also re: andor, i have never in my life fancied andy serkis so was puzzled as to why kino loy was kinda doin’ it for me?
andy serkis in a bts interview: oh yeah kino didn’t come with a backstory so i decided to play him like a foreman, a union man who’d been jailed for labor organizing.
me: ah. mystery solved.

a page from the 1992-2 issue of Screen (Экран) magazine (formerly Soviet Screen/Советский экран) featuring reviews of Hellraiser 1 + 2, Cat People (1982) and Poltergeist 1-3 by A. Kokarev and I. Kokarev (brothers?)
i just really like the image of Pinhead making the 😐 face with big read letters saying THE NERVOUS ARE IMPLORED NOT TO WATCH. i like this even better than the real Hellraiser poster, might get a print made someday...

Andy Serkis saying that his late brother-in-law - an actual union steward & organizer who led a life of service - was his inspiration for his characterization of Kino Loy?
I’m fine, really. I’m fine. 😭😭😭

Mel clearly has mommy issues but what do you think Mel's father is like in the show? He is only referenced once in Arcane, Ambessa makes a comment about Mel having her father's memory. What kind of man did Ambessa marry assuming they are even married? Do you think he is as strong willed as Ambessa or maybe he is where Kino and Mel get their Pacifism from. Is he even alive in the Arcane current timeline? Do they not talk about him on purpose to strengthen the relationship portrayal between Mel and Ambessa? I know you gave us a snippet about Mel's father, maybe you could expand upon that.
In Arcane, I get the sense, simply from the way Ambessa speaks of Mel's dad, that he's no longer with them. And yet, the fact that she doles out the remark in a calculatedly appreciative manner suggests she holds fond memories of him - and is using these to bridge the gap between her and her daughter.
I figure Mel might've been close to her father - or at least shared traits similar to his - and that it was something Ambessa was privately amused by, even as her daughter's soft nature exasperated her.
I can't spoil too much for FnF, but Mel's dad is definitely the smooth talker and the striker of deals in his and Ambessa's duo. Theirs, while not a love match, is definitely a 'Perfectly Arranged Marriage' trope, in that they both gel extremely well together, and get on like a house on fire both in the war-room and between the sheets.
I'll also expand more on why Ambessa chose him in Mal De Mer, and the state of their union from Mel's PoV, with her reaching the startling realization that she's walked a similar path as Ambessa, and chosen a non-Noxian with a crafty edge and a gift with words, for strategic rather than sentimental reasons.
Oopsie.

What’s your favorite character from Andor (besides Cassian)?
Kino Loy
No, you don't understand.
I was so disappointed to see everyone raving about Luthen. Who cares about Luthen Rael. He's a rich man with moral qualms who puts other people in danger while he sits on Coruscant and pulls the Strongs.
Good for him, he's eloquent. He probably went to a great school.
Kino and Luthen are foil to each other, and what amazing foil they are.
They're both rebel leaders, but they're two very different kinds. And while Luthen is the rich man playing at being the benevolent billionaire while destroying peoples lives
Kino is the union leader.
Kino talks about hope and solidarity, about lifting together and sharing the load. Kino talks about climbing because he knows the fight is backbreaking and hurts, and he knows and understands and sympathises enough to encourage everyone else to help each other.
Kino is from the bottom and he understands that we are never going to be free if we're not all free.
These two men both encompass two sides of the rebellion we see clashing in RogueOne, and the most beautiful thing is that just as Jyn proves Saw right again and again, so does Cassian and the entirety of Rogue One prove Kino right.
It is in solidarity, in abandoning social hierarchy, in lifting each other up and leaving no one behind, that Rogue One as a team of several dozen rebels, succeed in making the galaxy listen.
It is because Cassian abandons the darkness, the sacrifice of others, (abandons the kind of rebel Luthen made him embody) and climbs because he refuses to let his partner be lost or confused or alone, that he manages to get there in time to shoot KRennick and empower Jyn to speak to the entire galaxy.
Kino Loy spoke solidarity back into cinema and I love his character so much for it.

Since in the Empire we’d all get arrested and end up in Narkina 5, obviously Kino Loy…
And during better times someone with leader qualities like him would certainly also become a boss somewhere in a more positive context. So even in a better world still Kino Loy.
union leader Kino Loy! it's (practically) canon
