Unfinished and Works in Progress Fic Recs
These are the unfinished fics that haunt my brain, sometimes years after their last updates. The fics that I cannot bear to remove from my subscription list just in case they get another update. Some are still active, some are abandoned, all of them have something special that struck my imagination and made them unforgettable. I’ve excluded unfinished series from this list. They may get their own list later.
Mix of gen and slash, a range of ratings. As always, read at your own risk and don’t forget to leave some love for the authors.
SVSSS
A Cloak of Feathers by Asymptotical
Having a mythology halo was a little ominous, but at least it got the System off his back. Shen Qingqiu was way less annoyed about that than he was about transmigrating into a human in a world where swans didn't even exist.
Into the Abyss by esama
In which Shen Yuan pisses the System off and it sends him straight into the Endless Abyss.
Four years later, Shen Qingqiu does the same to Luo Binghe.
I dropped my head it was just around here somewhere, has anyone seen it by Cernunun
Shang Qinghua goes through the pages with renewed vigor, paying special attention to the margins and the details. Now that he’s looking for it, he can see the little transcriptions everywhere, running alongside the lines of an ink drawing or around the perimeter of a talisman, or in the corner under a section on growth rates of chi-stealing willows. The English scripts ruthlessly spoil or mock his book in turn.
Not only is it a cultivator’s field guide, it’s a tourist’s guide. Someone is touring the world he’s made.
Shen Yuan leaves his spoilers lying around. This becomes Shang Qinghua's problem, and what kind of bro would he be if he didn't make it Shen Yuan's problem too?
The Perils of LIVE Editing! (ft. BinggYuan!!!) by seol_xiv
In which Shen Yuan flounces around the PIDW timeline in different roles and makes a mess of everything. He likes to think he helped make some things better, but he’s pretty sure he made things worse too.
Apparently, constantly leaving behind a protagonist that has major abandonment issues was a bad thing.
…Huh, who knew?
The Untamed/MDZS
Melody of the Lost and Found by esama
Lan Xichen and Wei Wuxian set out to change the past and undo the many losses they'd suffered.
Cultivating Empathy by Rahar_Moonfire
Cloud Recesses is burning. Flames devour buildings and people without care. Lans are dying. He can feel them. He can feel their fear, their despair, their pain as they are struck down again and again and he curses his Empathy. He can't feel them when they change. Clutching the qiankun bags of Lan Clan relics, Lan Xichen fled on his sword. He meant to follow the shoreline to Qinghe and spread the word of the Wen Clan's assault. But in his spiritual and mental exhaustion, he overshot his goal and fell instead into a forest when a snow white creature with eyes the clearest blue found him. Chose him.
not a fair choice by Prince_Enby
"There are characters burned onto her wrist, red and raw but, thankfully, not bleeding. His sister stared at it with empty eyes. Jiang Cheng thought back to the cliff, and the sheer amount of blood that trailed down Wei Wuxian's arm - far too much to have come from Lan Wangji alone, and yet, he didn't think Wei Wuxian had truly been hit by a single cultivator.
The characters looked painful to the touch, just as painful as the red line that traces his sister's throat, miraculously healed shut."
Jiang Yanli lives, at the cost of Wei Wuxian's life. Everyone has more than a few thoughts about that.
see you yesterday by glyphic
On Halloween night, an exiled demonic cultivator and a Lan disciple get stuck in a time-loop, find each other, and try to figure it all out.
The Mire of the Lotus by hypermoyashi
Amidst the dark soil and stark bone of the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian died.
He died and left a war behind that none other than the Elder of Yiling could possibly hope to tip the scales enough to allow the heroes to shoot down the sun, but when thrown a loop, fate will find a way. The Wens were destined to fall, and an Elder of Yiling was destined to rise. For this story, it was Jiang Yanli who took up the mantle.
Twin Treasures by crossdressingdeath
When Madame Jin happens to come across Cangse Sanren's orphaned son on a trip to Yiling, she can't bring herself to leave him there. Wei Wuxian finds a somewhat different family. Jin Zixuan finds a little brother. The course of history changes accordingly.
(Some things are written in fate, but even fate itself changes.)
Son of a Soldier Man by FireAwayy
He always thought he would be dead when the world ended.
After all, isn’t the sun just one giant explosion? A time bomb waiting to blow, taking the solar system and all life as they know it with them. That was a terrifying thought. But when the clock was counting down from 8 billion years—well, you’d have to forgive his hubris in thinking the end of the world would have nothing to do with him...
---
Or the fic where the world is invaded by aliens, and it's somehow up to a surly paramedic, his vegan partner, an obnoxious scientist, and a group of heavily armed special forces soldiers to save it. Between running for their lives, making terrible sci-fi jokes, and flirting at wildly inappropriate times, they'll face their fears and improbably, might just fall in love.
Oh, they might save the world, too.
Growing from Mud by Aly_H
When he was young Xue Yang lived on the streets. Mostly by himself until a boy named Wei Wuxian decided to be his older brother out of nowhere. Because of him he's got a wonderful big sister who he'd do anything for and two annoying elder brothers he can't decide if he wants to murder or not.
Or the AU where Xue Yang grows up at Lotus Pier and has a family that cares.
Word of Honor
A match made in hell by Madcap_Miss
Several decades after the Liulija was shattered and its keeper murdered, Wen Kexing returns to the mortal realm to finally unleash his bloody revenge. He's barely set foot over the border before he meets an immortal who seems bizarrely unconcerned by this.
Plain Sight by jaemyun
Upon the news that a new Valley Master had ascended the throne, the jianghu was struck with fear. Fear that tenuous peace would end. Fear of another war that would deal them more casualties. In what the men of the jianghu would never admit was desperation, they sent peace offerings. Wine, food, fabrics...women. There is no war. No praise or rebuke, but the offerings continue.
Zhou Zishu cannot fathom why he can't get the attention of the Valley Master, whether it be for information gathering or assassination. He makes a pretty woman, after all, the newest 'offering' added to this donated harem of his.
He has a lot more luck when the Valley Master brings a few of the harem women with him to the Heroes Conference, of all things. Especially when he finds something of a platonic zhiji in the sharp Zhou Xu and begins to trust her with his thoughts.
He definitely has more luck when Wen Kexing proposes he pose as a man to infiltrate the Conference - although to be quite frank, the Valley Master acts...oddly, once he shows his true self.

Isn't it?

Li Cu's already been kidnapped and dragged off on an adventure once. He'd rather not do it a second time.
Of course, things never turn out his way. --
Or, Li Cu accidentally sets up Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling with Liu Sang, gets shot twice, gets buddy-buddy with his parasitic snake spirit, kisses a pretty boy, adopts a little sister, and speaks with ghosts-- not necessarily in that order.

It’s bad enough being transmigrated to the world of “Tales of the Tomb Explorers”, the pit-digging protagonist-halo-wearing webnovel he loves to hate. Even worse, Liu Sang isn’t even the hero! Stuck in the body of a bit-part villain, he has to earn points, fill in plot holes, and – what was the other thing? Oh yes: avert his character’s inevitable demise.

Everlasting Light by Alxina, xantissa
It's been almost five years since Xiaoge went behind the Gate, and Wu Xie hasn't been the same since. In his single-minded pursuit of the Wang family, Wu Xie was willing to give up everything that had mattered, uncaring of the costs.
And he swore he'd make it better. For Xiaoge, for everyone.
But meeting a freezing, half-dead stranger in the mountains might change everything.
The Witcher
Oh, So One of Those Djinny Djinn Djinns? Like a Genie? by BurningMattress
Jaskier is a genie that has been “freed” from his “bottle” which is bits and pieces of his lute. He isn’t truly free but enough to not actually care about being a genie. He's been traveling the world doing whatever. Upon meeting Geralt, he pretends to be a normal bard as he does with everyone but every now and then when Geralt wants something it just seems to be easier to get it. Sometimes when it’s a close call with a monster, any healing supplies are always nearby, sometimes they always have the right amount of coin, sometimes Jaskier just knows exactly what is needed for any given situation
Sometimes Jaskier and Geralt split paths and Geralt notices how his luck seems to better when his little strange bard is around.
The Crooked, The Cradle by RoyalRampionEngineer
_“Hello my daughter,” Pavetta whispers. She smooths a hand over her daughter’s ashen blonde hair, so much like her own. Pavetta idly wonders if she will inherit her own striking green eyes, or the steady dark brown of her father, Duny.
As if fated by Destiny itself, the babe blinks her eyes open. Her big, beautiful, bright cornflower blue eyes. Distantly, Pavetta hears the bard in the corner reaching the end of his song, the strings of the lute building into a resounding crescendo. She has a sudden flash of memory, of those strong lutist fingers pressed against her bare spine, playing a different kind of song._
Ah fuck, Pavetta thinks, more than a little hysterically. Ah, fuck.
Or, a Witcher AU where Jaskier is Ciri’s biological father.
Stranger Things
The great pretenders by theraincanttouchus
Heather bullies Billy into letting her become his beard.
Somehow this ends in both of them becoming better (and more traumatized) people.
Time in a Bottle by IncompleteSentanc (Erava)
"Someone’s gone and moved into the old trailer that used to belong to Chief Hopper. It raises a few eyebrows, not the least because Jim Hopper only just passed away, merely a month ago, and no one had seen any ‘for sale’ signs."
Socially awkward Steve Hopper has just moved into the trailer park, and Eddie Munson just wants to get to know his weird little neighbor.
Not Me
**Openly Grey by Sweet_William **
When they were kids, White was taken away from Black. Years passed, their broken connection gnawing at him every day, and finding his brother again was always there in the back of his mind. When he realised the life his father had planned for him could never include him seeing his brother again, he made a choice.
He would always choose Black.

Part 1 of Shattered Path

Nobody said traveling through time would be easy — nothing Wen Kexing has done has ever been easy — but A-Xu was dying. He was going to die.
If Wen Kexing could not save his A-Xu in the life they shared together, he would save him elsewhere in the past. And then some other version of them could live on, while this A-Xu and this Wen Kexing would stop existing. Would become something that never existed at all. If Wen Kexing did this right, he would die one day after — and some twenty years earlier than — his husband.
Only, A-Xu died and Wen Kexing didn't stop existing.

and i’ll do anything you say (if you say it with your hands) chapter 10
“You came looking for me,” Sokka says. Zuko’s already soft eyes melt further.
“Of course I came looking for you,” he says. Like it’s obvious. Like it doesn’t knock the earth off its axis.
For a second, Sokka forgets about the pain, past and present. All he feels is a treacherous bubble of hope – inside his chest, under his skin, stuck in his throat.

Hi! Do you know any fics where wanxian meet in early childhood, like, before the jian clan took wwx in? I'm new to mdzs and a bit overwhelmed by the amount of fics 😅
Early Wangxian
There are a number of fics out there that have Wei Ying and Lan Zhan meet as children and grow up together. Time-travel of one sort or another is usually involved. Here are three of my favorites.
The Young Masters of Four Seasons Manor by gaotamao 22 chapters, 92k word, complete
I previously reviewed this story here. It is a mix of Módào Zǔshī and the Untamed, as well as Faraway Wanderers and Word of Honor (a quite different tale that was turned into a Chinese drama, well worth watching.) The story involves two Immortals acting as adoptive parents of our two heroes.
It starts with the Universe turning back time 23 years for Reasons. And Immortals taking note.
All will be well when the day is done by abCEE 8 chapter, 86k words, complete
In which Yu Ziyuan has a nightmare of her future life and arranges things so that Jiang Fengmian never finds Wei Ying. Rather than killing the child outright, she dumps Wei Ying's fevered body in Caiyi instead …
I just reread the last chapter. The ending produces tears every time.
The Dreams of Youth by sami 25 chapters, 85k words, complete
Another story in The Same Moon Shines universe, this one starts with a five-year old Lan Zhan aiding his mother's escape from Gusu. From there they go to Yiling to rescue a very young Wei Ying, and eventually end up traveling through Meishan Yu territory, where they meet a matriarch known as "Popo".
Canon and non-canon events ensue.

sharing my favourite wenzhou fic!
Sanguine
Zhou Zishu is ready to be done with Tian Chuang. He's ready for his seventh nail, and ready to wander before facing his eighty one brothers with a bowed head in the afterlife. He will do this after, apparently, one last mission that's simply too intriguing to pass up.
The Ghost Valley has sent a letter past its borders, asking to attend the Heroes Conference of the Five Lakes Alliance. The Five Lakes Alliance, unbelievably, has accepted. Both no doubt have hidden intentions, and Prince Jin wants eyes and ears on the scene. Zhou Zishu can't quite bring himself to deny his own ravenous curiosity enough not to accept.
The stunning beauty that shows up with the girls of the Department of the Unfaithful, the one who introduces himself as Wen Kexing, is universally assumed to be a favorite plaything of the yet unseen Ghost Valley Master. His beauty and charm may be enough to captivate all the others into underestimating him, but Zhou Zishu knows a killer's eyes when he sees one. Wen Kexing is a puzzle he'd like to figure out, and Zishu himself can't say he isn't also captivated by dark eyes and a smile that wouldn't be out of place with blood in its teeth.

this fic (The golden robe. by orange_crushed) is actually so fucking good, it’s like canon divergence post canon, xie’er is emperor, thirty seven, and so so tired, du pusa is still his right hand, zhao jing is still in the paralysis he put him in and he’s trying to get him out, yby has been imprisoned by xie’er for nearly a decade in a tower but he’s still his incorrigible self, xie’er has a baby ✨SON✨ (it’s perhaps like. 1/6 a kid fic. it contains multitudes)
like the world building is so good, the characters are compelling & the power dynamic between yby and xie’er is so crunchy .
also VIOLENCE and GORE
also xie’er POV my love
also it has some really fucking funny moments

Ye Baiyi stared at him, at the face he knew better than his own. At the smile that never failed to make his heart race, at the eyes that held more stars than the night sky. He could feel his lips tremble and his nose start to run. His throat was tight and his voice was raw, and he wiped his sleeve over his damp cheeks and said, "Changqing."
"I'm here," answered Rong Changqing, just as he'd promised.
"Ch-Changqing," Ye Baiyi said again, hating the wavering of his voice, the wobbling of his jaw, the shaking of his entire body--but unable to make it stop, unable to help himself.
"I'm here," said Rong Changqing, arms coming up to embrace Ye Baiyi very carefully. The touch was so welcome, it was almost painful--it felt so good to be held that it almost hurt, and Ye Baiyi could not stifle the sob that came from the depths of his heart.
"Changqing-ah," he wailed, only this time it was muffled by Rong Changqing's robes, and so no one else but the pair of them could hear the broken sound, or Rong Changqing's soothing murmurs of, "I'm here, Yiyi. I'm here."

AO3 Wrapped [Reader Edition]
Questions Here
Answering @tciddaemina:
6. What's your absolute favorite works you read this year?
Not to fawn unduly (it is in fact very due), but one of them is absolutely come all ye mighty. It was the first work of yours I read, and even though I've read - and loved - many of your others, it remains my favorite of them all. Igris is just The Character of All Time, I love a fealty kink/trope fully realized, and you really lean into how inhuman his experience of the world is.
A close second would be Tarnished Gold, by Prim_the_Amazing, a SVSSS AU where SY transmigrated into GYX instead, but told solely from the outsider POV of LBH. It follows him as he works to replace GYX as head disciple, but gets gradually more and more frustrated and intrigued by this enigmatic man who seems to see himself as an actor with an expiring role. Incredible character study, and so many moments where you can feel the palpable angst coming through that LBH has no frame of reference for. Great use of meta-narrative.
14. Favorite AU you read this year?
The wind of morning. by orange_crushed. It's a Word of Honor YeXie AU with dragons, so of course I was already going to be sold, but then it also delves into a really beautiful slow-burn relationship development as well as fully exploring how alien non-human creatures would act and think, my eternal fave.
29. Do you have any works you think are required reading for (fandom)?
This is such a hard one, since tastes vary so much, but if I had to pick one from what I've read this year, I would go with Cultivate: Slow Life on a Monster-Infested Mountain by NeonGhostCat. It is another SVSSS AU, with a LiuShen pairing that still treats LBH as a solid and valuable character. Shen Yuan getting to follow his dreams as a Manic Pixie Monster Aficionado is always going to be right up my alley, and the author does an amazing job of fleshing out the world in interesting and enjoyable ways, as well as building up the mystery of the mountain, and extremely delightful OCs, rare but well-utilized when they are.

Today, Immortal Wanderers would like to join the community in celebrating an appreciation day towards all the talented fanfiction writers.
Writers of fanfiction are one of the many backbones of any fandom, sharing multiple ideas and worlds starring some of our favourite characters from all forms of media, and doing so for free. It is often a project of passion and love towards the original work itself, and much joy is shared with readers who read these stories.
To celebrate, Immortal Wanderers has invited some of those in our discord server to share either recent works they have enjoyed or which have become fond favourites over time, as well as allowing some of the talented writers in this community to share one of their works and talk a little bit about it. We hope you will join us in these celebrations, and share some love towards these works and their authors 💖 ⛰️
These recommendations come from across all three stories; both the original novels Qi Ye and Tian Ya Ke, as well as the drama Word of Honor.
AUTHORS SHOWCASE
@MINNARR
Calling us home across the open yards → Word of Honor fic
Summary:
Deciding to get married doesn’t involve anything dramatic, but Zishu stares at the earliest draft of the guest list with a sinking stomach. There’s a name that isn’t there, and he suddenly wants it to be with a desperate, yearning hunger. They haven’t spoken in years, but…
Well, Zishu’s been learning how to want things. How to make the things he wants reality.
“I want Jiuxiao there,” he says.
Authors Comments:
This piece was born from excited brainstorming in DMs with a friend and is part of a whole little headcanon universe, but even without that context I am just so fond of this fic. A slightly softer universe for our faves, plus sooo many Zhou Zishu & Qin Jiuxiao feelings, and I like the way it let me organically lay out all these pieces of a life Zhou Zishu has built with his chosen family, where he's working to be happy.
@MYRO
Unvarnished → Qi Ye fic
Summary:
“Zishu? I know you’re in there. Liang Jiuxiao told me what happened. We need to talk. I’ve brought wine and dinner, too.”
Zhou Zishu goes still when he realizes who it is. Jing Beiyuan is, at least, one of the few people who knows some of his secrets. Not all, of course, not even most—but the things he doesn’t know are unlikely to shock or anger the man. He’s also, however, the most ruthless person Zhou Zishu knows, and if Zhou Zishu can barely endure himself in this state, Jing Beiyuan is unlikely to be willing to do so either.
So that means he’s come...well.
Zhou Zishu takes a deep breath. He could flee, or fight—Jing Beiyuan is no match for him, physically—but he won’t. Because the thing is, Jing Beiyuan is just doing what he would, if their positions were reversed. And...it’s probably the right thing to do, if there really is no cure.
(In which Jing Beiyuan learns he can trust this life's version of Zhou Zishu.)
Authors Comments:
This is still one of my favorite Qiye fics that I've written. It started out with a discussion about how truth spells/serums in fics normally lead to characters divulging their secret crushes, but if ZZS in Qiye-era got hit with one it would be...much much worse. And then I had to write it...
@THEYILINGLAOZUS
In Every One Of Us Shines The Light Of Love → Word of Honor fic
Summary:
A few years have passed since that fateful moment in which Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu became immortals together, and Zhou Zishu is thankful for every new day he wakes to the infinite life they now share with one another.
The days are only made more special when their young family is able to visit them.
Authors Comments:
This came from me having finished writing two previous parts to this series and thinking ‘hey. What’s an average day like for Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu after they’ve settled into their immortality more?’ I wanted to create a piece which was an inside look into one day in their lives, while also considering subjects like the passing of time for the mortals they surround themselves with, how some ghosts of their past linger, as well as how a future with endless possibilities is open for them now. I had a lot of fun working on this, even if it did take me roughly three months to do so!
@NEIL
tease your mouth with kisses → Tian Ya Ke fic
Summary:
Before leaving, Wu Xi gave Wen Kexing a long list of ingredients and salves. The first was for him to cook, and the second was to be given to Zhou Zishu in case he experienced any pain during his recovery. He told Wen Kexing to mind Zhou Zishu’s recovery and to be good to him.
He didn’t have to be told. Wen Kexing might not be a good man, but he would be good to Zhou Zishu, just like Zhou Zishu was good to him. There was nothing else Wen Kexing would rather do now.
After everything, Wen Kexing takes care of his husband.
Authors Comments:
I wrote this for TYK Week, and I'm still super happy with this fic! I think a lot about post-canon Wenzhou and how they deal with Zishu's recovery, so I decided to write a fic about it. I'm particularly very happy with how I wrote Wen Kexing's headspace in this! His bland of obsessive and adoring is just so, so fun.
@NAD
I’ll always be there by your side → Qi Ye fic
Summary:
When Jing Beiyuan decides he has had enough with the Helian family and goes away, he meets a handsome stranger named Wu Xi.
Is Wu Xi really who he says he is? Or is he hiding something?
Now that Jing Beiyuan has established his own company, how will he face Helian Yi?
AU, where the Helians have a firm and Jing Beiyuan helps them. Jing Beiyuan goes away and creates his own company with the help of Wu Xi and Ping An. Apparently, Wu Xi is just an ordinary person, a secretary, but is he?
Authors Comments:
This is my first and only (for the moment) Qi Ye fic. As our fandom is quite small, it doesn't really get noticed :( It's my first work, and certainly not by best, but I'd always appreciate the feedback, and it even includes some pics at the end <3 thank you in advance if you decide to read it :)
@ALISA
Field Research → Qi Ye fic
Summary:
Helian Yi has given Zhou Zishu an assignment that will require some highly specialized knowledge.
Jing Beiyuan is a very enthusiastic tutor. (Zhou Zishu is an unexpectedly eager student.)
Authors Comments:
Anyone who has ever spoken to me about this fandom knows how obsessed I am with Jing Beiyuan and Zhou Zishu's relationship. From JBY's first life to post-SHL/TYK, from platonic soulmates, to friends with benefits, to shockingly tender lovers, I love it allllll. I love THEM and I love sharing them with you all. (I especially love sharing them with each other.) And this fic, I think, is some of my best work, showcasing the care and love they hold for each other, the tenderness with which they treat each other, and how that bond is rock-solid, even knowing they both have soulmates waiting for them down the line. (Allllllllssoooooo I'm really, really into the sex in this one.) Let these lonely boys care for each other! They both need it so much!!!!
READERS RECOMMENDATIONS
@CARMINE-SUNLIGHT
there’s a special providence in the fall of a heron → written by beansprout → Word of Honor fic
Summary:
In the outside world, there was a rumor about the Qingya mountains. It was said to be one of the holy places, auspiciously positioned for healing and favored by the celestials, who often descended amongst the people to perform miracles.
For Zhou Zishu, here was how things had played out: he wanted a way out of his service at court, the Emperor wanted immortality, and Jin-wang alone found a way to connect the dots.
Zhou Zishu had a theory. There must be a secret sect of healers who lived somewhere in the mountains of Qingya, the kind of sect who focused on learning solely for the sake of knowledge, with very strict rules against the ‘distractions’ of the outside world.
To solve the mystery, a certain white-clothed traveling doctor was the key.
Or: mythology AU. zzs is undercover in Qingya village as a woodcutter to investigate rumors of celestials who grant immortality. during his mission, he finds himself hopelessly tangled with a nosy, persistent traveling doctor who has a knack for getting past his guard.
Readers Comments:
Each time this fic updated I'd forget about my real life problems and went to the most magical place. The writing is so evocative and the plot is full of amazing twists, I love it so much!
long life and promise → written by Katharija → Tian Ya Ke fic
Summary:
On a summer evening, two men are watching the falling stars.
Readers Comments:
I read this fic recenly and it made my day instantly better. The atmosphere was spot-on, and there were so many tender moments that made my heart flutter. Such a lovely look into Wenzhou's future.
@MYRO
Like Pieces into Place → written by ghostybreads → Qi Ye fic
Summary:
“Hmm… How about this? I won’t stay mad, if I can have this for a few days,” Jing Beiyuan offered, stopping in his tracks and picking the sable up by its scruff. It gawked in surprise, before its expression soured into a glare, scrunching its nose up at him. Jing Beiyuan was a swindler and a cheat. It didn’t really mind if it could do something to help, but he worried Master so much! Wasn’t this just taking advantage?
Wu Xi hesitated. “Alright.”
The sable blinked.
// OR; Qi Ye and its characters, through the eyes of a sable.
Readers Comments:
This is essentially Qiye told from the sable's pov, but honestly it is so much more than that. It nails and is incredibly perceptive about all the main relationships involved (by which I mean those involving Jing Beiyuan, Wu Xi, Zhou Zishu, Helian Yi, Liang Jiuxiao), but also has gorgeous parts about Ashinlae and Nuahuar and Ping An and others.
experiments → written by sunbathing → Qi Ye / Word of Honor fic
Summary:
Zhou Zishu tries to see if the pleasure aspect of drunk life dream death works well. With Beiyuan. At a brothel.
(sometimes, you just need to get high and fuck your best friend)
Readers Comments:
This is a ZZS/JBY fic where the two of them hook up while testing drunk like a dream formulas. Besides being sexy, it just gets the dynamic of their relationship so well and I love it.
@THEYILINGLAOZUS
在天涯犹有未归人; those left at the edge of the sky → written by yiqie → Tian Ya Ke fic
Summary:
“Why would you inflict a Wen Kexing who has lost you,” asked Jing Beiyuan, “upon this world?”
Reader Comments:
This fic is beautiful, honestly. Set during Zhou Zishu’s three-month recovery period toward the end of the novel and told through Jing Beiyuan’s perspective, he watches as Wen Kexing slowly looses more and more hope for his beloved ever waking. And it is heartwrenching. Everything about this story is perfect in my eyes.
Five Moons → written by yicityslut → Qi Ye / Tian Ya Ke fic
Summary:
For five whole months, Jing Beiyuan and Wu Xi are staying on the icy mountain to help Zhou Zishu heal.
In those five months, new friendships are formed, old memories are revisited and plans for the future are made.
Reader Comments:
Okay, I admit. I may hold some bias towards this piece as it was a fill written for me for last years Qi Ye Exchange event, but my god. My own love does not take away how incredible this piece is, as this story is such a delight. The author somehow filled every request I had (even the ones I didn’t expect, such as the sable having an apperance!) and they did so beautifully. The voice of all the characters is incredibly on point, and this is another interpretation of how I can easily see Wu Xi, Jing Beiyuan and Wen Kexing being whilst Zhou Zishu recovers. Plus the slowly building friendships that are shown is this are just ((chefs kiss)) I couldn’t recommend this piece more, and often find myself re-reading and grinning into my hands like a small child at how in love with it I am.
@NAD
Begin again → written by seaprincess90 → Qi Ye fic
Summary:
Jing Beiyuan has walked his entire life alongside Helian Yi. He admires him more than anyone, he knows that his future is with him, that all the goals in their lives include the other, that there is no way that destiny can be rewritten. But then his life takes an unexpected turn when someone new appears in the life of the one he considers his eternal and one true love. Beiyuan will have to sort out if it is time to forget or if he must hasten his conquest, while a boy who has just arrived in everyone's lives, Wuxi, little by little tries to be part of his heart.
Reader Comments:
There are no words to describe how much I love this fic!! It deserves so many more kudos, comments and hits! The pacing is immaculate and you can really understand and feel what the characters are going through!
La joya de Da Qing → written by alone_in_the_moondust → Qi Ye fic
Summary:
Reader Comments:
Despite it being in Spanish, i really encourage you to read this even if it's with Google translate. I consider this one to be one of the GOATs of Spanish, or even in general, short Qi Ye fics. There is not one day me and my bestie don't talk about it!
@LU
Possession → written by bluemorningsoup, art by mtkay13 → Tian Ya Ke fic
Summary:
In which it became unsure whether a ghost was possessing a body or a body was possessing a ghost.
This was not about relief. This was not about violence. This was different. Wen Kexing was not fucking Zhou Zishu as much as he was filling him up. Zhou Zishu was not being fucked by Wen Kexing as much as he was taking him in, showing Wen Kexing the hollowed, gouged parts of him, empty chambers that Wen Kexing was all too eager to filll.
Reader Comments:
a very intense journey through devotion and hunger, and how both exist within the other. the hunger to be possessed, the devotion to possess, and how it gets lost in the way who is the one possessing who. i wish i had words to explain how beautiful this writing is. plus, it's about fisting.
Written in the Red and the Green → written by Gileonnen → Tian Ya Ke fic
Summary:
Wen Kexing wins a duel and claims the right to top. Zhou Zishu is more than happy to let him.
Reader Comments:
theres mixed nastiness and gentleness between them in this fic thats very satisfying, they really are freaks who love each other so deeply, fitting together with pain and pleasure like pieces of a puzzle. and i adore every piece of fanwork that showcases zzs wrist bite scars haha..
@ALISA
Which to Cut and Which to Pull → written by sideB_track2 → Word of Honor fic
Summary:
A golden slice of light cutting through the night. A forbidden flash of pale limb glimpsed in passing. Impossible, surely, not to peek through a crack in the door to learn more of the secret transpiring within…
Dangerous things, secrets, to hold and to happen upon. Ye Baiyi almost wished he’d kept walking.
Reader Comments:
YeXie is always an achy, bittersweet sort of love story. This was, I think, the first YeXie story I ever read, and it *haunts me,* I swear, I think about it all the damn time. It's hard to verbalize why, but like... the alchemy between the characters here is so, so good. There's something about the way these two lonely, traumatized boys find comfort and healing in each other, and this story does a magnificent job of showing that warmth and care without losing the characters' sharp edges and claws that are so essential to their authenticity. Gosh, the romance... It's captivating and immersive and it is absolutely the fic that sold me on this pairing and I swear I could re-read it once a week and never get tired of it!
with inexplicable fondness → written by noelia_g → Word of Honor fic
Summary:
Wen Kexing is aware of the following things.
One, Han Ying would die for Zhou Zishu - and Wen Kexing likes that in a man. Two, upon their first meeting Han Ying dropped to his knees before A-Xu the moment Wen Kexing let go of his throat - and that is simply just interesting. Three, Han Ying is A-Xu's in a way no one else is anymore.
That last part, he could find an issue with. Or, he could use it for the best - he is not called Philanthropist Wen for nothing, after all.
Reader Comments:
Okay, so lots of people say "this fic changed my life," but, like, this one actually did. NOT ONLY because Jo is a staggeringly talented writer, and not only because this is one of the hottest threesome fics I've ever encountered in any fandom, ever, in my entire life, but because this fic and my resulting interest in HanWenZhou as a dynamic led me directly to meet a handful of magnificently unhinged people whom I now cannot imagine my life without. (I talk to them every day! Also... um... also we've written some of the most depraved porn I've ever had the joy of coauthoring.) Even if polyships aren't usually your thing I'd urge you to check this story out. You would not BELIEVE how much yearning and devotion and passion and filth and kink and SHEER UNHINGED ROMANCE Jo has managed to cram into less than 18k. It's truly next level and I cannot possibly recommend a story more highly.

A Savory Assortment of Fic Recs Part 1
A list of fics from various fandoms where I have not collected enough entries to justify giving them their own post. Included here you will find fics for Word of Honor and Grave Robber's Chronicles (DMBJ)
Word of Honor
within us an orchard by mintyfish (guckindieluft)
On a visit to the capital, the Valley Master happens upon the garden of a man who has nothing left to live for.
The Tiger and its Skin by manic_intent
The pale beauty on the bed swallowed the bowl of medicine without complaint and handed it silently to the eunuch by the bed. Leaning dizzily against the wall, Zhou Zishu fought yet another bout of nausea, trying to keep down the thin congee that he’d forced down his throat in the morning.
“Wangye,” the eunuch, Qiu Bin, said, sounding uncomfortable.
“Leave.” Zhou Zishu closed his eyes.
“Just… your bride should be on the way. Since the Emperor has refused to postpone the wedding—”
The Parasol Tree by chiiyo86
When Prince Jin sends Zhou Zishu to look for the Glazed Armor, Zhou Zishu's heart isn't in it but he is duty-bound to see this mission through to the end. But then his path crosses the one of Wen Kexing, a mercurial scholar with many secrets of his own, and things only get more complicated from there.
Strays. by orange_crushed
Zishu's mind has been trained to this sort of work: to take in every meaningless detail and produce from that the truth. To assess danger and opportunity alike. Of course, this is a misuse of his talents. Kexing shouldn't concern him. He should be nothing to Zishu: just another foolish boy to mold into a useful weapon, or else to discard. But then, Zishu has seen what's really inside him, the pitiless tiger who lives in his guts. And he might be the only one who has. Kexing let the other boys off with bruises, didn't he?
He is Zishu's, somehow. As much as anything has ever been.
[AU timeline in which teenage runaway Wen Kexing meets career assassin Zhou Zishu and upends both their lives.]
Soulmates and Zombies by nerdyjellyfish
It's WenZhou modern AU with zombies. That's it that's the fic.
Sanguine by jaemyun
Wen Kexing is a puzzle he'd like to figure out, and Zishu himself can't say he isn't also captivated by dark eyes and a smile that wouldn't be out of place with blood in its teeth.
it's not the breaking by Shadaras
Absently, mind on the work he’s doing, Zhou Zishu says, “Shidi, can you—”
His mouth snaps shut on the request, but it’s already too late.
Wen Kexing turns to him and says, “I’m sick of this.” His tone is almost cheerful. There’s still more malice laced through Wen Kexing’s mouth than Zhou Zishu can remember hearing directed towards him before.
It shivers across his body, and Zhou Zishu closes his eyes briefly before carefully setting down the wall-hanging he’d wanted help replacing. “What do you want to do about it?” Zhou Zishu asks, shifting his weight to prepare for the attack he suspects is coming.
Wen Kexing plays with his fan, silently considering him, and then a smile spreads across his face. “I’m going to make you forget that word.”
rage, rage against the dying of the light by Madcap_Miss
The thing about pushing people past their limits is that it makes them dangerous.
It is possible that this is a truth Wen Kexing and Xie Wang neglected to account for when making their grand plan.
Bureaucratically Ever After by TK_DuVeraun
Wen Kexing was chosen to ceremonially marry the immortal in the Journey's End Festival that came around once every one hundred years. It's not a big deal, especially since there's no clause saying he can't hook up with the official walking him through the ceremonies, Zhou Xu.
Dangerous Illusions by manic_intent
Yuanxiao Festival was one of Zhou Zishu’s least favourite times of the year. It wasn’t the problem of thousands of lanterns clogging up the streets and rooftops of the Imperial City, making it more challenging to conduct Tian Chuang business. It wasn’t the throngs of people who packed into the Imperial City from beyond to enjoy the spectacle, or the increased risk of a fire hazard, or the thousands of perfectly edible mandarin oranges being thrown into the river. It wasn’t the fact that Tian Chuang business often ground to a halt during the lunar new year period, leaving Zishu at loose ends. It was all of that, all at once.
to hold your heart in arms by threerings
After the events of Episode 12, Wen Kexing wants to know what Zhou Zishu meant by saying he has a terminal illness. The Seven Nails of Torment are revealed. And feelings are explored.
“How long do you have?”
“About two years.” Pain twisted in his chest as he watched this truth hit Wen Kexing. He felt guilt for doing this to him. Perhaps he should have told him from the beginning, warned him before...before they became so close. It was a truly unfair turn of events, to meet someone and feel this kind of connection, only to find out it was only temporary. He’d wanted to avoid causing just this kind of pain, but had found Wen Kexing so impossible to deflect.
Ill Omens by manic_intent
The drinking game that Zishu had lured Wen Kexing into playing was reaching a dangerous stage, with both of them growing muddled from drink. Yet Zishu still hadn’t yet managed to get the handsome young man beside him to say anything that might hint at the person behind the smiling mask he wore. Surely there was a limit to Kexing’s composure, uncomfortable as it was to have to play such a trick on a person Zishu liked. It reminded him of every story he had ever heard about his kind. Treacherous and selfish, disloyal and ruthless. Distracted, Zishu lost another round, but Kexing’s joyous laughter stole away any disappointment he could feel.
DMBJ
My brain mostly ignored the main characters of this show and hyper-focused in on Liu Sang from the Reboot series, so almost all these recs will feature him in some way with a few PingXie thrown in as a treat.
Cascade by frith_in_thorns
Liu Sang didn't need looking after. Absolutely not. It had only been a small stabbing.
Unfortunately, Wu Xie overrode him.
Even more unfortunately, that was only the start of everyone's problems.
Unreliable Narration by fox_of_nine_tales
Liu Sang can do this.
He’s a professional, after all. That’s why the Iron Triangle brings him on these trips. He can map, and fight, and hold his own. Except now they've been separated from the others, and they're trapped, and Wu Xie's hurt, and their supplies are running low, and Liu Sang -
Liu Sang can do this.
He always has.
Eating Fish Every Day by afrikate
Liu Sang gets a cat.
Worship False idols by Sanctified_Jasper
His Ouxiang doesn't recognise him, that's pretty obvious. Liu Sang hadn't expected him to, he'd changed so much and his Ouxiang... hadn't. A tiny part of him had held out the irrational hope he would though. He's been asked before why he idolises Zhang Qiling, and he knows he'll likely be asked again, Wu Xie is the curious type, with a vested interest in Liu Sang's Ouxiang.
He has the usual lie ready of course, not that it's entirely a lie so much as... not the entire truth. Liu Sang doesn't want to tell anyone ever the real reason he feels so indebted to his Ouxiang.
A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Slutspeare
Yincangui is Where Lost Things Return, and Wu Xie, captain of the Wushanju , has been trying to find it since his uncle went missing fifteen years ago. The only thing is that no one is quite sure that it actually exists, except for Liu Sang, who manages to finagle his way onto Wu Xie's ship and into their quest. Without any solid proof or idea of where they're going, it seems like Yincangui is always going to be a lost dream... unless the crew of the Wushanju can unravel the threads of the universe and lead themselves to what they've been searching for.
It all started with a cup of tea by cease
As a retired man of leisure in his late thirties, Wu Xie didn’t expect the greatest threat to his personal safety and freedom to emerge in the form of the gossiping women in his life. Or: that one time Lao Jiumen almost planned a gay wedding.
I Will Go Now to My Pyre by Kholran
"Within the Nine Clans, the only ones who could open the box were Zhang Da Fo Ye when he was alive...and..." "And me."
Liu Sang is hired by the Huo clan and sent to a Jiumen Association meeting. His job should be simple: Pay close attention to President Zhang and act as a human polygraph. He soon realizes things are never as simple as they seem. Finding himself in the middle of a political power grab, Liu Sang makes a choice. He hopes it's the right one.
Reach for their scabbards by afrikate
After a disaster of a job, something finally goes Liu Sang's way.
Subterfuge by frith_in_thorns
"It's me," Liu Sang said, and then realised he hadn't considered at all how to actually go about this surreptitiously. Probably Wu Xie had tons of secret signals to use in this sort of circumstance, but that wasn't the type of thing Liu Sang thought of arranging ahead of time.
All the maps were wrong by frith_in_thorns
On the way back from Thunder City, Liu Sang is struggling more than he wants to admit.
Feline, fearless, faithful and true by Humanlighthouse
Wuxie is Fine. Until a cat appears in his life, that is.
can't forget (don't remember what) by laireshi
"Wu Xie," Zhang Qiling breathes, letting his tone convey the questions: are you all right, does anything hurt, do you need help?
". . . who are you?" Wu Xie asks.
The Fox's Geometry by fox_of_nine_tales
He was named Liu Sang, once, but his name was the first thing they took from him.
Li Cu vs Life by margrave
A series about Li Cu's life post Sha Hai, and his continual wrong assumption that Xiaoge is Wu Xie's ex-boyfriend.
Those who fear darkness have never seen what light can do by Merinnan, xantissa
When Wu Xie was seven years old, he snuck away from his guardian during one of the digs that Sanshu took him to. Only things went wrong, the entrance collapsed, and it took a week to dig the child out from the near collapsed tomb.
They expected a body. They prayed that the child had somehow survived, but seven days without food or water for an adult would have been deadly, a child had no chances of survival at all.
They found Wu Xie deep in the tomb, sleeping on his little backpack. He was warm and healthy, confused at why the adults were yelling, looking like he’d just stepped into the tomb five minutes ago.
Tabula Rasa by xantissa
Zhang Qiling forgets. Then he comes to some interesting conclusions regarding his relationship to the man named Wu Xie.
All Nature Has A Feeling by margrave
After the City of Thunder, Wu Xie goes on his last major adventure: solving a mystery about his life that he has questioned for over fifteen years.
The consequences of the adventure leaves Zhang Qiling questioning their relationship, and Wu Xie.
rip out the whole of your soul love by laireshi
Wu Xie had told Xiaoge, because he hadn't expected how hard it would be to deal with Xiaoge's continuously voiceless, contained reaction; his unwavering support and hidden emotions and mute heartbreak.
Cat's Paw by Merinnan, xantissa
He had already been informed that he was supposed to get down into the temple and start tracking the rival team that had got there before them. The rival team who, according to what he’d overheard, had been the ones responsible for the dozen or so mercenaries now leaving the village in body bags.
Mr. Jiao had been very polite and congenial when he told Liu Sang that he was going to hunt down that team that went down first. It hadn’t been a question, and the mercenary with the rifle pointed vaguely in Liu Sang’s direction was a very clear, if unspoken, indication of what would happen to Liu Sang if he refused.
Mr. Jiao’s people controlled the only way in and out of the village, and they also controlled all the vehicles. Liu Sang could continue to be one of Mr. Jiao’s people, or he could be one of the dead bodies loaded into the truck.
-
Before Wu Erbai could hire on Liu Sang, Liu Sang had already accepted an offer from Mr. Jiao. What he found when arriving for that job, however, was nothing what he expected - particularly the fact that it turned out that he was now working against the man he'd idolized for so long.

thank you for your post recommending/saying you liked my fic. that means the world to me, made my whole week! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. It’s one I’m most proud of and it makes me happy to hear others appreciate it. 🥹
im so happy to hear you're proud of it the most. it really has a special kind of magic about it and i think im gonna think about it for a while. i need to confess something though!!! at the time that you dropped into my inbox, i had not yet read the fic! i sometimes rec fics without reading them first. i like to keep to my own pace of reading, and wlw fics are uh complicated for me for reasons. i was going to read it one way or another, i just needed a bit of time. im glad you reminded me of it because i completely forgot it exists! before replying to you i went over to ao3 and read it in one sitting, so i could properly answer you. (i dropped you a comment too where im going a bit more in detail about what i loved the most.) yes, i am indeed so very much in love with it, i enjoyed it a lot! thank you for sharing it! if you ever write something similar, im gonna eat that up as well!
if any of the silly peoples who sometimes read my posts would like to check it out: this is a wlw wenzhou alternative universe: war fic where zhou "war general" zishu has crossdressing shenanigans going and wen kexing is the beautiful, scheming, deadly older sister of the valley master. they get wived for reasons

Number 48 for the ask game please
Oooh, yay, another ask for the ask game!
48. What’s the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?
NICE. Okay, I'm going to cheat, because it's still morning and I have already read two fics, both of which deserve recs. Plus, then I can cover two fandoms.
I recommend both of these, lemme just say that up front.
~~~
intrigue and intimacies - Word of Honor fandom, oneshot, rated Explicit Author: @fractured-ice
I literally JUST finished this wonderful oneshot. It's no secret that I love the HanWenZhou OT3. This is a pre-canon AU that explores a "what if" between Zhou Zishu and Han Ying, with Qin Jiuxiao acting as wingman. Actually, I say it's a oneshot, but it's the third part in a series now. However, it still stands alone quite nicely. In short, Han Ying and Zhou Zishu are still at the beginning of their relationship, and they find they need some alone time.
~~~
Drowning Like a Stone - KinnPorsche fandom, WIP ch 8/19, rated Teen Author: @nyxelestia
An exploration of post canon, focusing on Chay's experiences but also dovetailing into Big's experiences. It's DELICIOUS, really thoughtfully done. Great character explorations all around. Gyaaa, I really need to know what happens next.
~~~
Mmm, delicious fics.
Thanks for asking! Ask game questions.
Three short stories about a young Wei Ying
These stories involve fusions with other danmei works.
A Water King's Boy by Cafe_Smut
Archive warning: Major Character Death
Módào Zǔshī | Tiān Guān Cì Fú fusion 2k words
In this unexpected short story, a god is prayed to and an answer is given. Well, perhaps not a god …
“Hi, i’m- not sure if im doin’ this right.” freezing mid chew, he blinks. ‘My A-Die says in his home they pray to the Water Master, but A-Nian says he bad. I dunno what ta do, but i don’t like how that temple feel but i find this and it had a ‘bone fishy’ like A-Nian said you had.
Author Cafe_Smut briefly shows us the life and death of Wei Wuxian through four encounters with Hè Xuán, Black Water Submerging Boats.
This is part of a series titled Danmei Soup & Salad. I found this story after reading the first story in that series.
Spirited Away by PhantomWriter
Word of Honor | Módào Zǔshī fusion 2k word
White. White as the storm of snow. Long white hair and robes billowed in the harsh wind. A ghost, Wei Ying thought immediately. He had heard of tales of a white ghost around the town, one that would eat unruly children who strayed out of their beds late at night. He used to believe that the white ghost had yet to find him, though now that he was found, oddly enough, he was not afraid.
Author PhantomWriter writes about a young Wei Ying, found during a raging snowstorm.
This is part of a series, also called Spirited Away. I found the series after reading the second story in the series, Hereafter with Wei Wuxian attending the Gusu Lectures.
Things Not Left Unsaid by Katana_Pistol
Módào Zǔshī | Tiān Guān Cì Fú fusion 2k words
Even though his legs were bleeding from the dog bites and his feet and hands were dirty, Wei Ying ran out and collided with the ugly man. “Leave him alone!” Wei Ying shouted, trying to raise his voice to sound more threatening. “Stop being mean! It’s not right!”
In which young Wei Ying comes to the assistance of a scrap seller being assaulted in Yiling and ends up with a new family.
A nice start to what could be planned as a larger work.
A Little Foolishness by @rustycreekspoon
🪭 liu qianqiao/shen shen, a canon divergent rarepair treat
🪭 acceptance; choices; growth; salvation and corruption, hand in hand
🪭 a chance meeting can change everything
He has no flowery words for her at all, not a single ridiculous opening line. Only straightforward concern in all its simplicity, and even Yan Gui is not immune to it.
She's a fool to sit there with him. He was a fool to sit with her in the first place.
A little bit of foolishness is exactly what she needs.
Fic: a jackal; a thief
Author: brawlite
Fandom: Word of Honor
Pairing: Wen Kexing/Ye Baiyi
Rating: Explicit
Length: 10719
Recommendation: This is incredibly well told and profoundly intimate - a sex pollen adjacent fic, this deals in dubious consent and fuck or die, but it’s also a character piece about how Wen Kexing treats intimacy. This is definitely a case of “mind the tags” but a worthwhile read.
