I took this photo after feeling defeated because my most recent shots didn't turn out how I wanted them to. I went out one gloomy afternoon and tried to look for some cool things to shoot. I stumbled on this strange little door, which I think led to a small church. I snapped a picture as soon as I found the spot. Once the picture fully developed I immediately loved it; it turned out great. It had an unsettling, grungy feeling to it. It was exactly what I wanted. Once I got home I looked at all my new pictures for a bit longer, then I put them in my photo album with the rest of my photos. Only recently did I go through all the pictures again and noticed something strange about this particular one. When I was originally admiring it, I completely missed what seems like an obvious detail now. I did finally see it though, and my stomach dropped when I did. My hands began to shake, and I felt panicked. I have no idea what it is, but it’s something unnatural. What or who did I capture on film? And why was it lurking in that spot when I took the picture? I’m afraid to go back and look for answers. I’m afraid to even look at the photo now. I think for now I’ll keep this picture hidden away with the reset of my… “unique” photos...

Recently I bought myself an instant camera. As soon as I received it I began taking pictures of things I thought would make good photos (old buildings, foliage, etc.) and I found that all the photos I took turned out beautifully. I couldn’t stop admiring the colours and the way each photo looked older than it was. I had 4 exposures left in the camera when I decided to test it one night after dark. I expected it to be fine, since the camera had a flash after all, but it seemed like all the pictures I had taken turned out underexposed. I admittedly felt disappointed. Well, that’s until I landed on this photo. Originally this photo was just supposed to be of my partner standing in the middle of an empty lot that was going to be a new condo; there wasn’t much behind him. Some fencing in the distance maybe, and a few piles of bricks/stone, but it was generally pretty barren. At first glance I thought there were just some lights in the background. But that didn’t make sense. There wasn’t anything in the lot that would be so reflective. And the placement of these “lights” were strange to me. After looking at the photo for so long, trying to figure out what was lingering in the background, I began feeling uncomfortable. Anxiety boiled inside me, and I just wanted to get rid of the photo entirely. This is just a scan of the original photo. I ended up cutting the original up and throwing it away. I haven’t been back to that lot since, either. I’m too afraid of what else I might find.

The Future of awriterorsomething
Hey all.
For the past month or so I’ve been re-branding and posting on my Wordpress blog. I originally created that blog so I had a place to post non-horror content, while I continued to share my horror stories and horror movie reviews here.
For a while I was on the fence about creating a space for both my horror and everything else. Mainly because I didn’t want to start over completely, I wanted a way to move/copy everything from here. I ended up making the discovery that you can import Tumblr posts to your Wordpress.
All this being said, I’ve made the decision to start posting everything to Wordpress. This account will still be up, and I’ll probably post on it every now and then. I might even re-brand and turn this into a blog for horror photos and sharing other people’s work. But my main focus, at least right now, will be on my new page.
If you’d like to follow it you can go to https://emthewritinglich.wordpress.com/
Thank you all so much for all your support over the years. I wouldn’t have been inspired to write so often if it wasn’t for this blog. You all mean so much to me and I feel grateful for this space. Love you all! See you soon.

Blog/Life Update:
Hi everyone!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted any original work, and there’s a reason for that. I’ve been taking some classes in hopes of eventually getting a certificate in creative writing. So a lot of my writing and reading time goes towards that. I’ve also been dealing with some health issues and trying to give myself some time to just do... nothing.
That being said, I’ve actually been working on a couple things in my free time.
I started reworking some of my old short stories. Since creating this blog I feel that I’ve learned so much about writing and my own writing style. I mean, I’m still learning. Right now when I go back and read these old stories I find myself not loving them like I used to -- I’m not really proud of them anymore. So I’m going through and editing until I like them again. I might even repost some!
On another note, I’ve taken interest in creating an online writing community, because I don’t have many writer friends. I have the people who follow me, but no real relationships with other writers. So I’ve made a Discord server for just that! I’m aiming for it to be a very chill space for writers of all kinds to share their work, and anything else related to writing. It is 18+ but it will generally be safe for work, with the exception of one NSFW channel. If you want to join, here’s an invite: https://discord.gg/p4AbpwP
I also made a twitter account where I’ll be posting my work and supporting other writers. You can find me here: https://twitter.com/thewritinglich
Anyway, thanks for reading my longwinded update. I hope to be a little more active on here again soon. I appreciate you all!
Keep writing, and stay spooky~

Vivarium (2020) Review
*SPOILER FREE*
Tumblr media
I honestly haven’t seen much talk about this movie, unless I’m specifically looking for some. Vivarium stars Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg — a longtime couple looking to buy a house together and hopefully start a family someday. During one of their searches they stumble into a small real estate storefront. And everything begins there. Gemma (Poots) and Tom (Eisenberg) end up getting stranded in a suburban community full of houses that all look the same, and any direction they take brings them back to where they started. They’re the only ones there, until they’re forced to raise a mysterious child together.
This film takes place in a dreamlike setting that soon turns into a nightmare. The air seems thick, the colours are dull, and no matter which direction you go or how fast you try to get there, nothing changes. It’s as if you’re staring into someone’s dreaming mind — hazy and unpredictable.
Vivarium is a film that seems like there isn’t a lot going on. You keep watching hoping you’ll get to all the answers eventually. It’s a slow movie that still manages to keep you in its grip. You shouldn’t go into it with the assumption that you’ll be satisfied when it’s over. It’s a thriller, it’s science fiction, but it’s most of all a mystery — one that you’re left to try to figure out on your own. Let your imagination give you the satisfaction you need. Dream up your own answers.
Watching this movie will take you on a wild ride. It’s unlike any other movie I’ve seen, that I can recall. It’s eerie, disturbing, and utterly stressful to watch. Don’t let that scare you, though. Underneath the dread, there is a story that I’m sure will resonate differently with everyone. It’s about so much more than what’s on the surface.
Take an hour and a half out of your day and watch this movie. We’re all a little stuck right now, maybe we’ll be able to sympathize with the characters a little deeper — while we’re all sitting at home.

Isolated
Over the course of 6 months, 10 strangers will spend everyday together. The last person to stay in the house will win one million dollars. These people won’t be able to leave the premises, or make contact with anyone outside of the house. If someone wants to leave, they have to press a button that has been installed in the house. Once they do this, a producer will retrieve them and take them back to their real home, completely empty handed. These rules are simple enough, the rest is up to those who choose to live in the house.
3 months into the game, 6 people had already left. They couldn’t deal with the fighting any longer. It’s easy to drive each other crazy in a situation like this one. But people like watching it; the ratings are high enough to keep going.
It’s almost sick to watch all the shit people do when they’re locked in a house together. All the fights, the crying, the drama. It should feel wrong to be sitting in the comfort of your own home watching this all go down. It’s like watching a lab rat run through a maze over and over again just to get the cheese at the very end.
By month 5 something felt different. There were only 2 left in the house. Every time someone had left, a producer never showed up. The person would have to find their own way home. But no one thought much of it. They figured it was part of the game.
At the end of month 6, there was one person standing. They were ecstatic. But the producer never came, once again. This was strange, because it was the end of the game and there was no one there to take them away and give them their million dollar cheque. They left the house and saw no one around. It was eerily quiet. Almost unsettling. They ran over to the garage and found a film van. No one was in it, but the keys were still there. After searching the grounds for anyone to help them and failing to find someone, the winner hopped in the van and took off. Their plan was to drive to the television station and demand answers. They went through hell to win this game, and they were going to get their prize.
The drive over there was bizarre. There was no one around. Garbage was everywhere. The city looked like a complete disaster. There weren’t even other cars on the road. The winner pulled the van over when they saw some flyers on store fronts. The flyers said something about an airborne virus. People got sick. People died. Is that what happened? Am I the only one left? Thousands of thoughts rushed through their mind. They didn’t know what to think or how to react, or where to go. Panic set in fast. Shit. 6 months ago the city was exploding with people.
6 months ago everything was fine.
6 months ago everyone was alive.

The Invisible Man (2020) Review
*SPOILER FREE*
Tumblr media
The Invisible Man is a movie monster that most people should know about by now. The mere mention of the name and you’ve put an image in someone’s head of what they understand The Invisible Man to be. There have been plenty of adaptations of this story with the novella originally being published in 1897. This particular one is getting a lot of attention, as it should.
Elisabeth Moss and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in the most recent adaptation of The Invisible Man, directed by Leigh Whannell. I want to start off by saying that the performance Moss gave was incredible. She delivered in every single scene; she didn’t miss a beat. Watching her character progression bloom on screen was worth the watch on its own. As for Cohen, he played an excellent villain. I wouldn’t have pegged him as someone who could play the hell out of a villainous role — especially after his part in The Haunting of Hill House — yet, he really did it. Now, you don’t get to see him that often throughout the film, for obvious reasons, but his voice, and the times you do get to see his expressions, are totally unsettling. I honestly can’t shake some of the expressions. Same goes for Moss, I’m still thinking about her emotionally charged scenes and the distant looks she gives when she feels defeated. The two of them really played off each other.
In a movie like this, you really need to find out how to scare the audience in a non-traditional way. And that’s exactly what they did here, with cinematography and sound design. The cinematography was disquieting. It’s interesting how they managed to incite fear just by showing you a completely empty room. You know in the back of your mind that nothing is there, but you wonder if that’s really true, and you start searching the scene for any hints of a presence. Those lingering scenes gives you a sense of panic. Your need to know what’s going on makes things a little more intense and exciting. Overall, the use of negative space and camera panning was fantastic. The sound design was also a big factor in the film. The score is done by none other than Benjamin Wallfisch, and his work sure does shine in this one. There are plenty of scenes when there is complete silence, or close to it. But when the things start to heat up, the sound explodes, in only the best ways. I truly appreciated the sound in this one, and all the other ways the filmmakers kept putting the audience on edge.
Speaking of fear, one thing I noticed was the lack of jumpscares. I really did expect there to be a lot more with a movie called The Invisible Man. They honestly could have gone overboard with it, but I’m completely happy with their decision to pull back and focus on the creepier side of things. There was also a surprising amount of action, and those scenes didn’t seem to take anything away from the actual story. They kept you right where you needed to be. And there were no predictable moments; there were actually a handful of scenes that were a little shocking.
To wrap things up, I do want to talk about the story a bit. As most people probably know, this movie is about an abusive relationship that escalates to a horrific point. Of course it’s not entirely realistic, but there are huge moments that can properly represent what it’s like to deal with such a traumatic experience. I think it especially focuses on what it feels like to be alone and not have anyone believe what you’re going through. The point being, you should believe people who have had to deal with abuse, and have PTSD as a result. What makes the story haunting is the fact that the message is so real. And I think they handled it really well.
The Invisible Man is a fun and modern take on the classic story by H.G Wells. It’s relentlessly eerie, and throws handfuls of emotions at you throughout the film. There were also some little easter eggs that fans will appreciate. I honestly wanted to watch it again almost as soon as I left the building. I’m extremely happy with how it turned out.
Go see this movie. If you have the chance to see it in theatre, it’s worth it. It’ll stick with you for a while. And hopefully pleasantly surprise you.

Video
I can’t believe this is really happening. I’ve been hiding in my apartment since taking this video, and the sirens haven’t stopped; I don’t think they will anytime soon. Every so often I’ll see another flash of light. I’ve never seen the sky this colour before. It just keeps getting stranger, too. I don’t know what it means exactly, I just know that they’ve arrived. Through the siren I can hear screaming and crying coming from the streets. What are they doing here? What do they want with us? I’m really scared. Every minute that goes by I get more and more anxious. This can’t be real, right? I don’t know… I don’t know anymore. I just want the sirens to stop. I can’t stand to hear the cries of women and children any longer. Am I safe here? Is this the end? Please God, don’t let this be the end. Please.

Hey all. My partner and I are currently in the process of creating some zines! This short story will be used in one of them. There will be three total. They’ll each include a short horror story based on some spooky Toronto lore, along with some drawings to help visualize the stories.
I’ll make an official post about this once we have more progress on the whole thing. Then you’ll get the chance to let me know if you’d like to purchase one, or all three of them.
I’m very excited for this! Thanks everyone.
Bay Station
The new subway station had been running for about five years after the original one was abandoned in 1966. And it was built right on top of it. Most of the locals don’t even know why it closed down, and they don’t seem to care either way. All anyone cares about is getting to where they want to be. Although, not long after the station was closed off, rumours began to spread. Children would tell stories to their friends at sleepovers; adults would have hushed conversations over drinks.
On a humid summer evening, a twelve-year-old boy named Billy Sage, and his small group of friends, planned on investigating the rumours they’d heard. But they didn’t want to go into the station themselves. Rather, they convinced a scrawny kid they knew from school to do it for them. Austin was the sort of kid other kids picked on even though they didn’t really have a reason to — they just did it because he was an easy target. Billy told him that if he didn’t do this he would tell the whole school about the time Austin peed his pants in third grade. He complied reluctantly. Austin already got enough prodding and beatings in school, he didn’t want more.
The five of them biked down to Bay station. It was just after six o’clock. Most people who took the subway would be home already. They had families to get to and dinners to eat. When the kids arrived, they parked their bikes by the side of the building.
Billy led his friends, and Austin, to a door he had discovered a few days earlier. As they were all walking over, he explained that he saw a bunch of workers going in and out of the station using this door. While he was watching these men, he got the idea to jam something in the door frame so that it wouldn’t lock.
“When the door was propped open, I ran over and stuck a rock in the hole where the bolt thingy is supposed to go into when it closes,” Billy explained.
“Cool!” The twins, Frankie and Freddie, said in unison.
When they got to the mysterious door Billy had told them about, they all stood silently for a moment, just staring at it. There was something eerie about that door; something otherworldly. It was like a passage to a different dimension. Each boy fantasized about what might be behind it. Billy pictured a room full of ghosts; Frankie thought about a ten foot monster while Freddie cringed over the possibility of a giant poisonous spider; Sam, the quiet one, imagined a room full of twisting and knotted snakes. Austin was the only one who didn’t wonder what was behind that door. All he thought about was being at home and watching Underdog reruns with his cat Felix.
“Let’s get this thing open!” Billy said, breaking the momentary silence.
They all looked at each other with the same expression of doubt.
“What? You babies wanna chicken-out?” Billy scoffed.
“Nope, not me,” said Frankie.
“Me neither!” said Freddie.
Sam shrugged and shook his head.
Austin didn’t say anything.
That feeling of doubt and fear silently lingered among them.
Billy rolled his eyes and grabbed the handle of the metal door. It was heavier than he thought. He heaved the door open, revealing a long, dark hallway with a set of stairs at the end, leading downward.
“You’re up, kid,” Billy said to Austin.

We were house hunting today for something that might need a little love.
I came across this strange drawing on a wall in one of the houses.
Tumblr media
After taking the photo I was overcome with vertigo.
We left the house soon after.
On the way home I started feeling severely ill.
I fell asleep as soon as we got home, and my dreams were horrific. I saw that house and what it used to be — what happened there. I tried so hard to wake up but I just couldn’t. There was so much pain... so much blood.
I eventually woke up screaming.
Sometimes I still think about that house. Sometimes it still haunts my dreams.

The Guest
There’s something living in my home. I’ve seen it. Everyone I tell thinks I’m crazy, but I know what I’ve seen, and what I’ve heard. It’s not human. I thought it was a ghost at first, but now I think it’s out to get me. Could it be a demon? I don’t know. I just know that it’s tall and dark, and it lurks in the shadows late at night when I’m in my bed. My body becomes paralyzed when I see it. Sometimes it stands in my bedroom doorway and watches me all night long. Those nights I don’t sleep. I’m too afraid to. When the sun starts to fill the room, it walks away. These days I’m always exhausted. Sometimes I even see it in the daylight. It’s quiet and subtle. It stands at the end of hallways and on the outside of the windows. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve tried the church and they turned me away. They said it was too evil — too powerful —  for them to even try. I’m stuck here, all by myself. I can’t leave because I don’t have the money to. All my friends live in different cities. My family doesn’t believe me, and they’re too busy to help. I just want my life back. I don’t want to keep living in fear. I need a way out. I need to get rid of this thing; this entity. I feel trapped in my own home.
I’ve found a psychic. I’ve seen them help on those ghost hunter TV shows. Though, I never really believed in the supernatural, until this started happening to me. Why is it here? What did I do to deserve this torture? I’m calling them today. I can’t take this any longer.
“I’ll be right over, Miss Franklin.” The medium hung up before I could say goodbye. She said whatever was inhabiting my home had to be removed immediately. I hope she can do it. She’s my last hope. Even as I got off the phone, I saw it standing in the other room. Its sunken eyes and sharp, elastic smile are burned into my mind. Even when it’s not around, it’s still here; it’s still infecting my thoughts. But I’m so used to seeing it that I’m almost numb to it.
All of this started after my boyfriend passed away. After that, I decided I needed a fresh start, so I packed up and moved. Everything was stressful, and I was so lonely. I remember being afraid to be alone, and I was so angry too. I was angry at my family, my friends, and my boyfriend for leaving me the way that he did. But I don’t want to get into that. There was just so much negativity in my life. I wasn’t happy anymore. I didn’t even want to be alive anymore. I was a completely different person than I used to be.
Then, one night I woke up in terror. The thing that haunts me was standing over my bed. I screamed and frantically reached for the bedside light, but it had already disappeared by the time I turned it on. Ever since that first night I’ve been living in a nightmare.
Tracy, the medium, arrived two hours after I got off the phone with her. She got to my place faster than I thought she would. As soon as she stepped into my home, her entire demeanour changed. Her facial expression, her body, even the way she was breathing. I wasn’t surprised. We both knew that there was evil in our presence. She explained to me that all of the negative energy accumulated from my loss, and the emotions that came with it, had conjured up a very dangerous entity.
After going through the house, Tracy put her hand on my shoulder and said, “Oh sweetheart, I’m so sorry. I’m going to help you, okay? We’re going to get your life back.” I felt relief. For the first time in so long, I actually felt like things would be alright. I had hope.
Tracy spent a lot of time setting up for whatever she was planning on doing. She didn’t tell me exactly what was going on. I was nervous, anxious, and tired. I felt the demon lingering around me. My body was shivering and I felt sick. I think Tracy knew that. She could see that I was uncomfortable. She told me it was time to get started.
She sat in a chair surrounded by candles, while I was sitting across from her on my couch. She told me earlier that I didn’t need to participate, she could do what needed to be done without my help. And she wanted me to be safe. She started speaking in a foreign language, first in a whisper, and then she got louder and more aggressive. My chest started to hurt, so severely that I thought I was having a heart attack. Tracy didn’t stop. She didn’t even see how much pain I was in because her eyes were closed. I knew the creature was in the room with us. I could see it. It was standing directly behind Tracy. I tried to say something, but the words weren’t coming out. It was so tall that it was towering over her. Even with no eyes, I knew it was staring at me. The candles had gone out, and everything was dark. I couldn’t see a thing. The pain in my chest had stopped, and I could finally breathe again. But, where did it go?
I managed to cough out some words, “Tracy? What’s happening?”
She didn’t answer. I was so afraid — more afraid than I could bear.
For only a minute, the room was silent. The only thing I could hear was my heartbeat. That is until I started hearing something else.
It was low and quiet, but I knew what it was because I had heard it before. It was growling, so much that it sounded like a dog was in the room. I wanted to get off the couch but my body was frozen.
“Tracy…?”
Demonic laughter echoed in my head, and I instantly shut my eyes.
“Tracy isn’t here anymore…”
I shuddered, hesitantly opened my eyes, and the first thing I saw was that familiar, evil smile, directly in front of my face. My heart sank.
“It’s just you and me.”
