Slashers Love Languages

In which I go over some slashers love languages and why. :) Includes Thomas Hewitt, Michael Myers, Brahms Heelshire, Lester Sinclair, Harry Warden, SoTL and NBC Hannibal.

Thomas Hewitt

Quality Time ,, Thomas loves to spend time with you, whether it’s just by sitting in the same room to even doing the same activities. He just enjoys being around you and mentally pouts whenever he’s forced to move away.

Gift Giving ,, Thomas loves giving gifts to you, small trinkets he’ll find off his victims or around town. He’ll even try to make you some out of scrap metal and debris. He enjoys seeing your face light up whenever he gifted you something. It was a gratifying exchange.

Physical Affection ,, Although Thomas isn’t much of a physical guy, he does enjoy when you hug him or give him small kisses. The actions are always so sweet, it’s hard to not like them. He also enjoys giving affection, enjoying hugging you the most. He feels calm when he holds you, protective even.

Michael Myers

Gift Giving ,, Michael isn’t a man of words or touch, instead, he prefers to show his affection through the form of gift giving. When he’s stalking his victims, he often steals some of their belonging to bring to you, objects he thinks you’ll like.

Quality Time ,, Alongside acts of service, Michael enjoys spending time with you. He likes knowing where you are, being aware of your current status in case anything might change. He doesn’t say this but your presence calms him in ways he’s never been calmed. Its odd for him at first, but he learns to accept it and take it as it is.

Brahms Heelshire

Physical Affection ,, Brahms is a major physical person, always demanding attention in the form of hugs, kisses, or sometimes sex. He’s never been in a relationship before and has been starved of affection growing up, leaving him with a hunger that can rarely be fully satisfied. There is never a moment where Brahms isn’t touching you, even if the touch is small such as a hand gently holding the bottom of your shirt sleeve as he watches you cook.

Words of Affirmation ,, Brahms enjoys receiving words of affirmation. He enjoys being told he’s done something good. However, because he enjoys hearing those words so much, he assumes you would too, leading to him constantly affirming you with anything you do. Even if the action is pointless, Brahms will give you his approval. Even when you’re doing nothing, Brahms will give you his approval. Affirmations will spill from his lips more than they spill from yours.

Quality Time ,, Another love language of Brahms is quality time. He’s always scared that one day you’ll leave so he tries to stay near you as much as possible. He wants to hang out with, love you, for as long he can in case the worst comes to fruition.

Quality Time ,, Hannibal enjoys hanging out with you, speaking and getting to understand how you work. You’ve always been a curios subject for him, one that he wants to study until he knows you from inside to out. Spending time with you is one of the major ways Hannibal is able to accomplish this.

Words of Affirmation ,, Hannibal likes telling you when you’ve done a good job, when you’ve excelled in something you thought against. He also enjoys singing you praises when you’re alone, small things to bring a smile to your face. He likes physical contact but prefers to verbally express his affection to you. After all, words are his strong suit.

Gift Giving ,, Whenever Hannibal kills someone, he’ll save a souvenir for you, one he’ll give to you as a token of his love and appreciation.

Hannibal Lector (SOTL)

Acts of Service ,, Unlike the other Hannibal, this one prefers to provide you services instead of giving gifts. He enjoys helping you relax, taking stress off your shoulders, and more. He feels he needs to help you at time, still being mindful that you’re strong on your own. He wants to see you calm so he’ll provide any service he can to bring that want into play.

Words of Affirmation ,, Similarly to the NBC Hannibal, words of affirmation are a shared trait. Hannibal prefers to both receive and give words of affirmation. He likes to know that the love comes from both sides. If you don’t return his words, he’ll keep bugging you till you do.

Harry Warden

Physical Affection ,, Harry enjoys physical affection as much as anyone else, however, he prefers it in a more domestic setting. He enjoys sleepy cuddles while making breakfast, good morning/goodnight kisses, laying next to you while watching movies, and the gentle kisses he’ll give you on your forehead before he leaves. He likes seeing you happy and you never fail to show your smile when he caresses your skin.

Acts of Service ,, Harry loves to give you massages after you come back from a long day at work. He likes receiving them, however, he enjoys rubbing the stress out of you back more. He doesn’t like the fact you work so hard, wanting to provide from himself. However, due to your circumstances, you’re forced to work till it feels like your back will break. Harry, wanting to provide for you, will massage your back till it feels brand new, no matter how tired his arms get.

Gift Giving ,, Another one of Harry’s love languages is gift giving. He likes gifting you jewelry, especially necklaces because he likes the way it looks against the skin of your neck. He also enjoys the way your face would light up at the new piece, you’re always so happy to wear the jewelry his buys you. He thinks it’s cute the ways your eyes will shine at the jewelry, it brings him joy and causes his heart to swell.

Lester Sinclair

Gift Giving ,, Lester enjoys making little ornaments for you out of the remains of the animals. He’ll make necklaces and charms to hang on your belt. Whenever you wear his gifts, a mixture of pride and love will swell within him at the sight of you appreciating the gifts he crafted for you.

Quality Time ,, Outside of hunting, Lester is a sucker for quiet snuggles. He enjoys laying down with his head in your chest, you’re arms wrapped firmly around him. He likes to know that you’re laying right below him, happy to hold him as he rests his eyes after a long day of hunting. He deeply enjoys it when you rub his back, something that practically gets him purring like a cat.

Physical Affection ,, Lester is a major physical guy, enjoying anything as long as it means he gets to hold you, kiss you, or anything that allows him just to touch you. The mere contact of his skin against yours is enough to calm him. Whenever you move away, he deeply craves your touch until you allow him to touch you again.

Spoilers about the “Inside man” on Netflix and its similarities with SoTL (specifically Hannibal’s character and his relationship with Clarice)

TL;DR: I think they drew inspiration by the movie when it comes to grief’s and Beth’s character and while they are completely different media and cases, they were an enjoyable duo I wish we had more time to see together, because it would have been an interesting concept to explore more (especially if they shared some more common elements with Hannibal and Clarice)

Alright so: lemme tell ya I liked the show. Could have been better? yes. Did I still enjoy it and had a blast? absolutely! That being said: I couldn't help but notice a familiar pattern with Grieff’s Character/Beth and Hannibal/Clarice

Everyone’s keep talking about how Tucci’s Character was Sherlock-ish (well thats what happens when the writer of Sherlock writes more shows ig) but in my eyes he mostly was Hannibal-ish.

Grieff wasn't all that ironic as Sherlock was throughout the show (kinda), and he wasn't trying to ‘show off’ either as Sherlock did. He also didn't solve the cases with the help of some rather deux ex machina clues (like Sherlock did sometimes) He was mostly reversed, stoic, calm, ready to point out the hypocrisies in one’s morals and enjoyed helping Beth discover the clues for her case (don't these things remind you of Hannibal?). Beth is also an ambitious young woman, a journalist who writes about crimes in general, who is dedicated to what she does.

episode 1:

Her first meeting with Grieff had SoTL vibes. His indifference at first, then starting to take a like on her. Her trying to figure out how to ask the right kind of questions but also making sure she's respected and calling him out whenever she feels she should. And when he revealed that he chooses his cases based on ‘moral worth’ feels like he shares a piece of himself (perhaps a more vulnerable one?), smth he wouldn't do unless he knew she was a ‘decent’ human. And as dilon said “you liked it, you talked a lot”, smth that neither of them would do unless they found an interest in the other person

Episode 2:

Episode’s 2 little game of ‘would you rather help your friend or get more material for your job?’ felt smth like Lecter would do too. I didn't expect her to choose the latest but then again, it’s not like they were bffs.

Also her going all around searching for clues with him on the phone, directing her and being pleased when she finds the solution? definitely smth Lecter would do to, had he being in prison in 2022 and not in the 80′s. And again, I enjoyed their banter. And their little talk at the end, him making fun of her moral codes while she just saw the woman who was the murderer running away?? I found it funny tbh

Episode 3:

Morag’s speech during ep 3 was also a nice touch. Making sure Beth never forgets that after all these, Grieff is a monster (Just like what everyone kept telling to Clarice, both the media and her closer environment). Her determination to continue her job/finding Janice im sure pleased Grieff (as for why he wanted to listen to her reaction on the phone: the man loves playing games)

Episode 4:

Episode’s 4 opening scene has similar vibes, explaining hard to grasp concepts in a simpler way. And him sending the men of his ex father-in-law to the vicar’s house, in a pretence he had confessed where he had hidden his wife’s head, so he could help Beth? ingenious and Lecter should take some notes tbh

On the whole:

While I recognise this was not 100% intended by Moffat, I would like to believe he drew some inspo by SoTL and Hannibal’s relationship with Clarice.

It was obvious they were never meant to be like them (let alone how their relationship developed in the Hannibal book) but, for sure it felt refreshing to watch something that shared some common clues with one of my favourite couples in media. Especially with a couple we are not going to watch together in the big screen because of copyright issues...

i think when it comes to learning a language it's better to learn smth fun than smth u "should" i never was able to get into spanish. and theres no real reason for me to learn lithuanian but its fun ! gl w danish !!

if you do end up reading the books i'll have to warn you of p much every trigger warning on earth ? thomas harris managed to trigger me on things i didn't even know could be a problem. so be safe out there. i haven't watched SOTL in a way that matters so i can't say anything about it (i know) or hannibal rising for that matter (havent even read the book version of that) but manhunter is also another hannibal i love ! he's in it for 8 minutes though. up to you if thats worth it. feed the book notes ! :) also i wouldnt be able to judge u for ur handwriting ! i have severe dysgraphia so i understand how it is sometimes. i can't promise id be able to read it though. (also unrelated and a bit late but if you want to share the italian will/hanna nicknames i think i'd love that knowledge)

my favorite part about NBC lecter is definitely his self control. his need for control actually. and to me the most important part about lecter is his survivability. that's why to me its always funny to think "oh old man needs his fancy silk and fine dinners, he'd crumble like feta if he didn't have them" but if this turns into serious analysis of his character then its glossing over the fact that hannibal lecter has reached almost perfect ataraxia ? like, he has perfect control at all times. he has control over the situation (his constant manipulation and schemes) but if the situation slips from him (getting tied up christ style and slashed at the wrists, getting kidnapped and tied up in the stables), then it doesn't matter, he still has control. because... he doesn't care ! hannibal doesn't lose his shit pulling his hair out crying screaming if his plans don't go according to plan because he's reached perfect control over his emotions. therefore he doesn't care if things go wrong, it's just another interesting thing happening in his life. if he doesn't allow himself to feel upset, if he doesn't allow himself to freak out over the loss of control, then he's never lost control in the first place, he can't get traumatized, and it's like nothing bad happened. that's why i think any upset he might have felt over the assassination attempt was played up/acted out so he could lure alana (who is attracted to pathetic men in need of fixing like a moth to the light). thats also why i think hannibal couldn't have suffered THAT much from being in jail for three years because... idk like sure it cost him something, it cost him his freedom and everything. freedom from murder. but the fact he gave it up willingly is so much more important to who hannibal lecter is - someone who will never be in a traumatic situation ever again and never get hurt again - than any luxury he might have had when he was free and has now lost. i think in comparison the s2 finale was more of a loss of control albeit partial and i think it affected him more negatively. what are ur thoughts

Okay, so I actually have my notes out, because I am an absolute little gremlin. And you're right about the sense of control over his emotions. When he had a noose around his neck he was still cracking jokes. And you're also right about playing up the trauma. If you watch him with Jack, he has his regular collar, buttoned all the way up with a tie. With Alana he wears the shirts open with a scarf to cover up the bruises that may or may not still be there. He acts like the idea of having something constricting around his neck is unappealing, but still steps into his tailored suits and ties a scarf around his neck anyways. Its a very shallow and easily seen through disguise (bruises from a noose would be much high up his neck).

When he was in the straight jacket at the pig pen he only had eyes for Will. Understanding that despite the fact that Will could easily dispose of him, it is still not the reckoning he was promised. So its only a matter of time until that happens. Its part of the reason I think he ledt Will unconscious while abducting Mason. A lot of season 2 is about the pull between Will and Hannibal I think.

The culmination of that tug of war leads to the first time that Hannibal is let down. It was a loss of control over his emotions, after all, one cannot help with who they fall in love with. He thought that Will would join his side, or kill him. Instead he had to deal with Jack Crawford in his kitchen. Hannibal smelled the betrayal on Will’s skin and gave him a choice. But what Hannibal couldn't see was Will trying to sort out his affairs, asking Freddie to not write about Abigail, to only write about him. I think Will was getting ready to leave with him, but unfortunately due to Jack it was taken from him in the form of a knife wound. Gutting him in the literal sense compared to the emotional gutting Hannibal received.

I think the second time he is let down is around the time that Will decides that he doesn't want to know where Hannibal is. Will went to forgive Hannibal, to see if he could love him, even if he wasn't aware of the love he carried just yet. And he was met with a bone saw and the promise of having his brain eaten. Will had enough, but Hannibal thought they could move on from it. I think that Hannibal knew that despite the fact that Will said he was cutting ties, that he didn't mean it. It's really hard to tell, but Will isn't making eye contact. And I think that's really telling.

I think that part of the reason that Hannibal gives himself up in front of Will is to show that he doesn't need all the trappings, just Will's regard. Its a cheap shot, but it clearly works. He seems to grow into his ability to roll with how his love for Will makes him feel. Reveling in the unpredictable nature of it and the man who causes it. I do believe Hannibal when he said he has found Will in his mind palace, victorious. Even if its just a shade of the man he desires. Which is why I agree that the S2 finale was much more rife with trauma for them both.

Movies/etc I've already seen:

The Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary edition

Like a lot of people, I watched a good chunk of musicals from The Show Must Go On!'s youtube channel. This, Cats and War of the Worlds are a must watch. I've been itching for a rewatch of Phantom, and now I can scratch that itch, whenever. Really good, highly recommend.

Goodfellas

The way this is one of my favorite movies, and it's taken me this long to get a copy of it?!?! I'm surprised at myself, honestly. If you enjoy/are fascinated by true crime, organized crime, mob stories, and wanna actually feel bad for a snitch for once in your life, this is the movie. One of the things I appreciate is how they will on occasion cut to Henry's wife's POV, and help add context as to why she stayed.

Predator

This is one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. It's also a solid as hell franchise, with damn near every entry being gold. The first movie's a great example of two stories in one; war buddies reuniting in the first half, and then getting hunted down in the second half. It's just... so good.

[REC]

I've done a rewatch reaction recently, and I'm so fucking thrilled to have it on DVD, now. One of the best found-footage horror movies, ever. Of all time. So fucking good.

Hereditary

Funny thing about this; I watched the edited version of this movie for free on youtube, and while I wanna see this, the R-rated version, the edited version is still a gut punch. Went into it blind, it's fantastic.

My Bloody Valentine

The original!! From the 80s!! I got to see it in theatres, a couple of years ago, and it's so fun to watch with a crowd.

The Martian

I read the book earlier this year, and it's SO GOOD, I cannot stress enough, go read it. Just watched this, this morning, and the movie's a great adaptation, too, and solidifies a couple of things; Mark Watney is one of the best, most sympathetic protagonists, period, and Matt Damon can act his ass off by himself.

Cape Fear

I'm on a Scorsese kick. Going into it mostly blind.

Mean Streets

Because I wanna know what all the hype is about, and to drool over Keitel.

Manhunter

The first film featuring Hannibal Lecter. This has been on my to watch list for so long, is hard to find on streaming, and is said to be better that Silence of the Lambs. Considering SotL is one of my favorite movies of all time, we shall see. I have read the book, Red Dragon, and seen the movie of the same name, so we'll see.

Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell

When I tell you I've been looking for this album for the past couple of years. How I've listened to it so many times on youtube, alone. How it's one of my favorite albums of all time, it's so fucking good, please, please, please go do yourself a favor and take a listen, I'm begging you. Standout track that doesn't get nearly enough love (they all deserve love) is All Revved Up with No Place to Go. This was literally the last thing I saw when I was heading to checkout, is easily the most expensive thing I bought, but the price didn't matter because of that sweet satisfaction of finding something cool as hell out in the wild, I swear to god there's no better feeling.

I havent heard Daoko in years (only actually listened to like. two tracks back then) and it's as whispery and colorful as ever. ANYWAY the fact i imagined mvs in my head means i do in fact have: Thoughts

I usually dislike the asmr whispery discography but i greatly appreciate the song rec. Yume Miteta no Atashi sounded like SOTL (personaQ) at some part which I thought was a banger. As with any sort of lyrics, I like to interpret them in a more general and platonic sense so any sort of subtext I don't really take into account or recognize at all in general does that make sense. i like blorbo lore and I'll do anything to pin down the most absurd dots to connect to in my absolutely cluttered conspiracy board in my brain

mhm yeah love the identity crisis vibes and wanting change despite the belief and/or the actual lack of humanity in oneself. The want to learn about others and become human just to fit into a world you think you'd be better off in because of what you've seen and experienced in some sort of way. Creating a "virtual world" you stick yourself to hide in which collapses under the light of the truth and "reality" you cant seem to distinguish anymore from that you've made. Desperately trying to rebuild it on your own while still having that godforsaken desire to be with others, proving the point that the humanity within you is to be social and live and not simply survive. Opening up and getting hurt though that's the only way to fulfill your own wishes you yourself don't understand or think is absurd due to the environment you've lived in this whole time with the assigned duty you've had since birth as you're placed into the world's unspoken hierarchical status to accomplish something. Wanting to be felt—wanting the "real" self to be felt. To love and be loved at the cost of the world collapsing. This song is literally called "lonely god" (<- is purposely talking about this as vaguely as possible because it also applies to other characters I am very correct about)

yeah that first line also applies to Yume Miteta no Atashi (The Me who Dreamed). Living a constant routine and trying to steer off the train's rails to live the wish to try something different with those that you've met and have their own paths in life they can change than stick to a fate so mundane and predictable and possibly inhuman. Wanting to change and be different and fit in a world where all the people you want to connect to each other are so unique and are breathing and living and sparkling. unlike you. Being so happy at the simple fact to have met others and saying "I am not alone." Yet stuck following a flowchart where words fall out of your mouth to meet some supposedly world altering and fulfilling goal. Considering every as insufficient because it doesn't sate a desire that was meant to be fulfilled. Was that just selfishness? Self righteousness? Just to desire something? That a dream will stay stuck as a dream because it was something "impossible." Just wanting to be liked and loved and be with others and feeling that glint of acceptance spark the thought of such a dream in the first place.

I became a fannibal almost 2 yrs later after Hannibal got cancelled. I was 15 then, when it was airing, and since I am Indian, not all american broadcasting agency were (still is) accessible here. So I never knew the real scenario why it got cancelled. Like I know, how Hannibal is so hugely popular, termed as 'Cult classic' (i'm kinda proud of how our fandom is so glorified🤭). But if it is so popular how did it got cancel due to 'low ratings/viewership' of all reasons. I try to conclude that Hannibal is 'much ahead of its time'. Is it?

And do you think Hannibal will get a renewal! While I seriously want it, I don't think its possible. As much as I love Bryan, I feel and must say, he lies a lot to hold the fandom. He's like a king of giving hopes!

Yes, in many ways, 'Hannibal' was ahead of its time. The ratings were indeed the biggest problem. 'Hannibal' was eating finances since it's not a cheap show, but it was bringing in very little. Its ratings were abysmal and they were climbing down, down, and down every season. S1 had 2.90 million viewers on average; S2 had 2.54; S3 had just 1.31. NBC could no longer support it. But why were the ratings so low? There are many reasons for it.

First of all, it was on NBC, which isn't the platform that the target audience of 'Hannibal' frequents. The show has a slow pacing; it's artistic to the point of being pretentious, which is not for everyone; it has no 'hero', telling a love story of two male anti-heroes instead; it's focused largely on character development but was advertised as crime procedural, which attracted the wrong audience. This is actually a huge issue, in my opinion. Even now, when you go read descriptions of seasons or episodes online, it's all wrong. I mean, just look at IMDB page. The mentioned genres: crime, drama, horror. You cannot describe this show without "dark romance" genre. It's full of surrealism and gothic, it's not your average crime show. Then let's look at the offered summary: "Explores the early relationship between renowned psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter and a young FBI criminal profiler who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers."

No! No, it doesn't explore the "early" relationship - it's not a prequel to anything, it's its own universe. Will's ability to empathize with serial killers is far from being his main descriptor.

As long as 'Hannibal' is marketed as a prequel to SOTL, a crime drama and a procedural, it'll never get enough popularity to become a mainstream show. People who love procedurals watch it and dislike it because it's too weird for their tastes; people who love dark romance and blood-soaked operas ignore it because they have no idea what it's really about.

I actually made a thread once with my proposed summaries for the seasons, you can check it and other people's replies here if you want.

Apart from this, the show is incredibly complex, so it's a bad fit for viewers who expect everything to be explained clearly; it's so character-driven than if you miss one episode, you might lose the point. I think all these nuances contributed to the current situation - it's just a very niche show, and I don't think it'll be renewed. Bryan genuinely wants to and he tries, but if it hasn't happened yet, I doubt the situation will change.

To start off with, a feeding tube is a tube entered through the nasal or abdominal region of the body to supply nutrients for people who cannot get enough through eating alone. Feeding tubes may be uncomfortable or even painful at first, but that may be fixed through adjustments. Feeding tubes are a result of many disorders occurring within the gastrointestinal region. They may also be a result of neck or throat cancer, throat surgery, and anything that may restrict or eliminate the process of swallowing food via mouth.

Will initially be confused about what a feeding tube it, worry quickly settling in. However, once you explain it to him and tell him you’re alright, he’ll calm down.

Will treat you like a fragile piece of glass even though you have told him you feel fine, you just need a little extra help.

Will also ask a lot of questions in his own way through gentle touches and nudges.

Y’all I’ve got things to say about CBS Clarice.

Totally loved that they included more stuff from the books that you didn’t necessarily see in SOTL

ARDELIA FREAKING MAPP! I was so exited to see her, she wasn’t included in the Hannibal film and was barely used in SOTL!

The actress for Clarice did an awesome job. Like honestly matched pretty well with Jodie Foster’s, and in my opinion didn’t really have to try that hard to be better than Julianne Moore.

Really awesome referencing to the main man, Hannibal Lecter, considering CBS doesn’t legally own rights to his character so he can’t be directly mentioned or depicted on the show

However, it isn’t all great

The show focuses on Clarice having PTSD and being severely traumatized by the events of SOTL. When the whole point was her saving Catherine was a resolution of childhood trauma

Wasn’t a fan of Chatherine Martin’s depiction. I’m not a fan of the fact that they stripped this girl down to almost nothing. Yes she’s should be traumatized by what happened, but remember this is the same girl who refused to let go of precious when leaving the crime scene, and put up a hell of a fight in captivity.

And my biggest concern is the fact that Clarice is supposed to be this perfect fit for vicap. Hannibal (the book/film) practically happens because her career goes on a steady decline after graduating. By the time the events of Hannibal rolls around she’s not well liked by the press/public because she can’t live up to the standards set for her, and issues of being a woman in a mans world. The first episode of CBS Clarice seems like it’s setting up for her to become this star agent. Which for me is a bit concerning

I didn’t hate the first episode but I’m not overly thrilled either. Will I still watch next week’s episode? Yup.

Hello again, sorry I was at a wedding last night trying to wrangle small children that aren't mine.

My notes have like insightful little quips and then bullshit like: "Fucking monster. Licked a newspaper." Like, ah yes. They're going to give the cannibal glue. No, no they won't. But he sure did lick that newspaper for his weird little scrapbook.

I'm not going to lie, the reason I've actually thought about watching Manhunter is cause of you. My one friend told me the movie isn't very good (I'm notoriously bad at watching bad films) but I wanted to be able to interact with your art for those things because I like your art so much. Also now that I am an unhinged Hannibal fan, he got me to watch Hannibal Rising (i think I told him I wanted my time and money back), SOTL and Red Dragon. My first thought when seeing Norton as Will was "Really? The fight club guy?" But i remember so little of the film other than 'wow, Freddie Lounds is a dick whether he has one or not' and 'hehehe exercise leash'. And then with SOTL I was like "wow, good thing all these characters appear to be the pinnacle of mental health." But they sure didn't seep into my brain. I might try watching them again. But I def want to watch Manhunter. Give me insane. I'm down for the sickness (brain rot).

Also, give me the fan designs. I'm still a partial Witcher fan, so I love seeing the book designs people come up with. I love that for people! I love that for me!

The weird thing about Hannibal's feelings is that he's so blasé about them. I think at first he saw Will, and was intrigued about the potential of being seen. But clearly it wasn't the superpower it was practically claimed to be. After all, Will looked him dead in the eyes and didn't see the creature behind the veil. But maybe Hannibal saw something else in those eyes that wouldn't settle. Like a feral animal curled into itself, eyes darting around, looking for the best and quickest exit. Unlike when he met Lass, who was hardworking and smart, he kept her because of that intelligence. Will had something, but he wasn't sure what. And I think that's why when he says he was curious about what Will would have done with Hobbs when he had placed that phone call, I believe him. Will was either going to be another of Jack's bloodhounds stolen from under his nose, or he was going to be something else. I think that Hannibal struggles with some form of depression, the surface level attachments to his creature comforts, so the boredom is stifling. Hannibal himself is so incredibly nuanced and shifts from "Will is my friend" to "Guess I have to eat him" in the same conversation. I don't think Will was ever safe from Hannibal's knife. At least not until like S3 finale. The issue with an emotion you're not used to is its volatile, and we can see that in how Hannibal talks of Will and to Will. I do think that he joined Jack in helping to groom Will to kill himself, because it would be a worthy challenge.

I know some of the Fandom elevate Will to a god-adjacent status in Hannibal's eyes. But again, I think that comes and goes. I think there are moments where Hannibal looks at Will and sees the God of Righteous Fury, and other times he sees the man who is ruining his life. Hannibal's body language and facial expressions are all very neutral (props to Mads Mikkelsen for that), so you have to watch his eyes and mouth for the smallest flickers. And they are small. Matthew Brown was a fool and a tool, but he was right about the eyes.

NBC Hannibal's past is very patchwork-y but from what I could scrape together he would have stopped speaking Lithuanian around the time he was mute, would have shifted into at least understanding or attempting to understand Russian (soviet occupied Lithuania) before he fled to France. In France he was still a mute. NBC specifically said his Uncle Robertus took him in at 16. Boarding school. So we can assume he learned French in boarding school. Japanese would have been next up, Lady Murasaki and Chiyoh would have used it to speak to each other, both so far from home, it would have helped ease the homesickness. So I do believe Hannibal would have learned Japanese. But Japanese would be tied to another heartbreak (like Lithuanian) when Murasaki sends Hannibal away after he refuses to stop stabbing people. He goes to his mother's homeland of Italy, and eventually settles in Florence, where he learns Italian and comes to grow into the man we know today. So that's why I advocated hard for Italian nicknames. And why I think that language for Hannibal is important, but also an insane field filled with landmines.

I’m Pretty Sure Hannibal Has Permanently Destroyed Me (But I’m Not Mad)

Alright so this has a few parts to it so bear with me but I’m watching Hannibal naturally because I’m past Will’s time at BSHCI to find more of our favorite moments that I genuinely love finding so I’m on a thought train and a bit high.

So I was video-chilling with some of my friends the other day about to watch a horror movie, but before that we were all catching up. So each of us goes and it gets to me, so I mention that I’m finally releasing the emotions and thoughts I’ve suppressed in me for way too long here and that it’s been pretty dope so far having y’all around. So I mention the blending in of Clannigram on the platform which gets us talking about Clarice, and I’ll admit I’m curious as how the story of the show, being set one year after SOTL but not able to say our favorite Doctor’s name, is going to blend and prepare for Clarice’s later story in Hannibal whether they cover that book or not. Now, luckily I haven’t mentioned any spoilers which I’m very proud of, here’s where my friends mention they’ve not read the books nor seen the film which as we know changed Clarice’s ending with Hannibal. So I just. . . stop, mid-sentence. One asks what’s up, and I’m just. . . I said “we need to stop talking about this. If we talk about this I will start on Clarice, which will lead to Hannibal, which will lead to the show, and we all know how that would go.” At which point all of us shut up and picked a horror movie.

The second thing is stupid, but I was at the dispensary yesterday and there’s this brand called WYLD that uses stag horns as it’s logo you know where this is going. So first thing is a staff member has a lanyard that has the horns in a rainbow heart, I keep my chill. We get up to the counter, and there’s more WYLD stuff. Wood carved logo, different products, but this last thing was the one that was full blown Hannibal vibes. A WYLD card that had the black horns surrounded by beautiful red and purple elderberries, leaves, and a gorgeous cardstock background with a moon in the clear sky. I was like. . . shit, I’m permanently lost.

There’s been a bunch more times where things people say or do or so many other things remind me of Hannibal, so yeah. Pretty sure Hannibal has permanently destroyed my brain, but I’m not that mad about it!

So, I’m late, late, late for the Hannibal train. I put off watching it for a long time because SotL traumatized the FRICK out of me as a child. I finally binged the whole series in like three days earlier this year. At this point, I really really really WISH I could get into the sexy bloodsport that is Hannibal/Will, and in general that kind of dynamic is really appealing to me. But for whatever reason I just can’t! I think maybe I’m more than a little intimidated by the idea of trying to do any amount of believable justice to a depiction of a well-read clinician who is also a resourceful serial murderer? But honestly, the reason why I just can’t go there remains a mystery to me.

Gosh, I’m not sure if I can! I’m pleased as punch with my main! Keeps me guessing, keeps me entertained, keeps me thinking, keeps me writing. And folks are just so dang FUNNY. Maybe I’ll reflect on this in a year or so and have an entirely different answer, but for now, I’m living it up in my fandom of choice!

What are your favorite movies and TV shows outside of SW? I’m looking for new things to watch since SW was so disappointing

My tastes are pretty eclectic, so I will stick to just things that are either similar to sw or are in the reylo-esque romance wheelhouse and have happy endings:

Chuck. It is a goofy, light-hearted action-adventure show with extremely endearing characters and a very prominent central romance (seriously, heavy romance and there is a lot of payoff for it, you will be FED- it's kind of slow burn but also shockingly NOT slow burn, they are deep into it pretty much immediately). The main couple is the classic Stoic Badass gradually softened by an innocent they have to protect who is a liability in battle but full of the Power of Heart. Chuck is The Heart btw. He is of that vanishingly rare male Beauty (of B&tB) type. He's incredibly generous and open, Sarah is prickly and closed-off. It is Quality. Very much a gender-swap of your typical cliche anime couple lol. I would recommend stopping at the mid-season finale in season 4, because it's downhill from there. The beginning of season 3 is very rough, but it's definitely worth it to stay for the back half, imo. There are several great endings to choose from before things go to shit, so we don't need to talk about the finale. Probably the most tonally similar to SW thing possible without being high/space fantasy. More humour, more silly, but definitely has a spiritual kinship. Has the best THE BEST 'secret revealed' scenes I have ever seen in anything. If you're into that and were hoping for that in ep IX, you need to watch Chuck.

The Shop Around the Corner. 1940 romance/drama film. You've Got Mail is a remake of it. Jimmy Stewart being profoundly adorable, Frank Morgan (aka the Wizard of Oz), various amusing side characters, and an absolutely deathless double blind 'secretly in love with the workplace nemesis' plot that can and probably has been a great reylo AU.

Mirromask. Fantasy/coming-of-age film. Touted as a 'spiritual successor' to Labyrinth by the filmmakers (one of whom is Neil Gaiman) and let me tell you, that is extremely apt. Beautiful, magical, laden with symbolism and Mask Discourse, and has a great ship. I quote it regularly.

Speaking of which, I'm sure you've seen Labyrinth? If you haven't seen Labyrinth, drop everything and watch Labyrinth.

Legend (the Ridley Scott director's cut, not the theatrical cut). Sumptuous fairy tale, runs on proper fairy tale logic, stunning to look at and overall captivating. Tim Curry. Tim Curry as a lonely tragic lord of darkness who tries to seduce the heroine and has drippingly overwrought monologues.

Howl's Moving Castle. Fairy tale adventure/romance film. Beautifully animated, has the ending you want.

The Silence of the Lambs. Thriller/drama film. Actual masterpiece. Use it as a gateway drug to read the books and rejoice that Clannibal is canon and it is spectacular. Just SotL and Hannibal, you don't need to read the other two. Stan Clarice Starling and revel in that ending. Most triumphant 'villain'/heroine ship of all time (he is not technically a villain but for shorthand's sake).

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Terry Gilliam 1988 fantasy/adventure film. THE TRIUMPH OF IDEALISM OVER CYNICS I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW HEALING IT WAS TO WATCH AFTER THE TROS BULLSHIT HIT. Jonathan Pryce's spiritual villain is basically Chris Terrio and it is cathartic to see imagination and sentiment conquer him.

Sabrina. 1995 romance film. Modern fairy tale with Harrison Ford. Rejecting what you thought you wanted all your life for the thing you actually need, growing up but still believing in magic, beautiful character development across all the leads. Could be (and is irrc) a fantastic reylo AU.

The Scarlet Pimpernel. 1934 adventure film. High romance, secret identities, play-acting, people who aren't at all what they appear to be, falling in love with your own spouse, Big Heroism, guile and wit and audacity. It makes me do little kicks like a happy baby. This is one of the 3-5 films constantly tied for my favourite film of all time. There is a good quality rip free on youtube. Watch it and fall in love with Leslie Howard (this is possibly my favourite acting performance of all time).

Oh, related note. Pygmalion 1938 or My Fair Lady. (The musical is based on this film and borrows from it heavily, including its much more romantic ending compared to the original play.)

The Mummy. 1999 action/adventure/romance film. Very tonally similar to sw. A fucking great time, A+ characters.

EVER AFTER. 1998 romance film. The flawless and perfect and best ever Cinderella adaptation. This is the most satisfying film in history, maybe, the ending is so good it is amazing it exists. Also, it has Richard O'Brien being slimy. Huge selling point. Grapples with identity and stewardship, is brilliant.

Fruits Basket. drama/romance anime. I haven't watched the new version yet, but it's following the manga so I know the story. The original anime didn't do the whole plot (because they caught up with the source material) but it's wonderful and I still recommend it. The central ship is (spoiler.........) a B&tB type where we eventually discover the main love interest both feels like a figurative monster and turns into a literal monster. He has an incredible speech about his relationship with people's fear, it makes me weep. I called the endgame from the first episode and always thought it was obvious, but there is a red herring love triangle dynamic. It's really not annoying, though, because it is a red herring. (I hate love triangles)

I am Dragon. Russian monster romance film. Beautiful, simple fable with a really great heroine.

Jane Eyre. 1943 Gothic Romance film. It's Jane Eyre, byronic hero x sensible heroine love story with much atmosphere and Gothic drama. I stan this version because I am an Orson Welles fangirl and I'm also not convinced it can be improved upon. Elizabeth Taylor's film debut btw.

Hellboy. 2004 action/adventure/romance film. Defying destiny, reconciling identity, monster romance. The complete package and a great time. Tonally similar to SW and probably thematically closest to it out of this whole list. Don't watch the sequel.

Beauty and the Beast 1987 tv series. Exactly what it says on the tin. Deals with the classic B&tB themes, but in a different way. He's not cursed and will never transform into an ordinary man. The first season is very episodic and 'case of the week', but the second season gets more into character drama. It's dated, but if you give it a chance you can get past some of the cheese factor and it's really a unique experience. Its concerns are SO atypical that it feels like something fandom would make rather than a mainstream network show. It was so massively, insanely popular with women at the time that a record of Vincent (the beast) reading poetry topped the album charts. Also Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. Stop at season two. Point of interest: George RR Martin wrote for this show.

Stargate (the movie not the series) sci-fi fantasy about a nerdy guy who accidentally a hero.

Possession. 2009... mystery/supernatural/romance. Okay. This is a whole thing. Lee Pace and Sarah Michelle Gellar. It's based on a Korean film I've never been able to find for some reason, but being Hollywood they ruined the romanticism and nuance of the original in the theatrical cut to make a shitty punative ending. However. If you buy it on dvd and go to the alternate ending (which follows the original story) with around 20 minutes left (scene after Lee Pace's character wakes from a bad dream-go to deleted scenes and select the alternate ending), you will get a very, very interesting character study/thriller/redemption about sincerity within deception, compassion, and a major question about second chances with a positive answer. It's kind of dark and kind of astonishingly idealistic at the same time. The heroine makes a very powerful choice, twice over. It's fascinating. If you're into the conflicted and uncertain period in reylo, the part where he is most ambiguous, and you wanted more of that and much darker shades to it, you might be really into this. Also, it should be noted, there is a MASSIVE height difference and they show it off. The film is flawed (and the seams show on the Hollywood rewrite) but idk, it's fascinating. Shocking to me that they even got to shoot the original ending. It is pretty balls to the wall with its themes on forgiveness.

I would recommend getting into kdramas because there is a wealth of female-gaze tropey amazing content, but always check the ending before getting invested. My all-time fave is the 1st Shop of Coffee Prince, but it's not sw related at all lmao. It has a happy ending with all the elements you'd want, but it's not satisfying in execution, so that's it's major flaw and I find that pretty common with kdramas. One that is maybe more relevant is My Love from Another Star, which has a hero who is a little bit like Ben in personality. The heroine isn't my favourite, though. It does have a decent ending.

Oh yeah- brain fart. Kurosawa films and classic westerns were both very influential on SW. Or you can combine both and watch The Magnificent Seven.
