They're not perfect or anything they're just

Not a canonly seen species

Considering I've seen a contest or two from Arthur de Pins himself (or his publisher I think?) which was specifically about OCs for Zombillenium, I can assure you that large chunk of this fandom lives and breathes on creative OCs. Now, I'm no expert on Mary Sues, but imo if a character has some flaws and not perfect and if canon doesn't go out of it's way to bend for them (instantly liked by everyone, lucky all the time, wins every time), I think that's already not exactly a Mary Sue. As of species, I think it's only more interesting if it's some unseen before creature and it's only good to bring something new among canon fractions of zombies/vampires/werewolves/demons, so I'm sending you some encouraging vibes right now! Don't be afraid! I for one am intrigued now what kind of OC you've made :) This gentleman believes in you and so do I!

What was Amelie like before she met Francis and the others?

Amelie was (technically) an orphan, and very lonely! Her dad gave her up when she was an infant because he didn’t want to be involved raising a witch-child! Her visions/prophecies usually fell on deaf ears as they were very cryptic, and she spent a lot of her time trying to learn magic on her own without schooling.

She’s really old actually, like a couple centuries at least. One of the jobs she had as a teenager before she went to work in Francis’s sideshow was being a housemaid for a wealthy, eccentric occultist living during the early 1800’s. She mixed up their champagne with a prototype elixir of life he was working on and accidentally gave herself immortality!
