Im in the mood for a modern au fic where lwj and wwx are in a committed relationship but break up due to wwx over-committment to the wens or jiangs. It can be because they dont get to spend enough time together or its taking a toll on wwx and they fight about it. Whatever it is - i want wwx to be the one who realises things and has to make amends. Happy endings ofcourse.

I have seen many fics along this plot line BUT lwj is always the one apologizing and putting in the extra effort to be accommodating. It might just be me but i dont think thats fair. So pleeeeeeease recommend some fics where wwx puts in the work to fix things

KILF (Knits I'd Like To Fuck in) by ScarlettStorm (E, 168k, wangxian, modern, sex work, fiber arts, 2nd in series) is a long fic but it has a fight at the end of chapter 17 which is related to WWX being overcommitted (partly to JWY, I guess), and he has to be the one to try and make that right. They don’t break up, but it is a significant fight.

a frog stares at him from the bright lake touched by the moonlight , a clear night and warm weather ; thankfully . xue yang wasn't sure if he would survive the chill of the mountain just wearing these stupid robes that didn't even cover up his arms warmly enough . idiots , first rule of meditating is to feel comfortable — or whatever . he winces , rubs his bruised wrists before wetting the soft cloth in the lake's water . lan qiren didn't give him a headband , out of his grudge or because he was a special little case , it didn't matter because xue yang simply grinned it off . they look like they're designed for girls , anyway . he's so lost in trying to reach the leash marks bleeding on his back to hear xingchen's footsteps until he sees him walk toward the bright spring . . . he gives him a smile while he's panting . maybe he should just get inside the water instead of trying to clean the blood off . ❛ daozhang . came for a swim ? ❜ did they tell him he's sneaked inside the forbidden library ? if the cloud recesses didn't hold the information he needed to create his own , original spell to bring a pair of lovely eyes back , then xue yang isn't sure where he could find it . he washes the red cloth on the water , pushes away his hair from one bare shoulder as he mumbles ; ❛ did you eat from the lotus cake lan wangji brought ? it was horrible . the lengths he's going to impress yilling laozu , so funny . he's not even close to what wei wuxian is . ❜ isn't that funny ; is he even remotely close to the beauty of xiao xingchen ? does he have any connections to the moon and gentleness of spring winds ? xue yang respects wei ying , more than anyone perhaps . there were nights he'd lay awake and wonder with eyes wide open – how did wei wuxian do such remarkable things ? he pauses momentarily , smiles with a lock of brown hair half-blocking his left eye . moonlight looks incredibly ugly compared to xingchen , tonight ; ❛ are you here for another set of leash hits ?? daozhang . have mercy . i haven't even eaten my dinner . ❜

They did tell him.

They tell him everything Xue Yang does and does not do, because Xiao XingChen vouches for him, a demonic cultivator, another one nonetheless, not quite as mad as the Grandmaster himself, but still as loathed via association alone, bringing Lan QiRen just one step closer to considering the very cultivation world itself lost.

Xiao XingChen knows, not so much painfully as begrudgingly well, that it's most likely his name that had gotten Xue Yang this spot Xiao XingChen had been the one to even demand for him.

It was a necessity.

One more step to fulfill the act that Xue Yang needed redemption he hadn't already fulfilled. One more move to make sure everyone to look at them walking as a pair would see that Xiao XingChen was doing a right and just thing... and that it wasn't his heart that came up with all these conclusions, all the different ways he could justify being as tightly bound to Xue Yang as Xue Yang decided to be bound to him.

So, yes.

They did tell him.

Because he demands to know.

And is he surprised?

No.

Xue Yang didn't become who he became or do what he did, and Xiao XingChen would not even be here, alive to mull over the past and whatnot, if it weren't for Xue Yang's knack for breaking rules and doing as he pleases. He couldn't quite tell how much of it was ingrained into his very character, and how much came to be as a vengeance towards the world that took so much effort to break him into becoming a demonic cultivator in the first place.

Fact is fact, that's all he knows, and if Xue Yang breaks a rule, well... Xiao XingChen can only be glad it was one coupled with a thirst for knowledge as opposed to a massacre waiting to happen.

Perhaps that is why he isn't here to scold him. Xiao XingChen spent a lot of time on a different kind of mountain. Baoshan Sanren had been just as disciplined and strict, but she never presented them with walls covered in thousands upon thousands of rules. The rules they were meant to follow, people like him, people like Song Lan, were implicit, intertwined into the behaviours they were taught to mimic.

Or... in other words, Xiao XingChen doesn't actually respect GusuLan as much as he pretends to, to guarantee Xue Yang a spot here.

The alternative, aforementioned Baoshan Sanren, was not an option - he couldn't return a second time - if he wanted to be around to keep people off Xue Yang's back and away from whatever reaction he would muster to having his toes stepped on.

Whichever sounds closer to the truth.

"You seem to hold quite a bit of reverie for Wei WuXian," Xiao XingChen says, as he seeks out the spot Xue Yang is talking from and assesses it coming close enough to the ground to consider him seated. He lowers himself to the ground nearby, and feels around for the air to turn into bare skin until he knows how much closer he needs to shift.

His fingers brush Xue Yang's arm and he pulls them back as if scalded, revealing no more than that until he's sat directly behind his... his... his?

His tone is carefully neutral. There's no reason for him to believe Wei WuXian and him are in anyway connected to one another, most likely placed in two different categories within Xue Yang's mind. He can't help but wonder, though, how likely Xue Yang would be to break more serious rules, just for a chance to learn from the Grandmaster of the cultivation he's known for.

"Don't be ridiculous," Xiao XingChen adds to the... well, ridiculous suggestion of himself appearing to add more punishment to Xue Yang's already marred back. He may not know what it looks like, but he heard it. And he's heard of how exactly GusuLan thinks discipline can be ingrained into its guest disciples.

One of the many reasons he doesn't like working with sects.

He finds Xue Yang's arm again and pinches the underside he can reach, hardly an action worth of note, just a way to pretend he's annoyed as opposed to all the other things he typically feels around him.

Conflicting and dissonant as they may be.

"Let me help you," his fingertips ghost along and upwards until Xue Yang's arm bends into a shoulder, and then carefully down the first inches of the expanse of his back. He's careful to make sure he's not pushing or adding pressure where the marks start, terrible things as exaggerated as some suggest demonic cultivation to be.

"I may not be able to see, but I've treated wounds of yours before. Then we can eat dinner."

Why didn't the murder of Chang Ping cause more shockwaves? Someone murdered in the most cruel way possible the last surviving member of a dreadful case concerning Xue Yang (which JGY believes to be dead), a demonic cultivator (which might get Jiang Cheng's attention), who was presumably executed by the Chief Cultivator precisely for the crime of murdering said Chang clan (so Nie Huaisang may want to snuff out a bit to get dirt on him). Lan "goes where chaos is" Wangji is presumably out of the ice by then, so he might want to take a look as well.

And even after the "investigation" concluded the sword used for the crime was Shuanghua, wouldn't that still cause a lot of talking? The last male disciple of Baoshan Sanren became a dark evil overlord, and if Xiao Xingchen really is the man responsible for this snafu, they might as well start looking for him to make sure he won't cause trouble in the future!

It does seem to have been a pretty massive deal! But I guess there are a few factors here.

Chang Ping had already been pressured into recanting, which I think can't be overlooked as a factor that would have taken the pressure off, first because some people would probably just accept the recantation, and those who were suspicious of it would probably recognize that it happened because somebody pressured him in a very compelling way, and what if they decided to turn that pressure on anyone else who spoke out about the matter? There's also Chang Ping himself turning down the pressure (quote from the wiki, I think from the official translation): "What can I do aside from this? If I don't tolerate it, the rest of our clan's people wouldn't be safe for long. I'm really grateful, Daozhang, but… please don't help me anymore. Now, helping me would be harming me. I don't want the Yueyang Chang Clan to end yet."

So Chang Ping has deliberately turned attention away from the case by the time he's murdered, and presumably brushed off anyone who tried to raise it or help in the interim. Suspicious, obviously, and he doesn't even try to hide it! But see above-- what would happen to anyone else who tried to push?

The fact that it's supposedly Xiao Xingchen does seem like it should be compelling, and I actually do kind of like how the donghua frames the whole thing as this "what the hell, why did Xiao Xingchen murder somebody?" mystery at first. But the fact that he's this wandering rogue cultivator seems really key-- nobody knows where to find him, nobody is responsible for him, and now there's nobody alive to pressure anyone to do anything about it. And then he doesn't seem to cause any further problems, so it's easy to forget.

It's intended in large part, I'd argue, as commentary on the society at large: without someone as blunt and righteous as Nie Mingjue applying pressure, cases like this just... disappear. Xiao Xingchen took revenge on the guy who recanted his accusation on a murder XXC really stuck his neck out to uncover, seems a bit out of character, but oh well, people change. Seems like he got it out of his system, not our problem.

I do think documented Bright Moon and Gentle Breeze stan Lan Wangji of CQL could easily have gone to investigate, but it does seem like this may have been relatively recently after he left seclusion. And honestly one of my favorite performance moments in CQL is how even just talking about this whole situation clearly just makes Lan Wangji so, so sad. At the end of the day, maybe he was showing a bit of side of him that's more like Lan Xichen: he couldn't change it, so he just didn't want to know.

funniest part is that i don’t think xy REGISTERS what he’s doing as flirty he just knows that that’s the sort of talk that gets reactions from people (usually angry) and he wants xxc, the bright moon and gentle breeze, to have a reaction to him that’s not quiet and measured and annoyingly PERFECT. he KNOWS that xxc could be amazing to watch if he somehow became unhinged and by god he wants to be the one to take those hinges off.

No, reincarnations only happen in the verse when a deceased character has an "unfinished" bond with someone from their previous life, whether alive or dead. Qin Su died without any regrets in her existing relationships, so she passed on quickly and never looked back.

Wuji Refrain Breakdown/Translation

I feel like every time I hear the refrain of the cql end theme I break a little because the feeling of mourning and missing and loving overwhelms me.

煮一壶生死悲欢祭少年郎

EVERY TIME this line starts playing my heart just stops. The imagery it invokes SO freakishly sad.

煮 - boil/cook

一 - a

壶 - pot

生 - life/birth

死 - death

悲 - sorrow

欢 -joy

祭 - sacrifice/memorialize

少 - small/young/few

年 - years

郎 - man/boy, used also as part of the binome meaning groom (新郎), sometimes used to address a male significant other.

So all together i would translate it as

“Boiling a pot of life’s breadth of feelings to memorialize a young man I loved”

The idea of “boiling a pot of” I associate with alcohol. A lot of old school booze was ingested warm. And that echoes the character for sacrifice/memorialize since alcohol is often poured onto the ground to memorialize people. Pour one out for the dead, right?

And the phrase 生死悲欢 actually echoes a song dynasty poem by su dong po where he says “ 人有悲欢离合，月有阴晴圆缺 humans suffer sorrow, joy, union, and separation and the moon has clear and overcast days, waxes and wanes”. The union and separation part of the phrase about people got replaced by life and death -- LWJ and WWX’s specific union and separation.

So the image this line paints in my head is snow slowly falling outside the jingshi. LWJ with his hair down, tending to a pot of emperor’s smile. Tears are probably flowing down his face but no one is there to see it so it’s ok. He pours out the emperor’s smile -- all of it -- and looks up at the moon and says something to WWX. And in his head, there is zero question that WWX is the youth he loved.

明月依旧何来怅惘

So this continues from the previous line where LWJ pours out the pot of liquor and thinks of wwx. He stares at the moon and he asks the moon about his feelings.

明- bright

月- moon

依旧- still/as before/ unchanged (two characters are aligned with and old)

何 - what/why

来 - come

怅惘 - listless/distracted

“The moon still shines bright, so from whence does my listlessness come?”

This echos poetry by Li Bai, Su Dongpo, Wang Anshi, Wang Changling, and basically anyone of note in chinese poetry. The image of a bright moon is often associated with wistful longing, missing loved ones, and inexplicable sorrow. Examples (via haoppo’s quick translation and any additional notes i think are relevant):

秦时明月汉时关，万里长征人未还。——王昌龄《出塞》

The bright moon since Qin and the Pass since Han, 10000 li traveling, the people have not returned.

( this is a poem about war. the moon and the pass symbolize how war has been continuous since these have existed. The 10000 li represents the distance between China proper and the borders. The people not returning are the soldiers. OOOOOF.)

明月几时有，把酒问青天。——苏轼《水调歌头》

When will the next bright moon be? I lift my liquor to ask the deep blue sky.

(This poem is ICONIC. It’s the on same one as where 人有悲欢离合，月有阴晴圆缺 is from. It’s very commonly associated with Mid Autumn Festival. The whole point of the festival is to look at the moon and realize everyone you love that is still alive is able to see that same moon. Sweet, sentimental, wistful)

春风又绿江南岸，明月何时照我还？——王安石《泊船瓜洲》

The spring breeze has brought greenness to the lands of Jiangnan. When will the moon’s light guide me home?

(Jiangnan means south of the river. It’s a region in china south of the yangtze. Iconic because it includes Shanghai, Nanjing (nanking), Hangzhou, Suzhou, etc. Jiangnan is where a lot of cultural things happened in south china. Hangzhou and Suzhou are two of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL cities. There’s a saying that in the sky there is heaven and on earth we have hangzhou and suzhou. I can go on about this but this isn’t a post about how freaking much i love traveling in jiangnan.)

我寄愁心与明月，随风直到夜郎西。——李白《闻王昌龄左迁龙标遥有此寄》

I mail my sorrowful heart and bright moon, via wind, directly to west Yelang

(I didn’t want to use the standard bright moon and frost poem we get whenever we think of Li Bai. But i also couldn’t not include Li Bai! So this one! Li Bai’s writing is pretty clear he has feels and he’s sending them to west Yelang. But what is west Yelang? It’s where his friend is! The poem is basically, hey, i heard you were at this palace so i’m writing you a poem and telling you how i want to be with you!)

So the next line is a tone shift and it’s more of a promise, IMO. This is WWX and LWJ’s wish. Not as heartbreaking but still part of the refrain so i want to include this in my post.

不如潇潇洒洒历遍风和浪

This part is a MOOD and hard to translate. I will try to at least explain it.

不如 - not as good as/would rather

潇潇洒洒 - freely/natural/easy/unrestrained (ope, isn’t this just wuji? :P)

历 - experience/weather

遍 - through

风 - wind

和 - and

浪 - waves

“I would rather freely experience all of life’s dangers.”

So, 潇潇洒洒 is just a MOOD. It’s the mood of a rogue cultivator untethered to rules. It’s the mood of the legendary masters in Wuxia Jianghu who does what they want and are completely at ease. They wander through towns righting wrongs and standing up for justice and then leave without a trace. It’s the feeling of wind in your hair as you stand at the top of a hill on a crisp day. It’s free of stress and pain and suffering. I think the closest thing i’ve seen in english is something like “footloose and fancy free” but without the romantic connotations.

And then the experience + through basically means experience all of or experience thoroughly.

And wind + waves is a way of saying hardships, danger, or trials: the wind blows and waves come, the waves bring the ups and downs of life. I love how chinese words are very imagery based.

天涯一曲共悠扬

tiān yá yì qǔ gòng yōu yang

天涯 - end of the earth (literally sky + cliff)

一 - a

曲 - song/tune

共 - together

悠扬 - melodious (leisurely + spread)

“Playing a melody together to the end of the earth.”

And this part of the song invokes the last scene of the show where WWX is playing a flute ON A CLIFF (note, end of earth = sky + cliff). I’m positive he’s there waiting for LWJ and trying to hasten LWJ’s appearance by playing THEIR SONG.

Ok. I’m done. I’m going to go listen to this song and TRY NOT TO CRY. And it’s ONLY 4 LINES of the song! The rest of it is just as bad. Gaaaaaaaah. SO MANY FEELS.
