honestly i'm not super into any hard lines being drawn between caretaker and whumpee. everyone should have a chance to sit in the whump chair, be it emotional or physical.

For the “tropes to rave about” list: When two characters have been whumped and one insists on downplaying their injuries to take care of the other one :D
Oh where to begin???
This trope is so versatile, and the results really depend on the relationship dynamic between characters. The dozens upon dozens of sub-tropes? Are they mutually competent, student and mentor (i.e., parent and adopted child), siblings, lovers, best buddies, strangers, rivals, or (gasp) enemies???
Whatever the case may be, there's a lot of potential here.
Give me suppressed winces and forced smiles. Give me hoarse whispers of "promise you're okay?" and "are you sure?" Give me voluntary starvation and/or dehydration so their companion has the strength to heal. Give me an exhausted caretaker carrying their companion across unknown distances because "it's fine, I'm fine, just keep talking to me," even though each movement is agony. Bloodstained clothes turned sticky and stiff, hidden from view. Powering through the pain because oh God that's too much blood and their companion shouldn't sound like that. Broken bones going unset and grinding painfully with every movement. Give me stiff movements and piss-poor acting, but their companion is so unwell that they just can't see it.
Let's not leave out the lonely parts for our poor caretaker, though. Those moments when their companion is asleep and they try to treat their own injuries as silently as possible - but careful, careful, they need to ration their medical supplies because their companion needs it more than they do. Those moments when they say they're going to find some food or water, knowing there's none, and they just use it as an excuse to let the mask drop - just for a little while. The hours (or days) of silence, broken only by their companion's shuddering breaths. The melancholy of believing rescue is out of reach. The resignation of deciding to rescue themselves and their friend.
Then give me a companion that, once they're starting to improve, sees right through their caretaker's façade. That healthy glow now looks like a feverish flush on the face that's been hovering over them. The caretaker's movements are too sluggish to stop their companion's too-fast hands from grabbing that traitorous, bloodstained article of clothing. Now there's questions, too many of them, and their caretaker can only manage to give mumbled answers to two of them. Righteous anger. The guilt of rifling through their things, only to see that all of the medical supplies had been used on themselves. Hurried movements and oh-damn-that-still-hurts; but their caretaker just doesn't have the strength to stop them from pushing them to lie down and now the roles are reversed until help can arrive or they save themselves.
That, or the caretaker manages to keep up the strong and steady act until rescue finally comes. It's almost eerie, really, how their mind and body are in sync with one another until they're absolutely certain that their companion is in safe hands. Then the exhaustion and pain come crashing down on them all at once. Maybe they stumble. Maybe they collapse. Maybe several sets of hands catch them. Or maybe they go unnoticed until someone turns around and oh - oh that's why they stopped talking.
-Bonus-
Caretaker: You're gonna need a, b, and c. And maybe a crash cart.
Rescue Medic, confused: But... your friend's condition doesn't call for any of that stuff.
Caretaker, actively bleeding out with a completely straight face: It's not for them.

whumpee’s who are weak and frail are great and all, but no one stops to think about the ones who are like, way stronger than their whumper’s
the whumpee’s who could easily take down their whumper if they wanted to, but can’t because of physical (handcuffs, rope, etc) or mental restrictions (like whumper is holding their family/friends hostage or something)
idk i think it would make it really interesting, the struggle of knowing that they COULD kill their tormentor, but they can’t.
anyway, that’s all toodles 😋

Eh I think that if anyone finds this but like two years later (happened to me once) the offer is still open (cause I was too scared to ask years later)
If ya wanna then idk comment or sent me a dm both are fine.

Thanks for the help 🙂 This ended up a bit detailed because that’s how I roll haha. The story was multi chapter and the plot is that the hero has lost their entire memory and doesn’t know who they are. They’re living in a mansion owned by the supervillain and they do superpower tests with them and go to the cabal meetings alongside them. Whenever the hero sits in the garden, they get approached by the villain, who’s trying to break them out because the supervillain actually (1/2)
wiped the hero’s mind to be their prisoner. After that there’s a bad or bittersweet ending but I don’t remember exactly. Thanks again (2/2)

I can’t say I’ve heard of something like this- but it’s a cool plot ngl-
Ahem this is where I pass this to whoever sees this! I’m sure someone out there that follows this blog knows about what this is!

You know what other gothic literature is a good source of whump that no one thinks of it, Victor Frankenstein and his creation
It has been a looooong time since I read Frankenstein! Like, back in high school! I have forgotten a lot, not enough to remember any whump possibilities, but I remember that Adam was so wonderful and sweet before a lot of crap happened to him. He deserved better!!!!! 😭

when a powerful figure is reduced to kneeling. when the lord is forced to bow. when the exile stumbles into an unwelcoming bar. when the “beast” is chained by their horns. when a god is dragged behind their enemy’s chariot, a captive and trophy. when the loyal “guard dog” character is muzzled and the silver-tongued thief falls silent in horror.
that’s the shit
it’s about the contrapasso. the reversal of roles and the sudden, plunging terror of being unable to hide.

What type of whump do you like?
I'm so glad you asked!
Actually I've been overthinking this question because I still don't know all the terminology. I engage with whump content in very short stints, so idk everything. and i worry about consuming or creating whump content "wrong" so there's that too
I like fantasy whump the most. Magic has a lot of whump potential all across the board, and you can do just about anything with it. Generally I tend to prefer D&D-esque to early industrial when it comes to the tech level of my settings. (Violet Evergarden has one of my fave tech levels.) Modern settings don't have quite enough escapism for my liking usually, and hot take I think they're boring. (Case in point, I do not like the box boy universe. I'll occasionally like a little snippet from it, but most of the time I don't want to read that setting. I do not like its version of a lot of aspects.) on the other hand i do have a character i toss in a few modern settings so oop guess i'm just picky as hell
On the other end, I do sometimes like sci-fi whump because Ratchet & Clank was my first second third sci-fi and I still adore it. (Just remembered that Code Lyoko and Treasure Planet predated that oop) I usually handle my sci-fi like R&C does and avoid or gloss over the "oppressed by the system" stuff usually; too much existential dread for me haha
I'm super super picky about my comfort in whump, ngl. Yeah, I like the wish fulfillment aspect of it, but also a lot of caretakers (and whumpees) are...kind of annoying? Mind, I'm still exploring, so I haven't found a lot of recover/comfort to read in the first place. I'll keep looking around.
As for my whumpees: I love love love non-human whumpees. Aliens, supernatural monsters, mythical creatures - give them all to me, I love them. Vampires and werewolves are kinda meh; I like the less thought of things, and I have very many non-human whumpees of my own that I can't wait to share. There are other whumpee types I like, of course, but the non-humans really do it for me a lot of the time. I've got a recurring theme that'll pop up with a handful of my whumpees so keep an eye out for that <3
WOW this is getting long! Uh- yknow what, bullet time! just gonna yoink terms from other intros I've seen.
TL;DR here's some themes I like:
fantasy/D&D whump
kidnapping
branding
dehumanization
living weapons
nonhuman whumpees (i think i got the point across haha)
defiant whumpees
conditioning
electricity
(some) lab whump
muzzles and collars
royal whump
nsfwhump
intimate whumpers
aaand some stuff I don't like:
BBU
team whump
cannibalism
amputation
nail removal
eye gore
mouth stuff (if very detailed)

tbh one of my favorite tropes is a defiant whumpee. angry, spits venom at their captor/tormentor at every turn, literally never gives them any indication that they're breaking, and once they leave and the whumpee is absolutely sure that they're gone, they absolutely break into pieces. awful, full-body sobs and shaking, gasping for breath. they completely break down.
but after it's over they collect themself, splash some water on their face (if they've got some). they can't let whumper know they're breaking. and they won't.

Some Stark from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End whump I enjoyed
My boy actually gets injured a few times but I really liked this part on Episode 11!
I wish there was more Stark whump, especially fan fictions about it but I'm already very glad with what the actual story is feeding me hehe
The party gets caught in a blizzard and Stark passes out
They find shelter but it's already occupied by Kraft. They end up sharing the cabin and as Fern wraps Stark up in a blanket she notices that he's getting colder.
Stark dreams about ice-cream and notes how he feels warm and comfortable and tries to remember what happened...
and wakes up in Kraft's arms who warmed him up!

Lovechild AU idea: I would like to suggest adding Vespula and Radovid into the found family mix! Vespula has the aunt vibe of "I could never be mad at you sweetie, have a cookie, anyway, whAT THE FUCK JASKIER." (I know Yen probably has that role but the kid is allowed to have cool aunts) and Radovid probably bonded with him while he and Jaskier were dating, like out of all the people his dad dated, he's the stepparent he liked the most. Anyway, I'm just hashing out ideas bc I love those two and want to see our sweet baby boy interact with them!
[MASTERPOST] Oh gosh...
The thing is, I DON'T TRUST RADOVID AT ALL. not yet at least. So if he exists in this AU... they're not having a good time.
