You know that scene that changed everything we knew about Sans when we first played the game?

I'm not talking about the No Mercy route.

Of course it's the "date" at the MTT Resort!

I've seen a lot of fanart that depicted Sans saying that oh so familiar line while doing that famously creepy stare directly into your eyes.

Makes you feel intimidated, right?

Yeah. That's what it's supposed to do.

But I've played through Undertale and I noticed something a little different about how the fandom generally interprets that scene.

HE LOOKS AWAY.

I find this a little strange. Sans switches back and forth between looking at Frisk and looking away throughout this entire scene, but why he decided to look away while arguably giving one of his most chilling lines in the game...

I don't know, it just stands out. Because he COULD be staring at Frisk like in the fanart, but no.

I'm not saying this changes EVERYTHING about the scene, but it's certainly something to think about. It's still intimidating by all means.

It's just fascinating. Why would Sans look away?

Is he trying to be aloof? Did his "edgy" side come out for a split second? (I put edgy in speech marks because I still see him as a kind and compassionate jokester.)

Or maybe it's... shame?

It baffles me. It changes how I interpret this line. To me now it's just chilling, like he's speaking some dark truth, rather than a threat.

Because I can't really see this as a threat. But that's for another post.

What are your thoughts on this? Does this change anything about the scene for you or do you think of it the same as it was before?

Okay, take this with a grain of salt because this was me and three stopwatches, but I've timed how often I hear each vocalist in four different RMPG songs and in 3/4 of them, Hokuto comes in with the least time.

Tumblr Desktop is having a Freak Out and not working, so I can't upload the screenshots right now, but I did Swag & Pride, The Power, Silver Rain and Move the World.

Swag & Pride:

Kazuma: 1:17.0

Riku: 1:15.0

Hokuto: 0:46.2

The Power:

Kazuma: 1:18.8

Riku: 1:02.1

Hokuto: 0:55.9

Silver Rain:

Kazuma: 1:18.4

Riku: 0:55.7

Hokuto: 1:00.5

Move the World:

Kazuma: 1:05.4

Riku: 0:53.1

Hokuto: 0:43.3

So Kazuma comes out on top every time, then Riku is second most often in 3/4 songs and Hokuto is the least often in 3/4 songs.

Obviously there's extra notes, like for Move the World, I counted the echo-y "Move the World" towards Kazuma's total, since anytime it plays and you can see him, his mouth is moving. But this isn't a scientific paper, I'm not defending a thesis, so I won't go into that super much.

Ok, so ed is traumatized by threats of autocannibalism from his previous captain. [Aka boss] And when he is spiraling in self destruction, he does that exact thing to his close friend (+whipping boy?)

In his death images, the electrical activity happening as the body dies, his big radical shift in perspective is to place his behavior in the identity of his former abuser. And continue his own identity, "ed" in contrast, and at the whims of that person.

Now, the captain continues his life forward. Nourishes his body. Does what he has to do. And even, in this moment, treats him with respect! Dignity, even.

But underlying, there is a threat. Ed is afraid.

I think Ed has sought power to escape the abuses of hierarchy, and used those violences himself to get there. To build an image.

This made him lose himself, in a lot of ways. It's extreme masking trauma. It's made him feel so trapped that he has become suicidal, long before canon.

Ed realizes that to continue to be a pirate, he would rather himself be dead.

...or he can retire?

How very intriguing of Anne, to continue the tradition of sunlight as a vampires weakness/death, whilst making it the source of life for those who partake in the immortal tonic in The Mummy. Upon insinuating to Lestat that other immortal beings exist, Marius also urged the importance of not seeking them out. That they were best left alone.

I'm not finished with the Ramses series, but I do wonder if it's ever elaborated on just HOW Marius knows they should be left alone. But this could make for interesting Talamasca show fodder.

i know they underutilized the frankenstein aspect in the movie but it really does feel like the creature was perfectly created for lisa regardless. from what we saw, he spent his whole life lonely; dead parents, isolating social life, failed romantic prospects, the whole shebang, but he never gets to do anything about it because he dies, suddenly and unstoppably. until he’s suddenly alive again and the whole world is different but there’s this girl who tended to his grave when nobody else would have given him that respect, who’s experiencing the same things he did who actually has the chance to get back at the people who didn’t care for her, one tiny bit of familiarity to him… of course he’s going to kill for her just to see her happy.

Idea expanded, Rockstar Eddie falling head over heels for Bartender Steve working in a high class club type of joint. He sees him working one night and thinks God damn, he's hot. I'm taking him home tonight.

Except bartender Steve has developed a significant distaste for celebrities and rich people in general because of getting cut off from his homophobic parents for coming out and the general bad way many have treated him at work whilst sloshed. But lucky for Eddie, Steve doesn't recognize him. And even though he started off in a trailer park, the fame has gone to his head a little and he asks Steve out with the full intention of getting into his pants and never seeing him again.

But oh no, would you look at that Steve isn't easy. And what Eddie thought would be a booty call ends up being a ten hour date around the city where he has more fun than he even thought was possible. Just from talking with Steve about anything and everything, flitting to parks and museums. And Eddie doesn't even realize until he's back at his hotel that they didn't even kiss.

And they go out more and more, and Eddie likes him more and more and he finds out where the rich people hate comes from. And it scares him. So he keeps lying. Like an idiot. And he tells Steve a fake last name, he tells him a fake job (which is only half fake because he did used to be a tattoo artist) and he rents an air bnb that he pretends is his own place. And the lies keep getting more elaborate to cover up more lies. And he keeps refusing to meet Steve's friends out of fear that they'll recognize him. And he really just drove himself into a corner here because he is absolutely in love with Steve at this point but how the fuck can you have a normal relationship when you are pretending to be someone else?

Turns out you can't, and Steve finds out the truth despite his efforts. But the twist is, he thinks it's fucking hilarious. After a normal period of What the fuck reaction time he gets over it. But never let's Eddie live it down.

I don’t really know what to do with the information but I think it’s really interesting that in Dracula, the protagonists’ prejudices actively set them back and cause obstacles between them and their goals of stopping Dracula.

Like excluding Mina because she’s a woman and not trusting Renfield because of his mental state only make things worse for everyone.

I don’t have any properly analytical points about this it’s just interesting to think about…
