for it and in my opinion Saeran was much more deserving of a route and redemption than him.

So, when the route was announced, I was already a little bit salty but figured I give him a change to prove himself. He is pretty and I did like the idea of romancing him, since I saw potential for his character.

As a writer myself, I was majorly disappointed. V was a bland character at the beginning and the story ended with him remaining a bland character. Other than his self-sacrificing he really doesn’t seem to have a personality.

Despite the fact that I’m no big fan of Saeyoung, Yoosung or Jaehee those are distinguished characters with likes, dislikes, problems, talents, flaws and many things that make them human. V has nothing going for him.

There were certain parts of the route where I actually went aww and came close to liking him as a character, but then he started with his peaceful solutions to problems he shouldn’t even try solving himself and I was done.

All in all, as someone who writes headcanons, fics and more and therefor invests a lot of time into these characters this route was in no way helpful in actually getting to know V and that’s just sad.

His Mother:

That whole thing bothered me immensely. I’ve seen people enjoy it, liking that whole backstory part but I couldn’t have cared less for a single one of those diary entry VN even if I tried.

This was V’s route and yet I learned more about his mother than I did about him. I think if I count, more VN were dedicated to her than to the actual protagonist of the story.

What kind of thinking is that? I could have gone well without all those extra VN if those we had ended up actually focusing on V or even adding to the progress of the story, but they absolutely didn’t.

Please, explain to me how his mothers very detailed past is in any way relevant to the events that transpire during the route? They don’t even explain why V is the man he is, not really.

The Plot:

While we’re already at it, let’s talk about the plot, because frankly I think they made a mistake choosing this setting and it’s obvious that they didn’t really think the whole two years in the past thing through.

There were a couple of continuity issues with the entire thing, but that can happen so I don’t really want to focus on that. I’d much rather talk about the setting and why I think it would have been better as a Saeran route.

Despite this being V’s route, you not only barely get to romance V - but we’ll get to that later - but you actually barely get to interact with him at all. And due to setting the interactions like the car phone calls are extremely cringeworthy.

Personally I would have preferred the entire thing having been set in the same time line as the original routes just a little later with Rika gone and V having to deal with what he’s caused and how to move on.

That way interactions would not only have been more natural, they also would have made more sense as well as actually giving you the opportunity to romance and help V properly.

In this route, you really don’t help him like you do in the others. It’s more about saving yourself than V and the change in his heart that does happen doesn’t seem natural at all.

One moment he is telling you how he loves and adores Rika and how he needs to sacrifice himself and the next moment he realizes it’s obsession and not love and let’s everyone else take the reigns.

That change came way too fast and therefor seemed rushed and rather unnatural to me. The general flow of the entire story did. At first is was far too slow and then it turned into a rushed clusterfuck towards the end.

The Romance:

This is honestly one of the parts I am the saltiest about and I don’t even know where to begin with this honestly. Cheritz is aware that MM is an otome game, right? Why can’t I romance the main character?!

Like I’m not even a V fan, but even I felt let down but the romance aspect of this route because there was literal none. The entire routes it’s Rika, Rika, Rika and ‘I don’t know how to love, keep away from me’

To me it felt like someone had taken the worst parts of Yoosung’s and Saeyoung’s route and smashed them together to create this. It was honestly so frustrating and the suddenly ‘romantic endings’ were unsatisfying.

Worst of all, the romance we did get wasn’t really all too nice either. It was a constant cycle of MC trying to save V and V trying to sacrifice himself for MC. They don’t even get to know one another?! How is that even love?

The RFA:

Where were they? I’m seriously confused. Zen disappeared for an entire day and it literally changed nothing. You barely get to talk to any of the RFA, actually, despite them being kind of the focus of this game.

I learned nothing new about them, I didn’t get to build any friendship with them which made them suddenly trusting me and caring so much for me really awkward and from a writing point illogical.

I mean technically as a player you get to know Jumin through the backstory VN but he doesn’t know that and neither does MC so why do they talk about her like she is some saint and she cares so much.

Also, and I want to mention this specifically because it bugged the hell out of me: I literally lost all respect or faith I had in Yoosung. He was a huge disappointment and I’ll never see his character the same way.

I really enjoyed how unapologetic everyone else in the RFA was of Rika, as they should be after everything she’s done , but Yoosung even attempting to excuse it despite not knowing of her past made me rage

Rika:

Ah yes, the grand bitch herself. Honestly, I really hope that anyone who ever posted positivity for her feels really, really bad after playing this route because there is literally nothing that could excuse her choices.

She is a horrible person and on top of that they really added a notch of completely mental in this route, making all conversations with her hard to follow and boring as hell.

In fact both V and Rika have this tendency to talk in code and comparison and I cannot hear the word sun anymore. Everything seemed so pretentious after some time, like two hipsters discussing Nietzsche at Starbucks.

Her backstory didn’t really surprise nor touch me, mainly because I too suffered bullying and abuse by my parents probably even more severe than hers and I do not go around torturing and drugging people. Not impressed.

The whole look into V’s and Rika’s past made me extremely uncomfortable as well. Their ‘love’ was really sick and unhealthy and what weirded me out was how strangely sexual everything seemed.

I mean don’t get me wrong, I love me some Wolf!Zen and Bad End Jumin, but with V and Rika it seemed so out of place and plain uncomfortable, especially the whole photo thing…

But above all, and I cannot stretch this enough, I find it utterly disgusting that you basically have the option to romance Rika. To even think that was okay to put into the route is beyond me.

That worn out idea that every villanious woman has to be over sexualized and in this case even homoerotically is a cheap writing point to begin with, but executed the way it is, it’s like a slap to the face.

How come Rika gets to cuddle it up with MC in multiple CG’s and flirt the entire time but Jaehee’s entire goddamn route has none of that? That is seriously just insulting to the players in my opinion. Moving on before I have an aneurysm.

Saeran:

Loved him! Hands down the highlight of the entire route. I’d always dreamed about his route being similar to this route, with you working with Mint Eye to take down the RFA instead of the other way around.

This was like a taste of a dream, really. He was what I’d hoped V to be; romantic, devoted, actually pursuable to some extend and beyond everything you actually get to know more about him.

His character is really well expanded in this route and for a writing who always wants to get to know the character better, this addition to the game was like a dream come true.

Beyond just getting to know more about him, however, he actually gave some room for interpretations, analysis and discussion. Is he really dead? Is Ray the real personality or Saeran?

He made me laugh. He made me cry. He actually made me go through the emotional rollercoaster the route should have been but only was due to him. He saved the whole thing for me, because he was actually human.

The Art:

I was a little disappointed by the art as well, if I’m honest. It’s not as bad and rushed as the DLC art was, but also not entirely the same style as the original. The fact that they can’t stay consistent within the same game is sad.

The colour palette was constantly changing between the CG’s as well as the CG’s in comparison to the in game play. Just look at Jumin in the picture with V’s father and the one with his own. The skin doesn’t even add up.

On top of that some of the colours were way too vivid and made some of the art seem flat for lack of shading. And don’t let me get started on those pathetic chibi pictures of Jumin and V.

I was actually looking forward to the backstory parts of those two, I even wrote a fic about that, but with the art looking like super poor chibi’s like not even the cute kind, I was extremely let down.

As for the CG’s themselves, they weren’t all too overwhelming either. A lunch box, a salad and an old ass book? Thanks for the amazing additions to my character albums.

Not to mention the amazing V album that while it actually expanded quite a lot, most of it was useless since it involved Rika or his mother. 3 CG’s. We get 3 MC x V CG’s and two of those look like MC is forcing herself on V. Great!

Also was it just me or did V look kind of blurry the entire time? Not in the CG’s but in the game he looked kind of fuzzy compared to the old design. I mean not that there is much of a difference with anyone, despite 2 years…

The Voice Acting:

Some were amazing, some were mediocre and of some I was really disappointed, namely Rika. Since we non-Korean’s rely heavily on the text below we obviously pay a bigger focus on that.

Now reading the subtitles Rika’s VA really underperformed on this one. Rika had some very dramatic scenes and a lot of anger and pain that were conveyed beautifully while written but fell flat while spoken.

I honestly expected more vigor with this one, because as an actor myself I know how much fun it can be to get those really dramatic slightly over the top roles. It didn’t look like the VA was enjoying it at all.

She could have screamed so much more, could have actually sounded angrier and match the facial expressions Rika was making while talking, but never did. A grave opportunity missed.

Ray on the other hand. I wasn’t really a fan of the VA in the normal route but he really stepped up his game with this one and I loved it. Emotions to rip your heart out. Once again, saving the route.

Conclusion:

While I enjoyed the route with the new content and general excitement it provided, I was overall disappointed with what seemed to be a lack of thought and care put into creating the route.Of course I am still thankful to Cheritz for creating at all, but as a content creator myself who gets literally nothing out of it, I still make sure to keep certain standards. Let’s hope for a better Saeran route…

Hey everybody here’s my completely unasked for list of headcanons on what sort of videogames each Mega Man character plays.

Please note this will be heavily influenced by @megamanrecut because that’s just how I roll and Russian’s done a great job of giving personality to the personality-less, so that’s just kind of filling the empty void where canon should be.

Okay, so

#1 Proto Man - kicks ass at bullet hell and shooter games. Doesn’t really play much anymore, but always willing to show off if someone else is playing. Also weirdly good at rhythm games, bizarrely. He’s naturally decent at just about any game, really, which pisses off anyone stupid enough to challenge him.

#2 Roll - Girl will kick your ass at any fighting game you could name, and do it with style. Has memorized the combos to every fatality in Mortal Kombat, and got a Flawless Victory against Akuma in Street Fighter. Also likes racing games and multiplayer shooters; basically anything competitive she’s down for. Has a soft spot for Metroid since she feels like Samus and her have a lot in common. Would play a game for days straight just to beat you at it.

#3 Ring Man (and ensemble) - boy is as basic as it gets. Plays pretty much any game you would find in the front display of a video game store, and nothing else. Claims to be great at video games but really that’s because he doesn’t play competitively, ever. Holds all the high scores in Super Punch Out because he won’t let anyone else play.

#4 Guts Man - Too complicated; couldn’t figure out controls. Likes to spectate, though, to Ring Man and the others’ dismay.

#5 Cut Man - MS Paint counts as a videogame, right?

#6 Rock - Boy is a strategy game prodigy. Once beat Fire Emblem Gaiden on lunatic difficulty with no deaths, and got zero street cred because neither Roll nor Doctor Light understand enough about Fire Emblem to see what insane level of bullshit that actually is. Has Genealogy of the Holy War preordered and marked the release date on his calendar so that he can count down the days. Once played Corpse Party on a dare, and shocked everyone when he cleared the whole game 100% and got all endings. In three days.

(This is as noncanon as noncanon gets but I don’t care I’m sticking to it) Lives a secret second gamer life where he’s lowkey obsessed with visual novels. After the inevitable “am I a bad person for liking this game?” crisis, he wound up loving VNs. Claims to play eroge for the plot, and genuinely means it; gets easily flustered and embarrassed when people suggest otherwise. Used to go at a snail’s pace during ~those~ scenes because it was so embarrassing he could hardly stand to look at it to read the text, but now it doesn’t even faze him anymore, like a true veteran. Has gone down the list from Katawa Shoujo to Hatoful Boyfriend to Fate/Stay Night to DRAMAtical Murder, except for that weird part where he actually BUYS the games instead of downloading them online (seriously, who does that?).

#7 Doctor Light - Doesn’t play videogames much because it’s bad for character or whatever, but played Tetris a bit and enjoyed it. Occasionally Korobeiniki will come on the stereo when he’s working in the lab, and he always turns it up.

#8 Doctor Wily - Claims Bertie the Brain was a rip off of his game that he made himself, but otherwise doesn’t pay much attention to videogames, aside from one idea he had to take over the world by using an extremely addicting game that would suck the will out of weak-minded humans. Later ditched it because it was too far fetched, Cold Steel took its place within a week.

#9 Elec Man - If his programming would allow it he’d probably spend all his “work” time in one of those poker rooms online, but sadly it doesn’t. Has occasionally used the built in solitaire app on his work computer to kill time in between jobs though.

#10 Time Man - He himself doesn’t really care for videogames, but when he’s on break a bunch of the guys will beg him to come play Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgehog, and he’ll agree because he’s just a nice guy like that. Crazy good at platformers, Mario and Sonic really are spectator sports with Time Man at the controller. Has beaten them in their entirety before, but doesn’t get to do it often because his breaks don’t really last that long. Bets on how far he’ll get before he dies or is called away is one of the RIP’s favorite pastimes.

Paco Reviews a Visual Novel #2

Finished playing through one the other day. I feel like doing these reviews might end up being a thing now. Spoilers and the like under the cut.

Went out of town for a few days for family stuff. So spent my time playing through a random visual novel I came across. This time it is DS: Dal Segno.

Plot Summary: *Insert Protagman’s name here* is an orphan who’s been living with his aunt since his parents’ death. He’s been handling as best he can but it still eats at him from time to time. Until he hears of a technological island called Kazana, that has been designed so that it is Summer all year round. It carries the slogan “Where no one is ever unhappy”. He takes this to heart and decides to move there and enroll in school. Upon arrival he is greeted by an AI named Ame. While getting a tour she seemingly trips off the side of a cliff. Forgetting that she doesn’t have a physical body, Protagman jumps off after her. He awakens to find that he landed in the sea and was saved by another girl from the island. After this Protagman discovers that he now has the ability to see the “happiness levels” above people’s heads. It’ll go up when they are happy and drop when they aren’t. This makes it a little hard for him to focus in class, so Ame nominates him to be a producer for the christmas beauty pageant. He now needs to find a candidate for it.

Overall thoughts: Better than I had anticipated. The prologue is super convoluted and throws a million concepts at you at the same time. But once it gets rolling it’s fairly easy to get through. Characters are nice and varied, the writing is pretty good for a straight forward romance-comedy. Music is entirely unmemorable. And the art is fairly standard. The game shines in it’s use of misdirection. It starts each route by throwing a trope or cliche at you. Which resulted in me trying to predict where each route was going. I was 0 for 5. Each route had twists that blindsided me. Also I didn’t specify the protag’s name because this game let’s you choose it. Which is neat for a visual novel that is pretty much fully voiced. Individual Route Reviews:

Himari: The girl who saved Protagman from drowning. She is a free spirit who just does what she wants. She also has a friend in a talking hat she wears on her head. In this route, Protag chooses her for the pageant. She tentatively agrees. In the time they spend preparing she falls in love with protag. They then date until abruptly one day she breaks up with him. It turns out she too can see happiness levels. But also that she can control and manipulate them. Consciously and unconsciously. She believes she has been manipulating Protag’s emotions the entire time they’ve been together. And to an extent, she has. Throughout the route things have been oddly straight forward with little to no conflict. Long story short, Protag doesn’t care and works to eliminate her power and succeeds. And in doing so his feelings don’t change. He still cares for her just the same. This was the first route I played and the first time I saw firsthand the game’s use of twists. The twist here is perhaps a little too subtle. Most of the foreshadowing went completely over my head and I was caught off guard by the twist. It’s not as well done as the others but it is good. 7/10.

Hazuki: The student council president and daughter of the school principal. She is very consumed in her work and reliable. Protagman chooses her for the pageant. In doing so he asks her out. She reluctantly accepts and suggest they do a trial run of dating. But at the start of christmas break she leaves town for business. She spends very little time with him at all until one night she sends a text to him at midnight asking to go out on a date. Her attitude is much more bubbly and fun. They spend the rest of break going on dates in the middle of the night. When school starts back up Protag meets with Hazuki in the student council office. She then tells him they need to prep for going out. This confuses Protagman as they’ve been seeing each other for most of break. Hazuki denies this, saying she had been going to sleep early every night. She writes this all off as dreams protagman was having. Protagman shows her the text logs and sends her into a panic. That night “Hazuki” asks Protagman out on a date again at midnight. He meets up and she acts like nothing happened. He asks who she really is and she pauses. She quietly says “Haruhi” and runs away. When he tells Hazuki this it only makes the situation worse. Haruhi was Hazuki’s twin sister who died in a car accident when they were children. Skipping ahead, Protagman learns that it was actually Hazuki that died and Haruhi is suffering from multiple personalities brought on by trauma. She is Hazuki 90% of the time. But being with Protag has brought forth Haruhi. She decides to continue living on using both personalities at the same time. This one was actually pretty darn good. Probably the most unpredictable route. But it did drag a bit in the middle. 9/10.

Io: A girl in Protagman’s class suffering from that one delusion thingy that apparently is common in anime. She calls herself the daughter of darkness and she believes herself to be a demon. Protagman is intrigued by her and asks her to be in the pageant. She constantly refers to it as a bid for power and a way to earn new slaves for her demon army. The pageant also leads to them dating (as is the pattern you may have noticed). Protagman comes to learn she is an author and all these delusions are more or less her stories. Slowly throughout the route she becomes more and more focused on the stories. Setting aside protagman at times. Until one day she flips out at him screaming that she needs to write and can’t stop writing. He leaves her alone for a few days only to realize that she had not left her room at all in that time and passed out from exhaustion. Leaving herself in a coma. Ame (the AI) tells him the truth. That her father had passed away, not only that be she also has a power like Protagman. She is able to enter the world of her writing in her sleep. She has written her father into that world and has decided to stay there. Hence the coma. Ame links their minds and Protagman enters the dream world. He finds her stuck in a mental ice prison. With an internal struggle playing out. Her true self is distraught and never wants to leave. Whereas her delusional demon self wants to wake up and actually see the real world. Protagman helps her come to terms with her father’s death and wakes her up. Was much more emotional than I was expecting from what I thought to be the comedy character. Only complaint is that there wasn’t nearly enough foreshadowing for me. The twist didn’t seem like it came about as naturally as the others. 7/10

Noeri: *sigh* Cousin of the protagonist. Come one Japan. Why you gotta be creepy. Anyway, her whole schtick is that she wants to be like a trope from anime she likes. The “little sister” love interest character. She introduces herself to people as his sister and he constantly corrects her. He is at such a loss for not finding a pageant contestant that he asks her. She immediately agrees. During the pageant she confesses to him in front of the audience and he accepts. He thinks back to her and her mother, his aunt. They took him and his actual sister in when their mother died and tried to treat them like family. But Protagman always kept his distance. So now that he is actively in a relationship with his cousin, she is overjoyed. But the “little sister” trope that she was pushing early on continues. To an extent where she begins relaying memories of their childhood together. But Protagman is concerned. She’s relaying not her own memories, but his actual sister’s. Eventually she doesn’t say that they are dating, but rather they are in fact related. Then she stops recognizing people at school. Her memories are actively being corrupted. She truly believes herself to be his sister. Protagman learns that his actions as a child may have resulted in Noeri believing that he wanted nothing to do with her and her mother. So she made a wish on the island that she could become his family. This wish was inadvertently granted by Ame. Corrupting Noeri’s memories. Protagman manages to get through to her and fixes the issue. Relative routes in VN’s give me the creeps. But that seems to have been the intention here. 5/10.

Ame: The island AI. Protagman can’t find anyone to do the pageant, so he asks Ame to do it since she put him into this mess. She agrees. Ame’s goal as an AI is to keep everyone on the island happy. She can also see happiness levels, but at least she has a reason. After the pageant she becomes concerned with what “true happiness” is. She asks around but doesn’t get the answers that she’d like. One student suggests it is love. Ame doesn’t fully understand love and asks Protagman. He gives her the textbook definition but that doesn’t help. Himari and Noeri suggest she go on dates to learn about it firsthand. They nominate Protagman, and he agrees despite not really wanting to help. He helps the AI learn about love firsthand. But she begins to short circuit and disappear whenever her emotions become too out of the norm. This happens frequently enough that Protagman talks to her creator. The creator tells Protag that the system wasn’t made for extreme shifts in emotion. That Ame had fallen for him despite being an AI. Ame and Protag confess to one another and everything seems to be fine. But the short circuiting continues. Until irreparable damage has been done. The creator tells Protag that she has 10 days to live. Before the system permanently shuts down. And unlike the other routes, this doesn’t have a truly happy ending. The Protagman doesn’t suddenly find a solution. He spends her last 10 days with her and she “dies”. Protagman comes to terms with the loss of a loved one yet again. The twist here was that there wasn’t a twist. They done got me good. 8/10.

How Avoidable Are H Scenes: There is a All-Ages steam version and an uncensored MangaGamer version.

Let’s Dub Potential?: Fairly Low. It was pretty good. But I don’t think it would cross over well to the LDP fan base.

Enjoyment Level: 7.5/10 It’s pretty darn fun. Got through with it in maybe 5 days. For a fairly straight-forward romance VN it was pretty enjoyable.

Mystic Messenger Christmas DLC - 707’s missing VNs and CG Walkthrough

** Started around 08:30 for Christmas Eve. ** version 1.6.8a **

The idea I was working with this time, was to get onto any character’s route other than 707′s, while still maintaining a fair number of his hearts. Then after the 16:15 chat + VN, I would focus mostly on getting only 707′s hearts.

As a result, I ended up with only the 2 common VNs on Christmas Eve, but also got the 00:01 & 19:23 VNs + CG on Christmas Day.

NOTE I’m not 100% positive of what I did that lead me to get the VN and CG, so I’m going to list everything I did / answered with here.

Also want to note that I recently finished all the character’s good routes and secret endings before I attempted to get the CG and VN again. Not sure if that had any effect, but just going to mention it for now.

While I did get the VN and CG, only the CG seems to have been saved in my album, and the VNs aren’t appearing in my chat history. I’m hoping it’s just a glitch, but letting all those who read this know.
