not saying this to be snobby or anything but genuinely my default idea of what the phrase "video games" means is so fundamentally removed from average people's perception of a "gamer". like someone says they're a gamer and my first thought is "oh sweet me too! i wonder what stories theyve been partaking in lately. maybe some murder mystery vns, or a psychological horror jrpg?" and then they're like "yeah im top class in fortnite/halo/guilty gear/whatever storyless online competitive shooter/fighting game" and im like. oh right. i. forgot those are video games too.

#She's so cute <3 #WPP #Portal #Ellen McLain #If you haven't played through the audio commentary I would Absolutely recommend it it is So fun #I clicked out of curiosity - kind of just expecting like a movie's audio commentary y'know? Like a video that highlighted specific scenes #No it's just the whole game again but with trivia pop-ups! I love that!! #It reminded me so much of like trivia track or the pop up fun facts from special editions of movies I would watch as a kid #But you can play through them!! You have to click on them and they spin! I love that!!! #I always love hearing the design and development process - fascinating how the playtesters reacted to this new game! #We take it for granted now but yeah I imagine it would've been very confusing at the time #And I was like ''Well it was such a small team and Ms. McLain was such a large part of it - surely she'll have a few bubbles?'' #She does lol - as soon as I got to her first one (it was a slow burn! They buried the lead with her lol I'm already invested!) I had to go #I saved-quit the game out of sheer excitement and giddiness lol I had to sleep on it before I was ready to come back #It is so cool to hear her natural voice ah <3 And the kinds of direction she was given! Other bubbles also talk about her vocal direction :) #Very cool! The thing about mean rivals is that like there's kinda a reason we stop having them the second the plots started getting world-ending in scope and that's because you do not have time to deal with some whiny asshole who you've beaten over and over again's shit when a space chinchilla is about to suffocate everyone in the region

Like if they're a dick to you the entire way through they quickly become all bark and no bite because narratively they're going to keep losing to you, and again progressively destroying the ego of a small child is second to whatever this year's eldritch abomination is (and if they went so far as to help the eldritch abomination it raises questions about why they're friendly enough to battle you in the post game).

So like. It's simpler if they're just nice? And have arcs where the fact that they keep losing to you is the point? Your rival isn't the final boss anymore you don't have to build up to finally being able to defeat them for good (except not really) (I guess Hau in USUM arguably but LBR the final boss is Ultra Necrozma)

Like I guess I get annoyed when people don't acknowledge there's a point to how the rivals have been handled since gen 3. You don't have to like it per se but there's a reason the rivals are like this and it's not just the devs don't want to upset little kids.

The fact that the adults care about your safety on the other hand...

#I'd have to go play through it properly but like. the plot of Gen I is really weak and for narrative sake I think we should not be holding #ourselves to its tropes #(i don't say this to be disparaging to Gen I I respect those games so much #I mostly say it to like make a point) #also like the rivals didn't start exclusively choosing the Pokémon weaker than you until the one stronger than you showed up elsewhere #what's more intimidating Kukui and Leon having the stronger starter or the weaker one? #meanwhile Hop and Nemona are like. explicitly going easy on you. Nemona was about to waste you with her champion level team like a Pokémon #player stumbling across a bug catcher they missed while having god in their party #yeah of course when clavell points that out she chooses the weaker starter #Hop also has two Pokémon on you and is not ready for you to be as good as you are that's why he takes losing so hard later #he's being cocky #ANYWAY THIS HAS BEEN YOUR SEMI MONTHLY ALTO RANT ABOUT CERTAIN POKÉMON FANS #Pokemon

The Blackthorns are the true masterminds fr

ANDREW — started it getting with Lady Nerissa (not just some common fair folk, but a high fae lady of the courts!!!) And having Helen and Mark who on their own could be high members of the court if they chose to (they’re shadowhunters of course but the potential is there)

HELEN — Is in contact with Nene and possibly some of her other cousins. Leads the LA institute, yes but she could become a Lady of the Courts if she chose to

MARK — On his own Mark has the support of the Wild Hunt on his side and he could be a member of the Seelie Court if he wanted to. Then he also has The King of the Unseelie Court who would do anything for him (and Cristina ofc)!! And then of course the Rosales connection and they can come and go from Faerie as they please.

JULIAN — you may be like Julian isn’t part faerie or in love with one BUT my man tricked the Seelie Queen AND he is with the wielded of Cortana (which can break the most ancient faerie blade!!!)

TY — obvi,, Kit would literally do anything for him and once Kit realizes the full extent of his powers, I have no doubt he’ll be unstoppable. The First Heir (whether Kit likes it or not) has immense influence over faerie. But also Ty on his own is def a threat, he’s incredibly smart and fast and willing to do what needs to be done.

DRU — I have no doubt that our Prince of the Seelie Court will be down bad for Dru. Will do anything for her. Also she has her own strength combined with the influence of all her older siblings, she is a menace. I have no doubt she can navigate faerie. Not to mention she and Ty both have immunity in the Unseelie Court bc Kieran wouldn’t let anything happen to Mark’s siblings.

TAVVY — tbd but He’s def gonna follow after his older siblings,, he doesn’t wanna be left out. Plus he is raised by Julian and Helen. And he could prob travel all throughout faerie by the time he comes of age and be protected bc that’s the youngest Blackthorn that no one can touch

In conclusion the Blackthorns have a monopoly on Faerie so no matter what ends up happening in TWP they come out on top

hi I am still not normal about how we never get much of an epilogue for Emily and Corvo in the second game we are told how the rule turned out and that Emily is the beloved empress now but nothing beyond that and I get that the entire game is very much built on that I get that the first game we have close relationship with Emily and become fond of the staff that work with the Loyalists so we feel alone because we do not quite see eye to eye with our allies and all we have left is this little innocent child that sees Corvo as someone who can do no wrong in this world which is strongly contrasted with the second game where Emily (or Corvo) has few trusted allies that they can actually rely on and it feels like a group of almost-friends working to dismantle the conspiracy but at the very end of it all Emily is all alone, even her return to the Tower is so much more grim, her taking down Delilah, the entirety of Dunwall- it all feels so incredibly and thoroughly isolating, she is all Alone now, and maybe that's why it bothers me so much to see the story end so abrupty.

it would've been so, so poetic if both the first and the second game ended with Corvo and Emily embracing

#li.txt #dh #sorry Im not okay about this I just #ahhh idk I cant quite explain it #but playing as Emily feels so much more lonely than corvo in the first game #she talks about saving corvo so much and we dont even get a hug #one thing that keeps coming to mind is silent hill 3 where heather goes through So So Much after her father is murdered #and when the final boss is beat she drops to her knees and breaks down #and I think Emily deserves a similar epilogue #the final release of all the stress and fear and anger #her freeing corvo and suddenly it clicks delilah is gone and her witches are gone and all the sigils drawn over the tower begin to fade #and it all hits her at once and she finally gets to cry it all out #because shes okay and meagan is okay and sokolov is okay and her father is okay and karnaca is okay #except they are not. because they all nearly died so many times and her father was trapped in stone and she had to see so much #she had to fight and survive all while unsure if it will lead to anything #all while she was worried for the people she loves because if she fails it means the few people she still has left will be gone too #she had to watch her mother die a second time and then hear the voice of her vengeful aunt for weeks taunting and mocking #(and she was her only family at the time and they could have been a family too. but that is too much to consider now) #i dunno. i just think she deserved a bit more there. just that one last hug from corvo before the game ends

Gengar strikes me as someone who knows he’s a piece of shit and is trying to embrace that. Emphasis on trying. Obviously there’s the fact that he called his group “Team Meanies” and bragged at people’s doorsteps that he was evil and gonna take over the world and stuff. He terrorizes Pokemon into joining his team and doesn’t even seem to respect his own teammates. The entire fugitive arc is him trying to scapegoat the hero for his crimes.

But two things stick out to me.

The first is that Gengar seems to think that being selfish and cruel is human nature.

In the dream eater sequence, Gengar talks about exposing hero and “showing what they’re like inside” purely on the grounds of them being human. I think that’s pretty self explanatory. He thinks that all humans are bad people. He’s speaking from experience, because if HE’S bad then surely all humans are, right?

The second is that Gengar… honestly comes across as self loathing to me, even if he tries to own how shitty he is. Just look at his dialogue during the crowd scene.

This dialogue combined with this expression come across as cracks of guilt to me. He knows what he did and he knows exactly what he’s doing now. And despite everything, I think he hates that. He hates what he did to Gardevoir. He knows it was horrible of him to abandon her after sacrificing herself for him. And he hates that. But he can’t admit it.

I think Gengar trying to take pride in his cruelty is deflection and denial. He couldn’t help what he did to Ninetales and Gardevoir, it was inevitable! He’s human, and all humans are selfish. He can’t change or control that. All he can do is double down over and over while trying (and failing) to escape the consequences. He can’t fathom the idea that a human can be a good person, so he’s not even gonna try to change.

And he hates hero because they are the antithesis to that statement. They want and try to do good wherever they can, and Gengar can’t believe that after learning that they’re human. He projects onto them, insisting that they have to be a bad person, because they’re human. Just like him. He can’t be good. They shouldn’t be good. Because if being good comes so easily to them, then what does that say about him?

And seeing Gardevoir in hero’s dreams talking about how much she cared for him, with sympathy leaking from hero’s heart, shatters that illusion he shrouded himself in.

#also we all make fun of his team name but even that strikes me as like… him being childish deep down #tbh ive never fully played through his story in the post game i just saw it on youtube years ago #so. my thoughts here might change #gengar is one of those characters that i honestly never cared much for growing up but i appreciate him more every time i replay the game #cause i see more and more angles of his character that i can work with. i dont think i ever gave him enough credit tbh djdjdjf #hes a well written character and while i definitely think that the other 3 villains are stronger that hes still pretty damn good #hes also the only other npc whos a former human which is insane to me tbh #echoed voice #pmd posting
