WEST VIRGINIA'S MOTHMAN

I was never interested in cryptids, before.

Yeah, as a child I absolutely loved mythology - the Norse one and the Greek one in particular -, and I always had a fascination for creatures belonging to various places' folklore.

But cryptids... they never tickled my interest before.

Things changed one fateful night, when I saw Him.

Mothman.

With his own-like wings, big red eyes, moth antennas and all.

His story isn't the most interesting, I admit that, but in the few seconds I saw him, in the middle of the road, right before he flew away... I was absolutely enamored with the idea of finding all the creatures like him.

And now here I am, ready to return to West Virginia in hope to see him again...

For the first time ever, I finally finished a challenge, and I HAD to dedicate this last post to the one who started my love for cryptids!

So... when a man sees Dakuwaqa, and alerts everyone, I don't match his wide eyes or his panic, but I go to sit on the beach, observing the still waters.

"Am Fear Liath Mor", that's how people call him in Gaelic.

Big, covered in grey hair.

A giant, a monster.

You're a traveler, and you already saw something like that. Those things were the Dark Watchers*, they were in California, and you thought they were terrifying because they didn't move, and yet they followed you with their empty eyes.

But this one...

Oh, this one is walking towards you, each step an earthquake.

He doesn't seem to be watching you, or intentionally following you, but you're gonna die.

You know it.

You feel it.

He's going to step on you, and you'll die, here in Scotland, away from your family and your loved ones.

A creature has been spotted.

You look at the drawing of said creature.

You read the brief article.

And you sigh.

NORTH ITALY'S SALVANELLO

-

I never saw a Salvanello, but I saw the braids they did on my horse's tail, using only three horsehair for braid.

My horse was a very gentle Soul, and I never heard him rebel against those braids.

Here in North Italy, you can't leave your work unfinished, or a Salvanello will destroy it.

My grandfather was on those mischievous creatures' good side, apparently, because they rarely destroy his work, and they also finished it for him an handful of times.

My friend Paolo was abducted by Salvanellos, one night.

He disappeared for a week, because those creatures wanted to have him as their exclusive playmate.

Now... now nobody talks about Salvanellos anymore.

They're long lost folklore.

I miss them like I miss my childhood, and when my old, weak hands gently brush my niece's horse, I can only think about how good some braids would look on this animal.

CROATIA'S SÛMSKE DEKLE

My mother used to leave offers to them, to the forest women.

She always told me that those women needed warmth and food, especially during the war, and that she was more than happy to provide that for the creatures that helped her own mother oh, so much.

The forest women used to help my mother too.

Despite the initial fear their shriek gave me at night, I started to find comfort in them, an in how clean the house was in the morning.

They even baked us fresh bread, one night, those creatures.

But World War I was unforgiving.

When it started, the forest women started to disappear from Croatia.

After a bombardment the meals left for those benevolent creatures started to be left on the window, and the nights were silent.

No one usually saw them, but I did.

It was after yet another bombardment, me and mom were running away from our house, in the middle of the night,looking for a safe shelter, and for a second, illuminated by my mother's lantern, I saw a woman dressed in leaves and flowers, with inhumane features and pointy ears, long, thin limbs.

She was dead.

Croatia never heard of the forest women again.

People used to describe it with a cat head and a serpentine body, but your grandfather was the one who described it in the right way.

The head looking at you from underwater wasn't the one of a cat, no. It was a growling dog.

It reminded you of your neighbors' dog, the one who bit you as a child and had to be put down. Now that you're an adult, you emphasize with the dog, his owners weren't able to train and educate him, and you remember that he was always slapped and kicked around. A bad dog is usually just the product of a even worse owner, it's not the animal's fault.

Right now, you don't feel an ounce of empathy for the monster lurking beneath the lake's surface.

No, you only feel disgust, fear, and you're quick to get away, accelerating with your boat.

You get off of the boat just in time to see a big, crested spine hitting it from the side.

I look at it.

It's- it's a... an octopus? With human eyes and a frowning mouth...?

What the fuck is this?

It's small.

Less that 3 feet tall.

It slowly moves on its four tentacles.

It looks- it looks stupid.

And yet, I don't dare to disturb it, it's piercing eyes scrutinizing me, revealing too much intelligence to be messed with.
