saw the question of “how long does it take rvb to pass the bechdel test” and i got curious and also wanted to make myself mad so.

my answer is Reconstruction: Chapter 5 (s6e5). there’s a recorded conversation between sheila and tex about the ship crashing.

my answer with no caveats is Evacuation Plan (s9e4). carolina, 479er, filss and south all participate in a conversation that takes up a good chunk of the episode.

i talk a LOT more about the state of female character interactions under the cut.

the first time two women talk at all is s2e11/bgc30:

sheila bisexual moments. while iconic, this isn’t much of a conversation (tex doesn’t ever speak to her) and it’s certainly about a man so. doesn’t count. next!

next is s3e1/bgc39:

while here it’s implied that they are actually having a conversation at least we still don’t actually see any exchanges between them and they’re still talking about men and quote “Boring stuff like oppression, and a hostile work environment.” which is great but. a) we don’t see it. and b) again, still about men

next is tex and kai’s exchange in season 5. which is misogynistic as fuck and even if it did pass the bechdel test i would refuse to count it. but guess what! not only are they talking about men, but we literally do not see them talk to each other. kai speaks to tex “who’s o’malley?” but tex doesn’t respond to her, instead asking the guys “who’s the girl?” (s5e10/bgc92). then they talk in the background of the next episode while church and tucker are misogynistic. then it’s two more episodes until we get this gem

y’know, girl stuff! how fucking charming. these writers really have a great grasp on how woman act. god, it’s even worse when compared to tex and sheila’s conversation earlier. in what world would tex be fucking intimidated by kai.

and you know what the joke of this all is. even if they did have a conversation here that passed the bechdel test it still wouldn’t count under some rule sets because kai still doesn’t have a name at this point. great work team.

s5e15/bgc92 has a deleted scene where kai calls up a girl friend and they talk… i’m not counting it because 1) kai is as of yet unnamed and the girl friend is never named, 2) the conversation is ostensibly about junior, though they do talk about other stuff enough that you could argue it’s not about a man, but 3) it’s deleted. you don’t get credit for shit you deleted.

next time two women talk to each other is recovery one episode 4. this is the first time we see two women have an actual, back and forth conversation. the conversation is between south and commamd about wash, delta, and the fact that south isn’t rejoining freelancer. i do think this conversation fits the spirit of the bechdel test (two women talking to each other with deeper characterizations unmoored from being about men) but that’s only really by technicality. command isn’t a character here and doesn’t become one for another 4 seasons; the conversation is only retroactively a deeper one. it’s up to you whether or not you pass it. i think it’s important to remember that the bechdel test isn’t really a hard test to determine what’s feminist (and was made in the first place to be about queer women being able to see themselves in media) but rather a marker to help sort out if the female characters in a work are allowed any depth outside of men. this exercise is less about finding a scene fitting exact criteria and more about. me going oh god it really is fucking bad out there huh.

my actual pick, as i said in the beginning, is s6e5. though tex mentions gamma and the aliens, the conversation is still about the fact that the ship is crashing. and in terms of the spirit of the test, two women yelling at each other as they die definitely fits definitely fits “deeper character motivations outside of men” imo. it’s. kind of really sad though. the first time we ever see tex and sheila have an actual conversation is the last time we really see either of them, chronologically. we only got to see them have a relationship as they were dying. why couldn’t they have been friends in life.

if a recorded conversation isn’t good enough for you, you’ll have to wait until s8e15. season 7 does not have a single woman in it. tεx and filss talk about pfl’s files. it’s not exactly an in depth back and forth and the conversation is shared with simmons and church but. it’s something. i think sheila and tex’s convo fits the spirit of the test a bit more but. let’s chalk it up to two conversations in the 8 seasons. fantastic.

all right, season 9 time. come on, a third of the main cast is women! that’s gotta bring our numbers up, right?

episode 1? no. 2? no. 3?

incredible! we have a conversation between female operative and pilot! just kidding. the wiki doesn’t name them bc they haven’t been named yet, but this is a conversation between carolina and niner! no funny business! just an actual conversation between woman! wow. only took us nine seasons to get to a point where i can confidently say something passes the bechdel test with no caveats. unless we look at the 60 second rule. then. oops.

but… wow! episode 4 has… THREE women? talking to each other? and then a fourth joins in? i thought it was a myth! being able to handle so many women on screen at once… they really did something special here. anyway, this episode is the first to pass with flying colors. i can’t time shut bc i don’t have the videos on hand but i’m certain this passes the 60 second mark. great work! if only it didn’t take you nine years to get to this point.

ugh. i had more written past this point but tumblr erased it and i don’t feel like fucking redoing it. i got to the point i wanted to so. maybe i’ll continue this later. would like to explore the rest of pfl and chorus. it’s impressive how well pfl manages to avoid having women actually speak to each other. they’ll literally be in the same conversation but never actually address each other. this happens multiple times.

Favourite bsd *female* character?

All of them LMAO. But Kyouka holds a special place in my heart <3 I mean, I think she's quite objectively the best written female character in this series, if anything because she gets an actual character arc beyond the two occasional chapters of spotlight. I really like the inherent duality of her character in being both a skilled assassin and a little girl (and how it can be both tragic and hilarious! The versatility). Her character arc is sincerely compelling, I'm a sucker for any character who's just doing their very best to be a good person even when it feels like going against their nature. Her backstory is so tragic! Her relationship with her ability is so interesting! But I just love how truly… Strong-willed she is, how determined and resolute she can be; she's truly inspiring. If you ask me, she's got that charm of magical girls anime: sometimes you really need to see little girls defeat unimaginable evils with the power of love to heal your heart. And the fact that she doesn't really fit the trope of happy-go-lucky girl is all the more capturing!! Again, I really love the interior conflict - or coexistence - between her dark, ruthless side, and the side that likes bunnies and crepes and girly things; it makes her so authentically and unmistakably Kyouka. I appreciate how she's the only character who can sort of keep up with the protagonist role to ss/kk and s/kk, and she's only 14 eheh. And I LOVE her interactions with the other characters, so much!!!! I adore her relationship with Atsushi (truly. Not even remotely close to how much I talk about them), and I feel like they truly deserve each other in a lot of ways. The way Kyouka's sharp attitude and blunt personality fit and mitigate Atsushi's eternal indecisiveness and insecurity and the way Atsushi reminds Kyouka every day that she can do good and that she is good. How they saved each other and how they keep saving each other every day. I've said it a lot of times that Atsushi is profoundly selfish and that all good actions he does are to be traced back to some twisted conception of self-survival, but if there's really anyone Atsushi loves selflessly and unconditionally, that has to be Kyouka. If there is such a thing as platonic soulmates, Kyouka and Atsushi definitely are for me; they're just so siblings in a way I can't even put in words. AND AND AND her relationship with Akutagawa I've talked about endlessly before!!! Her relationship with Dazai!!! KOUYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Kyouka and Kouyou chapter my beloved aka the only bsd chapter to pass the Bechdel test). Omg potentially Yosano!!!!! Kenji Kenji Kenji!!!!!!!!! I just. Love Kyouka a lot okay she gets me emotional. Kyouka supremacy forever. (Also, she's dubbed by beloved tpn Emma va Sumire Morohoshi :') )

One female character you'd want to rewrite?

Ah, as of now, definitely Teruko. Here's the story I imagine her having: she fought the Great War by Fukuchi's side, as her second in command; despite what her appearance may have looked like back then, she's about the same age as him. She doesn't love or worship him, but she surely admires him a lot; they were comrades and she learnt from him a lot of her ideals on how soldierse have to stain their hands and do horrible, ruthless things in order for the majority of citizens to live safe and happy. She learnt to adore the cause because of him, and she's very loyal to her uniform. She started dressing as a young girl after the war ended, as a way to negate the cruel and traumatic experience of war in her mind and withdraw to the unknowing, happy times of childhood (while still staying her and self-aware; it's just an ephemeral relief). The rest of the story proceeds pretty much as it is in canon, but when Fukuchi reveals to her that he's actually a terrorist working with the doa, she doesn't side with him. She actually feels throughout betrayed, because he had been this pillar of justice and integrity for her, and knowing he was actually a terrorist left her shell-shocked. She DOES act like she's following him, because she is smart and experienced and she knows that she can't take him on her own (differently from Tachihara and Jouno who faced him alone with no backup. Lol. They're a little stupid.), and waits for the moment he lets his guard down to strike and impale him. AND NOT BECAUSE HE ASKED HER TO. WHICH IS HONESTLY TERRIBLE UNDER EVERY ASPECT. Insert here a flashback with her backstory and how Fukuchi himself taught her that justice comes before anything else, because it's the prime tool to serve citizens and pursue world peace. Interior turmoil and trauma for killing the person she respects the most ensues. Now that's how I would write Teruko, because I care about her.

Female character you see the most wasted potential in?

Probably Naomi!!! I love how sly and ingenious she is even in spite of not having an ability, I really hope we'll get to see more of her. I like the theory of her being a projection of Jun'ichirou's ability, although I acknowledge it's problematic in the way it takes away even more agency from her character; even then, it would be cool if she took the form of some kind of sentient ability like Gab in 55 Minutes, or if Jun'ichirou himself was a projection of Naomi (eh. a girl can dream). I really like @frankenjoly's headcanon that she and Mori would be besties, I think about it a lot ahah, I can really see it.

ALSO Higuchi and her ability C'MON I know it's there!!! It MUST be there because bsd so far has been following a very strict pattern where all characters named after writers have abilities, while non ability users are named after novels' characters or non-writers irl people (not to talk about Sakunosuke Oda's The Literature of Possibility passage that's mentioned at the start of the Dark Era novel, with the novel creating a DIRECT connection between writers irl and ability users in the bsd world). I really really hope after this arc is over we'll get an Higuchi arc!!!!

That said, pretty all characters I feel have wasted potential pffttt. Give Lucy and Yosano more screentime!! BRING KOUYOU BACK!!!!!! Finally elaborate on Agatha who's the only female organization leader!!!!! Gin!!!!!!! Wells!!!!!!!!!!

Journey Across the Disneyverse: Second Day

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Animation Studios, I'm rewatching some of my favorite films from the studio.

This were the ones that I watched today.

1 - Peter Pan (1953)

I will say something that will revogue my status as Disney nerd and Disney adult: this film is very weak.

Mary Blair artwork is still beautiful and amazing, and the animation is very well done. Neverland is a delight to the eyes.

But I feel like it lacks heart, it lacks a genuine emotional connection. Something is missing here.

The thing that gets on my nerves is that it lacks a proper ending. On Disney+ they had a deleted ending, and it feels so much more like an actual resolution that this movie's ending.

Wendy gets to say farewell to Peter, she and her brothers get to choose to grow up, while Peter and the lost boys get to choose Neverland. Wendy also is in better terms with Tinkerbell. Peter and Wendy also had an amazing romantic tension.

All of this would make the movie so much better.

2 - Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Disney reached storytelling maturity with this one. This is the ultimate fairy tale movie.

They transformed an already iconic fairy tale in an action-packed epic love story.

Despite giving name to the film, Aurora isn't the protagonist. She is a living McGuffing that drives the plot.

The real protagonists are the three good fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Meriwether, who deserve much more recognition from Disney itself and from fans. It's amazing how they are the main responsible for the movie passing the Bechdel test, even though some still decry the movie as sexist.

3 - The Little Mermaid (1989)

Blessed be Howard Ashman.

This film modernized the Disney formula with amazing effects.

It's definitely not the somber, tragic love story from the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, but it manages to create its own thing, a colorful and vibrant coming-of-age, romantic comedy.

I hate how the same people who decry past Disney heroines for being so bland and super perfect, crap on Ariel only because she acts like a genuine flawed, curious teenage girl.

4 - Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Blessed be Howard Ashman again.

What I loved most about this film is that it flips the original message of the fairy tale on its head.

A thing must be lovable first before it's loved. Love must be earned. You can't act like a beast and still force people to look past your obvious toxic flaws.

Belle is under no obligation to love the Beast. She isn't at any moment forced to look past his toxic behavior. It's the Beast who has to improve himself in order to gain her affection. He is the one who has to change.

True love is liberating, and not trapping. Beast might be the one who trapped Belle in his castle, but it's only when he gives her freedom and autonomy that Belle reciprocates his affection.

I love how the filmmakers confirmed over the years that if the curse weren't broken, Beast would go full Queen Elinor from Pixar Brave, and become a full beast. All the castle staff would become fully inanimated and die. Yet, Beast still puts Belle's wellbeing over his, letting her go, knowing full well that this would kill him and everyone on the castle.

Because true love is selfless, not selfish.

I also love how this film dials down the creepiness of the fairy tale by adding hundred of sidekicks on Beast's Castle.

If Belle were to be completely alone with the Beast, then we would have the child-friendly version of that scifi movie with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. But if Belle has actual people to make her company, people who often go completely against their master's orders, then things are less Stockholm-ism.

“I usually know more than my counterpart” i mocked armin to mikasa for the fifth time in the past twenty minutes.

we were back at our dorm and i was yelling about armin again. we were both up to our necks in homework and were taking a break to recharge before we retreated back into our bedrooms to continue.

mikasa threw her hands up.

“i know he bothers you but you have to work together, if i have to hear this for the rest of the semester i will move out.”

mikasa considers her words.

“no, i would make you move out.”

i playfully hit her arm with the arm with the pillow i was hugging which sent titan running across the floor.

“mikasa, i know” i rubbed my hands over my eyes. “that’s what makes it so much worse. i know i have to work with him.”

but i had complete grounds to complain about armin when all mikasa did was talk about eren. around the dorm these days we could never pass the bechdel test.

“guess who i ran into today?” mikasa perked up, changing the subject.

“taking a wild guess i would have to say eren,” i shook my head, what could it be this time.

last time mikasa came home running to tell me eren held the door for the person in front of her. which does in fact mean he didn’t hold it open for her, whether he purposely didn’t hold it open for her or not i would never know. especially with the unique ways she has for spinning things.

“so, you know how i signed up to give tutoring because i need some extra cash?” mikasa started to fiddle with her coffee mug in her hands like she had been up to something.

i tried to wrack my brain, so she didn't mean eren…

“i’m not sure i follow,” confused or concerned, i wasn't sure.

“first, i want to say that I can't control who i tutor. well, i mean, besides i can choose if i don’t want to work with them, but i really did want to work with them so,” mikasa was having trouble spitting out her words. she took a long sip from the mug she was holding.

“okay, spit it out!” i sat up crossing my legs on the couch, swiping titan from the floor to put in my lap.

“so, it’s eren. which if you’ve noticed i haven’t not been talking about him because you’ve been blabbing about armin,” mikasa finally choked out.

“is your point? that i’m being even worse than you?” i questioned, fake shock crossing my face.

“no, no, it’s just,” mikasa looked down, “he’s kind of an actual person in my life right now and i don’t want him to know i had a little crush on him.”

my mouth hung open.

“a little?” i gasped.

“okay, massive. massive!” mikasa placed her coffee cup down and put her head in her hands.

“it’s so weird, i used to dream about what he was doing but now he tells me how his week is going and thanks me for helping him out.”

“mikasa this is huge, you might even have a shot,” i playfully pushed her arm.

“but that’s the thing, i kind of just like having him around? like being friends with him is just fine. plus he kind of asks me about girls so i don’t think he’s interested.”

mikasa’s face remained the same but i could tell that she had been hurt over this. i felt bad that i had no clue that this situation had been going on.

“i’m so sorry, i had no idea.”

“it’s fine. really. i’m not looking to settle down anyways and how could i ever give him up? Have you seen his hair?” mikasa stared off into space imagining eren for a second but brought herself back to reality quicker than usual. she must have been practicing.

“okay, class today we are going to be breaking off into our partners so you can both plan more on your project. i expect each of you to begin meeting outside of class as well to be prepared.”

i sighed. today was the day. no more brief conversations. i had to talk to him today. i successfully ignored him at the beginning of class but i just had to be brave.

I shifted my weight towards him. he looked calm, like he might not bite my head off immediately. i could do this. i took a deep breath, going to speak but armin cut me off.

“we already have a bit of a headstart because i completed the rest of the research,” armin reached in his bag and pulled out a folder with a sticky note again in his perfect handwriting, “peace offering”.

“figured it was my way of saying i’m sorry, plus you already did a decent amount.” he looked softer than normal, almost shy. i caught myself staring. there was something different.

i reached for the folder in his hand and our fingertips brushed, and i quickly pulled back.

“oh, thanks,” i sputtered out.

“i work at the coffee shop beside campus most nights so we can always meet there before or after my shifts.” armin reached in his binder and handed me a piece of paper.

“this is a copy of my schedule for the next two weeks, classes and time for my other schoolwork are included. you can just shoot me a text whenever you’re free.”

my head spun, he had just loaded on so much information. his schedule was color coordinated. it even included his meal times. i considered myself an organized person but who has the next two weeks of their life scheduled out completely?

i contemplated everything he said. we were ready to start planning our experiments. most people had just begun their research. maybe we would work well as a team. we could meet up a do our first test run in just a few days. this was all going to work out. except one thing.

“wait, i don’t have your phone number?” i looked up from my mental planning to find him confused.

“did you get a new number because i haven’t?” armin questioned.

“um, no” i said. he was starting to confuse me. was this a long joke, I didn't know the punchline too? my nerves stood on end and i wanted to sink down in my seat. he had made me put my guard down.

“oh, of course,” armin cleared his throat, “let me give it to you.”

armin tried to change his expression quickly, but i thought i almost saw disappointment cross his face.

that was it? if armin wasn’t going to infuriate me, he was going to confuse me. i shook my head in annoyance. as armin handed me a piece of paper with his name, address and phone number.

“this is a good way of getting killed,” i remarked.

“got any killer plans this weekend?” armin raised a brow at me.

“i don’t know? i’m thinking i might be walking from the coffee shop to barkley dorms at seven o’clock on friday with a knife,” i said looking down at the schedule he gave me.

“oh, cool cool. by the way i think i gave you the wrong schedule, that is actually the schedule of my twin brother who is much weaker and very easy to frighten, so if he were to say run and scream that wouldn’t be me.”

i felt the corner of my mouth go to lift and i stopped it. he didn’t deserve a smile from me, not yet.

hmm well i don't like them romantically. when it comes to the yuukei quartet ships I'd put them at the bottom 💔 mostly cuz i just dont ship haruka with anyone other than takane (but for some reason i pass takane around like a blunt) and also it means a lot to me that the reason haruka recognizes he loves takane is bc he defines shintaro as a friend but feels sad putting takane in the same category bc of the different feelings she entails.

and I HAVE THIS PET PEEVE that is a bit silly and nuanced. and it implies a lil bit of jin bashing so TOTAL AND COMPLETE DISCLAIMER i love jin's work and his characters and i immensely respect everything he's done for this franchise he shares with us and clearly loves. that said fuck his misogynistic fucking writing

i could rly go on abt how much it annoys me haruka and shintaro's friendship is super developed opposed to ayano and takane's pathetic dynamic that doesnt pass the already stupid bechdel test (i actually ranted a lil bit abt it on my side twitter a few days ago if you wanna read it LMAO) (it starts as a thread abt harutaka but then i get sidetracked cuz...yeah) BUT THIS IS ABT HARUKA AND SHINTARO SO. yeah u could excuse it with shintaro being the protag and ofc getting a lot more focus on his relationships but still. i kinda resent this aspect of their dynamic so i don't like the ship teehee i just... i think haruka is way too good for him sorry shintaro my man. i say this while shipping shinaya i know but to be fair i make them go through hell in my mind before they can properly be happy together if at all. bc when i start going off abt all this stuff i also start resenting shinaya LMAOOO sometimes i say i like it out of nostalgia but then their whole story together and how theyre literally always destined to find each other (holds head) ok. thats aside the point. i have a complicated relationship to shinaya. it's all abt drawing the line between author and creation and how much u can say augh author is being annoying and augh character is just an ass on purpose. and compared to the pov of all the other kagepro characters, u can indeed see that sexism shit in all of it (i could whip out examples in a second)but on shintaro it is noticeably worse LOL

and again im not blaming fictional characters for author's misogyny, like someone is writing this duuuh which is why haruka never points it out but FROM MY insane perspective i interpret it as haruka recognizing the pattern but he's so damn spineless he can't bring himself to stand up for ayano and takane. he probably makes some comments that shintaro just dimisses and haruka is too nervous to bring them up again *me going off abt the internalized misogyny of fictional characters headcanoned based on the author being misogynistic*

ERM. ANOTHER REMINDER I LOVE KAGEPRO AND I RESPECT JIN FOREVER BC HE IS THE CREATOR OF ALL MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS. but also lol. doesn't mean i cant point out some of this stuff yknooooow

My review

I adore this movie. I haven’t watched it in awhile and there were parts I either completely forgot about or didn’t get upon initial viewing. All the actresses brought their A game. I especially loved seeing Margot Martindale. She makes everything better. It’s one of those movies that barely passes the Bechdel test, but is still a strong female centric movie.

The cop has seen a few magic related things, but seeing a ghost rise out of a woman is hard to brush off as something else.

He’s having a hard time adjusting, but he didn’t hesitate with the badge and I give him props for that.

“I wished for you too.” I actually awwed.

I love her using the phone tree.

I love the look of awe in the daughters’ eyes when she lit the candle with magic.

Margo looking around trying to figure out the words - priceless.

Gilly hitting that invisible wall was a good effect.

The power of women. 

So she’s not afraid that he’s only there because of magic anymore?

I want her dress.

When the town thought they were witches, they were scared of them. Now that they know they are witches, everyone’s cool?

I love that the littlest one jumped up into the cops arms. At least you won’t have to worry about the kids not liking the new guy.

7 question ask: Belle

Three facts about them from my personal headcanons.

She inherited her love for stories of magic, adventure and romance from her mother, as well as her ladylike bearing and manners. I imagine that the 1991 Belle's mother died when she was between seven and ten years old. If she had never known her and Maurice had raised her alone, as in the 2017 remake, I think she would be more of a tomboy, as the 2017 Belle duly is.

Her curiosity and impulsiveness got her into all kinds of trouble when she was a little girl – since they still sometimes get her into trouble in her adulthood – which only reinforced the villagers' idea of her "oddness."

She can't cook. Maurice did all the cooking when she was growing up – he approached it as a science, just like inventing, and even though he favored eccentric ingredients, he did well. As a result, Belle would be comically hopeless in the kitchen.

A reason they suck:

She makes the mistake of revealing the Beast's existence to Gaston and the other villagers.

A reason they are great:

Her personality is such a wonderful blend of sweetness, strong will, emotion, intellect, dignity, and warmth.

A reason I relate to them:

I also spend more time reading than I do socializing.

(what I consider to be) the top tier otp/ot3 for that character:

She belongs with the Beast/Prince Adam, no question.

Five things that never happened to the character that I believe should have happened:

I don't necessarily think these things should have happened, because they might have needlessly complicated the movie. But on a purely emotional level, they appeal to me.

She should have conversed with another villager besides the bookseller near the beginning of the movie – preferably with a woman for enhanced Bechdel Test-passing. She could have seen that villager doing some heavy work and helped her (showing that she isn't a lazy snob who shuns her hardworking neighbors), and then they could have talked about Belle's dreams of adventure, with her neighbor sympathizing but reminding her "We're poor people, we can't afford to dream." Belle would agree, saying that between laundry, errands, gardening, tending the animals, and taking the chickens' eggs to market, she only has an hour or two each day to read. (Again, this would make it clear that she doesn't just read all day while her neighbors work.) Then she could say something like "But maybe if we hope and wish hard enough for a better, then maybe someday..." And her resigned, practical neighbor would shut her down with some remark like "You're a kind girl, but you are odd" and walk away.

She should have conversed further with the Beast about his temper, and offered him a kind suggestion for how to control it by describing what she does to calm herself down. Visualizing something pretty and peaceful, for example, or privately venting to an imaginary friend, or going for a walk outdoors (much like she talks to the chickens and goats and then runs out onto the hill when she's angry about Gaston's proposal). I would have liked to see that, because real-world anger management requires more than being shamed.

She should have had a chance to talk about her mother. Not in the way of the 2017 remake, per se, but in some way. Maybe in the above conversation with the Beast, when she tells him her method of calming herself, she could explain that her mother taught it to her when she was a little girl.

She should have had a conversation with Mrs. Potts in her dressing room before the dance scene, paralleling the Beast's with Lumiere. Or better still, a conversation with Mrs. Potts and Fifi/Babette, giving the latter more characterization than just "flirty French maid." More female/female interaction, please!

In the final scene, she and the Prince should have been shown taking a break from ballroom dancing, and stopping to look at a mural on a wall that depicts a map of the world. (Similar to Linda Woolverton's original idea of showing her sticking pins into a map near the beginning.) The Prince could ask her where she wants to travel to now that they can leave the castle, and she would exuberantly point to all the places from her favorite books (Verona for Romeo and Juliet, England for King Arthur, etc.) while the Prince laughs at the sheer number. Then one of the servants would point out that the music is starting again and they would go back to the dance. This would let the audience know that Belle hasn't given up her dreams of adventure.

Five people that character never fell in love with and why.

Gaston. No explanation needed.

Lefou. Ditto.

Lumiere. He's a good friend, but he's slightly too old for her and a little too flamboyant and vain.

Cogsworth. He's also a good friend, but a little too old for her, and too stuffy.

Chip. He's nowhere near old enough.

Homestuck definitely has some dated elements in terms of its edgy humor but one thing it's shockingly Progressive on is its gender representation, even up to act five where I'm at

If you go back and watch a lot of similar comedy/gamer/nerdy art pre 2014 you'll find alot of it operates under the assumptions that:

"Female characters aren't funny"

"Women don't like video games or nerd stuff"

"Female characters should mostly be love interests or relatives"

"And if there is a nerd girl, it should be like a hot nerd girl that all the guys want"

But by the point where I'm at in the comic, half the cast is female, it avoids the Smurfette principle and passes the bechdel test with flying colors, and all the female characters have their own Niche nerd interests.

You'd be hard hard pressed to find other comedic action adventure franchises (not exclusively marketed to girls) from that time to that have really long scenes where women talk to each other about things other than the male protagonists

For comparison, Adult Swim shows have a lot of intersecting humor and Aesthetics with Homestuck, I'm sure there's a good amount of people that are into both homestuck and adult swim, but in the first 10 years of it's existence I can only think of three [AS] original shows that have more than one female character in the main cast, and they are almost always the straight men to their wacky male counterparts

It's also funny in comparison to mainstream gaming discourse during that stretch of time. during gamergate one of the more popular talking points is that "feminism in video games is pointless because girls don't even play video games". Like a lot of men just insisted that women don't like video games, and meanwhile here's Homestuck, a massive gamer webcomic with a very large female audience running concurrently to these guys saying this shit

I don't know, maybe this all is kind of stupid to say. but I'm just very very happy cuz I'm used to female characters in older nerdy comedy/adventure franchises not being allowed to really participate and getting very bored or frustrated because of that

It's also just a worth remarking upon because a lot of hussie's art is so edgy and contrarian, and it's interesting that they were years ahead of their contemporaries on this one aspect

I'm currently participating in a month-long intensive writing workshop from Selah Saterstrom/Four Queens Divination. Which is fantastic, by the way—if she ever offers the Write Now! workshop again, I highly recommend it. The project I'm working on is somewhat autobiographical, and the autobiographical parts all come from approximately spring 2003-spring 2005. It's kinda funny, though, to be writing about a time in my life when I was a self-destructive trainwreck, while I'm here now in a time when I wake up, do school stuff with the kiddos, make myself a small breakfast of yogurt + granola + banana, and then do my stretches, before I sit down to write. (To quote myself: My life is easier now, but it's also less shiny. Or to quote W/IFS: Sometimes I miss those days—that's right, you heard me. Other times I could not give a damn.)

As research for my writing project, I've been rereading journal entries from that time period. Some thoughts/observations I've had while reading through them include:

1 - Wowwwww, none of these pass the Bechdel Test. Haha, I know a personal journal entry can't be measured with the same criteria as a film or whatever, but still. For a couple years there, I was very much "The Ugly One" from Teen Girl Squad. You know:

2 - I was actually surprisingly astute about my issues and patterns, even at the time. Astute enough to know how to stop them? No. But give me a break, I was in my early 20s.

3 - One thing that's the same as it ever was is that I am always lamenting about not writing enough. Like: I need to write more. Or: I've been writing a lot, but not as much as I want to. I think I'm just one of those people who, no matter how much time I spend writing, will always feel like it's not enough.

4 - I was reminded of an incident I'd—well, not forgotten about, but forgotten about an aspect of. So, for a couple months in the summer of 2004 I was traveling/couch-surfing. A., one of my roommates at the apartment I'd been living in prior to that, told me I could keep some of my stuff stored there until I found a solid place to live. When I did, I went back to get my stuff, and she informed me that while I'd been away, she'd had a party, and some of my stuff got stolen. Including my bike, and a bunch of my favorite records. In retrospect, I think she stole them, or gave them away, because she was a mean, fucked-up, vindictive person. And it just seemed really fishy. My stuff was the only stuff that got stolen; none of A.'s stuff got stolen, none of the stuff belonging to the person who'd moved in to take my place got stolen. Plus, it was only my most favorite records, not the ones I felt so-so about, and how would some random thief know what my most favorite records were or have the time to sort through the bin to find them? Anyway. That's not the part I'd forgotten about. What I'd forgotten is that when I got upset about it—and I wasn't even blaming her, I was just fucking upset—she called me something like a 'privileged crybaby' for being upset over 'little things like a bike and a few records.' Reading about that again just made me go: Uhhhh, what??? Like, I feel like getting upset about your bicycle and favorite records getting stolen is a pretty normal response for anyone to have in that situation? Especially when you're broke and can't afford to replace them?

In other, more recent news:

My oldest kiddo got an electronic drum pad for Christmas, but I asked him if I could mess around with it when he's not using it, and he's fine with that. So I'm teaching myself to play drums! That's like the only type of instrument I have no experience playing, so why the fuck not? I'm not good yet, but it's hella fun. And if I get better, and become a real drummer...well, if I'm an O.G. zinester and a drummer, I really will be the (nonbinary) girl Cometbus, haha.

I also found out that my county has launched a big harm reduction campaign re: drugs possibly being laced with fentanyl. They are giving out test strips, and Narcan, as well as doing one-off training courses in how to administer the Narcan. So I've signed up. Just because I don't do those type of drugs anymore doesn't mean I'm never around people who do, and I want to make sure I can help people if necessary. (I'm also really, really proud of my county for doing something like this. Harm reduction for the win.)

And, one last thing: I just discovered yesterday that if you type the word 'emo' on an Apple device, it suggests the black heart emoji. Amazing. 🖤

Logline - With Mai, Hideyoshi, and Aki missing, Mitsuhide and Katsuko reluctantly team up. Disguised as a merchant and his concubine, can they outsmart the man known as the God of Deceit?

Chapter Excerpt:

I realized that Mitsunari was still talking. Oops. I'd phased right out. "I'm sorry, I missed that." Impolite Katsu!

“Oh. Do you do that too? Sometimes it is hard to keep what is in my head quiet enough to see what is going on around me.” Mitsunari seemed unbothered by my inattention. "Not to worry Lady Kaya. I am certain you have much on your mind too. I asked you if you were coming back to Azuchi with Mitsuhide.”

"Um, I don't know." I didn’t know when Mitsuhide planned to go on to Azuchi. We'd had an agreement. If we didn’t find Aki with Mai and Hideyoshi, he'd promised to keep helping my search. But, would he consider that agreement still valid? The 'tree incident' (for want of a better description) might have invoked a disobedience clause. "I should discuss that with him."

"Hideyoshi asked Mitsuhide if they should prepare one of the guest quarters in the castle for you, but I didn’t hear what the answer was." Mitsunari paused, as if trying to form another question in his head, and then dropped the conversation entirely when a gust of wind grabbed one of his papers and blew it toward the sails.

"I'll get that!" I already knew that we did not want Mitsunari climbing around in the rigging. Over the past couple of days, he'd tripped over a bucket, sending dirty water across the entire deck, nearly garroted himself on a sail line, and had knocked Ieyasu overboard (luckily we'd been anchored at the time).
