43- If we get caught, I'm blaming you
-
Few things felt better than winning, as far as Kaoru was concerned.
But it wasn’t the roar of the crowd, the wave of cheers that washed over him after that quick, collective breath before the results flashed up on the screen, all the attention meant little to Kaoru. In fact, it was something he bore rather than welcomed, something that his anxiety often scratched at.
What made winning better than anything else was the quiet, calm sense of triumph in his own chest. It was knowing that he had won, he had succeeded. He had shown his worth at something that, at least here on the slopes of S, mattered.
Kaoru had never cared about proving himself to anyone but Kaoru. Not any more at least.
So as the playback rolled on the big screen, showing the end of his board clearly past the line nearly a whole length ahead, the crowds erupted around him with the realisation but Kaoru simply smiled behind his mask and nothing more.
“Looks like you won, babe,” Kojiro gently bumped him with a shoulder, face split into that smile of his that seemed almost too big for his face.
Odd, seeing as he’d just lost.
Kaoru tilted his head upwards to regard his boyfriend smugly, “Not like you to be so gracious in defeat. Despite how much practice you get.”
“Oof!” Kojiro gave a theatrical wince, holding his chest, “The claws on this kitten…god, I’m never going to recover from that one…”
Kaoru rolled his eyes, though the smile under his mask grew, “Well, clearly you can pursue acting instead of skating. Now may I have my prize, gorilla?”
Kojiro cocked an eyebrow at him.
“...my darling gorilla?”
Kaoru didn’t skate for whatever was on the line but when Kojiro had proposed a beef at S as they drove over, offering him some prize he wouldn’t yet reveal unless he won, he’d be lying if he said his interest wasn’t piqued. Maybe it was his boyfriend’s infuriating smile as he’d challenged him, knowing Kaoru couldn’t bear it when Kojiro knew something he didn’t. Maybe it was the fact that his forfeit for losing was only doing the dishes for the rest of the week, something Kaoru did the lion’s share of anyway.
Maybe it was simply that he loved skating with Kojiro and he always had.
Either way, now his victory had been assured, Kaoru was very interested in seeing what this had all been about. He wasn’t one for puzzles, he much preferred answers.
“Oh, yeah!” Kojiro slapped his forehead like he’d forgotten, hiking his jacket further up those immense arms of his to reach into a pocket, “Well, you did win fair and square after all.”
“I did…” Kaoru narrowed his eyes and turned back up to the screen, a loose thread suddenly occurring to him.
There had been a moment, right at the very end as they’d come down from the railings. Joe had actually been ahead of him at that point, he’d pulled off one of those freestyle moves that make Kaoru equally impressed and exasperated and maybe a little turned on. But he’d been staring at his friend’s back, mouth opening to ask Carla to calculate an angle that would let him overtake with a minimum radius.
But there it was, up on the screen. No one else would notice it, only someone who’d been skating with Kijiro since elementary school, since back before he was Joe, would see how he leaned back just so, shifting his weight against the forward momentum so he slowed. Just a fraction, but a fraction was all Cherry Blossom needed to slide past him and win.
“Ready for your prize?” Kojiro hummed from behind him.
“What…did you let me win?” Kaoru narrowed his eyes as he turned, “What kind of game are you…oh.”
The rest of the words died in his throat, along with even the slightest noise from the crowd, silence dropping around them like a heavy curtain falling. To Kaoru, the rest of the world may as well not have existed.
Because as soon as he turned, Kojiro sank to one knee and held out a ring. It was a simple, traditional mokume gane ring that Kaoru recognised in an instant, it was one of the ones he’d always admired in his favourite antique shop. And Kojiro was holding it out to him with an expression on his face like the years had fallen away, gentle and hopeful as he’d been when they were kids but none of the fear.
“So…what do you say?” he smiled that goddamn smile again, the one that had been softening all the hard edges in Kaoru for years.
Kaoru rarely found himself lost for words. It was a relief to only need one.
“Yes!” he managed to choke out, flying at Kojiro and nearly knocking him off balance with the force of his embrace, burying his face against his shoulder so no one would see the tears in his eyes.
The crowd went wilder than they had for any win, any bail, anything that had ever happened at S before. And Kaoru didn’t hear any of it. All he heard was Kojiro’s slightly teary eyed laughter and his soft murmur.
“I love ya, Kaoru…”
Bending the rules but he’d allow it.
“I love you too, Kojiro,” he whispered back.
Perhaps they should have been listening. It would have been less surprising when three teenagers and one flower shop assistant ploughed into them with a group hug as forceful as a semi truck.
Though, on reflection, they really should have been expecting that.
Kaoru felt a little guilty about keeping three minors after hours at S but at least it wasn’t a school night. He couldn’t think of a reason to say no, as they started gathering rocks and sticks for a bonfire that thankfully Langa knew how to light safely, as Joe pulled a cooler out of the back of the van, as Miya rigged up a small speaker to pipe tinny music into the night.
It was like the old days, back in the beginning, laughing and joking until dawn. Up here in the cliffs with the city spread out below them, a second sky with its own multicoloured neon stars, their little party could be the only people in the world. If Kaoru closed his eyes, he could have been eighteen again.
Except now Kojiro’s arm was around his shoulders. Now they had the kids- their kids, as Kaoru thought of them but would never say out loud- laughing in the uncomplicated, joyful way kids did. Now his heart felt so much lighter than it ever had back then.
So Kaoru would keep his eyes open and enjoy the moment he was in.
He was smiling at Reki clearly falling asleep with his head in Langa’s lap, while mumbling that he wasn’t tired at all, when he felt Kojiro nudge him. Understanding in an instant, Kaoru rose smoothly to his feet and brushed the dust off his hakamas.
“Kojiro and I are going to take a walk,” he announced, ignoring the wolf whistles and groans, “Carla, if any of the minors go anywhere near the alcohol, remind them of the symptoms of liver cirrhosis. At maximum volume. Repeatedly.”
Leaving groans and Carla’s cheerful agreement behind them, Kojiro and Kaoru picked one of the many winding paths through the shell of the old mine. It didn’t matter which, they knew them all.
“I can’t believe you let me win,” Kaoru murmured, sliding an arm through his fiancé’s.
Kojiro snorted, “Well, you sort of needed to for it all to work, man. And a certain diva mentioned to me once that he wanted a big, surprise proposal so…how’d I do?”
“You did wonderfully,” Kaoru pulled Kojiro down a few inches to kiss his cheek then flick him lightly, “And I’m not a diva. I simply would like one of the best days of my life to be appropriately showy.”
“Best day of your life, huh?” Kojiro’s smug smile softened a little at the edges.
“One of,” Kaoru corrected lightly, giving his arm a squeeze, “Presumably we’ll have an actual wedding day too.”
Kojiro grinned, “I’m thinking courthouse. I’ll actually iron a shirt, you’ll wear something ridiculously elaborate and honestly kind of gorgeous. Back to my restaurant, feed the kids, throw them out so we can make out in the back room?”
Kaoru laid his head gently on his shoulder, smiling against him, “Perfect.”
Their little impromptu engagement party had gone on so long, the sky was starting to lighten. Kaoru paused, leaning against the immense rock wall to watch the colours shift and run, purples into bright orange, bleeding like ink in water. Colours you’d think would never meet in the middle but there they were.
And while he watched the sky, Kojiro only had eyes for him.
“Think we’re far enough away?” he murmured, leaning in close, pressing Kaoru up against the wall.
He paused, biting his lip and listening. The music, the crackle of the fire, the raised voices of their friends were distant, indistinct enough.
“If we get caught, I’m blaming you,” he gave him a wicked smile.
Kojiro gave a bark of laughter, needing nothing but permission. Kaoru’s mask was long ago removed and tucked into his pocket, he had no need to wear it among friends, so Kojiro had free access to his mouth, giving him a searing kiss. Kaoru felt himself melt and allowed it, carefully lowering his walls, or at least making a Kojiro shaped hole in them.
Knowing they didn’t have long before they really would get comments, Kaoru moved things forward rapidly, hiking his leg up to Kojiro’s hip. Perfectly in sync as always, there was a hand there to catch it, a warm body to move into the space, a rapidly hardening cock pressing against him through the layers of fabric.
“There you are,” Kaoru smirked, grinding against that firmness pointedly.
He was rewarded with a low groan, one he could feel reverberate through his fiancé’s broad chest, “Cock tease.”
“Wouldn’t be teasing if you put it in, now, would it?” Koaru mouthed at his neck, fingers slipping down to start freeing himself, he knew Kojiro struggled getting into his traditional clothing sometimes.
“Already?” Kojiro snapped his own belts open easily, undoing his zipper.
“We don’t have long,” Kaoru groaned, eyes very firmly fixed on Kojiro’s erection, “And, well, a very grand, romantic gesture kind of gets a man ready to go…”
“I’ll bear that in mind,” Kojiro’s eyes were hungry behind the green curls that had fallen in front of them, dipping a hand down between Kaoru’s thighs, “Jeez, you weren’t kidding, babe…”
Unwilling to admit how much that made his nerves tremble, Kaoru just kissed him, nipping his lower lip shamelessly as his hand flashed out to take hold of his dick. Kojiro yelped against his mouth before answering in kind, shoving him back against the cliff. There would be red dust all over the back of his kimono but, for once, there were more important things to consider.
“Fuck me,” Kaoru gasped out, tightening both his grip and his voice into a command.
For once, Kojiro did as he was told. One hand gripped his thigh, the other went to his hair, drawn up there by some magnetism he’d had since they were young. Kaoru watched the dawn break over Kojiro’s shoulder as he felt that stretch, that vague sting quickly replaced by overwhelming relief and pleasure.
All he could do was cling to his shoulders and let the tide of it drag him back and forth, giving a soft cry at the peak of each thrust, fighting to keep the volume down. For someone who could abide neither noise or mess, Kojiro teased Kaoru mercilessly for creating a lot of both whenever they fucked.
“Mine,” Kojiro moaned, voice a rough growl, “You’re all mine, princess…”
“God,” Kaoru choked out, the cadence of his voice rising and falling with the rolling of Kojiro’s hips, his breathing ragged, “I’m not going to last if you keep talking to me like that.”
“Then don’t,” there was a smug flash in Kojiro’s eyes as he jerked his hips forcefully, dragging out the scream Kaoru had been trying to keep back.
He was lost, happily and gratefully lost. His peak washed over him with a sensation like the snapping of a drawn string, with a sound that tried to be Kojiro’s name but broke in the middle. Kojiro wasn’t far behind him, filling him with heat as his hips jerked, their rhythm dissolving into senseless rutting.
“God, Kaoru…” he whimpered, like all his strength had left him, all of it pooling somewhere in the bottom of his fiancé’s stomach.
They shifted until it was Kaoru holding up Kojiro, their breaths perfectly in time like they could be one aching, gasping sound. Kaoru let his skirts fall to offer himself some privacy, so he could focus on pressing soft kisses to his bare shoulder, following the dark lines of his tattoo.
As soon as he had enough breath back, Kojiro moved to catch his hand, pressing a kiss over the ring he’d put there.
“You going to tell everyone you won your husband in a skating competition?” he smiled playfully.
Kaoru laughed softly, tracing a finger down his spine before yanking his trousers back up to the ridiculous low position they occupied on his hips, “Well. Who wouldn’t brag about such a prize, hm?”
As they neatened themselves as best they could, it occurred to Kaoru that he used to hate coming back down the mountain. That solid surety of his own worth, that sense of pride in himself, it was always so much harder to find unless he was up here or he had a brush in his hand. But this time, going back down with Kojiro’s ring on his finger and his fingers threaded through his own, Kaoru was, for once, more excited for what was at the base of the mountain than what was on top of it.
Because few things were better than winning, as far as Kaoru was concerned. But he could think of some.
