The Fourth Blade: Panabas - "For Chopping"
Four days to the launch of the white-hot lightning that is the Gubat Banwa Kickstarter! Gubat Banwa is a TTRPG supported by the twin pillars of tactical martial arts and contemplative war drama. Meditate upon love and violence as warriors of a burning world. Will you stem the tide of blades? Or is it rising by your will?
Tumblr media
I'll be posting the weapons I've drawn for the game as a countdown until the launch on October 10. This was supposed to be a Swordtember series, but we needed a little more time to gain momentum. 4/7 blades, past the halfway point, let us proceed with the PANABAS
Tumblr media
Towering amongst what blade collectors categorize as "Moro weaponry", the panabas is quite possibly the largest blade I've ever drawn. Like- I'm not lying, I drew all the blades in this series to scale relative to each other, and the panabas has by and large been the one determining how big my canvas needs to be. The edge is on the longer curve, the spine of the blade is thicker near the handle, and the handle is about as long as the blade (if not longer).
Tumblr media
(Photo from Kristian Josef Acedo)
The form belies the function; it isn't difficult to guess how this blade is used just by looking at it. The name- if I'm not mistaken- is an even bigger giveaway. Panabas supposedly comes from "pang-tabas" which literally means "for chopping". It also goes by the name of nawi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Photos from Raymundo Lucero) As large as its reputation might be, the choppers aren't always massive. Their utility ranges from agricultural to combative to ceremonial, and the size and shape usually matched the nature of the work.

Tumblr media
(Exhibit at Museum of the Filipino People- biggest one) The panabas is most often attributed to the peoples of Maguindanao, though the range of its use and the variants of its make span across large portions of the Mindanao area.
Tumblr media
(Antiques from the collection of Richard Hudson, size comparison with a kalis) A popular tale (especially amongst Filipino Martial Artists) states that the US Marines wore leather collars to protect their necks during the American Occupation in Mindanao, due to blades like these that gave the troops pause, and feel that the extra protection was necessary. Supposedly, this is where the term "leatherneck" came from. Although the veracity of this latter claim is a bit on par with the claim that the Colt .45 was invented specifically to stop the same Moro warriors, the story has already stuck.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
(Photo from The Metropolitan Museum of Art) We touched upon "Traditional" blades last time, referring to blades made by the same people to whose cultures those blades belong. This time we look at the other side of the coin. "Modern" is the term collectors here often use to refer to reinterpretations, usually by modern smiths who are separate from where a blade traditionally belongs. The point of reference I used for "Traditional" blades before is a katana forged by a traditional Japanese swordsmith. If- instead- a white blacksmith in America were to forge a katana using their own smithing methods, that would be considered as a "Modern" blade under this categorization. I'll leave it to you to spot the differences in these next few photos:

Tumblr media
Pair of panabas and a binuaya (leftmost) by Traditional Moro Blade, Maguindanaon (Maguindanao)
Say it with me this time! Blade culture is alive and still developing. Mindanao was never conquered by Spain- the fierce resistance of the Moros made sure of that- and again it shows in the blade cultures. Though the panabas is now popular enough to have modern reinterpretations made by smiths across the Philippines, the traditional panabas and the people who make them are still around.
Tumblr media

One of the Five Major Mahamandalas of Gubat Banwa pays homage to and gleans inspiration from living cultures like those I mentioned here. Yes- I repeated the text from the previous installment, because it's equally true, here. Additionally, the panabas shows up as the iconic weapon of the Martyr- one of the 25 Disciplines (read: "character classes") whose moon-bright martial techniques you could pick up in-game. Anyway, go check out the Kickstarter!
The Gubat Banwa Kickstarter launches in 4 days! Check it out here:
Not long now- this is a very small team of creators from the global south knocking on your doors asking for help to get the word out. I truly cannot understate how small this team is, and how amazing it is that they've come this far- we just need a little bit of a boost! With your help, this grand ambition can be realized. We would greatly appreciate any help rendered towards getting more eyes on this game!

how many ttrpgs do you know of that came with soundtracks?
THEME: TTRPGs With Soundtracks
Hello friend! I knew of a few off the top of my head, and went searching for some more. Many of these soundtracks are playlists of already-created songs, hosted on streaming apps like Spotify, but a few are designed specifically for a certain roleplaying game. Either way I hope you find something up your alley!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monster Care Squad, by Sandy Pug Games and The Fox in the Flowers.
Long after the crowns have fallen, long after greed has had it's day, long after war, poverty, hunger, and tyranny passed into memory, Ald-Amura's peace is broken by The False Gold, a terrible sickness spreading through its greatest guardians and most beautiful Monsters.
Unified by community and driven by a love for the planet and each other, The Monster Care Squad rises. Do you heed their call?
A game about caring for monsters in a fantastical world is already probably enough to sell a lot of folks on the pitch, but the love for this game shines through in the third-party work available, including Sounds of Ald-Amura, by The Fox in The Flowers. Sandy Pug Games is a creative collective that prioritizes support for the entire team behind any given project, which is probably why their games are so beautiful and so well-crafted.
Long Haul 1983, by SPC. (Spotify Soundtrack)
It’s 1983, and the world feels hollowed out.
LONG HAUL 1983 tells the story of a dangerous journey through an empty world.
You play a long-haul truck driver trying to make their way home. Every day, you’ll hit the road, navigating treacherous highways, fleeing from menacing threats, and dealing with the psychological impacts of isolation.
And at the end of each day, you’ll find a payphone, make a call, and leave a message for the most important person in your life.
They never pick up. You never stop calling.
This is a solo game, where the soundtrack is designed to enhance the experience of loneliness and isolation, using ambient sounds and hits from the time period this game is set in. The game comes with a list of songs meant to be played during certain moments, as well as a list of songs that are designed to be background atmospheric pieces. If you want something that elevates your solo journaling experience, this game might be for you.
Orbital Blues, by Soul Muppet Games. (Soundtrack)
It is an intergalactic age of cowboys, outlaws and bandits playing on an interstellar stage. It is a time of hyper-capitalism and a cut-throat gig economy. Unreliable trash-heaps carry scrappy underdogs to their next gig, and corporation freighters lumber across the horizon laden with an empire’s bounty.
These are the music-fuelled, moon-age daydreams of a rebel space age.
These are your ORBITAL BLUES.
Games inspired by tv shows and movies have a great starting point in finding music that really fits the tone - you can start with the soundtrack of the things that inspired you. But Chris Bissette was not happy to simply show you the soundtracks for Cowboy Bebop and Firefly and call it a day. They created a custom album to play alongside the game that’s a little soulful, and a little rock n’ roll. A soulful space-western kind of game lends itself really well to music to evoke melancholy and loss, so I definitely recommend listening to some of this if you want to play Orbital Blues or any other game inspired by the same sorts of media.
The Wildsea, by Felix Isaacs, and Songs of the Lignin Tide, by Liam Peregrine Vaughan.
Your character is a wildsailor, part of a crew cutting their way across the island-studded wilderness of the treetop sea on a vessel of your very own. You’ll clash with survivor cultures and wild beasts, scavenge and salvage for wreckage and trade-goods, chase rumours, and uncover secrets. The focus of this game is on exploration, progress, and change - you’ll define the world of the Wildsea as you sail it.
I’ve talked about The Wildsea extensively in the past, so I’m just going to talk a little bit about Songs of the Lignin Tide. The Wildsea community is dedicated, inspired, and creative, and that leads to some amazing work created by players, for other players. Songs of the Lignin Tide is one of those examples. It uses a wealth of different sounds to add richness and texture to this unique and verdant setting, and it feels like the creator drew heavily from their own experiences of playing the game. I highly recommend you check it out if you want more Wildsea in your life.
Quietus, by Sinister Beard Games. (Spotify Playlist)
QUIETUS is a one shot, prep-less RPG of melancholy horror. It’s a game for a GM and one or two players, and emulates tragic horror movies like Oculus, The Strangers, The Babadook, Inside and the Netflix version of The Haunting of Hill House. If a piece of fiction can make you cry and scream, then it’s a great model for the sort of stories that you can tell with QUIETUS.
The music for Quietus is also a Spotify playlist, with a collection of songs that fit the tone of a tragic horror game. It’s an hour and forty-three minutes long, and since Quietus is meant to be a one-shot, I have a feeling you might have to play through it more than once, or let Spotify generate similar songs after the playlist finishes up.
GoblinMixtape’s Soundtracks, by Sam Leigh.
While creating a soundtrack on your own might be a daunting task, using established songs to fit the vibe of your ttrpg is much easier, and GoblinMixtape (aka Sam Leigh) has connected many designers to playlists designed to emulate the feeling of their games. There’s quite a few playlists already created by them, so I’d recommend checking out this list of playlists if you want to see the games she’s worked on before.

Here's your chance to speak on AI to US copyright office
This is a rare opportunity to get your voice heard about the current AI copyright concerns!
The U.S. copyright office is seeking the public's opinion on the current issue of AI and copyright. We have almost 1000 people in here. If every one of you fills out this very simple and quick form, that is not a small amount of people, and have a good chance of actually affecting change!
You can also read more about the issues surrounding AI generation here, if you want to be more informed before you fill out the form:
TLDR: The crucial question appears to be whether the “work” is basically one of human authorship, with the computer merely being an assisting instrument, or whether the traditional elements of authorship in the work (literary, artistic, or musical expression or elements of selection, arrangement, etc.) were actually conceived and executed not by man but by a machine.

yo if we're mutuals and you need or want a bluesky key, let me know. I have 4 available on my personal (and if you're a ttrpg creator in the Rising Tide community, 5 more I can distributr to community members).
Bluesky got a bad rep early on from the usual ToS freakout folks. It's a perfectly fine social media site just like tumblr or twitter, and functionality-wise is a twitter clone without a timeline algorithm. You basically create or find feeds to follow to find new people or organize stuff you want to see. It's been increasing in popularity with ttrpg folks, artists, and speedrunners, and when it eventually goes live I expect it to be the successor to Twitter.
As a note currently it also is allowing nsfw content (it has a function to hide sensitive images until you click to show while 18+). I am not going to guarantee that stays post launch when advertising and/or venture capital likely joins the mix. But right now it IS promising and is one reason artists are flocking to it.

Coming soon to Kickstarter, Cthulhu Dreamt is a multimedia sci-fi tabletop RPG that explores a near-future Earth, where Cthulhu has awakened and begun exerting his otherworldly influence on the planet. TTRPG Industry Corner: Substack, “ceding space”, and POSSE
The observant among you will have noticed that this is not available on Substack. If you’ve been following the discourse over there then you know why. If not, FYI: the owners of the platform have publicly announced that they’re just fine letting nazis use their platform as a promotional space for nazi ideology.
Substack say they believe that the best way to defeat nazis is to engage them in public debate. Which leads the cynic in me to conclude that they must never once have tried debating a committed nazi online, and then leads the even BIGGER cynic nestled inside the first one to observe that a series of endless, heated debates between nazis and not-nazis has never done a platform any harm. Quite the opposite. Engagement is engagement, content is content. Those things combined are money.
Look, you do you. If you want to hang out online and debate nazis then have at it. Just bear in mind that they’re not nazis because no one ever told them that their ideas are monstrous and wrong. In fact they definitely hear that a lot. They often have pre-prepared answers for everything you want to say. They’ve had this argument more often than you have. It’s not that there’s nothing to be done about nazis, but debating them on the internet ain’t it.
So I moved. I know a lot of my lefty peers in the indie TTRPG scene are holding their nose and sticking with it. I get that. We’re all tired of decamping every time the shitlord who owns our current outlet of barely-any-choice decides to make his shitlord-ness everyone else’s problem. No platform is perfect, and besides: I’m not a full time designer, I have a day job which gives me means to pay for Buttondown (the only newsletter provider so far who’ve said they will kick nazis out if they find them), and my audience is small enough to be easily and inexpensively portable. The whole calculation is different for me than for others.
However, I do disagree with several arguments I’ve seen (and heard repeated IRL) about “ceding space”. Because internet platforms don’t have a finite amount of space. So you, a not-nazi, being present on one absolutely doesn’t mean fewer nazis will be. It might look like there are fewer because they aren’t the only thing on the timeline, but that’s all. Meanwhile the content you add draws an audience to the platform, growing the user base via network effects, making said platform more influential and successful. More essential. And a rising tide lifts all ships, as we often say.
I take heart from the valuable lessons floating about in the wake of multiple major platform death spirals. People are talking a lot more about owning their own audience, not being reliant on privately owned spaces. Newsletter lists are a great way to do that. I’ve also been made aware of a principle called POSSE: Post Own Site, Share Everywhere. Cory Doctorow talks about it convincingly, and if it works for him…
So with that in mind I’ve greatly expanded where you’ll be able to access these posts. My own site, your inbox, Medium, Tumblr. I even got an RSS feed up and running. If one goes down (or becomes a nazi bar) then I’ll look out for another to replace it. It’s more work that way, but hopefully it’ll pay off in terms of a greater sense of stability.

#HorrorRPGs2016 The End of the World: Alien Invasion
Fantasy Flight has a well-deserved reputation for slick products and smart packaging. Edge of the Empire and Warhammer FRP 3e illustrated how they were able to elevate rpgs into a hybrid project. We’ve seen the legacy of that with later games which take a new approach to form factors: Zombie World, Gloomhaven.
The End of the World series was another unusual direction, though a more conventional rpg than other recent FFG releases. Some of that may come from TEotW's origin as a Spanish language rpg series, El Fin Del Mundo from 2013.
Each volume of The End of the World offers a complete game with a complete apocalypse. I debated about putting these just on the post-apocalyptic lists, but the use of classic horror tropes slots them here as well. All share a simple basic system: six stats in three categories rated from one to five. Features expand the details (i.e. flaws/assets). Players roll a pool of positive and negative d6s. Matching negatives cancel out positives and every remaining die under the relevant stat counts as a success. Those rules take up 40 pages of a 144 page book.
Each volume then each offers a set of sketchy scenarios, each with a slightly different twist on the events. In some cases they're given clear bridges between, but in others the elements feel like they exclude one another. If you're expecting a toolbox for developing the themes, you might be disappointed. As well if you buy multiple volumes, you're repeating much of the basic material (about 33%).
The End of the World has one big hook: you play yourselves. Scenarios have flexible starting locations so you can tailor events to your own hometown or city. There's even a mechanic for painfully deciding your own stats. That works with TEotW’s fairly simple system, both easy to pick up and get running. But a large part of your enjoyment will rely on how much you like playing yourself getting murderized. I burned out on that long ago. If you remove that element, then you're left with a fairly standard set of light rules with a bog standard Armageddon.
One of the two 2016 releases, Alien Invasion, is a surprisingly rare one in post-apocalyptic ttrpgs– despite it being a strong sci-fi trope. The one I can think of off the top of my head is Necessary Evil, Systems Failure (as of this writing available on the Bundle of Holding), and The Mechanoid Invasion. It includes five different alien invasions, with details on how they played out. Each is followed by a scenario frame for how you can integrate the players into the story. This allows you a choice of playing out during the invasion or in the aftermath.
The five scenarios are: War Between Worlds, which offers a classic martian invasion. Part of the hook here is that the opponents look like greys or other classic depictions of aliens. Brotherhood of Babylon has a group of aliens who shaped humanity’s evolution and have now return to take control of the world. It’s a little like if the Stargate builders came to take back what was theirs. This one has reptiloids, which I’m not fond of given its association with conspiracy theories. There’s also a little bit of the Chariot of Gods implied racism buried in there as well.
Rising Tides offers an alien people who come not from space, but from the depths of the ocean. Atlantis invades using their superior technology. Skitter has an alien invasion closer to classic monster movies, a swarm of giant interstellar ants which lands on Earth to harvest our resources. You could probably borrow some elements from War Against the Chtorr for this. Finally Visages is, as you might guess, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with plant-like replicants taking over.

When you choose this Sorcerous Origin, you not only become one with the waves—and the magic within them—you also become an incredible asset to any ship traversing the seas.

Hello friend, I don’t think I know of anything that’s explicitly about the Great Chain of Being, although I think I have a few ideas for games that might flirt with either a Christian hierarchy or the concept of ascension. Nothing here's an exact match, but maybe there's still something that catches your interest?
If you are a follower of this blog and you know of a game for this, please add it in the comments or reblogs!

Hellwhalers, by Brewist Tabletop.
HELLWHALERS is an original TTRPG of both nautical and Christian-religious horror. Play as damned whalers, sailing hell's oceans to hunt a monstrous leviathan whale in a bid for redemption of your immortal souls.
Whalers will earn souls through roleplay, challenges, and gambling, eventually collecting enough to pulse the Hellwhale's disembodied heart, a blackened, grisly organ kept locked away by the captain. To pulse the heart is to summon the monster you seek: the dreaded Hellwhale. Slaying this titan of Hell's waters is said to earn you a place back in God's graces.
Gambling plays a central role in the gameplay loop, creating a procedurally generated series of events each day. Gambling takes place on a Sic-Bo board, a game played with three six-sided dice.
This is a game of ascension to some extent, in that you are fighting to ascend from Hell. You choose from six base playbooks, and you’ll have to track your resources to make sure you have enough to keep you hale while out at sea.
Trash Mob, by mothermultiverse. After an untimely death, you reincarnated as something weak and potentially hated- but you don't have to stay that way! In a video game like world, your skills can grow simply by use, and while initial survival in the world may be harsh and difficult, it is only a prelude to a grand adventure that only you (and potentially your friends) can manage!
Trash Mob! was made to be Solo RPG ready, but also allow for some epic, GMless team up action or classic Narrated play. In the basic edition of Trash Mob, there are 16 playable Mobs, 4 basic zone setups, a series of charts to help you explore the world, and over 50 different skills you can gain as your monster grinds in their quest to survive, thrive, overcome the odds, regain some measure of their humanity, and become an overpowered anime protagonist that can shape the world with their actions!
While Trash Mob may not look like it from the cover, this entire game is about becoming a more and more powerful monster! You start as something weak and small, like a zombie or a chicken, but as you make your way through this magical world, you’ll find yourself levelling up, all the way until you become the most powerful thing in the dungeon!
And You Shall Shatter Temples, by Anna Landin.
Sing songs with the words they could not take from you. Raise the banner woven from the flags you stole back from them. Arm yourself with the swords you forged from their discarded bones.
And You Shall Shatter Temples is a game about rising up against an overwhelming power that is trying to crush you. All you have is what you carry with you, and those who rise up by your side. Together, you can turn the tide. Together, you can dethrone a god.
This game is more about fighting a god than anything else, but I think the very act could be part of the whole process of climbing the ranks. You don’t dethroned God all at once; you have to claim symbols of their power before you can topple them completely.
