Hi Bel! Some LCDP thoughts because I like your analysis. If Tokio were a man, she'd be the standard of action movies: reckless, head on, unpredictable, hardened. If Rio were a girl, on the other hand, he'd be the typical love interest: vulnerable, sensitive, emotional, kind. Do you think if the gender roles had been inverted in the script, there would be a different audience reception for their characters? Thank you!

Hi, anon! Aww, thank you so much, I do like to rant about LCDP and it's almost unbelievable someone out there actually reads my shenanigans… 🤭

Now shortening it for those who don't:

YES, I've been saying that for ages now. I'm pretty sure Tokyo would be a fan favorite had she been a man. She's reckless, tough, short fused, hot blooded, bloody hot AND has her heart in the right place - damn! the masses would have loved a male character like her. Loved and lost before so became a lone wolf, got the walls brought down for love again and eventually dies for the family? Male!Tokyo would be right there next to Berlin in fandom preferences, being shipped together and ruling all the other ships. But Tokyo was born a woman, therefore, she had no excuse to be that great. She was always prone to be hated. Misogyny runs deeps within fandoms, even though most people don't want to admit it.

Not so sure if female!Rio would be better accepted, though. Misogyny runs really deep - female characters are not allowed to be tough and reckless (or they'll turn into 'bitches'), but they also can't be vulnerable and sensitive (or they'll be labeled as 'useless'). I mean, look at the audience's response to Mónica/Stockholm's inner struggles through part 5… Rio was the youngest of the gang, he was 'hired' to be the hacker, then they put guns on his hands and became the one who got caught, underwent some terrible torture, and when he starts displaying evident signs of PTSD, both characters and audience dismiss his feelings and push him to "toughen up". I feel like such arc would always vote them to be part of fandom's least favorites, but Rio as a girl might have gotten less hate for not having as many expectations attached.

And by ' audience, ' of course, I'm referring to the most vocal part of the fandom. It's my overall understanding from casual viewers that Tokyo was pretty cool and Rio was just a boy trapped inside a man's body. But you probably already know that… 😉😊

I agree with you about Berlin's character, he wasn't ruined at least. But I also think he doesn't work that well as the main character, especially in a show that's main focus is the romantic plot (ngl, i got bored with it). I know it's stupid to compare it to lcdp, but there is a huge difference in quality between Sergio(+Tokio) and Andrés as the leading characters, and i think it's partly due to the fact that Sergio's both heists had great motivations and that way the story was way more complex.

I agree with you too, anon. His obsession with some hollywood romance was intentionally written as his most shallow personality trait, but Pina forgot about that and decided to take it seriously so the entire world just kind of conformed to Andres' dumbest desires. And the result was a mind numbing romantic plot (4 of them to be exact, but Andres' own was the worst of the lot). A long time ago, I think I said I doubted Berlin could sustain a show on his own but think he could if we surrounded him with a variety of interesting relationships (Jakov, Martin, Santiago, I mean lol).

The spinoff didn't do that either, instead surrounding him with strangers (to us) and keeping him as distant as possible from those strangers (not that I mind this element, but you have to admit it made it really hard to care for them all as a team especially when the audience was already so "hostile" towards the banda being replaced). Andres is just a male Tokyo LMAO, but the difference is that Tokyo was surrounded by people who were not her. Andres' new gang had the same loose priorities as himself, which didn't make for logical conflicts or sympathetic motivations.

And like you said, Sergio has strong motivation and the heists were complex. Here, the heists were "easy" and everyone is just doing the heist because. We don't even get Andres saying he's doing it because he wants to prove he can or anything. It was just an excuse to slide him and Pina's new blorbos into Paris so they could force us to watch hook-ups.

yes it makes sense that berlin and palermo are not together all the time, but they canonically worked together in heists before the gold planning and by andrés' words martín is his best friend, he just can't go without even mentioning him ever - this time he's the narrator. look, if rodrigo didn't want to participate i accept a version where he only appears in andrés' narration. i just don't want them to erase berlermo totally.

We don't know for sure Berlin will narrate a la Tokio (I sent that exact question for yesterday's event; got no answer) but it would make sense he would! It's a very LCdP trope and it would work very well with Berlin, I think.

But I agree; a complete retconning of such staples in his life such as Sergio or Martin would be really strange - if not cameos, then at least mentions. Still, I have to admit, until the last frame of the last episode of the spinoff ends, I'll still hold some grain of hope that we'll see (or even hear mentioned) Martin. I mean; come on.

Sure Pedro said he sees the character of Berlin as different between seasons 1-2 and seasons 3-5, but he was still the same character, with the same backstory! And Pina's mention of not wanting to say anything about who - if anyone - from the original show is coming back for fears of spoilers and fan expectations still makes me think it isn't so foolish to hope.

ugh, no, i can't even imagine keila being this tokio level important character in the narrative and having a sergio-tokio level relationship with andrés.. (plus it's romantic) like, we are talking about andrés lol who's relationships with women were pretty surface level - even in the copenhagen flashbacks tatiana was basically a background character and the show focused more on the bond between andrés rafael jakov and bogota.

I feel you anon. THIS is what I'm dreading most. Making Keila this important is going to be a closed road. Like for Andrés' lcdp characterization to make sense, Keila can't have a "postive" everlasting effect on him. So it's either she's just not important even though the show tells us she us or they will end up weakly villanizing her or something. I do hope Pina knows what he's doing though and I just can't see his vision at the moment.
