obey me characters as the asian extended family stereotypes!! older brother edition
younger brothers / dateables / undateables
massive disclaimer: i am chinese-malaysian, and this is created solely off my own personal experiences and videos on the internet i have seen regarding this topic. these experiences and memories may not apply to you. this is also a joke, these are stereotypes and do not apply to all asian families or all ethnic families. also may be a little ooc since i havent played om! yet
lucifer: the exemplary cousin
when i think of this guy, all i see is my younger cousin
absolute genius, gets high grades, focuses on school, DOES VIOLIN AND PIANO, wears the most concealing clothing, very mature
be prepared because your parents are about to relentlessly compare you to him
"aiyoh mc, why are you not like lucifer yet?! when he was your age, he was raising all his brothers on the streets after he fell from heaven, and what are you doing loh? smoking weed? doing cigarette? studying to be artist?"
during family gatherings, he is absolutely smothered in attention by all the aunties and uncles. most of the time sits with the parents instead of the kids and talks about whatever the fuck they talk about at the parents table
every other kid there gives him the death glare because these mfs KNOW he is loving the attention and the massive ego boost it gives him.
mammon: the disgrace
ok my southeast asian homies (and maybe south as well) we all know this mf
the main antagonist of the auntie gossip
often comes in the form of a sketchy uncle
has at LEAST two tattoos and one of them is probably a dragon (i am projecting my own disgrace uncle on to him so hard)
got in a lot of trouble for either scamming another relative out of money or gambling away their families money
smokes on the balcony during gatherings (if he's even allowed to go)
actually pretty nice and funny but nobody wants to be around him because hes a lowkey faliure. most of the older kids like hanging around him, but often dont stay around him too long as their parents are worried of his influence.
also he probably took up modeling which made the aunties hate him even more
eyes flick to mammon as he seats himself at the dining table, and he responds to them with a nervous smile. "mammon," one of the adults starts lowly, in a belittling tone that made him sick to his stomach. "didn't bring anything to the gathering, not even 古老肉..." they look at him before adding another taunt. "oh.. that's right.. you never learned mandarin, did you? nothing to contribute lah. always take, take, take with you. just LIKE WHAT YOU DID TO MY HUSBAND'S MONEY!!"
ruckus erupts as everyone on the adults table simultaneously starts yelling, as though the family tension built up over the past year head finally snapped.
shit.
Leviathan: the teenager
congratulations dude, you just got the most underrated type of asian at a family gathering.
doesn't get as much attention as lucifer due to being relatively mediocre and not as talented as him, but will occasionally his parents will flex his coding skills or an award he got at school.
doesnt really talk due to not much people at the family gathering being his age group, so he mostly sits in a very solitary corner of the kids table on an uncomfortably small plastic chair and plays games to pass the time.
SPEAKING OF GAMES
the moment the asian parents kick the kids off to the nintendo switch or wii u so they can freely argue about politics or whatever (im not sure im still stuck at the kids table 😭), this man completely shifts.
beats everyone MULTIPLE TIMES. makes them fucking bawl. oh my gosh its actually so funny.
the little kids hate him because he beats them so often in mario kart.

The fourth one was a study of this NatGeo magazine I have about Malaysian creatures WHICH WAS FUN TO DO (everything here is fun to do for me!)
and then theres the one with lotsa moth, also ref from a NatGeo Magazine about bugs extinction, kinda sand but hey moths and a few coleopterans drawings!!!!

Haha also a sexy shrimp-grasshopper man I guess.. whatelseeee... oh yeah sketches of an infographic I needed to do for school. the sketching is so nice but the actual making is HELL
Alright I think this is enough warmup for a biology essay I needed to do lmao, if I'm active again here that means I'm procrasinating. hahahah! ahh.. Doing this on itself is me procrasinating
I hope this post is comprehensible! And wow thank u if u read this far into my bullshit!! I shall put alittle gift down here!

Monster High Reimagined
Toralei stripe character bio/redesign
Toralei Stripe (they/he/she)
Harimau Jaidan daughter of the Stripe family (Chinese Malaysian-British)
(Lesbian)
A bad tempered, mistrustful weretiger adopted by a wealthy family of cat Yokai living in Britain, Toraleis had it rough. Abandoned as a young child they've been cycled through the foster system more than they can think and feel detached from their foster mother Caterina Stripe and her standoffish family as a result, being inducted into monster high on caterina’s father's warning of it being a last chance for the girl before being shipped off to a reform school. Toralei personally express their own feelings regarding all of their baggage through playing loud punk music with his band, the Hissfits (consisting of toralei themself on vocals and guitar and their cousins purrsephone and meowlody on bass and drums) much to the dismay of the half of the campus able to hear it.
Likes: punk subculture and music, playing guitar in her band, drama ,taking catnaps (often in class) and dairy products.
Dislikes: crates and enclosed spaces, people trying to tell him how to live his life, being short (5’3),digital only media and his adoptive grandfather and family (bar purrsephone and meowlody, misfits gotta stick together after all)
Killer style: Toralei's mother always insisted on her dressing "properly" to fit in with her family's smart image, since joining monster high however toralei has been rejigging these old clothes into something more "her style", that being punky Sukeban-inspired looks bound to irk her mum's sensibilities.
Familiar: Sweetfangs, a huge orange tomcat that toralei befriended during her childhood as a street kitten, who bears a passing resemblance to a sabretooth tiger and hates everybody but toralei, who in return spoils him.
Pet Peeve: Their adoptive mother, Ms Stripe's insistence on their education being top-priority. Toralei just doesn't know why she even bothers. They've never done well in school, and no students or teachers either human or monster ever put much stock in them either. In a few years both will be out of each others lives anyway, reform school or not,so why even care?
Freaky Flaw: Their self loathing. To say toralei has issues is an understatement, and said issues have manifested into a frustratingly self defeating look on life. To toralei though it's just how it is,she's had to be on their own for most of their life and fight to get what she wants without anyone helping, planting the idea early that it was simply because he wasn't worth helping, and regardless of the changes in her life recently she expects it all to be the same at monster high. After all,if the people who insisted they were there to help never did anything for toralei, why shouldn't this be true for this new lot?
Spooky Secret: Toralei has a very pronounced West Country accent (having grown up in devon) that he masks for fear it makes him sound too “farmer-y” with a pseudo-cockney one, regardless it tends to slip in times of high emotion, including during when they sing, but the fact that they're attending an American school means few are the wiser.
Dream job: Rocking out on the underground punk circuit and touring around the British isles when they're done with school, despite her Foster mothers disapproval and insistence on studying. Although another, more personal reason for this dream lifestyle being that through it toralei hopes to meet other Harimau Jaidan in the UK as well as maybe track down her birth parents on the road in-between shows.
Five Fearsome facts
Harimau Jaidan and by extent other types of werecat are a rare type of monster, even more so outside of their native Malaya and toralei has spent much of her life regardless of setting with this gnawing feeling of isolation. Even if she now has purrsephone and meowlody she's still the only one of her species at monster high,so the feeling of being alone in a crowd remains...
Toralei has a marked dislike for a lot of modern pop music, considering it too corporate and without any genuine message for her liking compared to punk and rock. (Although when their cousins aren't around he does listen to a few of his cousins Jpop CDs,don't tell anybody though…)
Aside from punk subculture,Toralei's other great love is dairy products, and beguiling their hard-edged image, ice cream, boba tea and other sweet treats rank among their all-time favourites. Toralei is also ragingly lactose intolerant but this doesn't stop him.
On top of singing and playing guitar for the Hissfits, toralei makes all of their bands merchandise ranging from badges and stickers to screen printed shirts and posters, and often incorporates some of it into her day-to-day outfits, arguing that actually the printing is intended to be wonky (it's not) and it wouldn't be properly punk if it weren't a little asymmetrical.
As a result of distrusting the model of digital only music distribution, toralei uses a lot of physical media to enjoy their music, using a physical CD player and distributing the hissfits music via burned CDs sold with the bands other merchandise. Toralei also uses said skills in making mixtapes for the people he cares most for in their life and casual Internet piracy.
Hello again everyone, I'm back with another one of these finally (and of one of my favourite monster high characters of all no less) + I'm also very close to finishing another profile so I doubt it'll be long before the next one of these is up,but anyways as usual, an explanation for my design choices:
Having previously drawn my version of toralei, whose design you can see here (hope to do more art of them and the rest of my monster high designs in the future btw) you probably already know that I've changed her monster type from a plain old werecat to a Harimau Jaidan, a were-tiger from Malayan folklore (Inspired by @jdoodlin amazing toralei design, who first introduced me to the Harimau Jaidan concept)
To keep it short, I never liked the "werecat" label, it felt a bit too artificial and I knew that there were multiple sorts of cat monsters from mythologies across the world that would make for much more interesting designs than just plain old cat people, hence why toralei is the only one of the 5 werecats to actually remain a werecat (well, weretiger). As for the others well, you'll just have to watch this space,as I have a whole smorgasbord of ideas for the twins,Catty and Catrine I can't wait to share with you all eventually in art and writing.
Anyways, hope you like this character bio,see you for the next one.

- Beware the Lurker of The Deep; Anis -
About a while ago, @hphm-jeniferltheman made an OC based on the various cyprids or creatures from her culture. [Named; Kapoya] and I love it a lot! A little later, another user; @akaisenhatake made their own OC of the same theme. [Named; Aaron]
Not wanting to miss out on such a concept that can highlight some of South East Asia’s strange monsters, I decided to do a little research and something caught my eye.
Legends among village folk and fishermen in some parts of the Malaysian Peninsula tell tales of a mysterious phenomenon that they witnessed and survived to tell the tale. A creature that is suggested to be larger than the boats due to the amounts of bubbles it produces from beneath the murky waters.
Tumblr media
- Meet Anis -
The anthropomorphic version of the Sulur Bidar (Su-lur Bi-da-r). In the actual version, The Sulur Bidar is described as a Man-eating carpet monster who looks like a normal carpet/ tikar (a type of woven mat) with snake head for tendrils on each corner. (The first picture is the official)
If you ever get too close. The creature will unleash its heads and drown its victims like a burrito and consume. Looking into it further, the Sulur Bidar is also described to have a foul odor when it surfaces. In some illustrations, they have one of the heads be replaced with a woman’s head.
As you can see, this isn’t the exact version you may think of. That is because I had to play a little fast and loose with the description. My version of the Sulur Bidar is a sort of humanized version of the creature.
In some ways a twisted version of the Lamia; The half-human and half-snake woman but instead of a snake’s tail, its a snake’s head with her limbs replaced by a pair of snake heads as well.
Tumblr media
- Basic Information -
Anis is the human name of the Sulur Bidar. She is based on Sucy from < Little Witch Academia > Anis is beautiful and a little mysterious. When she’s not being a river mermaid, she will cover herself up in layers upon layers of cloth to hide her snakes and shop for clothes and proper food since humans to her are, junk food.
The snake heads each have names, Named after an Icebreaker game known locally among school cadets as; [Tepi, Depan, Belakang] Translation; Side, Front, Back. As for the names, Anis is a Left-dominant. So her left hand- I mean, left snake head is; Tepi. At the lower half of her body is the “Kakak” (older sister) addressed as; Depan and the non-dominant is her right; Belakang.
That is all I have about her for now. I will make her official eventually but for now, its all just doodles. As for her connection to Sadie and Hector...That is still in the works. That is all for now.

Thanks for reading

My favorite menu items that I tried from Jollibee:
Before I tried Jollibee in my country last year, I did some research about the restaurant on Wikipedia by finding out what foods they have on the menu compared to the Philippines.
Without further ado, let's get started!
Jolly Sweet Spaghetti: This is one of my go-to menu items whenever I get stressed out. When I ordered the Jolly Sweet Spaghetti from their menu, I wanted to know what it tasted like compared to Filipino traditional spaghetti.
When my food arrived, I wanted to know what this dish tasted like compared to the Filipino version of Jolly Spaghetti. This meal was topped with sweet banana ketchup, savory tomato sauce, red beef hotdogs, and cheddar cheese. As for the spaghetti, it was perfectly al-dente, and the pasta did not get soggy when it came with the set.
Overall, the Malaysian version of the sweet-style spaghetti is better than the other restaurant's version of spaghetti in the Philippines which the sauce has a not-so-sweet taste and the sausages are not as flavorful as the beef and pork-flavored sausages.
Tumblr media
Peach Mango Pie:
One of my favorite snacks from Jollibee is this sweet hot filling of Filipino mangoes with peach slices in this deep-fried pastry which makes it a tasty treat right after a meal.
I used to dislike mangoes back in my middle school years. However, when I started to buy the dried version of mangoes, it tasted sweet and not too sour for my liking.
As I got older, I started to like mangoes and they had a gummy-like texture with sugar that had a sweet crunch.
The blended mango filling in the pie was sweet and not too sour. As for the bits of peach, it was delicious when mixed together and put in a pie. I love this hot dessert and when I go to Bukit Bintang, I would eat it again when the final exams are over.
Tumblr media
Fiesta Floats:
Did you know that they had a different type of Fiesta Floats topped with a perfect swirl of Vanilla ice cream that encouraged buyers to try a summer treat in the Philippines back in the 2010s?
Unfortunately, you can only find these three types of floats here in Malaysia. While in the Philippines, it's popular among Filipinos who want to get a refreshing drink during the summer break.
Two months ago, after New Year's Day, I wanted to order one of the Fiesta Floats at the kiosk in Sunway Pyramid as a refreshing drink for myself due to us getting lost in the mall. But I saw that the drinks were sold out due to a shortage of ingredients.
A week later, after the tour of the B-Verse Beyond the Stars Exhibition, I went to another restaurant in Pavilion Bukit Jaili where I saw that all of the Floats were available on their menu.
I was delighted that they still serve the drink to everyone who wants to buy it. I ordered a Chocolate Float for me to try it out. However, it does not look the same as the one in the picture, but the staff members did their best to make a perfect swirl of vanilla ice cream.
The chocolate drink wasn't sweet, and I could only taste the chocolate inside the milk that had an okay taste as I drank a sip. As for the vanilla ice cream swirl, it wasn't that bad for my liking as seen in the commercial on Facebook. Next time if the drink is not sweet, I will tell the manager to add more chocolate milk for the drink.
Tumblr media
Overall, I could suggest to the locals who want to try out these foods from this Filipino fast-food restaurant in Malaysia. As for the Philippines, it is not recommended to Muslims as some of the products are not permissible for them to eat.
If I have time, I could bring one of my friends to try this restaurant out for a treat after class to explore what fast food spaghetti tastes like compared to other kinds of pasta in restaurants.

When I was 6 I was fortunate enough to be admitted to a Chinese kindergarten. Its name was Kwan Cheng. It was part of a well-respected network of schools.
What I witnessed there I don't share because it's so often used as ammunition against the evil, oppressive, hard-nosed, authoritarian Chinese. When what happened there was not exceptional. Many different types of schools throughout Malaysia, with the exception of the westernised montessori/international schools, permitted similar.
There was a little boy in my class. He had trouble keeping up. Not really interested in academia I think, but we never spoke, and he was never safe enough to talk about why he struggled. So to the rest of the class he was just that kid that did not try hard enough. Who was stupid.
One day, a teacher lost her temper at him. She dragged him to the front of the class. She began yanking his clothing - his t-shirt upward, his pants downward - to reveal his bare body. With the intention of teetering on the edge of straight up showing people his underwear, etc. Obviously without his consent, but he was powerless to resist. We were ordered to point at him and laugh whenever she bared his flesh. We did that. The humiliation and pain on his face is indescribable.
I hate when Americans talk down to us about ableism. Malaysians and other people like us have had to harden ourselves in ways you cannot even imagine.

Myra x Anastacius Malaysian Sekolah Menengah (Secondary School) AU and because it’s set in a Malaysian school, of course they have to go through every student’s favourite anual event:
The Milo Truck coming to school.
While Myra’s the type to take her time with her cup of Milo (mainly because she doesn’t want to enter class so early), Anastacius gulps down the entire thing and would even ask for Roger his Milo.

How Malaysians coped under the pandemic- and public health 😷
Tumblr media
P/S : I'm typing this out from my point of view as I experienced the pandemic as an 18 year old who just graduated from high school so basically I was not studying that time, and would play PUBG with friends I barely talk to now until 3a.m. Hopefully I'll still be as insightful.
When Covid-19 hit drastically in Malaysia in 2020, the whole nation went under lockdown which meant people couldn't physically interact with other people who didn't live under the same roof. From here, you can clearly tell how social media fits in this week's post. Call me an optimist but I'm glad to have gone through such a time with social media existing, in the 2nd decade of the 21st Century. I clearly remember a week turning into 3 weeks, to a month, to just 3 whole months of lockdown with no simple way out.
Over the past 2 years, social media has helped a lot in spreading information about the virus which clearly effected the public health. Alongside that, the pandemic effected other concerns too which included people losing their jobs, economic crisis, people's mental health and also the lack of food for households. With social media, it felt as if we weren't totally alone, although most days felt really draining and undetermined.
Tumblr media
Alas in good light, those with access to social media were entertained by applications such as Tiktok, which blew up a lot during the pandemic because of its constant mindless scrolls of videos. I mean, it's not like we could do anything else anyway. There was the Dalgona Coffee trend, a lot of Megan Thee Stallion dances made and the 'I'm bored in the house yeah I'm in the house bored', if you know, you know, I guess!
Okay, I'm steering away a bit, back to public health!
I always say social media is helpful and I see the positive side of it mainly because my insights were all these infographics regarding Covid-19. Day after day they were go viral and with the ever ending use of Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook, people were easily aware about these important details.
Tumblr media
For example, this infographic above guides individuals on how to use a face mask, because I do recall some people that weren't sure which type to buy, how to wear it and even shared their face masks with people. That was honestly so dangerous so I'm glad they came up these things to spread awareness.
Tumblr media
I hope many Malaysians (who see this, lol) remember this image above! Because every single day family group chats would be updated with this on the Covid-19 cases and also all over other social media applications. It was so scary when the numbers kept increasing for positive cases, but we were always hopeful for more recoveries in the days coming.
Tumblr media
There was also this application made for only Malaysians called MySejahtera which was quite successful in my opinion. Before this app was created, individuals who went out had to write down their names, phone number and their body temperature before entering a shopping mall, store, restaurant, or anywhere enclosed to be precise. Unfortunately, there was a plothole to this method as people could get away with writing down and also lie about their credentials. This is where the app comes in.
By August of 2021, most people had already gotten their 2 doses of vaccines. With that, all enclosed areas would restrict those with only 2 full doses to enter. A friend of mine who was interning in Kuala Lumpur that time couldn't even enter Pavillion mall because she had only 1 dose. This was all automatically uploaded and kept in each Malaysian citizen's MySejahtera. In order to enter, all you needed to do was scan the QR Code provided.
Tumblr media
Social Media also enabled for this infographic above to be shared around many Malaysians before getting their vaccine. Even though there wasn't much choice since Malaysia had only fully provided Pfizer for the elderly, AZ and Sinovac for the rest, it was still good to be notified about the other vaccines existing.
Tumblr media
I always love a clean, simple yet informed infographic and the image above did just that. It kept to its main point and conducted it well for people to read and dissect the message. That is, the message above is to spread awareness on places that one may highly likely get the virus.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) Malaysia created several infographics and guides for those who seek help during hard times like the pandemic. I'm not going to go in detail but if you check out their site https://www.who.int/malaysia/emergencies/covid-19-in-malaysia/information/mental-health, you can see that WHO provided for those who have lost their loved once, for the frontliners and even those who were struggling with their mental health.
I wasn't enrolled in Swinburne that time but they had also done a Swinburne's Mental Health awareness week, which is good as a university in Sarawak to promote such importance to students. Checklists and Bingos were a way to engage with a lot of people online so it was quite popular at that time. Here, I scrolled all the way down to @/swinburnesarwak's 2020 posts to find this.
Tumblr media
All and all, it's good to know how Malaysians all over used social media to their fullest in maintaining a safe environment for most during the pandemic. Sharing these correct infographics, articles regarding the virus may seem small but here's the beauty of social media : nothing is ever as small when it's already out there.

Struggles on the Sidelines: Malaysian Creators and the Shadowy Algorithm Week 7
Tumblr media
The dream of becoming a social media star is alive and well for creators in Malaysia, especially those from marginalized backgrounds or with niche content with the algorithms that curate feeds feel like a gatekeeper with an unknown key.
Many Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students want to become social media influencers instead of pursuing higher studies. A UCSI survey found that 34% of this group, aged 18 to 20, want to be influencers. The issue of low wages for many students who drop out of school raised concerns among the youth. Advertisers can earn thousands of dollars by posting short videos promoting food and other products and services. Parents and teachers should encourage young people to embark on this rewarding journey. Understandably, the success stories of influencers highlight situations where people have faced challenges or failed (1).
Platforms like YouTube and Instagram thrive on algorithms that personalize user experiences. But the creators who fuel these platforms often find themselves on the fringes. The study argues that these algorithms can act as a form of uneven platform governance.
By 2024, social media systems in Malaysia will evolve into complex systems that use advanced artificial intelligence to personalize content delivery. New algorithms go beyond general content to understand individual user preferences to deliver personalized experiences. It actively identifies and reduces the spread of misinformation, creating a more trustworthy digital ecosystem. Manufacturers and businesses must adapt strategies to succeed in the growing digital landscape (2).
There are many ways to deal with creators and algorithms. Opaque rules struggle with creators to understand the exact criteria for how their content is displayed. This lack of transparency makes it difficult to optimize their work for visibility. Some creators suspect they have been shadowbanned, a practice where platforms throttle content reach without explicit notification. It can be devastating for creators trying to build an audience. Algorithms might favor specific types of content bias, leaving creators with unique voices or perspectives struggling to gain traction.
These factors push creators to navigate a system they cannot fully grasp. Some people practice self-censorship by altering the content they produce to meet the perceived preferences of algorithms. Others fight back, attempting to game the system through strategies that might not always align with their creative vision.
One of the studies underscores the importance of understanding these experiences. Social media creators are not just entertainers. They are cultural producers shaping online discourse. When algorithms silence marginalized voices, it limits the diversity of ideas and perspectives we encounter online, such as microcelebrities shaping every identity construction (3).
The fight for a fairer platform goes beyond Malaysia. It is a global struggle for creators to have a say in how their work can be seen in platforms to be more transparent and accountable in their governance.
