#tina is a hurricane on stage

Note
My uncle once saw Tina Turner at I believe he said the Empire theatre (soz can’t remember) when she opened up for the Rolling Stones back in 1966. He said he originally went to see the Yardbirds and the Stones, he didn’t really know anything about tina only that she had a song out in England at the time called ‘River deep mountain high’ but thats all. but when she finally came out and performed with the ikettes, she blew everyone away. She completely upstaged all the acts that night and caused mayhem, so much so that when it finally came time for the stones to do their bit they were booed by the audience to where Mick Jagger had to go back to get Tina to calm the crowd down.
Oop! 💅🏿 I bet he did! 🤣🤣🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s the QUEEN, bitch! Them British folks were NOT ready!!! I know Mick didn’t dance much before then. Tina even said he would just go on stage with a tambourine and beat it. I guess that’s the tour where he first saw Tina and the Ikettes who forced him to step his shit up! 🤣  You can’t outperform or outshine Tina Turner. Like, it’s just not happening. Not only is she a hurricane on stage, Tina will upstage your ass on your own tour, in your own hometown and scalp the entire audience at the same time. No one moves like her. No one sings like her, no one has her energy or charisma - she’s that girl! 👸🏾

This whole Mob AU has it's hooks in me ya'll so here you go.
Criminal King Steve courting his Queen.
- It happens like this. Steve has always been spoiled. Has the whole "I want it, I got it" mentality. And that's applied to lovers to. He lost his virginity at the age of fifteen to Amanda Grady behind the hardware store. But Anthony Mueller was his first kiss at eleven years old. You see the WHOLE TOWN knows not too fuck with Steve Harrington. It's not that he'll kick your ass, cuz he won't. Has never laid a hand on another soul. But Kings usually don't. They have grunts for that. And since the age of seven Tommy has been laying kids out for King Steve AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT. Cuz of course Mr. Harrington appreciated someone taking care of Steve. Meant he didn't have to. So Tommy never gets detention EVER. And while he doesn't go parading his boyfriends around (he's not stupid), no one ever gives him shit for it when he has a "friend" sleep over on a Wednesday night at the age of seventeen and comes to school covered in hickies the following Thursday morning.
- So when Billy beats Steve's keg stand record at Tina's Halloween party and comes vaulting his drunk ass over that damn couch to stare Steve down, Steve is fucking living. This boy is a hurricane trapped inside the most gorgeous body he's ever scene and he wants. And King Steve always gets what he wants. Gives a lazy smile and gets up really close to Billy. "I'm impressed Heartbreaker. Must not have much of a gag reflex huh?"
- And Billy is not ready for this sober let alone post keg stand. Cuz his dad moved them cross country to scare the "queer" out of him and this boy is so so pretty. He should take a step back. Regroup. Push him away. But he doesn't.
- King Steve takes him back to his lonely castle and ruins him. Spreads him out on silk sheets in a four poster bed like he's something precious. Something adored. Something worth the trouble and the time. Goes home in the morning sore enough that he's walkin a little funny but in all the best ways.
- After that though? Billy notices things get a little strange. Because when he first got here all the girls lined up just to stare as he got out of his car. Now? Now they wave at him. Like they've been friends for years. And what the hell? He's blatantly late for class and doesn't get a tardy slip. At lunch after all of the chocolate muffins are gone the lunch lady somehow procures one with frosting on it for Billy free of charge. It has him on edge. He knows good things are never free and it seems he's running quite the tab. Makes him antsy, waiting for the catch. But when Steve waves him over to eat lunch with his advisors and generals he relaxes a little. Cuz maybe that's just what it means to have friends in high places.
- Not only that but his dad isn't even suspicious. Has absolutely nothing to say about the new boy he's been hanging with. Doesn't even know he exists which. Weird. Because his dad has always been the type to ask around about his son. Makes sure Billy and his sick twisted desires don't come back to embarrass Neil. But he's not gunna look a gift horse in the mouth.
- And Steve keeps giving him things. The new Metallica album a week before it's out (how in the fuck...?), a black leather jacket that's buttery soft to the touch, even gives him a new earing. A dangling cross with a diamond in the center. And Billy knows he looks good okay? Is confident in his skills in bed. So initially he's sure that's why Steve treats him like this. Cuz they've fallen into bed together almost every other day since Tina's party and it's good. Fucking fantastic sex alright? Billy's never had anyone as good as Steve Harrington. So if the king wants to throw pretty baubles at him then so be it. It's not like it's a struggle or anything.
-But then Billy gets sick. Like he's not dying (he would very much argue this) but it's a bad flu bug. High fever, aches and pains the whole bit. Billy doesn't get out of bed for two days. It's so bad even his dad lays off to an extent. So when the doorbell rings Max has to get it even though technically Billy is babysitting while Susan and Neil are out for date night. And there stands Steve Harrington with an easy smile and a plastic bag full of cold medicine and homemade soup.
- And Max is low key freaking the FUCK out because her friends at school told her all about king Steve. Mike's sister is his best friend so he actually sees the kids quite often. And while Mike isn't his biggest fan he still concedes he's a pretty nice guy whenever it comes to them. Brings them the GOOD sugary snacks and a pizza whenever he stops by during their DnD campaigns. But she also knows he's probably the most powerful person in town. Has got Will's older brother on his payroll. Has somehow heard about Billy being sick when she hasn't told anyone. So she's wary when he asks to come in and see Billy. Cuz even if he's an asshole he's her brother and if this guy is here to fuck with him then she's gunna stage a coupe.
- But Steve just smiles big and sheepish. Tells her he was worried when Billy didn't show up to school. Wanted to know if he was okay. Made soup and everything. So she lets him in and directs him to the door down the hall on the left where Billy is working through a fever of 101.2. Tells him she loves her brother very much. That she'll be in the next room over. Then turns around and runs to her room, her red hair a battle flag in the wind. Steve likes her instantly.
- Billy was super out of it the whole time but he's pretty sure Steve Harrington stopped by and fed him soup. Gave him expensive cold medicine that knocked him the fuck out and read to him when he wavered in and out of consciousness. And that.. That's dangerous. Because Billy knows that's not something you do for just anyone no matter how good of a fuck they are. That's something you do for someone you have feelings for. And Billy can't have that. That's not how his life works. He doesn't get to keep someone like Steve. But when Billy goes back to school Steve is there waiting by his locker with a smile and a coffee made just the way Billy likes it. Feels his heart flutter like the traitorous little mother fucker it is. And falls in love with Steve Harrington right there five minutes before English on a Monday morning.

myle <3 do you have any glee headcanons for halsey songs?
Why yes I do, thank you for asking!!!
I tired to be fair and give all of the characters their time to shine.
my answer is already very long, so I didn't do her last album, if anyone has any headcanons, I'd love to hear them!!
So I made a playlist with all of the songs I mentioned.
Is there somewhere: kurtbastian, a duet, the lyrics are very them, especially this verse.
I'm sorry, but I fell in love tonight. /I didn't mean to fall in love tonight.
You're looking like you fell in love tonight. / Could we pretend that we're in love?
empty gold: brittana maybe in S2?
Feel like we've been falling down / Like these autumn leaves
But baby, don't let winter come / Don't let our hearts freeze
hurricane: I feel like Quinn would sing this, she would relate to the chorus especially.
I'm a wanderess, I'm a one night stand / Don't belong to no city, don't belong to no man
I'm the violence in the pouring rain / I'm a hurricane
colors: I feel like it's a Tina song, during props when she stands up for herself and Mike is being a jerk? also c'mon that bit is iconic.
You were red and you liked me 'cause I was blue
But you touched me and suddenly I was a lilac sky
And you decided purple just wasn't for you
hold me down: a S5 girls number, lead by Marley and Unique, I feel like the anger is very fitting.
drive: a S2 girls number, lead by Santana, it's the vibes.
All we do is think about the feelings that we hide
All we do is sit in silence waiting for a sign
Sick and full of pride / All we do is drive
roman holiday: faberry, there's longing and conflict. (the lyrics)
Oh, we'll be looking for sunlight, or the headlights / 'Til our wide eyes burn blind
We'll be lacing the same shoes that we've worn through / To the bottom of the line
And we know that we're headstrong / And our heart's gone
And the timing's never right / but for now let's get away / On a Roman holiday
strange love and haunting: warning there will be a lot of kurtbastian, but tell me it's not them and this
They think I'm insane, they think my lover is strange /But I don't have to fucking tell them anything, anything
And I'm gonna write it all down, and I'm gonna sing it on stage / But I don't have to fucking tell you anything
-
I was as pure as a river /But now I think I'm possessed
You put a fever inside me / And I've been cold since you left
I've got a boyfriend now and he's made of gold / And you've got your own mistakes in a bed at home
I'm hoping you could save me now, but you break and fold / You've got a fire inside, but your heart's so cold
gasoline: new directions, the theme about being 'weird', Artie and Santana with the lead.
I walk the line: jarley, a duet, acoustic though.
I find it very, very easy to be true / I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you / Because you're mine, I walk the line
I'm not mad: Rachel, she's annoyed at her ex boyfriends so they make her go though a swag punk phase that lasts two episodes.
clementine: Santina duet, S4, both of them are longing in a melancholic way. (the lyrics are so beautiful)
graveyard, klaine duet after their breakup for good, one last angsty duet for old times sake.
bad at love, one tree hill, each one of them can get a verse.
forever... (is a long time), Santana to Brittany in S6.
I spent a long time watering a plant made out of plastic / And I cursed the ground for growing green
I spent a long time substituting honest with sarcastic / And I cursed my tongue for being mean
I HATE EVERYBODY, Sebastian and the Warblers, read the lyrics and you'll get what I mean.
So I'll just hate everybody / Well, then why can't I go home without somebody?
And really, I could fall in love with anybody who don't want me / So I just keep sayin' I hate everybody
But maybe I, maybe I don't
3am, another angsty song, I'll give this one to Blaine.
My self-preservation and all of my reservations
Are sittin' and contemplating what to do with me, do with me
Think I took it way too far / And I'm stumblin' drunk, getting in a car
My insecurities are hurtin' me / Someone please come and flirt with me
I really need a mirror that'll come along and tell me that I'm fine
Strangers, I've said before, but pezberry, no question.
without me: a Marley and Quinn duet, New York State of Mind type.
sorry, Kurt solo to Adam, it's a heartbreaking ballad.
So I'm sorry to my unknown lover / Sorry that I can't believe
That anybody ever really /Starts to fall in love with me
Sorry to my unknown lover / Sorry I could be so blind
Didn't mean to leave you / And all of the things that we had behind
Be Kind, group number, it's very new directions energy.
Finally // beautiful stranger: Kurt, I'm going for kelliott, but also it fits kadam, it's theme of meeting someone after going through so many heartbreaks allowing yourself to fall in love.
Beautiful stranger, here you are in my arms and I know
That beautiful strangers only come along to do me wrong
And I hope, beautiful stranger, here you are in my arms
But I think it's finally, finally, finally, finally, finally safe For me to fall
alone: girls group number again, they would nail it.
Alanis' Interlude, britina duet, bi icons.
Cause your pussy is a wonderland / And I could be a better man / It doesn't matter to me
'Cause he is she is her / And her and he are love
And I have never felt the difference / Tired of all these labels
Still Learning, fapezberry duet, it would be very gay.
wipe your tears, quinntana, it's a wlw song and very them.
Keep your friends close, but this pretty girl closer / Kiss her on the neck, little baby is a poser
Thinks she's so cold, but the world is colder / Take her in my lap and I'll promise that I'll hold her
My bed is too big for only me / I keep a pistol when I sleep
Inside my mouth so I can shoot / Down all the bad things
Now or Never: I realized I still haven't Mercedes a song, and I just think she would kill this one.

Undo my ESC '21 (semi-final two)
Good afternoon folks, and welcome to the second part of Undo my ESC – my annual quest to make the year’s Eurovision better (at least, for me xD) by making a feasible change in each country – it could be something as small as altering a lyric or a staging detail, or as big as a different artist entirely winning the NF. Semi-final one was here so let's jump straight into SF2!
🇸🇲 San Marino: We're thrown into the deep end here with a fan fav that doesn't do at all for me. I'm one of maybe 5 people on the planet who prefers Freaky by far, I guess? I'm happy for Senhit to be getting so much love and for the diminutive serene republic to finally have a shot at a good result - but I'm not so keen on the way it's been done. There's a bit of cognitive dissonance for me because my favourite thing about Adrenalina is Flo Rida's rap, but I don't like the idea of bringing in famed American artists like "ringers" to elevate a song above one with "only" local talent. I would be so tempted to give the rap part to local artist IROL instead to spit some hot bars in Italian.
🇪🇪 Estonia: I had hope this year, I really did, for my era of absolutely adoring Estonia at ESC to be revived after 4 painful years. There were so many good songs at this year's Eesti Laul, like those of Ivo Linna, Egert, Gram of fun, Heleza - but ultimately, my huge favourite was, as expected, Jüri Pootsmann. Anyone who followed this blog back in 2016 knows how much I adore Jüri and was desperate to see him get a redemption arc at ESC itself. Magus melanhoolia was one of the best songs of the season for me and one of the best stagings. As much as I prefer '20 artists to get their shot in '21, problematic Uku with his toxic ex vibes song will have to step aside and let the Jüri renaissance happen here.
🇨🇿 Czechia: I really dig Benny Cristo - he has personality, presence and his own enjoyable style. At first I was kinda disappointed with Omaga because I was expecting something more in the vein of Kemama, with more pronounced Afrobeat influences. But it has grown on me a lot too. My change? Add more Czech than just one blink-and-you-miss-it line, mate! (Article continues below)
🇬🇷 Greece: I see this being talked up as potential televote top 3 and I just don't get it. Maybe it's the way the chorus rhymes dance with itself three times (and uses the term rockin' romance unironically); maybe it's the way that there are better 80s-inspired songs both in ESC and many fallen tributes in the NF season... it just leaves me cold. I actually preferred Supergirl and my change would be for Stefania to bring something with some actual Greek flair.
🇦🇹 Austria: I’ll echo what I said last year about Österreich – how did they go from Conchita to a guy who wished he wouldn’t have gay kids like this? I find both of this guy's songs insipid in different ways and I would invite Pænda back instead to avenge her getting robbed with the beautiful Limits. Or give a second shot at glory to the incredible Cesár!
🇵🇱 Poland: Unpopular opinion, but I absolutely love The Ride, and I feel bad for Alicja, but I much prefer it to Empires. What started as an ironic fondness for Rafał's cringy uncle vibes ended up being genuine appreciation - it's one of the few 80s-inspired songs that sound like they actually could have come out of that decade rather than like modern pastiches. And Raf actually does have an awkward charisma. My change - insert some Polish! Poland does so well with natural sounding bilingual efforts in JESC, they should bring it to the main contest too!
🇲🇩 Moldova: I was lowkey prepared to be disappointed by Moldova - I actually enjoyed Prison a lot and the news that they were going in a completely different direction didn't sit so well with me. And yet, I also love Sugar. Natalia's power! My changes: get rid of that weird scene with literally egg on her face - too on the nose for me. And incorporate a bit of the stellar Russian translation, Tuz bubi, because I'm always going to be advocating for more linguistic diversity xD
🇮🇸 Iceland: Daði Freyr can literally do no wrong with me. Whilst it doesn't have the same intense extra-fandom hype that Think about things did, I think I like Ten years even more. Nothing to change here.
🇷🇸 Serbia: It's no secret that Hurricane were far from my favourites at Beovizija 20, and that I find this a downgrade for Sanja compared to her powerful '16 song. And yet... Hasta la vista grew on me a lot, and so has Loco loco. It's something that is definitely scratching an itch at this year's ESC and the burst of anarchic energy it'll provide will be amazing. I am seriously tempted to change to the acoustic version, though, which has all the attitude of the original but is more beautiful for me and lets the girls' voices shine more.
🇬🇪 Georgia: Georgia keeps serving acquired tastes, and as a patron saint of marginal genres and I love them for that. This year, they've gone for something that even many fans of Tornike find hard to swallow - gone is the roaring rock of last year, replaced with a much more contemplative, soft effort that reminds me a little of Lou Reed. I enjoy both songs, but I can't deny preferring 2020. At the same time, I admire the chutzpah required to send something so different. I just wish there could be a moment to properly showcase T's powerhouse vocals.
🇦🇱 Albania: It was an odd Festival i këngës this year, outdoors in the freezing cold and without the orchestra that makes the songs soar so much more for me. Karma is a perfectly respectable winner, albeit one that lacks the immediacy and rawness of Shaj, Ktheju tokës and Mall. In my ideal alternate reälity, Arilena Ara would have been invited back. She'd bring a song as beautiful as Shaj - and not do a revamp into English that removes its edge this time.
🇵🇹 Portugal: 2015-2020 was a full on Portugal stan era for me. I want to believe that this year is an aberration and that in 2022, our lusitanian neighbours will produce the goods once again. Because ending a colossal streak of not sending songs that don't include Portuguese for this? I am baffled. I wanted the anthemic Joana do mar, produced beautifully by Luísa Sobral, or the timeless Contramão, which sounds like it escaped a Nouvelle Vague soundtrack. Saudade, Por um triz or a number of others would have been grand too.
🇧🇬 Bulgaria: I wasn't expecting much from Bulgaria - I really didn't and don't like TGS and the majority of songs in Victoria's NF-but-not-really aren't my cup of tea. I was happy she got her second chance, but resigned to not liking the song much that would get picked. And then, my fav, which was last in many community ratings, ended up being her pick. I adore GUIGO and believe it has the possibility to do very, very well at Rotterdam and be one of the 'moments' of the evening.
🇫🇮 Finland: CRIMINAL how YLE treated Aksel - it felt like he wasn't the defending champion, and that Erika Vikman had won the previous year. They also - I believe, deliberately - split his vote by making his just one of a number of ballads, so of course what stood out most were the two decidedly non-ballady songs. Finland only two years ago had a single-artist UMK. They could and should have brought it back for Aksel. I'd hope Hurt would win it, because that song is stunning.
🇱🇻 Latvia: I was, and am, delighted that Latvia stuck with Samanta Tina. The lady lives and breathes ESC, even wrote a university thesis about it, and if she tried so many times, finally won and then DIDN'T get to go to ESC, I would have gone to LTV headquarters personally to remonstrate. I really like both her songs. The moon is rising is poised, powerful and like nothing else this year. The only thing I'd change is adding some Latvian because it's a gorgeous language and we've been waiting for ages to hear it again.
🇨🇭 Switzerland: Gjon's song is once again not really my cup of tea, or tears - but I enjoy it better than last year's and I'm glad he's back. Highkey wish it did include Albanian or Romansch like confused commenters last year thought it did.
🇩🇰 Denmark: There is literally no excuse for Denmark's treatment of Ben & Tan. I'm not even a big fan of their music at all, out to not even allow them to compete in DMGP to defend their win with Iron heart? Even though there are songs that competed in DMGP that I prefer a lot, most notably Står lige her, I would probably have let them have a proper second chance.
And the automatic qualifiers voting in this semi -
🇫🇷 France: For me, France had an absolutely enthralling, sincere, perfectly Gallic entry that hit me so hard in the feels. And whilst I respect Voilà, no, that wasn't it. It was Pourvu qu'on m'aime, easily one of the best songs I heard all year inside NFs or out. I find Voilà a little too mannered and affected, whilst PQM is a shot straight from Juliette's heart into mine. In my dream, it'd have won CVQD and be receiving the same love that Voilà is right now.
🇪🇸 Spain: Whilst it is getting next to no love in the fandom and seems quite forgotten, I find Voy a quedarme one of the best songs sent from this country in several years - and I say that having preferred Memoria. I am proud of Blas and love that he had a hand in writing this song. My change? He said recently that the staging in Rotterdam won't be inspired by the poignant music video despite wanting it to be - I would incorporate elements from it in the live.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Frankly, I think almost all the Big 5+1 brought it this year, with the notable exception of Germany. Embers is the banger that I never thought was coming from James Newman, and it's been one of the biggest earworms of the season. I wouldn't change anything about it - I'd just ensure that the staging replicated the energy of the video as much as possible!

Just like I did for the first semi final, here's a more in-depth "review" of my favourites from yesterday that no one asked for
My 1 point goes to Finland
The song is fun. The whole vibe I've getting is a bit... Juvenile... If I'm being honest but I don't mind if that much.
My 2 points go to Latvia
Okay so Samanta's performance yesterday wasn't it but the song is still interesting nevertheless.
My 3 points go to Albania
I love her stage presence. Also Albania retains the trend of sending women with really amazing vocals so I can't help but stan.
My 4 points go to Denmark
Okay, I liked this song but I don't understand the outrage over it not qualifying? Like, it's good but no it wasn't robbed or anything. The only unfair disqualification this year was Croatia's and that's that.
My 5 points go to Iceland
I love how Iceland is consistently weird but in a charming way. I'm glad this is in the finals but odds predict it might be in the top 5 and I'm like... Yeah no.
My 6 points go to the Czech Republic
I love Benny's energy both on and off stage and he's really pretty but his performance was not that good unfortunately. Even though I voted for him I can see why he didn't make it. Still sad though.
My 7 points go to Greece
Okay so... I like the song. Yeah it's basic but it's fun. Now... Stefania's performance... The green screen thing was so stupid. I'm first hand embarassed. Her delivery too was not good. The stone cold face that screams "Western Europe" ain't gonna cut it sweetie. I get that she might have been nervous but then again she always looks like she's lost or uninterested so yeah... I'm not happy with the performance or the white girl dancing and I honestly wouldn't have cared if she didn't make it. Ever since 2018 most Greeks pretend Greece doesn't compete and we focus on Cyprus anyway so... 7 points is still me being waaaaay too nice!
My 8 points go to Serbia
At first I was worried the song wasn't gonna be as good as their much catchier Hasta la vista from last year but the girls KILLED it. Voted for them too. Good job Hurricane.
My 10 points go to San Marino
I loved every single thing about Senhit (andFloRida's) performance! She is Queen. Period. Voted for her too.
Finally, my 12 points go to Moldova
I voted ten fucking times for Sugar and I regret none of them. Yes the performance was not tier but the song and Natalia's energy is so amazing. I don't care if you hoes are mad because your underwhelming faves didn't make it, Sugar is a pure Eurovision song and it screams 00s, a.k.a. objectively the best Eurovision period so sit down and be quiet.

Eurovision 2021 pre-show ranking #26 - #1
I know the rehearsals are already out but I’m not gonna take them into account for this ranking since I might as well just do a ranking of the actual broadcasted live performances then. Ideally the following songs would be part of my dream final on Saturday. #39-#25
26. VICTORIA - Growing Up Is Getting Old - Bulgaria 🇧🇬: I begrudgingly accept Victoria's decision choosing this over "imaginary friend" (she seemed to have visible troubles singing it live after all) but gosh, it’s kind of hard for me to warm up to this. "imaginary friend" figuratively moved me to another plane of existence. I do think this song has the perfect set up for some amazing staging. (2020/2021)
25. Blind Channel - Dark Side - Finland 🇫🇮: Yesss Finland, give me that darkness. I wish I could unhear the lyrics tho because it’s teetering pretty close to edge territory. Okay, I guess it has crossed that threshold long ago, but still, rock songs are a rarity on this show that I will cherish no matter their flaws. (2020/2021)
24. Hurricane - LOCO LOCO - Serbia 🇷🇸: They’ve come to slay like a tropical weather phenomenon. I can already see the shreds of their fellow competitors lining their path. (2020/2021)
23. Blas Cantó - Voy A Quedarme - Spain 🇪🇸: It took a tone-downed, more intimate acoustic version for  this me to connect with this song, but somehow it managed to flip a  switch and now I get incredibly emotional even when I listen to the  official version. I’d definitely prefer the acoustic version to be performed on the actual show though. (2020/2021)
22. Jeangu Macrooy - Birth Of A New Age - The Netherlands 🇳🇱: The lyrics feel refreshingly meaningful. It fills me with real warmth and good vibes as a whole. (2020/2021)
21. Anxhela Peristeri - Karma - Albania 🇦🇱: Albania is bringing drama and I’m living for it. Very effective revamp to make the song more memorable. (2020/2021)
20. Samanta Tina - The Moon is Rising - Latvia 🇱🇻: What’s up with that dreadful “eh EH eh EH” background track?? It’s driving me up the wall. Still, I’m floored by Samanta’s powerful vocals. It’s a pity the final misses the actual blood moon occurence, the lunar ecplise on May 26 by a few days. Oh well, it’s not like it can be seen from Europe this time anyway. (2020/2021)
19. The Roop - Discoteque - Lithuania 🇱🇹: The Roop really took their song from last year and turned it dark and in order to balance it out they changed the colors of their outfits to bright yellow. During all this some of the hypnotic qualities of “On Fire” was lost but the new song is still lots of quirky fun. (2020/2021)
18. Ana Soklič - Amen - Slovenia 🇸🇮: Simply glorious. What a woman, what a voice. The way the song develops is bombastic. (2020/2021)
17. Natalia Gordienko - SUGAR - Moldova 🇲🇩: The refrain and the rest of the song sound so mismatched to me lol. Still, the contrast between the bright sugary visuals and somewhat darkish, even sinister tone of the music is doing it for me. (2020/2021)
16. Montaigne - Technicolour - Australia 🇦🇺:  I can’t stand “Don’t Break Me”, so Montaigne doing a 180 degree turn  was well appreciated. This sounds sooo difficult to sing so total props  for that. Hope she nails it during the liveshows. (2020/2021)
15. Lesley Roy - Maps - Ireland 🇮🇪: This gives me enough energy to travel the Irish plains all on my own. Gosh, I miss travelling. (2020/2021)
14. The Black Mamba - Love Is On My Side - Portugal 🇵🇹: Never got the hype  for “Dancing in the Stars“, so if Portugal had to send a song in English  I’m glad it ended up being this one. I love Tatanka’s raspy voice and  the song just oozes style as a whole. I was surprised how bittersweet the lyrics actually are after listening more closely and that makes me like it even more. (2020/2021)
13. Måneskin - Zitti E Buoni - Italy 🇮🇹: F*CK ME UP. I have high hopes for you, Italy. Also  I’m totally over the fact that Irama was not able to perform live on  San Remo this year due to Covid-related issues and thus surrendered any  realistic chances of "La genesi del tuo colore" taking the win and  competing on ESC, I swear I am *sobs* (2020/2021)
12. Daði og Gagnamagnið - 10 Years - Iceland 🇮🇸: That bait and switch at the start kills me. I also unironically like this a lot more than “Think About Things”. (2020/2021)
11. Manizha - Russian Woman - Russia 🇷🇺:  Are my ears deceiving me? A Russian entry that is NOT an inoffensive  pop ballad in English playing it totally safe? I guess Little Big for  2020 was not an anomaly after all. I LOVE the traditional-sounding  chanting used for the chorus and the energy is infectious. (2020/2021)
10. Efendi - Mata Hari - Azerbaijan 🇦🇿: Another entry, another banger. I love her harsh pronounciation of the lyrics. (2020/2021)
9. Destiny - Je Me Casse - Malta 🇲🇹: Talk about a glow-up from last year. Malta is absolutely bringing the funk and the sass. (2020/2021)
8. Vasil - Here I Stand - North Macedonia 🇲🇰:  This song is FEELINGS and I totally feel it! Ugh, I’m such a softie for  heartfelt, breaking-down-your-emotional-walls-type of songs. (2020/2021)
7. Eden Alene - Set Me Free - Israel 🇮🇱:  The revamp catapulted this song from the very bottom of my list to this  spot. It’s little things like the inflection after “on my own” among  others that make this song such a joy to listen to. So many little  details to explore. (2020/2021)
6. Elena Tsagrinou - El Diablo - Cyprus 🇨🇾:  Another year, another powerhouse of a song by Cyprus. This is my favorite by far out of the last few years though, even surpassing  “Fuego”, judging alone by the song itself. The drop literally takes my breath away. (2020/2021)
5. Albina - Tick-Tock - Croatia 🇭🇷: Who knew Croatia would deliver the catchiest beat this year? (2020/2021)
4. Stefania - Last Dance - Greece 🇬🇷:  Say hello to Dua Lipa “Physical”’s long-lost sister. And just like the  former I have the latter playing non-stop. I have yet to get sick of it.  It gets me so pumped up, I love it. (2020/2021)
3. Gjon's Tears - Tout l’Univers - Switzerland 🇨🇭: Sensitive.  Sublime. Majestic. It was like witnessing the ocean at high and low  tide. At one moment deceivingly calm, the next I’m swept away by a  riptide of thundering sounds and delicious falsetto. (2020/2021)
2. Go_A - SHUM - Ukraine 🇺🇦: I literally spasmed out in ecstatic bliss when I first listened to this. I think it was some kind of combination of Kateryna's piercing vocals that strike right through my hear, the intoxicating ethnic elements and droning bass, all delivered at an ever increasing speed that drove me into a literal ethno-rave-fuelled frenzy. (2020/2021)
1. Barbara Pravi - Voilà - France 🇫🇷: The first time I saw Barbara’s national final performance I was transfixed. I was clinging to every word escaping her lips, my heart almost stopping at each moment my ears weren't filled with her angelic voice. I was flooded with all kinds of emotions, particularly with an existential longing for something I couldn’t possibly describe.  Excellent use of monochrome lighting and costumes as well which I’m sure was supposed to emulate the feeling of black-and-white films of the past. (2020/2021)

Semifinal 2 of Eurovision is coming up. Here is my personal ranking:
Albania: people are sleeping on Karma. I think it's gorgeous and emotional. I'm hoping the juries boost this one a bit because I get the impression that the language barrier is part of the reason fans seem to struggle to connect with this one.
San marino: Adrenalina is fun and funky. Flo Rida or no Rida, Senhit is going to slay the stage, and I have no worries about this one going through
Latvia: another fav of mine that people don't want to acknowledge for some reason. Samanta Tina is really giving us everything with her voice, and the green outfit she picked for her performance is so fun. I really hope she manages to secure a spot in the final, but I do worry.
Finland: we do love to see rock at eurovision. This song has a very nostalgic sound for those of us who were young and angsty in the 2010s. I think Blind Chanel is comfortably in the final.
Serbia: Loco Loco is fun and silly. The ladies of Hurricane all have lovely voices and we know they can nail a choreography while singing. I look forward to seeing this live.
Switzerland: beautiful. I normally dislike when men put a lot of falsetto into their performances as it is rarely as nice a sound as their normal register, but Gjon's Tears really makes it work. The song is very emotional and we can expect to see it in the final.
Estonia: Lucky One is a nice little pop ballad, and while it might not be the most mind blowing song out there, I do like it.
Greece: Apparently this song is getting a lot of buzz, but I have never been a fan of the disco/electronica revival. Last Dance is nice and Stefania's voice is great, but I do prefer Superg!rl and wish she had kept some of that sound for her track for this year.
Poland: Is it generic? Absolutely. But it is nice and exactly what it is advertised to be. This will probably be too low on most people's rankings to quite get the points for qualification but it's a decent enough song by my personal preferences.
Iceland: 10 Years is not at all my genre, but it is quite sweet and also thank fuck they are switching up the outfits a bit for Rotterdam. The group is quirky and fun, and I do expect them to make it.
Austria: I have a hard time connecting with this song as the metaphors are a bit mixed, but Vincent Bueno has an amazing voice and a lot of charisma. This song might eek in and I suppose I can't be mad if it does.
Moldova: Sugar is fun and sexy. I can't exactly put my finger on why the song doesn't work for me, but I just find it a bit meh. The rehearsal footage suggests that it will be pretty fun to watch. This is another on that I won't be mad to see qualify over some of my other picks.
Bulgaria: Victoria's voice is lovely, but this song is so sleepy and a bit fake deep. People really seem to love this one, but I'm a bit bored whenever it's on
Czech republic: the song is fun and light hearted, but some of the word choice rubs me the wrong way.
Denmark: why is this closing the show? It blew right past retro inspired songs like Greece, Lithuania, and Iceland have and went straight to old fashioned. Like, I guess it's fun enough of a sound, and props to the gents for singing in Danish, but this song is gonna tank spectacularly.
Portugal: if I had a nickel for every song about a dutch sex worker this year, I would only have two nickels but it's weird that it happened twice. Memes aside, I find the lead singer's falsetto whiny and grating. The song in itself is pleasant enough, if maybe a bit off color given that I don't know if the woman it is based on consented to his writing it or if she is going to get anything for her life story being broadcast like this. So like, I see why some people do like it, but I am squicked.
Georgia: boring. I forget You exists when my attention hasn't been called to it and I can barely remember the melody when I it has.

I’ve started keeping a list of questions, remnants of a past life that I now need a beat or two to remember, if I can remember at all: What time do parties end? How tall is my boss? What does a bar smell like? Are babies heavy? Does my dentist have a mustache? On what street was the good sandwich place near work, the one that toasted its bread? How much does a movie popcorn cost? What do people talk about when they don’t have a global disaster to talk about all the time? You have to wear high heels the whole night? It’s more baffling than distressing, most of the time.
Full text of the (excellent) article is under the cut. (The Atlantic, March 8th, 2021)
I first became aware that I was losing my mind in late December. It was a Friday night, the start of my 40-somethingth pandemic weekend: Hours and hours with no work to distract me, and outside temperatures prohibitive of anything other than staying in. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to fill the time. “What did I used to … do on weekends?” I asked my boyfriend, like a soap-opera amnesiac. He couldn’t really remember either.
Since then, I can’t stop noticing all the things I’m forgetting. Sometimes I grasp at a word or a name. Sometimes I walk into the kitchen and find myself bewildered as to why I am there. (At one point during the writing of this article, I absentmindedly cleaned my glasses with nail-polish remover.) Other times, the forgetting feels like someone is taking a chisel to the bedrock of my brain, prying everything loose.

Everywhere I turn, the fog of forgetting has crept in. A friend of mine recently confessed that the morning routine he’d comfortably maintained for a decade—wake up before 7, shower, dress, get on the subway—now feels unimaginable on a literal level: He cannot put himself back there. Another has forgotten how to tie a tie. A co-worker isn’t sure her toddler remembers what it’s like to go shopping in a store. The comedian Kylie Brakeman made a joke video of herself attempting to recall pre-pandemic life, the mania flashing across her face: “You know what I miss, is, like, those night restaurants that served alcohol. What were those called?” she asks. “And there were those, like, big men outside who would check your credit card to make sure you were 41?”

Jen George, a community-college teacher from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, told me she is losing her train of thought in the middle of a sentence more and more often. Meanwhile, her third grader, who is attending in-person school, keeps leaving his books, papers, and lunch at home. Inny Ekeolu, a 19-year-old student from Ireland, says she has found herself forgetting how to do things she used to do on a regular basis: swiping her bus pass, paying for groceries. Recently she came across a photo of a close friend she hadn’t seen since lockdown and found that she couldn’t recognize her. “It wasn’t like I had forgotten her existence,” she told me. “But if I had bypassed her on the street, I wouldn’t have said hi.” Rachel Kowert, a research psychologist in Ottawa, used to have a standing Friday-night dinner with her neighbors—and went completely blank when one of them recently mentioned it. “It was really shocking,” Kowert told me. “This was something I really loved, and had done for a long time, and I had totally forgotten.”
This is the fog of late pandemic, and it is brutal. In the spring, we joked about the Before Times, but they were still within reach, easily accessible in our shorter-term memories. In the summer and fall, with restrictions loosening and temperatures rising, we were able to replicate some of what life used to be like, at least in an adulterated form: outdoor drinks, a day at the beach. But now, in the cold, dark, featureless middle of our pandemic winter, we can neither remember what life was like before nor imagine what it’ll be like after.
To some degree, this is a natural adaptation. The sunniest optimist would point out that all this forgetting is evidence of the resilience of our species. Humans forget a great deal of what happens to us, and we tend to do it pretty quickly—after the first 24 hours or so. “Our brains are very good at learning different things and forgetting the things that are not a priority,” Tina Franklin, a neuroscientist at Georgia Tech, told me. As the pandemic has taught us new habits and made old ones obsolete, our brains have essentially put actions like taking the bus and going to restaurants in deep storage, and placed social distancing and coughing into our elbows near the front of the closet. When our habits change back, presumably so will our recall.
That’s the good news. The pandemic is still too young to have yielded rigorous, peer-reviewed studies about its effects on cognitive function. But the brain scientists I spoke with told me they can extrapolate based on earlier work about trauma, boredom, stress, and inactivity, all of which do a host of very bad things to a mammal’s brain.
“We’re all walking around with some mild cognitive impairment,” said Mike Yassa, a neuroscientist at UC Irvine. “Based on everything we know about the brain, two of the things that are really good for it are physical activity and novelty. A thing that’s very bad for it is chronic and perpetual stress.” Living through a pandemic—even for those who are doing so in relative comfort—“is exposing people to microdoses of unpredictable stress all the time,” said Franklin, whose research has shown that stress changes the brain regions that control executive function, learning, and memory.
That stress doesn’t necessarily feel like a panic attack or a bender or a sleepless night, though of course it can. Sometimes it feels like nothing at all. “It’s like a heaviness, like you’re waking up to more of the same, and it’s never going to change,” George told me, when I asked what her pandemic anxiety felt like. “Like wading through something thicker than water. Maybe a tar pit.” She misses the sound of voices.
Prolonged boredom is, somewhat paradoxically, hugely stressful, Franklin said. Our brains hate it. “What’s very clear in the literature is that environmental enrichment—being outside of your home, bumping into people, commuting, all of these changes that we are collectively being deprived of—is very associated with synaptic plasticity,” the brain’s inherent ability to generate new connections and learn new things, she said. In the 1960s, the neuroscientist Marian Diamond conducted a series of experiments on rats in an attempt to understand how environment affects cognitive function. Time after time, the rats raised in “enriched” cages—ones with toys and playmates—performed better at mazes.
Ultimately, said Natasha Rajah, a psychology professor at McGill University, in Montreal, our winter of forgetting may be attributable to any number of overlapping factors. “There’s just so much going on: It could be the stress, it could be the grief, it could be the boredom, it could be depression,” she said. “It sounds pretty grim, doesn’t it?”
The share of Americans reporting symptoms of anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, or both roughly quadrupled from June 2019 to December 2020, according to a Census Bureau study released late last year. What’s more, we simply don’t know the long-term effects of collective, sustained grief. Longitudinal studies of survivors of Chernobyl, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina show elevated rates of mental-health problems, in some cases lasting for more than a decade.
I have a job that allows me to work from home, an immune system and a set of neurotransmitters that tend to function pretty well, a support network, a savings account, decent Wi-Fi, plenty of hand sanitizer. I have experienced the pandemic from a position of obscene privilege, and on any given day I’d rank my mental health somewhere north of “fine.” And yet I feel like I have spent the past year being pushed through a pasta extruder. I wake up groggy and spend every day moving from the couch to the dining-room table to the bed and back. At some point night falls, and at some point after that I close work-related browser windows and open leisure-related ones. I miss my little rat friends, but I am usually too tired to call them.
Read: The most likely timeline for life to return to normal
Sometimes I imagine myself as a Sim, a diamond-shaped cursor hovering above my head as I go about my day. Tasks appear, and I do them. Mealtimes come, and I eat. Needs arise, and I meet them. I have a finite suite of moods, a limited number of possible activities, a set of strings being pulled from far offscreen. Everything is two-dimensional, fake, uncanny. My world is as big as my apartment, which is not very big at all.
“We’re trapped in our dollhouses,” said Kowert, the psychologist from Ottawa, who studies video games. “It’s just about surviving, not thriving. No one is working at their highest capacity.” She has played The Sims on and off for years, but she always gives up after a while—it’s too repetitive.
Earlier versions of The Sims had an autonomous memory function, according to Marina DelGreco, a staff writer for Game Rant. But in The Sims 3, the system was buggy; it bloated file sizes and caused players’ saved progress to delete. So The Sims 4, released in 2014, does not automatically create memories. PC users can manually enter them, and Sims can temporarily feel feelings: happy, tense, flirty. But for the most part, a Sim is a hollow vessel, more like a machine than a living thing.
The game itself doesn’t have a term for this, but the internet does: “smooth brain,” or sometimes “head empty,” which I first started noticing sometime last summer. Today, the TikTok user @smoothbrainb1tch has nearly 100,000 followers, and stoners on Twitter are marveling at the fact that their “silky smooth brain” was once capable of calculus.
This is, to be clear, meant to be an aspirational state. It’s the step after galaxy brain, because the only thing better than being a genius in a pandemic is being intellectually unencumbered by mass grief. People are celebrating “smooth brain Saturday” and chasing the ideal summer vibe: “smooth skin, smooth brain.” One frequently reposted meme shows a photograph of a glossy, raw chicken breast, with the caption “Cant think=no sad .” This is juxtaposed against a biology-textbook picture of a healthy brain, which is wrinkled, oddly translucent, and the color of canned tuna. The choice seems obvious.
Some Saturday not too long from now, I will go to a party or a bar or even a wedding. Maybe I’ll hold a baby, and maybe it will be heavy. Inevitably, I will kick my shoes off at some point. I won’t have to wonder about what I do on weekends, because I’ll be doing it. I’ll kiss my friends and try their drinks and marvel at how everyone is still the same, but a little different, after the year we all had. My brain won’t be smooth anymore, but being wrinkly won’t feel so bad. My synapses will be made plastic by the complicated, strange, utterly novel experience of being alive again, human again. I can’t wait.

I’m feeling a lot happier with tonight’s results than I did on Tuesday. Admittedly I only got 6 of my top 10 based entirely on songs, but based on performances this seems like a fair set of qualifiers!
Qualifiers:
Albania: Albania might be sending the same song over and over but it’s a decent song, and Anxhela gave one of, if not the strongest vocal performance tonight. I was very happy to see her qualify!
Serbia: Not entirely my thing, but Hurricane did exactly what the song needed, so I’m happy to see them qualify. Though I will say it did feel at points like the Sanja show rather than them always being a cohesive group.
Bulgaria: The staging was admittedly very good but it did nothing to change my feelings about the song, I just found the whole thing tedious. It’s still absolutely a deserved qualifier though!
Moldova: Of the ten qualifiers this is the one I’m least happy with despite the song landing in my top ten of the semi. I found the staging a little dull, and even if she managed to hold that final note, I was not convinced by Natalia’s vocal performance for most of the song. If I could, I would swap this one out for Denmark.
Portugal: Portugal so often get underrated at this contest (I don’t think I’ll ever be over 2019) but I’m so glad to see them qualify! I like the song itself but that performance took it to a whole other level, everything about the staging was perfect, and the vocals were on point.
Iceland: Even if they can’t perform it live, Iceland have one of the best overall packages in this contest, and I’m so glad they were able to use their rehearsal performance, it was brilliant! I’m so pleased to see them reach the final, where they’ll hopefully get a great result!
San Marino: I’ve said from the start that even if the song isn’t 100% my thing it fully deserves to qualify, and I adored the performance tonight, it was trashy in all the right ways. I’m very glad that Flo Rida did actually make it, not that this wouldn’t have qualified without him, but because after all the hype it would have been awful if he didn’t.
Switzerland: I was one of the people who was skeptical about this performance based on the second rehearsal snippet, and I was so glad to be proven wrong, I fell in love with this song all over again! I’m really lucky this year that I like just about all the songs that have a shot at winning!
Greece: I wasn’t impressed with the greenscreen effect, it was very shabby with shadows showing through, and I’m still not keen on the song, I just can’t get into it for some reason. I can understand why people like this, and I was expecting it to qualify based on general fandom opinion going in, but it’s still not for me.
Finland: So glad to see them through, unlike in semi 1 where I relaxed before the final qualifier was announced, I got very stressed that Blind Channel might just miss out! AWS only qualified in 10th place back in 2018 (though they’re very different songs, anything under the broad rock umbrella gets lumped together at Eurovision). I shouldn’t have worried, they were brilliant tonight, and even if I won’t be voting for them on Saturday (probably) I’m excited to see them again!
Non-Qualifiers:
Austria: Vincent gave a performance he can be proud of, but I never understood why the bookies had this qualifying, there were stronger ballads in this semi.
Czech Republic: I love the song, but I didn’t enjoy Benny’s performance, he just seemed off. Apparently he’s been like that throughout rehearsals, so this doesn’t come as a surprise, and I think it’s right that this didn’t qualify.
Denmark: My biggest grower of 2021, and currently my biggest heartbreak. Honestly if you’d told me back when the dmgp songs were released I would vote for Denmark in the semi final I would have laughed! But their performance was so genuine and full of joy, I’m really going to miss this one. Maybe it was just too dated for Europe.
Estonia: Another song I really like. I thought Uku gave a decent performance, but I appreciate I’m pretty unique in liking it as much as I do, and it got lost performing so early on. I fully understand this not making it.
Georgia: This song ranks just inside my top 10 of the semi, but I don’t quite consider it a personal qualifier because I always wanted San Marino to make it, even if I’m slightly less keen on the song. I enjoyed the deep atmosphere of the performance, and I’m sure I’ll come back to it in the future, but non-qualification was fully expected for this one.
Latvia: It’s nice to finally see Samanta Tina on the Eurovision stage after all these years. Her song was always borderline, and I don’t mind it missing out. Her performance was solid but not enough to blow everyone away the way it needed to if it were to have any chance of qualifying.
Poland: I described this as an enjoyable trainwreck when liveblogging. Every other song in this semi I could make a case for a shock qualification, but not this one. I enjoyed watching the show, but this non-qualification was deserved.
Quality-wise, this semi was a bit rougher than semi 1, but I enjoyed it. When you consider that I was fully expecting Bulgaria and Greece to qualify, there was only one result I wasn’t too happy about - a big improvement from the three to four of semi 1! The final is shaping up to be really exciting, there’s so many good songs! I have absolutely no idea who will win, based on the performances we’ve seen I think victory for any of Italy, France, Malta, or Switzerland would be deserved, and while I’m really hoping for Italy, I’ll be happy enough with any of the other three.

my eurovision 2021 ranking (before rehearsals)
hey!! 🤍 i’ll try to keep this short & sweet (and bear in mind some of these are subject to change & depend on my mood) but this is my rough ranking of this year’s entries based solely on the studio cuts <3
dislike:
39. 🇩🇪 jendrik - i don’t feel hate: i knew this would be my last place since i first heard it. he seems like a nice guy but this type of music is just. not for me? in fact i don’t think i’ve ever even managed to make it all the way through since my first listen :/
38. 🇱🇻 samanta tina - the moon is rising: i love love LOVE samanta & think she is an absolute gem but this song & me simply do not go together. that being said i appreciate both her voice & the message
37. 🇵🇱 rafał - the ride: while this is slightly catchy & seems to be an ear worm for me, i cannot take this song seriously. rafał looks ridiculous in those sunglasses in the music video. the lyrics are awful too
neither like nor dislike:
36. 🇦🇱 anxhela peristeri - karma: this is very strange because usually i am the no. 1 fan of ethnic influenced ballads at eurovision, but i just do not get this one. i can definitely see the appeal but it’s not for me
35. 🇲🇰 vasil - here i stand: i think his voice is great however the song doesn’t do much for me. i find it quite forgettable & think he was definitely capable of giving us something better which is a shame
34. 🇫🇮 blind channel - dark side: i enjoyed this quite a bit when it first came out but it’s quickly slid down my ratings. the lyrics are too edgy for me & it’s a throwback to a genre of music that i don’t really enjoy anyway. but i can appreciate that it sticks out & does something different
33. 🇨🇿 benny cristo - omaga: i was a massive fan of kemama last year & while i liked this upon first listen, i have to say its far too generic to really stick out after a while. plus some of the lyrics are a bit creepy lol. having said that i think seeing him perform it live could definitely change my opinion
32. 🇸🇪 tusse - voices: another year, another generic well produced pop song from sweden. should we be surprised anymore? it’s okay, i don’t hate it, but i’m struggling to find anything i like about it. plus the lyrics are the most “eurovision cliche lyrics” i’ve ever heard
31. 🇬🇧 james newman - embers: okay while this is ranked relatively low, i have to say this is better than anything we’ve sent since 2017. it’s a nice song, i enjoy it when it’s on, but i don’t have an urge to play it, if that makes sense?
30. 🇲🇹 destiny - je me casse: i know this is probably blasphemy but i just do not understand the hype around this song. destiny has a great voice but i don’t see how this song sticks out in anyway that it’s the favourite to win? it’s another one that i won’t skip but i won’t seek out to listen to
29. 🇦🇹 vincent bueno - amen: i do enjoy this, but i wish it just had a bit more oomph. the lyrics for the verses are good but the chorus is just lacking something. i do think this could be a dark horse to qualify though
28. 🇸🇮 ana soklič - amen: i just realised the two amens are right next to each other on my ranking lol. anyway, this is only so high because of her amazing voice. the song doesn’t really do anything for me, but you have to appreciate that level of talent
27. 🇺🇦 go_a - shum: this is one i know i’ll appreciate more live, but i just can’t get into the studio version. plus i really liked solovey last year so this one seems worse in comparison
26. 🇲🇩 natalia gordienko - sugar: this is good but i think all “dream team” songs are a little bit dated nowadays. however saying that i love the music video & moldova always improve live
25. 🇵🇹 the black mamba - love is on my side: this has been a big grower. it’s not a favourite, but i think it definitely has its niche, and i can appreciate that
24. 🇳🇱 jeangu macrooy - birth of a new age: grow was in my top 5 last year, so it was always gonna be hard for jeangu to deliver something as good. this has grown on me, but i’m still not 100% on board
like:
23. 🇳🇴 tix - fallen angel: i didn’t like this at first because i was so heartbroken that keiino didn’t win the national selection, but i’ve gotten over it now lol. it’s cheesy but in a good way, i think this act doesn’t take itself too seriously either which makes it more enjoyable
22. 🇸🇲 senhit ft flo rida - adrenalina: it’s fun, catchy, even has a surprise verse from flo rida! probably san marino’s 3rd best entry ever (justice for complice & crisalide 💔)
21. 🇨🇾 elena tsagrinou - el diablo: it’s just a very good pop song. i’m not in love with it but it’s of a very good quality (well. apart from the lyrics). i’m sure the staging will improve it even more
20. 🇬🇷 stefania - super girl: greece is one of my biggest growers from last year, i think this is a MUCH better song than supergirl was. i’m really rooting for stefania
19. 🇪🇪 uku suviste - the lucky one: this has been such a big grower, it’s insane. i can recognise it’s not the best song but i just really like it for some reason.
18. 🇪🇸 blas cantó - voy a quedarme: i’m a sucker for native language ballads, and this is a pretty standard one, but it’s good to me. blas seems like a real sweetheart too, which helps :)
17. 🇨🇭 gjon’s tears - tout l’univers: this is another one of those songs that i really should love, and while i like it, i can’t really connect with it. gjon’s entry last year was my second favourite, and unfortunately this doesn’t scratch the same itch that did, it’s still a very good song & i completely understand why it’s one of the favourites to win
16. 🇧🇪 hooverphonic - the wrong place: i really don’t like hooverphonic as a band (actually it’s mostly alex callier that i dislike) but this is just a good song. i am still upset that luka didn’t get to go to eurovision though :/
15. 🇮🇪 lesley roy - maps: another massive grower! i much prefer this to her song last year. i really hope ireland can get their shit together & give this song the staging it deserves
14. 🇦🇿 efendi - mata hari: this is basically a carbon copy of cleopatra, and i guess i liked that so i like this. however i will say it has dropped in my ranking a bit. i’m ranking this solely on the song, efendi herself is a different matter & i’m not really educated enough on what’s happening in azerbaijan/armenia to comment but from what i’ve seen it’s not the best, let’s say
13. 🇱🇹 the roop - discoteque: i prefer on fire from last year, but this is definitely not a bad effort. i can’t see it as a contender for the win though. another one i will probably enjoy much more live
12. 🇷🇴 roxen - amnesia: i really like the message of this song. i just wish she would work on her english pronunciation, but that’s a minor complaint. but i really like roxen as an artist
love:
11. 🇷🇸 hurricane - loco loco: i love girl groups, and this is no exception. vocally they’re really good, i love that it’s in serbian, & i also just really love sanja vučić lol
10. 🇭🇷 albina - tick tock: i wish this was fully in croatian, but i think it’s a great song regardless. i loved her performance at dora so hopefully they’ll do something similar/even better at esc
9. 🇧🇬 victoria - growing up is getting old: i preferred tears getting sober from last year but this is still really good. the lyrics are some of my favourite of this year, they really resonate with me. victoria is a really interesting artist & i’m really glad she got introduced to me through esc
8. 🇮🇱 eden alene - set me free: the revamp has made this move like 20 places up in my ranking lol. she is so talented & i just hope they have a good staging concept!
7. 🇮🇸 daði og gagnamagnið - 10 years: think about things was good but i think this is even better! i love the retro influences & the lyrics are so sweet
6. 🇬🇪 tornike kipiani - you: i might be one of the only people who adores this song. the lyrics paint such a clear picture of a simple, strong love. and i think it’s quiet but powerful at the right moments. i know i will be heartbroken when this doesn’t qualify :(
5. 🇫🇷 barbara pravi - voilà: i played this too much & ruined it for myself, but i love it again now. very authentically french but without overdoing it (cough 2017 staging cough), just a beautiful song
4. 🇮🇹 måneskin - zitti e buoni: i’m not a massive rock fan, but a song like this i just vibe with. it’s just so good. italy is always either my no. 1 or in my top 5 since they returned (apart from 2012 & 2014) and they’ve done it again. this is definitely a contender to win
3. 🇦🇺 montaigne - technicolour: this song is eclectic but i love it. i didn’t like don’t break me, but this is so much better, and so much more authentic to montaigne as an artist. i know it’s divisive, but i’m on the side that loves it
2. 🇩🇰 fyr og flamme - øve os på hinanden: this is just so fun. i love the 80s vibe, the performance at the national selection was simple but still very engaging. this is one i will play for many years after the contest
1. 🇷🇺 manizha - russian woman: where do i even start. native language, ethnic influenced sound, important message, charismatic performer. this song is amazing. and i’m so glad i’ve found manizha to listen to!
so that’s it!! if anyone wants to chat about their thoughts please message me!! 🤍

Eurovision 2021 - part two
It’s the season of me constantly talking about Eurovision again. And because no one wants to listen to me, I’ll post my opinion on this year’s songs here.
First semi-final, second semi-final, Big-5 + The Netherlands.
Obviously, there’s no hate, it’s just my personal opinion on the songs.
Let’s go.
Second semi-final
San Marino (Senhit – Adrenalina) – It’s such a bop, I really like it (even though it’s annoyingly stuck in my head). And I would’ve never thought that one day I’ll see Flo Rida as a part of San Marino’s Eurovision entry.
Estonia (Uku Suviste – The Lucky One) – Uku has a nice, deep voice, but the song itself is rather boring. I’m definitely not a huge fan of it.
Czech Republic (Benny Cristo –  omaga) – It’s a nice tune to vibe to. I don’t have any strong feelings about it, but I like it nonetheless.
Greece (Stefania –  Last Dance) – I like this one. Maybe it’s not my favorite, but it has nice tune, it’s energetic and Stefania is a great singer.
Austria (Vincent Bueno – Amen) – Unfortunately, that’s a little bit boring song. Maybe with a staging it’ll be a little bit better, but I don’t get my hopes up.
Poland (RAFAŁ – The Ride) – I have such mixed feelings about it. I don’t wanna comment on what I personally feel about Rafał, so I’ll focus just on the song. I’m happy that my country is finally sending something pop and I even like the song itself, however I’m not a fan of Rafał’s voice and I worry about how he’ll sound without playback and autotune.
Moldova (Natalia Gordienko – SUGAR) – It’s definitely not what I expected, but it’s a nice surprise. It definitely falls into the ‘guilty pleasure’ category though.
Iceland (Daði og Gagnamagnið – 10 Years) – They’ve set the bar really high with “Think about things”. Maybe “10 years” isn’t as catchy, but I still can’t get it out of my head. Plus, somehow they made cheesy song that doesn’t sound cheesy and I love it. I’m sure they won’t go unnoticed.
Serbia (Hurricane – LOCO LOCO) – I love this energetic bomb, especially that they sing in Serbian instead of English. They’ll light Eurovision stage on fire.
Georgia (Tornike Kipiani – You) – I don’t want to hate on this song, because I don’t think it’s a bad song. However, I’m a little bit worried that I’ll fall asleep during this performance.
Albania (Anxhela Peristeri – Karma) – When I heard 1st version of this song, I wasn’t a huge fan of it. But the revamped version has so much power and it sounds like taken out of a movie. Also, additional points for singing in Albanian.
Portugal (The Black Mamba – Love Is On My Side) – It’s not my favorite, however I really enjoy Pedro’s voice and vintage vibes.
Bulgaria (VICTORIA – Growing Up Is Getting Old) – Victoria has a beautiful voice, but the song is a little bit boring. Not my cup of tea.
Finland (Blind Channel – Dark Side) – Have I already mentioned that I LOVE rock songs at Eurovision? Because I do. A lot. I don’t care, which place they’ll end up on, it’ll still be one of my favorite songs this year.
Latvia (Samanta Tina – The Moon is Rising) – I had such huge expectations about this one and at the end I was a little bit disappointed wit it. Samanta has an amazing voice, but the song is monotonous. However, I think that it’s the kind of song that will sound thousands times better in live version, so I still have high hopes about it.
Switzerland (Gjon's Tears – Tout l’Univers) – At first, I didn’t enjoy it that much, but it grew on me. It has some cinematic sound to it. And Gjon has as really beautiful voice (plus, I love those high notes).
Denmark (Fyr & Flamme – Øve Os På Hinanden) – I like 80’s, just not this type of 80’s. However, I appreciate that they sing in Danish. Plus, they’re having fun and that’s all that matters at the end of the day.
Who would I send to the Grand Final: San Marino, Czech Republic, Greece, Moldova, Iceland, Serbia, Albania, Finland, Latvia, Switzerland.
However, it’s a really strong year, so the choice was extremely hard as everybody deserves to be in the Final. I wish all the artists good luck in May!

Eurovision Semifinal 2 reactions/thoughts:
Now watching on Peacock.  Ah, the sweet sound of no commentary.
San Marino, Senhit, "Adrenalina" – Well that was a a good way to kick off the show.  I guess I get it now.
Estonia, Uku Suviste, "The Lucky One" – It really invites comparisons to "Storm" doesn't it.
Czech Republic, Benny Cristo, "Omaga" – They very wisely excise the worst part of the song by not having him sing "why don't you let me have it."  Doesn't quite go anywhere but thankfully less cringy.  If this were the first time I had heard the song, I would probably like it better.
Greece, Stefania, "Last Dance" – I would still like to hear a metal power ballad version of this song.  She sings well but it is lacking some passion.
Austria, Vincent Bueno, "Amen" – He sounds very good, but he looks like he's trying to do all of the moves he is supposed to do.
Poland, Rafal, "The Ride"  – It certainly leans into the '80s feel.  Started off well but feels like it could use more dynamic variation.  It kind of stays in the same gear the whole way through, despite his efforts.
Hey, they did mention the Eurovision movie. I should watch that again.  Wonder if we will see Molly Sandén back at Melodifestivalen at some point.
Moldova, Natalia Gordienko, "Sugar" – I dunno.  It was fine?
Iceland, Daði og Gagnamagnið, "10 Years" – Sounds very good. Oh, nice wind machine. Unfortunate that they could not perform live, but it was hard to tell.
Serbia, Hurricane, "Loco Loco" – I really don't like this song much, but the performance has great energy, and they are performing for an audience instead of just trying to hit their marks.
Georgia, Tornike Kipiani, "You" – I find this song very calming.  I like the firefly effect.  Think it could do with fewer camera cuts at the start and a bigger build.
Albania, Anxhela Peristeri, "Karma" – She does a good job alone on stage.  The camera work and lighting (and wind machine, and fog) supports her well.
Portugal, The Black Mamba, "Love is on My Side" – Different framing.  Shadow orchestra is a fun touch. Very professional.
Helena Paparizou.  2005 seems like a different Eurovision universe.
Bulgaria, Victoria, "Growing Up is Getting Old" – I find her voice much more enjoyable live, since on the recording it sounds a bit twee.  Reminds me of Frodo and Sam on Mt. Doom; I suspect that was not the intent.  Very effective changes in lighting and camera view with the big choral crescendo.  This really works for me.
Finland, Blind Channel, "Dark Side" – No, not for me.
Latvia, Samanta Tina, "The Moon is Rising" – The staging was not nearly dramatic enough to fit the song.
Switzerland, Gjon's Tears, "Tout l'Univers" – He sounds much better live than on the recording.  Their lighting is very aggressive.
Denmark, Fyr og Flamme, “Øve Os På Hinanden” – This is the song most likely to get stuck in my head for no reason.
My ranking:
1. Bulgaria 2. Iceland 3. San Marino 4. Albania 5. Latvia 6. Portugal 7. Serbia 8. Georgia 9. Denmark 10. Switzerland 11. Moldova 12. Czech Republic 13. Estonia 14. Finland 15. Austria 16. Greece 17. Poland
Finland with the Eurovision movie reference, huh.
These winners-reminiscing segments are quite touching.
Ah, the Mamas.
France looks intriguing. UK staging. Hmm.
Glad my top four are in at least, disappointed for Latvia.

Under the read more are the set lists and schedules for today’s Los Angeles show! Feel free to use the set lists for reference as to who’s sharing a stage, which songs are performed, etc. Each show we’ll be changing up the people who share a stage and orders of performance.
The show is done in a large, outdoor venue with three different stages/areas. There are vendors, DJ’s between sets, and etc. Feel free to use your imagination! The show will last from 6-12 PM, and each band will perform for 45-60 minutes.
We’re going to make each show a competition. On the admin team, we’re going to be keeping track of the dashboard on the day of the shows, and keeping track of the points earned. Below is how to get points.
Each time someone posts/reblogs about the show - photos, instagram, twitter, music posts, etc. - we will give the band/artist ten points.
Each time someone posts about a band/artist, we will give the artist that’s been posted about and the poster ten points. For example: @tinacc tweets: Rachel Berry’s set was great! Almost as good as ours 😉  (Rachel and Tina would each get ten points.)
We will give ten points for every gossip/confession we receive about a band/artist on the gossip blog, on the day of the show.
We will give ten points for each anon answered on the day of the show.
We will give twenty points for every starter - f2f or dash starter - that mentions the show.
We will give thirty points to both bands in the event of a surprise collaboration.
We will give thirty points for every show based self para - watching or performing.

On Saturday, March 17th, 2018 WACO presented the 2nd annual Wearable Art Gala hosted by Tina-Knowles Lawson and Richard Lawson, a tribute to provide teen mentorship programs and a place where individuals are free to express themselves through Art and Theatre. The theme this year was……
Yes! You guessed it, Black Panther, WACO to Wakanda to be exact,  very creative by the way, and sponsored by Shea Moisture.
What a time to be black right?
The stars of the night were Beyonce and Blue Ivy, the dynamic duo who were donned in gold encrusted avant-garde gowns. Beyonce custom design gown was inspired by an ancient Nubian warrior queen designed by Indian fashion house Falguni Shane Peacock. It consisted of a gold metallic cutout with a gold deep ruffled trail. Blue Ivy was garbed in the replica accessorized with a gold helmet-like hat.
According to Vanity Fair, the climax of the night was the bidding war carried out by young Blue Ivy. It started with her bidding $17,000 on a sculpture of young Sidney Poitier, Blue then raised the stakes to $19,000, Jay-Z then playfully took the paddle from his daughter. Tyler Perry later went home with the portrait, but that did not deter Blue.
Oh No, Blue was like I gotta get something from this auction.
Blue then bid $10,000 on a 36” x 36” piece of art composed of deconstructed law books from Indiana and medical books from California, created by artist Samuel Levi Jones.
Also, the wearable art Gala honoured Jay-Z’s mom, Gloria Carter, with the Everyday People Award. Carter co-founded the Shawn Carter Foundation with the aim to aid individuals to attend college by providing scholarships and mentoring. An elated Jay-Z took the stage and paid accolades to his mother. Meanwhile, Michelle Obama, the former first lady also made a tribute to Beyonce for her humanitarian work especially helping the people in her hometown of Houston recover from the devastating hurricane last August.

Ike & Tina Turner: Young and old are turned on by hard rock and earthy soul brew of husband-wife team
The three sleekly gowned girls spring onstage shimmering like leaves fighting a hurricane. Soon, they're followed by their lithe, mini-skirted leader, shaking and twisting parts of her anatomy that aren't supposed to be able to move quite so spectacularly. She's sexy, throaty-voiced Tina Turner, today's "high priestess of rock."
Working with the quartet of girls and providing much of the inspiration for their gyrating movements are nine musicians, one of whom is a guitar player with heavy mustache, Van Dyke and brooding eyes. This is Ike Turner, the other half of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue.
The band "cooks" as the Ikettes flutter about the stage and as Tina wails, "I want to take you higher . . . baby, baby, baby light my fire." The audience roars and Ike and Tina break into one of their latest recordings. "Working together we can make change . . . working together we can help better things." Their listeners shout back. Baptist style, "That's right! Sing it!" and the mellow evening of hard-rock rolls on.
The audience response is not new to Ike and Tina but the place is. Ten years ago they heard the same shouts in all the little clubs on the "chitlin' circuit" throughout the South, but now they're working at top-drawer places like the International Hotel in Las Vegas and at the really big rock concert spots like Madison Square Garden in New York. Where they once were paid $450 a night, they now receive $15,000 for an evening's work. The Revue has traveled throughout Europe and guest television appearances have included the Andy Williams Show, Ed Sullivan Show, Tonight Show, and Pearl Bailey Show.
Ike and Tina, whose real name is Annie Mae, first met in 1956 when Ike played with a group called Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm and Tina lived with a sister and worked at a St. Louis hospital. Tina and her sister knew the group and often went to the club where they played. The beginning of her career with Ike was, she says, "one night when the drummer put a microphone in front of my sister for her to sing. She said, 'no,' and I took the microphone and started singing. I did several numbers with them that night. Later I joined the group."
Their first break came in 1959 when Ike wrote a tune titled, Fool in Love for a singer who failed to show up for a record session. Since he already had rented the studio facilities and since Tina was familiar with the lyrics, Ike decided to give her a shot at recording the number. Not long after its release, the record sold a million copies. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue got its first big exposure, though, in 1966 when it toured Europe with the Rolling Stones and its record, River Deep, Mountain High, became No. 1 on the British charts. Strangely, the record never sold well in the U.S. market.
Recalling that, Ike says, "The black radio stations kept telling me, 'It's too pop' and the white stations claimed that it was 'too r and b' (rhythm and blues). Black artists are always branded r and b, so therefore there's little or no chance of breaking into the Top 40 market."
