What's your opinion on religious influences in Dragon Ball?
There is a lot of Judeo-Christian imagery (white dove, Upa scaring Devilman with a cross, Goku as a Moses-type figure, etc.) I don't like it when Seventh-Day Adventist fearmongers like Little Light Studios call Goku a Lucifer-type figure.
Beerus and Heles look like Egyptian gods

Dragon Ball is a mix of different religions †☪︎✡☯☸ૐ⛩️🀀𓋹⚛
I'm not gonna talk about Journey to the West since everyone knows that Dragon Ball was influenced by that story.
Ki comes from Eastern religions. A comparison to make is the Jewish concept of ruach tamah, described by rabbis as similar to ki and as the source as Samson's power
Judeo-Christian imagery. Super Saiyan is similar to the glowing state of Stephen (my interpretation, I'm Christian btw). Goku is a "SON UNDER THE SUN". Goku is also a Moses-type figure, like Superman. A white dove also appears aside of Android 16. That's the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Upa also scares Devilman with a cross. Magic users (with the exception of Baba) are all evil. Baphomet-like demons are always the villains. Goku's values are also Judeo-Christian/Islamic. Dragon Ball has a god hierarchy like Marvel, but Zalama who is above all, just like the One Above All in Marvel, has a similarity to Yahweh of Judaism and Christianity or more like Aether of the Hypsistarian cult.
The Kais relate to the Buddhist Heavenly Kings and Hindu deities. Beerus and Heles take inspiration from Egyptian paganism.

Just some tweets that really hit me today.
Sometimes it's easy to forget *exactly* how influential a person and their work is. Would the works we all love even have existed without him?

Man, Dragon Ball is such an important part of my life to this day. It gave me the strength to make the best out of my childhood, to survive some of my worst teenage years and even now every time I feel down I go to put some Dragon Ball episode to cheer me up.
It gave me a closer relationship to my dad, 'cause we would spend entire summers marathoning it. My grandparents used to go on vacations and brought me pirated CDs and some cheap figures collections, keychains. My aunts and uncles still send me Dragon Ball memes. It's so weird and so funny, but I can't complain because it's harmless.
I sing Dragon Ball openings and endings when I need some distraction, while I do my chores, while I'm studying. I go into my sister's room to remind her of that time Picollo and Goku tried to learn to drive and it was a disaster. I was laughing so hard just by the memory.
Like me, I'm sure there are many other people in the world. Dragon Ball means a lot to many many generations. It influences so much not only anime and manga culture, but every corner of the world.
Akira Toriyama really gifted humanity with one of the most beloved hero stories out there. The silly type, yet emotional, full of action and friendship.
For that many will always be thankful.

one thing i've always understood as Akira Toriyama's influence on manga, even if just assumption on my part, was how his cartooning came to bear when he started writing pure action manga. when I think of his contemporaries I think of overblown special moves like Saint Seiya or the gory fist clusters of FotNS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to me it seemed what Toriyama brought to the table was the satisfaction of clarity in martial arts
when you read his fight scenes, which may have become notorious when animated for dragging on, there's no question about what's happening in the action
a clear kick to the jaw
Tumblr media
a clean line of action on Yajirobe's slice
Tumblr media
I first noticed this clarity pretty quickly early on in the General Tao fights during the red ribbon arc, where entire fight scenes playing out with these clear motions on the pages
Tumblr media
Even as it got more detailed later on, the clarity stayed
clear hits on clear fight scenes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and dirtier but still completely legible lines of action
Tumblr media
And when he started introducing the big over the top special moves we got the same thing quite often in DB: that simple visual clarity amplifying the excitement
Tumblr media
i'm not super coherent on it right now, i'm not the biggest shonen action fan all the time and maybe Toriyama didn't introduce the world to visually clear and interesting fights in manga.
but when I see any action manga showing off clean fight choreography or sick ass lazer beams that show off clear shockwaves of destruction, i'll always be thinking of the GOAT
Tumblr media
RIP Akira Toriyama

Finally feel like I can say something coherent, so here goes... I say this without a shred of exaggeration: Akira Toriyama was legitimately one of the most important creative figures of the last 50 years. His work, especially Dragon Ball, has influenced SO much even outside its own medium. Movies, TV, cartoons, comic books, video games, MUSIC... all of it. You can see his fingerprints in so many other works. Even now, artists and writers, voice actors and animators, musicians and game devs are all mourning him and reflecting on the impact he had on their own work. Titans of anime and manga are sharing in this pain. The craziest thing about this though? The humility he had in spite of it. He was always reluctant to be in the spotlight, preferred to keep his head down and just work, never really worried that much about public perception of himself. Part of what makes him such an icon, man. Losing him is losing a piece of our shared history. It's something that resonates deep in the hearts of everyone his work touched. This is just... such a loss. And I can't even begin to imagine what his family is going through right now. Praying for them all. Rest in Peace to a literal Legend, an absolute Icon, and a personal inspiration in more ways than I could ever express properly.
