Going Nuts for the White-Breasted Nuthatch

Common throughout woodlands southern Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is a small passerine bird known primarily for its ability to climb down trees headfirst. It inhabits deciduous, mixed, and evergreen forests, as well as wooded parks and some urban areas-- anywhere with trees suitable for nesting. S. carolinensis uses pre-existing holes, usually those made by other birds, rather than building their own. They don’t migrate, but rather males guard their own separate territories and mates year round.

The white-breasted nuthatch is a long-term monogamous species; once pairs form, they stay with each other until one member dies, although extra-pair matings with is common for both sexes. The breeding season can occur any time from April to July, depending on the population’s region, and usually lasts about two months. Unpaired males sing to attract potential mates, and paired couples begin preparing their nest hole with fur and plant material. The female lays between 5 and 9 eggs, which she incubates while the male brings her food. After 13-18 days the eggs hatch, and both parents provide their young with food until they fledge about a month later. Fledglings will stay with their parents for another 2-4 weeks before leaving to find territories and mates of their own.

On the whole they are solitary birds, but in the winter, S. carolinensis can sometimes be seen in mixed flocks with titmice and chickadees. This is likely to increase the chances of escaping predators, which include owls and hawks. Woodpeckers, squirrels, and climbing snakes will also go after eggs and nestlings. One unique trick white-breasted nuthatches use to protect their nests from these predators is wiping the entrance to their tree hole with a piece of fur or leaves every time they leave to obscure their scent. Their foraging style is also very singular; crawling up and down trees and even upside down on branches to search for seeds and insects.

Of the three nuthatch species, the white-breasted nuthatch is squarely in the middle in terms of size. They typically measure 13-15cm in length, with a wingspan of 20-27cm and weighing 18-30g. The bill is long, thin, and slightly upturned to help S. carolinensis forage under bark while upside down. Their back is a distinct grey-blue, and the wings and tail are a mix of black, grey, and white. A black crown caps their forehead, and the cheeks and belly are white as the name suggests. There are 9 subspecies across north America, distinguished mainly by color variations and the degree of sexual dimorphism.

Conservation status: Due to its large population, at an estimated 10 million individuals, and signs that this population is growing, the white-breasted nuthatch is rated as Least Concern by the IUCN. However, in areas where increased foresting has removed trees suitable for nesting populations have begun to decline.

Exercise Fic Rec 10

This is my tenth week doing this! And still going strong! I though as a special treat, I would rec some of my favorite fics from the first fandom I got into, Hannibal. But first, exercise fic recs! I finished up my reread of “the cost of being a good dad” but then a *new* Superbat fic by Mawiiish was dropped. I was Very Excited. In the new fic, both Bruce and Clark are so dumb about their feelings. So, so dumb. It was great! The third fic “end of the line” was written in the point of view of a drunk person who tried to get in a fight with Clark Kent. Bruce is there to try to sooth things out. Shenanigans ensue. The next two fics are still in progress, but the updates were fun to read as I was exercising!

Like I mentioned above, Hannibal was the first fandom I got into and started reading fan fics. I remember reading the books as a teen and enjoyed them (I was a weird kid, don’t judge me), so when I heard there was a TV show, I was intrigued. I think I watched the first couple episodes then stopped, but I kept on seeing gif sets, fan art, and memes on Tumblr, so I started watching again. Then I started reading all the fan fic people were recommending on Tumblr. It soon went all downhill from there for me, lol.

As someone with a meat science background, I always found the Hannibal books and TV show so interesting. I remember when Hannibal and Will were discussing meat tasting “frightened”, and my meat sci brain perked up. Short-term stress in hogs can cause a meat quality issue called PSE (pale, soft, and exudative (watery)). Long-term stress can cause another meat quality issue in hogs and cattle called DFD (dark, firm, and dry). I feel like if Hannibal was going to run into meat quality issues with his uhhh, preferred protein, it would probably be PSE, since what he’s hunting is undergoing short term stress. Well, unless he decides to play with his food for a few days, then maybe he would get DFD meat. If I remember correctly, he does reference a “metallic taste”, and that’s more prevalent in DFD meat. PSE meat would be so dry and tough to eat, and not have a nice reddish-pink color. He would probably have to grind and mix it with other proteins to make something tasty.

All of these fics are Hannigram, except for “He Who Pours Out Vengeance”, but you can read that one as Hannigram (I think the second story in the series is slash, but it’s uncompleted). Not going to lie, after going through my old bookmarks to find these, I’m really tempted to reread a few (and by few, I mean all, haha).

Sunday Birding 7/23/23

Many excellent birds this morning! Even though I didn’t see as many at the pond (sob sob), the arboretum made up for it!

First bird to be seen was this handsome cardinal! He was also the first bird I heard at the pond too:

My funky lil’ guy was back! So many good (and silly) pictures of a green heron:

I always make a stop home before I go to the arboretum, and was very pleased to find this goldfinch getting some breakfast at my feeder:
