✎chef note; okay, first off, I'm not a professional drawer but I can still rate drawings. This idea just came to me like a minute ago and I had to do it now, so enjoy :)
fukurodani.
Bokuto
Aight, I see that we started off greatly.
In all honesty, he have no idea how to draw,
And of course his drawing would look,,,, quite terrible i'm so sorry bokuto lovers
He's that kid in art class where's when the teacher already told them what to draw,
Bokuto sat there on his chair, staring at the canvas
Like, what is he suppose to do? Draw?
Well, yeah technically but what???
I can totally see him frustratingly erase the sketch if it can be called as a sketch
And then proceed to try to copy other people's work
Keyword; try
It's bad but at least he had an effort to finish it
4/10, there I said it
Akaashi
His drawings are not that professional but it's pretty
Have you ever seen a drawing that you wanted to stare at it for hours until you're satisfied?
That what's his drawing are like
Not typically an art kid so he's fine when student's from his art class asked him to draw for them
And is feeling pretty neutral with his talent (he actually won't call it a talent but more like a hobby or sum)
And just say 'thanks' if peoples compliments his drawing
Let say his drawing is, a good 8/10
A decent drawer in conclusion :)
Konoha
Not a bad drawer but he rather keep it basic
Konoha's prolly too lazy to draw something over the top so he's just gonna draw flower or something ksndnzkj
Sometimes sleep during art class and had to ask what they had to draw
Proceeds to decently draws a scenery
He's totally not the creative kid so whenever the teach tell them to draw something, he'll always go with basket of fruits, like,
Man, I appreciated the drawing but at least put some effort on thinking what to draw
The art teacher also kept telling him that he have raw talent and should enhance the skill more,
But that never happened, no
"Sorry ma'am, I'll just stick to volleyball, thank you,"
One part of the art room has a section of konoha's basket of fruits drawings but in different mediums
Rating is 7/10
Washio
IS actually an art kid and you cannot convince me otherwise
Has a small sketchbook with him and he'll always doodle when he's bored or in a middle of a lecture (while taking notes of course)
His main skill in drawing tho is painting
The colors blends in so well with one another and he's good at picking color palettes
Also, he doesn't really get that annoyed if some kids from his class ask him to teach them how to draw
Or even look through his sketchbook
He'll just nod and hand it to them without a second thought
Ajsjdhsijsi Washio get so blushy when someone compliments his drawing,,,,
I’ll give a 10/10 :), congrats
Sarukui
The best that he can do is doodles of owls and other shits but other than that, he cannot do
But the doodles are kinda cute doe ngl
He’ll have his moment where he’s in class and have no idea what to do, and just doodles a bunch of stuff
Once he draw his whole teammate including his coach and himself, he thought to himself,
“Huh, this looks good,”
And then take a picture of it for memories (cause he might throw the book he’s doodling in away)
Speaking of that, he doesn’t have an official book for drawing and just draws in his english or math’s textbook or sum
His juniors eyes are blessed when they got his textbook
Sarukui just vibes in during art class, draws and that’s pretty much it
The drawings,,,,,eh,,,, not that good, he only specialize in doodling as I said
so in conclusion,
drawing? 2/10
doodling? I’ll give a solid 5/10, good job
Komi
I’m gonna say this and I’m prolly gonna say it again
He hates art class
Like, even with him trying his best to draw, it’ll always gonna look strange than what he planned
mf cannot draw a straight line in art class
This dood can draw a nice straight line in any other class whether it’s for a graph or others,
And then proceed to shakily draw a straight line during art session
Totally not an art kid and will never be one

I’m so sorry but it looks so bad
It’ll prolly look a lot better if he put more effort, but it’ll still look bad no matter what
Komi hates art class and can’t draw even a decent doodle so unfortunately, I’ll have to rate it 0/10, sorry :(
Anahori
His drawings are eh
It’s not good but also not bad?
Sometimes you’ll just stare at his drawing for a good minute and be like, what did he just draw just now?
What I’m saying is that his drawing’s are unexplainable
Maybe if you stare at it a little bit longer then it’ll make sense and you can see the beauty in it
But honestly I can’t really see anything, not in a bad way, but like, literally nothing
You’ll be staring at his canvas as the mario kart rainbow road music started playing inside your head
But Anahori is always proud of his drawings no manner what
So, I’ll rate confusion/10
Onaga
Just like Komi, he sorta hates art class too
But lemme tell ya, his sketches are GODLY, like, have you seen those pinterest hand sketches?
That’s what his sketch would look like
It’s so yummy to look at what
But he sucks at lineart so JAHGSDSHD
Onaga cannot properly hold the black pen and do the lineart, it’ll always turn wonky and he had to throw it away
Like, if he spend even hours tryna outline it all, and then erase it
It’ll look so trash
And he’ll just stare at it for a couple of minutes before crumpling the paper
He’ll also suck at coloring
Mans cannot understand how the color blend in together
And I think I’ll rate,,,,,6/10 just cause he suck at coloring and lineart lmao don’t worry i suck at coloring too
Kaori
Another decent drawer and her drawings are almost the same as Akaashi’s
But instead of it looking pretty, it looks cute
I have a headcanon that Kaori have a journal and does journaling so that’s prolly the reason why her drawings are cute af
But honestly, her drawings sometimes depends on her mood,
If she’s mad or frustrated, her drawing would look kinda rough and not that cute anymore
If she’s feeling happy tho, It’ll look so nice and cuddly does that even make any sense
Isn’t necessarily an art kid but would love to try be one
And she totally have drawing sessions with Washio aaaaaa,
Just imagine both of them sketching in the same sketchbook while talking about the volleyball club or anything else
She’s getting an 9/10 just cause her sketchs looks clean <33
Yukie
She doesn’t draw at all
Like, you’ll never see her drawing at any kind of time so you have no idea what it looks like
Yukie would still attend art class,
But never draws
She said that she’s pretty lazy to draw it and said to draw it at her home later
But no one even saw that drawing after that
Yukie doesn’t show her drawings nor EVEN draw for once
So I technically can’t rate :/

Ginjima
LISTEN
The only reason why I started with Gin is because he have some amazing drawing skills
He admit that he’s not an art kid but draws godly as if he had been thought since he was a kid,
Well, actually yes
I think Ginjima actually wanted to be a drawer when he was still a little kid way before he started his 3rd year of middle school
So he practiced a few and became a nice drawer since then,
But he kinda quit being a drawer and decided to go with volleyball
And guess what?
His drawing talent is still there
He totally specialize in pencil drawing cause that’s the first thing he started learning
The lines are smooth and the shading are so yummy what is wrong with me
The Miya twins and Suna are so sh00ked when he saw his drawing during art class
ngl he’s pretty smug about it too but doesn’t brag about it
I’ll give this boy 12/10, mwuaah
Suna
I hate this man for this sole reason
Suna is too LAZY to draw so he doesn’t give any effort in his drawing
I can guarantee myself that I’ll get an eye strain when I saw his drawing
And...

No matter on what perspective you look his drawings at, It’ll still look bad
AND HE DOESN’T EVEN NOTICE IT
Osamu laughs a lot at his drawing and they started fighting for that only reason smh

A pretty decent drawer
Akagi always draw happy and cute drawings so you’ll also get happy when you saw his drawings
Puts on a big smile when people compliments his drawing and shyly scratches the back of his neck
“Nah, this just look normal!”
But he draws oddly thick lines sometimes
Sometimes it looks good in some drawing
And sometimes it looks, bizzare in others...
But I think his drawing would look nice <3
Overall, I’ll give a,,, 7.5/10, keep up the good work
Oomimi
He’s from class 7 AND I really think that he’ll be good at drawing
Well, he can draw a few things but he struggles drawing other things he never accustomed to
But!
Oomimi is that kid who’s good at drawing scenery
He knows basic color palettes and which is cold and hot colors
So the scenery drawing would always look good
He get a lot of compliments for the drawing (50% of it from Akagi)
I think he doesn’t have that many time to relax and draw freely but when he does have it, it’ll just be small and simple doodles
um, let’s go with 8/10 <3
Aran
I truly believe that Aran can draw peoples face but in a pretty decent amount
He’s also good with anatomy teach me your ways king
But as much as he’s good at that, he kinda sucks at drawing any kind of background drawings
Mans can’t draw a scenery I’m telling you
As if the background doesn’t even exist in his mind lolol I’m sorry Aran lovers, I didn’t mean that in a bad way
Mainly uses copic markers to color and color pencils to shade
The first time he use the copic marker, he got really frustrated that the marker stain the other pages lmao
And he never uses digital drawing applications or softwares
Aran just doesn’t
I think I’ll rate him, 8.5/10
Kita
Okay, I know that Kita’s a top student and never fails in anything
But he’s not typically a good drawer that much
His drawing still got good marks but when you look at it, it just looks normal
I just know that the Kita lovers gonna get me after this
It’s not that bad and not that good, just a nice balance in between
I personally think Kita’s not that godly in drawing but rather a neutral drawer
He draw what he can and does shading and coloring when it’s needed
The colors are all basic colors, no pastel, no neon
And the shadings are pretty basic
Just a normal drawer here
Ya’ll gonna fight me for this but I’ll give Kita’s point,

Sweet Summer : A Literary Analysis
Society engage a lot of problems especially in this generation because people tend to judge one’s appearance despite of one’s capability and inner goodness. The definition of Beauty as time goes by is vague and doesn’t have any definite picture to follow. Nowadays, physical appearance is the new way of having friends – in school, work, and even in sudden events. Having a “beauty” means people will respect you and even treat you like a princess. It is quite a dissent because people invariably look upon the figure of a person which is a deficient reason to settle a preference. However, as a society expands, another matter arises – problem after a problem such as the bullying, sexual harassment, and ‘sexism vs. feminism’ issues wherein these broad problems came from the people itself.
In the story entitled, “Sweet Summer" written by Cyan Jugo, it depicts the story of The Candy Club – consists of 12 year old teens who loves to eat sweets every afternoon. A simple story that talks about society today, figuratively.
In the story, it gives emphasis mainly to the characters, the forces, and the Point of View of the speaker. First, the character of each persona in the story, they represents a bunch of roles in society today. Camilla and Faye are kind of people who started to mock everything around them or anything that doesn't beautiful in their eyes and they represents those people who doesn't care in the welfare of others, they have the audacity to see people like a laughingstock thing. Sarah, a figure who has the traits of good and nice seems to have a low self-esteem to herself. However, despite of being aloof to people, she managed to have a conversation to Frederick. She managed to interact with someone she hardly knew and that makes her character notable. The boys including Frederick and his older brother Felix, are portraying the role of majority especially of men – bold and brave.
In terms of conflict of the story, the forces is mainly all about the Man vs. the Society. Literally speaking, reading the story itself is much different when the reader analyzes every details of it. The word ‘society' never found in the story but because of its context, it was concluded to be connected to the recent events of society. The phrase, “Don't walk alone at night," Frederick warned. "People can jump at you like Dolby did." figuratively means, it is dangerous to stay late when it’s already night time. Frederick said those words to Sarah is implying the harm and danger of one's life especially a woman (girl). Basically, it pertains to how a society - supposedly a happy and secure place, could be a reason of one's death. In addition, another reason is apparent in the story – the lack of knowledge or understanding about the sexual aspect of a person. In the first paragraph, the words that were used indicates how the boys acted towards those beautiful girls. Moreover, society tend to set standards of what's good and bad, what's beautiful, and what's beneficiary to majority of people. In the story, it's a clear picture of what's the norms – having a beautiful face and curves and boys having fun staring and ogling like bees to the girls.
Author uses the 3rd Person as Point of View in the story makes sense because the readers hardly analyze the hints and what the authors trying to imply to its readers. Also, having a speaker that is not part of the character in the story is an advantage because readers can't read the entire thoughts of the characters. In the last sentence of the story, “Off they went the way Frederick and Sara had come, but forgetting Sara. Only the dog looked back, licking his nose.”, readers can't or couldn’t conclude what's on the mind of Frederick, but one thing is obvious, his pet dog looked back, and the author give emphasis to the words ‘licking his nose' which as a reader could indicate something – desire. Dogs have this behavior of licking something they like, they like the taste and everything about a particular thing. Author made and emphasize a point that the dog looked back means there might more to happen if there's no interruption or intruder.
In terms of symbolisms or recurrent images - in the sentence, “The older boys had begun to hover about like bees, ogling them like treats – but only the two creamy long-legged eclairs, not the nut-brown fudge in a housedress melting in the sun. ”, the meaning behind it was apparent. The phrase, “to hover about like bees, ogling them like treats - ” means boys are giving too much attention to the girls in a way that their actions dominate by a sexual desire. In the phrase, “only the two creamy long-legged eclairs, not the nut-brown fudge in a housedress melting in the sun” evidently means there’s a preference of what’s beautiful. As the author emphasize to the options, it simply means what’s appetizing in one’s eyes is good. The words, “eclairs” and “fudge” symbolizes a sweet girl or a woman and they just differ with their skin complexion. The ‘eclairs’ are women who usually have a white skin meanwhile the ‘fudge’ are women who have a brown or tanned skin based on the denotative meaning of the two words. In short, both are girls but only the premier is appreciated and noticed by the boys.
Second symbolism or recurrent image in the story is the words spoken by Camilla – one of the members of The Candy Club, “Frederick, walk your two dogs!”. The author used the figures of speech yet it gives a clear explanation that there’s a mocking in the voice of a girl, it could also be an insult and a case of bullying. From the context, it could infer that because of brown skin color of the girl named Sara, probably, there’s an ill-treat of her rights.
Third recurrent image that I read in the story is the statement coming from the brother of Frederick named Felix, “You’re a natural! I’m proud of you! Now let me introduce you to some real yummies over there…”, basically means there’s a privilege in the part of a boy doing an intimate scene with the opposite sex and it made a point that it’s natural and good behavior as a male instead of correcting and explaining what’s the proper way of helping a female without having a dirty thoughts. This kind of mentality must begin at home especially from the family members so that it could reflect to the community and as much as possible, to the society.
Lastly, in the last part of the story wherein it narrates the following, “Sara watched both of them – one, then the other – and wished it had been the boy who had jumped at her and not the dog.”, symbolizes the misleading idea of youths between the lust and love. Moreover, this is a clear picture of how a 12-year-old girl or the teens of today, influences by the notion of the societies norms. This is not just to mere narrates the story but also it carries a message of how a teen reacts to an abrupt emotions in a situation and mistook it to something deep and serious which is not suitable for that age.
In the story, it is a clear representation of the ‘sexism vs. feminism’ issue. The boys including Frederick and his older brother symbolize the strength of men especially on being a dominant in terms of sexual desire. Society of today seems unaware of what’s happening in the issue of the two contradictory beliefs. In the story, Sexism pays attention to the character of the boys at the village’s water tank; it depicts their power over girls especially in the phrase, ‘He picked the honey-lemon. Good, since she wanted the Cloud 9.’, a clear representation of women afraid of voicing out her thoughts. Politicians matches this kind of representation. They are elected because they will serves as the voice of their subject in the Senate however, those motives aren’t somehow present in regards for the recent matters. One thing that is present today that is not included in the story is the rights of everyone – there are now laws regarding to human rights and women rights, and it is a good thing because it indicates how a society works and blends well to people. Discrimination especially the bullying is entirely visible in the story – the bullies and the bullied, and the root of it is one's physical appearance, a norms when it comes to beauty. In the phrase, 'Aachoo!" Faye winked at the bright sky.”, is indirect way of disliking someone, in addition, ‘winked at the bright sky’, figuratively means, diverting attention to something because you can't keep watching someone who is not good in the eyes (don't like).
Another issue of society apparent in the story is the lack of understanding on entertaining sexual thoughts and what can it implies to someone in regards with an actions. The phrase, “- and wished it had been the boy who had jumped at her and not the dog.”, is unusual thought to a 12-year old teen. Giving a point that the author wrote these words implies deep and serious problem of a society such as the increasing numbers of teenage pregnancy, teen mothers, and over population of a country because of improper information dissemination in literacy. Teachers, and parents has a big part in educating these teens through direct, personal, and conversational talks – it could be helpful for a teen who will undergo like in the story's circumstances, they'll easily recognize those temporary emotions and what is the normal thing to do.
This story is may not be sweet and complete ending as readers ought to expect, it is a sweet reminder to everyone that listen intently to people and observe the environment can be a huge help in defining and molding the society’s future. Summer is not just a season after the spring, it could be as hot as this what other people called ‘minor issues’ if people keep on avoiding this supposed to be ‘awareness’.

May 1, 2020
Well despite my best efforts to sleep, I was unable to get any sleep. Of course, sleep just doesn’t like to behave itself when it comes to my body and mind. At least I was able to put the time awake to good use, because I ended up getting up and cleaning my room completely. I was able to get my dishes all clean, bed made, and everything picked up..all before 7 a.m. this morning.
After I had finished cleaning up my room, I decided to watch Pocahontas and Pocahontas 2 Journey to a New World, both on Disney +. I also was able to find a picture from the movies to color too while I watched them, which was also so much fun too.
By the time that I had finished watching both the movies and coloring my picture, it was around 11 a.m. so I ended up calling Daddy to wake Him up so that we could watch WWE Hall of Fame 2010 and WrestleMania 2010 today before it got too late. I ended up eating dinner while we watched it too. I had some Honey Barbeque Chicken Tenders and some potato salad, yummy yummy :3 My favorite part of the WrestleMania was watching the Undertaker and Shawn Michaels match (Streak vs Career) even who it was pretty sad too cause Shawn Michaels did lose D:.
My mother had contacted me on Facebook while we was watching WrestleMania to tell me she finally watched the Visual Album from Casting Crowns new album. I had sent it to her back around my birthday, nearly a month ago, but she had been so busy with different things that she hadn’t got around to watching it till today. She really liked it though and said the story for it was really good too.
By the time we finished them it was in the early evening so it was about time for me to take a nap before having to go to work tonight. However, right as I was about to go to bed, Daddy ended up talking to some new girl that had come into His room on IMVU the day before. I’m not sure why, but it made me a bit anxious so I had a little trouble getting to sleep for my nap but I did end up sleeping.
When I got to work, my boss kept telling me to be careful. He’s been so worried about my safety lately, with working 3rd shift while dealing with all this Covid-19 stuff lately. He had told me previously about the last time something like this happened (to a lesser degree) he had some people where he was working, trying to break into his apartment in the building and it scared him so much that now he’s worried about it happening again. We still deadbolt the doors at night to the front of the building, so if people want to come in, they have to call to have me open the doors.
I did try to have a nap at work, but I was unable to get to sleep, so I spent much of the night looking up pictures to color. I definitely went a little overboard and I ended up printing off about a hundred more coloring pages while at work! Opps! hehe. Oh well, at least I’ll have plenty of pictures to color for a while :3
Well tomorrow is Saturday, which is my busiest day of the week, at least for other stuff. I have a lot of guild/faction stuff going on, on my game. We got xtw (which is cross server wars) and then guild trials too that I wanna get done. I hope I’ll be able to stay up for them, but it depends on how tried I am. Guess I will find out later, depending on if I can sleep after work or not.

To The Woman Whose Love is Unconditional
As I sit alone in this foreign room, I couldn’t help but think how things are so different from how they were couple of years ago. While change is good and usually for the best, the change that occurred to me on the third day of April 2018 is something that my mind can never and will never understand.
September 11, 2019 would have been your 54th birthday here on earth and I know exactly how we would have celebrated it. I would take a day off from work, spend the day with you, buy you a bouquet of fresh flowers, eat out with the whole family or maybe we could have gone out of town or out of the country. But you decided on the 3rd day of April 2018 that you wanted to spend your birthday somewhere far more special than any place that I can afford to bring you – Happy Second Birthday in Heaven Ma.
I wish I could tell you how I miss and want you back. How much the little girl inside of me, wants to feel the warmth of your mother’s love again and never let go. I would have given you the world ma, but for now, let me just tell the world how wonderful you are.

2019 Megaman Valentine’s Day Contest Rules Post
It’s year number 12 of lovey dovey-buku contest art, and I’m back at it again. No secret categories, no surprise themes. These are just the two options you all voted on the most, this time around. Let’s do it!
Two categories, in which you are allowed to submit one entry for each category, if you would like. If you place in one category, you will be automatically disqualified from the other, for reasons of fairness, and to give other people a chance to win a prize.
CATEGORY 1: The Way To A Mega Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach (Talent)
Content Requirements:
* A pinup category focusing on Mega Man characters who are cooking, baking, eating, feeding their partner, lounging on or around supersized pieces of food, or creatively wearing clothing that appears to be made out of aesthetically appealing food products. Basically, some sort of delectable food must be drawn along with at least one character.
* As this is the talent category, judging will be based primarily on the overall composition of your piece and your artistic skills. How well can you bring delicious, appetizing food to life, along with your delicious, appetizing character(s)?
Who says robots can’t enjoy food? Certainly not Fully Charged Guts Man. XD
A popular proverb has long held that one can often fall deeper in love due to their partner preparing their favorite food or sharing a romantic meal with one another. There have been many instances of Mega Man characters who would likely operate in a similar fashion, due to their love for their fave dishes. Netto has his insatiable craving for curry, while his papa Yuuichirou’s palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy, as he holds his fork waiting for mama’s spaghetti. Megaman Volnutt wants his sweets so badly, he’d kick a vending machine to pieces to get them, or bug the lady at Jetlag Bakery for those yummy confectioneries. Kelvin Stelar went a more healthy route and loved carrots as much as his wife’s homemade carrot gratin. And don’t forget the delicious cake waiting for Ashe or Grey in the fridge of Hunter’s Camp 4.
So, your task for this category is to draw the Mega Man character(s) of your choice tempting their Valentine with some delicious food. Some sweets for their sweetie, if you will. But the character you draw can be pretty tempting themselves, to go along with their treats. Create a tastefully seductive combo meal that will leave our mouths watering for more!
Now remember, as much as some of you out there might have first thoughts to draw some melons, bananas and glazed honey buns, this category is not meant to get explicit. No frontal nudity is allowed. So please follow tumblr brand censorship guidelines™ when creating your art, or it will be flagged, hidden from the public and not included in the competition. ;p
CATEGORY 2: Princess Sigmia Returns (Humor)
Content Requirements:
* A Megaman character who takes the primary form of another, opposite gender Megaman character due to a magical crown/mystery tank/navigator’s headset/biometal/battle chip/etc. This character is looking for love this Valentine’s Day. How they attempt to obtain a date/partner is up to you.
* As this is the humor category, judging will be based primarily on how funny your piece is. Consideration will also be given to a lesser degree on your creativity in combining your characters into a hybrid, and your overall design for them. But the point of this category is to make us laugh!
Following 2018’s hottest videogame art trend, that of the genderbent transformation of Bowser and crew into Princess Peach-looking alternate forms of themselves, it’s time to continue that spin with more Mega Man characters.
Looking to clean up real nice in the ultimate battle body for a night of love and romance, Princess Sigmia is ready to hit the club/restaurant/park/etc., and this time she’s brought friends.
Your goal for this category is to create the funniest romantic scenario this hybrid character can get into on Valentine’s Day. What made them use this magical, transformative item? What are the reactions of other characters to this newly made up character, who resembles someone they thought they knew? Let your imagination run wild, and draw most hilarious creation you can come up with!
There are no restrictions on what characters you merge, and no, you don’t have to stick with my combination of Sigma and Alia. You can base your transformations off of heroes or villains, minor enemies or main characters. It just has to follow the similar format of gaining the appearance of a familiar character of the opposite gender, while still retaining some characteristics of the original character. So, whether you create Mistress Ashebert, Mega Man VolBonne, Rainbow Cieldevil, Prince Praika, or Crimson Akane, the combinations are all up to you!
PRIZES:
It’s the usual, ‘get-what-you want’ option, for the top 3 artists in each category. As always, if you prefer a cash prize through Paypal, and just need the money, that’s typically the easiest and quickest option to get your reward.
But like normal, I will be flexible and work with the winners to purchase Megaman-related prizes, if there’s something you’ve really had your eye on and would like ordered. Be it a Roll Caskett 4-inch Nel, Fully Charged figures, artbook re-releases, Mastermix issues, or some other trinket. If I can find it within your prize price range and order it to be shipped straight to you, I will do all I can to make it happen!

Jamaica mission trip
Arrival - Connected
After several months of anticipation our group of 5 dads and 5 sons left Columbus, Ohio July 13 bound for a mission trip to Kingston, Jamaica. We would be hosted by an organization called Mustard Seed Communities, based in the Kingston area. MSC provides since 1978 housing, care, food and education for mostly disabled and abandoned children and adults, which today numbers nearly 600. Your thoughts and prayers and generosity have moved me.
This trip was the idea of me, Mark Sellers and my friend John Bruzzese. We know each other through our sons Patrick (mine) and Michael (John’s) who played basketball at Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus. Our sons are now high school seniors and John and I felt that a trip where the boys would serve others, through the love of Christ, would be memorable.
Besides John and me and our two sons, the mission mates include Matt Niemiec and his son Zach; Brian Haney and son Liam; and Matt Ritchey and son Max. All are from Columbus.
As mission leaders John and I are often looked at as the ones responsible for making this trip happen. True, but John and I are merely the products of our connections, some we sought and many we didn’t, but that somehow through the grace of God came into our lives. Collectively those connections are the inspiration and guidance for this trip.
First, my brother Brad. It was his former college roommate Thad McGuire at Ohio State,who went on to get his MBA, then got into a management consulting, and several years later heard a calling to the priesthood. Thad’s now a priest in the Phoenix diocese. Thad recommended Mustard Seed Communities. (The logo on the t-shirts that you see all of the mission team members wearing was designed by my daughter Hannah, a graphics design graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP college).
Another connection of mine is Steve Gran. Steve helped me get the mission bug three years ago when he asked me to join a team in Haiti.
John had taken a mission trip to Monterey, Mexico years ago with his daughter in 2013.
Then of course there are the mission team members. To explain how I am connected to all of them would take too long but suffice to say I am where I am in my faith life not because of conscious choice; but rather, because of many individuals who took me in, like a stray cat needing a home.
Arriving at Mission House Gordon Town, Jamaica
We met our drivers and mission rep, Leroy at Norman Manley airport Saturday evening. Leroy we would learn was the perfect host for mission groups. A jovial, easy going Jamaican, he quickly cut through anxiety and anticipation with jokes and offhand funny comments. He butchered John’s last name ‘Bruzzesse’ for ten minutes (later, on purpose I think!). We made new connections with driver Webb and mission rep Tavares, whom we later heard Leroy call ‘the mayor’ because he seemed to know everyone everywhere we went.
During the orientation the night we arrived Leroy proudly told us about singing the new Jamaican national anthem as a young boy once the country gained independence from Great Britain in 1962.
The cook, Beckita, had a big pot of chicken soup with dumplings on the stove for us when we arrived. Someone commented that the stock tasted like it had been reducing all day, yummy.
Day 1 Sunday
Day 2 highlights:
- Get out of your comfort zone to grow and really live life.
- Provide compassion beyond borders.
- Participate in life instead of anticipate.
- Never underestimate the power of physical touch to a physically and mentally disabled person
- Be present.
Awoke to the sounds of one of the female staff singing God is the answer.
Actually, I awoke all through the night to the sounds of Saturday night. Motorbikes randomly whizzed by, someone at the bar across the street would shout something, or the music there would be kicked up a few levels when someone asked. Everyone had the same experience. Plus, since our mission house has no AC all the windows are open and we all sweated and rolled uncomfortably in 80 degree, high humid conditions.
Outside my room is a mango tree bearing fruit.
Tiara
After a group breakfast and prayer we went downstairs to see the residents. Fair to say that seeing no child or young adult not in a wheelchair and all afflicted with physical and mental disabilities was eye opening for us all. Only one of the 15 or so residents could speak a single word. This happened to be a little girl of 12 named Tiara. She could not only speak but had a sharp wit and irascible personality that caused all of us to laugh very hard.
Picture this young girl in a wheelchair telling my son Patrick to ‘get back here Patrick!’ soon after he left the conversation with her. The first thing she asked me when I met her was ‘Do you have a coloring book?’ I did and she said, ‘go get it.’ Later she asked to play cards. ‘What games do you know?’ I asked. ‘Go fish’ she said. I doubted this but she quickly added ‘Go get the cards.’ I did, and we ended playing a game of flash card to see which numbers or cards and suits she knew. I put the cards we used on the bottom but when she got one right she’d say ‘Give me my 2’, or Give me my queen’. Tiara made us all laugh very hard.
Miss Rookwood and Rose were the night nurses, working a 5pm to 8am shift. They asked us if we wanted to feed the staff and we all jumped in. This again was a bit nerve racking for many of us. In our reflection time at the end of the day several mission mates commented that they were not used to communicating with someone who couldn’t talk and even react normally to them.
Mass
Being Catholic we were all thrilled to know there was the St. Martin de Porres church a 1 minute walk from our mission house. This was special for our mission mate Max whose confirmation saint is this saint. Liam and Zach and several dads were able to wheel several residents to the service. Fr Graham resided, a young Jamaican priest celebrating his 10thanniversary as a priest. Several moments stood out for us including:
- Fr Graham’s homily about the Good Samaritan. We are all called to love thy neighbor especially when it is uncomfortable.
- Compassion beyond borders. This applies to both physical and other borders in our heads.
- At the beginning of mass Fr Graham announced ‘We are blessed to have guests from Columbia, Ohio.
- At the end of the service we were asked to introduce ourselves. They said they were blessed to have our presence and wished us well during our visit.
Matthew 25:40
In addition to this bible verse - which we embraced as a theme for our team – it says ‘what you do for the least of my people you do for me’, Mustard Seed has a facility – called an apostolate – for mostly teenage boys that are HIV positive. All of these young men were born with the virus from mothers that passed it to them.
We toured the facility where they live. Zach and Patrick and Liam and Michael played several spirited games of soccer – football in Jamaica – and at times got schooled and at other times had flashes of brilliance. We treated the boys at the home to ice cream. One guy kept coming back for 2nds, and 3rds, and 4ths until we finally had to say no. We were told to take no photos of these boys.
Dad Brian had a terrific conversation with 4 of the boys at the home. At first they wanted to see his phone, which he resisted but then used it to introduce the boys to his family pictures. Brian developed some great credibility and trust quickly and got the boys to share with him their dreams and interests. He asked them what they needed re: supplies for school. They were so forthcoming he ended up making a long list and is considering this as an eagle scout project for his son Liam. These are some simple items like backpacks, paper, books, calculators, a protractor. I heard one young man say ‘we like to draw here’.

HOWDY-HO, NAKAMAS! Happy Monday! Hope everyone had a good weekend. Before we start off, there’s terrifying news about the 5.2 quake magnitude in Osaka so due to that, all places are closed until further notice so if you’re heading there for visit, please keep yourself updated of travel safety news. W/o further notice, let’s get down to business. We have loads and loads of news to share with you so know the drill. First off, last week’s chapter calmed down a bit. Princess Mansherry was kind enough to heal Shirahoshi’s injuries so all is good. King Neptune thanked Myosgard for saving her life so he’s willing to make peace with this meet. Myosgard assured him that he will support him in any way he can and even allowed Leo and his crew that they’re given permission to beat up anyway celestial dragon with his permission. Well said chum! The paramedics arrived and took Saint Charlos to get his injury treated. His scum dad showed to see him hurt. He got a new slave, and sadly, it was Kuma. He get stabbed and beat up by the scumbag w/o begging for help. There’s an unexpected guest that snuck in Mariejois. It was Bonney in disguised as a royal member. What could she planning to do? Meanwhile in a secret underground tunnel, Sabo and the rest of the revolutionary commanders are lying in wait. Sabo is impatient and wants to rescue Kuma from the scumbag, but Karasu and Betty told him that it’s better to wait until the right time comes. It was revealed that Kuma was once a king of his own country before he gave into the control of the world gov’t. What a shocker! A king? At the end, the five elders were talking about the kingdoms and that Vivi’s family are the only ones that w/drew from being celestial dragons so fears that they could be a threat. They arrived at the empty throne only to see someone is sitting on it. The mysterious figure that had Luffy’s bounty poster. The elders kneel before this figure and called him or her, Im-san. Who is this high royal figure? Is this highest authority person above the elders? Guess we’ll know more next week. No chapter this week so be patient and wait. Next, this past weekend’s episode was SCARY! One after another keeps going after Ceasar and Bege, but Germa are doing their best to keep them away from so they can escape over the wall. Suddenly, Luffy and Sanji appeared and saved Reiju from Big Mom’s attack. As they try to escape, Big Mom provokes Luffy for being a coward of running from the fight so he couldn’t handle her taunting and attacked her in full power with gear 4th, but ran out of steam. At the end, the boys are down and in a tight situation. Next time, Luffy, Sanji, and Germa are down for the county until the castle starts tumbling down from an unknown explosion. What caused it? Guess we’ll see this week. Don’t miss it! Now on with the goods! Look who dropped by for a quick visit! Yup, it’s our fellow tower mascot, Tongari-san! What’s the buzz, my friend? Tongari-san says that lots of awesome stuff is gonna happen next month for the summer pirates festival! First off, they’ll have 3 fun games. Each play is 800 yen. If you succeed to win the games, you’ll be given an official Straw Hat water smartphone pouch that keeps your phone safe. For snack, they’ll be selling a bucket of cotton candy with many flavors such as blue raspberry, yellow lemon, pink peach, green apple, purple grape, white candy, and red strawberry. Loads of yummy flavors. It costs 600 yen. The tower will also be inviting the Straw Hats, Sabo, Law & Bepo, Ann, the clown duo, Buggy and Puggy for a photo greet. At night, they’ll pair Luffy with Sabo or Law as well. You have to be given a ticket if you want get your photo. It’s first come first serve so you have to be at the tower early if you wanna get your ticket before they run out. For July, they’ll have the Straw Hats, Sabo, and Law. Their schedule has been posted on the website. In August, they’ll have Ann, Buggy, and Puggy. Their schedule will be posted later on. Next, shopping goods! They’ll be selling official summer goods such as buttons, acrylic charms/figurines, a candy bag, a ticket holder, and a folder. So much awesome goods! The 3rd floor have also re-stocked more of the character goody bags that comes with a long towel, glow in the dark bracelet, and button set. You have to be inside the tower to purchase them. They have it at the Tongari Island Store. You can’t miss it. Next, prizes! Loads of prizes! The new Ichiban Kuji will be released on OP day which is on July 22nd. Prize A through E are figurines of Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Law, and Ace. Prize are mugs, prize G are picture boards of any characters, the special board prize are Luffy & the boys. Prize H are mini plates. They’ll have it available at Straw Hat Stores, Tokyo Tower, and hobby stores. Next, Gashapon machines will be stocking these figurines of Pudding, Nami, and Hancock in their bikinis. It will be released early August. Next, arcades will stock this new Flag & Diamond Ship of Reiju in her alluring black leather outfit. YOWZA! Get those coins ready to win this diva! Moving on, NEW, MUGI MUGI PLUSHIES! This time, they’ll have Sanji and Pudding in their wedding outfits, and the Germa siblings! They’ll be released in early Aug. I believe. Next, Straw Hat stores will be selling these authentic summer kimonos outfits and wooden sandals that are worn by Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Sanji, & Chopper in the colorspread for boys and girls. Each are sold separately. Next, guess whose b-day is approaching next month? I’ll give you a hint: she’s expensive, gorgeous, and feisty. You got it, it’s none other than cute cat burglar, Nami-swan! Her b-day is on July 3rd. To celebrate her b-day, Straw Hat Stores will be selling her birthday button and bromide frame pic. If you purchase over 1000 yen, you’ll get a free bromide card of her enjoying pampering from the cats. Next, awesome JUMP goods have been released such as this t-shirt of chibi Straw Hats in the front and back, and this colorful shirt of the Straw Hats & other characters in kid versions. Stores are also selling this small pin of Luffy that Bartolomeo was trying to sell to some local from the chapter stories. It’s so small as the size of a one yen coin. Very cute! Next, Straw Hat stores will be selling these fun summer straps of Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Nami playing with their water guns. They’re also selling this fan of the gang in their army outfits. Last week, the stores released this stylish hard notebook of Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Law. Good for writing notes. Next, stores are also selling this neat tote purse of Lucci as an addition of his birthday merch. Tokyo Tower will also have it as well. Moving on, Hong Kong will be having an OP Summer Park as well. Details will be revealed later but it will start next month until last day of Aug. Next, Shimamura Music Store will be selling Brook’s pricey shark guitar. Everything is exactly the same from the anime. You must live w/in the country to have it shipped. You can also purchase it and have it mailed to a friend or relative that lives in Japan. ROCK ON! Next, FC Tokyo Team will be having an OP event from the upcoming special episode of Skypiea. The team will face off against the Yokohama F Marines. They’ll release a special video message from Luffy at the soccer game. They’ll also have a quiz game for kids and student to enjoy. The game will be held at Ajinomoto stadium at Chofu, Tokyo area. You can check out their official page. It’s also in English and has info on access. Also, Chopper will joining the event & will have a meet and greet event. GAME ON! Ticket reservations will start this Friday. Look into their Japanese page for the info. After about 20 years, I finally got a new BBQ grill. I had been threatening the family that I would do it, and I finally went ahead and got myself an “early Father’s Day gift.” The funny thing is, my daughters are not huge fans of meat. They are ok with chicken, somewhat, and fish, and even pork occasionally. So, they were incredibly excited to try out some Impossible Food burgers (and I was quite curious to see how the grilling and taste experience of the Impossible Burgers would be as well). (*Disclosure below.)
Both of my younger daughters have taken an Environmental Science class in high school. And both of them have come out of these classes saying, “we have to eat less meat!” and they would rattle off a bunch of scientific and environmental reasons that were a bit over my head. Impossible has actually created an entertaining and educational website for kids to learn how to educate their backward and old-fashioned parents (like me) about the importance of keeping our planet healthy. Just take a look at The Birds and the Trees and there are several simple chapters that discuss various items designed to help talk to parents about climate change. I trust my kids to keep me on track when it comes to the environment and saving the planet. So, they have, as I said, been pushing us to eat less red meat. I’m a huge hamburger fan…so I was a bit reluctant. But I’m willing to try new things. My response was, “ok, well, give me something that smells, tastes, and acts like a burger, and we will grill that.”
What is Impossible Foods anyway?
How can you have something that looks, cooks, and tastes like a burger but has no red meat in it at all? First, let me say that I normally write about tech and gadgets on my site. So, writing about food…how does that work? Well, there is A LOT of technology involved in the creation of Impossible Foods non-meat, meat. It’s all about Food Technology.
According to Impossible, there is an essential molecule called Heme which is in every living plant and animal. This molecule supposedly “makes meat taste like meat” but is also present in plants, just not a prevalently. It is an iron-containing molecule that exists in your blood and grabs oxygen from your lungs, and distributes it throughout your body.
According to Pat Brown, founder and CEO at Impossible Foods, the craving for meat is actually the body’s craving for Heme and the iron and protein that it represents in the diet. So, all of this is science-based. Impossible’s mission is to be scalable, sustainable, and safe yet produce yummy plant-based meats in the process.
I highly recommend you read more about the science and technology behind the making of Impossible Foods and Impossible Burgers (there are other Impossible products as well, like sausage and pork – all made from plants).
What are Impossible Burgers REALLY Like?
So, what are Impossible Burgers REALLY like? Could you trick someone into thinking they were eating or even cooking a traditional meat-based burger instead of a plant-based burger? I’m going to go out on a limb here as say YES.
I received a sample pack of Impossible Burgers and ground “meat” to test it all out. And, since I’m a burger fan, I went straight to telling the family we would be having burgers for dinner, AND, that it would be the maiden voyage of my new grill.
I will walk you through the unpacking and cooking process. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to smell or taste the end result, so I hope that the pictures will help fill in the blanks.
You can purchase the Impossible Burgers in pre-measured burgers that are ready to cook. (I haven’t tested out the ground meat version yet…perhaps on a taco night or if I make spaghetti.) As I went through the process of cooking the Impossible Burgers, I kept coming across some great differentiators and even a few advantages.
Here’s one: you don’t have to thaw out the Impossible Burger fully. Yes, you can just put it on the grill frozen if you need to. It does help to thaw it out – I did that by just leaving them overnight in the refrigerator. With meat-based burgers, it is usually recommended that you don’t cook frozen meat patties because you have to ensure the meat is cooked well enough to kill out bacteria.
Guess what? Impossible Burgers aren’t meat, so you don’t have to be as religious about cooking to that pre-defined temperature to kill that bacteria. I wouldn’t recommend under-cooking anything though. To cook the Impossible Burgers, it is 2 minutes per side at Medium-High to High heat for thawed patties. For frozen ones, it’s 4 minutes per side.
If you have the ground-up version of the Impossible meat, you can add your own spices, or onions, or hot peppers, or whatever to it. For my initial test, we just did the pre-measured burgers as I said – we would add the other assortments later.
The raw Impossible Burgers actually look and feel like burgers. They are not a single consistency nor color, and they even seem to have “fat” globules within the “meat.” To my unprofessional eye, they looked like meat burgers…they were even a bit “bloody!”
After heating the grill, I just slapped the Impossible Burgers on. They popped and sizzled and smoked just the way you would expect a meat burger to. There were even little flare-ups from the grill.
After a few minutes (I actually waited more than 2 minutes for the first side as this was my first time grilling Impossible Burgers), I flipped them over. My new grill was able to make some great sear marks!
I continued to cook them – things were smokey and smelling great – just like what you would expect. Next came the cheese! And I toasted some artisanal buns as well.
The one thing that I did notice about grilling the Impossible Burgers was that they didn’t shrink as much as traditional meat burgers. I honestly hated when I grilled regular burgers, and they would shrink up and be essentially hidden in the bun. The Impossible Burgers pretty much maintained their size – so when you had your burger, it was truly a burger and not a bun with some meat in it. You can clearly see this in the photo above (and I did actually overcook the Impossible Burgers slightly – but they didn’t shrink).
Next up came all of the garnishes! We kept things pretty traditional with condiments, pickles, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. Next time, I will probably experiment more with different types of toppings like hot peppers or grilled onions or something like that – my mouth is watering just writing this!
So what about the Impossible Burger taste?
I have to say, I really liked the Impossible Burger. It had the consistency of a meat burger (even even though I over-cooked it slightly). You can, actually, have the Impossible Burger be a bit pink in the middle – remember, it’s not meat.
It smelled, tasted, and chewed like a meat burger. So much so that I actually had two of them. And how did my family like them? They loved them! And, my daughters were happy to be eating something that was plant-based and sustainable.
To be completely candid, I had tried another plant-based meat burger. It was pretty good as well. But, one of my daughters and I both got quite gassy a few hours later. Hmmm. Did that happen with the Impossible Burger? Nope! And I wolfed down two of them.
I will leave you with the image above to make your mouth water and get you hungry! I do highly recommend you go to your local supermarket (or you can order directly from Impossible) and pick up a grilling pack of patties.

The colors represent the colors of the classrooms!! I just wanted to show my appreciation with a yummy treat!!

Fourth of July Magic
A lot of things come to mind when I think of The 4th of July. I’m reminded of red, white, and blue streamers, the whistling sounds of fireworks, and let's not forget the savory smell of barbeque on the grill. Now imagine that on a grander scale which includes elevated foods and drinks, a firework's production, multiple parades, and an overwhelming sense of joy. Are you picturing it? If so, great; because Disney World has that and much, much more. Here is a closer look on how Disney celebrates America's Independence Day!

Magic Kingdom
Magic Kingdom is known for its larger than life fireworks. On the evenings of July 3rd and July 4th, guests will see a spectacular sky performance matched with a patriotic musical score. Earlier in the day, you can catch The Muppets Presents: Great Moments in American History in Liberty Square. All your favorite characters will be part of the production, showing off their patriotic duty in a whimsical way. The event is performed several times a day. Another tradition is the Flag Retreat which takes on Main Street U.S.A. During the event, a veteran is selected for the honor and guests can pledge allegiance and hear patriotic songs as the flag is lowered. Delicious food is everywhere including a quick serve spot called “Casey's Corner” which has a yummy footlong all-beef hot dog on the menu.

Hollywood Studios
Star Wars is definitely the biggest pop culture contributor to the Disney franchise, and this accomplishment has not gone unnoticed. Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular show is truly one-of-a-kind and will leave you in awe. The Carolina Footlong is a tasty meal you can enjoy while watching the fireworks show. This quick serve meal can be found at “Dockside Diner”.
Epcot
One of Disney's yearly tradition is the Voices of Liberty acapella group. An amazing group of performers can be seen inside The American Adventure pavilion on July 4th and they have their special performances at the America Garden Theatre. As some traditions continue, others will soon come to a close. The nighttime finale of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth will have its final 4th of July performance as it is scheduled to end September 30, 2019. While visiting Epcot, “Liberty Inn” quick serve has a mouth-watering pull pork sandwich to top off your day.
Animal Kingdom
When it comes to live performances, Animal Kingdom is my favorite park to visit. The Rivers of Light: We Are One captures the essence of mankind and animal. With the beautiful stars, fireworks, and Disney animal-inspired themes including scenes from "The Lion King"; this event will not disappoint. The show is scheduled for two nightly performances. Be sure to visit "Flame Tree Barbeque" because there's a delicious rib meal with your name on it.
There are plenty things to do and plenty to see, so do not forget the amazing photographers known as Disney cast members who are waiting to take your photos. The best part is you can show your Patriotic spirit in many ways with Disney Photo Pass services. Options include: 1776 era themed photos, 4th of July props, and unique angled videos of the park. Of course, this is a limited-time offer that begins July 3rd to July 4th at various locations throughout Magic Kingdom. There's more to cover like the waterparks, Disney Springs, and the Resorts; but I'll leave it to my Disney travellers to join in on the discussion.

Serving Size: 12 , Meal Prep: 5 min, Cook Time: 10 min, Total Time: 15min, Calorie Serving: 150
Ingredients:
1 cup unsalted sweet cream butter
1 1/2 cups powder sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
2 1/2 cups flour
1tsp cream of tarter
1 tsp baking soda
1 mickey mouse head cookie cutter
1 cookie sheet fitted with parchment paper
Vanilla frosting ingredients:
1/2 cup milk
2 cups powder sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
Red and Blue gel food coloring
2 disposable piping bags
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Using a standing mixer, cream together the butter, powder sugar, vanilla and egg together until creamy and combined.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cream of tarter and baking soda
Gradually mix in the flour mixture into the wet ingredients until combined and a dough forms
Once the dough is formed, sprinkle about 3 tablespoons of flour onto a cutting board and place the dough onto the cutting board.
Sprinkle some flour onto the cookie dough and roll out the dough to about 2 inches thick
Cut out your cookies and place onto the cookie sheet
Bake your cookies for about 8-10 minutes
Let them cool completely
Glaze instructions:
Whisk together the milk, powder sugar and vanilla extract until smooth
Spoon about 1/8 Cup of icing into two bowls and add a few red food coloring into one bowl and blue food coloring into the second bowl
Mix until both are combined
Spoon each color into their own piping bags
Cut the tip off the piping bags
Drizzle the colors into the white icing about 2 times going vertical and horizontal
Dip the cookies into the icing and turn the cookies 90 degrees
Place back onto the wire rack and repeat the previous steps for remaining cookies

There is so much beauty and wonder in Northern California. From waterfalls to volcanos and lava tube caves, there is an abundance of epic things to do in Northern California. Below we list out our favorite places to visit.

Yosemite National Park
We had heard Yosemite was amazing and they were right! We spent 5 days in the park and did one of our favorite hikes of all time: The Mist Trail.
The Trail had us hiking up right next to a waterfall. We had brought rain jackets for the kids and it was a good thing we did because they got soaked!! It was such an awesome hike. Definitely wasn’t easy hiking up the mountain, but was well worth it.

San Francisco
An interesting city for sure! But also a really cool place to visit. We spent a couple days exploring the city. One day was spent just walking around by Pier 39, going up the crookedest street in America. Then heading over to Chinatown where we literally felt like we were in China.
There are also great children’s museums and other museums to visit in the city along with the awe-inspiring Muir Woods and Point Reyes Seashore just a short drive outside of the city.

Lake Tahoe
If you are looking for more nature and beauty then you don’t want to miss Lake Tahoe. I know the area is known for its winter skiing, but it is also a spectacular place to visit in the summer.
We loved Sand Harbor Beach for paddle-boarding and spent a whole afternoon into sunset enjoying the gorgeous water and views.

Russian River
If you are a beer person you don’t want to miss Russian River. Plus there is more than just beer here! We stayed at a campground that had a fun rapids/stream/river that the kids played in for hours.
But back to the beer. Russian River is where Pliny the Elder is brewed. And it is my husbands favorite beer of all time! We headed into Santa Rosa to go the Russian River Brewing Company and it was packed!
We waited in line for about 10 minutes then got a table. Having a Pliny The Elder out of the tap was a highlight of our California trip for Craig and we went home with a case and a t-shirt!

RV/Camping: Russian River RV Campground. This was a fun campground with an area to put tubes in the creek and ride it down about a 100 yards and then get out and walk back up to do it all over again!

Russian Gulch State Park
A beautiful state park area that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco and Yosemite and out in the middle of nowhere. When you go down the hill into the State Park you loose all internet connection and you can feel the stress melt away.
There is a creek running through the park, a trail at the back end of the park and a beautiful beach that you can walk to.
If you are looking for nature and relaxation this is the place for you.

RV/Camping: Russian Gulch State Park is the campground we stayed at. We didn’t recommend a hotel since this stop is all about the state park campground!

Fort Bragg – Glass Beach
You know those Instagram pictures of the beaches covered in glass. This is the place!! It doesn’t quite look like what it does in the pictures. Since just recently they made it illegal for people to take the glass home with them. Prior to that you could take glass off the beach which depleted the glass.
But don’t let this stop you from going. There is still lots of beautiful glass on the beach and you can sit for hours and search through the sand looking for all different colored glass.
It is also a pretty beach area and nice to just sit and look out over the ocean.

RV/Camping: Russian Gulch State Park is the campground we stayed at when we visited Fort Bragg and Glass Beach.

Humboldt State Park
We drove on the Avenue of Giants to get here and it was awesome. The Redwood trees are so magical and driving through them makes you feel so small! We pulled into Humboldt State Park and we were able to camp among the Redwoods. To date this is one of our favorite campgrounds.
They have a visitor center area where you can learn more about the Redwoods plus multiple trails you can walk right through the Redwoods. There are also trees that have fallen down and you can walk along them. The kids loved this.
You can also climb in the roots of some of the fallen trees. It is a great way to get a perspective on how big these trees are.
While in the area we also visited the town of Loleta so we could check out the Loleta Cheese Factory! If you like cheese don’t miss this stop.
Where To Stay
RV/Camping: Humboldt Redwoods State Park. You could drive in to explore this area from some of the surrounding towns but if you have a chance to stay here it is amazing!

Redwoods National Park
I hadn’t realized how spread out the Redwoods are. I thought it was like other National Parks where you went to the Visitor Center and then followed a map around the National Park. Not quite. The National Park is spread out over all of coastal Northern California with a few state parks mixed in.
We ended up doing the Fern Canyon hike which was amazing since it is where they filmed part of the 3rd Jurassic Park movie! Our kids loved that. The trail takes you through trees and ferns while you are walking within a creek. So come dressed in the right clothes!
This is all we did officially in the Redwoods National park. But after being at Humboldt State Park and driving the Avenue of the Giants we felt we had gotten the Redwoods experience.
If you want to add in another stop check out: Patricks Point State Park. It was a beautiful beach area – though very dangerous so don’t plan to get in the water! But there is a nice sandy beach area to hang out and take in the views around you!

RV/Camping: Red Wood Coast Cabin and RV is the campground we stayed at when we visited the Redwoods and Arcata. It is located in Eureka.

Arcata
We had a great time exploring the quirky town of Arcata. They had an herbal shop in their downtown area that we really liked and the square in the middle of town was a fun place to hang out.
We also took a drive over to the town of Eureka to check out the Humboldt Cider Company brewery! It was yummy and a great place to bring the kids along to hang out, play games and listen to music while I tried a flight of Cider beer.

RV/Camping: Red Wood Coast Cabin and RV is the campground we stayed at when we visited the Redwoods and Arcata. It is located in Eureka.

McArthur Burney Falls
After the Redwoods we headed inland to what was named: The Most Beautiful Waterfall in California – McArthur Burney Falls. It didn’t disappoint. The waterfall was amazing!! It is definitely a place to stop and take the short hike down to the waterfall.
You can also camp here and the campground was beautiful and the spots were big with plenty of room.

RV/Camping: McArthur-Burney Falls Campground is the campground we stayed at when we visited the falls and also Lassen (it was about an hour drive to get to Lassen from here.

Lassen Volcanic National Park
Our next stop was Lassen Volcanic National Park. We actually camped at McArthur Burney Falls and drove a little over an hour to get to Lassen. It worked out well for us.
Once there, we stopped at the Visitor Center to watch a movie about the National Park and to learn about the 4 different kind of volcanoes that are here. We then headed out to drive through the park.
It was a beautiful drive and you can see all of the volcanoes they talk about in the movie. We went from one end of the park to the other. Then stopped at the second visitor center to sit out on the patio and have some beer and ice cream.
Here are a list of hikes you can do in Lassen:
Brokeoff Mountain – 6.8 mile hike
Kings Creek Falls – 3 mile hike

There is also the hydrothermal areas and caves to explore (We didn’t do the caves since we were going to visit Lava Beds next!).

Lassen is one of the least visited National Parks. What was great about that was it wasn’t very busy. After coming from Yosemite this was so nice!! If you have a chance to visit this beautiful National Park you should do it!

Lava Beds National Monument
We pulled in to camp here and it was another beautiful and peaceful spot. The further north we got into California the more we liked the state! It became so much more beautiful and peaceful.
We stopped at the visitor center to learn all about these caves and what we could do in the national Monument. They pointed us in the direction of the caves. There is a 2 mile loop you can drive that has 20+ caves you can explore!
They recommend flashlights and helmets and even knee pads. If you are doing the more difficult ones I can see why you need all that. But we did it all with only flashlights. We did buy the kids headlamps and I would recommend doing that somewhere other then the visitor center before you come – it would probably cost a lot less.
We did end up with a few bumped heads and scraped knees, but it was totally doable without all the gear. Do note that the Visitor Center will have you walk on a disinfectant type of mat to clean off the bottom of your shoes so you don’t bring any diseases in to the bats.

Here are the caves we did:
The first cave we did was: Sunshine Cave. This was is ranked as a medium difficulty trail. We did this as our first one and it went fine. It was really cool to walk down into the cave, walk around it and come back out to the bright sunshine.
After conquering that one we felt like we could do a hard level cave. That sent us to Hercules Leg and Juniper Cave. These are 2 caves connected in the middle. So you go into one and then walk through it and into the other and out a different end.
It is over a 1/2 mile walk and at some points it is pitch black and at some points we had to crawl!! It was a really cool experience and if you have a group that can crawl under low openings I would highly recommend it!
Once we got out we had to walk about a half mile back to our cars and then we headed out.
You could spend multiple days here if you want to explore all of the caves or just stop for the day and do a couple like we did.

Hotel: There are not many places to stay in the area so you may have to make this a stop on your way to your next location unless you are camping. Then there are options with the National Monument.
RV/Camping: Lava Beds Campground. We really enjoyed staying at the campground in Lava Beds National Monument! Beautiful views and very peaceful and quiet.

I got a crop sweatshirt and athletic leggings, felt bad about myself but hadn’t had dinner, so I went to Wawa. Woof.

Run on the trail after this horrific training class in which I was literally the only student for an all day session. And I had to go back the next day 😩 went to Marshall’s before my run to see if I could find any cold weather gear bc I only had my sweatshirt, gloves, wool earwarmers, and thin leggings. Didn’t find any of that, but got those AMAZING NEON PINK LEGGINGS IN THAT ONE PICTURE and some other ones too. You know me, can’t stay away from that athleisure ish.

Started the sprints in the cotton leggins I was wearing, then after like maybe 9 or 10 strides I was like oh FUCk no they suddenly lost all their elasticity and I was having to pull them up for my life. So after completely embarrassing myself hoisting those mothereffers up for my first sprint, I jumped in the car and changed into spandex pants, then zoomed back to the trail start and actually did my workout. Good thing my house is only 8 minutes away from that part of the trail.
I think I may have mis-read what my Nike app was telling me to do, but I’m pretty sure it said to do 6 x 200m sprints with 4:45 min in between. So that’s essentially what I did, I sprinted for the 200m and ran / jogged in between. Although the app only recorded the distance for the sprints, I wanna say I did a little more than the day before, since I went further on the trail. I hate that you can’t go back and check what it told you to do; you only see how you actually ran according to the app. Lame af. Though I was proud, I increased my sprint speed at almost every length except the 3rd.

No real workout here, since I had to leave work early to take the train back to le Nova for Palooza. I scarfed down a Snap pizza (the classic spot) right before the show, and somehow stayed away from the dangers of late night college food. Though I did get all my steps in my showing one of our friends’ home friend around campus, and apparently that little tour counted for a nice brisk walk. Obvi the Snovas killed it, as a great opener for what my friends and I dubbed AcaWeekend. Saturday they’d be competing at ICCA regional semifinals #pitchperfect for the first time ever, which was so exciting. Palooza the day before was just their warmup, but fortunately we got to see two new songs from them. It kinda sucked for them though bc they went first out of the seven groups and the sound guys always need a few groups to warm up before they actually refine the balance, and they just sounded muddled. Run in the morning before the day’s festivities. This was a quick workout before most of the humans who stayed in my apartment became humans, a brief mile ish to the waterfront and back. I realized I’d been wearing a blueish shirt and black leggings in literally all of my pics lately so I spiced it up with these fun stripey ones. Lol.
We adventured to brunch, where I had a yummy spinach and goat cheese salad with fig dressing, and wandered around the city for the afternoon before we had to head to semis. I splurged on Hunger Burger at RTM because I told myself that this was my indulgence for the weekend, and I wasn’t going to be drinking anymore for the next few months (it’s not like I do it that often anyway, I just want to try it to see how it helps my training/weight loss, if at all), so I got a specialty thin mint shake. Woops. Honestly, it was so worth it though, and I didn’t even end up eating most of the fries anyway, so it wasn’t the worst I could’ve done.
At semis, there were literally so many good groups and we were all like oh shit how are they going to stack up?? But Snovas SLAYED even better than they did last time and ENDED UP IN THIRD PLACE WHICH IS THE CRAZIEST BEST HONOR WE’VE EVER GOTTEN AND IT’S JUST SO COOL!!!!! A cappella is the shit, guys, I swear. I’m so proud of those kiddos, and they get to submit a wildcard video for a chance at Finals in NYC which is like legitimately insane. They’re somewhere in the top 18-27 groups in the country right now, and coming from a school where we legit don’t have music majors and a joke of a music activities staff / support, this coulD NOT be cooler. Long ish run and relaxing. Got up and was worried about the weather forecast for Monday because I was supposed to be doing my long run for next week then, and it was going to be torrentially downpouring all day, so I was hoping to switch my days because the weather was decent enough that I could’ve done it on Sunday. But then I updated my app and A, it changed my schedule for this week anyway, and B, I remember I could’ve moved it anyway if I wanted to. So instead I went and did that 5K Sunday challenge thing that it introduced. And I ran back from there, so it actually was closer to the 5 miles I had wanted to do anyway. So ya.
I felt a little subconscious in these leggings because, though they are a spectacularly bright and amazing color, they also show my cellulite on the back of my legs… but I thought, fuck it, people will see me, and if they give me a look, I’ll just push harder and show them that cellulite means nothing if you’re fast and capable and strong. So. I used it to empower me, I guess.

Then I ran on the treadmill for my benchmark for the first time, which was weird knowing my exact speed at certain times and being able to force myself to a certain pace.
