Ryan Gray Backstory

My version of his backstory is a combination of both stories from Another Code R : A Journey Into Lost Memories, and it's remaster in Another Code Recollection, as his backstory is completely different from one game to another. So I decided to combine both backstories into one in my AU.

Decided to do that because in my AU/Headcanon, it's his birthday today ♥

Ryan Gray (born as Ryan Fitzgerald) is a major character in Another Code R : A Journey Into Lost Memories and its remake Another Code Recollection.

He is a scientist employed by J.C. Valley, and a scientific prodigy who has been working since his teenage years.

Background :

Ryan was a child of two scientists, his father being Judd Fitzgerald. His mother died when he was young boy, which emotionally broke him. It is explained that she saved Ryan from being hit by a vehicle, unfortunately she died doing so when he was three years old. This event occured around 1983. As said above, this left a deep emotional wound in his heart and he closed himself off, no longer allowing himself to feel happiness. He stopped speaking as well.

In 1992, Judd used the Another, which was still a prototype at the time to heal that wound. Judd wanted to erase Ryan's memory of his mother and her death. Plus, his son became the first test subject at the age of 12. Sayoko Robbins, Rex and Judd were there to see this experiment unfold. Sayoko was aware that the experiment was dangerous but Judd was obsessed with "bringing back his son". Richard Robbins and the other workers, except Bill Edward, whom Judd trusted blindly, and therefore told him about it, didn't know this because the experiment was conducted in total secrecy because of Judd's orders. Unfortunately for Ryan, he became paralyzed and later died (because the Another was incomplete). The experiment was a failure and Judd was emotionally hurt by this. Ryan's memories were extracted during that experiment. They were recorded through liquid memory and stored in a tank in the J.C. Valley's basement storage. After Ryan's death, his body was buried in an island and a gravestone was placed there. It is shown that he has the surname Fitzgerald on the gravestone. Ryan was then misled to believe that Judd was not his father, only his mentor.

Ryan was a child prodigy ; he attended university at the age of 10, and became scientist at 16. Ryan was recruited into J.C. Valley. He received a cherry blossom kaleidoscope as a gift from Sayoko when he was 9 around 1989 ; Sayoko's mother originally owned it.

At one point, Sayoko noticed that a "conscious life-form" was born from Ryan's memory data. A construct version of Ryan remembered that they had the feeling of swimming through a sea of memories and they read their memory, learned and slowly grew. Sayoko reported her findings but Judd quickly dismissed them. He states that self-propagation of memory data is impossible and he never tried to understand him unlike Ashley's mother. Once she left, he would glance at the tank every so often. One day, he started talking to it. He said "I'll find a way to revive you, Ryan". Judd continued developing the Another alone and he started a new experiment which involved overwriting memories using the Another. He began writing Ryan's memory data onto other subjects in an attempt to revive his son. Carrying out these experiments recquired him to create many copies of Ryan's data. He extracted his test subject's memories and accumulated them all into liquid memory. Judd's experiment was a failure since it wasn't possible to complete the Another without Sayoko. The ability to overwrite memory never came to fruition. He abandoned its development and sealed up the lab using the Another.

Six years prior, a "terrible" storm tore through Lake Juliet. J.C. Valley lost electricity and the building was destroyed. The tanks storing the liquid memory were damaged and they leaked into the lake. These are the ones that contained not only Ryan's memories but many others'. It became one with the water, so in a way it felt like that this lake had become their brain. Overtime, the construct of Ryan was able to access J.C. Valley's network, specifically in Judd's computer, this allowed them to access all sorts of informations, but nothing about Ryan's story itself.

At some point in time, Bill told Ryan the truth about his "death", his childhood memories being erased and of Judd's biological relationship to him. Enraged, Ryan then wanted revenge on Judd, and planned to use Bill as a tool to enact his revenge, pretending to ally with him. Ryan planned to kill all of Judd's successors, such as Sayoko, as his form of revenge. Ryan also orchestrated the funding disaster that befell M.J. Labs. It is also possible that Ryan had plans to murder his own father after.

In 2006, he sent Richard an anonymous e-mail, calling him a blissfully ignorant fool and claiming Sayoko's death was orchestrated and that there was more to it than he knows.

Ryan first appears at the campsite, far from everyone at the back, and has a brief exchange with Ashley about her interests, why doesn't she want to be a scientist like her parents, what it's like to grow up with a scientist as a father, and memories of Sayoko. Once the conversation is over, Ashley briefly turns around and he disappears.

He is a trusting figure to Ashley Mizuki Robbins who enjoys having lunch with him. Unaware to her, he previously aided Sofia Callaghan in stealing Ashley's bag and can be seen briefly as the one driving the black car after Ashley gets off the bus.

Ryan appears at the Robbins cottage and tells Ashley she should not be friends with Matthew Crusoe due to the history between Crusoe Resort and J.C. Valley. He invites her to his cottage so they can discuss more about it. Matt, who overhears the conversation, comments that Ryan has a "cold" and "unfriendly" voice, although Ashley dismissed him as just being a calm scientist. Once Ashley arrived at his house, Ryan tells her more about the history. They talk more about Sayoko and how she helped Ryan when he was going though some "treatments". He also gives Ashley the kaleidoscope he received from Sayoko.

Once Ashley reaches J.C. Valley, Ryan is seen interacting with Sofia, revealing they have been working together on leaking information about the ANOTHER project. Ashley mentions Ryan to Ian and Gina, but none of them seem to know him despite supposedly being colleagues.

When Sofia is discovered and Richard confronts her, he sends Ashley to the exit through the elevator to ask for help. Ryan stops the elevator between floors and takes Ashley to the ANOTHER lab, which had been sealed off by Judd years ago.

Near the end of the game, it is revealed that Ryan is essentially the game's main villain. It will soon be discovered that Ryan is a cold-hearted manipulative lying sociopath. First, Ryan erases 17 years of Ashley's father's memories. When Ashley became visibly upset by crying, Ryan snaps at her to stop crying. He coerces Ashley into a memory overwrite experiment in which she will replace her memories with her mother's, but it fails when Ashley does not want to replace any of her important life memories, with the help of Sayoko's "ghost", who prevents this using the R.A.S.

Ashley awakes and find Ryan besides her. He first calls her Sayoko, thinking that the overwriting process has been successful, but Ashley corrects him and explains how Sayoko protected her and rejected her memories using the R.A.S., and that she doesn't want her daughter losing her memories to come back, causing Ryan to become frustrated.

Ryan reveals he intended to break a promise with Ashley and orders her to leave. When she becomes emotional again, Ryan taunts her but Ashley shouts at him she won't cry in front of someone who does not know how to feel and does not understand basic emotions. Ryan hears Ashley has her T.A.S. and claims he will use it to recover her father's memories, but Ashley refuses as he already betrayed her trust, prompting Ryan to hold her and Richard at gunpoint. The two are saved by Rex Alfred who tackles Ryan ; Rex ends up being shot in the shoulder before Ryan flees. Rex takes them to his office to reveal a series of things :

Judd had a son named Ryan, who passed away years ago. Judd used the Another prototype to try to erase Ryan's memories of his mother's fatal accident, which had traumatized him.

Judd erased Sayoko's memories with Rex's help when she decided to quit in order to focus on being a mother. Rex gave her the pendant with memories of the day Ashley was born.

J.C. Valley was responsible for the pollution of the lake. Years ago, there was a storm that badly damaged the labs. It broke tanks that contained mnemonic fluid and it filtered ro the lake, causing its contamination. Judd used Another through the security cameras to manipulate the residents of Lake Juliet so that they turned on Crusoe Resort and blamed them for the contamination, causing their bankruptcy.

Richard and Ashley give chase to Ryan on a small island in the middle of Lake Juliet. There, they discovered the source of the lake's water, and Ryan's grave. Upon being confronted, Ryan reveals he encouraged Bill to kill Sayoko and steal her research on Another back in 1994, and that he was the one who lured Richard to Lake Juliet. Ryan intended to manipulate Richard into completing Another, and then sell Another to a company Bill also dealt with. Ryan tries to kill himself by asking Richard to kill him and even passes Richard a gun and orders him to shoot, but Richard can not shoot Ryan as he is "not physically real".

Making Richard unconscious, Ryan explain how he was formed to Ashley, and to reveal that Sayoko knex about him. Ryan then reveals that the water from the island is cleansing the mnemotic fluid from the lake and that he and the other memories that were leaked to the lake during the storm will soon disappear. Ashley promises that he will be remembered and will be alive in people's hearts, much like she did with D. With peace and regret of mind, Ryan spended some time with the others as an act of repentance before he would eventually pass away.

Personality :

Ryan is intelligent, but he is also essentially a sociopath, and perhaps a psychopath, who diminishes the value of human emotions. He is very bitter and resentful towards his father, and he mentions he has never really cared about Judd once in his entire life. He is also shown to be manipulative and able to hide his darker and very dangerous side, gaining the trust of people such as Richard and Rex, hiding behind a facade.

There is also a good amount of evidence suggesting Ryan is depressed, unable to find much hapiness or meaning in life, besides his work. He also appears to be quite lonesome with no evidence of any close friends. He lives in a modern-looking house with lots of gray walls and furniture. When Ashley asks him about his choice of interior decoration, he admits he does not care about any of it as he barely lives in it, showing he is far from being materialistic. However, this could also serve as a hint of Ryan not being attached to "earthly things" or the "human realm". Ashley remarks his house is eerily clean, but not in a "it has been cleaned" sense, rather a "it has not been used" sense. Ryan also appears to be a drinker as Ashley finds a bottle of wine in his kitchen. His house also lacks personal items, though it does have some abstract art and lots of science textbooks, as well as Sayoko's kaleidoscope.

Ryan can be somewhat condescending, although it is unclear if he is aware he comes off this way. For example, he makes some comments towards Ashley that can be interpreted as backhanded, as if he views Ashley poorly and a simpleton. When Ashley comments she is 16, Ryan explains to her, "Which means that thirteen years ago, you were three". He explains to her that flashbacks are sudden memories from one's past. He bluntly asks her if she has any traumatic childhood memories. When Ashley tells him she wants to be a musician, he attributes it to her young age, saying, "although it is rather unlikely to become reality, one is free to dream as one pleases". After a conversation about how brilliant Sayoko was, he says that while Ashley resembles her, she is just like her father. When Ashley asks what he means, all Ryan can initially say is a "hard worker", despite not asking Ashley about her work ethic. He later says, "He's the exact opposite of Sayoko and myself".

Ryan is smart and even manipulative since he was told the truth by Bill, and his vendetta against his father or Sayoko led him to the sociopath path that he is now, going as far as to orchestrate Sayoko's murder at a fairly young age. Ryan is not afraid of using others and even see them as tools (including Ashley), so he could finish the Another. Additionally, he had an existential crisis since he questioned his purpose and birth.

As a child, Ryan was seemingly a joyful person. However, he became emotionless, mute and closed himseld off after his mother's death.

"Ashley...STOP CRYING ! NOW ! Don't make me repeat myself. i don't like seeing people cry. I believe that the emotions that trigger crying are unnecessary for humans. In fact, crying is more of a defense mechanism. Nothing more. When the weak believe they will be subject to emotional distress, they always resort to tears. They pour their stress into these eye secretions in an attempt to expel it from their own bodies. It is a defense mechanism, designed to protect people from their own feelings. And even if those emotions are misguided, these weak-hearted people justify them with tears. The foremost example is small children whining and crying. From this, it seems fair to conclude that tears are nothing more than a sign of weakness. And thus, I despise crying."

"Never. Not once in my entire life." (when Ashley asks if he has ever cried)

"This is unfathomable. You've rejected all of Sayoko's memories ? Ashley, I really thought that you were smarter than this. Hasn't it occured to you that the memories of your mother, a true genius, are more important than your trifling, pathetic recollections ?"

"That promise was made to be broken, Ashley."

"Ashley, I have no more use for you. Leave. Oh, are you going to cry again ? I wonder which emotion will overwhelm your heart this time. Sorrow ? Anger ? Regret ?"

"A drive for knowledge. I have always felt that, too. Why was I born ? What is my purpose ?"

"I've never encountered someone like you. Someone who wished to know me."

Trivia :

Ryan's theme can be considered to be Spring of Memories due to it often playing whenever he appears.

Ryan can be viewed as Ashley's foil ; both have scientist parents and their fathers distanced themselves from their lives and fabricated lies. Their mothers died trying to protect them when they were only three years old. Ashley was said to be a crybaby after Sayoko died, while Ryan was severely affected when his mother died. They have also been quite lonely for most of their lives. Their hairstyles are also somewhat similar. The difference between Ashley and Ryan, however, is that Ashley learned how to forgive her father while Ryan sought vengeance.

Although not explicitly said, it can be speculated that Ryan's lack of emotions and sociopathic tendencies are the side effect of the experiment on the prototype Another. The formula affected Ryan's brain in order to make him forget, so it may have affected the region regulating emotions as well. If this theory is true, then Ryan could be viewed as a victim of a tragic upbringing due to matters outside his control, just like Ashley was.

It can be speculated that Ryan may have been the one who burned down Judd's villa recently, given Ryan' resentment of Judd, though the true cause of the fire is never revealed.

you don't stay as a tow truck driver forever. instead, you end up as a personal trainer for a while and that's how you meet melody, a bridesmaid to be who's worried about fitting into her dress. you think she's beautiful and she must find you tolerable, because she ends up agreeing to go on a date with you.

(you were never her trainer and the first time you saw her counting calories, you kept an eye out to make sure her fitness goal really was just about that dress.)

it's a whirlwind courtship right until it isn't. the first gate opens and melody is one of the many unnamed casualties in the growing number of deaths reported on the news. then your brother dies. then you awaken.

you fight and you train, and you gain scars from it, but you also gain stories and connections. the average child from before, you stop being average as the gates open and monsters are cut down before you. s-class fighter, they say, but you just think of yourself as a soldier, someone that was torn apart by grief and willing to throw yourself into the first cause that would take you. your siblings were the extraordinary ones, so how is it fair that you're the only one left standing?

despite your skill with weapons, you're still not good enough to save everyone. the people around you die sometimes, and it's not always your fault, but sometimes it is. one day, you're one of only two people to walk out of a dungeon, and the woman limping next to you says she's going to buy you a drink for saving her life. her name is evelyn and you end up marrying her.

the two of you are a good team at home and in a dungeon, fighting and watching each other's backs, trusting each other and making it through the monsters and the rising odds. you work with other people, but it's rare the two of you work apart. until one day you're wounded, and she goes off with someone else. you ask her not to, and she swears she'll be fine, she kisses you and says you worry too much.

evelyn never makes it back home and a healer has to sedate you to keep you from some madcap quest to find a cold body. you know you wouldn't find it, and the healer is kind enough not to call you out on what would likely happen.

you don't let people in much anymore. you have the guild, but you don't have the same connection anymore, not after so many strings have been cut. there's only so many times you can lose someone in your life and you've lost enough. you go into the dungeons, you do your job, you don't make friends.

and whatever you do, you certainly don't love anyone anymore.

her debut into society comes with an official engagement, the betrothal coming as quite a shock to others, the truth hidden like a secret. her parents insist she maintain the façade that all was organic, a series of happenstance and not the meddling of families looking to expand their reach. her better - half is her rock throughout it all, despite the stress it brings. what once felt like a romance novel now feels like a weight on her chest, her fate signed on the dotted line before she ever had a chance to enjoy life at its fullest. but duty is duty, and she walks into it with a knowing smile.

alara's journey mirrors her father's in a lot of ways, and she fails to break the cycle that he set into motion. as the first - born, he sought the approval of his parents and was desperate to win their affection. similarly, alara is desperate to win her father's approval — she has her mother's approval and affection, but her father has always been just out of her reach.

she's driven by duty at the end of the day — her parents expect her to behave in a certain way and she does, because that's what's expected. she spends a lot of time fantasizing about her wants and needs, and aside from her... situationship, spends very little time actually acting on it.

despite her moral failings, alara really does value her better - half. they're an incredible friend and partner, and the person she trusts most in this world. they're in parallel situations and the only people who truly understand what they're going through is each other. while a number of marriages in the era are "arranged" in some way, shape, or form, alara likes to think she's the only person going through what she is. because she's quirky like that.

for as charming and sweet as she can be, alara can be quite abrasive as well. she has oldest daughter syndrome to the extreme.

she would love to visit home one day — despite never knowing turkey from anything more than her parents' recollections, she feels a strong connection and desperately longs to visit.

at the end of the day, she really does have the best intentions. however, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, so it doesn't matter much at the end of the day.

i'll probably update this as more comes to me but the truth is that she's doing her best and her best isn't all that great but that's okay we love her yes girl give us nothing!

THE BETTER - HALF. alara's betrothed — the person she's been best - friends with since they were little. regardless of their engagement, and her activities outside of the relationship, this is someone that alara truly does care about and value. at the end of the day, they've been through a lot together. how much they know or don't know would be entirely up to you. maybe they have feelings, maybe they don't. maybe they're cool with it, maybe they're not. it's all very hand - wavy and entirely up to whoever would want to write it. kept it gender - neutral as well as alara's my bi baby (be who you are !) and loves everyone.

THE SITUATIONSHIP. it was only supposed to be a one - time thing, and each time is supposed to be the last . . . until it isn't. she can't seem to quit them ; they make her feel alive, and when they're together, the future doesn't seem as suffocating. the entire situation is fucked up, she knows, and she has no one to blame but herself for pulling them into this mess. whether the feelings are genuine or not would be entirely up to you, and kept gender - neutral as well because why not !

Sorry for the long wait, I was really distracted and tired that I couldn't draw for a while. That being said, I decided to draw out Medea's ex-boyfriend Jason, the man himself(hurk) inspired by Greek Myth, and her future husband Keiji, who is a total sweetheart.

I kept talking about Medea's love life during Part 3 and 4, so why not give them an appearance?

Jason Lennon (ジェイソンレノン Jeison Renon), was a tertiary antagonist during "Stardust Crusaders". Jason was born in New York City to a fairly wealthy family.

He and his parents moved to California for a fresh start and became best friends and later childhood sweethearts with Medea King. But despite his well off life, he was secretly jealous of Joseph Joestar for being more wealthy and influential than him, eventually transforming into envy, and would do just about anything to be in the old man's position.

Medea protests that he didn't need Joseph's position to be happy and should be grateful with what he had, although claiming that she's right, he began to secretly resent Medea, believing that she doesn't understand his insecurities and started to slowly distance himself from her, even going as far as to cheat on her with his classmate Glauce Ono behind her back.

The fallout upon discovering this transgression resulted in Jason getting battered by Medea and her Stand, as well as her being forced to live with her grandparents in Cork, Ireland to escape his and his family's wrath.

A year later, he physically recovered and joined the SPW Foundation as an intern, he soon joins the Joestar group at Hong Kong as a sailor for hire in hopes of finding a way to kill Joseph, he was the only sailor to survive the group's encounter with [Strength] but was traumatized by the experience.

It was during the group's stay in Malaysia's capital that his ex-lover Medea, now one of DIO's servants, tracks him down and finally had her revenge with him by humiliating and almost killing him in front of Joseph with her Stand's poison, damaging one of his kidneys and getting him arrested by the SPW Foundation, this ruined his chances of ever overthrowing Joseph for his money. He was last seen being disowned by his parents for his crimes.

His current whereabouts are unknown.

Status: Unknown ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Keiji Tachibana (橘圭司 Tachibana Keiji), is a secondary protagonist during "Diamond is Unbreakable". He's an easygoing and cheery young man who works at the Sun Mart as an employee.

He was born and raised in a Shinto household along with his older sister Yuna to his mother Sachiko Tachibana, his father, who used to be Morioh's most renowned Priest, died of a rare form of Cancer while Keiji was just a teenager.

In late-January 1989, he meets a depressed and guilt-ridden Medea King who had recently arrived to Japan after the events of "Stardust Crusaders". After hearing her story, he felt pity for the young woman and convinced his mother to give her shelter, Sachiko accepted under the condition that Medea pulls her weight around the house.

At some point he learned that Medea has a Stand and welcomes them into the family.

Over the next few years, the two became close friends and later lovers(much to Sachiko's irritation due to Medea being a foreigner). Eventually they got married and sired a daughter named "Noriko" after Medea's late friend(whom Keiji later found out was the Kakyoins' deceased son Noriaki).

In 1999, the mart he worked at got held up by a man being possessed by Angelo's Stand, [Aqua Necklace], with one of his co-workers getting held hostage. Thankfully he and the employee were rescued by Josuke Higashikata and his Stand, [Crazy Diamond].

He and his family would soon get caught up in more events caused by various Stand users, one of them being the infamous serial killer: Yoshikage Kira and his Stand, [Killer Queen].

He's one of the few non-Stand users to be aware of the Stands' existance and purpose, seeing them as gifts by the gods due to his family's spiritual background.

Luckyy19 Intro!

I’ve had this blog for a little while and always wanted to do an intro, but I don’t like giving out info that could be used to identify me irl. However, if I want to get to know more writeblrs, it seems only fair that I say something. So:

I’m in my early 20s

I’m a college student studying English and Classics

I go by she/her

I’m heteroromantic asexual

I started writing when I was like 9 but didn’t actually write something that could be considered close to a novel until I was 14. It was very bad.

I’m not very good at social media and I’m a very private person online. I don’t post all that frequently and Tumblr is the only social media I have so if you wanted to find me somewhere else, you're SOL.

I have an ao3 account where I posted some Buffy fics a few years ago, although I’m not a big fan of them anymore.

This blog is specifically dedicated to my writing, writing memes, and the occasional screaming about books/general bookish opinions. I haven't had anything published yet (hopefully that will be coming in the next few years!). My current projects include:

The Golden & the Damned Duology: a retelling of a German epic following a princess told her true love will die, the dragon slayer prince that wins her heart, the princess’s older brother and his reluctant wife, and the way their relationships with each other lead to tragedy. The first book, The Song of the Golden & the Damned, is written and currently being looked over by friends, with a query letter in the works. The second book is currently in progress.

The Feathered Wings Series: a fantasy series about a teenage girl born with wings and living with her cousin in Connecticut who learns the truth of her heritage when a strange young woman stumbles into her city. The first book, Feathered Wings & Broken Souls, is currently being revised and the subsequent books are being outlined.

Immortal Glory, Lethal Fate: a retelling of The Iliad set a few years after Golden & the Damned and a few countries south. It looks at what would happen if Helen left with Paris willingly and Hector was just trying to protect his people and his little brother. Instead of being an epic war novel, it follows the romantic and familial relationships between Hector, Paris, Helen, and Andromache. This book is currently in progress.

I have more that are way way way back on the burner but will definitely be moved up as things are finished. These include “Unnamed Supernatural Story,” “The Zodiacs,” and “If We Go Too Far,” which I might reference from time to time as they’re mostly outlined and the characters are fully fleshed out.

One final thing: When I first started writing I was very private with my work and for the most part, I still am. Only in the last few years have I begun to open up and show my writing to people that I know and trust, and whose opinion I care about. As such, I have plans to post snippets from various projects on here eventually, but they’ll be few and far between and I can’t speak for how well written/edited they’ll be. Still, I hope if you hang around, you like what you see!

General magical capabilities: Timothy is really good at the magic he specializes in and really bad at the magic he dosen't. While he prefers to charm the two animal types listed above, he can work with pretty much anything that's not a spider. He's also an expect at transformation and transmutation, and turning his staff into a bleeding-heart baboon is his battle go to move.

■■ Timothy knows the Divine Words "Ha-di" (destroy), "Maw" (water), and "Se-kebeb" (make cold) by heart and uses them whenever he can't Animal Charm himself out of a problem. Although he isn't particularly good at reading Hieroglyphs.

■■■Outside of those two specialities, Timothy can also use water and wind magic, but he's so bad at it that it's like the dollar store version of elemental magic. He can't do anything else lol.

Background

Crazy story really - the day Timothy found the Djed amulet in his locker was the same day some Greek monster snuck into the school to eat some random halfblood.

Before he got to said unnamed halfblood, the monster noticed Timothy could see his true form and attacked him thinking he was prey. A satyr plant at the school saved him, and spirited him away to Camp halfblood without an explanation.

The whole time Timothy was there, everyone and there grandma kept saying "yep, your definitely a child of Athena" and Timothy kept pushing back because his favorite greek god was Poseidon and he took the rivalry thing seriously.

Eventually Mr. D takes a look at him and goes, "i think you might be in the wrong place" and sent him over to Brooklyn. Hilarious right!

Anyway, Timothy spends his time being Felix's found family big brother and having a platonic crush on Carter. Whatever that means.

From day one, Clementine Greenwood was a paradox of conflicting information. During the entirety of her mother Abigail’s (unplanned) pregnancy, she believed she was having a boy, confirmed by the doctors and never second-guessed until Clementine was born. “God heard me and gave me another baby girl,” Abigail told her husband. Abigail had wanted another girl because her first, Gemma, eight years old at that point, had already disappointed her by resisting the Catholic faith she held so close to her heart. Clementine was a do-over. Another chance to create a person in her own image.

But Clementine, even at five years old and starting private Catholic school, was already destined to disappoint her mother eventually. She certainly tried not to — from that age forward, a willful cognitive dissonance began to form like a wall in her mind, making space for two conflicting truths to coexist. In some deep part of herself, she never believed in the god they spoke of in school, or any god at all for that matter. She didn’t believe any of the stories they told, or that miracles were real, and when she watched her teachers and her peers and the priests during mass, transported by their faith, she felt nothing more than a deep and aching loneliness, as if for some reason god or Jesus or some unnameable third thing had forgotten about her. She tried though; as she got older, Clementine forced herself to believe. It didn’t work on a fundamental level, and the guilt would sometimes creep up on her in the middle of night, scaring her nearly into panic attacks, but during the day she shut down her instinct and grasped bravely at straws. Sometimes she even believed she believed.

She was only ten when Gemma moved out. Eight years younger, Clementine’s older sister had babied her as much as their parents did, and when she left she told a very young and very devastated Clementine that she was sorry she had to leave her, but that she simply couldn’t live there anymore without destroying her mental health and sense of self. A ten year old Clementine didn’t understand this, and only began to reflect on it more as she got older.

As a preteen, she began to tell herself that one day god would come to her. This, she found, was easier to believe. That one day, by those same miracles they taught them about in school, the holy spirit would find her and she would stop having to pretend, which became harder and harder as time wore on. The cognitive dissonance grew as she split her time between playing the part and rebelling against it. She would wear her prettiest dress to Sunday services and beg Jesus to come find her, and then at night let a boy from the other school feel her up behind the church.

It was partly her mother’s religious mania that drove Clementine closer to her father, but it wasn’t just that. Her dad was her person. He knew all her favorite things, and he never inadvertently made her feel guilty for her internal struggles the way her mom did. He was a rock in a world that felt horribly unstable. And here was another paradox: Bobby Greenwood was a good father — and he was also a terrible father. What Abigail knew, Gemma suspected, and Clementine had not one single clue about, was the affair Bobby had had before Gemma was born, with a woman in Arizona who got pregnant around the same time as Abigail, and the estranged daughter he’d been sending letters to in secret since then.

In her late teens and early twenties, Clementine began searching for meaning anywhere she could find it. God had still not come to her, and now her comfort thought from her teen years — that he would come eventually — had begun to fade. She looked for it in hobbies that never grew into anything, books of poetry and philosophy that contradicted each other, in relationships that felt shallow and confusing at best, and in sex with strangers that only heightened her sense of existential dread. It was around 20 years old that something occurred to her: perhaps she’d been looking for meaning in all the wrong places. It was not philosophy or literature or religion or even language she needed to look to, but science. If she wanted to understand herself and the people around her, surely understanding humans at a biological level was the true starting point.

And she was good at it, she found. With Gemma’s help, she enrolled herself in community college, received her Associate’s Degree in just under two years, and got accepted into UPenn to finish her degree in biology. There was no career path she had in mind, no ultimate goal beyond understanding how humans and animals and all living things on this planet functioned on an anatomic level. She piled loans on herself with the carelessness of a person who has never shouldered much real responsibility, and whose ability to plan for the future had never been very good.

In early fall of 2022, when Clementine was starting her senior year at UPenn, her father died in a sudden and violent fashion. The police told them he’d been mugged, and that it appeared there had been a struggle over his watch before he was shot. Not even an expensive watch — obviously something with sentimental value. Abigail had long ago surmised that the watch he never took off was something given to him by the Arizona woman, and this not only confirmed it but made her hate him in death. Again, Gemma suspected. And again, Clementine felt only lost and confused. Where in the last few years she’d had some success trying to heal from her religious trauma, this brought it all back again. She found herself on her knees by her bed every night praying for answers, for god to give her a reason for taking her dad, and to forgive her for the intrusive thoughts that kept asking why if one of them had to go, it couldn’t have been her mom.

She’s still reeling from his death, and now, coming to the end of her degree, she doesn’t know anymore if it was worth it, or if she found any of the meaning she was looking for.
