Happy Birthday Jimmy Page! : Jimmy Page April 4, 1986 at the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, NJ. 12 minute guitar solo of “White Summer” / “Black Mountain Side” / “Midnight Moonlight” playing with his post Led Zeppelin band, "The Firm." : There was a day when it was forbidden to bring cameras into concert venues. Smart phones, digital cameras did not exist. As a long time Jimmy Page fan, when I had an opportunity to see Jimmy live (again), I tossed caution to the wind and hid a very basic Minolta 35mm camera into a sweatshirt that was then tucked into my small backpack. I had 24 shots available on a roll of Kodak Ektachrome ASA 1600 35mm slide film. I don't recall the lens, but it was a cheap setup, shot on film I knew would be grainy in a very dark, shaky environment. I wasn't able to setup the camera anywhere other than on my lap, cradled into and somewhat stabilized by the sweatshirt. I guessed at all the setting, tried to focus on the stage without getting caught before the concert began. : I had a bulb cable release stuck into the side of my chair, the camera never left it's hiding spot in the sweatshirt. So, at key point throughout the concert, I'd try to be as still as possible and then nudge the bulb hoping I captured the moment. A few came through with mood, lots of grain and blur, but I felt they were representative of the experience... and kinda' cool, but then left them. Several slides survived until a couple of decades later I was able to salvage them with a Nikon Super CoolScan 9000 ED film scanner. : Now on tour with their follow up album, “Mean Business,” Jimmy and the band or even tighter but still need time for some memorable jams and a very long show peppered with bits of Zeppelin material and more jams! The guitar solos were unlike anything I'd ever seen (and I have seen many shows) extraordinary playing. This shot was a slow, intricate moody mix of crazy string bending. When the house lights went up, concert over, everyone was buzzing with the show we had just witnessed, an iconic guitarist captivating 20,000 people with his six stringed virtuosity! Thank you Jimmy! To recognize the anniversary of Woodstock 94, which took place August 12 - 14 and the original Woodstock which took place August 15 - 18, I thought I’d post the CD cover I did for a compilation recording of the alternate Woodstock 94 show that was held at the original Bethel site, not the huge Pepsi sponsored Woodstock 94 debacle. While this recording saw very limited success with a small release, it did include some notable artists with the headliner being Richie Havens. A very small production company was set up by musician Ken Lauber under his own label, Byrdcliff Records. As I had done work for Ken before, including the logo for his record label and website, he approached me for CD artwork. A shot taken a number of years back in Dobbs Ferry, NY . This shot was a good learning experience, know your shutter speed! Of a dozen photos, only this was salvageable as the rest were overexposed and very blurry. Shot with strobes, I was easily slow by at least 2 stops yet somehow this image, kinda', survived. Oh what could have been! -sigh- Well, the lesson has stayed with me. This was a done at a Joe McNally workshop in 2010. If ever you have an opportunity to attend one, do it! A portrait shoot with Marie and her favorite, floppy beach hat. Shooting continues to be sporadic as my studio is in transition (that means packed up and in boxes), While meaning to shoot outside, now with summer (hot) weather here, it just hasn't happened yet. So, another fun, improvised shoot in my little study area. This shot is a much wider shot, but constrained to IG proportions, I had to crop on the left and a bunch on the right. So, some visual impact and negative space is lost. I hope the cropped photo still carries visual interest. A series of clicks just playing around as we went through several ideas, with the always spirited Marie, ever so patient, yet continually, um, I'll say challenging me to capture a candid moment. Just missed one such moment, this time, but caught this interesting look just moments later. A short shoot, but always fun. Many bad shots, goofs and screw-ups, but the process is always fun and maybe, just maybe have some ideas for next time. That'd be a nice change instead of always starting without a clue. Tara is a triple threat, Attorney, Model and Athlete! This shot was originally just an outtake, not quite good enough for prime-time. But as I found it last night languishing on a hard drive as I was sorting images and backing up, I gave it another look. Then as it turns out, today is Tara's birthday. So I decided to post. This was shot in an awesome location in Dobbs Ferry NY. A large building full of unique spaces, big windows,,large rooms and long hallways. A falling apart warehouse full of character and just a bit of decay. More work shooting with Marie as she lent a hand so I could practice with buttons, dials and light. Shooting is still sporadic, but with warmer weather near and access to larger (safer) outdoor sets and bigger spaces, getting creative and back in the swing of all aspects of creativity should, I hope, improve and speed up. This shot was from a series of very similar head shots this day. Little changed on my end, Marie was the driving force in the variety of looks we got. Another shot from the fair grounds in Great Barrington, MA with Carolan where we wandered (with permission). Having found a few incomplete images, it was time to edit. The day was very hot making for some very casual, slow and unhurried shoots... Laid back, too hot for anything else. In between ducking to shade or cooler locations, some areas made for interesting possibilities, despite being in a hot, steamy field. This shot was deep into the fairground near a smaller grandstand, half falling down. A shot from a couple of summers back before we ever heard of covid-19. This was up in Great Barrington, MA where we wandered (with permission) the old fairgrounds in Barrington, which is where this image was taken right behind the old wooden bleachers overlooking an overgrown, grassy field where a horse track once was. Finally making time (ok, had plenty of lockdown time) to edit images from that day. Very hot and we were feeling it, but such a great location, we had to make the most of it. After not having posted throughout most of 2020, I felt it time to try to brush off the dust of stagnation while prying my eyes away from the insane news cycle that feels it's at maximum crescendo. Exploring some murky moods and tones here with my friend "model" for the day. Here I put M in front of a softbox, blocked out a window and hung an old drape on the wall. Some quick goofing around in post and I had what I thought was a kinda' cool, eerie image. A warm, humid day contributed to the steamy feel of a short portrait session. As most, this was not planned but simply evolved from one frame to the next. My friend, M, here could easily have been an actress as she is able to change from clowning around to going full on sexy in just a few clicks. We had some music playing in the background, but that was obscured by the sounds of the fans blowing. That murmur, warm moving air and overall mugginess contributed to the mood. We both felt a bit melancholy but those often turn into some interesting frames. Here are 3 images that best capture the feel of the day, as interpreted through M and her expression. Details for this shot. Hm? I'm not sure that I'm able to properly explain this slightly off day. Planned shoot? Yes All my requisite shooting criteria had been met. Music? Yup. What was playing? I haven't a clue, but the station was a classic rock format. Was it hot? Yup. Been a very warm, but nice summer. It was a Friday and everyone was feeling a bit, oh, "punchy." Fans blowing, doors open... Bees flying around inside, you know, a typical set. Then; I was put on an unexpected time restraint, which M seem to take a sadistic pleasure in shouting out whenever I was fumbling or unsure of settings. If I took a moment to ponder, I'd hear a loud, stern "Time Restraint!!!" and I'd look to see her smirking at me with a twinkle in her eye. My shots just weren't happening, so as I was trying light and camera settings, I would be taunted with poses designed to mock & dare me. However, as M is not being familiar with gear at all didn't realize just because I did not have me eye in the viewfinder and was mumbling that I had the wrong setting for ...whatever, does not, necessarily, mean I did not capture the shot when pushing the shutter button! :-) I may have some ok shots from the day, but this is retribution, a BTS of working with M and my favorite shot of the day!
