Researchers have identified a new complex-carbohydrate biomolecule, or glycan, that plays a key role in the nasal colonization of the Bordetella bacteria responsible for whooping cough. The discovery could make it possible to create a new drug or vaccine that interferes with the glycan to greatly reduce or even stop ongoing Bordetella transmission. Bordetella pertussis is the cause of the respiratory infection pertussis, which is widely known as whooping cough. Today's pertussis vaccines keep people from getting severely sick, but they don't eliminate the bacteria because it excels at colonizing, growing and persisting inside the nose. This means that despite more than 99% of people being vaccinated in the U.S., whooping cough continues to spread, leading to infections among vulnerable populations, particularly infants and elderly people.

A pertussis outbreak that began in southern Alberta in January is showing no sign of ending, and case counts of the disease — commonly known as whooping cough — have skyrocketed provincially. According to a memo, from medical officers of health to southern Alberta doctors and midwives, 831 cases of pertussis had been confirmed in the province as of early December. That's dramatically higher than most recent years.  Provincial notifiable disease surveillance reports show 2023's case counts are on track to be some of the highest in a decade.

long time no speak (again).

i have been ill for the last 10 weeks with a very annoying chesty cough. i was treated back at the beginning of november for bronchitis with amoxicillin (which did nothing) and then steroids and a stronger asthma pump.

then in the lead up to christmas, the cough got worse again and i started to bring up gunk. it was different in the sense of when i did cough, it felt like i was choking and like i couldn't get enough air in.

i went to the out of hours gp on christmas eve and she told me it was whooping cough. she gave me a week's worth of clarithromycin and more steroids.

i was really poorly over christmas week, puking on and off all day along with coughing my lungs up.

i still have the cough and they have now referred me for a chest xray to see if there is anything going on that there shouldn't be.

it's just getting on my nerves now.

Cases of whooping cough are growing in Alberta, and a Calgary doctor says it's a good reminder for parents to keep their kids safe by getting vaccinated.  An outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, was declared in January in the province's south zone, AHS said in a public service announcement Friday. It has continued to grow with a smaller outbreak now in the central zone.  Between those two zones, there are now 114 identified cases with the majority being children.
