"Take intermediate French they said. You'll be fine they said," you muttered to no one in particular as you read the Google translation over and over again. "My French teacher is going to kill me."

You rubbed your eyes, peeking out of makeshift pillow your arms made. Standing tall at the front of the class with a booming voice was your French teacher. She held a small, clear glass jar with folded bits of paper inside in one hand while placing a stack of letters on her lectern with her other.

"Speaking with natives is an excellent and necessary way to develop your language skills (unlike this soon to be 30 minute speech) so due to the cancellation of the exchange program for this year and the long dragged on meeting, we have decided to give you all pen pals!" she announced. Her arms held a wide stance, awaiting for something you were unaware of.

Some whispers and small squeals echoed through the lecture hall. Others groaned and put their head on the desk, waiting for celestia, perhaps even an archon to take them. You did neither.

"I wish I could turn back time," you sighed. After contemplating for an hour whether your teacher would ever find out that you used Google translate to write half your letter or not, you started handwriting it on a stack of fancy paper you really shouldn't have been able to afford. "Shell never know. It's not like he can tell her anyways."

As you dragged your pen along the piece of paper, you remembered the speech about how necessary this was, the small piece of paper you pulled out of the bag and the letter that came with it. With a small smile playing on your lips, you signed off and stuck the small paper that read "lyney" just below your name with a paper rainbow rose you made yourself. It had its imperfections but it's similarity to the fresh ones he sent you left you content.

"Oh my god why did he reply so fast?" you asked yourself. Not even 3 days later and you received another letter from lyney. You traced the grooves of the red wax seal made you shiver. He wouldn't ever know you used google translate right? With pursed lips, you opened it. Perfume immediately muddled your senses as you opened up the envelope. Your peers hadn't even sent their first letter, let alone receive their second.

As you skimmed over the letter, you took down some notes like where he's from–which was so uncessary–what he likes to do and some of his contact details. You hummed, giving yourself imaginary pats on the back for reading a whole three sentences before typing the other two paragraphs into Google translate. You really needed to switch classes, desperately.

It was only then you spotted that a sentence in french came out the same in the translation. "You really shouldn't be using Google translate for these letters," written at the very bottom. Well fuck.

"You are friends with your penpal? Well that's lovely (name)," your French teacher clapped with bright sparkles in her eyes. It blinded you for a second and you had to look away before you lost the ability to see forever.

I didn't use Google translate for this one. Are you proud of me? You wrote at the bottom before slipping the letter into its envelope and sealing it with the new wax stamp set you bought recently.

You rushed back home. You winced at the clatter of your laptop in your bag hitting the floor, deciding it was a problem for future you. Ripping open the envelope and skimming through the letter, you read at the very bottom 'I am proud of anything you do, mon Cheri."

A smile broke out onto your lips as you neatly kept it away in a small box your mother got you from Fontaine when you were little. The small box was made of white marble with gold outlining its edges and gathering in a few swirls in the middle where the golden clasp rested.

The Sun shone brightly despite it being the middle of December. Rays of Sunlight squeezed through your closed curtains and you wondered if it was snowing in Fontaine right now. Did Lyney like playing in the snow?

Letters became less and less frequent as your peers lost motivation in writing long drawn out of paragraphs with nothing but small talk. A year and a half had passed yet your teacher held a strong morale despite the head of languages not enforcing this penpals program anymore. Even they must have gotten tired of the back and forth.

A few days until Christmas holidays. Opening your phone, you checked to see if lyney had texted you anything. Nothing...

Your eyes kept glossing over your texts from Friday 11am. Its been a week. Pictures of him and his two siblings who added you back on Instagram. Even Lynette had texted you today, showing some new tea she bought from inazuma last week.

Lynette

My brother has been writing non-stop for the past few days. Are you guys still doing the penpals thing?

You

No, maybe he is writing to someone else?

Your stomach dropped as you reread your message. "Writing to someone else...I need fresh air." You took your phone and wallet and headed out the door.

"Where are you going?" your roomate called out but you were already heading to the lift. You ran your fingers through your hair, pushing it out of your face with a sigh. It shouldn't matter. It shouldn't matter but this is the fifth time you've checked your phone this morning and its been a week with only a read tag.

"I seriously need to ban myself from my phone."

Lynette

Oh...nevermind. I'll ask him then.

Sent Friday 10 : 39am

"The christmas carnival was so much funner this year," your friend said, laughing. Then one hiccup escaped from her mouth. And then another one. Until you and your other friend bursted out laughing. "Not funny!"

"Yeah yeah. I still can't believe (Name) won that plushie from that shooting stall," your other friend said. He tossed another chip in his mouth, after finally calming down from his laughter.

"I'm surprised too. Those games are typically so rigged, I mean did you see the look on the owner's face though?" you said.

Holding up the little classic brown teddy bear, you admired it at all angles. Its red bow had a little bell hanging from the centre, jingling as you walked.

Its silly smile matched yours and then you noticed it. The small teddy's bowtie resembled the one Lyney wore in one of the pictures he sent. And the small envelope the size of your palm that the teddy held was a real one made of paper.

"(Name)? Whats wrong?"

"Nothing! I just realised my parents wanted me back at 10 and well its 11 so I have to go," you said with a bright smile, "Bye!"

"You live in a dorm though?" your friend countered, "(Name)!" But you were already walking out of the festival gates.

Picking out the small envelope, you brushed your thumb over the grooves of the wax seal. The same wax seal that you used for the last letter you sent. Did he really get the same stamp?

A mini rainbow rose fell out. The vibrant colours provided a stark contrast to the humid summer night. One letter. Five words. I love you, Mon cheri.

Your eyes widened and you nearly dropped the letter, fumbling with it for a bit. Taking in the cool nighttime breeze, you looked up only to see the person you hadn't talk to in a week standing only a few metres away from you.

Lyney held a bouquet of vibrant rainbow roses in one hand and the other behind his back.

"How are you..?" You took as step back, your gaze falling to the floor then back up at him again.

"I told you I'm a magician in one of my letters didn't I?" Lyney started, "I would appear anywhere if it was to be with you."

I'm rewatching Ruyi, and all I'm thinking is, "Why is Yanwan such a stupid person?"

She is surviving and thriving because of luck most of the time. How is it that her mother murders his child and Hongli thinks that maybe she is not evil because her mother didn't confess Yanwan's part but he spend over a decade hating on Yuyan because of an accessory and her ambitious son.

I feel the writer faltered and could have made her a more subtle and clever villain. Her only becoming a Consort because Hongli wanted to piss of Zhen Huan, I think sucked the most.

See, here’s where I think the writing is genius in terms of human psychology, because it shows just how utterly narcissistic both Qianlong and Yanwan and how much they see themselves in each other. Yanwan panders to Qianlong’s narcissism, so he literally willfully tells himself that a woman he favours can’t be that bad, to the point that he actually believes it. He wants to always forgive Yanwan whenever she pisses him off, because he can’t admit that he likes or gets turned on or whatever by someone so despicable, because what does that say about himself?

In the situation with Yongjing, he would rather believe astrology nonsense that Ruyi’s vibes killed Yongjing than consider there was foul play. He gets so hyped up with the idea of Yongjing being a good omen that when Yongjing dies he feels like he's losing face to ever have hoped so much. Face is a huge deal to a person like Qianlong, he can't deal with losing face like that so he turns it on Ruyi instead. Later he would rather deceive himself that yes somehow Yanwan’s mother can miraculously pull all off this huge feat of paying off midwives and people both inside and outside the palace to endanger Yongjing and frame Hailan in the process, than admit the obvious that she couldn’t possibly have done all of this without Yanwan’s will or involvement. And some people really are just so narcissistic that they would believe these excuses they tell themselves rather than think that they might be wrong.

Yanwan says it very succinctly in the end, he chose her, he raised her up, if she’s horrible, then what is he? That’s why he can’t ever admit to Yanwan’s worst actions until he can’t be in denial anymore, when it’s all shoved into his face in the end.

Yanwan basically spends her entire time as consort failing up because her benefactor (Qianlong) is too narcissistic to admit he was ever wrong and has the ultimate privilege to get away with that mindset. This happens in real life…

Anyway, I think while Qianlong is aware of Yanwan’s ambition from the beginning from the way she approaches him, and he nurtures that ambition to use her as a weapon against the empress dowager and Ruyi at times, he doesn’t see Yuyan (or do you actually mean Luyun and her hairpin?) in the same way. We see the Yuyan’s scheming private moments but I think for Qianlong, she’s just this plaything gift from a tributary state with a sharp tongue, and she is the equivalent of a sexy lamp to him. So he is blindsided when that toy dares have her own goals and uses her son to push her own gains.

If you mean Luyun, I always thought it was a perfect concoction of coincidences that sets up Qianlong’s suspicion of Luyun, from Langhua suddenly recommending Luyun as the next empress on her death bed even though she hasn’t shown any preference for Luyun before, after Qianlong just learnt that Langhua had supposedly done all these evil things, and then Luyun’s hairpin being found at the wrong place, then suddenly Luyun showing desire to compete to be empress that she didn’t have before and both Yongzhang and Yonghuang who were raised by Luyun acting up at Langhua’s funeral. With his tendency for paranoia of course he would be suspicious of her and he can continue to hold a grudge because Luyun isn’t a mirror to him the way Yanwan is.

things i liked:

love the moment where roku tells aang friends can be a liability and you can see in his face that he's thinking of sozin

koh lore is interesting. funnily enough i've also written koh being the son of the mother of faces in a fic before so i see netflix has been hitting up ao3

(for legal reasons, that was a joke)

i like zhao forcing zuko to turn aang over more than him capturing aang with the yuyan archers himself like in the original. this 100% feels like something animated zhao would do and it really drives home how much of a disadvantage zuko's at. this is the dynamic i wanted to see between the two of them

lmao @ zhao wanting to get every detail of his capture of the avatar in writing, and aang blowing air at him to send him falling over himself. they pulled that right from the original and it's great

BLUE SPIRIT TIME BABY

this fight (well the parts of it that i can see) is SO GOOD. pretty sure it's almost a shot for shot remake of the original and zuko and aang are working together seamlessly

oh i fucking LOVE that zuko and aang are trapped together and get to talk. zuko smiling despite himself... aang trying so earnestly to get through to him... the way zuko actually seems to be listening to him before he hears the word compassion... chef's kiss this was an INSPIRED change

the transitions from younger, happier zuko to older, traumatized zuko are fucking painful. the one where he looks into the mirror to see his unscarred, smiling self for just a moment before it flashes to his present reality... next time just shoot me netflix

things i disliked/am conflicted about:

this is where the show suffers as an adaptation, because if the animation didn't exist, the agni kai would've been fine. zuko trying to dodge, having the chance to hurt ozai yet actively choosing not to out of love, being beaten up, pinned down and brutally burned as he whimpers in fear - all of that works on its own. it conveys zuko's compassion and ozai's brutality just fine, but not to the level that the cartoon does. the scene is brutal in both versions but animated zuko not even trying to fight, sobbing and begging on his knees, and being maimed anyway just hits harder than the netflix version

not sure if i saw it right but it seemed as though there were tears in ozai and azula's eyes??? i can maybe see it for this version of azula but in no world would ozai be crying over burning zuko. it feels like they're trying to make this version of ozai more complex but he was FINE as a classic villain

that being said, i do like ozai holding zuko's hand to his heart as he burns him. the symbolism of zuko trying to reach for his father's love while ozai permanently brands his cruelty on his son... ate

i don't even like roku in the animation all that much but his presence has been weirdly reduced in the show, even though he's the avatar aang is closest to. aang having to take on the burden of redeeming roku's failure is a significant part of their dynamic and i want more of that

hollywood i'm begging you to shoot night scenes that people can see because parts of the blue spirit and aang fight sequence were so dark i looked like the squinting lady meme

i really wish we'd still gotten the moment in the storm where zuko saved the helmsman. i know they kinda replaced it with the crew realizing they were only alive because of zuko's sacrifice, but they could've done both to show how much zuko still cares, even if he can't show it

how are we 3/4th of the way into the season and aang is STILL ONLY BENDING AIR

overall rating: 9/10. definitely the best of the series so far and i love how they expanded on zuko's backstory and his relationship to aang

You were nervous, to say the least. Yes, you've been in many competitions and won them, but that doesn't lessen your fear of losing.

"You ok?" A familiar voice asks you.

"Oh, hi, Heizou. I'm fine, just nervous, you know?" You say, fidgeting your fingers.

"Ah, a feeling I know all too well, heh." He says, sitting down beside you.

"Huh? Really? You seem so confident though." You state the obvious.

"It's a facade. Who wouldn't be nervous competing with a potential valedictorian?" He confesses, grinning innocently.

"Ah- You flatter me, Heizou. Thank you."

"All participants, please move to the stage to your respective podiums. Again, all participants, please move to the stage to your respective podiums. Thank you." You're cut off by P.A going off.

"Well, Heizou. Good luck." You both stand.

"You as well, [Name]."

"Hello and welcome to the annual spelling bee of the academic year 2022 to 2023! I am your game host, Kamisato Ayaka, and will be hosting tonight's game. I'm sure you all know how the spelling bee works, yes? Alright. Let us first meet the competitors, shall we?" Ayaka introduces herself to the audience and your fellow competitors.

Your podium lights up red.

"[Name]." She calls out your name.

"C-o-n-t-r-o-v-e-r-s-y." 

"Correct." The crowd cheers for you as your points go up 100 points.

"Yes!" 

"Ugh…" Scaramouche groans in annoyance. Is this a challenge of agility now?

"Don't groan, Scara. The competition's only starting."

"Yeah, yeah." 

"Next, spell the word uncopyrightable."

*Ding!* 

Scaramouche's podium lights up.

"Kunikuzushi."

"U-n-c-o-p-y-r-i-g-h-t-a-b-l-e." He says with very little hesitation in his voice.

"Correct."

So! Finished Legacy Of Yangchen yesterday, and hoo boy. Here are my thoughts (spoiler warning):

amazing. awesome. 10/10

really though I think this is the best of any of the novels so far. Like I really liked the others but this one was really good

love that there was no forced romance or pointless will-they-won't they, Kavik and Yangchen *aren't at that point* (and you know might never be, we don't know) so while there's potential and a lot of chemistry (and a fake-dating plot), they don't have a big kiss moment or anything resembling a love confession - their closing interaction is a pledge of companionship. Frankly I think aang/katara should've been handled this way. But alas...

absolutely loved all the parts where it would show the present happening, get to a really tense moment, then cut away to show the build-up to that event - helped keep the suspense up while also giving the necessary set-up. Very cool.

Love Chaisee. She's horrible and I love her bc she's also really smart? And there's moments where you almost feel like she genuinely wants to help even though she's doing all this terrible stuff behind the scenes. But it never feels like inconsistent writing

That said. The fact that she supposedly invented Lake-Laogai-esque brainwashing felt a little forced yk. Like cool reference, why'd it have to be here? Now you've created questions like, how does this technique get all the way to Ba Sing Se 800 (give-or-take) years from now?

That's basically my only complaint though, and other people have covered that issue better than I could

I liked getting some more info on how combustion-bending happens, we already knew it was a rigorous training but yikesss

kalyaan also is such a cool villain. like, Avatar has done 'villain is the hero's relative' before but it's always been 'well, they're an abusive monster who'd let their family die as easily as anyone'. The scene where they got Kalyaan to confess by 'torturing' Kavik? Wouldn't have worked with Ozai or any of Korra's or Kyoshi's villains; iirc even the lady from Imbalance wasn't terribly concerned about her kids. Same goes for Chaisee and her genuine concern for her family; I liked the departure from the typical villain formula.

Absolutely cruel to kill off Nujian?? That was uncalled for. I'll be suing for emotional damages. Rude.

Jujinta my little guy <3 (i have a lot of thoughts on Jujinta but mostly I just think he's pretty cool. Would still love to know how the whole Yuyan thing works, since the Legends RPG says they were established in Roku's era a whopping six centuries or so in the future? Was archery just like a family trade until that point when they formed an Organization of it or is it just inconsistent lore?)

didn't expect Akuudan and Tayagum coming back for this book, but I'm glad they were included. Love 'em

- its been a few months into the relationship and idk what led to this but your boyfriend wants cuddles

- You were dropping him off at his room when he suddenly pulled you inside and closed the door

- You stared at him with a confused look and he just have a small smile and sat on his bed

- "Sleep with me."

- You got so red, so confused, so everything

- "No, not like that, unless...?"

- "No."

- You approached the bed and as soon as you were in arms reach, he'd pull you into his lap

- I don't think he's be awkward or anything

- Probably a big spoon

- I think he likes running his fingers through your hair and will enjoy it if you do the same for him

- He'd tell you to relax if he felt you tensing or being stiff

Scenario below ~

"It was really funny when she did that too!" You laughed, recounting the day the both of you just had. Blade let out a smile, seeing you laugh about prior events and jokes the others made. "Ok, we're here!" you announced, stopping right outside his room. "Goodnight!—Ah!"

Pulling you by the wrist, the man successfully pulled you inside, shutting and locking the door behind you. You looked up at him and raised an eyebrow while he just smiled and sat on top of his bed. It looked fancy with the small jewels encrusted in the head of the bed but simple at the same time.

"Sleep with me," Blade asked, although, it came out more as a demand.

You flushed red. Did he just ask you to? Is this too fast? What will happen if I reject him? Will it be awkward? Do I even want this?

"No, not like that," Blade's alluring voice pulled you out of your thoughts, "unless?"

You blushed brighter, the tips of your ears turning pink. You were speechless. He chuckled and patted the space next to him. Slowly, you approached the bed, a little tense. You two were just helping, it'd be fine. Grabbing you wrist, he pulled you into his lap effortlessly, earning him a yelp from you. You froze for a moment. 'It's just sleeping, you'll be fine!' you repeated in you head as you laid down next to him. Blade pulled you closer, running his fingers through your hair.

"Relax, I don't bite," he said.

"Yeah but do you stab?"

You let out a soft breath, melting into his touch. It was quite nice, the peacefulness of the chilly winter night. Your heartbeats in sync with each other's. Your eyelids slowly closing. Blade pressed a soft kiss in your hair, muttering a 'goodnight' and 'I love you.' Breathing steadily and heartbeat calming, you drifted off to sleep in your lover's arms.

"Dear, I still have reports to do," Gepard said, trying to leave but you blocked the exit. You sighed. Does he have to be so stubborn? Grabbing his arm, you dragged him to his bed, plopping yourself down and pulling him down with you. You could hear the soft wind whistle and shivered a bit. It was always warm with how many heaters are around but you couldn't but feel a tinge bit cold, especially when you thought about the everlasting snowstorm outside.

You pushed his head into your chest and he froze. He was scared stiff. He didn't know what to do or what to say. Should he even say anything?

"Um-"

"Relax, we're just sleeping and you need to rest," you said, "there's nothing to worry about."

He wiggled a bit in your grasp and let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. Slowly, he felt his eyelids grow heavy and the sound of your calming voice was starting to sound fuzzy.

MY ATLA LIVE ACTION S1E3 THOUGHTS

EP2 - EP4

This episode might simultaneously be the most and least conflicting to me. I largely enjoyed watching it, and a lot of my complaints are very nitpicky. That being said, if they move too many plot points around to write things out, they run the risk of the adaptation turning into something else entirely. 

If I, as a fan of the original, am able to understand why things are being changed, and where they’re going with those changes, then it is ultimately fine. So far I’m mostly able to understand the changes and where they might lead. This episode gets a little bit interesting in that aspect for me personally. (And it’s fine if people disagree!!)

The way they condensed the plot in episode two made sense, but I think this episode they were trying to weave a lot together, and I guess I can’t say yet if it worked out or not. To keep this section spoiler free, I won’t go into it, but I’ll def talk about this again once I’ve seen the whole show. 

Meanwhile, I’m still utterly perplexed by Zuko’s character. Like. He’s fine I guess. But they’re doing a few things with him here and there that I personally wouldn’t. I’ll reserve judgment until the end, I hope they can ultimately pull it together. 

In other news, as most of us know, because of her having been announced as being cast before the show was out, Azula is in this season. Her introduction and her involvement in book one is all original to this series, and so far I can’t find any fault with it. This actress is super believable as Azula, and because I’m enjoying her portrayal so much I just have to continue to hope that her insertion into book one’s events won’t interfere with the adaptation’s believability as Avatar the Last Airbender overall.

i definitely am not unhappy about the introduction of the idea that not all fire nation citizens are complicit in this war. it adds that extra bit of nuance early, so that’s pretty nice.

absolutely wild that we’re doing azula’s introduction, bumi/omashu, the mechanist, and jet at the same time. like these plotlines are going to run into each other in some kinda way, like. far be it from me to say they can’t condense the arcs like this, but it is an odd choice.

so the theme of this episode is “if not us then who”

zuko and iroh are getting separated?? i feel like this isn’t going to end well for zuko’s character. though maybe because of the white lotus, bumi will let him leave.

hello! I just finished your yuyan zuko series (absolutely amazing) and was wondering why the last thirteen parts weren’t linked on your master post :O

So life has been happening and my writing time and motivation is significantly reduced. The Master Post is up to date as far as AO3 posts are concerned, but copy/pasting onto Tumblr posts is tedious at best and a pain in the butt at worst (sometimes none of my formatting survives the transition and so I have to go through and re-bold and re-italicize all of Zuko's dialogue and anything else that needs it and it is a PAIN), so it doesn't happen a lot.

As for the last bit of the series, it's still in production, and therefore has not been posted anywhere yet. I want to finish it entirely before I start posting again, and as stated above, my time and motivation to write has been reduced by additional responsibilities and opportunities. I'm still working on it, I promise, but this current installment I'm working on is fighting me tooth and nail.
