So... this isn't the first time I've seen people being incredibly mean to a whole section of the phandom. It's the first time in a while I've seen a post this bad in the main "danny phantom" tag, though. I have Thoughts™ that have been stewing for a while. Thoughts™ that shouldn't be put in the tags of someone else's post.

I'm not going to link anything. These are just my thoughts, raised to the forefront by recent posts in the main tag.

TLDR: I have two main Thoughts™:

No matter what you ship, I welcome you to this phandom. The folks who openly despise real people for shipping fictional things do not represent all of phandom. Y'all deserve better than being called shitty names. Your ships do not make you a bad person, and I personally welcome you.

To y'all who keep trying to draw a line in the sand to define who is "degenerate" or whose work is "degenerate": the moment you draw that line, you create a way for others to shove people behind that line. And the folks who usually get shoved behind that line and called "degenerate" are lgbtqia+ folks, and (c)sa survivors. It's happened before on LiveJournal and FFN, and it's happening now, irl, with book bannings across the USA (and especially in Florida). The only way to protect lgbtqia+ folks and (c)sa survivors from this abuse is to not draw a line in the sand at all. Don't call folks "degenerate" for any reason, unless you're ready to have that finger pointed back at you by a larger and more negative movement.

If you desire fuller context, it's below the cut.

First: no matter what you ship, I welcome you to this phandom.

The views of hatred and disgust that pop up in this phandom don't represent all of phandom. No fandom is perfect, and we'll always see some form of the "logic of disgust" from some folks in any fandom. But no matter what you ship, and whether or not I personally ship it, I welcome you. You will find no disgust from me as I am now.

If you dig backwards into my blog, you might find some anti sentiment. My introduction to fandom was first FFN, and then tumblr, back when I was more of a black-and-white thinker. I'm pretty sure I experienced some form of shock when I really started digging in to the Wild West that is fandom. I don't know if I ever expressed this shock online. But none of you deserve to be called "degenerates" over liking whatever fictional content you like. Y'all are a part of phandom, too, and any attempts to erase you or deride you are wrong.

We shouldn't be drawing lines in the sand and throwing people behind those lines. That's dangerous.

Second: to y'all who keep drawing lines in the sand, please consider the broader context around you.

The moment you draw a line in the sand to delineate between you and your group of people, and "them" and their group of "degenerates", people find ways to shove other folks, including you and your folks, behind that line. Historically, both in fandom and outside of fandom, the folks who get shoved ALWAYS include lgbtqia+ folks, and (c)sa survivors. We saw this with the purging of LiveJournal. We saw this with the multiple purges of FanFiction.Net. We haven't seen this with ao3, as far as I know; but their stance seems to be very anti-censorship for fandom-historical reasons.

Outside of fandom, we are seeing this now. I'm doing my senior capstone project on book bans. According to PEN America's data, over the past school year alone, 154 counties in 34 states have banned 1557 books 3362 times overall. Over 40% of those bans come from Florida counties. And much of the "reasoning" behind these bans is the same logic of disgust that fandom applies to "problematic ships": They call it pornographic and pedophilia. They call it harmful and age-inappropriate. They largely target books about lgbtqia+ people and people of color. And this year, they've also targeted "books on physical abuse, health and well-being, and themes of grief and death" - expanding their censorship to "protect the children".

Censorship doesn't protect anyone. Instead, it prevents people from holding genuine conversations with real people about the censored material.

And if you're not ready to have that conversation, that's fine! You do you! But don't create an environment where other people can't have that conversation. That only breeds the sort of black-and-white thinking that leads to 1406 book bannings in the state of Florida.

This is just speculation on my part: but I reckon every single person who supports those bans would love to ban the same content you want censored. And they'd call for you and the content you love to be lumped in with them.

We all deserve better than that. So please stop drawing lines in the sand.

Do you perhaps have any resources on a harm reduction approach to disordered eating? it's been tough to find specific of this online and conventional websites only offer "talk to your loved one about what they feel" or either going to the GP. Certainly haven't found resources to help when you are not someone's parent/teacher/etc

the search function on this website is abysmal so i can't find the post but @transmutationisms wrote a very detailed summary of harm reduction tactics for disordered eating!

@librarycards has an entry in the psychiatric survivor zine called "Refuse!" which touches on the themes, as well as going into how to reduce your own fatphobia while still engaging in ED behaviors

Saving Our Own Lives has some chapters on it but i don't find them to be super comprehensive, quite honestly

there is some useful info in this Filter Mag article, as well as some background on why harm reduction is pushed back against in the ED field

Gloria Lucas' nonprofit Nalgona Positivity Pride has this as one of their focuses

while i wouldn't necessarily suggest seeking them out (at least evaluate what is/isn't going to be detrimental for you), the first place i ever encountered harm reduction for anything was in "pro" spaces (don't really want to type it out + get this post flagged). i wouldn't trust any information about nutrition you see in those spaces, but there are often threads about safer purging, specific scenarios, signs of common health effects + how ppl make them more manageable, etc. unfortunately, barring individual blogs on tumblr, these are the only places i can think of that you would be able to ask extremely specific questions + get a serious, non-condescending reply in a timely manner without being banned or reported (you are welcome to ask me specific questions + i can answer based on my personal experiences)

It's not a war, its genocide flat out GENOCIDE. The people of Palestine have done nothing wrong, simply because the people of Israel believe they are the "Chosen people" or the fact that they want the Palestinian land and thus came to the stupid conclusion that Palestinians are unworthy of life or should be purged simply for existing. They are fucking monsters, every single one of them and are hiding behind lies, money, and religion to keep things going their way. You probably think I'm racist for saying that Israel is a terrorist state or that it's all evil, well let me tell you this.

They don't care that 40% or more of Palestinians slaughtered are children.

They don't care that the survivors are starving to death.

They don't care that most they have slaughtered couldn't even fight back.

They are actively trying to sell stolen Palestinian land to get U.S. civilians to promote them as the good guys.

They are actively spreading online propaganda that the Palestinians are "getting what they deserve".

The are also spreading TikTok propaganda to show the IDF as true heroes just like how the U.S. uses TikTok to promote the military as "totally awesome" and not lame or psychologically damaging at all.

And they want everyone to feel bad about badgering them for causing the genocide in the first place. THEY WAN'T YOU TO FEEL BAD ABOUT GETTING MAD AT THEM FOR COMMITTING GENOCIDE! HOW MUCH MORE FUCKING PETTY CAN THEY GET?

Everyone hated the German Nazi's under Hitler and like to talk about how much of a stupid shit he was. Yet when modern Nazi's like white Neo Nazi inbred fucks or petty ass Isralian Nazi shits show up suddenly the Western media and almost everyone in the world just wants to turn their heads and focus on other stuff. Worst off some are even willing to say Israel are the victims or really their geocide is justified, its absolute bullshit. They there are people like you that clearly don't understand the situation.

Your right I'm not a political Tumblr blogger I just like to reblog that stuff so everyone can stop ignoring the blatant genocide that is happening. Barely anyone focuses on them anyways, but I still do it, why? Because I can't stop, no I won't stop. I'll never stop until this conflict is over and Israel pays for what it's done. Even if that never happens, I'll never let them forget or let their children forget the monsters they were.

I know I'm barely making a difference in the end, but I don't care. Until it's over I'll keep saying it, Israel is a Terrorist State.

WIP Wednesday

I'm going a little insane. Maybe more than a little. This story, like Kinetic was two years ago, is my sanity right now. I was going to share some of the smut I wrote a short time ago, but I hope you don't hate me if I hold off on that for a bit; there's so little of it in this story, I don't want to give away too much.

Then again, not many people will read this, as I'm pretty sure most of my regular readers are not on Tumblr, but that's okay. They'll get it eventually. I've estimated that there are about 7 chapters left, but you know as well as I how easy that could change. But the end is in sight!

(BTW, this story is about 200 words away from becoming my longest Damerey story to date!)

Whenever Poe was done with whatever task he had been busy with, he would find his way to the little cave on the far side of the lake, clean up as best he could, then wrap himself around an already sleeping Rey, as it was inevitably the middle of the night when his work was done for the day. She would wake early and regretfully slide out of their bed (which eventually became a cot rather than a makeshift pallet on the floor), leaving him to sleep as long as he could. Other than a few shared meals of their own, they rarely saw each other while they were both awake.

It was disappointing, but Rey admitted to Leia that at least knowing the other would eventually come ‘home’ was a comforting feeling.

Despite their rough start, Rey eventually learned to enjoy being with Luke, and she learned to appreciate his dry sense of humor. He spoke to her about the history of the Jedi, things he had learned in the years following the war with the Empire, and stories he had gathered from other survivors. He talked about the Bokken Jedi, Force sensitives that had been trained after the destruction of the Jedi order by survivors of the purge. Unfortunately, most of those survivors had been padawans, whose training had been incomplete, making their own training inadequate.

“Including yours?” Rey had asked.

“Especially mine,” he had told her. “I only learned the basics from Obi-wan and Yoda. But at least I had two Masters training me. And there’s my heritage, of course, which is either something to take pride in or something to try and rise above, depending on your point of view.”

I do hope that tumblr won’t remain on this path, or it could be the sign of the end of this site at long last. And just when we thought maybe they were beginning to actually turn things around.

I’m so, so disappointed especially with how tumblr has been treating survivors discussing their experiences and also for how it’s treating many queer people. In the past, many of the reported accounts were driven by Christian fundamental groups who want to purge all queer and “ungodly” content, and anyone claiming to be progressive who aligns with those kinds of people…. You really should look at the mirror and think hard about what you’re doing.

it's my nsfw tag for posts likely to get flagged by tumblr. In 2018/19 when the porn purge happened, posts tagged as nsfw no matter what, would get auto flagged so people had to make unique tags for nsfw or very lewd posts. Purge survivor is my own and it has stuck since.

Alright, it's time to finally compile my thoughts about how the premise of Tron Identity fits, or rather, doesn't seem to fit, together with Legacy, and my thus far failed attempts to make them fit. Long post with spoilers ahead.

First of all, I would like to state that I'm not opposed to the retcon that Quorra isn't in fact the last surviving ISO. I like to compare it to Superman: Depending on which continuity you're reading, Kal-El is either the only survivor of Krypton's destruction, The Last Kryptonian, or he's one of several survivors, including Supergirl, Krypto, Zod, the whole bottle city of Kandor, etc. Both of these premises are compelling to me: There's certainly a poetic tragedy of being the absolute last survivor of a calamity that wiped out your people, but I think that many people can also relate to the concept of a small group of survivors of a catastrophe trying to preserve and perhaps re-establish their culture. Similarly, Quorra being The Last ISO is interesting, but I see plenty of story potential in her being one of several survivors, perhaps trying to find and rescue her kin trapped in the Arq Server. And from what I can recall from watching Legacy recently, I think that they technically never outright say that Quorra is the last of her kind, though it is of course very heavily implied.

EDIT: Okay, Kevin does specifically call Quorra "the last ISO". Nevermind, then.

With that said, I think the main problem with the idea that Kevin Flynn created a backup server to which he migrated a bunch of ISOs can be summarized thus: Why the hell didn't he tell Sam? I guess the question could also be "why didn't he tell Quorra?", but I honestly have a difficulty seeing a scenario where Quorra isn't aware of the Arq Server in some way. I think that one of the very first things Kevin would tell Quorra when they meet after the Purge would be that he's saved other ISOs, I just can't imagine why he would keep her thinking that she's the last survivor. And even if he didn't tell her for some reason, I still think she would have suspiscions, since I imagine that most of the ISOs remaining on the Grid would notice if Kevin suddenly sneaked away some of them without telling anyone.

I have tried to figure out some explanations for why Kevin never told Sam about the Arq Server, and I have seen some possible explanations by other Tron fans, but none of them seem to hold up perfectly, for reasons I will explain below:

Kevin did tell Sam, we just never saw it in the movie: Okay, I guess there could be some moment when they're talking, like on the Sailer, and Flynn says "Oh, by the way..." I would probably have to do a rewatch of Legacy, but I suppose it could be possible that Sam isn't motivated by "I have to save Quorra, she's the last of her kind" and instead by "I have to save Quorra, so she can reunite with her fellow ISOs". The big problem with this idea is that once Sam got out, I have to imagine that his top priority would be to check on the Arq Server as soon as possible. Even if Sam procrastinated for whatever reason ("I have to start building a themepark ride!"), I imagine that Quorra would be on his ass about it every waking moment, for obvious reasons. But as I understand it, the premise of Identity is that the Arq Server hasn't been visited by anyone from the outside since the end of Legacy. It's been running by itself since 1989 up to our current present day year of 2023, perhaps even longer, and that's why it's in danger of running out of power. I don't think that works if Sam is aware of it.

Kevin thought the Arq Server had stopped functioning/was destroyed/was stolen: This was a scenario I saw someone else here on Tumblr suggest, and it's certainly a tantalizing idea. The idea of some as yet unknown third party carrying around a copy of the Arq Grid in their pocket is particularly fascinating, but I would assume that Kevin would tell Sam about it in that case: "When we get out, we have to find the person who stole the backup." Kevin believing that the server was destroyed or nonfunctional in some way is probably the scenario I have the least problems with, though I imagine that in that case he would at least have told Sam "I tried to make a backup, but..." I think it's especially interesting to imagine a conspiracy where someone inside the Arq Server somehow managed to "hack" it to fool Kevin into thinking it was shut down, perhaps some unscrupulous ISO who wanted to rule it for themselves?

Kevin forgot: And I don't mean "Oops, it just slipped my mind", I mean that something happened to his memory that erased his knowledge of the Arq Server. I had actually started sketching out a piece of fanfiction in which Kevin at some point before Legacy is temporarily captured by Clu (though later escaping, of course), and during his capture Clu manages to access this particular memory from Kevin's identity disc, and erases it for evil reasons. I liked the idea that Clu would know about the Arq Sever and was plotting to visit it once he got out, while Kevin was no longer aware of it, only regaining the memory when he reintegrates with Clu, and being unable to tell Sam before he disappears. However, I couldn't fit this together with the timeline of when Kevin meets Quorra (as I understand it, according to Tron Evolution that happened very shortly after the betrayal and purge). For the reasons stated above, Quorra would have to be aware of the Arq Server, and if Kevin got his memory erased after meeting Quorra, I have a hard time believing that she wouldn't mention it to him at some point after he escaped from Clu.

So there you have it. I really wish I could fit together Identity and Legacy in some way, since I really do like the game and all the concepts it introduces. It's possible I have missed or misunderstood something in my thoughts described above, and I'd be more than happy if someone points it out. It's also possible that the creators of Identity will come with some explanation in the promised sequels, that this whole thing is an intentional larger mystery that will eventually be revealed.

ANOTHER 1000 POSTS

211K and counting! Thank you to all 2,679 of you guys(plus everyone in my activity chart area…) for following, enjoying, and tolerating LiveLoveWRITE for all of these years (as of 5 January 2022, it’s been 12 years since I joined Tumblr! Wow!) down various fandom rabbit holes, through The Great Tumblr Purge of December 2018 (which didn’t work properly to nobody’s surprise. JUST DELETE THE PORN BOTS, PEDOPHILES, AND THE NAZIS, YOU IMBECILES! PROBLEM SOLVED FOREVER.), through the latest change of owners/dubious U.I. changes (I give it 6 months to a year before they give up on their “investment” and leave with their tail tucked between their legs…) and my ongoing evolution into a pale blog with a heavy focus on cottagecore and its various branches nowadays.

I would also like to give a very special shout-out to The Walking Dead/Richonne/Carnid folks who have welcomed me with open arms into their post apocalyptic world (what’s left of it after all the absolutely EXCELLENT writing…), the GOTHAMITES who have welcomed me as a lifelong citizen (the show may be over now but Gotham will always be my home!), and as always, mad love to all of the Gladiators who still follow me despite the show (mercifully!) being over and those who keep enjoying my mashups on here and my ongoing efforts at clever (usually not, but it’s funny 9 times out of 10…) live and before/after the show commentary on Twitter for both old and new fandoms. The acceptance from everyone makes things infinitely more fun around here! Here’s my favorite owls and some other appropriate pics and here’s to at least a thousand more!

If you think even for a SECOND that censorship of AO3 won’t include openly queer spaces, you’re so fucking wrong it hurts.

Does nobody remember the Purges of the early-to-late 2000’s? Does nobody remember the FanFiction.net Purge? The Tumblr Porn Ban? Fanfic history is about to repeat itself if we don’t step up to try and stop it.

Censorship of any kind will not end with just the issue that it claims to fix. It will encompass everything in the name of “dear heavens, won’t someone please think of the children!”

That’s not to say I don’t think removing any content is bad - there are circumstances that allow for content removal simply because it’s too gross or too disturbing for the general public’s eye. But you need to understand that they will not stop once it’s gone.

There are already ways to report the nasty shit and get it taken off the site. There are already ways you can avoid it if you feel very strongly about it or if it’s a triggering subject. As an sa and sh survivor myself there are certain topics that I always have filtered just for my own mental health. And guess what? It works. I’ve never come across something poorly tagged that triggers relapses. AO3’s tagging system works.

It won’t just be the problematic elements such as cp or graphic guro. It will spread to queer fic, stories of trans discovery, even of someone just living their life in a fur suit because they find enjoyment out of it! Your niches will not be safe! Nobody will be!

Maybe I’m just jaded and upset because I was old enough to remember - and experience - the bans. I remember how devastating it was to self-expressive works of art, to people just writing smut because they want to.

Do you honestly want the site you love to be so censored the fucking CCP looks like a paradigm of freedom of expression? Do you honestly not care that hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of people’s work, majorly non-problematic, will be affected?

If you’re about to bemoan the fact that this sounds super melodramatic and that I’m ‘overreacting’, then fine. Good for you. But the issue can not be overstated. We are heading in a truly dark direction of fandom history that unfortunately holds echoes of what we’ve gone through before. And the fact that some are defending TG’s desires? Even knowing she’s a bad faith actor who doesn’t give a shit about fandom culture? Makes me want to throw up.

Anybody about to accuse me of being a pedophile just because I don’t support breaking something that’s already designed - and proven - to work for those who want to use it is very welcome to just block me. I am not a pedophile for wanting a (legally sound) smut-safe space. I’ve seen y’all throwing that around like a frisbee at a picnic, and let me just say as an actual abuse survivor I think you’re full of shit and you need to get off the internet.

Do the right thing. Do what you can to stop Tiffany G from being elected.

People who don’t see the fascist elements in AoT aren’t stupid, you guys just can’t recognize effective propaganda

Aight, so one of my guilty pleasures for the past few months has been to watch reaction and analysis videos about AoT, by people who actually like it (I like their enthusiasm I guess)

Anyway I noticed something while watching all of this, that I think might explain why a lot of people just seem to... not catch on to the faschy elements of the show ? Or see their presence as criticism rather than support. And I thought I’d share my findings ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Warnings for : discussion of fascism and all that entails, including antisemitism, as well as detailed spoilers for AoT up to the end of Season 3. Might have some vague mentions of later events (including manga stuff), because I am aware of them even if only through commentary on them (and also reading some of the wiki because Hey What The Fuck)

TL;DR : The story of AoT is built in such a way that once you’re invested in the setting and the characters, all of the more objectionable elements end up unquestioned because you’re just too busy making sense of everything the author is throwing at you quickly, be it lore or emotional stuff, or more often both at the same time

So the thing with the fascism in AoT is that, while there are elements of it present from the very start, with the idealization of the military and the “everyone not part of the (literal) in-group is an enemy” premise, it isn’t quite as blunt as most of the tumblr posts about it I’ve seen. Not at first

The first Season (and I’m going to be referring almost exclusively to the anime from here on, one because it’s the material I am most familiar with, and two because it seems to be commonly accepted to be the “final version” of AoT) starts with what can be seen as some pretty intense criticism of the meaninglessness of war. Our protagonists’ hopes are crushed over and over by the deaths of their comrades, Eren (almost) dies (and then gets better) in front of his best friend who can do nothing but watch... the fight that has been idealized so far is shown as brutal, and nothing their training could have really prepared any of them for

The fight against the Female Titan, later, is just as brutal, with almost everyone directly involved in it dying. So, like I said, I can understand why people wouldn’t catch the faschy stuff at first. Because at that point, it’s still subtle

The celebration of the military is reserved for a single branch of it, the Survey Corps, which is deemed the only useful one by virtue of actively engaging in combat and expansionism. (We also later learn of the corruption of other branches which. We’ll get to. Don’t worry, we’ll get to it)

The amount of death is immense, and tragic, but also - it’s all part of the fascistic cult of death. People don’t die as heroes, they just die, and yet - Jean, often seen by commentators as the Normal Relatable One out of everyone, is inspired to join the Survey Corps after Marco’s death, and each meaningless death is used as fuel for the motivations of the survivors. No one quits, no one who matters in any case, no one is truly crushed by the weight of loss. Armin almost is, and so is Mikasa, but they get back up and “move forward” (and also Eren isn’t dead, that kind of helps)

I genuinely cannot remember a single character who doesn’t embrace death as a motivational force. Who goes “I’m done, I’m tired, this is bullshit”

I don’t know if there actually is such a character. A named one, I mean. Beside Floch that one time (and again, we’ll get to it). One who saw the meaninglessness of war and death and got crushed by it, and still mattered as a person anyway. If you’re “weak”, you’re dead to the narrative

So basically, fascistic elements are there, but easy to overlook

Things get more complicated as the story moves on, especially once the military overthrows the government, installs a military dictatorship, purges the parts of the military and government that opposed their coup in a very Night of the Long Knives vibe (with more uh. Artful torture let’s say), and makes territorial expansion official policy

And yes, I do mean it when I call it a military dictatorship. All governmental offices that we see are overseen by military personnel, Historia (the “legitimate” queen) is literally a member of the Survey Corps and also has no experience with governing and is basically a puppet monarch. Also the press is seen having lunch with high-ranking members of the military by the end of Season 3, including the head of the Survey Corps and Levi, the latter of which “jokingly” asks the press to write nice things

So basically, we’ve replaced one oppressive government with... well, the exact same structure, except this time it’s the good guys in power, we swear~

Back when I still followed the manga, the preparation of the coup was about the time I jumped ship. The fact that there was no criticism of it in the story and that it was seen as a universally good thing seriously put me off, especially since my family has some personal experience with military dictatorships and coups (Kissinger drop dead challenge)

Also the story was kind of dragging on, ngl

And no, I am not joking about the fact that the system remains the exact same with just the people on top changing. “The good guys are in charge now” is the way things are presented, without a drop of irony

At the same time as the coup happens (although I think the chronology is slightly different in the manga ? Whatever), we learn of the existence of Literal superior races. The obvious example is obviously the Ackermann family, who have a mental switch that just ??? Allows them to fight better ??? And who aren’t subject to the Coordinate’s memory altering powers. Speaking of the Coordinate, the royal family also has special blood that allows whoever holds the power of the Coordinate be able to use it

Two of the Achermann Übermenschen are basically the strongest members of the Survey Corps, with one of them basically the ideal anyone should strive for even though he does it all effortlessly. And yes, I know Levi is cool and badass and voiced by Kamiya Hiroshi, that’s kind of the point I’m making here. He’s an Übermensch, that’s the way the story is written

Meanwhile the royal family remains in power, unquestioned, because their blood just makes them fit to rule, which. Kind of yikes. Not exceptional for fantasy stuff, but yikes still, and not a good look given all the other stuff

This shit is Not Subtle. We’ll come back to it, but first I want to talk about the Basement, and the fight to get there

I mentioned the corruption of the other military branches outside of the Survey Corps, and we can see here the culmination of this idea : all of the brave, good ones, such as Marlo, who weren’t part of the Survey Corps are now joining the fight to retake the wall. Marlo also helped earlier during the coup, because you know. Changing things from the inside is impossible and the only way to do something for this world is to (check notes) participate in a military coup that doesn’t change the oppressive structures of power

The real corruption is that the right people (which is, by fascist logic, them, strong and capable and Superior) aren’t in power

On the same front, Floch has an understandable breakdown at the idea of dying for nothing. He ends up being the only survivor of this group. He also ends up worshiping strength, which he saw in Erwin’s devil-like behavior and the way he sent them to their death mercilessly. Floch sees death, dozen and dozen of dead bodies surrounding him, and what what he gets out of it is a necessary evil. More than that, he sees in it something with worth, something to embrace, something to worship. The ultimate good, the only thing the world can rely on to move forward

And yes, narratively it makes sense for someone to oppose resurrecting Armin instead of the commander, but also there was no reason to have him so into the death cult aspect of fascism, or to have him stick around once this narrative beat was done. Unless, of course, the idea was to give more speaking time to this part of the ideology

Anyway, people die, the wall is retaken, the basement is reached. And we learn “the truth of this world”. And. Hooooo boy. Where do I even start with this

If the titans were the ultimate out-group, Marley is the incarnation of the enemy who is both strong and weak at the same time. Marley is strong enough to oppress the Eldians living there, Marley has technology developed enough to crush anyone living inside the walls. Marley is weak and scared of the strength of the Eldians and the power to turn into titans

And the Eldians. God, the Eldians. On top of the absolutely repulsive use of holocaust imagery, complete with yellow stars and ghettos, which. Out of context is already tasteless enough, but in the context of Eldia being the master race with a glorious past that is now oppressed by weak and cowardly enemies ? Using holocaust imagery as a narrative tool to call for sympathy is just incredibly gross

Got kind of sidetracked here, but I think it’s worth saying again. Jewish deaths are not a narrative tool

But anyway, as I mentioned, Eldia is the Idealized Glorious Past upon which this story’s fascist ideology builds itself. This can be seen in the way Grischa joins an Eldian supremacy group once he decides he’s fed up with the way things are. Not a group that fights for equality or independence, but one that fights for the restoration of the Eldian empire

And unlike Eren, whose genocidal plan in the later parts of the story could be argued to be a criticism of such ideas, Grischa’s actions are just. Never questioned. No one looks at his journal and goes “Hey What The Fuck man”, even though the only difference between the Rumble and the Eldian Restoration group is, like, power level. Ideologically, they’re the same

So, with all of that said and all these honestly obvious fascist elements to the story, how come people (specifically fans of AoT) don’t see it ?

Well, here’s the thing. For each of these elements, each of these reveals and twists and turns and Hey What The Fuck do you mean the military dictatorship is fine/there are literal superior races/Grischa was a MAGA head ? For each of them, there’s something else going on

It can be an emotional thing - Erwin being in danger of an execution during the coup, Levi and his uncle having a heart to heart, whatever fucked up thing was going on in Grischa’s miserable life

It can be a lore dump, too - the Ackermann thing is sandwiched between revelations about how people can become titans and the reveal that Grischa ate the Queen (and also was eaten by Eren). Everything about Eldia is a lore dump, and then there’s some douchebag who just namedrops Armin and Mikasa even though they’re not even born yet

And it’s like. If you’re invested in this story, in those characters, it’s fucking overwhelming. Just, stuff that will evoke an emotional response, usually a negative one because there’s just so much fucked up shit happening, and information thrown at you in such quick succession that your brain has trouble following it

In short, it’s just like watching Infowars, or some alt-right video playlist. The way things go way too fast, and encourage the watcher to feel something strong, it puts the watcher into a state of almost shock, where they won’t question the sense something made, or whether a plot point or piece of lore isn’t kinda fascist actually

It’s propaganda, pure and simple. And it’s really effective
