SUN WUKONG INSPIRED OC CONCEPT + design notes under cut

His mask is inspired by makeup used in Chinese theatre and art, specifically makeup used for SWK's character, though simplified a lot for animation/repetition sake.

The design on his back takes inspiration from cobras and other animals that use eye-like patterns as a defense mechanism. The mythical beasts he faces in my story are based on real life predators, which are often ambush predators! When his back isnt covered by cloth, the bright colors on his back and face make it look like he's got eyes in both directions, meaning he can't be ambushed. His back design can and will be simplified for animation/repetition purposes, or covered with clothes. But they're still an important feature... they mean a lot to me.

Was also inspired by his role of protector against foes and ambushes in the original novel, just gives me that "you can't catch me offguard" vibe when I look at eye-designs on animals irl. Cobras my beloved...

He's supposed to have a monolid but I don't think I drew that well (even with references).... I'm trying my best to practice with eyes and while I believe i'm doing good with eye shapes, I need to work on eyelid stuff. Yk?

Dramatic facial expressions are an absolute must during intense scenes! Make him look like he got eliminated on the bachelor during the second to last round, and now he's gotta watch as everyone gets to go to Jamaica (first class flight). Star/flower shaped tail for bonus silhouette sillies! I want him to look really unique compared to my Macaque (who's much more flat and has thinner, scruffier fur.)

His face is also more upturned and rounder than my Macaque's, who has a flatter nose-bridge and slightly more flatter/longer face. SWK's ears are also much more round and fluffy, and his brows are thick and actually exist! Remember: Macaque doesn't have noticeable eyebrows, he just has a noticeable eye-ridge.

"Where's his circlet?" I'm designing it + its easy to draw furry anthro characters naked for concept art. FYI.

DO NOT DRAW HIM WITH EYEBAGS. The eyebags on Macaque are a distinguishable feature and I don't want SWK to have smth similar! ^^'

I really wanted to make him brightly colored and much more lively/expressive compared to my Six Eared Macaque inspired OC! He's more dramatic, looks younger despite them both being the same age, and is more eye-catching than his counterpart. Hopefully I succeeded in that!

i do somewhat agree with the "brienne is sansa with a sword" quote i do think theyre pretty similar,theyre both quite idealistic and compassionate

I think brienne is more mature than sansa but yk shes an 18 year old woman and sansa is 11/12 so thats a given and sansa is honestly pretty mature post AGOT

I disagree with the sansa is female jaime tho

iirc someone actually reached out to GRRM over email in the last few years to verify that quote and he did reply… saying he couldn’t remember if he’d ever said that, but he could’ve done. So I think ultimately, if GRRM himself reckons he could have said it, it’s not too far off the mark.

That said, I’ve said before that I think the quote is used more to explain Brienne and those who would simplify her as a two-dimensional ‘warrior woman’ than it is to explain anything about Sansa. Courtesy of GOT, there’s a prevailing misunderstanding of Brienne as a character who abhors femininity and resents intimacy and whose relationship with knighthood is about as complex as that of a tin soldier. People obviously understand that Sansa is a dreamy young girl who enjoys femininity, so the quote is shorthand for saying that some of that is true of Brienne as well.

But I think even GRRM would agree that it does simplify things a bit: Sansa grew up being told she was perfect and beautiful, Brienne grew up being told much the opposite - which is why Sansa can have a proud and sometimes snooty aspect as a child, and Brienne as an adult has not a shred of self worth besides in her skill at arms. It’s almost impossible to say what each would be like if Brienne had grown up beautiful and Sansa had not, because their appearances have had (especially in Brienne’s case) such an outsized impact on the way they’ve been treated as human beings, and how they’ve come to see the world as a result. Still, I think both naturally hold romanticism close to their hearts, and that they definitely have in common, and I think would share regardless of what they looked like.

I get that that romanticism also has people pointing to similarities between Sansa and Jaime, but I think that really does over simplify lol. I think Jaime is probably more like Lyanna or Rohanne than Sansa, as in he has no particular regard for the rules and will break the ones that don’t make sense to him. Meanwhile, I think a key trait of Sansa is that she has a strong reverence for the rules + strives to be obedient and is very much a people pleaser who wants to charm. Jaime I think has a natural charisma, but won’t go out of his way to please anyone who doesn’t please him.

Meanwhile, I think Brienne is somewhere in between the two: she’d like to please most of the time, but has no problem talking right back to those who grate on her (Jaime and Hyle lol). She respects the rules but certainly becomes inclined to question them, and has always broken a few where she’s needed to - e.g. in picking up a sword in the first place, leaving Evenfall to join Renly’s train, the occasional trick in combat etc.

Either way I think all three are v much part of a fascinating conversation around knighthood, songs, rules and oaths, and will likely all be roughly on the same page by the story’s conclusion in terms of a mutual outlook.

plural anon from earlier figured id offer some info since you mentioned wanting to learn! obvious preface that im not an expert and this is just from my experience and what ive learned from others :) everyones experiences vary and im definitely not the be all end all lol

also this may get long, its a bit of an infodump! ^^;

i figured first id explain some of the stuff i said. i refer to myself as “plural” mostly, and said “plural system” as system is more often used from what ive seen, and plural offers more context to me. its honestly up to the person what they want to be referred to with. plural, plural system, plural person, just system, a collective, a group, there are probably more but those are the main ones i can think of!

also i should probably clarify, i said “pseudo-plurality” referring to the in-universe rab and vanny, as it isnt really confirmed whether that is an act put on by glitchtrap/will/mimic, or vanessa, or something, or if its actually a separate person. (i like to think of them as headmates/alters, but given that they are villains some folks dont want to which is also fair! it was very common to use the “evil alter” trope in horror so it can definitely put people on edge and rub them the wrong way. i like to explore and see this concept explored, but obviously with the headmates being actual people, not just boiled down to “ooo evil alter” for scare factor. i read a fic once where vanny was formed as a response to williams invasion and manipulation to protect vanessa, which is way more interesting to me than the evil alter trope!)

also, i should warn with the previous paragraph, if you do ever explore the idea of rab or vanny being opposition to gregory and vanessa, some people might get upset even if you are doing it well. unfortunately its the internet and theres a lot of bad rep out there and a lot of mean people. im sure you know the drill tho.

more general thing, some systems prefer to say headmates, some prefer alters, some prefer other words, some just refer to them as their friends or as the others. its dependent on the person! and the “main” person is called the host usually, or the core, typically the core ive seen used for systems who consider themselves to be “facets” of that core. my underdtanding of facets is that theyre more like branches off the host, rather than fully separate (ive seen some people use “admin” or other similar words too tho lol). the host is often said to be the “original” person, in the case of gregory and vanessa, those two would be the hosts, and rab and vanny would be alters/headmates/etc. but hosts dont HAVE to be the original person, it can change. i dont know the exacts of what makes a host a host, but from my understanding its basically a role someone has. and not every system uses roles or falls into them, for example id argue that the daycare attendant has “roles” in their system (moon takes care of naptime, sun takes care of playtime) but lacks an actual designated host, possibly because they dont really feel a need for one and just work(ed) as a unit.

on the topic of the daycare attendant, some plural folk will use a collective name or a “singletsona” (singlet just referring to a nonplural individual) of sorts. the daycare attendant has a collective name, which is, yk, “the daycare attendant” as it can refer to any/all of them. and rab sort of used gregory as a singletsona as opposed to telling his friends hes rab (sort of. he did use it as a pen name). in the same vein, there are also global pronouns, first person pronouns, and collective pronouns (these are the best ways i can simplify them lol).

global pronouns - for us anyways - are pronouns everybody can be referred to with. for us, our main global pronoun is it/its.

first person pronouns is just, how the person talks when referring to themself/themselves. i/me, us/we, and a mix of both. some systems only use plural first person pronouns when referring to the system/multiple folks in the system, some just always use we/us, some use i/me regardless, as usually it depends on the system and some stuff i havent even gone into. and for collective pronouns, its similar to the global pronoun thing, except its just the system as one entity’s pronouns. often it is the plural or singular they/them, we personally like plural and singular it/its for our system. its kinda like the bodys pronouns, which is why it can be singular to me. i hope thst made sense!

oh before i cut myself off i should probably mention switching. i dont switch out really so i cant provide much here but some systems experience amnesia/time loss/etc, some dont, but like i said i cant give you much because i dont switch out. im sure someone else can help with that ^^;

politely asking that you drop a rant on how mischaracterized eddie is ♡ I love reading your opinions on stranger things it's like opening a really well written magazine (also i see so much . eddie bs on the daily I would like one (1) person to just be normal about him . please)

my biggest gripe is that ppl do not acknowledge that eddie’s confidence is performative and he isn’t naturally just 🔥⚔️a cool guy⚔️🔥 yk? like we have all seen the character that eddie presents himself as in 4.01 a billion fucking times. zany misfit who doesn’t like sports and parties and clearly views himself as being better than other people because of it (we’ve even seen it in stranger things already). eddie appears to be another carbon copy presentation of those traits untillll the supernatural factors in and he almost instantly loses all his gusto, all his confidence, and has to rely on the kids who he refers to as sheep and a former partyboy jock and honor roll student nancy wheeler. and aside from holding the bottle to steve’s throat, which i think was just an instinctual fight or flight response to someone finding him while he’s a wanted man, eddie never pops off on them or tries to whip out his cafeteria schtick ever again. 4.01 eddie is long gone. and this is because 4.01 eddie wasn’t his true self!! it wasn’t his actual personality!! it’s a show, an act of being like “no one in this high school can hurt me because i don’t care what any of you think aaaa look how crazy i am!!!” when in reality eddie goes about his day clearly….afraid! his first scene is literally him giving an impassioned rant to his trusted group of friends about how people don’t understand people like himself and he’s obviously genuinely frustrated by this. when he realizes everyone in hawkins is after him, he understands immediately that it’s an act of hunting the freak, and he’s visibly relieved when he realizes the group doesn’t suspect him like he assumed they would. idk i see so much fanon interpretation of eddie as this badass who doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks and goes about his day laughing in the faces of anyone who looks at him wrong and like, yeah on the surface maybe he appears that way but that isn’t who he is. not at his core. at his core he does care very deeply and he fears the assumptions others have about him and that makes him an interesting character and it’s sooooooo frustrating to see people just be like hmm whatever let’s over simplify his ass

honestly i wld say heavily look at references — draw over a reference, find the shapes, and try to replicate your draw over, it’ll really help understanding anatomy and being able to draw without reference or taking from multiple references!

understanding colors and shape language is also really helpful as well as learning to simplify certain things like yes learning details of the face, hands, and anatomical structure is important, but focusing on all those details can really trip you up when it comes to the bigger picture yk? my advice wld be to practice those overtime, learn how to draw faces, hands, and all that so you can simplify it correctly, but still just practice drawing your bigger pieces too!

figure drawing and quick sketches are super super helpful — doing like 30 sec figure sketches can really help you find things like line of action and what’s the most important thing to get down while also having correct anatomy.

along those lines, i wldnt focus on style too much. it comes naturally! it’s basically just artists little quirks or aesthetic choices like for example i like to draw either very small far-set or large close-set eyes in my ocs with a lot of highlights and i had to understand how to make that look anatomically correct while also keeping my style in there, so sorry for the ramble but art is a lot to think about LOL

what is the simple explanation of the au?

Well, this is as simple as I can make it… 😭, so it hope it helps:

When the monsters and humans fought, the humans won, and before they trapped them underground they placed a curse on them - this curse causes the monsters health to deteriorate. Some will fall down, some get sick, some just have less health then others. The ones that aren’t sick can very easily catch it. The sickness has 4 stages, and the first acting like a cold - last being an extremely deadly disease. This is extremely dangerous for monsters, so many had to step up and be the ones to help and heal to avoid total extinction. After a few years, the first human fell down, this human is Chara. Chara is a very sickly kid, and they got a deadly disease before falling into the underground. Asriel found them and took them home so they could heal up, the Dreemurr family quickly realized that this child is extremely ill, and did their best to research the illness and try to stop it (Monsters have more knowledge on humans because of how many tests they did on Chara to stop them from dying). Eventually Chara did die, and a year later, so did Asriel. Asriel got the sickness, and got it bad - stage four. Asriel’s dust (just like in undertale) was placed upon garden flowers where he laid in his last moments. (Would go into more detail but this would go on into a rant, basically Flowey is a withered flower) (Another fact: Flowers are grown to give to the sick, as a “get well soon” kinda thing). This has caused Asgore extreme grief, and hates the surface humans for the curse they have placed upon monsters, and the lives it takes. Like in Undertale, this causes an argument between Toriel and Asgore - and etc etc, you know how it goes.

That’s the simplified backstory (even if it doesn’t look like it 😭), the main story kinda follows in the same footsteps as Undertale (except genocide route, but might get into that in another post). Frisk is a hypochondriac, so interacting with sick monsters all the time is a bit stressful. Frisk made sure to grab the protective wear they provide underground. Toriel is a healer and takes care of everyone in the ruins, which is very stressful for her. The monsters aren’t entirely focused on killing humans or taking their soul (especially if they’re sick), they’re too busy trying to make sure everyone’s ok. Getting through the barrier is their second priority for the causal doctors and patients (although the professional docs know a little more than others, and know if they get through the barrier their curse will be lifted, so they do definitely focus on getting souls as much as making sure the sick survive.) Im still working on this so I don’t have everything set and stone yet, I made the askblog so I can come up with figure out things and answer more easily! Again i’ve only had this for like, a week, so yk … Some parts of the story is still being made (like how I want neutral and pacifist to look like). But yeah, I hope this helped at least a little bit!! Sorry it’s so much text, and i’ll check back up on this later to see if I made any mistakes!!!

using irl pics as reference - i literally go on pinterest n combine several photos 2 get the pose i want, [or when it comes to hands i take pics of my own lol] i usually browse through magazine photoshoots or pics of statues n find stuff with cool poses .... this also applies to other stuff rlly like for clothing folds i would pick out parts that would look and feel right and interpret it in my own wayyy

find an artist with a Banger sense of anatomy n use their stuff as reference - bonus points if ur artgods have a semi realistic style n ur already obsessed with their stuff like Seriously the other half of my ref photos are other ppl's art and i would copy the way they draw certain things - i also actively observe How they draw these certain things like "oh this is actually in a triangle shape" or "oh theres a bump here and its followed by a straightish line" and i am mindful of these, i make sure to remember them even just the tiniest change bc that's still an improvement yk a different way of thinking abt something - love these accs for anatomy [tomfoxdraws, taco1704, kato_anatomy], this artist is great at simplifying their ref but still keeping it dynamic and flowy [UTWP_], and this acc for more general tips but with timelapses so u can see how they go about drawing something [KawaiiSensei_jp] <- theres also some anatomy stuff there toooo also SORRY literally 4/5 of these accs are in japanese or korean i just look at stuff n think about it no need to read :sob:

study up on proportions n figure out ways 2 simplify stuff using basic shapes - thanking my 12 year old self for being so nitpicky abt proportions like, i used to "measure" the length of the limbs and from doing that i learned how a bunch of stuff works like halfway point of the torso is also where elbows are, hands end midthigh, thigh usually as long as torso etcetc and since i got so used to "measuring" these it's just muscle memory for me atp, its all about the observations ur honor - for simplifying stuff its like, breaking something down to its basic shapes like how the hand can be a square or a triangle with a bunch of circles or cylinders attached to it, how the torso can be a rectangle circle or triangle depending on the body type etcetc - once again its actively observing and keeping what u learned in mind and doing it over and over again until it Sticks and u can change stuff n improve on it as u learn more about it

3d models / posing apps - literally only just started using these. a month or two ago ??? but i find these Very useful for when i have Such a specific pose in mind or when im too lazy to find or take ref pics WOOPS i also use irl ref pics when posing my 3d model btw im not That lazy KJSDFSDF

Her last heroic act, bringing back the leader we met and loved earlier in the books, her children helping her along with Fireheart, the apologies, the forgiveness, I love it.

Plus, the fact that the prophecy said Fire will Save our Clan (only knowing fire as a destructive force), and she goes against Starclan and Fireheart himself, only to meet her end to water (a life giving, but equally destructive force)? *chef's kiss*

It felt like we closed the book on her life.

Personally, I think that would be Tigerstar. Once you get over the shock of his death, it's not...great narritavely. His death is shock value, that's it. They wanted Scourge to be the bigger bad, but had no form of set up for his character and figured the best way for him to be the bigger bad is to kill the current biggest bad.

Bloodclan are formally introduced and Tigerstar dies in the same chapter. I'm not saying Firestar had to kill him. But I am saying Scourge had no business doing so. We as the readers know Tigerstar, we know his actions, what he stands for, his opinions, his plans, whatever. The story builds investment in his character. We don't know Scourge. He's evil, yeah, but what else?

I mean the scene is badass and very worthy of its popularity. But I don't think it fits yk?

See Tigerstar has two clans on his side and as does Firestar. Aside from Eclipse, we never see the four clans fight against each other like this. They're all on equal standing, all leaders of their clans with nine lives, assumed to have the blessing of Starclan, yeah?

But Tigerstar dies. Then Bloodclan comes, outsiders come, and become a bigger threat. Then instead of the clans split in half by different ideologies from the same code, it becomes a simplified us (Starclan-following, noble warriors) vs them (Starclan-less, vicious rogues) fight.

Though you could make it so that affects the later books had Bloodclan been written better and Po3 been written differently. Due to Bloodclan, the story never truly confronts the cats on Tigerstar's side. They helped Lionclan because they wanted to keep their territory, but it can only be assumed they hold the same views they did three days ago. This could've all come to head in the Po3.

Or just have more build up to Bloodclan in general.

But I digress.

I'm gonna share my switched au with you 😤 namely the first half of it !!! (since ik Nyx has written a little bit of the second half so I'm gonna keep the details of that more of a secret hehe)

The premise of the switched au is more or less swapping the plots/ideas of the two seasons! So the odyssey dads get a teen coming of age adventure and the kiddads have to go on a rescue mission through Faerun to save their kids (the s2 teens but a little bit younger)!!

I came up with this AU a long time ago and obviously didn't know how season 2 would play out so the odyssey dads adventure goes a LOT more off the script and I think its a lot of fun tehehe

It starts off with Darryl, Glenn, Ron, and Mercedes (shes a main character here 😤) being put together for a group project on a field trip, and accidentally getting sucked through a portal to Faerun! Simultaneously, Hen has decided to run away from Oakvale and has JUST managed to sneak outside of the borders when BAM a bunch of inter dimensional teens show up.

They don't exactly get off on the best foot at first, I actually drew Hen and Mercedes first meeting here bc its SO FUN LOL but eventually Hen agrees to help them find a way back home (leaving out the fact that it's because he's on the run from HIS home.)

I came up with teenage Hen's personality before I got a taste of it in the liveshow but I was ON CLOUD NINE when we found out his canon personality specifically because of this au LMAO EMO TEEN HEN IS CANON NOW BABEYYYY

He's also like, freshly cracked egg in the sense that he's just realized he's trans so it's very fun thinking about how Mercedes (who's already socially transitioned) helps him out :3c In general hencedes is so damn cute in this AU !!!!! She's the first one to crack his moody broody persona by making him laugh himself silly over a dumb pun she made.

Also find Hen and Glenn's dynamic to be fucking hilarious. Bros will be bros who kick absolute ass and smoke weed together and maybe kiss sometimes. Yk all things you do with the homies 😎

There's just SO DAMN MUCH within this AU even with it being split into two parts I feel like I can't get into it all without this post being a mile long LMAO but all the other (future) spouses are involved even Terry Sr., the main villain is Bear'ry BUT Willy IS ALSO THERE. Because he died when Ron was in middle school and he's in highschool in this ! So while he's not AS powerful as in canon he's still definitely a problem they have to deal with.

The part I enjoy the most in this half of the au though is DEFINITELY the group dynamics. It's delightful 🥺 I know I've mostly talked about Henry's relationships but that's cause I'm biased LMAO there's a lot of other stuff going on like Ron bonding with Samantha and Terry over the phone in another dimension and Morgan forming a club to search for the missing teens because she's realized no one is giving a fuck about Ron and Glenn, there's the whole thing with Darryl and Carol being soo early in their relationship and having this massive distance put between them, not even mentioning TEENAGE JODIE.... THERE'S SO MUCH.

But if I were to simplify it down to the main five group dynamic, it's Ron saying he's kinda hungry and Darryl goes to grab some of their rations, Glenn is holding a piece of bread and Hen is using his flaming sword to toast it while Mercedes is making a special jam recipe with some random magic forest berries and Darryl comes back to this all and goes OH MY FUCKING GOD WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING ???!?!????

One thing that has always annoyed me about the fandom is this whole.. standby lesbians thing with rosemary. This has been said so many times before but I'm saying it again cause it's STILL annoying and people still do it so like. . Often they're just sort of. Being there. In the background of other(mostly MLM) ships, serving as this prop. Like when people draw davekat/dirkjake/pepsicola/etc they're always doing something like talking or cuddling or shopping or it's like a shitpost about divorce or something or whatever. But very often when i see rosemary it's like. They're just eerily standing next to one another and smiling. Like almost the entire fandom agrees that it's a good ship, but literally no one actually wishes to understand their personalities or their bond beyond that. It's just. Prim and proper lesbian rep to fill in the gaps. Much of their tags on social media are filled with this very bland fanon version of them, and very often it's accompanied by a different, more characterized ship as the main focus of the post. They're just kinda there to sit still and look pretty. Like I've seen people crackship yaoi just for the sake of yaoi and call it the ship of the century but the same group would tell you that rosemary is boring because uhhhhh smart words and uhh girl read book. The ao3 tag is also atrocious. I need to break my neck to find good content for one of the only canon pairings in HS 💀

sadly this doesn’t just happen in homestuck, this happens in almost every fandom. and then ppl ask why sapphic creators are so LOUD???. someone has to provide the actually accurate awesome stuff… it’s so funny because whenever i read a wlw fic with an mlm side pairing they still do them justice… i feel like a wlw fic author will drop the best interpretations of mlm couples and then an mlm fic writer will just like make the background wlw characters sit there and do nothing most of the time.

but that might just be me tbh idk i don’t keep track of every thing i read. i dont really understand why every single fandom has this weird imbedded mysogeny its like i can’t find any content of ships i like without them being either objectified or simplified yk. i also have beef with the fact that there is NOT!! ENOUGH!! well written PLATONIC dynamics ever like that’s the most fun thing to me like i actually need dave and kanaya duo content desperately.

i feel like a lot of authors lack the crucial understanding that everyone is always going through something. when characters aren’t in a certain scene they’re still doing something in the story. like where is the background tea. where is the nasty deets. things dont always happen in a linear clear perfect way like i think while dave is figuring out what touches are in which quadrants we should have rose and kanaya start gaslighting karkat into believing he is made of earth crab. let rose fake her own death with kanaya and have terezi conduct a case while davekat suck face yk. we’re all a little silly
