Finally got to tell someone about this. So the thing i could rave about is this peculiar idea: Whupmer using kind reassuring words while and before whump, you know… conditioning. So when they're rescued any attempts to comfort are DISASTROUS. Even better if they're seem fine at first so don't get that much comfort either, but then have a panic attack or something, and OMG just imagine…

Ooooohohohoho (when I do that laugh, you know I approve) what a whammy!! More emotional whump!! Conditioning! Emotional turmoil!!

I wonder... did the Whumper do their research beforehand so they would have an idea of what their friends/allies/family would say to comfort the Whumpee, or did they try every kind/reassuring phrase they knew of? Was it planned or spontaneous? Did they enter the situation, knowing full-well what they intended to do, every breath and syllable calculated, or did it come to them in a moment of brilliance, all cunning eyes and dangerous smiles?

Because this? This could work. This would continue to work long after the Whumper leaves the picture, and the Whumper is realistic. They know they won't be able to keep the Whumpee under their thumb forever. So, they might as well make a lasting impact.

And it worked. God, it worked. And for it to work, it had taken time. So, so much time... Months (years?) of tender words overlaying very real threats. Maybe it progressed further than the Whumper had anticipated and a gentle voice is all that it takes? Or even the Whumpee's name? And the first signs of how badly off the Whumpee is, was when they were rescued. Because what do you say when you're rescuing someone? How do you say it?

"It's okay, you're safe now."

Maybe the Whumpee flips their shit. Maybe they shut down. Maybe they flinch and shrink away. Or maybe they're concerningly unfazed. Whatever it is, their rescuer finally does what needs to be done and - ta-da! Recon mission was a success! Now the Whumpee can focus on recovering and they can get back to their lives!

...Right?

At first, maybe the team thinks that it's just them talking in general that triggers the Whumpee. And of course every attempt to get the Whumpee to talk had been a failure so far, so they try not talking. And... as unfair and cruel as it seems, it works. Until one day the Whumpee enters a room while everyone is talking (did they have a night terror? feel lonely? were they thirsty or hungry?) and nobody realizes this until they spot the Whumpee nearby, slumped in a comfortable chair.

On the other hand, give me a strong Whumpee that keeps up appearances despite everything they had gone through. They're doing remarkably well, considering the torment they had been subjected to. Until they're not. Give me a Whumpee that snaps.

Give me tears.

"Please, just leave me alone..."

Give me angry outbursts.

"It's oka-"

"It's not okay!"

Because it hurts. Don't they understand? Any attempts of comfort just slashes away whatever progress they'd managed to make. Gentle reassurances made the bruises bite. Tender words might as well be knives and knuckles. And shouting feels good because there's no mental block of soft words preventing them from communicating clearly. As long as everyone's shouting, they're in control.

Then, maybe, the Whumpee's friend finally gets it. They manage to pull the Whumpee into an embrace, stunned as they try to process what kind of Hell the Whumper had put the Whumpee through. They open their mouth to speak, but the Whumpee quickly cuts them off.

"Don't."

No, he's not.

BroZone broke up when Branch was ten and by that time most of his brothers (John Dory and Bruce) were either adults or had gotten emancipated (Clay). Floyd did live with Branch and their Grandma for a little bit before his solo career.

Floyd tried to keep in contact but due to outside interference he was forced to stop. And by the time he got out of that situation Branch was an adult and Floyd was unable to find him.

Today I was thinking about one of my favorite villain tropes: "I was raised a villain, it's all I know"

My main OC was a neglected orphan that got taken away by some creeps, she endured the hardships of having to fend for herself and therefore hates the villains that did nothing to protect her!

So I think it's quite interesting to see how a character was taught by force to be "evil" in order to survive, and when the hero tries to show them there's another way, the villain is like "Fuck, ew, I don't want your shit" OR villains that were raised as villains because they were raised within the source of evil, like a family of thieves or killers, or simply morally dubious characters!

Yessss i loved it. And this leads us to think: if the OC grew up in a villainous environment, what does that make her? A villain too? Or just 'someone' from that environment? And if they are just a product of the environment, what exactly is a hero? Is attack as defense really villainy? Where is the line? Where does it end? How can we get to the other side if we never even saw that stupid line? What if it doesn't exist? What if the idea of heroism is just that, an idea? Certainly, the reality of a villainous environment prevails over the idealism of a perfect world, where no one has to be a villain. Now imagine the conversation between these two worlds: a hero who sees the line that separates villains and heroes clearly, versus a villain who is agnostic to the reality of that line:

"I've seen things you could never understand, Hero." "I know, but there's another way. I can show it to you." "What about I show it to you? Come with me. Let me show you my world. Let me show you what hypocrites like you have done to people like me. Let me show you how I live, and you will tell me in the end if there is still another way. Give me a vote of confidence, just this once. It's more than you've ever given me."

Headcanon that Kid is a pretty avid reader and is lowkey pissed off that everybody thinks otherwise because of his image. The Victoria Punk has its own book club but Kid's membership status is on thin ice because he always reads ahead and snickers when somebody guesses a plot point incorrectly or gets attached to a character he knows something's about to happen to.

And the books with terrible endings he chucks right out the window.😆😆

I agree wholeheartedly. Kid looks like a big, jock idiot but he's so freaking smart. I mean, he's an engineer, you can't pull the shit he does without SOME smarts. Yeah I can build a lego brick house but I can't make it shoot freaking laser beams!

I love the idea of a book club on the Victoria Punk - @writing-yarn-goblin I KNOW you have some thoughts on this. I just know his ass reads ahead because he loves being informed ahead of everyone else. He won't volunteer information but he does chuckle like a jackass when someone misses plot points or context, and no he WON'T explain why its incorrect, he ain't doing the job for them!

He binds books he hates with metal and repels them into the ocean so they don't take up space in HIS library.

What about Parting Words Regret trope? That's when two characters get into an argument, one leaves, only for something terrible happen to them (did they get killed? Kidnapped? Disappeared without a trace???) and the other character feels guilty over their last words. If only they hadn't said such harsh things to their friend... then they would still be here.

Makes me cry every time. Such a good trope.

Ahh @whumperofworlds the emotional whump. You've gotta love it. A whump story simply isn't complete without it! I can personally relate to this trope, and maybe that's why I like it?? As with all tropes, there's so many different ways it could go. Normally, I'd refer to the characters as Victim and Survivor, but the characters could really be interpreted either way.

Were the words the result of an explosive argument? Were they muttered in complete seriousness, cold eyes locked with surprised, glassy ones? Was it over something petty or mundane that could have been an easy fix?

This is only punctuated further when we see the other character's reaction because oh - oh, that cut deep. When one leaves, is it a quiet, defeated retreat? All slumped shoulders and biting a quivering lip? Are the both of them still yelling as they depart? Does one person snatch up their coat and slam the door? Is one of them frozen, stunned silent by the harsh words, and the other just leaves them there? Do they have family, allies, or friends that witness this exchange? Are sides taken? Is one character completely abandoned as everyone else sides with the other?

Maybe they go for a walk to soothe their frayed nerves. Maybe they immediately try calling their phone, sending texts, leaving voicemails, only to be ignored. Then... then it really sinks in. Was it the Survivor that ignored the calls, or was it the Victim? Either way, it hurts. See, this part is important to me. We, as readers/viewers, need to see how profoundly this exchange affected the Victim before the Event takes place. The deeper the wound, the more agonized the Survivor's regret and guilt is. The readers/viewers can shake their heads in disappointment and can still feel sympathy for the Survivor.

And then it happens. Poof. The Victim is gone. Kidnapped, killed, missing - whatever it was, it happened. Where was the Survivor when they found out? What were they doing? Were they eating (they can't stand the taste of that specific food now) or were they in the middle of an important conversation/task? Were they safely tucked away, sleeping in a comfortable bed, only to be ripped from sleep by someone alerting them to the news? Do they leap into action, all arguments forgotten? Do they freeze up? Do they demand answers?

Give me a normally calm, level-headed Survivor turning into a terrifyingly silent, angry Survivor that launches into a personal mission to avenge/rescue the Victim by any means necessary.

Give me a confident, hothead Survivor turned into a useless, crumpled mess of tears and cries of anguish.

Let's not forget the biggest part though; that part you referred to. The regret. The guilt. The constant stream of whywhywhy's and what if's and if only's in their mind. It's crippling. It nearly breaks them. Maybe it does break them. Unspoken apologies haunt them. Maybe their allies/friends lay blame on them for what happened, or maybe they try to convince the Survivor that it wasn't their fault, that there's nothing anyone could have done - but that doesn't matter because they still said those horrible, horrible things. The last impression they left on the Victim was negative and demeaning and hate-filled and so so so not true. The last memory they have of the Victim is a flushed face and clenched fists and hitched breaths and it's not fair!

Maybe this guilt is the only thing that drives them onward, because they can't let this happen again. They refuse. Never again. No more Victims. They won't make the same mistake twice.

Because it's their fault. Their words drove off the Victim. Words really do hold the most profound power in the world. It's just a pity how easy it is to use them the wrong way.

Not only is Zuko thrilled to see how much the SWT is able to grow after the war, but he gets to spend the whole day with Katara learning about her culture. 2. A headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like

I really wasn't sure how to feel about the headcanon that Jamie has to learn a bunch of stuff about "normal" childhoods. His mom loved him, and lots of people (myself included) grow up low-income, so it didn't make sense to me at first. But I've come to like it, especially seeing Jamie be taken care of by the team. Being low-income and then having to deal with Tartt Sr. would probably mean that he's missed out on a lot of information -- and would probably feel defensive about it, at least at first, contributing to his prick behavior until someone says "hey, it's cool, let's just explore this together" and pulls him in.

5. Something you see in fics a lot and love

Usually Colin has two ways of meeting Michael in fics. While I absolutely enjoy fics about them meeting on Bantr, I adore fics where Colin crashes into his car. I want Colin to have a meet-cute like that, so it always makes me so giddy.

11. If you're a writer or artist, what piece of fic or art are you proud of making?

I know I talk about it a lot, but I really am proud of my Dichotomy series. I've never completed a fanfic series before (I have 2 that are currently pretty much abandoned) from like 2017 and 2021, so the fact that I didn't give up and only have one left is something I'm really proud of. It also gives me a lot of encouragement for future series I'm excited for -- I really can do this!
