ok stupid question but it's been a while since i've watched; in iasip did one of the characters transition? bc i keep seeing joyce kelly as a tag alongside charlie kelly posts but whenever i try to look up joyce kelly i don't get any concrete answers, is it the case of a very popular hc?

HI this isn’t a stupid question at all!! the short answer is: no, in canon, charlie kelly has not transitioned or started using a different name. however, the recent uptick in people depicting the character as transfem and using the name joyce isn’t… TOTALLY headcanon, either. there is a quasi-canonical basis for it.

basically, back in s13 (so like… 2018? i think?), there was an episode called “the gang solves the bathroom problem” that was about, among other things, the “problem” of which bathroom trans people should use in public. the episode kicks off with the revelation that charlie has secretly been using the women’s bathroom while dressed as a woman for YEARS, because his mom would dress him as a girl as a kid so that charlie could go in the women’s room with her. in the final, aired cut of the episode, charlie dispenses with the wig and dress pretty quickly, and that’s that.

HOWEVER, relatively recently, the script for that episode was made public online, and it contains a LOT of cut material that either wasn’t filmed at all, or was filmed and then cut before airing. in the script version of the episode, charlie shares that his “girlsona” is named joyce, and an exchange between charlie and dennis makes it much clearer that charlie considers himself to be transgender, at least within this particular episode.

now, it’s pretty obvious why that material was all cut from the episode before airing— but since that episode, there HAS been at least one canonical, onscreen instance of charlie saying that he “doesn’t really identify” in relation to gender (he trails off/gets interrupted).

it hasn’t happened in canon (and imo, it shouldn’t, and i think they were ultimately correct to cut the aformentioned stuff from that episode). but within the realm of the fanbase, i think it’s cool to see the idea get reclaimed and treated more seriously and with the proper level of nuance and consideration!! transmasc charlie headcanons have been INNUMERABLE for at least a decade now, and while i still love those hcs, there’s plenty of character gender headcanons to go around, and i think it’s really great to see people start to loosen up and consider the character through a different lens :)

She’s a huge Kacey Mussgraves fan. She also is into Troye Sivan. Arwen likes Dua Lipa cause she doesn’t have drama and embodies the sparkly aesthetic. She kinda likes Halsey as well.

Eowyn

She’s recently become a big Macklemore fan (wink wink). She also got really into LABOUR of course. Other than that she doesn’t listen to much that is super popular but she does like King Princess, Halsey, and Phoebe Bridgers and Brandi Carlisle.

Pleakley:

First off: yes, that's his canonical first name. It means "brave warrior" in his native language which is why he doesn't like/use it.

Also, I don't mean to invalidate anyone's interpretation of what the heck's going on with his gender. I usually hc Pleakley as some flavour of transfem these days but the form says *his* pussy so I'm using the canonical he/him pronouns.

Now, Pleakley is possibly the most queer coded character in all of Disney history. The exact flavour is unknown but oh man, that's not a cishet guy. He's always dressing up in traditionally feminine clothing, even calling himself "Aunt Pleakley", he has a Thing with Jumba (down to multiple references in the show to them sharing a (bunk) bed) and he's just unbelievably fruity. Since he's an alien we have no idea of his genital configuration but whatever kind of hole is down there is sure to get used ;)
